-CHRIS
-Chris, the 2nd Tenor and Baritone Singer/Songwriter/Actor from Brooklyn, NY has been on the scene since the 90’s, but the crowd stood up and took notice in 2003 when he was called onto the Madison Square Garden stage by the legendary Chaka Khan and he masterfully performed an impromptu yet emotional acapella piece. His smooth tone and enticing style left the audience simply wanting more. Since that time, E-Chris has been featured on 107.5 WBLS’ Shadow Night Club, as well as various showcases throughout Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan where admirers donned him “The R&B Hustler”. It was his soulful cover of an R&B classic that has won him 1st place on Amateur Night At The Apollo, but it was a performance of his own club banger “Step Your Game Up” and the sexy “Me And You” that had set fire to the BB King Blues Club in 2017 when he opened up for R&B group (Force MD's). Which also put him in the bless position in 2018 to open up for R&B artists for different performances. (Carl Thomas), (Hi-Five), (Case) and (Christopher Williams). In 2019 E-Chris “The R&B Hustler “ is still showing how musically inclined he is by continuing to capture the attention of different radio station that play his songs and, gaining more love and support from the public audience while on stage performing. E-Chris is educated in the Music Industry laws and has made film appearances with Spike Lee films (Girl 6), (Bamboozoo) and film producer Gina Princeby The Wood HBO special (Dissapearing Acts) In which EChris doubled for actor (Wesley Snipes). E-Chris “The R&B Hustler’s" goal is to nurture a new generation of R&B lovers through his sensuous brand of writing and performing. E-Chris is a captivating artist who is to be reckoned with.

Red Ink Magazine had the honor of interviewing E-Chris. Red Ink: Are you currently working on any new single or album? E-C: Yes most definitely. I just finished recording my new R&B Club Banger titled (LET ME SHOW YA) and its been getting great reviews along with positive reactions from from the listeners when they tune into the radio stations that have been playing my new single and showing love and support. Red Ink: Do you write your own music? E-C: Yes, I've been blessed to be able to write my own songs and it feels so good. I've been writing songs for a very long time and thanks to our HEAVENLY FATHER, my writing skills have excelled to a higher level throughout the years. And I've learned how to express myself lyrically in a musically inclined way. Contd...page 26

GENERAL DEGREE
S
quashed between an ample haggler and a crocus bag of tings, on a Kingston bound ‘country-bus’ before the morning sun had blessed the chilly parish of Manchester, the young Cardiff Butt aka- General Degree, would practice his rhyming skills. Money saved from his tailoring job tucked into his billfold, the destination was the network of recording studios in Jamaica’s capital city and the chance to prove those skills to a record producer. “You know that the city is where everything is happening in terms of the music,” reminisces Degree.” “It’s harder for the country artistes... if a young artiste doesn’t have a vehicle, him haffi tek bus. And you have a certain time when you haffi ketch the town bus back to country in the night too. “Dem ting deh mi guh through and it was hard. It’s much harder for those who live in the country more than the city.” Born in Manchester on April 28, Degree often had to hide as a child from his strict Christian Parents in order to get a taste of what was happening on the airwaves, It was only a few years later In his early 20’s, that Degree was hitting those same airwaves with his brilliant imitation of a grandmother in his first number one hit ‘Granny’- his first recording for Main Street producer Danny Browne. ‘Granny’ reigned in the dances and charts for one year straight, and that humorous vine has thrived throughout Degree’s career and is a component he naturally possesses. Degree’s impressive parade of number one hits continued both at home and abroad, and lends great credence to the fact that he certainly does know what he’s talking about. Tunes such as ‘Granny’ Brinks, Mr do it nice, Bodyguard, Pianist, Papa Lover, When I Hold You Tonight, and countless others have had fans skanking. General Degree is also renowned for his provocative lyrics that always leave just enough up to the imagination. The little they do leave, is also plenty for them not to be certified XXX-rated. Girls crying for his ‘Pianist’ is the perfect example of a Degree double-entendre, that gets his earthy message across whilst leaving censors with nothing to do. The reason why Degree’s suggestiveness works so well is because of the pure invention of his work. It’s a trademark that ensures no two Degree tunes sound similar, even if the subject matter might be. Always vocally ambidextrous on a rhythm, his spoken voice lingers at double bass. Reflecting this, the 1998 smash “Bag A Tings” has become the blueprint for an almost monotone flow that has been utilized by many deejays since.‘Cartoon Character’, ’Traffic Blocking’, ‘Boom Boom’, among others, kept the artiste on the charts and satisfied his fans appetite for more of the ‘Bush Baby’ which happened to be the title track of the album for which he copped a Reggae Soca Award for best dancehall album. Being often described as a “consistent” DJ, Degree has entered this year 2019 with a new EP titled "BODY WORK" with tracks like 'BODY WORK”, “MISS GOOD GIRL” & WAGANIS', other new tracks such as “BLANK” and “READY NOW”, have proven his consistency. So once again the wheels are turning for yet another lyrically creative production from Degree and will be an addition to his growing catalogue. Not to be outdone by the young bloods in the business, Degree has and will continue to rank among the best, and has pledged to maintain and continue contributing to the development and success of dancehall music. Red Ink Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing General Degree at the 13th Annual Music Fest 2019 in Miami. Red Ink: You have been in this business for a long time, and so many newer artists say that people like you ‘General Degree’, and Buju, and Shabba are their inspiration, Going back who was your inspiration? GD: “One artist who was my biggest inspiration was Super Cat and he is here with us tonight. But it was Super Cat, Lieutenant Stichie, Papa San were the ones, definitely.” Red Ink: If you had your choice one artist of any genre, it doesn’t have to be a Caribbean Artist, to do a collaboration or performance with; who would it be? GD: “Rihanna, yeah Rihanna, I like her a lot.” Red Ink: Now how about within the Caribbean community? GD: “There are so many, Super Cat, I would love to do something with one of my idol Super Cat.” “Current artists, there are a couple of them, current artists that I hear and their real good, like Popcaan and some other artists that I like.. like Jahmiel one of my favorite songs is his and goes something like ‘Time, time, time, time’ (General Degree started singing chorus to Things Take Time) These are all artists that I would work with.” Red Ink: Do you have any new singles or albums that are coming out soon? GD: “Definitely, I have a new song since two months ago called ‘Blank’. Red Ink: Anything new and upcoming that other people might not know about? GD:“Yeah definitely, a song called ‘Our Place’ produced by Wallas and Bashment Music, that’s the newest thing, it’s not out yet, it is going to be out in June.” “Follow @generaldegree1 on Instagram for all updates” Red Ink: Where is your favorite venue to perform? C H R O N I X X R ET U R N S WITH NEW MUSIC & C E L E B R AT E S 5 - Y E A R A N N I V E R S A R Y OF DREAD & TERRIBLE PROJECT Jamaica's Revered Musician Drops Deluxe Edtion of his 2014 Landmark Release with New Track "Jah Is There" & Ed Sheeran Unleashes Chronixx & Koffee Remix For "I Don't Care" ft. Justin Bieber Ahead of Headlining Concerts in Uganda (Pulse Jam Fest) and Jamaica (Reggae Sumfest). Friday (June 28), Jamaican reggae star Chronixx re-issues the deluxe edition of his seminal project, Dread & Terrible (via Soul Circle/Seed Distribution) on its five-year anniversary. This re-release contains 11 tracks such as his now-certified classics "Here Comes Trouble," "Capture Land," and "Spirulina." Another standout is the previously unreleased "Jah Is There," produced by Chronixx. The song was intended for Dread & Terrible, but did not make it in time for production. The introspective track is accompanied by an animated lyric video by artist Tom Kariv. Since Dread & Terrible broke into the Billboard Top 200 (#179) in August 2014 and topped the Reggae chart, Chronixx has become one of the most critically-acclaimed artists of the past five years while setting the tone for today's generation of conscious reggae artists. Chronixx, born Jamar McNaughton, made his breakthrough television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in the summer of 2014. It was a pivotal moment that introduced American audiences to his wise lyrical stylings, and unprecedented both for reggae and the unsigned 22-year-old (at the time). DTP reminds him of a simpler time when he was starting his journey. The pinnacle release was a prelude to his GRAMMY-nominated album Chronology (2017). "[Musically] I was at a crossroads where I could’ve said ‘I want to be this artist or that type of artist.' I think choosing to go this path and represent something that could benefit a lot of people positively was the main experience I [had]," says Chronixx. The spotlight is back on Chronixx this week anchoring the remix to Ed Sheeran's "I Don't Care" featuring Justin Bieber and Koffee. Together Chronixx and Koffee, the buzzing newcomer he has taken under his wing, put their Jamaican birthplace of Spanish Town on the world's radar on Ed Sheeran's new summer anthem. Through the celebration of this five year anniversary of Dread & Terrible Project, Chronixx will be headlining 12
both Uganda's Pulse Jam Fest on June 29th, and the annual Reggae Sumfest concert in Montego Bay, Jamaica on July 19th. More announcements to follow in the coming weeks.

VP RECORDS CELEBRATES A 40TH ANNIVERSARY IN NEW YORK AS WE REMEMBER A 60 YEAR LEGACY THAT STARTED IN JAMAICA.
ongratulations on 40 years of being both a pioneer and visionary in the Reggae and Caribbean music industry. This a major milestone that deserves a retrospective look at how it all began, so that fans and artists alike can truly appreciate how important VP Records has been to this community. All lovers of Caribbean music know the name VP records and love the sounds that have been produced and released from them. VP was the largest Reggae Record company in the world, and after the acquisition of Greensleeves Record company in 2008 VP became the largest Independent Label and Distributor of all Caribbean Music in the world. The expansion opened the gates for Ska, Reggae, Soca, Calypso, Dancehall and all of the styles and unique sounds from the Caribbean to be distributed from one major player. With some of the biggest names in the industry to pass through the doors and turntables of VP records; Sean Paul, Shabba Ranks, Super Cat, Tanya Stephens, Elephant Man, Beres Hammond, I-Wayne, Morgan Heritage, Jah 9 and Queen Ifrica to name just a few; it is no surprise that VP records is the name the industry thinks of when it comes to Reggae. But the legacy and roots reach back even further, 20 years further back to when the V and P of VP records started a record shop in Kingston, Jamaica. The year was 1958 and Vincent Chin (the V) and Patricia Chin (the P) opened up Randy’s Records. The record shop was actually named after Vincent heard a catchy name on the radio, an American record shop based in Tennessee had sponsored an R+B radio show that was able to be heard on the islands. Vincent “Randy” Chin later inherited the name himself. Randy had worked prior for a Syrian-Jamaican businessman, Issac Issa, who owned the largest jukebox business on the island. Randy oversaw the restocking and replacing of records in the jukebox’s in all of the bars around Jamaica. One of the perks was that Mr. Issa let Randy keep all of the records being replaced that were simply

VINCENT & PATRICIA CHIN going to be discarded anyway, and this stockpile became the foundation of stock for the record store, which would ultimately become the foundation of a music empire. After a few years of great success distributing records Randy also started to record and then sell vinyl for local artists. He became one of the first people to issue records of locally recorded music on the island. One of the earliest success as a local producer was a Ska single, Independent Jamaica, by calypso singer Lord Creator. Soon after this Vincent and Patricia relocated the record store to a larger location, an old ice cream parlour, at the address of 17 North Parade. This address became famous, and still is to this day, because upstairs from the records shop is where the true birth of VP records began, with the creation of Studio 17.
RED INK MAGAZINE
Studio 17 was a recording studio, production, engineering and sound board operation that due to its success also became one of the earliest networking sites of the Reggae music community. Bob Marley and Wailers recorded at Studio 17 as did Augustus Pablo with “Java Java.” This became the instrumental tune of the year in 1972 and made the studio increasingly popular. Not soon after this, Jack Ruby produced Burning Spears most famous works right there above Randy’s Record shop, inside the sound booth at Studio 17. With word of the success spreading, Randy’s Records became the networking site where artists, musicians and producers could gather together and on any given day find people to collaborate with. The corner in front of the shop became known as “Idlers Rest” and was the primary industry hangout for the next decade. Names like Bob Marley, Big Youth, Dillenger, and Leroy Smart could be seen there on a regular basis. But alas, the dangerous political situation in Jamaica at that time forced to the Chin’s to make a hard decision for their family. They decided to relocate to America and ironically settled in Jamaica once again, this time in Jamaica Queens, in New York City. In 1979, the V and P formally opened up VP records and carried with them the 20 year Legacy from their time in Jamaica of being a family that was undeniably one of the most influential groups of people to the Reggae community. They were at the recording, production, engineering and distribution levels of some of the most important music ever to leave the Island of Jamaica and will forever be a part of that history. Now that VP Records is in its 40th Year of business in NY and is one of the most recognizable names in the Caribbean
Music industry, it is clear that the 60 years of legacy will continue with God’s will for 60 more. VP has been and still is the epitome of a family business. Vincent may have passed in 2003, but his name and legacy live on through his wife and children. Patricia and her sons Randy and Chris still actively run VP records and the family name will always be a part of the Label. VP Records has had too much success to list over the last 40 years, but some worthy mentions include Sean Paul’s “Gimme the Light,” Beenie Man’s “Who am I,” Tanto Metro and Devonte’s “Give it to Her,” Gyptian’s “Hold You,” Elephant Man’s “Let’s Get Physical,” Shaggy’s “Intoxication.” And the Riddim Driven and Reggae Gold Series album compilations have been fan favorite and award winning for the last two decades. Staying true to the pioneering roots that started at Randy’s Record Shop and Studio 17, VP records has expanded its line of labels to include venues for new artists to debut singles, and a special label, for non-traditional reggae music that has influences from the rock community, called Dub Rockers. VP has even gone deeper back to its roots with a special label called 17 North Parade, that is dedicated to releasing old school albums and singles from artists of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, some that have never been heard by world audiences. VP records has run the gambit of being a pioneer and a visionary in the industry. All lovers of Caribbean music and culture owe the Chin family a great deal of gratitude and respect. We at Red Ink Magazine, wish nothing but success for the future and hope to be here to report on the 80th Anniversary of this incredible label that has the strongest of roots. By Michael Devine u

Swing into summer AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar
t’s officially summer and while the temperatures are rising the last thing that seems to make sense is to turn on the stove or oven. However, why not head out to the grill with a cool drink in hand? Grilling can be a quick and tasty way to get dinner on the table on a hot summer’s night. However, when you think about the many BBQs of summer, it often consists of various salads laden with mayonnaise and starch. To get away from the calories but keep the flavor , try incorporating fresh ingredients that are in season. Last month did you try out the summer salad recipe? Don’t forget that these recipes can be prepared as a side dish, appetizer, or main dish by adjusting the portion size. This month we will make lettuce wraps inspired by Korean cuisine. While it is not a traditional preparation, adding a little brown rice or quinoa as a starch to the lettuce wraps can transform the recipe into satisfying main dish. However, the starch can definitely be omitted for an equally as satisfying dish. You can simply add some more of your favorite veggies. While enjoying your creations from the grill do not forget to keep yourself hydrated. Keep an eye on the calories and specifically the sugar content of those cool drinks. There is nothing wrong with being frugal and savor the cool, crisp refreshment of free tap water! Next month we will focus on some more refreshing and healthy drink options. Stay tuned to Red Ink Magazine! u

Fire up the grill and grill the steak to your favorite doneness. Toss the Portobello caps with some olive oil salt and pepper and grill as well. While the grill is doing its thing set up an assembly line with the other ingredients: Lettuce, carrots, radish, and sesame seeds. Now that I've introduced my self to you, let's get back to the reason why, I died on the inside. My angel, my heart, my mother was called home. The tears filled my eyes, I couldn’t let the pain out. It was built up inside of me, like a pressure cooker. One night while, I was jamming to some good music with my family members. I heard this instrumental beat and i was thinking of my queen , my mother Sister Lizzie Mae . Thats when this Hook to my song came to me. I could feel every word. Right then, my current single was born. I named it ( A LETTER to MOMMA). By MURDOCK
