A Shift in Admissions at Top Universities

FEATURE Is your child preparing to apply to a university in the United States? Admissions experts David Diebold and AJ Warner explain how admissions requirements and standards at top US universities are shifting and what you can do to prepare for these changes. Given the complexity of leading US universities’ admissions processes, several years of careful preparation by students and their families is crucial for a successful college application. Currently, scoring high on the SAT or ACT is no longer enough to be a competitive applicant, especially for Chinese students who face intense competition from other highachieving Chinese applicants for the limited places available at top universities. Skills and experiences beyond test scores, therefore, will determine whether a student is accepted or not. As there is no back door in the admissions process, advance preparation remains critical to success. This shift will come into play this year due to a number of new developments occurring in college admissions. Altogether, they foreshadow a new, quite different approach admissions officers will take when evaluating prospective applicants. Most students and their families, and even many professional advisors, have not yet taken these changes into account. This March, the SAT will undergo its first change in over ten years,
which will have a big impact on college admissions. Designed to empower underprivileged American students, the new SAT is different from the “brain teaser” exam it replaces. There is a new emphasis on more “regular” words, an essay that is optional, a new focus on the coursework in an average US high school, and the US “founding documents” like the US Constitution and Federalist Papers, and no penalty for guessing. This year, students need to prepare for a very different kind of test that requires more knowledge of US high school history. Not only has the SAT changed, but the overall importance of the SAT has diminished. Another 30 US universities, including schools like George Washington University, opted out of the SAT and ACT in 2015, making these tests optional. There are now approximately 800 universities that consider the SAT or ACT optional. This trend makes the student’s GPA, his or her extracurricular activities, and other accomplishments even more important in the admissions decision. An entirely new application option, the Coalition for Access, Affordability and Success (CAAS) application, will be offered for the first time this year to applicants for 80 top US universities including all of the Ivy Leagues. While the final details will not be available until this summer, the new application gives students the chance to file their coursework
starting from the 9th grade. This new, more comprehensive record and ongoing coercion from the universities will put much more emphasis than before on past coursework and less emphasis on one-time test scores like the SAT and ACT. In addition, more universities are emphasising diversity in their incoming freshman classes. This means that admission officers have greater flexibility to admit students with lower test scores and GPAs from targeted ethnicities, nationalities, religions, and socio-economic levels to yield their target freshman class. This makes it even more difficult for students from China who make up a large and growing number of applicants each year. Many top universities are nearing—if they have not already reached— the maximum number of Chinese students they can accept and keep the required diversity goals established by university administrators. Lastly, a comprehensive report on US high school education recently issued by the Harvard Graduate School of Education known as "Making Caring Common" has recommended that students’ community service activities during high school be given much more weight in the admissions process, and test scores much less weight, going forward. The combination of these developments underscore that 2016 will be a year of significant changes and make admissions to top universities even more challenging. Shandong Education Guide

After earning a Masters Degree in Education Literature in the United States, Barbara Xu returned to her native city of Qingdao to help other students study abroad. Her consultancy company is unique for the mentoring program that she has implemented. Barbara tells us more about her company’s approach, and how she helps her students succeed in education and in life.
Why did you decide to use a mentoring system? Barbara: I adopted a mentoring system because I found advisors helped me a lot when I was studying in the US. In many universities there, college advisors have an open-door policy. I could tell my advisor what was going on in my life and ask for advice about my academic career anytime during his office hours. I adopted a
similar advising and mentoring system to provide a higher level of accessibility to my students. Can you tell me more about your Better, Brighter, Together program? Better, Brighter, Together is an online group that brings young professionals and students together. Professionals share their personal stories about how they succeeded in what they Shandong Education Guide

did and give career advice to students. Mentors in the group also share different scholarship, internship, volunteer, and job opportunities, so the students have the chance to gain realworld experience. How do you help your students set themselves apart in their college applications? When I worked at a university in the US, one of the biggest problems that I noticed was that admissions officers couldn’t distinguish between the names of Chinese candidates, let alone their overall applications. We help our students by providing them with as many extracurricular activities as possible to help them stand out. This allows them to go to the admissions officer and tell them “I’m from China, but I’m different from the rest.” For example, I have a student who rode horses and another who played tennis competitively. These are some extracurricular activities we have

campus activities, find oncampus jobs and internships, and try something new everyday.
What are some of the biggest challenges Chinese students face when living in the US? The biggest challenges include adjusting to a different culture, overcoming the language barrier, and making friends from all different backgrounds, not just from China. As an increasing number of Chinese students study abroad, it’s becoming difficult for Chinese students to remove themselves from a Chinese-speaking environment. Additionally, being alone in a new country is difficult. It’s important that students pay attention to their physical as well as their mental well-being as they are sure to experience academic and social pressure in a new environment. Finally, Chinese students need to adjust to a different education system. I encourage students to speak up in class, participate in on-
What is one way that you help your students land a job after college? One way we do this is we teach students about skill sets. Before you apply for a job, volunteer opportunity, or an internship, you submit your resume. In order to write a successful resume, you need to know what you’re good at. For example, you might be good at communication or programming. You have to be able to define your skills first before you’re able to tell the interviewer or hiring committee: “Hey this is something that I can do now—I want to turn this into a career.” If you want to obtain a special skill set however, you have to know how to get there. That’s where our mentoring system comes into play. Our mentors give students a road map that they can follow so they can reach their academic

and career goals. Applying to Top US Boarding Schools 申请美国顶尖寄宿学校 Getting accepted into a US boarding school is hard work. AJ Warner, an application consultant, explains how to improve your child’s application and increase his or her chances of getting accepted by a topranked boarding school. More and more Chinese parents want to send their sons and daughters to prestigious US boarding schools for a high school education. This trend corresponds to China’s dramatic economic development over the past 20 years. Before then, Chinese Ph.D. and graduate students made up the majority of Chinese students going to the US. Most students at that

time needed scholarships to afford the cost of an overseas education. Ten years ago, the number of Chinese students attending US universities began to rise sharply from negligible numbers. In 2006, Michigan State University enrolled around 60 undergraduate students from China. That number has surged to around 4,000 Chinese undergraduates today. Five years ago, the same phenomena spread to boarding schools. The number of Chinese families interested in sending their children to boarding schools in the US is surpassing the number of available openings. In fact, Chinese applicants applying to
top-ranked boarding schools in 2015 experienced tremendous competition. The acceptance rate for the top ten boarding schools was 2.37% while the acceptance rate for schools ranked 11-25 and 26-50 was not much higher at 2.47% and 3.44%, respectively. It wasn’t until boarding schools ranked 101-200 that the acceptance rate became more reasonable at 20.83%. However, that still means that boarding schools ranked 101-200 rejected 80% of applicants. In spite of these low acceptance rates, many Chinese parents still believe their son or daughter will be the exception. The reason that the acceptance

schools ranked 11-25 and 26-50 were also high at 107 and 102, respectively. Even for schools ranked 51-100, the average TOEFL score was 93. The stiff competition among applicants allows the boarding schools to select candidates who are more likely to be accepted to topranking universities or liberal arts colleges, which in turn improves the overall ranking of the boarding school.

Boarding schools prefer to create a global environment and carefully maintain a diverse student body. As a result, most top boarding schools admit 4-6 Chinese students in the 9th grade and 1-2 Chinese students in the 10th and 11th grades. Moreover, the increasing number of applicants competing for so few available openings directly influence the boarding schools’ rising test requirements. The average 2015 TOEFL score for students entering the top 10 US boardings schools was 112, while the average for students at
Interviews also play a critical role in the admissions process. Students are expected to perform well on tests as well as excel in interviews. Students need to have an outgoing and engaging personality to earn admission to the best boarding schools. Just like with TOEFL scores, by selecting students who have strong interview skills, boarding schools can select students who are most likely to get accepted to top universities later on. For families thinking about sending their son or daughter to a top US boarding school, they need to reevaluate their ranking requirements and be open to boarding schools ranked outside of the top 50. If parents insist that their child only attends a top 50 ranked boarding school, they will most likely be disappointed in March when boarding schools release their admissions results. The good news is that boarding schools ranked outside the top 100 still offer high quality education that prepares students to gain admission to top universities.
ABOUT AJ WARNER For the past decade, AJ Warner has worked in China helping students attend top undergraduate and graduate programs in the United States. His passion for helping students started during his MBA at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business when a South Korean classmate found out that AJ had earned a full two-year scholarship to the MBA program and asked AJ to help his friends back in Seoul with their applications. This experience would later influence AJ to embark on a career in education consulting. In 2005, AJ decided to leave Deloitte Consulting to follow his passion and help students in China enter top university and graduate programs. He founded Touchdown Education in Beijing to help students score their own “touchdown” by getting accepted into their dream schools. AJ is a member of the American Chamber of Commerce’s Education Group and sits on the Advisory Board of Beijing Kids magazine. He is also the EO Beijing Int’l Chapter President. AJ lives in Beijing.

Participation In order to balance the speaking time between students, we rely on the interdependency of horizontal interactions, meaning that the students are put in a situation in which they must communicate and participate in order to complete their daily tasks. For example, to help beginners practice, you can organise a speed-dating-style activity. Give a unique profile with specific characteristics to each student and different criteria for their search to find their better-half. In order to find a partner, they will have to exchange information with other members of the group by asking and answering questions. Our goal is to create dynamic activities in order to keep students interested.

Active approach to learning Active learning is key to achieving fluency in a foreign language. The following are the steps we take in order to maximise our students’ learning experience.
Step 1: Discover! Students are presented with a text or a listening passage. They must analyse it, guided by the set of questions they have been given. This allows students to develop critical thinking skills in a second language. Step 2: Conceptualise! Students analyse real life excerpts and are encouraged to enquire about the way the language is presented. When they do this they are more likely to remember the particularities of the language. We spoke with Oliver Mueller, Managing Director of the Goethe-Language Centre at Qingdao University, about the importance of understanding the culture of the target language. How important is culture in terms of learning another language? Learning another language not

only helps you to communicate with others, but it also gives you better insight into another culture through the ways in which people speak and what people talk about. Language conveys sentiments and transports emotions. There is also meaning in things that are left unsaid, and sometimes you need to learn how to read between the lines. This includes understanding societal taboos. It is crucial to understand what
topics might not be appropriate in specific situations and how to express yourself in the right way. What would be inappropriate in Germany? In general, German people do not like to speak directly about private issues, especially with people they have just met. For example, last week I attended a German Corner in Qingdao. The topic was about political parties, and one of the German
FEATURE speakers was asked by a student which party he would vote for in the next election. The speaker obviously felt uncomfortable with this question and struggled to give a proper answer. While most Germans are private people, they tend to express their feelings in a very direct way, especially if they dislike something. If you come from a different cultural background, this might make you feel uncomfortable or hurt by seemingly harsh words. Adapting to a new culture is a challenging task, because there will inevitably be some misunderstandings in the communication process. How can students who go aboard avoid such faux pas? Moving to another country can be a very exciting and life changing experience, but if you do not know how to (re)act in the new environment, it can be a frustrating experience which could also lead to isolation or depression, especially for people who are experiencing a different culture for the first time. At the Goethe-Language Centre, we want to raise awareness of such cultural differences. We not only teach students how to use German properly, but we also help students to understand German from a cultural perspective. In China for example, it is normal to say your hobby is sleeping, but in Germany it means you are lazy and maybe even boring. This might be a small example, but if you are alone in a new country and looking to make new friends, this might not be
the impression you want to give someone you’ve just met.

What mistakes do people often make when learning a new language? Practicing how to actually speak the language is key. Unfortunately, many language schools in China still focus exclusively on teaching vocabulary and grammar. Another problem is that they often make students believe they can master a new language in just a few weeks. Learning a language takes time, and everyone learns at a different pace. Furthermore, students should ensure their school employs professional teachers. Being a native speaker does not automatically qualify someone as a language teacher. This is why the German classes at the Goethe-Language Centre at Qingdao University are based on the Common European Framework of reference for language learning, teaching, and assessment, and we employ professional teachers who
Is German more difficult than other languages to study? Many students complain about German grammar, and when compared to English it is indeed more complex. This also makes it more interesting and diverse. To master the German language you should allow yourself to make mistakes, especially at the beginning. Avoid building too many barriers in your head by thinking about the correct grammatical usage all the time. Germans will understand you and if you keep practicing German, the awareness of what sounds right or wrong will increase naturally.

to Improve your IELTS Writing
如何提高雅思写作
University Professor Paul Mc Mahon shares some tips to help you ace the much-feared writing section of the IELTS exam. The popularity of the IELTS exam has grown exponentially in recent years and is well on its way to surpassing TOEFL as the most important exam for students wanting to study abroad. The reason for this is that it has a better structure, with a broader range of questions and requires candidates to use more “everyday” English.
However, it does share an unsurprising similarity with TOEFL: The writing section is often considered the most difficult. Here are some tips to get a higher score on the written test. The writing section consists of two parts, the first of which is a graph or chart with questions designed to test your ability to reproduce visual information on paper. This isn’t too difficult, just make sure you use a variety of words to explain the information. If it’s a graph you can use words like growth, increase, rise, slump,
drop, or fall. Don't use the same word too many times, that will cost you points. Furthermore, don’t repeat the same idea using different words: The stock price fell in July when there was a downturn in price. “Stock price fell” and “downturn in price” mean the same thing. Examiners will be looking for this, and when they find it they will punish you, because—and trust me—they hate it. After you read the question prompt, don’t immediately start Shandong Education Guide

FEATURE writing your answer. The exam is designed to give you enough time to think about what you want to write and make an outline. There will also be key words in the question that examiners will be looking to see repeated in your answer. These are easy to spot as they are the most important words in the sentence. Section two is harder and will require more independent thinking. You will be asked to give your opinion or to compare two things. The first thing the examiner will be looking for is the use of transition words. In your argument, rather than use short sentences, link them together with words like: and, also, or, nor, in addition, plus, however, although etc.

Avoid using firstly, secondly, thirdly as it is considered poor English, and never use the word “maybe”. This pops up all the time in IELTS answers. The question will be worded so that you are asked to support your argument. Using “maybe” makes the writer sound unsure of their stance. Take these two sample sentences: Maybe lack of sleep can affect students’ ability to study. Lack of sleep affects students’ ability to study. The first one sounds like someone who has put no thought or effort into their answer, whereas the second sentence sounds authoritative, like the opinion of someone who knows what they are talking about.
Before you take the exam the best way to improve your writing is to read, read, read. The more books you read the more grammar you will be exposed to. The more grammar you are exposed to, the more accurate and complex your own grammar will become. Finally, my number one tip and the one that will help you get the best grade is to be different. When writing your answer, be original and try to write something that nobody else in that room will write. Examiners are human, and like all humans they will get bored. They are grading hundreds of papers that all have similar answers, so if you make your answer different, they will love you for it.

My wife and I were constantly picking Jayden up, twisting, dancing, and assisting him down slides, so much that it felt like my wife and I got a better workout than our son. GYMBOREE focuses on parent-baby communication through play. Instead of letting babies play by themselves, the teachers at GYMBOREE encourage parents to be involved in the activities.

Qingdao No.1 International School of Shandong Province (QISS) is a forward-thinking school with a strong emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. Our K-12 students have access to multiple science labs where they are able to apply the concepts they learn in the classroom and gain a deeper understanding through handson experience. QISS recently adopted the Next Generation Science Standards, developed by a partnership of 26 states in the US, the National Research Council, and the National Science Teachers Association, which aim to produce students with the scientific literacy needed to

succeed in the modern world. On Saturday, 5 March, the entire QISS community came together for the 2016 QISS Science Fair. For several weeks students from every grade level planned, developed, designed, and created science experiments of all kinds. The students carefully followed the scientific method
Students presented their Science Fair projects to a panel of judges who evaluated the projects based on a rubric developed by the QISS Science Department. The students presented their projects to the judges as well as an audience that consisted of community members, parents, staff, teachers, and their peers for a truly authentic experience. After judging was completed, the rubric results were tabulated and everyone gathered in the theatre for the announcement of winning projects from each grade level. The winning

topics included an analysis of phototropism, yogurt culture growth in various environments, an attempt to change copper into gold and silver through alchemy, and an analysis of the death rates of bacteria by UVGI exposure. The 2016 QISS Science Fair provided the entire QISS community with a valuable opportunity to experience the impressive scientific work undertaken by our students. The teachers at QISS set high expectations for all students, and it was outstanding to see those expectations met and exceeded in this competitive academic setting. We look forward to making the next Science Fair at QISS even better—and we hope to see you there!

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) AT ISQ

ISQ alumna and Seoul National University (SNU) pre-med student, Maria Paek, talks about how ISQ’s curriculum and Advanced Placement (AP) classes prepared her to pursue her calling.
For me, high school was a time to explore my diverse interests, and the AP curriculum at ISQ— as well as its extracurricular activities—provided me with the perfect environment to grow and experiment with different subjects. Moreover, I believe my AP course experience and scores were one of the reasons my application was looked on favourably by SNU’s highly competitive admissions process. AP classes are more demanding and challenging than regular
classes, so having a good AP record showed colleges that I was a serious student. In my opinion, the biggest advantage of ISQ’s AP Program is its flexibility. Being able to study any subject that I wanted was extremely helpful and liberating, especially since I had no idea what I was going to major in at university for a long time. I ended up taking many AP classes including Art History, Chemistry, Biology, Comparative

Government, and World History, in addition to teacher-guided independent studies for several others. Studying such an incredible variety of AP classes at ISQ allowed me to gain a wide knowledge base, and also prepared me to make an informed decision about what I wanted to study when I arrived at university. ISQ’s curriculum allows students to take a maximum of 3 AP classes per year. I found this policy to be beneficial because it makes room for students to engage in other classes such as For the 2016-2017 school year, ISQ will offer 15 AP courses with the ability for students to independently study more subjects. ISQ will be the fourth school in Mainland China to offer the Advanced Placement Capstone Program as of the 2016-2017 school year. If students want to take more than three AP classes, they can buy a review book and prepare themselves for additional AP exams, which many students do. Another crucial advantage of taking AP classes is that most colleges accept AP scores as college credit. If you earn a score of 4 or above on an AP subject exam (even 3 for some colleges), most American colleges and over 600 universities in 60 other countries will give you credit for a general/introductory course. Unfortunately, I did not get credit for my AP courses since there is no such policy here at SNU. SNU does not recognise IB courses or AP classes, but this does not mean that the knowledge I gained from AP courses is useless. On the contrary, AP classes have prepared me to succeed in college. It really is a big plus to be equipped with comprehensive knowledge on a
subject—or even better—to have a thorough grasp of several subjects, since AP allows you to study as many subjects as you want. At ISQ, not just the AP program, but the school’s overall curriculum is designed to help students realise their potential. Throughout my 10 years as a student at ISQ, I found so many classes to be intellectually stimulating and conducive to personal growth. This is also, in large part, thanks to the teachers who are always trying to create a genuinely healthy learning environment and community. Agents of Peace: Peer Mediation at QAIS 和平使者 : 青岛美亚国际 学校里的同龄人调解 Dr. Eric Dustman, Head of Lower School at QAIS and Chair of the Accreditation Commission for the American Montessori Society, was formerly the Director of the New School Montessori in Cincinnati, Ohio. Here, he shares how students and the school as a whole are benefiting from the new Peer Mediation program at QAIS. Nurturing community spirit and global mindsets within an international school can have a lasting and widespread impact on the community. At Qingdao Amerasia International School (QAIS), we place a unique

emphasis on students’ social and emotional development, including their ability to take action to resolve conflicts. This year, we are empowering some of our youngest students to be agents of peace by engaging them in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) Leadership Council, where they are given the responsibility and opportunity to take an active role in growing our appreciation and care for one another. Since August 2015, 32 students have trained and engaged within the PYP Leadership Council as peer mediators, working
daily to support the growth of themselves and others. Offering important strategies for critical thinking and productive problem solving, peer mediation empowers students and affords them rich opportunities to contribute to the overall school climate. Mediators help create an atmosphere of care through their leadership and presence at key points throughout the school day, and encourage dialogue and perspective-taking between students who are in conflict. The process invites everyone to practice and apply these skills in real-life situations and helps students learn to settle
FEATURE potentially charged situations in positive and constructive ways. In a short time, our mediators have helped everyone develop important skills including an understanding of conflict itself, the value of confidentiality, effective communication, and intentional listening.
Peer mediation offers strategies for critical thinking and productive problem solving.
These skills enable the children to understand the important role that they can all play in supporting the growth of a rich, diverse, and welcoming community. As the children mature in their abilities, they are poised to assume more responsibility in the future. To aid this effort, our students in the PYP make four promises to their peers, their parents, their teachers, and themselves:

The program is easily visible in the classroom, on the playground, and elsewhere on campus, and all students are committed to seeing it maintained and enhanced. Programs like Peer Mediation and the PYP Leadership Council are just a few examples of how we strive to make QAIS a safe and happy place to learn and grow. At QAIS, we all play an active role in spreading our passion for community and collaboration beyond the walls of our campus, carrying that passion with us around the world.

We also differentiate between native and non-native Chinese speakers, utilising different teaching materials for both groups. The YCIS Chinese Curriculum Research Division
(CCRD)—a group of teachers and experts based in Shanghai—has developed YCIS’s curriculum. In recent years, many foreign secondary schools have begun cooperating with YCIS, adopting teaching materials originally developed by YCIS CCRD.
Secondary Curriculum Focuses on Global Vision The YCIS secondary curriculum emphasises global education. The lower secondary course focuses on world citizenship, international thinking, English and Chinese bilingual education, character education, and art cultivation. This allows students to explore different areas of learning while training them to become citizens of the world and responsible in the community.
