Adjusting Together Being a family, with success, in Qingdao Cathy Ben-David
Whether you plan to be in China for a short period of time or a few years, it is important to be prepared. For many of us it is an unexpected opportunity brought about through work relocation, one that was not foreseen earlier. Many of us arrive fresh from our homelands with no awareness of the language or cultural differences. If you are coming to China as a family then it is not just your welfare that matters, your spouse and children become an integral part of the success rating of the experience. So, what are the key points to bear in mind? What are the main areas for concern for the members of your family? How can you help to make it a colourful and worthwhile experience?
Statistics prove that the majority of those holding the work permit are men; therefore statistics prove that the majority of ‘dependent’ spouses are wives. The family is very much part of the success story; in my experience and time in Qingdao, the family becomes the root of the success or failure. So, how can you turn your duration in Qingdao to benefit all the members of your family? How do you hand them a fruitful experience? Let’s assume that your company or place of work is assisting you on the necessary introduction of how to understand social dynamics, group dynamics, etiquette, how to greet a person, exchanging business cards, social status and hierarchy together with the important general concepts of working in China. Let’s assume that you have
a bilingual PA or team of English-speaking staff. Let’s assume you have found a place to call home for the duration of your time in Qingdao – you wave goodbye to your spouse and children one morning and set off for the new challenges of your posting. Things appear to be settling down.

aware of your surroundings, walk the streets to get your bearings. Do the groundwork in the week to find places for your family to see together at the weekend. Make contact with Qingdao Expat Community via www.qingdaoexpat.com, look out for the Qingdao Expat Magazine at major hotels, or contact directly at qingdaoexpat@yahoo.com. Check to see what activities and social gatherings are happening in the foreign community. Even if it is not exactly what you would be doing ‘back home’, make the effort to go anyway and start the connection with people. Make contact with the Parent Organisation of the school where your children attend; these mums can receive you with a wonderful welcome and will be keen to answer any questions. At YCIS, new parents receive a personal welcome in the Parent Organisation Newsletter and are connected with the homeroom mum. Join them for the planned lunches or ask to meet for a coffee. Remember, at your child’s school the social network is there to support you. Get involved as a volunteer at your child’s school; use your school contact person and Parent Organisation to help make your time and talents very worthwhile.
Social events for the family are organised in the community through the above sources, such as the Easter Party, Annual Welcome BBQ in September, Halloween Party, walks, beach BBQs, playgroups, and trips to the mountains. There are also a number of major fund raising events through the year, though these are adult-attended.
Avoiding Disorientation Always bear in mind that you can not re-create all that you had back in your home country. Try to maintain realistic expectations; if you were lucky enough to be offered a pre-location visit then be very observant and ask lots of questions to build up the right expectations. Find something that holds your interest and reminds you of who you are. Sit and talk with the contact person of the school. Once you feel your child is safe and secure at school, this will alleviate any stress you may be having over the relocation and settling down period.
Impact on Your Children Children approach the relocation in different ways and age plays heavily on this. Excitement, anticipation, resentment and fear are some emotions they will feel. If you feel your child is old enough to be part of the family discussions then include them from the start. Be open about the fact that the new home, new school and new food and so on will all be different but will not remain

Your child now has the fortune to carry his own background and be immersed in the eastern world; an opportunity to absorb and comprehend the people, the culture and language of the future. This blend results in a global young person, with widened horizons and a flexible aptitude. Treat the learning of the language as a game at first; play ‘I spy with my little eye…’ using a chosen Chinese character when out and about, looking at the written signs. Make the initial stages of speaking the new language as a fun part of going out, until they naturally become more confident; the bilingual development of a child’s brain is a gift. To witness a child drift effortlessly between languages will fill any parent with pride. Make the most of this opportunity to widen your child’s visions; cultural and racial acceptance are crucial parts of good development. Choose a school that is going to encourage full embracement of all global citizens and show cultural respect. A Model of Literacy Reading aloud to your child

How can read-aloud activities benefit your child? They allow any child to enjoy a story that he or she could not or might not be willing to read independently. As the child listens to a story, the child hears the language (English or mother tongue) flow in a natural tone. At the same time, new vocabulary is being introduced in a natural setting within the good literature. Likewise, the child has an opportunity to ask questions in a safe environment - your home. At strategic points in your read-aloud, you could ask your child some questions regarding the section read. As you ask open-ended questions, you are engaging your Children of all ages benefit from reading good literature. All research proves children enhance listening skills, increase vocabulary, improve comprehension skills and develop a joy for reading. Teachers encourage parents, guardians and care providers to engage in read-aloud activities at home. Children of all ages benefit from being read a good book. Sometimes we forget that older children also enjoy being read a meaningful book; likewise, children of all ages can reap the benefits from a read-aloud at home. Some parents ask which language should be used for read-aloud activities. The language should not be the limiting factor of reading good literature to children. Since the read-aloud activity is for the development of the joy of literature and social bonding with family members at home, the mother tongue is suitable to activate interest in developing minds for adventure, suspense or nonfiction. Please keep in mind the interest of the child. Thus, you must get to know the likes of your child and pick stories or nonfiction that will entertain and generate inquiry in your child’s mind. Once you discover your child’s interest, you and your child are ready to begin an adventure of snuggling up with a wonderful story or a factual journey of a topic of interest. Think of how much better sharing a good literature or nonfiction book between you and your child is versus watching a non-engaging television program. Perhaps the mindless video and computer games could be tossed out the window in favour of a good read aloud?

This will have a long term effect on your child’s reading, and your child will gain meaningful information during his or her future independent reading, which is a goal of all literate citizens of the world. Fathers are an important part of the read-aloud equation. Some research points out the increased benefit to children who are read to by dad. Please, fathers take some time out of your busy schedule from the office to read aloud with your child, especially to daughters. There is a social component that makes it important for fathers to bond with daughters, and the read aloud is a powerful tool to build a healthier mind in a child. As a result, fathers do not make any excuses regarding why you do not have time to read to your child. It is statistically more common for moms to engage in this activity. As you consider your opportunity to be an excellent role model that reads for the joy of it, remember to read good literature to your child at home. Similarly, demonstrate the numerous opportunities to your child for gaining knowledge through reading. Let’s make reading a meaningful and joyous activity that can be enjoyed by the entire family. culture schools Usually we are about 10 parents with their kids. The group is very international and reflects Qingdao's expat parents’ community: currently there are Australian, British, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Swedish and Turkish kids, but the mix is likely to change as expats come and go. Kids sing, dance, use instruments, learn to listen to music (different tempo and volume), have opportunities to watch and communicate with other kids and to spend an intensive fun and learning time with their parents. The language of the group (and the majority of songs) is English, but we learn songs also in other languages (currently French and Chinese, other languages will follow).
Kids Monkey Around Meeting, and making music MUSICAL MONKEYS! (MM) is a parent-led group that aims to introduce very young kids - infants and toddlers - to the charm of music and song. Veronika Vildman has been involved in the programme for a few years, introducing her daughters Sofie Marie (2.5 years) and Emily Anna (6 months) to the joys of music. Having joined the organisation in December 2007, Veronika now hosts the sessions in her home, making what she and her daughters consider their favourite morning of the week. Veronika taught us a few things about Monkey business.
What does a MM session look like? MM is focused on very young kids who don’t attend any kindergarten yet - the youngest are infants only couple of months old, the oldest kids are over 3 years old. The regular

The kids not only learn to coordinate rhythm of songs or rhymes with their body movements, but regular attendance helps their language development, body awareness, rhythmic proficiency and auditory skills. Further, they have another opportunity to meet other kids of similar ages and expand their social interactions.

The hour is divided into three parts, each 20 minutes long. First we sing and dance to songs that children know well already – the songs are accompanied by body movements and fingerplays (If you are happy and you know it, Row, row, row your boat, etc.). After a break for refreshments, there is another 20 minute block that features a new song, singing with musical instruments and distinguishing fast (allegro) and slow (adagio) or loud (forte) and quiet (piano), there is a short relaxation massage and watching a children’s music clip on TV. Each session is opened with a welcome song and concluded with a goodbye song.
Music can create a special closeness and joy to those who experience it together. MM bring this to me in Qingdao friendships and great teamwork. Rockstar 101 Making the band
Brendan Madden, one of Qingdao's most wellknown rock n' roll musicians, wants to pass his craft to future generations. A teacher at Qingdao American International School by day, he opened a guitar class to 7th, 8th and 9th graders at the school in 2008 but this year found something wanting in his lesson plans. "I decided I didn't want them to study the guitar anymore," he said. "I wanted them to play the guitar." Madden says anybody can pick up an acoustic, download the fingerings to Hotel California, and figure out the tune. However, there lies not the true pleasure of music.

He and the students worked together to figure out how to convey each song's meaning through shot angles, colours and actions. James's mastery of Adobe AfterEffects special effects software came in handy - one shot features Madden holding the students in his hands and wading through the Yellow Sea.

"I wanted the students to explore the guitar through their own ears, not through something that's already been done," he explained. He guided students to create a basic tune, and then add an introduction, verses and choruses. Next, they wrote English lyrics and learned how to use a computer software program to record their songs and add sound effects. That's when Madden realised, "What's a song without a music video?" He collaborated with Steven James, technology teacher at QAIS, to have

"Let's hope his new song and video can get him a new one," Madden said with a smile. "But seriously, one of the greatest benefits to the students has been the growth in their confidence. As students prepare to move from our local international schools into one of many university systems around the world, it is important to be aware of different standardised testing opportunities that can enrich their education while helping in the university application process.
are able to sit for the assessment. Many Korean academies have classes that teach test-taking skills and give practice SAT tests to allow students as much practical advantage as possible when taking the SAT. QMIS and QISS are the only testing centres in Qingdao for the PSAT and the SAT.
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are rigorous courses taught at the level of a university freshman class. Each AP class must be audited and approved by the College Board, a US not-for-profit membership association. Since these courses are more rigourous than regular classes, students must meet certain AP course requirements to enroll. Students who wish to graduate with an AP diploma must have enrolled and taken the AP exams in each of the following 6 subject areas: First Language, Second Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and Fine Arts. A major advantage of taking AP courses and scoring well on the exams is that many US colleges and universities grant college credit for these courses (even if you only take one). Both QMIS and QISS offer AP courses for high school students who are up to the challenge.
Two familiar language proficiency tests that international students in Qingdao should be aware of are the HSK and TOEFL exams. The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is China's national standardised test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test is the most widely accepted English-language test in the world. Both of these language proficiency exams are offered at various times throughout the year at many local Chinese universities. The main campuses that administer these exams are Qingdao University and Ocean University.
The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) is an assessment that measures the critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills students will need for higher education. This assessment assists students to prepare for the SAT (see below), gives personalised feedback on test performance, and allows students to participate in the Student Search Service which compares their scores and interests with universities and colleges in the US. The PSAT is administered during mid-October at authorised testing centres. The most widely accepted exam used in the US to help college admissions officers make fair and informed admission decisions is the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The SAT tests students’ basic academic knowledge as well as their ability to think, problem-solve and communicate. Internationally, the SAT is administered 6 times throughout the school year. Each testing centre decides how many and which tests will be offered at their testing site. In China, only students that attend a school which is a SAT testing centre
When thinking about attending a college or university in the United States of America students need to know that admissions offices are looking at the whole student, not just academics. The university will also look to see if the student has participated in service or volunteer work, sports teams, extra curricular clubs, and leadership roles.

Qingdao students planning on attending universities in Europe, British Commonwealth countries, Hong Kong or Canada should know that the universities in these countries will also accept AP and SAT scores from international students. If a student is a non-native English speaker they will most likely be required to have a standard level TOEFL score. When choosing either a high school or a university, regardless of the curriculum or tests offered, it is essential to do your research on the calibre of the schools you are considering. A school with an excellent reputation and track record will be able to provide your child with a quality education that will meet the requirements of universities throughout the world. Student applications and essays are also key factors for admission to university. If a non-native English speaker is looking to attend a US university they will most likely be required to sit for a TOEFL test. Korean universities place most stock in academics, therefore AP courses, GPA, SAT and transcripts require critical consideration as a student prepares large portfolios of information for submission. There is also much value placed in certificates and awards received for extracurricular activities. For students who have studied abroad, having a certificate of higher learning in languages, such as the HSK, TOEFL or TOEIC exams, is an excellent benefit for admission to top Korean universities.

Apples to Apples
Little kids mean a lot THE DYNAMICS Big Apple is an ideal mix of Chinese and International. Most expat parents want their children to be exposed to Chinese while being nurtured in a more international atmosphere. Well, we definitely offer that. But we also have what we call an “All-Day-English” class with less Chinese, where a western English teacher is present all day. Part of our perfect blend is the stability we give the children while being open to changes. Here’s an example of the stability: Our teachers are in it for the long haul. Even the foreign teachers. What usually happens is that a preschool hires many different (and changing) foreign teachers for a few hours here and there, but at Big Apple, our teachers become part of the ‘family.’ Here are some examples of our openness to change: • We utilize Montessori-aspects even in our non-Montessori classrooms. (Though we do offer one full-fledged Montessori classroom as well). • We recently gave each child one of those beautiful, little sachets filled with (fragrant!) herbs to hang from their neck that were recommended by the municipal health bureau for avoiding the hand, foot and mouth disease. Just one little example of how we always stay abreast in health and hygiene issues. • We explore (safe) outdoor activities such as cherry and berry picking, taking parents along for the ride, always asking for feedback in any activity. THE PHILOSOPHY Each child has their own learning style and deserves personalised attention, a nurturing environment, and the best available resources. Also, preschoolers learn best at play, with freedom to explore (within limits). They do not need a drill sergeant for a teacher. We emphasise creativity: Music, movement and multi-media materials help master the broad range of educational aspects. These include body (sports, hygiene, etc.), mind (math, language, etc.) and soul (e.g. learning to live with others; being genuinely loved and cared for by staff ). Joy Joy Children’s Language School, relatively new in Qingdao, is part of a Taiwanese chain of English language education institutions. Their curriculum is entirely defined inhouse, at their headquarters in Taiwan, where they have over 200 schools. In Qingdao, the school’s pupils are divided into two categories. The large majority of their student body are extracurricular learners of English, attending evening classes. There are 1,000 students currently enrolled, the majority of whom are Chinese. They also offer full weekly courses, with a total attendance of around 55. Of these, around 50% are Chinese and the rest are largely comprised of Koreans. Target Ages and Content Joy employ an immersive language learning approach, with classes taught entirely in English. As mentioned previously, their teaching content is entirely independent - they teach from textbooks created exclusively for Joy, and employ teaching methods designed to hone an English learner’s speaking, listening and reading. The youngest students are two years old, and with students of this age, Joy employs an education-with-entertainment approach, including story classes, art classes and music classes. In their mid-to-high school age range, 6-15, classes are divided according to language ability, and taught from the extensive range of specialised programs. There are 3 full-time English teachers and a number of part time foreign staff. KISQ KISQ is 8 years old. The school began with less than 50 students. With the vision and leadership of Principal Bianca Park the school has grown quickly. We now have about 550 students. The programs have been building strength over the years from an ESL program to the Intensive English Department (IED), to the present Advanced Academic English Program (AAE). KISQ is a very unique school. It has a very professional, dedicated, and hard working staff that includes Chinese, Korean, and Western teachers. Students can enjoy studying Chinese along with a strong English program that is aligning its curriculum with state standards from the USA. There is also a strong Korean program, lead by Mrs. Jackie Park, for students who want to attend a Korean university. KISQ has a bright future. The KISQ Library was added to our school last year. It was the vision of Lyle Smith to make the library a reality. Through his hard work and dedication, it now has many books and computers to test students’ reading progress with the SRC and SRI reading programs.
The Model United Nations (MUN) program is a strong program at KISQ. It gives the students a chance to conference and network with international students from many countries about real life problem solving. Our students have traveled to Beijing, Seoul, and conferences within Qingdao. Our students will participate in a conference in Singapore later this year. The program is headed by MUN Coordinator Christine Zahran.

Qingdao American International School (QAIS) prepares students for college, work and life in an English speaking setting.
