Hot Mum Makeover!
Albert Einstein once said, “The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.” While the truth is still out there waiting to be found, we decided to get started on the beauty part with the help of the talented makeover team at TONI&GUY. Jieling Liu reports (again) on how to become a more beautiful and elegant mummy from head to toe.
Hair Design Natural elegance is a familiar trend in the fashion industry. However, a simple style of straight neat hair can be just as charming. In fact a good straight hairstyle can bring out a sense of freshness and unpretentiousness in people, as well as adding to an elegant temperament.

Anna Igumnova Anna’s Russian accent is modulated by a low and lovely soft voice. She also has healthy skin and is an ideal height. Her hair is luscious brown with only a touch of grey and complemented with voluminous natural curls. She dresses with a Northern European demeanor with simple earthy colours. And her typical style is everyday casual.
Makeover at: TONI&GUY Qingdao, Olympic Sailing Centre Branch 变身地点:TONI&GUY青岛奥帆中心店
Hairstylist Mark suggested a “Transient Cut” – one of their classic cuts – to Anna, emphasizing her dynamic yet modest temperament. After the cutting, Mark applied a handful of Sebastian Thickefy Foam to make sure Anna’s hair stayed light and voluminous, while also matching her gentle appearance.
Makeup Design Anna has fine smooth skin with a light sheen, hence Andy - the Makeup artist used what he thought was only necessary. A thin layer of MAC foundation was applied to the contours of her face. After that he applied some light earth coloured eye shadow lightened with pearl pigment. The blush, also MAC’s, immediately brought out her hidden characteristics with the pink hue. Finally Andy applied a modest
brick-coloured lipstick that she happened to have brought with her.
Here she is with a green and white floral dress along with her daughter Masha, smiling and shining with the fragrance and energy of spring.

When you’re expecting; every parent hopes for a happy and healthy child. However, not everyone is as fortunate. Luckily there are organisations that provide support for children and their families if the unexpected occurs. Katie Fullerton talks about Funny Lumps, a support group for children with NF1.
support children with NF1 get funding as some of it goes into help for these children and their teachers in schools. Beth already has someone who liaises with her nursery staff as well as with her parents. This takes me to what we are doing. On the 27th of April I will join 24 other members of a team called Captain Boo’s Lions to walk 23 miles in the Glasgow Kiltwalk. The Kiltwalk supports various children’s charities in Scotland and if you enter a team of more than 20 you can nominate a charity and they receive 75% of your total raised. Our nominated charity is Funny Lumps.

NF1 can cause a vast variety of health issues for suffers. Initial symptoms that are often seen before a diagnosis is given are cafe au lait spots sometimes mistaken for birth marks and tumours that can grow anywhere on the body. And we’d give the same reply each time ‘we don’t mind so long as it’s healthy.’ So far so good our daughter seems to be healthy. Unfortunately not everyone is so lucky. About the same time as we had our baby, a very good friend was being told her beautiful baby girl’s health was forever more going to be in question.

It is impossible to tell if these things will be better or worse in the future for her and many others. Individuals with NF1 also have a 65% chance of having learning difficulties throughout their lives with varying severity. Often children will have problems with concentration in the classroom as well as difficulties with reading, writing and maths. They can also have trouble with coordination. Children with these complications can learn as well as anyone but they require alternative learning strategies in order to succeed at school. It is therefore vital that charities that

They liaise with parents and schools to raise awareness and ensure the kids get the best learning experience possible.

xpats - from Australia, Europe, North America and elsewhere - arrive in China expecting to see and experience not only a new culture, but also a new environment. For many, and in many ways, Qingdao fulfills these expectations: a beautiful coastline, mountains and widely contrasting seasons. Less visible, however, are the indigenous flora and fauna.
Many Qingdao expats live in gated communities where cultivated gardens include familiar flowers, plants and trees. Typically these are regularly - and liberally - treated with both insecticides and herbicides. One of the most commonly seen birds are black-billed magpies (Pica

pica), which even many non-Chinese can easily identify. So where are the unique animals and plants then?
life is tremendous, although I suspect that even here; at least some of it is non-native.
Soon after our arrival in Qingdao, my son Elijah and I hosted our first two couchsurfers in China: a middle-aged physician and her friend, an electrician, from Busan, South Korea. Outdoorsy and adventurous, they wanted to climb nearby Laoshan and invited us to join them. For those in Qingdao who haven’t explored this area, I would highly recommend it. Although perhaps not visibly teeming with animal life, hikers can see animals such as frogs, lizards, birds and plenty of exotic and, dare I say, beautiful - insects and spiders. And of course the plant
In the United States, I am lucky to have friends who are both bird lovers and exceptional photographers. Swapping photos with a friend in Oakland, California, she wanted to know about the bird life in Qingdao. Hmm, I thought. What can I impress her with? Well, I told her, there are swallows (small and fast birds) that I’ve seen, outside our windows on the 12th floor, teasing our cat Bella. After some research, we discovered they are Barn Swallows, the same species she has seen and photographed in California.
Qingdao is blessed with many things: great food, beautiful scenery and a surprising variety of indigenous plants and animals. Melissa Clifford takes us for a walk on the wild side.
This was not the first time I discovered species in Qingdao that I’ve seen in the U.S. Leaving our apartment, on the way to the airport to visit Cambodia, my son and I found a large green moth on the sidewalk, alive. I let - okay, encouraged - the moth to crawl onto my finger to better examine it. A Luna Moth (Actias luna). The only other time I’ve seen Luna Moths was in Vermont, in the northeastern United States. Another North American animal, familiar to many and common in northeastern China, is the red fox (Vulpes vulpes). These foxes are truly omnivorous, although they feed primarily on rodents. The red fox is native to parts of Asia, unlike the
Luna Moth. “Huli jing (is) a fox spirit in Chinese mythology known for usually causing mischief, seducing humans and finally killing them,” reports Wikipedia. Occasionally, wildlife arrives right in your backyard. Carrie and Peter Thorpe, who live in Laoshan, experienced just that when Carrie found an owl huddled on the ground outside their first-floor apartment. Not wanting a member of the local and abundant feral cat population to make a meal of the owl, Carrie took it in. Ms. Thorpe, was unsure about a number of things: Was it a pet owl that had escaped? Had it broken or injured a wing? What did it eat? Was it an adult (this was a very small owl)?

(I liked that my research on hedgehogs in China brought up no disparaging traditional beliefs, but I did learn of a Beijing-based, indie-rock band called Hedgehog!)
Without the benefit of a wildlife rehabilitation organisation, which are commonly found in the U.S. and Canada, the Thorpes had to improvise. They bought chicken meat and offered water to the owl, which they kept in a large plastic bin. Eventual force-feeding (earthworms, chicken) of the bird and time brought about the improvements necessary to release it into a wooded area. After researching on the internet, the Thorpes decided that the owl was, most likely, an Oriental Scops Owl (Otus sunia). Hari Qhuang of www.hariqhuang. wordpress.com reports that traditional Chinese beliefs about owls are that they are evil, will eat their mothers, and are an exceptionally bad omen if seen. Based on this, the Thorpe’s owl was probably not an escaped pet. Research about local birds on the internet turned up a few good sites, particularly thatsqingdao.com which features photos, descriptions and the

binomial names of birds that were spotted here in Qingdao: shrikes, egrets, herons, owls, kites, terns, kestrels and many others. (www. thatsqingdao.com/pdf/Birds-Qingdao.pdf) Peter Thorpe met one of the authors of this list, Brian Westland, who lives here in Qingdao. What else can be seen here in Qingdao? Well, the easiest are certainly the creepy-crawly varieties. My middle school students have become accustomed to me bringing them millipedes, butterflies, dragonflies, beetles, moths, caterpillars and even spiders. They even sometimes bring them to me! If alive, we try to return them safely to where they were found. Elijah is especially fond of spotting insects and other arthropods, which he is usually willing to carefully transport to our apartment for me to examine. Rachel Rust, a QISS high school science teacher, has an occasional visitor to her yard in Shilaoren: a
Another QISS teacher, Piers Matthews, reported seeing a yellow weasel in Qingdao, near Songling Road. Wikipedia confirmed that it was a - surprisingly named - Siberian weasel (Mustela sibirica), also known as a kolonok. These small (360 to 820 grams!) carnivores feed primarily on rodents, such as mice and voles. Unfortunately, Wikipedia reports that “ in Chinese folklore, the Siberian weasel is viewed as a wandering spirit (shen) that can steal and replace people's souls.” The subject of animals, plants, fungi, bacteria and their relationships is also one discussed in my classroom at QISS, and presumably at many other schools. We cover, in depth, the topic of ecosystem balance, keystone species and the necessity of having a variety of organisms to keep environments healthy. It’s nice to know that even in this very urban environment, we can still see nature, if we want to. Hopefully, Qingdao can both conserve and expand upon the biodiversity that it has, and update its views, if necessary, on animals such as weasels, foxes and owls.

Transition, a Bicycle & an Expat Friend
ticing avoidance is a great way to not learn about forgiveness. Affirming others- while it sounds much easier than reconciliation, affirmation often proves difficult. We assume others should already know how we feel and deliberately saying nice stuff can be awkward. True. But by putting it in words we clarify the truth and no one is left wondering. A good affirmation explains how someone has added value to our life.
Farewells- few people are excited by farewells full of hugs, tears, runny noses and heartfelt promises to meet again. More often than not most of us would prefer to skip these emotional exchanges. What’s that I hear you say, “Facebook means no more goodbyes?” While social media provides connection it is shallow compared to being in the same physical location. Social media has definitely not made a real farewell obsolete.
T
Having said this however, I haven’t always experienced transition as a smooth approachable thing that I want to touch. Actually quite the opposite. Dr. Nancy Schlossberg gives a thorough and academic definition of transition… I suggest ‘Googling’ it. But the basics of what she says is: when things around us change it affects us even if we want to admit it or not.
16
Thanks for the explanation, Nancy. For the purpose of this article we’ll take a slightly closer look at the transition that surrounds leaving somewhere.
to your close expat friend’s insensitive response you’re determined to take your bike. One bike, and one expat friend down, now just everything and everyone else to deal with.
When transition strikes I head to the task side of things; my wife to the relational side of things. Experience has taught me that transition is not about tasks or relationships, it’s about both tasks and relationships. In preparing to leave there are a crazy number of tasks and relationships that need to be considered. The four important ‘P’s’ are: people, pets, places or possessions (Dr David Pollock).
In my experiences with transitions the ‘must do’ model for leaving well is ‘RAFT’: Reconciliation, Affirmation, Farewell, Think ahead (Dr David Pollock). None of these must do's are easy to start and each one requires attention to tasks and relationships.
Your thoughts go to what will you take and what will you leave; and thanks
In my experiences with transitions the ‘must do’ model for leaving well is ‘RAFT’: Reconciliation, Affirmation, Farewell, Think ahead (Dr David Pollock).
Some of us that have lived in Qingdao for a while found a pattern about the expats here: they are coming and leaving. The pattern seems to be even more obvious with summer coming. Damian Tapley, the Head of Student Services at the ISQ with 12 years of experience living in this city, tells you all about transition.
ransition is a smooth sounding word. It has no hard sounding letters and has an almost onomatopoeic quality. It sounds sleek and comfortable, something you might want to touch, like the latest offering from Apple. Or maybe that’s just me?
Reconciliation- let’s face it, most of us see conflict as something to avoid. So what better way to avoid conflict than leave? Right? Insert answer: Wrong. The reality is a relationship stays broken until it is fixed, avoiding it is just that, avoidance; and prac-
Thinking ahead- getting ready for the future is important and requires us to develop realistic expectations, even when it’s unknown. I’ve come to believe the best way to respond to the unknown is by measuring how well we embrace it. Embracing something means drawing it towards us and owning it, not avoiding it or allowing anxious emotions to paralyze us.
Remember transition isn’t the smooth shiny concept it sounds like, and if you want to leave well then I suggest that you take care of your tasks and relationships in a careful and thorough way, try RAFT... and just give the bike to your expat friend.

E
czema is a common allergic and inflammatory skin disease that appears as a symmetrically distributed rash along with severe itching. It can involve repeated occurrences and easily evolve into a chronic disease. How is it caused? The onset of eczema is caused by a multitude of factors that interact with each other. These include emotional states namely depression, fatigue, anxiety, tension and insomnia and physical factors such as prolonged exposure to cold, wet or dry climates. How can we prevent it? First, develop healthy eating habits. Avoid inflammatory foods such as spicy food, seafood and red meat. However, if you don’t eat properly it will also cause a lose of important nutrition and worsen your condition. Second, a person who has allergies or has a family history of allergies should avoid external stimuli, such as hot scalding water and sunburn. To avoid increasing skin sensitivity to eczema, live and maintain a balanced lifestyle. Clothing should be
worn comfortably loose in order to reduce friction, and avoid fibers such as acrylic and wool from coming in direct contact with the skin.
The greater the strength (potency), the more effect it has on reducing inflammation, but the greater the risk of side-effects with continued use.
General treatment Patients should consider other environmental factors that may cause eczema such as their working environment and daily habits. Avoid outdoor factors like sunburn. Try not to wear lingerie products made of synthetic fibers. Avoid food that may increase sensitivity and exacerbate the disease such as seafood, peppers, wine and coffee. Keep the skin clean, prevent the skin from infection, avoid fatigue and keep an optimistic mood.
Vitamins There are a number of vitamins that may help with treating eczema. Vitamin D supplements, although controversial, are quickly becoming a more mainstream treatment as studies show that supplementing Vitamin D can help eczema and that more severe eczema is correlated with lower levels of Vitamin D. Safe and inexpensive, it seems a reasonable option for most patients.
Topical steroids (steroid creams and ointments) Topical steroids work by reducing inflammation in the skin. Topical steroids are grouped into four categories depending on their strength: mild, moderately potent, potent, and very potent. There are various brands and types in each category. For example, hydrocortisone cream 1% is a commonly used steroid cream and is classed as a mild topical steroid.
Topical Vitamin B12 has also been studied and has some compelling evidence that it too can be a beneficial treatment. However at the time of this article being written, there is no specific commercial product available and must be combined with other vitamins in order to be used which can be expensive.

How Mouth Breathing Affects Your Teeth
W
hen breathing with just the mouth, your lips might not close properly, leading to the buccal muscle and tongue losing its dynamic balance. In the long run, mouth breathing can cause a narrow jaw and crooked and protrusive teeth. The common reasons are adenoidal hypertrophy, tonsillar hypertrophy, or habitual mouth breathing caused by a blocked airway. If mouth breathing occurs because of hypertrophic organic tissue, then an operation will be needed. But with habitual mouth breathing, it can be corrected by an orthodontist. If you find your children are mouth breathing, don’t panic! Simply consult with a professional orthodontist. They can examine whether their jaws are narrowing or not. Then you might be referred to an otolaryngology doctor. However, Dr. Olive suggests, that if you go straight to an otolaryngology doctor, they may not give you a full diagnosis since there may not be any obvious inflammation, while an orthodontist focuses more on maxillofacial development which is influenced by imbalanced facial muscles due to mouth breathing.

Squats To truly target the areas that will be most affected by your pregnancy, you need squats. There are actually many variations of squats but if you just stick to the original, it will do wonders for your thighs and backside. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and then squat down, as though you are about to sit in a chair. Stand back up and squeeze your buttocks as you come up. You may also try keeping your legs together for the squat, or putting them further apart with your knees pointed out to the sides to work the innermost muscles of your thighs. If you feel balance is an issue, keep a chair nearby and hold onto it to steady yourself.
The Stomach Vacuum This is a great exercise to keep your abs strong. Plus, you can perform it many different ways - on your hands and knees, sitting or standing. To do the vacuum and strengthen the deepest layer of abdominal muscles, inhale and tighten your stomach by pulling your belly button in toward your spine. Then exhale so your stomach expands out.

Pushups are a full-body exercise that works everything from your chest to your arms to your core. They have been a workout staple for ages because they truly work. If the regular pushup is too hard for you, modify it so you are on your knees instead. Not comfortable on your knees? You can use any wall in your home to do a wall pushup too. Try for 3 sets of 12 reps.

Additionally, doing a regular squat and modifying it to go deeper by dropping your rear end all the way past your knees so it almost touches the ground is even better than doing kegel exercises.
What’s great about these exercises is that you can do them quickly, while you wait for your electric kettle to heat up or while dinner’s in the oven. Add a walk around the neighborhood a couple times a week and you’ll be one hot mum! Breathe normally as you maintain the pulled-in abdominals for two seconds. Release and then repeat 10 to 20 times.

Tai Gu Cai Chinese Flat Cabbage or Rosette Bok Choi One of my favorite dark leafy greens. It is very versatile and can be added raw to sandwiches and salads like a milder version of mustard greens. Tai gu cai can replace spinach in Tomato Florentine soup (then no longer Florentine), but in general we normally just sauté it with a little olive oil, garlic, and finish it off with a squeeze of lemon juice. Choose tightly packed dark green leaves that are unblemished and unbroken. The underneath stems are naturally lighter in color. Preparation: Rinse to remove any dirt, cut off and discard the bottom part of the stalk and separate the leaves. Tomato Soup with Tai Gu Cai Ingredients • Splash of extra virgin olive oil for sautéing • 2 ribs of celery, roughly chopped (about ¼ cup/60g)
28
• ½ purple onion, diced (approximately ¾ cup/180 g) • 6 cloves of garlic, roughly chopped (little less than ¼ cup/60g) • 11 cups chopped tomatoes (approximately 8 medium tomatoes) • Couple drops of hot sauce (to your taste, my family doesn’t like spicy so I only put 6-7 drops) • 1 Tablespoon/15 ml red wine or balsamic vinegar • 2 Tablespoons/30 ml ketchup • 1 heaped Tablespoon/15 ml dried basil • ¼ cup/60g grated Parmesan cheese • 4 cups (firmly packed) tai gu cai Directions 1. Put a splash of extra virgin olive oil into a large pot, add onion and sauté until translucent. 2. Add celery and garlic, continue cooking until the garlic begins to become fragrant. 3. Add tomatoes and a little salt and black pepper. Allow the tomatoes to reduce down a while and release some of their juice, approximately 5 minutes.
4. Add the hot sauce, red wine vinegar, ketchup and basil 5. Stir thoroughly and allow to simmer for at least five minutes to let the flavours to come together. 6. Place soup in a blender and puree or use an hand blender and puree directly in the pot. CAUTION: In general it isn’t recommended to put hot liquids into a blender, but I always just hold a kitchen towel over top of the lid while I’m blending. I also pull out the insert that is in the lid to release any steam before opening the entire lid. 7. Pour soup into a large serving bowl, add parmesan cheese and stir thoroughly. 8. Taste and make adjustments to seasonings per your family’s taste preferences. 9. Add tai gu cai and stir NOTES: If you don’t have a blender, just chop the celery, onion, garlic, and tomatoes into smaller pieces and skip the blender part.
Lotus Root Lotus root seems like just another white starchy vegetable from the outside, but after it is peeled and cut into slices, it looks like a beautiful white flower or lace. Sliced, it can be served raw on a veggie tray with dip, as well as added to salads. It is also a good choice for stir fries because it retains its crunch. My favorite way to eat it at home is Sweet and Sour Lotus Root or Tang Cu Ou Pian.
Directions 1. Fill a pan half full of water and bring it to a boil, add the lotus root and cook until it becomes transparent or the water begins to boil again. 2. Drain water and put the lotus root into a bowl, layering it with the minced ginger and sugar. 3. Add vinegar and then stir to combine all the ingredients
Choose one that is firm, still has both ends and seems plump with no blemishes (the skin naturally has small reddish brown specks) Preparation: Cut off the ends and peel

Tofu Skin Tofu skin is actually not really tofu, but the byproduct of making tofu, specifically it is the skin that forms when boiling soybean milk. It has a nice firm, noodle like texture with an almost nutty flavor. In particular I use it to replace the noodles in lasagna. My family also has a curried “noodle” recipe that we like. Choose the thicker option of sheets that seem uniform in color, usually a light to medium yellowish-tan, with no dry edges. It shouldn’t be more than 6 or 7 RMB for 3-4 sheets at most markets. Preparation: Cut into the size you need for your recipe with a knife or a pizza cutter. For the curried “noodles” I cut it into 3 inch wide strips, stack the strips and then cut into smaller noodles about the width of your little finger. Curried “Noodles” Ingredients • One sheet of tofu skin, cut into 3 inch strips

• 1 purple onion, diced • 4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped or minced • ½ cup water or broth • 1 carrot, diced • 2 ribs of celery, diced (about ¼ cup/60g) • 1 tablespoon/15 ml curry powder • ½ teaspoon/2.5 ml ground cumin • small bunch fresh cilantro, finely chopped Directions 1. In a pan over medium heat, sauté the onion in a little extra virgin olive oil or butter, until translucent 2. Add garlic and cook until garlic becomes fragrant 3. Add carrot and celery, cook for about half a minute 4. Add broth or water and cook until vegetables begin to soften 5. Add tofu skin, curry powder and cumin and continue to cook until broth is gone 6. Transfer to a plate or bowl and garnish with fresh cilantro
Mushrooms
I most frequently use a mixture of several mushrooms. I enjoy them in omelets, on pizza, sautéed with some onion in butter and topped with a little parmesan cheese, stuffed, etc. For the recipe below I used shitake (Lentinula edodes 香 菇 xiang gu), white button (Agaricus bisporus 双胞菇 shuang bao gu), oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus 平菇 ping gu), and white clamshell mushrooms (Hypsizygus tessallatus II. Bunapi-shimeiji). My other favourite is French Horn (Pleurotus eryngii 杏鲍 菇 xing bao gu), which due to its firm, meaty texture is a great replacement for meat. Choose clean, firm, and unblemished mushrooms.
Preparation: Clean quickly under running water, don’t soak them. (Dried mushrooms should be soaked in warm water for a few minutes) I usually cut off the very tip of the stem or for varieties that are clumped together like the oyster mushroom, the tip of the stump. Mixed Mushroom Soup Ingredients • 1 medium purple onion, diced (1 cup/227 g) • 1 carrot, diced (1 cup/227 g) • 3 medium potatoes, diced (3 cups/681g) • 2 ribs of celery, diced (about ¼ cup/60g) • 1 head garlic, finely chopped 1 pound (1斤 jin) mixed mushrooms sliced or chopped, depending on the type • 6 cups chicken or vegetable stock • 1 Tablespoon/15 ml tarragon • ½ teaspoon/2.5 ml ground black pepper • ¼ teaspoon salt Directions 1. In a large pot, over medium heat pour a little extra virgin olive oil or butter and sauté onions until translucent. 2. Add garlic and cook until it begins to become fragrant.
3. Add carrots and one cup of chicken stock, cook for a few minutes 4. Add potatoes, salt, and pepper, continue to cook for a few minutes, until potatoes begin to soften 5. Add ½ the mushrooms and 3 cups chicken stock (in this case I added the shitake and white button mushrooms first because they are firmer than the other two varieties) 6. Bring to boil and add the other mushrooms, tarragon and the rest of the chicken stock, simmer for 5 minutes. Nutrition varies with the type, but mushrooms in general are low calorie and a source of significant amounts of selenium, riboflavin, niacin, potassium, and pantothenic acid. They are also one of the rare natural food sources for Vitamin D.

Smoothing the Transition
There are many things to consider and plan for when your child moves from kindergarten to primary school. Yunwu Zang, Principal of the Guokai International Department, gives some suggestions to help you and your child prepare and smooth the transition.
A
t some point in your child’s life, they will finish kindergarten and take the next step of attending primary school. The kids are excited while you are busy preparing for another step in their education.

• So as a parent, what do you need to do? First of all, you should choose the best primary school for them and then help them physically and mentally prepare for their new environment. While choosing a suitable school is an important topic, I won’t be covering it in this article.
School Supplies to Prepare • A thermos flask to help them get into the habit of drinking

enough water every day. A reasonable sized school bag to accommodate the various text books they will acquire. A simple pencil case; avoid buying a fancy one as it may distract your child in class. A moderate amount of stationary. Trainers and a spare set of clothes. Some schools will provide an individual locker for each student in which to store their belongings.
Skills and Habits The skills I mention here are mainly about personal care and good habits. Good habits for your child to develop include: tidying their back pack and putting their things away, eating by themselves, dressing themselves, attending class punctually, getting
out of the habit of lunchtime snoozes and finishing school assignments on time. Besides that, they need to be well behaved, remember traffic rules, and be aware of personal safety.
Also, children need to understand teamwork. They have to not only learn how to finish tasks by cooperating with their classmates, but also how to get along with them.
Mental preparation To start with, children need to feel happy and self-confident before starting this new chapter in their lives. Parents should give their child the opportunity to visit and familiarize themselves with their new school, which will lead to them feeling more comfortable when they start classes there.
Finally and most importantly, they have to learn to communicate. Unlike kindergarten, the teachers in Primary school value children who can express themselves and their opinions clearly and confidently.
Secondly, children should learn self-discipline and follow instructions given by their teachers, more importantly they have to learn to be persistent in finishing homework assignments.
Learning Methods Get them to practice paying attention for more than ten minutes. Encourage them to be a good listener and express opinions, develop an interest in reading and critical thinking as well as creativity and task-oriented activities.
Parents should give their child the opportunity to visit and familiarize themselves with their new school, which will lead to them feeling more comfortable when they start classes there.

Jennifer Raskin shares her experiences in learning to cope with Chinese in-laws.
W
hen I met and fell in love with my husband, I didn’t think about the details. I loved him and he loved me. What more could we ask for? We got pregnant while living in Seoul. And that’s when our differing cultures began to matter, because he’s Chinese and I’m American. We decided to move to China because he’d said his parents could help us with the baby. I agreed before I knew completely what I was getting into. But despite this, I have never once regretted marrying my husband, or having our precious daughter. His parents are incredibly kind and generous. However, it’s been hard trying to adjust to the differences between us. It’s amazing how wide the cultural and generational gap between us is. Now that my daughter is turning three and just before

my second child is born, my in-laws and I have come to more of an understanding of each other, though early on, there were many battles. I learned to pick which ones were worth fighting for and to try to accept some of their culture. And in turn, they have tried to adjust to what my husband and I want for our daughter, accepting some of my American culture and even embracing it. One of my first battles was about food. I breastfed my daughter, and my mother-in-law surprised me by being completely on board with this. But soon, as with all babies, mine got bigger and was ready for actual food. My daughter is very independent. She likes to do things for herself. So once she got a handle on her utensils, that was it. She didn’t want anybody to help her eat but do it herself. My husband and I watched in absolute glee. Yet my in-laws didn’t think she was eating enough. When they would come over, they would
sit by her and shovel food into her mouth. In my culture, once your child is old enough to feed herself, you let her eat. I finally let go of this particular gripe, partly to keep the peace and partly because it resolved itself. Now when my in-laws eat with us, they’ll let her eat some food by herself while they attempt to feed her some as well. This works out great because my daughter will tell them when she wants to eat the food all by herself. But I refuse to drop the argument regarding discipline. My husband and I are in total agreement about how we should handle our daughter when she’s not behaving. His parents, however, are afraid to punish her when she acts out or wants something she shouldn’t have. When we warn our daughter that we will take something away if she doesn’t comply, we do as we say. My in-laws are the opposite. I know they only want to make her

But sometimes their fear of depriving her of something gets in the way and only serves to make her behavior worse. Despite that I personally find it strange that most Chinese people will let their own parents (the grandparents) raise their children, I do think it’s great that children in these families get to know their grandparents and spend time with them. It seems to cultivate a sense of respect for the elders, but in a different way than I’m used to seeing in my home country. It’s amazing how many things are so different between our cultures. We still disagree on many things, from how to dress Raelynn to what I should or shouldn’t eat while I’m pregnant with my second child. But what’s equally as impressive, is watching what happens when two cultures are forced to blend. It’s not always pretty but somehow we manage to make it work for the sake of this incredible little child, who has a hold on all of our hearts.

very family’s situation is different, and the choice should be made based on what is best for the family. The mother and father must both be comfortable with their decision, and many factors ranging from finances to work situations to individual personality must be considered. Last issue, we highlighted havingababyinchina. com as a resource to find hospital listings, read real testimonies, and ask questions and have them answered. This time, we’ve gathered pros and cons for the four common birthing options chosen by Qingdao expats as well as testimonies from people who’ve lived them.

PARENTING Working Directly With a Local Hospital Pros • Least expensive (4,00020,000 yuan). • No intermediary. Mother can communicate directly with the nurses and doctors (assuming adequate Chinese language ability). • Mother can choose a hospital convenient to her home and a doctor she prefers. Cons • Requires a high level of Chinese language ability without which appointments and birth experience can be confusing. • Most hospitals will not accept insurance, requiring the mother to pre-pay and be reimbursed by insurance at a later date. • Although birth plans and preferences can be discussed (language ability allowing), the doctor is in charge of

nearly all decisions. Privacy is minimal. Appointments are often crowded. Chinese law does not allow baby’s gender to be known before birth. ·Special permission has to be obtained to allow the father in the delivery room. Not allowed for C-section.
Having a baby in China is both rewarding and challenging. For us, praying without ceasing, and surrounding ourselves with friends, family and other parents, kept us sane throughout this journey. ——Elisabeth
Traveling to Your Home Country • Pros • Familiar language and cultural customs. • Direct Billing available depending on your country and insurance situation. • Availability of birthing and nursing education and support. • Close proximity of supportive family and friends. • Understanding of cultural preferences and birthing styles. • Depending on country, may qualify for government subsidies and advanced medical technology. Cons • Depending on the country, cost of medical facilities may be high. • Due to the flexibility of a “due date”, most doctors want the mother to be located in hospital’s city at least 3-4 weeks before their due date. Finding housing for this time adds an additional cost and inconvenience. • Plane travel adds additional time restrictions and cost. Most airlines will not allow a pregnant mom to travel after a certain
•
date. Check individual airlines for specific requirements. Husband may not have enough paternity leave to travel with the Mother. Need additional time to secure passport and visa before returning to China.
I delivered my second child in my ‘home’ country after having delivered my first in Qingdao. The decision had nothing to do with my experience here, which was positive, but purely to do with timing. My husband had to be in America over the due date, and so we decided to all go. We also were able to do so because we had family we could stay with and a doctor willing to take me. Overall, I had a very similar birth experience in both countries, but I do have to say, I loved understanding everything and being able to freely communicate. I also enjoyed the fact that my post-delivery meals did not include sea cucumber. It was a hassle to come back to China, and it involved having to fly with my son at two weeks to get to a city with an embassy, and then the long flight back to China a week later. ——Amy

I went to Beijing United for the birth of all three of my kids. Basically, I chose Beijing United because I wanted a place where I could communicate well in English. Additionally, I felt comfortable at Beijing United with their ability and approach to respond to any potential complications. Finally, the insurance company covers the cost for Beijing United, so we were happy to enjoy the high level of care at Beijing United. –Cindy Post

Traveling to a Tier 1 city such as Beijing or Shanghai Pros • English speaking nurses and doctors. • 5 star treatment, including western style room, free latte hour, wide range of dinner options, complimentary candlelight dinner and pedicure. • Direct billing available for some insurance companies. • Supportive of Mother’s specific Birth Plan. • Equipped with wide range of emergency equipment and facilities. • Husband and Baby can “room in”. • Western philosophy of medicine,

style circumcision available by appointment. Close proximity to most Embassies for Passport and Visa Issuance.
Cons • Higher cost than local hospitals (50,000 – 70,000 yuan). • Need to travel away from home and supportive friends. • Due to the flexibility of a “due date”, most doctors want the mother to be located in hospital’s city at least 3-4 weeks before their due date. Finding housing for this time adds an additional cost and inconvenience. • Husband may not have enough paternity leave to travel with Mother.
Pros • English translators available (additional languages may be available). • Direct billing available for some insurance companies. • The translator also acts as a cultural liaison assisting in payments, appointment setup, and birth certificate acquisition. • Clinic often provides transportation to and from the clinic or hospital. • Birth plans and preferences can be discussed, such as skin-onskin contact after birth. • Husband is usually allowed in the room for natural delivery and occasionally for C-sections depending on the situation. Cons • More expensive than working directly with a local hospital (20,000-60,000 yuan). • Although birth plans and preferences can be discussed, Chinese culture places the doctor in charge of most decisions. • All communication is passed through the translator, which might lead to unnecessary fear when a translator neglects to translate during a complication.
•
•
Chinese medical practices may be vastly different from the Mother’s preferences, including insufficient pain medication following C-section. Although a translator is provided through appointments and birth, post-birth leaves you with several days at the hospital with limited translation.
We decided to have our boys in Qingdao firstly because we didn't want to have the complication of travelling to another city to have our babies, especially with their two year old big sister tagging along. We later found out our insurance company would only cover our having them in Qingdao. We chose to use Bellaire because they spoke English, and Woman and Infants for the birth because it had the best reputation amongst the expat community. We have mixed feeling about our experience having twins here. ——Anna

Confucius and his descendants have been buried here for the past 2000 years and continue to be buried here today.
A Shandong Road Trip
As spring comes closer, it’s time to get out for some fun family field trips. See what Carrie Quinn-Thorpe has to recommend.
I
t was the winter of 2011. I was 7 1/2 months pregnant with our second child and the two-week Chinese New Year break was looming. What to do? Feeling very pregnant and bearing in mind we also had a very active two year old to cater to we began to throw around ideas; Fly somewhere tropical and laze in the sun and sand? Tempting, but too risky. Fly somewhere locally? Too expensive. Staycation? Nah, not really our thing. So we decided to do what families have been doing since the beginning of time and take a ROAD TRIP! Our adventure began on the morning of January 31 when we packed up our car with suitcases, a wide selection of children’s CDs and what seemed like a lifetime supply of snacks, both for the two year old and the heavily pregnant mama Our first stop was Qufu, the home of Confucius. I must admit that although I had heard of Confucius I really didn’t know much about him. Who was he? Why was he so import-

ant in Chinese history? Well, what better time to read up on it than on a four hour car ride to his hometown, all the while singing “The Wheels on the Bus” and “If You’re Happy And You Know It” over and over and over again. Thanks to the help of our trusty GPS we arrived without problem a few hours later at the Queli hotel in Qufu. This hotel was clean, reasonably priced (double rooms from 350元 with breakfast), very conveniently located within the walls of the old town and walking distance to many of the main sites. I would recommend it. We spent the remainder of that day settling into the hotel and getting our bearings wandering around the old town. The next morning we set out to get our Confucius on. Our first sites to explore were the Confucius Temple and Mansions. The Confucius Temple is the largest imperial building complex after the Forbidden City and it didn’t disappoint. Chock-a-block full of beautiful temples and halls it was exactly the traditional Chinese archi-
tecture we were disappointed not to see in Qingdao. Once we had had our fill of temples and halls we ventured over to the Confucius Mansions directly next door. From the Han to the Qing dynasties the Kong family were ennobled and lived like kings, and this maze of buildings and halls attests to it. Both of these sights were well worth seeing and are an easy and enjoyable outing for a family. The following day we headed a few kilometers north of town to the Confucius Forest, the largest artificial park and best preserved cemetery in China. Confucius and his descendants have been buried here for the past 2000 years and continue to be buried here today. This area covers over 200 hectares so we quickly realized we’d need to hop on one of the mini busses inside to park to see much of anything. It is a beautifully treed, grassy park dotted with statues, temples and pavilions. The “must see” being the tomb of Confucius himself, a simple monument which is protected by impressive
stone panthers, griffins and two larger than life guardians. That afternoon we headed back into the old walled town to wander the maze of alleyways and enjoy the local markets, which in themselves make a trip to Qufu worthwhile. The next morning we said goodbye to Qufu and made our way towards the city of Tai’an. After a leisurely drive through the Shandong countryside we arrived at our next destination, the Taishan International Hotel in Tai’an. A non-descript business hotel, it was anything but international. It was clean and affordable enough, with doubles from 300元 including breakfast, but overall the hotel was nothing special nor superbly located. As such, although our stay here was fine, I do not feel the need to recommend it. After getting settled we headed into town and along the way happened upon a lovely little park, colorfully lit up as night fell. It had a small lake and a nice walking path up to a pagoda at the top of a hill; a nice family outing when in Tai’an.

LISTINGS
TRAVEL The next day we drove off to find Tai Shan, one of the most important sacred mountains in China. We put faith in our GPS and found our way, unbeknownst to us at the time, at the entrance at the backside of the mountain. In retrospect this was a good thing as it was significantly less busy than the more commonly used front side. As much as we wanted to hike all 6000 plus steps, being very pregnant with a two year old in tow, we opted for the more sensible, albeit far less adventurous cable car. The views from the mountain are breathtaking and the temples and shrines exude an aura of holiness, which makes the entire experience feel sacred and serene, even amongst the throngs of Chinese New Year visitors.
As much as we wanted to hike all 6000 plus steps, being very pregnant with a two year old in tow, we opted for the more sensible, albeit far less adventurous cable car.
The next morning we decided to stop in at the Dai Temple located in the center of Tai’an. We weren’t expecting anything but special but ended up spending quite a few hours just wandering around this interesting, well laid out, nicely kept temple complex. Worth a visit if you find yourself in Tai’an. After 5 nights away it was now time for us to start heading back in the direction of home. On the way we stopped in at the ancient stone village of Zhujiayu, one of Shandong’s oldest intact hamlets. Wandering down the dusty, old cobbled lanes between the ancient stone buildings truly felt like a step back in time. Many of the buildings contain small and interesting exhibitions about the village, and it is certainly worth a stop if you find yourself in the area.
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our first ever Chinese road trip. If you don’t have a car to drive yourself Qufu and Tai’An are both easily accessible by train and I would highly recommend visiting both of these places that are practically in our backyard.
