What Do You Do?

Youcha, Xuefeng Pig, Horse—China What is your area of expertise? Youcha: I collect and sell antiques in the Culture Market on Chang Le Road. I'm originally from Henan, but have been living in Qingdao for some 15 years. Xuefeng: I do the same but have only been in Qingdao for 3 years. Where are most of your customers from? Both: They're mostly Chinese, but we also get a lot of Koreans, Japanese, Russians, and Americans. They are usually interested in porcelain. What do you enjoy collecting? Xuefeng: I enjoy collecting jade for the selection process, evaluating its color and quality. Youcha: I like dragon motifs, and this old Buddhist water pipe. Can you still use it? Yes, I do. Can you tell me about your hat? Xuefeng: The hat is from Henan. It was a fox. Some minorities in China worshipped wolves and foxes, and foxes were believed to be the animal form of beautiful women spirits.

Elaine Rooster—China What do you do? I'm a manager for the Vietnamese restaurant Pho 8. What experience did you have in the service industry? I studied Hotel Management at Qingdao University, and then worked on a cruise ship for three years. What were some of the low and high points? At first I felt seasick—especially in some rough seas around Thailand—but three months later I was used to it. In fact, I felt dizzy when walking on land! I had trouble understanding the different accents of people from various cultures, but this also improved my language skills; I now speak English, Japanese, and conversational French and Italian. Because it's often difficult to travel as a Chinese National with all the visas and paperwork, working on the ship gave me a great opportunity to see more of the world.

Andy Tiger—UK What is your degree and job? I have a degree in Naval Architecture from South Hampton University in England. I'm a ship surveyor, inspecting ships from steel plate and machinery through building to make sure they are safe and seaworthy. Perks and pitfalls? I've traveled a lot with the job, having lived in Turkey, Spain, and now China. There's a lot of variety; each ship is different so you don't know what you're going to find—including the lunches—and it's quite satisfying to see the ships are better after repairs than when they came in. What I don't like is having to climb around dark, dirty places in the January cold. Since ships operate 24/7, I'm probably working over Chinese New Year. Your dream job? An astronaut, because it must be so peaceful and beautiful up there... Or a Qingdao bus driver. They rule the road.

Pan Wen Yi Tiger—China What do you do for a living? I am an artist. I'm self-taught and have been painting since I was 14 years old. I've been a professional artist for 20 some years, working with a local agent to exhibit in Qingdao, Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and most recently, Chengdu. I also teach painting to several students from China, America, and Italy. What are your influences? I have a very personal style, painting the images in my mind and from my dreams. Lately, I've been inspired by elements from Buddhism, Taoism, and music. What are your goals? I hope to improve myself through my art, traveling and exhibiting internationally to broaden my perspective. What career advice do you give to your students? Follow your dreams. Don't ever give up.

Wen Qing Sheep—China What it is your occupation and field of study? I'm a photographer for So Life magazine in Qingdao, shooting mostly portraits of people, but also food, interiors, and events. I'm self-taught, beginning with a friend's manual Russian camera. Despite many early rolls that came out all black, it's been a fun learning process. I actually studied business. My mom picked it for me, thinking I would have better job security. What about your personal photography? I like old houses or to capture unexpected beauty that you can't control but are lucky to happen upon. In an old, rundown neighbourhood I once came across twin girls who were happy to let me photograph them. They were naturally beautiful and smiling, but you could see that their lives were also hard. I find there's more truth in the faces of the very young and old. In between, people are too preoccupied with looking good.

Diane Dragon—US Describe your career path. I graduated high school at 17, and wasn't sure what to do. My mother guided me to study nursing, and I worked as a travel nurse for independent companies, taking 13-week contracts all over the US and the Virgin Islands. My favourite field was neonatal intensive, as the majority of the work was about life, hope, and the dreams of a family—a much more positive experience compared to disease oriented fields. I had great benefits, paid travel and moving expenses, and a lot of freedom. In my thirties, I settled into a more permanent position as a certified diabetic educator, realising it was the only way to create any seniority and become a specialist. What are you doing now? I'm learning Chinese and going back to school through an online US university for a second degree in Environmental Management, with a Business minor. No matter what stage you are in life, it's about keeping things fresh and yourself stimulated.

Fireworks claim lives

The find was actually made in March 2008, but had not been announced until late December, by which time over 7,600 bones had been unearthed. This is potentially the largest single area of dinosaur remains ever discovered, a claim made by Professor Zhao Xijin, lead palaeontologist of the excavation, which was later asserted by Dr. Paul Barrett of London's Natural History Museum.

the remains of a 2m caratopsid (triceratops) skull and what may be the worlds largest ever hadrosaur (duck-billed dinosaur), at 60m long.

Detailed information is expected to be released later in 2009, after operations recommence in warmer weather. The bones are estimated to come from around 100-65 million years ago, around the time of the extinction event that ended the dinosaur's run on Earth. Shandong authorities, predictably, have begun building an amusement park to bring the site's excitement to the masses.

Government comes down on harmful websites

An explosion in Weifang, Shandong Pr. took the lives of 13 people on 3 January, and a blast in Guangzhou eight days later killed five more, prompting the action, which saw the presence of fireworks on street corners drop considerably compared with last year.

Google and Baidu are among several leading internet portals to have been laid under the microscope recently, amid official accusations that they are spreading pornography and are responsible for, "A vulgar tone [which] has seriously damaged the physical and mental health of youth," (Cai Mingzhao, Dep. Press Chief, State Council).

The crackdown involved increased power to punish offenders and safety checks on transport routes.

The government warned that the service providers must do more to block harmful material from

being accessed by consumers. Pornography is officially illegal in China, but is widely available on the internet. Other companies accused of hosting or supplying inappropriate content included Sina, Sohu, Tencent and a number of popular blog sites. Jeremy Goldkorn, the founder of Beijing-based Danwei.org, one of the most accessible and well-maintained English language

websites to focus on Chinese media said, "The fact that they rapped every major Web site on the knuckles ... it is sending a message out to be on their best behavior and that's a system that everyone understands."

Fiscal stimulants Wen: Qingdao jia you! Prime Minister Wen Jiabao visited Qingdao in early January on a state visit to assess the current economic climate. Following Beijing's injection of 4 trillion yuan, a number of fiscal policies have been introduced to keep the economy from sinking into recession. "The policy measures we have taken have achieved initial results," said Wen, to China National Radio. "Economic conditions are better than expected." The minister went on to say that some revenues are rising, unsold goods are selling and power consumption is growing, though didn't quote any figures. Wen visited a number of locations in Qingdao including the port areas, farmlands, and companies such as Haier and Kingking, praising them on finding opportunities in crisis.

A fistful of monetary policies The biggest decisions and changes to financial policy involve China's Central Bank, which has decreased both interest rates and reserve requirements to encourage people to continue borrowing. The government are also intending to change the Yuan into a foreign exchange currency, by allowing it to be accepted in foreign exchange with ASEAN nations, particularly around the southern areas of Guangxi Autonomous Region and Yunnan. Eventually this will require the Yuan to be subject to market fluctuations and not artificially controlled, as it is now.

Beijing is also trying to decrease dependency on exports, while increasing domestic spending by applying subsidies and price reductions, in an effort to curb unemployment and keep people spending. New fiscal policies have been put in place in various areas ranging from decreased interest rates on mortgage lending in Qingdao, Beijing and Shanghai to subsidies on electronics in rural areas (including in Shandong), to directing of funds into scientific and technological research programs. Heavy industries are seeking, through merger and acquisition to improve production methods and cut costs in manufacture. For example, Shandong, which is China's largest gold producer, and it's state-owned Gold Mining Company has recently purchased 74% of Inner Mongolia's Chifeng Chaihulanzi Mining, and companies in China's steel industry, one of the most fractious steel industries in the world, are seeking similar deals.

Thrifty urbanites Conversely, while Beijing urges consumers to keep spending and borrowing, many white collar urbanites are pinching pennies like never before. Recent postings on popular websites and blogs are urging others to live more frugally, such as Beijingite Wang Hao, who has launched a campaign to cut living costs to 100元 per week. Previously it was not uncommon for city workers to spend more than they earned but this has become less popular in recent months.

Economic growth

Previously, the USD and Euro were used for most foreign exchange but the likelihood of the USD slipping and the irritation this could cause for traders between China and wider Asia is seen as reason enough to begin the transition.

Korean Business Wanes Over 200 of an estimated 8,000 small and medium sized Korean enterprises have fled QIngdao since the start of the economic crisis, many of them without going through correct liquidation procedures. The closing of such businesses has prompted the Chinese government to take action against the offending companies by seeking legal advice, in lieu of a number of complaints related to unfair dismissal or outstanding wages, by local employees. However English language media in Korea claims that while setting up businesses in China is straightforward, there is no consistent policy for leaving. Businesses are expected to file exit claims with individual tax, customs, labour and foreign exchange bureaus in a procedure that can take up to two years. Annual growth in Korea will decline to 2.7% in the coming months, reportedly the lowest since the financial crisis of 1998.

At least 6 babies died and nearly 300,000 more suffered health complications. Protests have taken place across the country. REDSTAR Live

4 March - Rebuilding The Rights Of Statues One of the most successful Chinese indie bands of recent years, Rebuilding The Rights Of Statues (重塑雕像的权利 chóng sù diao xiàng de quán lì) is a 4-piece agglomeration of menacingly intellectual and inured urban detritus, that deliver dominant, driving basslines, harrowing lyrics and hypnotic rhythmic trickery in copious amounts creating an atmosphere that's like getting hit in the face with a sledgehammer of sound. Think Joy Division's Transmission, but angrier. It's 2002 and Hua Dong, son of an intellectual family in Nanjing, has recently returned from a stint studying in Germany. Now back in his hometown, he's become a mainstay on the local indie scene, drumming for soon-to-be seminal Chinese rockers PK14 (REDSTAR Live Sept 2008). It's in the town's dimly lit, introverted indie bars that he meets one Liu Min, demure and diminutive bassist and owner of a dark and brooding howl - perfect for the backing vocals that would one day enrapture the dimly lit, introverted indie bars of Beijing and beyond.

Arriving in Beijing in 2003, the twosome are introduced to drummer Ma Hui, a man who in his infancy had witnessed one of the biggest atrocities to ever hit China - the 1976 earthquake at Tangshan City, between Beijing and Dalian, an event that, depending on your sources, took anywhere between two- and six-hundred thousand lives. Musically, the trio clicked, instantly morphing from a directionless group of musicians into a focussed unit, as Hua Dong gave up drums and assumed his position at the helm. Plainly, by virtue of the band's cumulative experience; the years abroad, the shock of catastrophe and the intellectual influence from such an early age, the group were destined to rise above the norm for Chinese punk and produce something altogether more powerful. "It's like a game of cat and mouse to see who can win," said Hua Dong. He was talking to NPR, while on tour in the US, about how the band are made to deliver translations of their English lyrics to officials before they publish anything. "Maybe sometimes when we translate it, it might be wrong."

That's rock n' roll. The band are touring China in February and March, and will be visiting over 10 cities across China, in the first wave of Modern Sky Records' 2009 push to spread their performance-honed acts around the Middle Kingdom. Later in the year, Rebuilding... will embark on their second tour of America. During their first, in March 2007, with Tag Team Records acting as their international record label, the band played the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas before heading to New York for a string of performances that

saw them get picked to appear on ABC's The Mix and National Public Radio. Their first album, Cut Off! is available from Modern Sky or Tag Team Records. They are currently promoting their new album, Watch Out! The Climate Has Changed, Fat Mum Rises!

it's almost like going back to the 60s, when music was new

MAX 09 Music and Art dates announced "In England, there's only a small percentage of bands at the top that actually make it. Unfortunately, you have to live with it. But you come over here, play shows, headline places. You feel like a king." After the dust settled on Day 1 of MAX 08, Playmaker frontman Paul Rey-Burns spoke to In Deep Films about the enthusiasm of the burgeoning Chinese rock scene, "It's almost like going back to the 60s, when music was new. Everyone would go to a concert hall with a crap PA... and The Beatles would come on, or The Kinks, or The Who." REDSTAR's annual music and arts extravaganza, MAX, is slated to take place during the week ending 11 April, and will culminate in a massive concert featuring at least 9 bands from China and abroad at Chuangyi Yibai, the creative industry centre at 100 Nanjing Lu. Now in its 3rd year, the stripped-bare indie festival will differ from its last two incarnations by spreading the festivities further around the city than ever before. London's Playmaker will return to China for the third time in as many years, ending a north China tour by headlining the festival, on Saturday 11 April. Other acts likely to visit include Qingdao favourites Tookoo (REDSTAR Live, Aug 08), Ziyo (REDSTAR Live, Oct 08) and one of the most innovative and imaginative bands ever to come out of China, The Swamp. The bands will perform at venues throughout the city before the main event at Chuangyi Yibai. Little is confirmed about the artists and exhibition venues at this stage, but several showings are

planned, including one in the old German Guesthouse, renovated in 2008 and available for use as a creative space. Other exhibitions are planned to coincide at REDSTAR and La Villa French Restaurant. The REDSTAR Qingdao MAX event started in 2007, in which a two-day art exhibition was proceeded by a 6-band concert. The art exhibitions took place on all four floors of Chuangyi Yibai, with space dedicated to videographic and multimedia artists from Beijing Film Academy, numerous local artists including Song Wenjing and Pan Wenyi, and to local schools so that students could partake in a the creative atmosphere. By MAX 08, the festival had expanded into a two-day concert, featuring the cream of Beijing's indie music crop (See MAX 08 revisited), and a week of art exhibitions. This year, after the bands, who took rock n' roll in Qingdao to new heights of excess, the concert space became the exhibition hall by innovative use of bamboo, scaffolding and rope. A menagerie of dangling watercolours, photography and walled-off workshops was the result of a minimalist approach intended to incorporate the surrounding cityscape and natural light. Tickets for the main event will be available from 10 February and capacity is 1,500. Please book in advance, we cannot guarantee they will be available on the door. 65元 (30元 w/ valid student ID)

We need you! How can you contribute? MAX 09 is still very early in the planning stages - REDSTAR are looking for local artists to exhibit at the event, and rock and indie bands to perform at the concert and related gigs throughout the city. Artists should have at least 5 works of painting, photography or sculpture to exhibit. REDSTAR has facilities for film screenings, and will strive to enable artists of any discipline - including performance and multimedia - to display their work. Work by Qingdao-based artists and work featuring local subject matter will be given priority for display. Please send us a portfolio in order to be considered for the event. Bands must consist of three members or more and be comprised of experienced and charismatic live musicians. They MUST have original material (though one or two covers are acceptable in a set). They should be appealing to the audience and play modern music. Bear in mind that the main stylistic focus of the event is independent rock. Send us your demo! If you are a candidate for participation in MAX 09, please make contact ASAP by emailing info@myredstar.com

Whose Line Is It Anyway? Whose Line Is It Anyway, the improvisational comedy institution, will be on show in Qingdao's newest 5-star hotel, The InterContinental, on 11 February. In association with The Punchline Comedy Club, REDSTAR is bringing no less then five veterans of the UK comedy scene, namely Richard Vranch, Ian Coppinger, Steve Steen, Stephen Frost and Andy Smart for a one-night-only performance in InterContinental's deluxe 487-seater auditorium. This is definitely a night not to be missed.

In a style of your choosing... The engrossing comedic extravaganza, for those unfamiliar with the format, is one of the longest-running improvisational programmes in TV history, and invites maximum audience participation. The bewilderingly talented and daring actors use audience suggestions to decide scenarios and events that they must perform, without scripting, rehearing or planning of any kind. Often, the suggestions come from the audience and can be anything from a Disney musical or hillbilly hoedown to film noir pastiche or Hollywood blockbuster.

Off the cuff The actors on this tour each boast a formidable resume, several having been regular guests on the British version while it was televised. Stephen Frost, whose list of accolades include starring in several episodes of iconic historical sitcom Blackadder, as well as playing a regular role in cult student comedy The Young Ones, is the most recognisable performer on this tour. Steve Steen, best known for his improv partnership with Jim Sweeney, was a frequent regular on the show while it was aired, and like Frost he has also featured in Blackadder in addition to being a mainstay on TV panel shows in the 80s and 90s. Andy Smart has been a featured member of The Comedy Store Players since 1995, arriving there from a round-about passage via street entertainment and one too many visits to the Pamplona Bull Running Festival, which he does like clockwork every year. Newcomer Ian Coppinger, described by the Irish Times as, "A sophisticated Billy Connolly," is one of Ireland's busiest comedians and comic writers, having penned scripts for The Late Late Show and The Stand Up Show, but whose primary concern remains The Comedy Improv, which he founded in 1992 and performs every Monday at the International Bar in Dublin. Notably, Richard Vranch, the musician who provided backing on both the British and American versions of Whose Line - and who is a revered improv comic in his own right having spent 25 consecutive years at the

A comedic institution Improv was a hugely popular niche of comedy in the 80s and 90s, largely due to the success of the Whose Line institution. While televised, the show was a stepping stone between the comedy club circuit and mainstream commercial success. Its legacy in the field of improv lives on, and its performers still guarantee a packed house in the comedy clubs of London and New York. In 1988, the format was devised by producers Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson, and shortly afterwards, it aired on BBC Radio. With regular performers John Sessions and Stephen Fry, and former barrister Clive Anderson as host, it took just six episodes before making the move to television, switching from BBC to Channel 4, who swung the decision by guaranteeing the producers a second series before the first had even aired. By its fifth series, the public's affection for improv comedy had peaked, and local comedy clubs emerged as pools of improvisational comic talent. One of these was The Comedy Store Players, that nurtured young performers such as Josie Lawrence and Paul Merton, who have since reached legendary status in UK television. It was during this period that the most successful of Whose Line performers would make their debuts.

One of a rare breed of comedy show to succeed on both sides of the Atlantic, Whose Line moved stateside in 1998, largely due to the presence of Americans Greg Proops and Ryan Stiles, and Canadian Colin Mochrie - and it was the latter two who's stage interactions came to define the show. Occasionally competitive but always hilarious, the gifted pair stared down all the challenges of impromptu acting, deftly reacting to abruptly changing narratives, coming up with whole verses of rhyme on the spot and stealing the scene at every possible opportunity.

The televised version was cancelled in the UK that same year, but continued in the US until 2006. Reruns of both versions of the show occupy a constantly rotating circuit on cable networks in both countries, and the format has been repackaged and sent around the world. in Germany, it has become Frei Schnauze, India has Lo Kar Lo Baat and other versions exist in Belgium, Holland, Australia, Norway and Turkey, among others. The original Whose Line continues with weekly slots at London's Comedy Store, when it's not in Qingdao.

14 culture named Luo Lan, who is credited with opening China's first pole dancing school, performed a routine in a New Year's gala that was televised in most parts of the country. Limited in its early days to houses of questionable repute, it now has faces as varied as the unsettling python fetish art of Feeling VIP and the chic weekly Cover Girls Night at Q Bar. While local women and men alike clamour to fulfill their fitness goals, career targets and fun quotas, as many as ten different training centres have opened throughout the city, offering classes throughout the week. Of the nearly one hundred students at the Sifang locale, about half are preparing for regular dancing gigs at nightclubs around town, where four or five brief performances can fetch a few hundred renminbi.

Heads Will Spin Pole dancing's revolution It's a wintry dusk in Sifang, and at an otherwise dormant intersection a crowd of brown and grayclad men stand huddled against a storefront. The throng numbers close to thirty. Through the glass doors, a porous screen of technicolored feather boas provide an alluring suggestion of privacy, giving way to a scene that contrasts startlingly with its austere surroundings. Inside, young women take turns shimmying up across the gaze of the shivering assemblage to the ceiling of the studio, and then spiral down to the floor in backbreaking, captivating poses. On an unglamourous sidestreet, miles from downtown, they stand at the cutting edge of a booming fitness trend. After pole dancing had become a nightclub staple in the '80s and '90s, a growing body of women could attest to its effectiveness for getting in shape, while audiences saluted its uniqueness as an expressive form. In recent years, trendy workout centres in the US and Canada have sprouted dancing poles of their own, combining a touch more cloth and an understanding of human physiology to create a glamourous fitness craze. Qingdao's pole dancing landscape has seen a major shift since dancers began appearing on China's vanilla-tinted national media; most recently a woman

Other students do it for the thrill. Ying is a recent university graduate who was looking for a hobby to fill her evenings, and found herself drawn to learning the graceful, exciting moves over the prospect of more language courses. After three months of training, she has twirled her way to the top of the class, performs occasionally at Q Bar and has begun teaching others. Her friends Joyce and Miki have agreed to perform at an office Chunjie bash, and are along for their first lesson. Like thousands of other recent devotees, Joyce was turned on to the art when mandopop superstarlet Jolin Tsai dazzled audiences by including a pole dance in her routine at a concert in April 2008. As in all walks of life, looking good on a pole takes effort. Both Joyce and Miki will have to perform a free-form dance audition to help Hua Zi, a ten-year veteran from the Yangtze Delta, determine whether they are instructable. In addition to the callouses that have formed on her hands, Ying has a few scars where the stiletto of a twirling classmate caught her mid-spiral. A tailbone is sorely bruised when a dancer loses her grip and plummets seven feet to the floor, but after laughing it off she scurries back up to try the spin again. Even with six poles and nightly classes it's impossible for Hua Zi to keep up with demand, and a colleague offers a hip-hop crash course to those waiting their turn. The growing enthusiasm for the art is also evident outside, where the much of the crowd has now been watching from the cold for over an hour. Ying feels that pole dancing is a dreamy blend of fun and spectacle; "When you can really spin around, it's just like flying," she says. "And when I'm doing it, I know I must be beautiful to watch." With parents matchmaking, too much time was wasted on saving face, saying, 'hmm, not bad', when really there was no interest at all... units and companies took it upon themselves to arrange social events (工会, gōng huì) and even unions for their employees or between those of other companies. Today, along with Valentine's Day's (情 人节, Qīng rén jiĕ) influx of roses, chocolates, and saccharine Hallmark cards, Chinese people have increasingly more freedom and personal wealth to make their own choices in love and marriage. Technology can even help speed up fate through Internet dating services, television dating programs, and speed-dating events organized by radio stations and magazines. Parents are often still involved, sometimes gathering in parks and other designated areas to exchange photographs and the stats (salary, house, car) of their son or daughter who is too busy working to troll in person.

Like Cupid with his piercing arrow, in Chinese culture the old man in the moon ("月老, yuè lăo") ties a magical red thread (红线, hóngxiàn) around your wrist while connecting the other end to the wrist of your 'soulmate'. Though invisible to the mortal eye, the thread is believed to play an important role in your fate, or yuánfèn (缘分) .

Centuries ago, when unmarried women were not permitted to leave the house, it was virtually impossible for single women to meet men and cultivate their own love interests. Instead, they relied on the judgement of their parents and the services of an old matchmaker woman (红娘, hóngniăng) to ensure their backgrounds, zodiac signs, birthdays, and even birth hours were aligned. However, upon meeting one another, two didn't seem to think she was attractive or tall enough, two just wanted to be friends, and one didn't answer at all. She felt like a failure, but was determined to find her match. I may not be pretty enough, she thought, but I'm pretty smart. Feeling her personality and intellect could be better showcased in a different forum, she decided to try her luck online.

Love is in the Air For an atmosphere of timeless intimacy, try these Qingdao destinations: Cafe Roland There are plenty of nooks and crannies in this early 20th Century German villa and, if the weather permits, the view of Qingdao's CBD skyline from No 3 Beach may well put a twinkle in your eyes. 9 Taipingjiao Er Lu 8387-5734

Before long, Eve found a singles section on a news club website, and posted a profile listing her height, job, hobbies, a fake name, her MSN details, and no photo. The profile also included the following set of expectations for a future partner. According to Eve, he must be: • More than 1.7 m tall • Have at least a bachelor's degree • Earn a minimum monthly income of RMB 5,000 Two days later, while working late at the office, Eve received a blinking incoming message from a mysterious man named Tom*. He wanted to know why she had such stringent requirements for a guy. She replied, "Because I'm worth it." Tom argued that she herself wasn't very tall and didn't make that much money, and they bickered back and forth about double standards for half an hour. Tired of typing, Eve finally dared him to give her his telephone number. He did, and she called him from a public phone to maintain her anonymity. Their tone softened somewhat over the phone, and they found they actually had a lot in common. She asked him if he thought men or women were stronger. He suggested they meet in person to find out. They agreed on a time and place. Eve told Tom to look for a long haired woman in red. In fact, she had short hair and was wearing green. Watching the Carrefour supermarket entrance from a safe distance, she dialed Tom's mobile number to confirm that the young man standing at the door was him. Sure enough, he reached for his phone. He wasn't as

tall as she hoped, but he wasn't bad looking either. She made him wait 20 minutes in the cold night air, while observing his reaction. Was he impatient? Easily angered? When she finally showed up, he didn't appear upset, and even offered to take her out to dinner. She watched him eating his noodles, and found his nervousness charming, the way his cheeks flushed as a long noodle slipped out of his mouth and onto the table. Through their conservations, she found out that she had more experience in relationships than he did. Reflecting back, she coos, "He was like a white piece of paper." Two years later, they were married. While the freedom to choose is certainly liberating and testimony to the changing times, it's not for everyone; Eve and Tom's parents still believe they met through a work event. Eve defends their white lies, "They wouldn't understand. I don't want to give them a heart attack!" Yet she is grateful to have taken matters into her own hands and ventured online. "It was too slow in real life," Eve complains. "With parents matchmaking, too much time was wasted on saving face, saying, 'hmm, not bad', when really there was no interest at all from either side." Whether you're attending an organised social event, a cozy dinner date, or just updating your online profile, put yourself out there this Valentine's Day and see what happens. Just don't forget to follow the tug of your sleeve—it might be your soulmate fidgeting on the other end, wondering why you're late. *Names have been changed to protect the innocent.

For the discerning fashionistas among us, Qingdao, and dare I say anywhere outside of the cosmopolitan meccas of Beijing and Shanghai on mainland China, may appear to be a veritable black hole of style. This newly-opened boutique hotel and restaurant dramatically raises the bar in Qingdao with its unique contemporary opulence – a refreshing twist on the mass-produced luxury of chain institutions. The stripes, fluted hem, and the plush print evoke recent Anna Sui collections, although details such as the collar and buttons maintain an Oriental feel. This costume is just one of the many walking pieces of art to be seen in this already visually stunning edifice.

Before I came to Qingdao and sampled authentic Korean cuisine (!) I thought barbeques were synonymous with food poisoning on a budget. However, Hengbo has its whole 2nd floor devoted to the art of Korean barbeque and wow, its delicate haute cuisine air is a far cry from my preconceptions. The whole experience is a pleasure, from the welcoming chorus at the door bedecked in iridescent floor-sweeping gowns and velvet coats, to the intricately embroidered robes of your table’s personal fuwuyuan. Not to mention the xishoujie are a close contender with Q Bar for Nicest Bathrooms in Qingdao. But we’re supposed to be talking about fashion.

Clashing floral and paisley prints, balloon sleeves, and an abundance of frills – not to mention the pom-poms! – combine into one kitsch explosion. Whether intentional or not, it’s either fabulous originality or endearing novelty. I can’t decide. More of this berry vodka, please!

There are a lot of traditional Chinese two-pieces, complete with mandarin collar and knotted buttons, floating around even the most average of establishments in the city, but something about the wardrobe at Tian Hu Yuan still catches the eye. The blouses are sharp and well-cut, and are paired with simple black column skirts. Perhaps it’s also got something to do with the tasteful dark wood and brick interior, or the intimacy of the surroundings, but understated elegance is the key here.

Get down to Hisense Plaza while it’s still winter just to see this small army of young women as they take command of the carpark traffic. Their professional, no-nonsense attitude (this girl was actually reluctant to have her photograph taken whilst on the job) as they keep vehicular order is rather amusingly contradicted by their outrageous attire. Full-length metallic silver overcoats topped off with Mao Zedong-era PLA hats are possibly the most valiant fashion statement I have ever seen. Words simply cannot describe.

Goji 枸杞 Red Super Berries Arising from the Middle Kingdom, journeying to lands afar, Goji, the red super berry, is doing its part to save the affluent countries from vitamin deficiency. These tiny berries are muscling their way into Western households, where Spirulina, wheat grass, and agave nectar have found their home. One of the biggest crazes in the world of ‘super-foods’, the Goji berry has captivated the nutritional conscience and imagination of many consumers. Availed for its potency of vitamins and nutrients and abundance of antioxidants, many Westerners have added this little red berry, which you see bubbling up from time to time in your hot-pot, to their diets as a key to good health and a redeemer of physical ills. Also referred to as the Wolfberry, the word ‘Goji’ has been taken from the Chinese word gouqi. There are two species of Goji berries: Gouqi from

the South of China and Ningxia Gouqi from the North. Used in Chinese medicine for approximately 1,900 years, the Goji berry has indeed played a role in Chinese life. In fact the berries are associated with Shennong, the legendary Chinese Emperor, who ruled China 5,000 years ago. This ‘Divine Farmer’ is said to have taught people how to cultivate the land so that they wouldn’t have to kill animals and is also said to have discovered the healing properties of various foods – the Goji berry being an example. Super-foods are foods thought to have exceptionally high amounts of nutrients and antioxidants. Blueberries are one well known example of a super-food. Though the term ‘superfood’ is popularly used, dietitians advise that we take any nutritional hype with a grain of salt. So what about the actual nutrition of these said to be super-berries? On the macro-level, Goji berries

are made up of 68% carbohydrates, 12% protein, 10% fiber and 10% fat. On the micro-level, Goji berries contain 11 essential minerals – plus 22 trace minerals, 18 amino acids, 6 essential vitamins, 5 unsaturated fatty acids, and 5 carotenoids. In other words, the berries contain essentials like Calcium, Iron, Zinc, Selenium, Vitamin B and Vitamin C. Therefore the so-called ‘super-food’ seems quite super after all – though of course shouldn’t be a replacement for a balanced diet. Due to the fragile nature of fresh Goji berries, before exportation, the berries are sun dried to varying degrees: sometimes they are dried to the point of becoming almost solid, other times they are dried to the same texture as a raisin. Traditionally in China, Goji berries are cooked in soups, brewed as a tea or soaked in alcohol. Juices and wines can also be made but these are extremely expensive. In the West, Goji berries are being consumed in many new ways. The berries

super-foods are foods thought to have exceptionally high amounts of nutrients and antioxidants

are eaten raw – thus not ruining the nutritional value. They are often added to muesli/ granola bars and smoothies. One increasingly-popular consumption method is to coat them in chocolate; another is making soap. In Chinese medicine Goji berries are said to be sweet and neutral in nature. They reduce fat deposits, especially in the liver; lower blood sugar levels and thus helps diabetics; aid the kidneys; improve eyesight, and enrich yin in the body. Goji berries are also used in Korean, Japanese and Tibetan medicine.

In Western countries, Goji berries are often marketed as ‘Tibetan’ or ‘Himalayan’ in origin – this no doubt adding to the paranormal powers of the little potent pills. However, in fact, they are mostly grown in Ningxia and also Xinjiang. (In Ningxia, Goji berries are such an integral part of life that the people celebrate them in a festival every August during the harvest season.) Another example of false marketing in Western countries is that Goji berries are often said to be organic – when in fact they are grown with pesticides. In health food shops outside of China, Goji berries can be very expensive. Fanatics will pay a lot of money to partake of the berries’ renowned goodness. Sometimes however, the same berries can be found in an Asian supermarket at a much lower price – perhaps Asians in the West have not caught on to the Goji berry craze happening all around them. We in China have the privilege of buying these berries at

a small fraction of what they would cost overseas. The only inconvenience in China is that the Goji berries sold here are usually the rock hard type and can be a little rough to the palate if eaten raw. If you would like to eat raw berries in China, look and feel around, before you pay for a packet of Gojis to check if they are soft enough. If you cannot find any soft berries, just buy the hard ones, cut the packet and leave it open to let the moisture in to soften the berries. The Goji craze has already been raging in the West for a few years now. Of course it remains to be seen whether the hype fizzles out or continue to grow. Will Western vitamin junkies abandon the Goji berry for the next super-food fad? Or might China succumb to the Goji craze, enshrining something that’s already extremely common? Marketing company executives have predicted that by 2013 the market for these morsels will be worth over US$1bn. It seems our little super hero is set to continue his journey around the planet, healing the sick and seeing rising demand - so eat up while you can easily afford it. The expectations are perhaps best expressed by the words on a Goji berry packet in our local stores: While closing your eyes, let ice-cream Slips with water-mouthing moment. Feeling Of silky touch as some cozy jazz …

Jimo, Downhill Skiing in Qingdao’s ‘backyard'

Marcus Murphy

Photos © Marcus Murphy and Dorothea Broednow

If you’ve been day-dreaming about those breezy, summer, Sunday afternoons spent relaxing on the golden beaches of Qingdao with a like-colored, cool beverage in hand (ahem, Tsingtao), rest assured you are not alone. Looking for a fun, adventuresome way to appease these yearnings for a few more months? Why not grab a bus out to Qingdao’s ‘backyard,’ otherwise known as Jimo (即墨), and shred some white slopes with another consistently-colored, yet a bit more loin-warming, bottled beverage in hand (ahem, baijiu). Then make your way to the local hot springs to undo any strain on your legs and gluteals.

(accomplished snowboarders) and rippers (accomplished skiers), just don’t go expecting the Alps, Urals or Rockies and you’re sure to come away with some good laughs, all the while chalking off yet another adventure hidden away in the hills of Qingdao.

Skiing With maybe just a few dustings of snow each winter and the local, boulder-speckled mountains barely reaching over 1,000m in elevation, it might not seem very likely to find enough continuous slopes of carveable powder in this area. However, Tiantai Holiday Hot-Spring Ski Resort (天泰温泉滑 雪场/tiantai wenquan huaxue chang) is found just

a little over an hour northeast of Qingdao's Central Business District. Although it is likely to be more enjoyed by snow bunnies (novice skiers) and buttdraggers (novice snowboarders) than shredders

There are two parallel runs at Tiantai (350m and 240m long) which are both equipped with platterpulls/poma-lifts for reaching the top, while walking is always a fitter and possibly a quicker option. The snow is mostly machine-made, unless you’re lucky enough to make it out following one of Qingdao’s limited significant snowfalls. Facilities inside are rather nice and well-organised, with equipment including skis, snowboards, appropriate footwear and snowsuits all in rather good condition. The season usually opens in December and closes around the end of February, both of which depend on weather conditions. Tiantai receives around a thousand guests a day during the peak season, from January-February.

travel 23 Hot-Springs After a morning of skiing, loosening up your muscles at one of Jimo’s many natural hot-springs is a nice follow-up. The Shandong Peninsula is underlined by a ripple of natural fault lines which act as conduits for groundwater circulating up from much warmer geothermal conditions. As the water surfaces at spots around Jimo, they carry many natural minerals which are then embellished with fresh flowers, milk, honey and even alcohol by local resorts. Kylin Hot Spring Resort is highly recommended (www.qdwenquan.com). Here you can also find mud-baths and even a small pool full of tiny minnow fish ready to nip away at your dead skin. 98元 will award you an hour-and-a-half of bathing time. Their number is 0532-86578888.

When in Jimo

Although China may not be considered a regular stopover for most globetrotting connoisseurs of the cold white powder, it certainly has its aspirations. With over a hundred ski areas in the country, one may be hard-pressed to discern through so many choices to find that idyllic weekend surfing the slopes. For some more impressive areas found within the northeast of China one might opt for Beidahu Skiing Field on Mt. Changbai, just outside of Changchun. Yabuli International Ski Resort near Harbin is China’s largest; with eleven trails, nine lifts and being surrounded by well-forested mountains, it sounds like the perfect side-trip on a visit of the renowned local ice festival. Yabuli is also the training grounds for the Chinese national ski team. Prices: 180元/person/2hours, 260元/person/halfday, or 300元/person/whole day. Prices include all necessary equipment: ski pants, ski jacket, boots and skis. Snowboards are also available at the same rates. Small lockers are available for 10元 per day. There is a 40% discount if you happen to be carrying your own equipment. Transportation: There is a shuttle bus that runs from Jusco which costs 30元 round-trip, if you purchase Tiantai Ski tickets beforehand. The bus price triples if you have not previously purchased ski-tickets. These trips may include stop-overs at hot-springs as well as a place to grab lunch. The number to order bus and ski tickets is 150 9223 1208. For year-round skiing, check out Yingxing Indoor Skiing Park in Shanghai, or Qiaobo Indoor Skiing in Beijing. The more extreme types looking for

likely to be better enjoyed by butt-draggers than rippers the un-groomed slopes and maybe even a firstdecent will want to head south and west to the provinces of Sichuan, Tibet or even Xinjiang. With ski equipment and ticket sales on the rise across the nation and Han Xiaoping handing China its first gold medal in the Winter Olympics of 2006, continue to keep your eyes out for China’s ascension to skiing greatness.

The city of Jimo was a significant township as far back as the ancient Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770256BC), and was the second largest settlement in Shandong at that time. This is quite surprising given that Qingdao was not actually established as an administrative district until the latter nineteenth century. Jimo also played an important role in the Qi State of the Spring and Autumn Period. Qi (齐-another name for Shandong province used today) was the last state of pre-imperial China. Its destruction paved the way for the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC) to centralise the imperial government and bureaucracy that ruled China until 1911CE. There are well-preserved remnants of the Great Wall of Qi found around Jimo, as well as other significant historical artifacts such as calligraphic epigraphs dating back to 511CE. 24 regulars your failures can be crucial to your teaching. It will keep you sane and help you to continue moving forward. Remember that every teacher must make the most of their own style of relating to both the students and the subject matter. Every student comes into your classroom with a different perspective, and it is always hit or miss as to what particular approach is going to reach them. When you multiply these different perspectives by the large numbers that many Chinese classrooms contain, reaching students becomes a game of chance that is closer to gambling than science.

focusing on your successes rather than failures can improve your teaching

Class of your own Hollywood Moments Maybe it’s just me, but I thought teaching would be different. Probably the main thing that shaped my expectations was Hollywood. Every year there seems to be a new movie about the beleaguered teacher with the impossible students who transforms everyone’s lives while the sound track soars. When I first began teaching, one movie that kept coming to mind was

Susan Socrates

To Sir with Love. It stars Sidney Poitier and is heart-warming, well-made, and completely unrealistic. There is a terrific scene where Teacher Poitier gets angry at the students, and suddenly it is clear to him that he’s been doing everything wrong. Okay, I’ve had that moment. What I’ve never had is the Eureka revelation that always follows in movies, where suddenly it is clear exactly how to teach.

It wouldn’t be possible because there is no one way to teach. What is possible is to have a magical moment where one lesson plan goes really well, or one student makes a leap in understanding. When you have such an experience, be sure you are paying close attention. Figure out how it happened, and if at all possible, recreate it. Concentrating on your successes rather than

What will increase the odds in your favor is to keep yourself enthusiastic and to keep trying new and different approaches. I used to feel inadequate when other teachers bragged about their successes. Now I ask a lot of questions and steal their ideas. Never let anyone make you feel that you’re not doing it right just because you’re doing it differently. The students are the ones who will show you how good you really are. The key though is not just to get them to love you, but to be sure they are leaving your classroom knowing more than when they first came in. That spells success in teaching and in your own enjoyment of what you’re doing. The best teachers always seem to share one quality. They have a passion for what they teach. You may not be wild about English itself, but you can be passionate about guiding your students towards a better future. If you can convey just a little bit of Hollywood magic to your classroom through your own enthusiasm, you may just look like a movie star yourself - at least to yourself, and certainly to your students.

Hundred Schools Mengzi: Generations A generation is thirty years, more or less. A millenium is a thousand. The history of China spans five millenia. It is said that 20,000 years ago, the Earth was at the peak of a great ice age. Nearly half of Europe, Asia, and North America were under an enormous sheet of ice (Qingdao was spared). This was the most recent Ice Age. In geologic time, this was a recent event. After all, the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old, and our Solar System is about 4.6 billion years old. The human species became 'human' some 130,000 years ago. This past is nearly impossible to relate to. The time scale is too vast; the events too profound. Dust and particles orbiting the newly-formed sun coalesced, eventually becoming what we know as Earth. It later developed an atmosphere with water, and then some zap came along sparking Life, which eventually evolved into LifeAs-We-Know-It. What would it have been like to live during the Ice Age? Surely we would

a trip to the home of Mengzi, one of China's ancient scholars, provided a clue to just how long history has been

Once again, it's difficult to put it all into perspective. However, a recent trip to the home of Mengzi, one of China's ancient scholars, provided me with a clue to just how long history has been.

have been living in more southern climes. One thing is certain, though: each of us had ancestors alive at that time. There is no way around it. Maybe we all are all descended from one small tribe somewhere.

This matches up closely with descendents of Confucius, who generally fall into the 75th to 77th generation after the Great Sage. Mengzi was born in 372 BCE, 107 years after the death of Confucius. He was a student of Confucius's grandson Zisi (子思), separating him from Confucius by 2 or 3 generations.

All of us humans - from every country on Earth - could be descended from the same family, only not from 500 years ago, but from 130,000 years ago.

In Shandong's Jining City lies the town of Zoucheng, wherein lie the Meng Temple and the Meng family burial grounds. If you've never been, it's a great visit. There is a village called Fucun (凫村) where it is said that 90% of the residents are direct descendents of Mengzi, and if you ask any of them, they all know by how many generations they follow the so-called Second Sage (亚圣). The men I talked to were all in the 70th to 73rd generations.

It adds up. Confucius died in 479 BCE, nearly 2,500 years ago. If we estimate a generation to be 30 years, there would have been be an average of 83.3 generations since then, very close to the generation count of the Kong family today. If that's the count from 2,500 years, let's multiply it by four. This tells us that there were about 333 generations 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age. That's not so many links in the chain! Merely 300 lifetimes could have take us out of the Stone Age to where we are now. All of China's 5,000 years could have taken place within 165 generations. Maybe history happens faster than we think.

Burn After Reading

The Coen brothers followed the Academy-lauded Fargo with The Big Lebowski, a hybrid of slacker comedy and Chandleresque mystery that confused just about everybody at the time. Burn After Reading feels just as incongruous on the heels of No Country for Old Men, but it's safe to say the Cormac McCarthy adaptation was more of a departure, with Burn returning the Coens to black comedy. Consider the plot: low-level CIA analyst Osbourne Cox (John Malkovich) quits in a fit of pique and writes his memoirs, which, in a series of events involving his estranged wife Katie (Tilda Swinton), end up with dim-bulb gym employee Chad (Brad Pitt), who conspires with co-worker Linda (Frances McDormand) to extort Osbourne. Linda, meanwhile, begins an affair with womanising Harry (George Clooney), who's also in a long-term relationship with Katie, who presses Harry to leave his wife so they can finally be together, and dot dot dot. The convoluted relationships, intersecting storylines, and overall farcical atmosphere put Burn After Reading (however loosely) in the Coens' favoured neo-screwball mode, along with broadly-drawn characters defined mostly by their quirks. (Osbourne swears like a sailor; George's idea of a romantic gift provides one of the film's stranger jokes.) But it's a good deal darker than Intolerable Cruelty or even The Ladykillers, which may owe more to its Washington D.C. setting than anything else: if Burn has a villain, it's the callous movers and shakers carefully insulated from the rest of the cast in their sterile CIA offices. This D.C. is so stratified that ordinary peons like Chad and Linda don't even realise the Cold War is over. The Coens haven't exactly become warm and fuzzy humanists, but Burn After Reading shows a weird sort of compassion - and a better-aimed sense of cynicism - beneath the cartoonish nihilism.

Directed by Frank Miller

Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen

The Spirit on its surface looks a lot like the neo-noirs Sin City and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Shot entirely on green screen, Frank Miller is able to crank up the contrast of the picture to create the feel of a black and white comic book. Actors are shot with dramatic lighting to enhance the feel. Dames are dangerous. Villains are outrageous. The Spirit, the hero, fights the villains one step ahead of the incompetent police, wears a fedora and provides a convenient voice-over to fill us in when the plot leaves us clueless. And there’s a box containing something that glows when people open it. Miller co-directed Sin City with Robert Rodriguez, wrote and inked the graphic novel 300 and is best known for growing up Batman in the legendary graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns —creating the mature version of the caped crusader realised on the big screen last year. Beyond directing duties Miller also cameos as a cop quickly decapitated by the arch villain. The Spirit holds a story about love lost, inner demons revealed, reaching for the stars and finding happiness where it’s least expected. To find this story you will need to dig deep. Eva Mendes’ good-girl-gone-wrong leaves a photocopy of her bum in the trash to send a message to the police. In one memorable scene, our hero is tied to a chair beside a dental hygienist’s tool table and menaced by a Frenchaccented sword-wielding belly dancer. The villain, hammed by Samuel L Jackson, high-steps into the room while barking German to stand beneath an enormous swastika. There, he delivers his monologue in English, threatens bodily harm on the hero by dissolving a kitten and then takes a phone call to an associate in Mandarin. If your interest is not piqued yet—don't go out of your way to hunt this one down.

Directed by Mabrouk El Mechri Jean-Claude Van Damme, when he wasn't breaking heads, gave the contradictory impression of a contemplative action hero, or at least he tried to. One can argue that his, ahem, significant acting limitations kept him from pulling it off, but then the real-life Van Damme suffered the same dilemma, infamously declaring "Je suis aware" on French TV with no obvious awareness of how ridiculous he sounded. JCVD takes this to its logical end by casting Van Damme in the most reflective of roles - himself - and sending him back to Brussels, where he stumbles onto a post office holdup and does... not much of anything, really, except sit around and stew while the robbers frame him for the crime. The monotony is broken up by chats with his captors (a confirmed fan among them), glimpses of the outside world (a crowd gathers to cheer on J-C, Dog Day Afternoon-style), and layered flashbacks of Van Damme's life (including a custody battle and the ultimate humiliation: losing a role to Steven Seagal). But JCVD's interest lies less in the plot than in its Russiandoll approach to its star. JCVD deflates his Muscles-fromBrussels image - Van Damme here has the run-down look of a man who's spent far too much time inhabiting the same persona - but it's anyone's guess how much of this is 'JCVD' (the character) or the 'real' Van Damme. Thus the climax: an already-notorious, six-minute monologue in which Van Damme seemingly bares his soul on his divorce, his drug habit, and anything else that pops into his head. It could well be as calculated as anything in Bloodsport, but it doesn't matter, as the sheer gutsiness of Van Damme solioquizing in a French art film moots any questions of motivation, and definitively proves its star doesn't need full splits or gratuitous rear nudity to provide a compulsively watchable display. -Josh Martin

Leg four of the Volvo Ocean Race, from Singapore to Qingdao (2,500 nm), promises to be among the hardest sections of this edition of the race. Before the finish in China, the crews are expected to encounter difficult upwind conditions, freezing temperatures, and boat-breaking sea states caused by strong winds battling fierce currents. The pre-start press conference with the seven skippers in Singapore featured the unusual sight of these highly competitive sailors speaking not of winning the leg, but of how it might be necessary to ease off, to preserve their crew and equipment to ensure safe arrival in Qingdao, China. “We want to come first like everyone else, but we want to get there more than we want to get there first,” said Torben Grael, skipper of the race leading Ericsson 4.

You need to be fast and smart but most important, you need to get there in one piece The others on the stage agreed: “We have to look out for each other," added Ken Read, skipper of PUMA. "We could get into situations where others need our help so it is a challenge for everyone, not just individually but as a fleet. We’ve got to get there. We just have to get there.” “You need to be fast and smart but most important, you need to get there in one piece,” said Ian Walker, who will be sailing the Green Dragon into its home waters (the boat was built in Zhuhai, and claims Qingdao as one of its home ports).

Leg four is nominally one of the medium length legs in the race. But, in reality, the teams are expected to sail much further, as the prevailing conditions would typically make much of the leg an upwind beat. After spending the better part of a month on Sentosa Island in Singapore, it is hard to imagine what lies ahead. The leg will start on Sunday in winds forecast to be near 15 knots and temperatures approaching 30°. The first half of this leg should be straightforward; sail the fastest up the race course, utilising the shifts

to strike off the miles efficiently. Boat speed and weather analysis will be the keys to success here. Then, a tactically difficult decision comes; whether to go inside or outside Taiwan. The current and sea state will be major factors in making this call. The final obstacle will be the winter storms that often sweep off the mainland of China at this time of year. They can bring strong winds, thick clouds and rain, or snow and will doubtless provide a very stern test. The boats will berth at Qingdao's International Yacht Club, site of the 2008 Olympic Sailing Regatta and one of the world's premier sailing facilities. The next race in the in-port series will be held in Qingdao on 7 February (see Events, p 41).

Down to Business China’s New Forex Regulations

Adam Livermore

Due to the significant transformation undergone in the Chinese economy, the State Council of the People’s Republic of China issued the new “Regulations on the Administration of Foreign Exchange of China” effective August 1, 2008. Under these new regulations, more emphasis is placed on the administration of inflow and outflow of foreign exchange. To facilitate implementation of the aforementioned forex regulations, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) recently issued a supplemental circular, Huifa [2008] No. 60, introducing a new mechanism to track the inflow of foreign exchange through trade account items into China. 1. Legal entities, including wholly foreign-owned enterprises (WFOEs) and representative offices (ROs), that previously only had an RMB Basic Account in China are now required to open a specific Foreign Currency (FCY) Settlement Account for collecting proceeds and the conversion of such forex income into RMB. For entities that only have small or sporadic forex inflow and outflow, forex collections and payments can proceed through the banks’ miscellaneous conversion account on behalf of these entities. 2. Based on dialogue with SAFE and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), the criteria for small or sporadic forex inflow and outflow are as follows: The total amount of forex inflow and outflow is less than US$100 per time No more than twice per year 3. The formalities and procedures of opening a special FCY Settlement Account for entities are listed as below:

new regulations emphasise administration of foreign exchange Approval from SAFE to open an FCY Settlement Account (for RO and branch offices only). Since a bank will not open an FCY Settlement Account without SAFE’s approval, entities need to prepare the following documents for SAFE: Application letter Business license (original and copy) Forex IC card Enterprise Code Certificate (original and copy) Other documents required by SAFE

Documents are to be given to the bank only after SAFE approval. To inquire about the need for documentation for the bank, please inquire with the official in-charge for the designated bank. Please note: Based on our discussions with SAFE officials, wholly foreign-owned enterprises do not need to get prior approval from SAFE. The foreign company can directly submit an application to the designated bank to open an FCY Settlement Account. 4. Based on unofficial talks with ICBC officials, a new internal control mechanism system will be firstly established between the SAFE, banks and other Chinese government authorities such as the Ministry of Commerce, the State Administration of Industry and Commerce, tax and customs by in the coming months. The entities will be required to

open FCY Settlement Account very soon after this system is in service. It is expected that more detailed implementation guidelines or circulars may be issued by SAFE and designated banks to cater for actual practices next month. To ensure that incoming foreign currency is deposited in the correct bank account and to avoid an extended wait at SAFE and the bank when opening up an FCY Settlement Account after the deadline is announced, we suggest that all WFOEs and ROs prepare and apply to SAFE and bank now. For detailed information, contact SAFE and your corporate bank. For assistance with these procedures, please contact info@dezshira.com or visit www.dezshira.com.

Qingdao’s Central Business District (CBD) encompasses much of the city’s most valuable real estate, stretching along the coast of Jiaozhou Bay (site of the XXIX Olympic Sailing Regatta in 2008) in either direction from the Municipal Government building and May 4th Square. Hong Kong Road, built in 1997 and named in honour of Hong Kong’s return to Chinese authority in that year, runs through the centre of the area and serves as the major artery of commerce in the city. New Menus

Da Vincian Evolution Eric Blocher Photos © Eric Blocher

One of the many virtues of Da Vinci, located inside the Shangri-La Qingdao, is its eternally evolving menu. Conceived by Chef Coco, these dishes reflect an intricate fusion of locally-popular ingredients with gourmet Italian preparation, a sort of cusine couture that is hard to find in other eateries. REDSTAR recently took an opportunity to sample a selection of new additions for Spring 2009, and lit upon a number of gems worth passing on to our readers. Appetizer •• Grilled Scallops with Porcini Mushroom and Truffled Taleggio Cheese 125元 For this writer, scallops were an acquired taste; raised on chicken, I found it hard at first to adjust to the amazingly rich sensation at the back of my tongue, but once I did, I didn’t think I’d ever find anything creamier in my life. Until, that is, I tasted this plate of scallops served in a sauce of taleggio with an infusion of porcinis. A fantastic appetizer, with morsels enough for 3. Mains •• Red Mullet Fillet in Crust, Orange Sauce and Asparagus Rolls 145元 To the uninitiated, a coiffure Bongiovi gone ginger at a Chinese food fight; but once this delectable Mediterranean fish dances across your palate, bedecked in a gown of tongue-tingling prosciutto wrapped in asparagus, spearfishing takes on a whole new meaning, too. Truly, it tastes even better than it looks. •• Open Ravioli with Qingdao Abalone and Mushroom 125元 When the weather turns cold, local abalones like nothing better than to hook up with the nearest mushrooms available and slip between covers of succulent pasta, garnished with basil and olive oil. Alright, honestly, who knows if they care? I don’t think I’ve dreamed of a classier ravioli in my life. Yes, it’s extremely tasty too.

•• Sliced Piedmont Beef Fillet with Pepper, Thyme, Caramelized Endive and Chanterelle Mushrooms 295元 Is this the end of the world for food journalists? A bed of endives, topped with peppered beef (please please order it rare, if only this once in your life), and a cascade of aromatic mushrooms that seems to be sprouting thyme, this might just be The Dish to Enjoy this Spring, even if it means forsaking all others. The beef and chanterelles melt in your mouth, and the very presence of endives (tasty as they are) should at least help you justify the meal to your cardiologist. Desserts •• Italian Chocolate Pudding Served with Wild Berries 70元 A rich, moist muffin of a brownie, proudly sporting something between a shark’s fin and an iconic sail, appropriate for China’s Host of International Regattas and Epic Races. Gushing raspberries and blueberries, garnished with a dollop of vanilla cream, this is one of a few incredible ways to wrap up one meal that you will surely remember for the rest of the year.

Taco Tuesdays Bienvenidos a TJ’s Eric Blocher Photos © Eric Blocher

James has developed a fantastic kitchen, and done a terrific job of bringing the cooking staff up to speed on the necessary points of the cuisine. The menu itself is an inspiration, with mouthwatering words like fajitas, and carne asada; pollo and, oh yes, guacamole. That is not a mere ‘pork burrito’, there are carnitas afoot here, marinading in salsa verde. There is even a quesidilla, stuffed with grilled chicken and honest-to-goodness cheese. Of course, sour cream is available on request.

So what’s the word on Tuesday? Several of the appetizers, along with most of the burritos, tacos and fajitas, are available on an all-you-can-eat basis for 68元 (beer is also included). At other times, plates range from 20-40元. The menu has great vegetarian options, like chile colorado, and a cheeseburger whose call I will obey when I can make it past the fajitas. It’s worth going anytime, really, and often. But Tuesdays hold a special place in my heart. 162 Jiangxi Lu 江西路162号 8587-8098

But back to the flavour. It’s really, really good. On a recent trip back to California, I was reminded Normally you will hear purists comparing an upstart of two restaurant specials that always represented cafe unfavourably against a beloved taqueria that joyful indulgences on the weekly calendar when no one else will ever go to, or whining about the starvation and boredom loomed - Margarita absence of this or that ingredient. I’ve heard nothing Monday, for the sauce, and Taco Tuesday, for the but praise for the food in the months TJ’s has been flavour. open. These guys know how to bring Mexican dining to the people, a fact that shines as much in Yes, the flavour, that elusive quality that makes nutrition so much fun, that can surprise your senses the subtle uniquenesses (the salsa stands out as or transport you to a place that’s years away in space different in all the right ways) as in the bang-on and time, provided it’s done properly. And at TJ’s on classics. I mean, they even have horchata (spiced rice milk). Jiangxi Lu, Mexican food is done properly. Owner

Freeman Cafe Eric Blocher

Photos © Eric Blocher

What’s happening on Jiangxi Lu? When Soho Bar opened two years ago, it seemed just far enough from Hong Kong Garden’s teeming dark alleyways to have minimal prospects as a regular nighttime destination. But not only has Soho thrived; first Charlie’s arrived to chill things out across the street, then LPG answered with a more colourful party vibe, and finally Freeman has opened its doors as one of the classiest, comfiest, coolest joints in town. The place feels good from every angle, but the view seems to change from one table to the next. For the most part, the moulded walls give it an adobe-like quality, and the dark ceiling and interior structure can make it seem as though you’re enjoying an evening under the stars. But here, a Triumph-clone motorcycle sits next to a cafe style cluster of tables and chairs; there, lamps cast an intimate scholarly light on comfortable booths; at the back of the room, a raised alcove is a fantastic spot for an evening with lots of good company.

Drink prices keep people flocking in. 10元 beers are just the beginning; 10元 tequila shots are getting somewhere, but the grand prize goes to the 25 元 long island iced tea (can you say “长岛冰茶”?). Service is fantastic, with attention paid to each order (I like my bing cha without cola, you see) and delicious snacks like banana chips and yummy peanuts brought gratis. Much about Freeman suggests that the owner knows what he’s doing. Sure enough, Yang Cheng used to have a small bar near Zhongshan Lu that acquired a sizable following of local libertines, many of whom have followed his migration to the eastern side of the city*. Good taste is easy to recognise. Freeman carries the tradition of terrific bars on this tiny stretch of Jiangxi Lu, making the area even more of a sure thing for a great night out. 163 Jiangxi Lu 158 5321-1877

* Rather than wait for a slot in REDSTAR’s monthly Unplugged schedule, Freeman enlisted friends to put on their own open mic soon after opening. The place was packed, and the music was excellent. Few things make us happier than having a wonderful time at someone else’s event!

Still hearing fireworks going off outside? Wait, we’re in for much more! Chunjie kuai le my friends! It’s kind of boring in Qingdao this days... but fair enough, it’s much more colourful at night. You know last Sunday something really touched me. I was looking for entertainment on this particular post-weekend-night-day. It was about 3pm, just after a brunch date, and I was struggling to decide what to do with my special friend. It got me thinking about cool ideas for a chill Sunday for two. A good meal always prepares you for a good day. You don’t want to have a bad start so you should probably eat something light. Sushi is always good, a sandwich at Baeckermeister, maybe some pasta? You decide. I realise that you’re probably in downtown by now, so why not jump in a taxi and bowl a little? Crowne Plaza has the best alleys but the Grand Regency is much cheaper. Other than that, maybe pool? BoBo House, across Yan Er Dao Lu from the Crowne, is also a really nice place.

Two, three games down, ready to go? How about some coffee? Starbucks? Too crowded. SPR, a little dark and same-y. Cafe Kona? Awesome! Stellar cosy interior, kind of makes you forget what time it is. After the refreshment I think you would like to have some fun and excitement. I highly recommend Taidong. I mean, it’s just fun. So many little stores and markets, so many different places to go. If you want to have fun, you should go and play some arcade games on the top floor of WalMart. There is a roller skating rink, and lots of games for two, if you know what I’m talking about. You can have really good time, maybe even win a prize. Most amusements cost around 2元. Time passes quickly there, and you’ll be amazed at how much can you play for a twenty, it’s a lot of fun. The trip to Taidong will probably take you a while, so we are looking at the early evening here. I think that it’s just a great time for dinner. You’re on the town, so treat yourself! You can find Chinese cuisine in any form - it’s totally worth staying away from McDonalds! After a hearty meal, you feel like sitting down to watch something, maybe on a bigger screen than you have at home? There are two major cinemas in Qingdao. MyKal and Wanda. MyKal is not as rich in movies but it’s convenient to get back home if you live closer to the CBD area. If you want to stay in Taidong, Wanda is the place to go, located directly above WalMart. What a great way to come off the weekend, and what a perfect day with a special someone. Chunjie Kuai Le Qingdao!
