Few could have imagined what a tumultuous year it would be, from the devastation of cities and villages in Sichuan province to the collapse of international markets, from the multitude of roadblocks that China faced before the Olympics to the extraordinary impact of that event on hearts and minds around the world. Qingdao's quick, massive response to a freakish algae bloom in July was a great example of an obstacle overcome through hard work. By contrast, the initial cover-up of the melamine scandal allowed the problem to spread around the world, further damaging the reputation of Chinese exports abroad.

The Year of the Brown Cow

A wiser man than myself once said - the tea leaves don't tell you as much when you've finished the cup, but at least you know what they taste like. The Year of the Rat presented awesome obstacles and tectonic shifts, opportunities to learn and grow... and here we are again.

Astrologers relate the brown earthiness of this zodiac cycle's Cow to stability underfoot; some look forward to a resolution in global real estate markets, and others wonder what portends for territorial disputes between and within countries. Turning to the Cows in our lives: they are best known for their ability to 'eat grass and make milk', patiently turning a less-than-ideal situation into something that is workable (if not wonderful). They don't speak much, but when they do it is forcefully and eloquently. Cows strive to provide a stable home for their families, and can come across as methodical at the expense of recognisable passion. They are wary of new fashions and trends, a quality which their friends appreciate but which can come across as stubbornness.

They're relaxed when they feel secure, but sometimes feel the need to take on the world's problems. Sometimes this compulsion joins with their methodical nature to put them in positions where they have power to make change. Margaret Thatcher is a Cow, as was Princess Diana. Jiaozhou clean-up China will pump $105.8m (including a $45m loan from the Asian Development Bank) into a massive clean-up operation around Jiaozhou Bay, the 350km² body of water enclosed by Qingdao and Huangdao peninsulas. Jiaozhou Bay is the sought-after natural harbour that caused European nations to covet Qingdao at the start of the last century, and the reason why Qingdao has recently entered the top ten most important port cities worldwide. It is also an important marine ecosystem, a breeding ground for many fish and a stopover point for migrating birds. The money will be levered into organisations that focus on improving sewer systems and upgrading flood management and drainage facilities. Jiaozhou Bay's wetlands have diminished by around 30% since the 1950s, as a result of increased population and economic success, and contamination as a result of waste dumping is considered a "Serious public health hazard" according to the ADB. Residents in 10 provinces can now purchase certain white goods and communications equipment with a 13% subsidy, a move the Ministry of Finance hopes will spur domestic demand, as well as spreading the benefits of increased communication and knowledge that technology allows. This will include Shandong Province, which was among the four provinces to receive the subsidies when they were first enacted in December 2007.

Tesco to open in Qingdao The world's third largest retailer of produce and home supplies announced its plans for a superstore in Shandong's sailing capital, to open in 2010. Doug Cochrane, VP of Operation Management at Tesco China, made the announcement at the Shandong Investment Fair in Jinan last month. The superstore will be situated in Sifang district, north of the CBD, and occupy an area of 100,000m². Tesco is investing around RMB500 million in this store, which will also feature entertainment venues and restaurants. The multinational, which in 2007 declared its intention of opening 10 stores a year in China, is predicted to take Carrefour's second-place spot by 2012, as a result of a massive expansion into India and China. A Qingdao store is long overdue, considering Tesco's other operations in China and greater Asia. Korea is its biggest market outside of the UK, and stores exist all over provinces such as Guangdong, Fujian and Liaoning. One store in Dandong was the focus of a recent Telegraph article, by Sylvie Arnaud, identifying it as a regular stop for border-crossing North Koreans, who return to sell the produce on the black market. Extra retail - Lotte Mart The South Korean supermarket have signed a contract with Yantai Xinqiao Group to construct a $30m store in Yantai. The company plans to open its first Qingdao store in March 2009.

Technology subsidies The government recently expanded a subsidy system that offers discounts to rural residents and farmers purchasing electronic equipment. The campaign aims to sell 480m units including TV sets, refrigerators, washing machines, computers and mobile phones, worth a total of 920b元 by November 2012.

Taiwan and the mainland increase links December 15 was a big day in crossstrait relationships. Evergreen Marine's container ship, Uni-Adroit, traversed the first direct route between the ideologically-segregated territories in 59 years, heralding the beginning of potentially limitless trading possibilities.

Rock n' roll in China Qingdao-based libertines and video documentarians In Deep Films have just released their exploration of Beijing's seedy rock n' roll underbelly, a straight-toyoutube release that'll have you clamouring for the tissues and sick bags in equal measure. The short film traces the journey of England's Playmaker and Qingdao's The Dama Llamas as they cross paths in Dos Kolegas, a riotous, dishevelled bar and incubator of the capital's vibrant punk scene,

before returning to Qingdao with eight more bands in tow for annual music and arts extravaganza, MAX 08. The movie includes interviews with Pierra A Blanc, manager of Yu Gong Yi Shan, Beijing's premier alternative music venue, and Matt Kagler, founder of Tag Team Records, who do their level best under considerable inebriation to express what it is that will make Beijing one of the world's alternative music hotspots in the coming years. The vessel departed from Kaohsiung and arrived at Tianjin New Port soon after, before sailing on to Dalian and Qingdao. Uni-Adroit is one of at least five other vessels that have begun making the historic passage. Previously, trade between Taiwan and the mainland was required to pass through the tiny port of Ishigaki, Japan. In addition between 15 December and 28 March, Air China will be offering four additional direct flights from the cities of Tianjin, Hangzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing. Talks ending on November 4 between officials Chen Yunlin (China) and Chiang Pinkung (Taiwan) declared that eventually, 21 mainland cities would offer direct flights to Taiwan, from 5 at the time of deliberation. Other topics discussed included cooperation on food safety issues and increasing postal links.

Miss Asia 2008 Miss Asia 2008 went to Eunis Yao 姚佳雯, a 23-year old masters student from Hong Kong. The simply stunning sexbomb is a veteran of the beauty pageant scene and took not only the top prize, but also won Perfect Figure 2008, and adorned in nothing but the skimpiest bikini had (at least) half the audience hot under the collar. First runner-up went to Belinda Yan 颜子菲 - who also took Ms. Photogenic 2008 - and third place went to 19-year old Taiwanese temptress Lene Lai 赖琳恩. Eunis took 137,610 votes to Belinda's 129,416 in this, the first time Ms. Asia was decided by popular vote. Enough talk, now look at the photographs!

The sudden improvement in business relationships between the two territories is due to the deteriorating Taiwanese economy and the election of a new President, Ma Yingjeou. Historically reliant on trade with the US, Taiwan's economy has been slipping continuously, and the recent financial meltdown is viewed as the final nail in the coffin. Ma, unlike his predecessor Chen Shuibian, is progressive, and views improved relations with the big neighbour to the west as fundamental to the financial and military security of both entities.

The creator of music scenes in Zhuhai and Shanghai

Live Bar - one of China's best live music assets was started the best part of a decade ago, in an environment that isn't known for generating a culture of creative, independent musicians. Lao Sun is the bar chain’s enigmatic and imaginative founder which has proved hugely successful in bringing China’s vibrant underground to thousands of appreciative ears in the south China cities of Shanghai and Zhuhai. REDSTAR caught up with him in Qingdao to talk about his hopes, passions and brushes with the authorities...

Getting To Know You Who are you? Lao Sun, 37 years old, former drummer and founder of Xian Chang Ba, aka Live Bar. I lived in Zhuhai for more than 10 years. Why? Because it’s a very beautiful place. Zhuhai for business? Not so much, mostly because of the clean environment, it almost looks like another country. From? Jiangsu. Music in Zhuhai? A little, but the best thing about the bar is that it allows China’s best bands to come through on tour, and give the scene there a bit of a boost.

in comparison to recordings, you feel live music so much more Where are you right now? Right now I’m living in Qingdao with my girlfriend. Do you plan to start a Live Bar in Qingdao? I’d love to, though money is an issue. Hopefully, if I can find a place.

In Perspective When you first arrived in Zhuhai what did you do? First of all I was playing covers in a band in a hotel in Zhuhai. After six years, I’d saved up enough money to open the first live bar. It was situated under a hotel which was also a government building. That live bar didn’t last too long, they shut it down within two years because of all the strange-looking people coming in. By 2003 I was going to Shanghai regularly. I noticed that everybody was running around in pursuit of money, and figured that I could create another Live Bar that might, at least in part, bring some of China’s best young bands to the city, giving people a diversion from their rat races!

Why start these bars? Well, like I said, I think there was a need for it in Shanghai. And of course, my passion for music. But mostly, it’s for the young bands in China. Giving them a place to perform is my most overarching desire, because this is as important as having the bands in the first place - If there’s nowhere for them to play, there won’t be any music scene. What’s the goal of your bars? I want to build a brand of performance bars across China, at least that is my long-term goal, but realistically I just hope we can stay open! It’s tough business right now. I emphasise the word ‘live’, because I think that’s important in China. Other countries have huge networks of touring musicians and venues that work together to bring the music to an appreciative audience. And in comparison to recordings, you feel live music so much more. What would you like to bring to the audience? I just want to give the audience what they need and what they want. To make people feel relaxed and excited through the music. Lots of our audience are newcomers to live music, and I want them to feel electrified by the atmosphere.

Our equipment is not generally as sophisticated as say, Mao Livehouse in Beijing, but I’m going for a grittier, more downplayed live music experience.

The Scene How has China’s music scene evolved recently? During the last 2-3 years, the bands and music have developed a lot. Every city has a handful of bands, but now they are able to communicate better, there are more good venues making it easier for bands to go on tour. Can you mention some of those other bars? In Shanghai there’s Yu Yin Tang, which was started by a group of guys who were inspired by the rapturous response to a Suede gig in Shanghai in 2004. They started earning money by organising gigs for other bands. Wuhan has VOX and there’s Little Bar in Chengdu. All have great sound systems, and they get some good bands going through. In some cases though, they are not only bars. They often arrange and promote concerts, especially Little Bar in Chengdu, who almost play the role of a record label or tour organiser. Of course, it would be amazing if every city had a bar like Live Bar, so the network of musicians and bands in China could grow and reach a larger audience.

One of the major problems with this type of music in China is that there is very little market for independent music - and no support either, which is why such a vibrant scene is getting to such a small audience. Are there any solutions to this? That’s right, our main media in China doesn’t help this kind of music, they only try to publicise mass culture. The best way to let people know about what’s going on is through the media, but that’s locked up promoting rubbish. I hope someone can change what the media is offering. Also, live music, live bars, performances and venues can only influence a little at a time. They can only offer music to the people who are actually there, and maybe through word of mouth, the audiences will grow a little bit. We need advertising and people to be open minded and curious to bring this scene to a wider audience. The internet though, is providing such a great resource for getting the word out in China, not just for music but also so many other forms of art and entertainment that the mainstream media will not mention. And of course, having these venues does create a sense of community among the fans and musicians. The venues are almost as important as the bands that are playing there.

PB33 Disco Boys & Girls Night Out Who's wearing the green hat 谁穿绿帽子? 绿帽子 lv maozi - Green Hat - sl. item of clothing said to be worn by a man after his wife has cheated on him.

MAX 08 came alive last year when this sexed-up troupe of twenty-something shuai ge tore up the stage. I remember first of all Ge Rui's drumming; so accurate, captivating the crowd. Frontman and writer Liu Ao gripped the microphone between bursts of explosive, distorted guitar all the while backed up by line upon line of synth melody this was raw, vitriolic powerpunk, something I didn't know existed in China then, in my third month. I guess I've become some kind of groupie since then, catching them in venues all over Beijing, at every possible opportunity. They've just stepped out of the studio after 4 months of recording, and their EP Disco Boys & Girls Night Out sums them up perfectly. Laced with sordid reference to torrid teenage tribulation, the electro-punk opus is creatively crafted, as one would expect from a quartet that cut their stripes at China's Recording Art College, Communication Uni. Opening with an eerie

techno number, lackadaisically entitled intro, and focussing on perfect parties with drunken girls, we go through bie bang wo 别帮我 - a sharp word in the ear of over-possessive girlfriends before track 3, kan hao ni de niu 看好你的妞 roughly translated, 'Your girl looks good,' a track about the glint in the eye of the guy on stage, "You're nodding together with me, that guy besides you looks really unhappy," sings Liu. The sexy and sinful electro punk keeps on going, but there are moments of sensitivity; the TV machine dianshi ji 电视机 is an upbeat song with wretched lyrics of entrapment, boredom and alienation. The album goes out with a bang; Green Hat lv maozi 绿帽子, a rapturous libretto about PB33's (and their fans') rife infidelity. This is not your typically timid Chinese popcraft, it's an altogether more sordid and debauched affair. Qingdao's Record Metal Haul December 13, and Qingdao's own rock n' roll scene reared a devil-horned head and put fingers 1 and 4 in the air at REDSTAR Live, Battle Of The Bands. In a record attendance, grindcore Disintegration, Evanescence-esque Black and Victorious War were among 10 acts that shook C100 to its concrete core. Living and Dieting You really can have it all

Another new year, another shot at reducing that pesky waistline and living healthier. But between the end of the Western holiday season and the beginning of China's festivities, January is a particularly tricky month for establishing a sensible lifestyle that will sustain itself into Spring. In any case, looking forward to great meals and warm, festive evenings can help avoid seasonal blues. No reason to deprive yourself - we at REDSTAR believe that health and happiness go hand in hand, and wish you the very best of both in 2009!

Dining Eating is probably at the top of people's minds when thinking about weight loss. Sadly, it's also among life's greatest pleasures, especially with Qingdao's great confluence of Asian and global cuisines, fresh seafood and produce, and the like. Many diets run off the rails when the dieter abandons his commitment to eat soup for dinner, or finds her tastes being scrutinised at a supplier lunch. Relax! There's still hope. Avoid battered meats. Compare, for a moment, a fine plate of tang cu liji (sweet and sour pork) with a perhaps equally-delightful gong bao ji ding (spicy chicken with peanuts). The chicken is stir-fried with vegetables, chillies and peanuts, then coated in a sticky sauce. The pork is battered (for additional carbohydrates), and then must be deep fried to achieve a crunchy, golden crust. Both have a fantastic, rich taste; but all else being equal, your body is going to have an easier time with the chicken (200 calories; 60 calories from fat per serving) than with the pork (410 calories; 270 calories from fat per serving). Of course, it's not the pork's fault - a plate of non-battered yu xiang rou si would similarly be a better pick than a bucket of fried chicken.

Eat more, better veggies. Vegetables tend to be more nutritious the closer they are to their natural state. For one thing, the cooking process makes it so that less energy is required in digestion, meaning that more of what you eat is stored in your body as fat. Also, as liquids in the vegetable become hot and escape, they take nutrients with them, replacing the nutrients with the oil or steam that has been used in the cooking process. Vegetables that require less oil to cook are generally going to provide a better balance of calories and nutrients. Focus on dishes like suan la bai cai (spicy sour Chinese cabbage) and suan rong xi lang hua (broccoli with garlic) while avoiding yu xiang qiezi (spicy tangy eggplant) and gan bian yun dou (Sichuan-style deep fried green beans; sadly, my favourite).

Step away from the buffet. All-you-can-eats fly in the face of only eating as much as you should. But this doesn't mean you can't go with friends to Cafe Yum, Yamuna lunch, Noboru, or any of Qingdao's dozens of other fantastic banqueting spots. Simply avoid the buffet, and order from the equally-gourmet a la carte menu. (The same goes for drinks, only doubly so - the cost of an open bar at Charlie's is the same as four shots of tequila and four bottles of Tsingtao, and you can share your a la carte drinks with friends.) Eat sensibly. You know that sashimi has better protein and less fat than lasagne. So eat the sushi. You may also find that drinking a glass of fruit juice half an hour before mealtime actually helps curb your appetite.

Nightlife A boozehall is a frightening place to bring your weight loss plan. Alcohol is fermented sugar, and its strong flavour owes a lot to the enormous amount of energy that it packs. When you add in the erosion of inhibition that goes along with throwing back a couple, a night on the town could mean flirting with a diet disaster - but not necessarily! Avoid sugary mixed drinks. We often forget that alcohol contains loads of calories; but not as many, it turns out, as the sweet mixers that most people add to make it palatable. A 1.5oz jigger of an 80 proof clear spirit like gin, vodka, tequila, rum or whiskey will have 97 calories. Mixing it with 8oz of Coke (or even tonic water!) will add another 130+ calories, not to mention increasing the likelihood of a hangover because of sugar overload and dehydration. All else being equal, you're better off with shots. Of course, scaling to a smaller, more potent drink may also require a change of pace; try switching to something that you might actually want to sip, like an upper-shelf whisky or rum that you can enjoy alongside a glass of soda water. Also, keep in mind that a 12oz bottle of Tsingtao has 100 fewer calories than that rum & coke. Shape-conscious clubbers around the world are ordering cocktails with artificially-sweetened 'light' or 'diet' beverages, which contain no calories.

Alternatively, you can ask your favourite bars in town to begin stocking diet drinks (like Coke Light), pomegranate juice, cranberry juice and other mixers that won't add to the calorie count (that's how we got an amazing bloody mary at Snail Bar). Dance. So you're at a bar for two, three hours, consuming all the while. Why not spend five minutes between drinks on the dance floor? The Latin Nights around town offer plenty of opportunities to get your groove on in your choice of bar environment, and places like Le Bang, LPG, New York and Corner Jazz tend to have welcoming dance floors, giving you an opportunity to burn off a fraction (if a small one) of the calories you've consumed. If you want to practice in the meantime, talk to the good people at Salsa Q about their evening courses throughout the week.

Sleep. Experts are finding that lack of sleep can impact your brain's production of hormones, including increasing ghrelin (which tells you you're hungry) and decreasing leptin (which tells you your satisfied). As you can imagine, the combined effect is a strong tendency toward weight gain. The less sleep you get, the hungrier you're likely to feel.

The Daily Grind So all of your dedication to deprive yourself at mealtimes, forget about your favourite foods and party responsibly still hasn't slimmed you down and you're close to the breaking point. If you can clear these last few hurdles, you're home free. Build exercise in. If you work in the CBD and live in Chengyang, you aren't going to be walking to work. Tastes like burning Baijiu, also referred to as liexingjiu (potent liquor 烈性酒) or shaojiu (burning liquor 烧酒) is a distilled spirit most commonly produced from sorghum, though an abundance of grains and staple foods such as glutinous rice (particularly in south China), barley, wheat, millet and peas are also used in manufacture. Classification of Chinese baijiu is done according to two methods - the qu 曲 and the aroma. The qu is the fermenting and saccharifying agent (similar to yeast in whisky production), and comes in two forms - da qu and xiao qu. Aromatic classification of baijiu consists of six types. The heaviest, jiang xiang (sauce fragrance 酱香) can be overwhelming to the inexperienced drinker and has striking overtones of ammonia. It is considered a good accompaniment to preserved and pickled foods. Next is nong xiang (heavy fragrance 浓香), characterised by a sweet, lasting taste, and is similar in flavour, weight and body to feng xiang (honey fragrance 蜂香). These two differ almost imperceptibly; only connoisseurs can tell them apart. Qing xiang (light fragrance 清香)

has a dry, clean flavour. Mi xiang (rice fragrance 米香), distilled from rice, has a quite unique flavour in comparison to others. The final form of the white spirit is the blended or layered form, jian xiang (兼香). This is usually comprised of the sauce, heavy and light varieties, and sometimes contains some other mystery of distillation - Three Penis Wine (san bian jiu 三鞭酒), for instance, is purported to contain the penises of ram, deer, dog, ox, or others, mixed with a proprietary blend of Chinese herbs.

One of the most prominent of the ancient traditions associated with Chinese liquor is that of Huadiaojiu 花雕酒. Following the birth of a girl, families from the town of Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province would brew a wine comprised of glutinous rice and wheat, before burying it in the earth. The wine would be excavated during the woman's wedding, and used to entertain the guests. Huadiao literally means 'flower carving' and describes the type of bottle used to store the liquor. In addition to familial traditions, baijiu plays a role in militaristic rituals, and was historically used to toast the troops' victory as they marched to war. And let's not forget the ubiquitous firewater found at all commerce-related banquets, which has shattered the steely reserve of a million foreign businessmen. It is common for business deals to be cut witha heavy night out, where relationships are forged and trust earned - in vino veritas, China style.

A spirited mash-up Manufacturing baijiu is a labyrinth of subtle herb blends, repeated fermentations and frequent distillations. The production method of all the different variants of baijiu (and thus the aromatic categorisation) is defined by the type of qu used. Broadly speaking, the two qu differ in their raw material composition - da qu 大曲 is produced from wheat and barley and is more common in the north, while xiao qu 小曲 is made from rice flour or rice bran and is more common in the south. Xiao qu

is usually mixed with a herb or medicinal base to change the flavour or effect. The qu is brick- or ball-shaped, resulting from repeatedly drying and moistening the pressed grains. During the formation process, mold spreads throughout the block, and a process of maturation that can take up to six months yields a dry block full of bacteria. The qu is then ground up and mixed with boiled sorghum to produce the baijiu mash. This mixture is then allowed to ferment repeatedly, and at every stage is distilled, yielding only the purest and most concentrated spirit. Moutai baijiu undergoes eight separate fermentations, with additional qu added at every stage, generating an alcohol content of around 55-60%. The process can take up to a year, and requires 27kg of sorghum to produce 1kg of spirit.

Baijiu that has been distilled in older factories is considered more appealing, as older batches will have penetrated the container and surrounding soil. The Luzhou variant from Sichuan has a 'factory' that is 380 years old.

Drinking Responsibly In traditional circles, it is considered rude to turn down a glass of baijiu (n.b. , it is seldom offered to women). There are only two ways to turn down a glass in a formal situation - one is "I'm driving," the other is "I'm allergic." Baijiu glasses generally come in two different sizes - a tiny thimbleful for ganbei-ing at weddings and other family affairs, and a somewhat larger variety used at the business events mentioned above. The expectation with the smaller glasses is that you may finish in two sips, or enough for a friendly toast to be returned.

Elegant. Trendy. Affordable. Since the days of Coco Chanel, costume jewelry has lent its sparkle to everything from haute couture runways of Paris and Milan to the stalls of Jimo Lu market. In shopping malls throughout the world, shops like Claire's and Icing are a regular stop for those seeking to redefine themselves with a new pair of earrings, while department store consultants know that a little extra glamour can add a lot to presentation without substantially raising the cost of an outfit. Here in Qingdao, we sit at the centre of the costume jewelry universe; the Huangdao and Chengyang nebulae, if you will, are constantly birthing galaxies of rhinestones and glinting plated metal. There are rumoured to be over 1,000 factories producing costume jewelry in the city. The largest of these export to Europe, US, Japan and Korea in enormous quantities, with others doing their part to meet the worldwide demand for shiny things in lessdeveloped markets. Many local industries have seen a fall in overseas orders as the global recession makes itself felt. But since its popularisation in the early 20th century, costume jewelry has resisted drops in demand that one might expect given a shortage of cash. In times of hardship, consumers

culture 19 may be attracted to its colours and sparkle more than ever, and find that they don't have to sacrifice much to own that little bit of flair. This 'feel-good factor' has allowed local jewelry producers to continue happily shipping product abroad, even as light goods manufacturers struggle to find buyers anywhere. The low start-up cost of costume jewelry design has long attracted creative minds. Once called bijouterie fantaisie (or 'fantasy jewelry'), the greater accessibility of cubic zirconia and base metals versus their precious counterparts means that designers can express themselves in ways that would otherwise be out of reach. Today, designers may be influenced by the availability of materials (and price-point constraints from buyers), or fly to international fashion centres to observe the latest trends, or act on their own inspiration and training to create something from within. With regards to manufacturing, this also means that facilities do not benefit from being close to sites of precious mineral exchange; like many industries here, they locate according to logistical convenience, labour costs and the ability to entertain buyers. Qingdao, for instance, was a natural landing spot after the industry collapsed in the US - especially given that the companies buying the American manufacturing interests were (and are) largely Koreabased. The lower costs of land use and labour and the convenience of links to Seoul made it an ideal choice. Simon Fox has been designing costume jewelry for 25 years (much of it in Qingdao) and we had an opportunity to talk to him about his experience. How did you get involved with Qingdao? In February 1992 I came to China as manager of model making and design for Swarovski's JV factory in Huizhou, Guangdong province and stayed until mid1995. Following three years back in the UK model making for a large costume jewelry networking operation who were sourcing their product in Asia, I moved to Seoul, Korea in September 1998 to set up in-house model making for C&S, who by then had already started manufacturing in Qingdao at Hong Shi Yai on the Huangdao side of Jiaozhou Bay. By 2000 it was time to move model making to China too, and I've been here ever since (although C&S's China operation is now based in Chengyang). I have seen enormous changes in the industry even just during the last four years. It used to be the case that buyers would come out on trips two to three times a year, but these days most customers have permanent offices here in Qingdao with long term expat staff handling everything from design to quality control, CSR, environmental and ethical

This has a knock-on effect of reducing the turnaround time demanded for product development; buyers like to see samples at the next meeting, and these days that could easily mean next week rather than in a month as was the case previously. Why is costume jewelry manufacturing so big here? Its proximity to Korea has been a decisive factor. Korea was the go to manufacturing base following the collapse of the industry in Rhode Island, USA. At the start of the offshore sourcing phenomenon, there was still a long-established skill base to provide technical knowledge and support to suppliers, and of course Korea is a pretty foreigner-friendly country! As Korean companies started to move their operations to China to cut costs and remain competitive, it's only natural that they would come to Qingdao, and their customers (the buyers) would follow. In addition, the setup costs for

costume jewelry manufacture are relatively low and, with the exception of model making, electro-plating and the production of 'High End Quality', the process is relatively quick to learn. Have you seen any change in demand related to the current financial situation? Many of the smaller companies (especially subcontractors) have had to close and things are tight to be sure, but things have been tough for a couple of years now with the reforms that have taken place. Personally, I think costume jewelry falls into to that category of products that benefit from the 'feel-good factor'. The relatively low cost as compared to the perceived value means that people still buy even when times are hard. Historically this is a huge factor in the success of costume jewelry in general, as it can look like a million dollars while only costing a few bucks!

A race like no other It's called the Everest of Sailing - indeed, fewer people have sailed around the globe than have ascended our world's highest peak. It takes incredible strength of physique and presence of mind to guide a vessel in the face of whipping wind and monstrous waves, round the clock for weeks at a time, changing sleeping patterns, without fresh food, skimming the surface of an ocean 10,000 feet deep. For those of us not accustomed to hanging out over open water, it's small surprise that the athletes want move between stops as quickly as possible. But these guys are professionals - each yacht has a crew of eleven, with roles divided amongst the individual members. In addition to their duties, each crew must contain two trained medics and a sailmaker to keep bodies and craft moving forward

But on their departure in early February, these athletes will be staring down the long end of a 12,300 leg to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Cheering for the home team Qingdao is particularly excited for this running of the Volvo Ocean Race. In the wake of this year's Olympic Regatta, the city is eager to hang on to its mantle as China's Sailing City, and joins Cochin as a new Asian host of the event. Beyond that, the Green Dragon yacht is the first ever China-built entry into the race, and claims Qingdao as its own home port. Its crew includes Qingdao native and Clipper Round the World Race veteran Guo Chuan as its media member, and a major part of the boat's sponsorship has come from a Shandongbased industrial consortium made up of Shandong Lingong, Weichai Power and Triangle Group. A representative for the Qingdao International Yacht Club, where the yachts will be berthed, commented that, "In the history of the Volvo Ocean Race, 08-09 is an enormous year of 'firsts' - first time in Asia, first time in China, and the first Chinese boat. We see this as a great opportunity to build on our city's short history of hosting sailing events, and have been preparing in earnest for over a year. We want our city to be known all over the world."

Catch the action! While in Qingdao the yachts will be berthed at the Qingdao International Yacht Club (formerly the Olympic Sailing Centre). A carnival and other local entertainment are planned for the event, but subject to change. The best opportunity to see the action firsthand will be the In-Port Race scheduled for Saturday, 7 February, followed by a PRO-AM Race on Sunday, 8 February. (Check www.myredstar.com for updates!)

As great strides in communications technology merge with this ultimate adventure, the administrators of the race have adopted brilliant means of bringing land-bound types into the action like never before.

Each yacht has a Media Crew Member who is responsible for telling the story of the race from onboard. While the hope is to share the excitement and drama of the race with racing fans everywhere, media personnel are also crew members and are expected to contribute to the immediate task of manning the ship. Ericsson 4's Guy Salter said (in an interview with Riath Al-Samarrai), "This job is simple and difficult for the same reason. On one hand, there’s a great story to be told about people living and working in extreme conditions, and that’s easy to film as there is almost constant hardship onboard. On the other hand, we have to live that life too!"

Google Earth Online spectators have a deckside view of the action with constantly-updated feeds through Google Earth. In recent years, that program has allowed users to post images and other information to display at a particular location; now, Google Earth is tracking the course of each yacht and users can access content that has been uploaded by onboard media personnel at points along the way.

Online Game Over 92,000 players around the globe have taken the helm of their own virtual yacht. Online players have the opportunity to experience something of the thrill of round-the-world sailing, adjusting their headings and sails according to wind data for the course which is updated twice daily. Class of your own Cornered!

As soon as foreigners arrive in China, they begin to hear about English Corners. There are usually no foreigners attending; however, if you are a foreigner, you’ll probably be invited to one at some point. Every Corner is not the same, but the basic idea is that people go to an English Corner to practice speaking English. Since English can be spoken anywhere, why go to the trouble of making it an organised event? My students explain that if Chinese people are speaking together in English, people will think they’re strange. An English Corner is simply an acceptable place to speak English with other learners. There are several ways to involve your students in the English Corner experience. One is to prepare and encourage them by practicing smalltalk in class, modeling introductions and appropriate questions to show interest in the other person. Now get

them looking for the many English Corners held around the city, such as the one at Book City and those on university campuses. Cajole, coerce or offer prizes, but put the pressure on to get them to go. Be sure to follow up afterwards. One of my students was ambushed by a self-important businessman who announced that her pronunciation was poor. He was wrong, but we discussed it with the whole class. Had I not asked, an experience that might have left her too shy to speak, instead became a lesson on how to handle a bully. Another choice is to host your own English Corner. Don’t let the students just ask you questions or you’ll end up being the main one talking. Start conversations by looking for themes. Have everyone bring an English newspaper, surefire study tips, or favourite movies to discuss. Print out lists, such as simple

jokes, riddles, tongue twisters, story starters (“It was midnight when we heard a loud knock at the door…”), or questions. Bring scissors and let the students cut off a strip of paper with their sentence on it. Now’s their opportunity to mingle with others to tell their joke or ask their question. After they’ve repeated it a few times with different people, they can begin trading with others. Bring a thought-provoking question (e.g., “What rights should smokers have versus non-smokers?”) and have a vote after everyone has thoroughly debated it. Get the students to contribute their own ideas, putting them in charge of

planning the topic. Postcards and pictures can be passed around for descriptions or story telling. Print out conversation drills and challenge them to a non-judgmental competition for the one who repeats their drill with the most number of partners. Remember, an English class is not an English Corner, where the goal is simply to get the students talking. Instead, think of your classroom as the workout room where you coach the students and run them through their paces. The English Corner can be the playground where they go to have fun showing off their new skills.

Yi Jing

Chapter 38 "Opposition" There is opposition. You are lucky if it deals with a small matter. When there is opposition, Fire is on top of Lake. Two women share a house, but their wills clash. They fight. Gracefully moving with intelligence, Flexibility enters on the top. Movement gains balance. Is this not strong? Therefore, it is lucky if we are dealing with small things.

Hundred Schools Reflecting on Opposition There was no pain. I didn't even notice it. Yet when I got home from the mountain, I found scratches on my hand bleeding lightly. It was an unusual series of thin parallel cuts on the back of my hand, like a tattoo. Days later, I saw that there were six parallel lines, some broken, some not. Golly - it was a hexagram from the Yi Jing (易经) etched on the back of my hand! Four or five thousand years ago, early mystics would take a tortoise shell and heat it until it cracked. These 'wise men' could discern situations according to the cracks. A broken line was a yin (阴) line; a non-broken one was a yang (阳) line. Yin represents tranquility, docility, or femininity, yang represents strength, power, or creativity. Over time, this evolved into the system of the Yi Jing, wherein the entire universe can purportedly be explained within a system of 64 symbols, each composed of 6 yin/ yang lines, just like the one which seemed to be scratched on my hand. Each Yi Jing symbol represents the interaction between two 'forces'.

Dai Ling (戴岭)

The Yi Jing certainly contains great truths, but it also seems to contain obscure nonsense. Nonetheless, every time I try to use the book, it always seems to tell me something useful. Think of tarot or any number of other 'prophetic' systems. They don't need to really contain magic to help you learn something. Readings are often written ambiguously, such that someone using the so-called oracle will be inspired to see the problem in a fresh, new light... which can still be remarkable. On my hand I found six lines: yang, yin, yang, yin, yang, yang. Opening the Yi Jing, I found that it was the Kui (揆) hexagram ('Opposition') from Chapter 38, the Fire trigram over the Lake trigram, fire meeting water. Coincidence? At that moment, there was clear Opposition in my life. Open honesty with someone came back to bite me when this person lied to me and went behind my back. It was nasty, reminding me again that "no good deed goes unpunished." The coincidence was too much, so I translated this Yi Jing chapter to see what it might offer.

Usually, the book will use metaphors. First, imagine a life situation of Opposition or direct conflict. Then look at the translation. Imagine the exact moment where fire meets water- the sizzle; the water turning to steam. Imagine a catfight, or a battle. Opposition happens when two forces are competing over the same thing, and the opposing forces have something fundamental in common. Therefore, "Heaven and Earth are in opposition, but their goals are the same." And of course, the "junzi lets them be the same, yet different." The book is profound, penetrating, and deeply perplexing. For example, if you like, look at the Yi Jing online. Compare a few translations of Chapter 38 with mine here. Translators disagree widely about what it means. Maybe nobody really knows. Sometimes the mysteries of fate do confound us. A scar from Xiao Zhu Shan left an Yi Jing hexagram on my hand which wildly coincided with the events of my life. Did I gain anything from this? Not really. But it sure was fun.

Heaven and Earth are in opposition, but their goals are the same. Men and Women are in opposition, but their desires are the same. The 10,000 Things are in opposition, but they all have the same dreams. The timely use of Opposition is critical, indeed. With Fire above; Lake below, there is Opposition. The junzi lets them be the same, yet different. 1) There is no regret. If you lose the horse, don't chase it. It will return by itself. Tropic Thunder Directed by Ben Stiller

Mister Lonely

Directed by Harmony Korine A refresher: Harmony Korine gained instant notoriety with his screenplay for Kids (1995's biggest prepackaged cinematic controversy), squeezing appearances on Letterman between further calculated outrages - a blackface performance-art take on the O.J. trial, for example, or the feature-length geek shows Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy. The bad-boy routine soon gave way to the real thing, with Korine falling into hard drugs and near-obscurity. With Mister Lonely, Korine aims to prove he's cleaned up his act. Gone is the grubby look of his previous films, replaced by glossy 'Scope imagery; gone too are the more overt grotesqueries, replaced by self-conscious fairy-tale whimsy (with Mrs. Korine as Red Riding Hood, in case we miss the point). No incest or cat torture here, just a sweet Michael Jackson impersonator (Diego Luna) who meets "Marilyn Monroe" (Samantha Morton) and follows her to a Scottish impersonators' commune, which is a cross between the Island of Misfit Toys and a Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney musical, with James Dean, Madonna, and all the rest constructing a ramshackle stage for their annual show. Korine's provocations are more measured, but still present: "Charlie Chaplin" (Denis Levant), Marilyn's husband, is a sexual sadist, and a prepubescent Buckwheat delivers creepy paens to chicken breasts. Others are at least infrequently amusing, e.g. the commune's foul-mouthed Abraham Lincoln. But the story sags about halfway through, and a muddled ending (monologues about growth and responsibility mixed with appeals to implacable destiny) hints that Korine hadn't quite worked this all out; maybe that's why he includes unrelated business with skydiving nuns, some baffling symbolism evidently meant to lend thematic heft to the underdeveloped main plot. But Mister Lonely's puckishness is still preferable to Gummo or Julien Donkey-Boy's parade of freaks - even if Korine, like a certain ex-resident of Neverland Ranch, still has some growing to do.

Tropic Thunder doesn't waste much time on introductions. An opening ad from gangsta rapper Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) transitions to three mock trailers from the principal cast: part six of a derivative action franchise with Tugg Speedman (Stiller), a gross-out comedy with Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), and a pretentious gay monk indie with Oscar-winner Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.). All three are reasonably convincing, although Speedman's film looks more like a Cannon flick from the '80s than a contemporary blockbuster. It makes sense when one reads that Stiller conceived Thunder two decades ago, which might also explain why the four aforementioned figures sign on to a "prestigious" Vietnam War bloodfest - a genre that peaked during the Reagan administration. But egotistical movie stars are forever, and on-location personality clashes prompt the film-within-the-film's director (Steve Coogan) and military advisor (Nick Nolte) to send the boys into the jungle - a training exercise that escalates into the real thing. Unfortunately, the same thing happens to Tropic Thunder. Stiller's all too fond of Rambo-style excess (a school of filmmmaking already steeped in self-parody), and Thunder is less a spoof of bloated action movies than a bloated action movie with stock comic figures (Stiller's bland Derek Zoolander retread is a particularly weak link). Of the three top-billed stars, only Downey (whose character undergoes a skin-darkening procedure to portray a black sergeant) transcends caricature, by treating a dubious gimmick with commitment worthy of his Method-obsessed character. But it's too much to expect a vicious anti-studio screed from a $150m megaproduction, complete with Tom Cruise in a one-note bit part. Tropic Thunder is really just an expensive opportunity for Hollywood bigshots to prove they don't take themselves seriously, without being too self-critical - and while it was probably a fun time for everyone involved, the feeling doesn't entirely carry over to the screen. -Josh Martin

The Chaser

Directed by Na Hong-jin The Chaser has similarities with Seven - pervasive despair and religious motifs, among others - but rejiggers Seven's stylish gloom and metaphysical bent (psychopath as avenging angel, urban decay as hell on earth) into something more grounded. Forget wholesome, photogenic Brad Pitt -- The Chaser's "hero" is sleazy detective-turnedpimp Eom Joong-ho (Kim Yoon-Seok), who stumbles upon a serial killer (Ha Jeong-Woo) while looking for his missing girls. Convinced that the killer is feigning insanity and has merely kidnapped or sold off the girls, Eom initially treats the entire affair as a pesky inconvenience, and only gets crankier once the police step in. From there, the plot turns into a pileup of bureaucratic disasters. The plight of a few prostitutes doesn't get much attention from Seoul's finest until the Mayor is attacked in the street; now desperate for a quick success, the cops ignore Eom's protests (he believes one of the victims is still alive), and he finally strikes out on his own. But The Chaser doesn't exactly apologise for vigilantism or slam the restrictions on police - if anything, their heavy-handedness (and Eom's) makes things worse, leading them down one blind alley after another. Lest this all sound too heavy, director Na understands the simpler pleasures of a good thriller - no reason miserablism can't get the blood pumping - and his debut film lives up to its title. But it's hardly pandering: Eom's frenetic pursuits show an uncommon attention to the local geography (of Mangwon-Dong, with gated mansions alongside fetid basement apartments), bringing spatial and social dimension along with the adrenaline - this is a living, breathing city, not Seven's nameless metropolis. Some unneeded detours into Guignol prove that Na isn't immune to the lure of cheap thrills, but coming from a greenhand, The Chaser is a spectacular show of welljustified confidence.

A Bit of a Blur Reforming, if not reformed Paul Rey-Burns

After months of speculation, Blur are to reform next summer for two dates in London’s Hyde Park. The first show was sold out within 15 minutes, so a second was added, it ends speculation that the band were ‘talking’ and reports are now coming in that Damon Albarn, Alex James, Graham Coxon and Dave Rowntree have been in the studio recording new material. Lead singer Albarn has kept himself busy over the last 5 years since their split with successful projects such as Gorrilaz and The Good the Bad and the Queen, while guitarist Coxon has enjoyed a solid solo career. Bassist James’ autobiography A Bit of a Blur has become a bestseller and drummer Rowntree has pursued a political career standing as a Labour councill or. Winners and Losers Surviving a China Downturn

While there is no doubt there has been a significant slowdown in exports from China this year, how long this trend will remain is unclear. Preparations made for a recession are challenging, but consumers will continue to buy, albeit less expensive products. It remains to be seen if the impact of the global credit crisis has filtered through China’s export orders. Chinese exports could also be affected by trade protectionism issues and it remains to be seen what the United States’ new president may do about this.

China’s slowdown has been covered by global media, and most of what’s been written has been made up of doomsday rhetoric related to the demise of Wall Street. While a number of complications surround the global credit squeeze, China appears a simple case to assess. Essentially, businesses that focus on the sale of products or services to export markets that are in decline will suffer, while those who have a healthy spread of sales into the China market will thrive. Let’s look more closely at both scenarios. For those exporting to overseas markets, although the trend has been downward in the past few months, and businesses in Guangdong province have been hit hard, there are still significant ifs and buts to consider about how deep a retraction of this will reach. Businesses that sell in the local market may even do okay if not prosper. Much of China remains unaffected by the global downturn, and again, the government has been active in supporting an economic stimulation plan for the local economy. Banks will continue to lend — China’s retail sales jumped by 22 percent last month, the highest increase in nine years. When assessing the likely impact of the global downturn in 2009, businesses will need to look at the spread of businesses they serve: Are they export driven or are they domestically focused? Although one thing seems certain, when it comes to China, it is premature to suggest that 2009 will be a year of retrenchment.

Rending spiced lamb from the bone is always a treat, but more than a few of my favourite eateries were among the spate of restaurant closures that prefigured last Summer’s Olympics, leaving local foodies with a selection of admirable Sichuan-heavy analogues. So when a Xinjiang native recently recommended a meal at Xinjiang hong shi liu (新疆红石榴) as the real deal, I knew that I was in for something special. Xinjiang cuisine derives more from the flavours that reign in the Middle East and Persia than it does from the Eight Great Traditions (八大菜系) of Chinese dining. The prevalence of lamb, aromatic rice dishes, passion for cumin, garlic and chili powder all point to an entirely different background, even if the dishes do arrive in bite-sized portions that fit conveniently between my kuaizi. We began with snow lily tea and jiao ma ji - an appetiser of spring hen with raw spring onions and sweet red bell peppers, tossed in a la jiao sauce. For veggie eaters, there was a wei gu, gigantic mushrooms served with broccoli and doufu. A pleasant, light introduction, but we didn’t have time to get much into it - the lamb arrived. Over the next hour we acquainted ourselves with three distinct varieties of lamb, each in my view a

crowning achievement of Xinjiang culture. The first was nang bao rou, in which a hearty lamb stew is poured over naan bread. The bread sops up the rich juices, leaving tender morsels of meat to be enjoyed on their own. Second to the table was kao yang pai (roasted lamb), a speciality of the restaurant. Guests may order an entire sheep (or a half, or a quarter, etc. according to the size of the group), which is lightly spiced and brought out in full form. I struggled to slip the meat out between the skin and bone, but those who like something to sink their teeth into will not be disappointed. Finally, a noodle course which in my view could adequately stand in for dessert. Guo you rou ban mian is a relatively simple arrangement of handmade noodles topped with a stir-fry of lamb, onions and capsicum. I was full by the time this dish arrived, but in the interest of journalism finished most of my bowl. A meal like this, for four, is around 200元. Xinjiang hong shi liu (新疆红石榴) is located in the hip new Tian Mu Cheng food palace, between gates 6 and 7. The main entrance to Tian Mu Cheng is on Dengzhou Lu. For reservations, call 8202-8018.

Spare the Ox; we’ve got lamb! Eric Blocher

In honour of the Year of the Ox, we’ve decided not to showcase Fatih’s signature Beef Back Ribs. Not only is it sensitive to cows, but the method requires cooking each rib in a sealed container for sixteen hours at only 55º, an exacting method known as sous-vide. The method leaves meat phenomenally tender but is beyond the resources of most amateur chefs. What we are talking about here is Australian Lamb. This hearty serving of top quality meat and minty gremolata makes for a lovely centrepiece, and pairs very well with Shiraz/Syrah wines. It’s rich enough to help keep you warm through the tough winter nights ahead.

Materials Lamb • Saute pan, oven tray, oven • 1200g (4 pcs) Rack of lamb • 10g Sea salt • 5g Black pepper • 40g Extra virgin olive oil Gremolata • Small bowl • 20g Italian parsley • 20g Mint leaves • 5g Lemon zest • 30g Extra virgin olive oil • 40g Roasted almonds • 5g Sea salt Balsamic Reduction • Saucepan • 160ml Balsamic vinegar • 80ml Apple juice • Small sprig of rosemary • 5g Thyme leaves • 10g Orange zest Method 1. Preheat oven to 205º.

An early example of the precision that is the hallmark of this international hospitality leader can be found just off the main lobby, in Wild Fire. While the atmosphere is stripped-down slate and an expo style kitchen, the Mediterranean salad bar and juicy steaks make dining anything but bare bones.

2. Chop parsley, mint leaves and roasted almonds into strips no wider than 3mm. Add to other gremolata ingredients in a small bowl and stir.

The perfect combinations of tastes and temperatures owe in large part to Fatih, a ten-year veteran of the culinary trade who, as sous chef, oversees the grill. A native of Turkey, Fatih worked exclusively in Michelin-starred restaurants in Instanbul and St. Petersburg before arriving to treat Qingdao to the finer things in life.

3. In a saucepan, combine ingredients for reduction and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until only about 1/4 of the original quantity remains. 4. Season each piece of lamb with salt and pepper. Place 10g olive oil into saute pan over medium high heat. When the oil is hot, place the lamb (fat side down) into the pan, cooking until the fat turns golden and begins to separate from the meat (about three minutes). Continue to cook, turning evenly, about two minutes per side. Transfer the lamb to the oven and cook to desired temperature (five minutes for rare). 5. Garnish the lamb with gremolata, and drizzle with balsamic reduction. Serve each chop on an individual plate. Enjoy!

Lu Xun Park, located in the shadow of Xiao Yu Shan, is a modest but serene little park offering lavish ocean and sunset views. From its vantage points, one can look out over Huiquan Bay all the way to Badaguan, to the east. Crafted by horticulturist Ge Jingying, the park was completed in 1929 and was originally named Ruoyo Park in honour of Qingdao’s mayor of the day. It was changed to Seaside Park by the incumbent mayor of 1931, before becoming Lu Xun Park in 1950, in honour of one of China’s foremost modern writers. The park follows the coast for about 2km, and includes calligraphy by Zheng Shifen on its memorial gates. Lu Xun (1881 - 1936, real name Zhou Shuren) is considered an iconoclastic figure in Chinese literature - his first major published work is also widely thought to be the first text written in modern Chinese. Provocatively entitled A Madman’s Diary (1918), it is the story of a villager rapturous with a cannibalistic paranoia about the residents of the neighbouring village; a paranoia that soon spreads into his daily life and relationships with his acquaintances. Rustic peasantry is a common theme in his work. Before Lu Xun, books were written in the Chinese literary style of prose; a style very different to that spoken by commoners - no scholar of any esteem would have chosen to use the common tongue. By giving the peasant class ready access to his work, he is seen as an activist for educational reform. He was also active during the May 4th Movement that advocated adoption of some western ideas, such as increased use of pinyin.

His most famous work is The True Story of Ah-Q, the narrative of which follows a self-deluding peasant who shapes defeat into victory in his own mind. This was symptomatic of the Chinese character at the time, and now the saying ‘The spirit of Ah-Q’ (啊Q精神 A-Q jingshen) has become a derogatory term for anyone who has convinced themselves of non-existant success. Lu Xun was among a class of writers that also included the legendary contemporary Chinese writer, Lao Shi, who lived in Qingdao during the 1920s. This loosely affiliated group were in some respects comparable to America’s Beat Generation of the 1950s - anti-establishment intellectuals who shunned politics and activism in favour of a hedonistic, nomadic lifestyle, and were highly sought after by both the communists and nationalists in propagandist writing. Lu Xun participated, but not to the extent that he might have done, had he lived until the formation of the PRC. Lu Xun Park - admission is free during Winter months. Beneath Xiaozhu Shan are some foothills, a fine place for an afternoon hike or a morning run. The grass is green, and for most of the year, the sky is blue. The ground is now frozen hard, but usually it’s not. You can find shepherds up there every day grazing their animals. Some have cows; some have goats; some have both. In all, there are about 10 households who graze animals around the mountain - the Kaifaqu side of the mountain, anyways. Usually, a shepherd takes his herd out early in the morning then comes back for a long lunch and nap. In the afternoon, he takes them out again. One shepherd I know usually does goats in the morning and then cows in the afternoon, or vice-versa. One good trick he uses with cows is to tie up the mother cow. Since calves never stray from their mother, he is free to roam his goats. (That trick works with goats, too.) One homestead has about 600 goats! It’s quite a business, and they divide the herd into groups of 60 or so for grazing. On a smaller scale, there is one lone shepherd named Song who often takes his small herd of 25 or so far up onto Xiaozhu Shan. He is a true mountain man (with real mountain goats!). One time, I saw someone lose control of a large calf. It ran amok, stampeding through a neighbor’s cabbage. Boy, was she mad! Still though, the shepherds provide a different perspective on our digital age. Many farmers have hand phones, but the shepherds, for whatever reason, don’t. You can see them lounging in the hills, watching their herds, doing seemingly nothing, passing the time while their animals feed. It’s the slow life.

Woooow! Christmas partying, New Year’s Eve and all this 2008 stuff is done. Qingdao, let me welcome you to the new year of 2009. Let’s make it even more hardcore from the very beginning. So what’s next? Resolutions? Should I work on my belly at the gym every week? Should I stop smoking? I’d like to think I’ll be able to celebrate whatever possible - next big cause being Chinese New Year or Chunjie. What is it? Spring festival is the start of a new Lunar Year, the most important of all festivals in East Asia. Different provinces and ethnic groups have unique ways of celebrating, but most common everywhere is that people go back to their hometown to stay with their family, and pay old friends a visit. Fireworks and firecrackers are everywhere, too. The noise is supposed to scare away all the evil spirits and bring peace to earth. Another way to scare ghosts away is to leave lights on during the night time. Besides that, all the doors are getting decorated with red scrolls. The character on them, 福 (fú), means luck. You can also leave your doors open to let luck come in. Unfortunately, it’s very disappointing to me that people do not tend to go out and party. They prefer to stay home, chat and play games all night long while eating enormous amounts of jiaozi. For Chunjie, China gets really peaceful (except all the explosions everywhere). Banks are usually closed. You can hardly find any stores open. Bars are pretty much empty of Chinese patrons as well. Gong xi fa cai, success to you in the coming year, and good luck finding much nightlife during the holiday 25-26 January. Enjoy the jiaozi!
