ST 2019 Greatest Reggae Festival in Miami

13th Annual Best Of the Best was nothing short of epic ness. With a prompt start at 4:30 pm the artists would entertain from start to finish. BayFront Park, which comes alive every Memorial Day Sunday, was filled with patrons enjoying the Caribbean food, various vendors and most of all the music. At 6:15 pm St Vinncent and the Grenadines star Skinny Fabulous hit that stage and he ignited the stage and got the 1000s in the park jumping and waving their flags. Marzville who performed earlier also gave a stellar performance as he wheeled of his hits “Give it to Ya”, “Bang Bim” and “Wuk”. As the show went on there was a seamless transition of artists as the show changed gear and approached the 90s dancehall artists. General B and Round Head, General Degree and Frisco Kid all brought back a nostalgia as to why many still say 90s era is the best. With songs like “Traffic Blocking”, “When I hold you tonight”, “Bad Inna New Clothes”, Repeat & Report, “Weed is Life”, “Little and Cute”, “Gal Pon De side”, or “Rubbers” it was as if you were in a 99s Dancehall party. “I haven’t dance like this at a park show is so many years. I

enjoyed every minute of the show, the artists , the song, they all brought back so much memory” says Daisy Whitaker of Tampa Florida. During the show, Best of the Best was honored with a proclamation from Miami-Dade County. “It is a celebration of Caribbean heritage. It has been kind of downplayed because it has been doing well for so long,” said Retha Boone-Fye, program officer and director of the county’s Black Affairs Advisory Board. “Best of the Best has earned its reputation based on the fact it’s in its 13th year. This particular festival also hasn't had any negative incidents and we are very proud of that.”. Vanessa Bling, only females billed for the show came out to an resounding roar as her fans seemed to have been anticipating her performance. She made sure to give her fans a performance to remember. Also gracing the stage was new sensations Noah Powa along with ZJ Liquid who gave a us their hit “Dem Nuh Like We”, Noah who also received great crowd response for his single “Keep the Same Energy” definitely showed that he is here to stay. As the night went out Bushman came on stage and the music fest shif into an entire new gear. As he began performing his hits like “Fire Bun a Weak Heart”, “Call the Hearse”, “Downtown”, “Worries and Problem” the crowd could not stop singing and requesting more. It was now time for the Emperor Shabba Ranks And Super Cat, who both performed their separate segment of the show but had every phone light on and patrons singing and screaming for more. “I’ve always wanted to see Shabba Ranks perform, one of my favorite artist and I thank my husband for making this dream come through. His performance was everything, I can believe after so many years he still have it. says Marcia Thomas from Rochester New York. As the night drew near to an end there was only two artists remaining, Jahmiel and Alkaline. Jahmiel entered the stage and there was just so much energy, an electrifying performance for someone only four years on the international scene. He would go on to perform hits like “True Colours” “Live Without Limit”, “Strongest Soldier” “Gain the World” just to name a few. Each one resonating with the masses. The show concluded with a performance from Alkaline. He performed his hits “Afterall” and “Juggernaut.” The biggest surprise in his set was an appearance from Mavado. Together they performed “Farewell” and the crowd went wild. Best of the Best brought another evening of great Caribbean music that left many tourists and locals satisfied. “Hardwork is the key to success. When we say Best of the Best, we mean the artists are going to put on the best performance to make our patrons happy to be there,” said Jabba, radio personality of Hot 97 and co-founder of Best of the Best. u By Ronnie Tomlinson - Destine MediaPR 11

BARBIE CA$$H by Michael Devine

astassia Davy who is known to the public as “Barbie Cassh” was born in Kingston Jamaica. She’s always had an entertainment background, at the tender age of 15 she was a fashion model and the age of 18 she worked as an “entertainment coordinator” where she did the performing arts such as dancing, singing and acting at Sandals Resort. With her hustling mentality, Barbie Cassh is a true entrepreneur, she created a brand called “Barbie’s World” which started out as an event that evolved into a clothing business. She is a down to earth person who enjoys putting a smile on people’s face. Barbie’s musical journey began in January 2018 when she did a freestyle which was intended to be a joke for friends and family. It went viral getting thousands of views, reposts and hundreds of comments encouraging her to do music. Barbie Cassh always doubted her ability to compose songs over the years. Putting that fear aside, she wrote her first single “F**kboy free” produced by “Gazza Diddi” OSMG. Barbie Cassh is a very diverse artist as she sings and DJs, many people will relate to her music because she has a song for everyone in her catalogue. Her long term goals are to change the world one person at a time. Barbie Cassh is also a philanthropist who will launch a campaign called “Don’t Touch Her” which focuses on protecting our kids against abuse in all forms. This will be a worldwide campaign. Look out for amazing things from Barbie Cassh, sending great music to the world. Red Ink: How long have you been on the scene? How long have you been on the scene? Barbie: “I have been on the scene about a year now, I really just getting started.” Red Ink: Do you write your own music? Barbie: “Yes, I write all my own songs. As a matter of fact the song you just heard was something very personal, it was a song I wrote for a little girl, it’s a tribute for this little girl who got murdered in Jamaica. She was only 8 year’s old. The little girl name and the song are Shante Skyers.” Red Ink: Oh… wow.... Did you know this girl personally? Barbie: “No, I didn’t I did make it my point of duty to go down to her funeral and learn all I could, then I wrote my song and shot my video and put it out there as tribute to raise awareness.” Red Ink: What made you get involved and feel so con-

nected to this story? barbie: “I am a mother and a woman and the story of a girl who was kidnapped and abused and then murdered really touched me. And I am actually launching an awareness campaign soon in Jamaica it is a ‘Don’t Touch Her’ campaign and it is about educating children and making them aware of what is a ‘good touch’ and what is a ‘bad touch.’ It is a movement and something that often gets ignored and it is about time to educate and not hide the truth from kids anymore.” Red Ink: How do you feel working in a male dominated industry like reggae and music as a whole? Barbie: “Honestly, I feel like it is an advantage, because I make sure I stand out, my persona and everything about me stands out. Of course the one female performing when all other acts are male will stand out. And that is how it is most of the time. So I always make the most of that situation and use it in my favor.” Red Ink: Any new singles coming out soon? Barbie: “Yes I have my third single coming out, it is called ‘Good Kitty.’ Just shot a video for that one and then I am heading out to Turks and Caicos to shoot a new video for my song ‘Need You.’” Red Ink: Who are you signed with” Barbie: “I am actually a freelance artist right now and would love to work with the right label.” Red Ink: Who is the one artist in the world that you love to collaborate or do something with? Barbie: “Celine Dion, would be my dream collaboration, as an international artist, there is no one woman greater in the industry.” “I would also love to collaborate with Sean Paul.” “Sean Paul….Get on my track.” This concludes our interview with Barbie Cassh, she is truly an amazing woman with a hugh heart, love for humanity and lots to offer in the music indusrty. It was a pleasure meeting her and getting to interview her at The Best of The Best 13th Annual Music Fest. u

Swing into summer AT THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Fazia Khan Parmar

A

re we all super pumped up that the temperatures are rising? Are you feeling a little more pep in your step as the days grow longer and longer? It is amazing how the warmer temperatures and longer sunshine hours can awaken our vitality. It’s true that the cooler, darker winter months can slow down cause the body to go in a semi hibernation mode where you just want to be in your pajamas and warm up our bodies with comfort foods. It’s no wonder we tend to pack on the pounds during winter. However, let’s put those cool memories behind us and focus on the now! I hope you all were able to do some or all of the AhMay-zing challenge from last month where we focused on staying hydrated and improving our digestion. This month let’s focus on eating fresh and stepping up our physical activity. If you leaf through your community news, you are bound to find a bunch of pop up farm stands selling fresh, local, and delicious veggies. Summer is a great time to savor the tastes of nature. Come on, we have to show our local farmers some love! I don’t know about you but I like to ditch the rich comfort foods for more light and zesty recipes instead. For a quick meal starter try slicing up a farm fresh tomato with a drizzle of olive oil, sprinkle of balsamic vinegar and sprinkling of sea salt. Sounds refreshing? If tomatoes aren’t your thing there is bound to be a salad that tickles your pickles. Starting off your meal with a salad is always a good idea to not only get some greens in but also to remind us to slow down and chew our food. Did you know that it takes 20 minutes for the brain to register that it is full. If you were to eat the typically fatty and starchy part of your meal first, you would potentially eat way more calories before you stomach tells your brain it is full. If you slow down your meal with a starter salad, you are more likely to eat fewer calories and still feel equally as full and satisfied. Here is a wonderful summer salad to kick start any light entree or add a protein and make it the main dish! I have not put any portion sizes so you can make this salad as large or as small as you like.u

SHEPTONE BAND The Shep-Tone Band hails from the parish of Clarendon in a town called Frankfield. The members are as follows:Ricardo Johnson (Bass), Javauney Cameron (lead Guitar), Marc Porter (Rhythm Guitar), Malcolm Wilson (Drums), Robert Carter (keyboard), Sanjay Wright (Keyboard), Judian Dacosta, Alizine White and Rajay Anderson (Vocals). The best thing about the band is that they are all extremely closely knitted and interact as loving brothers and sisters do and this without a doubt transfers to their performances. “Quality music is hard to come by in this day and age and so Shep-Tone Band is here to revive and bring authenticity back to the music which is our mantra.” It’s wonderful to see these youngsters doing such a great job with a positive outlook. Daughter of Reggae Legend saves the Reggae Girlz.....Twice Yes I am talking about Cedella Marley and her 5 year crusade to save the Jamaican Women's National Soccer Team from the abyss that is the male dominated Jamaican Football Federation. Cedella Marley, with a little help from her brothers, family name and her own incredible fortitude and ability to gather supporters has managed to not only resurrect the Women's National Soccer Team in Jamaica but help them become a true contender in this June's upcoming World Cup. Considering that the team had no coach, no funding and no training grounds just 5 years ago, after being disavowed by the JFF, that is an incredible feat and accomplishment. Bob Marley who preached peace, love and equality through his lyrics must be incredibly proud of his daughter from the heavens above. In 2014, Cedella received a flier from her son, after his own soccer practice here in Miami, asking for donations to help reorganize a Jamaican Women's National Soccer Team, she knew she had to do something. It was the first time she was hearing of this plight, because it wasn't making the news cycle in Jamaica. Most people just assumed that the the women's team wan't being talked about because it had not been a winning team, similar to the Men's team that only qualified for the World Cup just a single time, back in 1998. No one really knew that the women's team had been defunded and officially disbanded. Ms. Marley inquired about the status and then contacted the team members and rallied support in the way she knows best, through music and promotion. As CEO of Tuff Gong, Bob Marley's record label and also as the head of her late father's foundation, The Bob Marley Foundation, which is a charitable organization that is all about social intervention, she immediately started raising money and awareness for the Reggae Girlz soccer club's imminent resurrection. The next step was to create a buzz, so with the help of her brothers Stephen and Damian Marley they wrote and released a single "Strike Hard" in order to raise awareness the way the Marley Family does it best, through music. When all was said and done, Cedella manage to raise hundred's of thousands of dollars and drum up enough outside support to get the Reggae Girlz back into the FIFA 2015 World Cup Race and the team competed in the qualifying matches in the Late Spring and Early Summer of 2014. However, the team failed to qualify even though they did make it to the final qualifying match against Mexico. After various sports reporting interviews with the team, it became clear to the world that the team did not fail because it lacked skill, but because it lacked the basic necessities of a soccer club, it not have training grounds or equipment, it lacked food and water when travelling, and it lacked

a solid coach to guide them. And so Cedella's crusade was only beginning. The next major hurdle happened the next summer when the team failed to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics for the same reasons. After that failure the Jamaican Football Federation cancelled the team again. And that Phoenix which had risen from the ashes was back in the fire pit again. However, Ms. Marley's resolve did not waiver, nor did that of the team. When asked by ESPN in an interview, if she was surprised by the way things were going with the JFF, Cedella replied," Coming from Jamaica? Not really. I think they would like to see girls in bathing suits and tennis skirts versus cleats and soccer gear." Over the following two years Cedella secured more funding, donated more of her own time and money, and pressed on. She found a Head Coach willing to work for the merit of the cause, yeah, Hue Menzies, the coach of a successful youth soccer club in Orlando, FL, donated his time and commitment as a volunteer; since as stated before there was zero in the budget from the JFF for a head coach, because their was zero in the budget for the team at all. When interviewed by ESPN about why he decided to donate his time as head coach, Menzies, simply said," If the Marley's are doing something, it's real." That is what the Marley name still means to the world today. With a coach at the helm and private funding in place, the team was reinstated as a national team, and to the chagrin of the JFF who has now disavowed the team twice, the Reggae Girlz overcame all of the odds stacked against them and pulled off a "Miracle on Grass" as they defeated Panama in a nail biting game in the final World Cup qualifying match in October 2018, earning them a spot in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup, which starts this month. This match was not only significant to the team but also to women in nations throughout the Caribbean. This is the first time in FIFA World Cup history that a Women's Team from the Caribbean has made it passed qualifiers and earned a seat in any FIFA Women's World Cup.. People need to understand that this is a historic event, and this writer would be incredibly amazed and very disappointed if this story does not get made into a blockbuster motion picture. Feel free to borrow my title for it... "Miracle on Grass." Let's all congratulate the Jamaican National Women's Soccer Club on overcoming all obstacles and making it to the big stage. And let's all show gratitude to Cedella Marley for creating the opportunity for these incredible women to shine. And let's all thank the late and great Bob Marley for bringing such an incredible woman into this world. Good Luck Reggae Girlz and my the pride of Jamaica and the entire Caribbean carry you far in this 2019 World Cup.u By Michael Devine 25

In memory of my Dear friend Rayan Kishun Rayan you were taken much too soon from us. You will be missed dearly by all those who knew you. You have touched so many lives with your kindness, your loving and caring nature, your outgoingness, your love for music, your love for togetherness with family and friends and not forgetting your larger than life personility. You made every day a good day for everyone that you knew, whether it was from a text or a phone call or a simple conversation. Friends like you are rare to come by. You were one of my best friends and I’m so proud and honored to have had you in my corner since my teenage years. You’ve always made me feel special and became my biggest fan when we spoke about me doing RED INK Magazine again. The last conversation we had was about the Concert that I was covering for this issue. You were so excited for me to go and meet Shabba Ranks and SuperCat, two of your favorite Reggae artists. I couldn’t wait to come back and tell you all about it. I was not given that chance, instead I attended your funeral. I still can’t believe you’re gone. “The ones we love are never gone, they live within our hearts.” Rest In Peace my dear friend, heaven gained an Angel. I dedicate this issue to you. Love Naz
