Featuring the cream of Beijing's experimental electro scene - there'll be Shanshui Record's soundscape creator AMU, who uses - among other devices - the old Nintendo Gameboy as a musical instrument. Also featuring Howie Lee, bass player of PB33 and graduate of Beijing Recording Arts College, and one more exemplary DJ, as yet TBC.

4 July at Lan Shang Art Gallery, Creative 100 Unique experimental music from a duo comprised of Marqido and Itta, a Japanese noise artist and Korean vocalist. The pair are renowned on the Asian indie scene and have toured Asia and Europe, playing France's In Famous Carousel Festival and Spain's Experimentaclub Festival in 2007. They are currently working on new album, Kitsch, which will be released through Maybe Mars' sub group Maybe Noise later this year.

Yoo too can be A Superstar At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, held in Las Vegas, an invention of unabashed novelty reared its quirky little head - Yoostar, the video equivalent of KTV, will hit shops in the west at the end of summer - perhaps this year's must-have Christmas gift? - and that means it's pretty likely that it'll be here in China in the blink of an eye too. Yoostar was founded in 2007, and the technology they have developed allows the users to star in their favourite movies scenes together with the original actors, and then share their performances online. Content providers roped in so far include Paramount and Universal, MGM and Lion's Gate, along with the NBA who will be allowing users to insert their own commentary on selected scenes. The package includes a studio grade camera and microphone, green screen and computer software compatible with Mac and PC to allow users to put their compositions together and get it online. Some movies so far enlisted include The Godfather, Forrest

Gump and The Terminator. "Who is your daddy, and what does he do?" No that's not right... China's largest Consumer Electronics Exhibition, SINOCES, takes place this month at the Exhibition Centre, Miaoling Lu. See the previous page for dates

Heritage

and Progress In Person with Zhang Yizhi 张逸之 Marcus Murphy with Jennifer Bi

Zhang Yizhi is a calligraphy artist/academic and is one of a few curators/managers at the newly opened Longshore Art Space (蓝上艺术空间) in Creative 100. His modern interpretations of the ancient art form, calligraphy, are part of a larger movement that is helping to keep it alive and bring it to a larger audience. He has been involved with the Qingdao Artists Association for several years, coordinating exhibitions with other local creative personalities and advocating a dynamic understanding of Qingdao's cultural heritage. As REDSTAR consulted the QAA to find a viable venue for the MAX 09 art exhibition in April, Zhang and his colleagues connected with Creative 100 management to give artistic work a marquis

position in that facility. Since then, they have hosted several themed exhibitions and workshops. We talked to Zhang Laoshi about Longshore's role in Qingdao's creative community.

Could you talk a little about your background and how you became involved with Qingdao's art scene? I've been fond of art since primary school, especially painting. I was a traditional calligraphy artist up until 2006, when I began to explore a more modern interpretation of this ancient Chinese art form. It came to me that although the rest of the world may be able to like calligraphy's aesthetic, they really couldn't understand it unless they happened to first have a much deeper understanding of Chinese language and culture.

people now are seriously considering the role that buildings like this one play in Qingdao's cultural identity Check out experimental Korean/Japanese musicians 10 at Longshore Art Space on 3 July! 8pm, 50元. Call 139 0532 3602 for more information.

For example, last year I was invited along with some other Qingdao artists to travel to France to exhibit my art. I had many people tell me the traditional works were very good, but I could see they really didn't take much away from it. But when they saw my modern interpretations, they were much more intrigued and affected, and were even enthusiastic about taking them home! So one of my main goals in art is to help keep alive one of China's most important traditional art forms and show it to the rest of the world while increasing artistic communication between peoples of all backgrounds. It is the realisation of a dream for me, to be a professional artist and to be able to express my feelings in such a way. So what is Longshore Art Space and what are your goals for the space? Well the gallery is a collective, and I work alongside Shen Yuqian (a brilliant oil painter) and Xiao Yang as a manager. Certainly, our main goal is not to make a fortune here, but rather to help develop Qingdao's art scene. This includes helping increase the communication between artists in a way that helps their aesthetics to evolve while also helping them gain the exposure that they deserve. Qingdao has always had a lot of fantastic artists working within traditional genres, but I feel this type of art only has a limited effect on a limited audience. Many of China's traditional art forms are just for the self-interest or self-satisfaction of the artist. We would like to see Qingdao breeding more modern artists whose work may speak to a larger, global audience and have more pertinent and positive effects on the ideas of society as a whole.

What kind of feedback have you seen in the first few months since opening? We are experiencing tremendous interest. There has been great support from artists, local citizens, the media and government. We have school groups come through to learn about aspects of creative production. We hope to be a resource to all kinds of people looking for inspiration, through music and other events that speak to a common interest. Right, your current exhibition is dedicated to the Firetower (望火楼) on Guanxiang Hill that is being renovated. What role can your gallery play in the future of this historic building? This building isn't one of the more popular buildings of Qingdao and many of the people who were here for the opening haven't even seen it. But most Qingdao artists feel a strong connection with this building. Any young artist growing up here will have spent time here painting it. Like the 'Three Trees', next to a lake in Zhongshan Park, it was a sanctuary for artists and a ready subject of creative work. Now only one of those trees remain; similarly, it's sad that the beauty (or let's say, authenticity) of 'Firetower' has been demolished. They will rebuild it, but as an artist, we felt there was nothing in need of renovating and we regret the decision. The exhibition has generated a lot of interest, as people now are seriously considering the role that buildings like this one play in Qingdao's cultural identity. We probably had around 150 people

come by; a large percentage of them were people with the media, so we know that others are hearing about it as well. What do they plan to do with the building? They want to make the area into a walking street. It's not that it's a bad idea, but the project planning leaves a lot to be desired if they are already doing it with such little regard for the priceless cultural resources that will add to whatever use is chosen for the land. We would appreciate it if more local artists and historians could get involved in the process, and such important decisions could be made with broader considerations. What can we expect to see going on at Longshore Art Space for the short term? Well the Firetower show will last for about two weeks here, and then we would like to move it to the street surrounding the Firetower. We want to show the locals what we've been creating, and hopefully show other people how we have been inspired by this structure. Most of our future exhibits will feature local, creative artists using a variety of mediums. Most of the art shown here will be up for sale, but we are unlike other galleries in that we really hope to be picky in our selections, and will host artists that show a sense of creativity in any form.

Conservation and progress Nationwide Preservation

Heritage protection in China is an issue of increasing importance as the nation continues its wild strides forward; even with 5,000 years of history the Middle Kingdom can sometimes seem to take for granted its amazingly diverse past. Fortunately there are groups of activists, consisting of concerned locals and expats alike, taking the reigns on conservation projects - especially in China's number one and two municipal economies. Qingdao, although a relatively new city, has its own players in the struggle to keep development and heritage in balance. One such individual is Ursula Ullman, tour guide, teacher and resident in Qingdao for over 15 years. The boisterous German native is a fountain of knowledge on the antiquated buildings and history of this town, as well as a persistent thorn in the side of anyone putting economic progress at the expense of preservation considerations.

Laying out the law First a little background information - what requirements are there regarding the protection of historical sites in China? There are three stratifications of heritage protection - Municipal, Provincial and State. They are hierarchal levels, meaning for an item to attain state-level protection it must first pass through the lower levels, a process that can take many years. Over thirty State-preserved sites exist in Qingdao's municipality (see accompanying article for the list). They range from bona-fide archaeological relics, such as Sanlihe Village in Jiaozhou, in which tools and pottery have been found dating back to the Stone Age, to the Art Museum at 37 Yushan Road, that was completed in 1940.

culture 13 they do not fall into disrepair, either through too little attention, or too much. Her persistence payed off, for instance, in the revamping of the German Prison. The building was to be signed over to a Hong Kong-based business, but through cooperation with the Government, it has since been converted into a tourist attraction and museum, for the harmonious benefit of Qingdao.

Qingdao by numbers

The preserved sites listed are all buildings or other immobile entities. However, the Heritage Protection Law, passed in October 2002, defines five classifications of items that are eligible for heritage protection - ancient sites, items of literature of historical value defining events or people in history, dynastic artworks and antiques, manuscripts of scientific and historical value and evidence describing the lifestyles of ethnic minorities in China. Items small enough to be easily moved fall into a separate definition, but are afforded a similar three-level stratification to larger objects. But the enactment of such laws - the laws that keep the wrecking balls at bay - is the stumbling block of those individuals and groups interested in preservation.

Over thirty Statepreserved sites exist in Qingdao's municipality ranging from archaeological relics to the Art Museum, completed in 1940

"There is not enough detail and definition when it comes to protecting historical sites," said another Qingdao-based heritage enthusiast, "There are just guidelines, and the archives are pretty limited."

Who owns sites of cultural heritage? Typically, the State takes ownership of a newly discovered relic, though private possession is also commonplace, and upkeep is the responsibility of the owner. On our tour, the building at 8 Hunan Lu, which today is known as the Bureau for the Education Commission of Qingdao, and a Governmentowned property, was undergoing careful renovation. It had come to be renowned for its black walls - not the plan of its architects at the Catholic Mission. This building also happens to be one of the three oldest surviving Europeanstyle buildings in Qingdao, completed in 1899. Its architects later constructed St. Michael's Church, near Zhongshan Lu.

In Hamburg however, there exist various reference materials and photographs, and Ms. Ullman keeps close ties with the universities in Germany. Her knowledge of the former German areas of town is expansive, and she has spent a lot of time lobbying for the maintenance of the German buildings. Like the hutong of Beijing, Qingdao's historic attractions simply do not fit with the breakneck development of China. It takes pressure and persistence to make sure

Just north of the Hunan-Jiangsu Road intersection, we stopped inside the ground of a massive villa, teeming with activity. I poked around nosily, asking the ladies at the door questions about the residents. Yibaige, chabuduo, they said - around a hundred. I am not clear whether this building was State, Provincial or Municipally preserved, but for a site of historic significance it was very endearing to learn that these buildings were still providing sanctuary for locals.

14 culture

Qingdao was originally constructed according to an extensively revised idea of civic planning, one that had not occurred in Europe previously. Constructing a whole city from scratch was a dream for town planners - European urban areas tend to consist of an archaic core surrounded by newer rings of more modern buildings. Here, they built with well-being in mind, by isolating the core industrial and manufacturing areas, such as Sifang and Taidong, where Tsingtao Brewery still stands, from the residential areas such as Badaguan and the Old Town. Areas around the coast are peppered with the military relics of colonial times - the former Iltis Barracks, now the Headquarters of The North China Navy, is the grand building set way back from the road as one approaches Huiquan Square from the east. This building remains almost unaltered, and is one of the most prominent reminders of Qingdao's history, though one cannot pass the gates. Behind it is Qingdao Hill, another military emplacement and vantage point that employed unique methods of construction - the top of the hill was levelled off, rooms cut out and the necessary parts filled in with concrete. Both of these were completed just after the turn of the century, in 1900 and 1902 respectively.

small enough to be easily moved fall into a separate The heritage movement Nationwide, awareness of cultural protection is increasing, a consequence of the substantial expansion in affluence and education, and the socially aware population that follows. The Beijingbased NGO Cultural Heritage Protection has listed surveys on over 1,000 hutong, and outline their mission with the simple statement, the peaceful rise of China requires cultural roots, not just material progress. Meanwhile other groups in Shanghai continue to push, through local media, tours and other grassroots, awareness-raising activities, for the conservation of colonial buildings built during its heyday in the 20s and 30s. These organisations are very well regarded by the Government, who recognise the importance of preserving the nation's heritage. However, the numbers are simply too small. CHP for instance, one of China's most active organisations, consists of just a handful of core members and two hundred

volunteers spread across three target areas - media mobilisation, ethnic culture revitalisation and building protection - and spread across the whole nation. They hold regular events in Beijing to educate journalists and encourage people to sign up. And in Shanghai last month, intrepid fimmakers Charlotte Mikkelborg and Petter Eldin screened an entirely self-funded, 50-minute documentary, Building 173, that focussed on one of Shanghai's old buildings. What of Qingdao though? There is little in the way of similar promotion here, aside from the work of a small clique of Chinese and expatriate enthusiasts and Ms. Ullman. Currently her energy is focussed on another old building in town - a school, built in 1931 that she would love to see restored and turned into a youth hostel. It's right in the centre of Qingdao's business district and it's alarming that it has yet to be pulled apart - it sits next to La Villa on Hong Kong Road, and houses a number of Sichuanese migrant workers, working shifts constructing the building across the road, the IMC Centre, that will be the tallest in the province upon its completion. Perhaps that's why it still stands - the tiny building has found its own way of helping the city develop, but judging by the pace of progress, it is unlikely to last too long.

Hualou Palace Home of complete perfection In 1325, Hualou Palace was built on the northwestern edge of Laoshan. It was during this time, mid-way through the Mongolian controlled Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), that the bourgeoning Quanzhen sect of Daoism became a very influential state ideology of the Chinese empire, as initially, it was directly promoted by the founding Mongol emperor Genghis Khan himself. Most of the Daoist temples at Laoshan were either constructed or embellished during this period.

Marcus Murphy

dinosaurs walked atop it. Some repute that the last remaining, intact, 'old growth' stands of Gingko exist somewhere within the hills of Shandong, and some of the largest individual stems in the world can be found at temples across China as they were

represents longevity and wisdom. One of the most reputable Daoist monks to spend time at Laoshan, Qiu Chuji (also a Shandong native - 1148-1223), endowed Laoshan with the name 鳌山/Aoshan/ Sea-turtle mountain (see poem overleaf) a century before Hualou was constructed. Today, the Quanzhen (Complete Perfection - 全真) sect has many devotees, and a large percentage of the remaining Daoist temples in China were built under its auspices. All of this occurred largely due to the summoning of early Quanzhen disciple Qiu Chujia by Genghis Khan in 1219.

The 2000m2 area of Hualou Palace was constructed in remembrance of an influential monk, Liu Zhijian (刘志坚), after he spent many years as an ascetic in the area. A western-Shandong native, after laying eyes on China's largest sea-side mountain, he concluded his fate was to remain here for eternity (which he has so far accomplished by being buried nearby). It is said that he was once meditating on a cliff when he fell far below into a river and came away without the smallest scratch, and thereafter was deemed an immortal.

Genghis was reigning over much of China when he sent a golden tablet invitation to Qiu, upon which was written that 'To cross a river we make boats and rudders. Likewise we invite sage men, and choose out assistants for keeping the empire in good order' (translation by E. Bretschneider). Zhongnanshan (终南山) near Xian in Shaanxi Province, is considered to be the birthplace of Daoism as Laozi and most of the patriarchs of the Quanzhen sect are said to have nestled away there.

Although Hualou is not as massive as the larger Taiqing Palace to the south, its remoteness lends it a bit more authenticity, as it is mostly void of Coca-Cola umbrellas, bookstores and megaphonewielding tour guides. In the main courtyard of Hualou Palace are a couple of massive, centuries-old Gingko trees, likely planted just after construction. Gingko are considered 'living fossils', as the only remaining species within a certain genus of trees that took root in the earth's soil at the same time

Qiu travelled as far as Iran to meet Genghis on his conquests of Central Asia. When he arrived, the conversation between these two reveals one of history's greatest emperors as an open-minded and compassionate man, acceptive of criticism and eager to preserve the cultures of the many states he had conquered. Genghis Khan created one of the first secular empires that allowed (and in China, encouraged) the practice of Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Daoism, and other religions.

travel 17

The Bard of Laoshan Genghis Khan had likely heard of Qiu, a Shandong native, from his many poems. Almost 40 years before his journey west to meet Genghis, Qiu travelled to Laoshan for the first of three trips. While roaming the boulder-strewn hills, crossing crystal-clear creeks and giving sermons at Taiqing Palace, he recorded scores of short poems as granite epigraphs.

Translation (by Marcus Murphy) On all three edges, the sea ebbs and flows against the mountain city, Below town golden sea turtles roam, above, the heavens extend endlessly. The wind - day and night - rolls out a serene, snowy tide, Deep within the brilliant clouds, flying immortals reside.

After the meeting, Qiu returned to Beijing and his surviving travelogue (Qiu Changchun Zhenren Xiyouji长春真人西游记) reveals brilliant detail of the lands between the Yellow and Aral Sea during this time, as well as loads of advice Qiu bestowed upon Genghis to kill fewer of his subjects and take all things in moderation. When Qiu returned to Beijing, Genghis granted him some of the old imperial grounds for the construction of White Cloud Monastery, which still exist today in Beijing and is home of the National Taoist Religion Association.

Finding the Way You can get to the accessible but expensive Taiqing Palace (70元 for the park entrance and then another 15元 to enter the Palace grounds) by way of a 1.5 hour bus ride (5元) on the 304 from Qingdao University on Xianggang Zhong Lu, or a taxi will get you out there in half the time and run 60-80元. An adventuresome alternative is to hit it up in the morning and then cruise through the rest of the park in one of the many bread-vans (面包车) for the afternoon. They may even do a complete circle of Laoshan and take you home for around 200元.

In July, join Qingdao 山水 Adventures at Hualou Palace. The hiking level is moderate, and should take most of the day. Email murphmarc@gmail.com or call 158-6556-1327 for more information or to get on the email list for additional outdoor events. www.qingdaossadventures.com

Wet and Wild

Great ways to get on (and in) the water Sure, the sea is nice to look at, and it furnishes us with agreeable climate, a distinctive Qingdao cuisine, and occasional round-the-world yacht race stopovers. But what has it done for you lately? It's Summer! Grab the sunscreen, get the kids, and head to the shore. Qingdao is full of ways to enjoy the water, fun for all ages and all levels of excitement. These are some of our favourites.

Rowboats For a leisurely jaunt on the water, pick these up at No. 1 Bathing Beach for 40元 an hour! You can look for the pile of boats; or for those who must be told in words, try to spot the big red sign that says “租 船”. They can hold up to four people, so you may want to pack some barley soda and a picnic basket for the trip. Choose your company carefully, in case you do end up stranded on a deserted island.

Jet Ski Tours No. 1 Bathing Beach is again the best place to meet these tours, which will take you beyond the safety of the shark nets and into a new perspective of favourite local destinations like Zhanqiao Pier and Huashi Villa. Hold on tight! Starting at 160元.

Tirion Windsurfing Lessons It's really hard to keep these sails up, but it'll look really cool when you get the hang of it! Qingdao is especially fond of windsurfing, as the site where China's Yin Jian brought home her country's first Olympic Sailing gold medal in 2008. Get lessons from an expert instructor at the Sailing Club (1953), the big white building at the east end of No. 1 Bathing Beach. 80元 / hour to rent the equipment, and ask about private and group lessons. They also offer a wide range of other vessels. Call Loik at 132 0637-3529.

A state-of-the-art sailing vessel, built in China's Sailing City. Holding up to 7 passengers, the Tirion is a great way to experience firsthand the potential thrills of Olympic-style Jiaozhou Bay sailing... without the frustration of trying to finish anything ahead of anyone else. Never sailed before? No problem! For your leisure, the boat comes with a captain and motor. Just bring good company, and maybe some snacks. 1000元 / 3 hours; 1500元 / 6 hours; 1800元 / 8 hours. Optimists are also available for younger sailors. Call Vicky at 136 0896-8946 for more information.

Fishing

Choose your company carefully, in case you do end up stranded on a desert island

It is an amazing feeling to pull a fish out of the water, and if you're up for the responsibility of gutting and grilling, well... it's a character-building experience. Your efforts will be rewarded with a meal that you have prepared from start to finish, in terrific company!

Seaside libations After a day of rowing, riding, fishing, entertaining or whatever else you've done, there's nothing like sticking around by the ocean for a beer, juice, or fresh water. Here are a few of our favourite places to relax after a hard day's playing in the sand. 1953 Sailing Club In fact, you could get the party started while your friends are doing their windsurfing (or whatever else they do!). By most accounts, 1953 is the oldest Sailing Club in Asia, and the new facility serves Chinese and Western food alongside great beers and other cocktails, in a setting that is relaxed for an informal occasion or ideal for watching the constellations of city lights with a special someone. 1953 is located in the newly constructed white building just east of No. 1 Bathing Beach, on Nanhai Lu. 8090-5788

The fishing group either stays on shore or heads out on traditional Qingdao-style fishing boats, depending on the weather and the group. For fishing boats, a 100元 donation is requested in order to help cover transportation and materials. This is certainly one of the coolest things going on in the Huangdao Kaifaqu during the summer. Group leader KiKi tries rallies the troops by 8am every Saturday at Starbucks inside the Kaifaqu Jusco. Hurry if you don't want to miss the boat (or call her her number is 156 1532-5479).

Qingdao Polar Ocean World An entertaining, if somewhat expensive, option for families with small children,

this complex of animal viewing space and performances and restaurants is one way to experience the ocean without getting wet. For more information, or to inquire about tickets, please call 8099-9777.

The Beach House Just across from the west end of No. 1 Bathing Beach, the Beach House is a welcome newcomer for cocktails, Italian sodas, and a range of tasty treats from Thai soup to chocolate fondue. They also do city tours, and occasionally host live music in the downstairs Pearl S. Buck Cafe. Give it a shot! At the corner of Wendeng Lu and Nanhai Lu (文登路1号). 8289-3999 Cafe Roland The service and food have never been stellar, but the beer is usually cold, the juice is commendable, and the atmosphere is fantastic, a villa and beer garden looking out over No. 3 Bathing Beach and a distant Qingdao skyline. With this kind of backdrop, it's easy to impress. Call ahead, as the garden might be booked out for a wedding, and that's no fun. 9 Taipingjiao Er Lu. 8387-5734 Dozo There's one in Hisense Plaza, too, but what allyou-can-eat Asian fusion bonanza is complete without a tank of live (not to be eaten!) sharks underneath the entryway? The branch at Polar Ocean World really has it all. Beer and sake are included in the meal if you so choose, the food is great, the experience is unlike any other. Come hungry.

Underground Fashion Mining Longshan Lu Market Whether it's the local availability of fabrics and (sometimes astonishing) other materials for use in frocks and trousers, or the exposure to more fashion-forward Korean and Japanese cultures, or a voracious appetite for trying things on and bargaining, the city has a number of markets of box-size shops so packed with colours, shapes and textures that they can become virtually indistinguishable for all their uniqueness.

REDSTAR

dress attempts, we did find two shops selling their own products that seemed to be going somewhere. We asked them what they're up to. Carp (menswear) 'Jiang' District, Longshan Lu Underground Market 136 5642-9297

Such a place is Longshan Lu Underground Market. Tucked away under Signal Hill, near the Qingdao Guest House in Old Town, this warren of former military bunkers has been subdivided into tiny shops where textile trading companies of various qualities and styles from around the world vie for the attention of the local shopper. REDSTAR has been hearing for years that Longshan Lu is unique among these 'export streets' and 'fashion business districts' for its prevalence of designer-run outlets, representing the cream of baundant local fasion talent. On a recent afternoon visit to Longshan Lu, in the midst of sifting through the aspiring urban wear gamechangers and tonnes of disappointingly frumpy

Materials "In this season, we are promoting cotton and flax, which are comfortable and environmentally responsible."

Target market "Middle- and upperclass young men, including Japanese, Koreans and foreign students, who have a highly developed fashion sense." Sales outlook "The Qingdao market is a little bit hard for us by now, because young men here aren't so fashion conscious. The city has a lot of potential, especially with so many Koreans and Japanese, and young guys are also starting to express themselves through fashion." Inspiration "Our fashion design is called Peacock. British designer Edwin Hardy Amies started the Peacock Revolution in 1960s, with a dramatic change in menswear. For the past 150 years, clothing for men had been plain and dark in appearance. "In 2009 Qingdao fashion week, our designs from this year fashion show are mainly birds, trees, and forest which can emphasise environmental protection. Men also can wear colourful clothing."

Showtime (women's clothing and accessories) 'New' District, Longshan Lu Underground Market 139 6428-7957 Market "We design 40% of the clothing in the shop, some according to our clients' requirements. Our target group is women aged 26-48, white collar professionals. Most are foreigners and women who are working in media." Sales outlook "The financial crisis hasn't really impacted women's fashion consumption in our area. Young women are more sensitive to styles than materials, so they may choose low-middle price which are cheaper to make but focus more on seasonal fashion trends. Women over 30 years old tend more to prefer clothing material, which we also provide." Materials "For women’s clothing, we like to use 100% silk and silk fabric." Local Industry "Qingdao's fashion industry is just getting warmed up. There are few local Qingdao fashion designers, and not much new happening yet. But I studied fashion in Japan, and more sensibilities are coming over from that area and from Korea."

Class of Your Own Ping Pong English

Susan Socrates

In China you’ll discover two obsessions: playing ping pong and learning English. In my classroom, they make a winning combination. First I tell students how learning English is different from other subjects. While some things can be learned through reading and memorisation, English is a skill requiring practice, much like learning to play ping pong. To make the Olympic team, would you just read books about ping pong? Would you sit and watch other people play? Would you only play in the occasional tournament?

I say something to you and you say something back to me

My students answer, “Of course not!” Well, the same is true for English. To really learn it, you cannot just read about it, listen to other people speak it, or use it only in class. You must practice. Every day. With other people. If you want to be a champion English speaker, you must practice as if you were going to the Olympics. Don’t let your students get discouraged by slow progress. Keep their eyes on the prize of that final championship goal, such as a better job or studying abroad. Now show them how muscles have memory. Our muscles remember how to move our arms without our having to think about it. When we learn ping pong, however, the coach will show us how to serve correctly. It may feel strange, and not how you would normally move your arm. But you keep practicing the way you were taught. You practice so often that even when you’re really nervous, with millions of people watching you on TV, you’ll make the serve. You’ll hit the ball correctly because your muscles have grown strong and will remember

how to deliver an ace. During workouts, you may have to slow down, concentrating on your lips in order to form the words correctly. With practice, proper pronunciation will become automatic and your words will flow without hesitation.

differentiates a conversation from a memorised presentation. In the beginning we can go slowly. We may drop the ball and start again often. But we see how long we can keep the game going, 'playing' for longer periods each time. By playing often we’ll learn to speak more confidently, and with greater accuracy.

Want to add some spin to your conversation? As with ping pong, it takes more than one person to play. I hit the ball to you and you hit the ball back to me. I say something to you and you say something back to me. The back and forth is what

Grammar is like knowing the rules of play. Memorising a list will slow down your game. Picking up the rules as you practice is easy. You’ll want to know them; but while rules stay the same, every game is different.

You can build some strength by hitting balls against a wall, but you’re going to have to find a partner to develop any skill with the game. By yourself, errors go unnoticed. With a partner, if they can’t understand you, they can help you improve your technique. Most importantly, like playing ping pong with friends, speaking English together is fun!

Hundred Schools Apathy, or the Devil? contains the totality of everything, both Good, Evil, and everything in between. The song's tour through history goes through humanity's greatest blunders, so unthinkable, and yet so completely human. We know that humanity has issues controlling itself. "I watched with glee while your kings and queens, fought for ten decades for the gods they made." The classic Rolling Stones tune "Sympathy for the Devil" reflects keen understanding of Daoist principles. Was it intentional or coincidental? It was neither. It reflects one society's view of the universe. In speaking through his character Lucifer, lyricist/ singer Mick Jagger speaks of playing a part in some of history's most ghastly events. "I stuck around St. Petersburg when I saw it was time for a change/ I killed the Tzar and his ministers. Anastasia screamed in vain." This character seemed to be a guiding force in the events. We hear of blitzkrieg, massacres, the crucifixion of Christ, et cetera, the very Devil himself sneakily influencing human history. Traditional Western notions place a Devil against a glorious counterpart, God. But in Chinese thinking, the two forces, naturally opposed to each other, actually appear together, within yin and yang. The Dao

Just as natural disasters like earthquakes and floods inevitably occur, a Daoist might say that good and evil would naturally fluctuate back and forth. Bad times would be inevitable, part of Nature's course. This runs contrary to conventional thinking, which sees the Dao as being a strictly benign force, and of the Way as being trite; letting nothing bother you, chilling out by a stream, as in the cliche phrase, 'go with the flow.' But this outlook misses the (Daoist) point. The Dao contains the totality of everything, being "undifferentiated and complete, being born before Heaven and Earth" (DaoDejing, Ch. 25). Even the bad forces flow from the Dao. We are reminded that "Heaven and Earth have no mercy/ They regard the 10,000 myriad things as [meaningless]" (DaoDeJing, Ch. 5). But if you notice, things that flow all tend to follow the same laws of fluid motion. If so, Jagger's look at the course of evil weaving in and out of

Gar Kerbel (戴岭)

human history would be a look at a notable aspect of the Dao. And yet, we need look for a moment at an actual Daoist. Imagine when the events in the song occurred. Recognizing danger, where would this Daoist have been? Far away, probably. While the revolutions were occurring, he was probably chilling out by a stream! This song so vividly expresses the workings of the world. On the one hand, we see Jagger places the Devil himself pulling the strings. On the other hand, we could go Daoist and say that it's just the rise and fall of fortune in the natural course of things.

Bad times would be inevitable, part of Nature's course

26 reviews Polo After Marco Polo left millions of his booted footsteps in the soil of the middle-east, central Asia and Mongol-ruled China, he dictated his adventures in his influential book, Travels. Veteran biographer Laurence Bergreen's uneven effort traces and evaluates the sojourner-merchants recounted experiences.

Rough Cut

Directed by Jang Hun Rough Cut arrived in Korean theaters with questionable credentials: A first-time director and his mentor/producer/ co-writer Kim Ki-duk - a festival regular with fare like 3-Iron and Time, but generally dismissed by local audiences. It became an unexpected hit and is now making the rounds abroad, with a stop at last month's Shanghai International Film Festival. The film shows only faint traces of Kim's handiwork, in a plot that channels his clunky metaphysics into arthouseinflected action. Actor Soo-Ta (Kang Ji-Hwan), who has sent multiple co-stars packing with his hair-trigger temper, meets gangster and film buff Gang-Pae (So Ji-Sub) at a hostess club. The first meeting doesn't go well - Gang-Pae spars with Soo-Ta's co-worker and slams his head into a wall - but faced with the risk of shutdown, Soo-Ta invites Gang-Pae to star opposite him. Gang-Pae agrees but insists on unsimulated fight scenes, which increase in brutality as the film goes on. The themes are familiar from countless other 'behindthe-scenes' dramas: The thin line between actor and role, filmmaking's mental and physical toll, and the double lives of movie stars (Gang-Pae must balance acting with his 'day job'; Soo-Ta has regular assignations with his girlfriend but won't be seen in public with her). Rough Cut's conventionally effective story doesn't deliver any shattering new insights on these fronts, but So's unreadable Gang-Pae lessens the predictability. His affected blankness recalls that of Kim Ki-Duk's own protagonists, here deployed to suspenseful ends. But the conflation of movie violence with the 'real' kind lapses into moralism at the end, an unconvincing mea culpa from a film eager to show off well-choreographed pugilism. And Jang's preference for antiseptic interiors and minimal, low-ambience sound design does no favours to the subject matter. Rough Cut might well have fared better with the unabashedly pulpy sensibility of, say, Ryu SeungWan: Less arthouse, more grindhouse. -Josh Martin

Parking

Directed by Chung Monghong Parking begins, like any comedy of errors, with a simple problem that quickly multiplies: Chen Mo (Chang Chen) stops to buy a cake and spends most of the night struggling to retrieve his car from inconsiderate doubleparkers. This minimal premise could've developed into a Taiwanese Falling Down, and there are moments when Parking inclines in that direction. But it doesn't work out that way. Over the next few hours, Chen weaves in and out of a half-dozen-odd subplots, all with residents of the surrounding Taipei neighborhood. A baffling visit with an elderly couple and their grandchild is mined for sentimentality, a friendly barber (Jack Kao) is exposed as a former gangster, an ex-tailor from Hong Kong (Chapman To) has a run-in with his creditors, and Chen butts heads with pimps in the apartment upstairs. Near the end, he even detours into an abbreviated domestic melodrama, with Kwai Lunmei as the wife who motivates the whole adventure. Chung's script coalesces well, although the mishmash of genres and storylines is more predictable than one might hope for - you'll guess well in advance which loose ends will be tied up before the credits roll. Chung's background in TV commercials (which prize narrative economy) might account for the schizophrenic plot, but there's a singular vision at work here, both formally (Chung also did the cinematography) and thematically. In this film, at least, Taipei shuts down at about 6 p.m. and is regarded by outsiders (the tailor, a hapless mainland prostitute) as little more than an unpleasant way station. Meanwhile, the locals reminisce about better times (Kao's wistful hoodlum) and get through the day with bullheaded aggression (everyone else). It doesn't sound fun, but Chung's everything-goes style - design a situation, film it, plow ahead to the next one - turns up plenty of small pleasures. -Josh Martin

Bergreen justifiably lionises Polo's globe-trotting vision and bravery in surmounting obstacles, e.g the freezing Pamir highlands, where fires would barely catch. Yes, Polo has storytelling moxie, penning that Kublai Khan’s palace walls, “Are all covered with gold and with silver, and there are portrayed dragons and beasts and birds....” Let's praise Bergreen’s assiduous research. As iron-legged as his subject, he went from the twisty canals of bustling Venice, Polo's home town, to the boundless, neglected Mongolian grasslands, living in a tent. Historicaly minded Bergreen also provides a knowing wider look at Venitian society and mercantilism, Mongol ways and Polo’s life. Colourful paintings capturing these themes enliven Bergreen's text. Bergreen asserts, half correctly, that trade animates Western interest in China today. Yes, we are all heirs to business savvy Polo. But today, Beijing's partners seek its assistance on complex climate, security and human rights issues, which generates conflict and accord. Foreigners aspiring to emulate Polo and line their robes with jewels should heed some lessons. Their hero was a survivor and self-enricher partly because he mastered local languages and kept detailed notes. As for Polo's credibility, he alienates the discerning reader as often as he convinces. Bergreen admits that the observer became a convert who provides a 'fairytale‘ account of Mongol brutality, habitually luridly praises the banal and positions himself into heroic battle victories. Bergreen wrongly mimics this boosterism in his overly enthralled assesment of a semi-reliable narrator. The Travels, Bergreen correctly notes, hugely shaped Western thinking about China, partly because so few Occidentals experienced the Middle Kingdom. Now a tide of China-related books swooshes upon the intellectual shore. As with Polo's account, one must read widely and carefully, recalling that honest praise and criticism are the highest forms of respect. -Victor Fic vfic@hotmail.com

Branded! Celebs doing product lines It seems a little bit of fame goes a long way, celebrities using their names to launch products which in turn make them lots of cash. We have all heard of ‘Kate’ by Kate Moss, a perfume aimed at ‘wannabe just like her’ teenagers. Now we have ‘Colleen’ the scent, by the wife of Manchester United and England footballer Wayne Rooney and of course ‘Princess’ by Britney Spears which is a best seller in the drug stores this summer. Justin Timberlake has recently turned his hand at producing a tequila called ‘901’ , so named because '901 is that time of night when you evening is ending, but your night is just beginning'. It seems a strange choice of career change for

Paul Rey-Burns

Justin but as everything he touches turns to gold, I am sure ‘901’ will be drunk in truck loads. Next up is Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher who has launched a new fashion label because, “He can't find anything he wants to wear in the shops.” The singer is the inspiration behind an, "Up-front, straight talking, classic clothing range" called ‘Pretty Green’ which includes parkas, T-shirts, denim and footwear launched last month. The English rocker launched ‘Pretty Green’ in Tokyo and according to a press release, the collection will be sold initially via the www.prettygreen. com website, while a 'premium wholesale collection' will be sold

I’m not here to rip anyone off, and I’m not doing it for the money either internationally soon after. A special, limited-edition capsule collection will be available exclusively in Japan. The site describes the line as a classic range owned, founded and designed by Gallagher. “Clothes and music are my passion. I’m not here to rip anyone off, and I’m not doing it for the money either. I’m doing it cuz there’s a lack of stuff out there of the

things I would wear,” he said in a statement. According to the site, the collection promises to encapsulate, “The style and swagger of the most iconic frontman of our generation.” What’s on the LC iPod this month? Kasabian's new one, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum

Inside and Out Business tax in China

Jessica Hou and Irene Zhong

Business tax is a tax payable against turnover by all enterprises and individuals undertaking the following business activities: providing taxable services, including communication, transport, construction, finance and insurance, telecoms, culture, entertainment and service industries; transferring the provision of intangible assets; and selling immovable properties.

under the new rules, the definition of taxable service subject to business tax has been expanded

The basic formula is: Tax payable = turnover * tax rate The Ministry of Finance and State Administration of Taxation jointly issued the revised Implementation Rules for Provisional Business Tax Regulations on December 15, 2008, for the amended Provisional Business Tax Regulations which were issued by the State Council on November 10, 2008. The revised Implementation Rules which took effect January 1, 2009, contain some fundamental changes to the taxing principals of the business tax regulations. Under the old rules, the service provider is only liable to business tax in China if the taxable service is rendered within China. Thus when the foreign enterprise provided services to a Chinese client and such services were conducted outside of China, the foreign enterprise would not be subject to business tax in China. However, under the new rules, the definition of taxable service subject to business tax has been expanded to include services performed where either the service provider or the service recipient is located in China, without regard to where the service is actually being rendered. As long as the service provider or service recipient is located in China, the service will be taxable for

business tax purposes, regardless of whether services are rendered onshore or offshore. The only exclusion is where both the service provider and service recipient are located outside China. Financial institutions used to be subject to business tax on the trading of foreign exchange, marketable securities, and futures, but non-financial institutions and individuals were not. However, under the new regime, the trading of foreign currency, marketable securities, non commodity futures and other financial commodities by

any tax payer is subject to business tax. Formerly, deemed sales applied only to a company transferring immovable property to other parties without any consideration, however under the new rule, deemed sales apply to either a company or an individual transferring immovable property or land use rights to other companies or individuals without any consideration. The change in China’s business tax rules have increased the amount of tax paid by multinational service

providers with clients in China, therefore service providers need to consider modifying billing arrangement with Chinese clients by charging business tax from Chinese clients or arranging for the overseas office to bill and collect the payment from their Chinese clients' international affiliates if possible as well as separating the billing or invoices of the international office and the China office to minimise the impact of double business tax charged. Crystal Lotus

No animals were harmed... If you happen to miss the English-language signs on the outer door, your first impression of Crystal Lotus will probably be the soothing atmosphere, adorned with antiques and soft spot lighting, fountains, gates and other characteristics that call to mind an idyllic Chinese courtyard at dusk. The menu is an impressive tome, uncluttered but informative, with photographs that seem to present the cuisine with an incontrovertible elegance. My first time in, I thought I was in an even-classier version of Lao Zhuan Cun. But as I read the menu and sipped on a refreshing glass of prune punch, something about the written descriptions didn't sit right with me.

Vegetarian shark's fin (88元)? Braised vegetarian sea cucumber?

restaurant claims allows the natural flavours to come forward. No complaints here!

Fair enough, I thought, the random block product that always finds its way into my fried rice isn't technically 'rou' either. But - vegetarian steak on iron skillet? Are you vegetarian or are you a steak?!

As an omnivore, I found the concept to be carried out well, boosted further by the memorable ambience and service. Vegetarians who don't care for taste and texture of flesh will find plenty of mushrooms, eggs and other, more traditional options, and can still take comfort knowing that there won't be any little bits of minced pork in their eggplant.

Vegetarian, it turns out. The 'fish', 'steak', 'chicken', 'pork', 'shark's fin' - all are carefully crafted for flavour and texture that evokes the real thing. As one might expect, bean curd is the key ingredient, proving here that tofu really can be made to taste like anything. The concept is derived (and some of the faux meats sourced) from famous fine food companies in Beijing and Taiwan that are run by monks. While we stayed mostly within the orthodox territory of beef and fish, overall opinions ranged from 'just kind of novel' to 'downright impressive'. The appetiser 'sushi hand rolls' (20元) were full of flavour, using seaweed of a high standard and what could only be candied walnuts, to terrific effect. All of the dishes were relatively light in salt and aromatics (like shallots and garlic), which the

A table of four (without alcohol) can reasonably expect to spend 250元. What I still don't understand is why anyone would want all the flavour and texture of braised sea cucumber, without any of it's purported positive effects on the body. 清水莲素膳茗坊 6 Yanerdao Lu 8077-9116

Luigi's To enjoy a perfect thin-crust pizza (and salad? or pasta?) in a comfortable booth, in full view of an ongoing pie-throwing operation seems only appropriate in a place bearing such a classic name. The pastas taste like one might imagine 'Luigi's pastas' would taste, and the atmosphere is about as informal and welcoming as one might imagine Luigi's Pizzeria would be. Considering there was no such restaurant two months ago, it's perfectly reasonable to suspect that Luigi's sprung fully-formed out of the fertile Jusco foundation just as effortlessly as ordering a 12" Luigi's Special. Not so. In fact, Qingdao-native Luigi opened his first pizza restaurant in 2002, a shack in a quarry near Shilaoren that has likely since been overbuilt by multi-million yuan condominiums. Luigi had a selfbuilt clay pizza oven, a few tables, and Christmas

tree lights for decoration. The beverage? Vodka shots. If customers' affection could be measured in renminbi, the man might have retired after a single summer. As it is, he has partnered occasionally and temporarily with established eateries around the CBD, sharing and perfecting his craft, until this most recent incarnation inside Jusco (next to McDonald's). A 12" pie weighs in at 50-60 元, and the tasty crust is light enough for the doughier among us to make it a meal (or, for the sensible solo diner, a 9" is also available). Pastas and salads come is respectable portions. Two people will be well-served with a pizza, another dish, and drinks for under 100元.

opolis Massive Malaysian Metr Malaysian mega-corporation Sime Darby is to begin construction on a 700km² area in Weifang, the kite capital of China. Said to be one of the largest single property developments done by a foreign firm in the Middle Kingdom, the project was described as, "Massive," and of, "Great potential for many Malaysian companies," by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib, who made his first official visit to China last month. "The milestone iconic project would also involve many other local companies," said Malaysia's Star newspaper, on 6 June. Part of the deal includes clauses for Chinese firms to participate in the development of large scale infrastructure projects taking place in and around Malaysia, including railway development and the Mengkuang Dam project in Penang. Sime Darby are involved in a plethora of industries including plantation and property development, motor manufacturing and healthcare as well as energy and utilities. Some funding will also come from China's investment in an emergency fund for ASEAN states that was set up in May as a way to soften the severity of the economic crisis on the region. Plans For New Airport C

Plans to construct a second airport in Qingdao were completed by Qingdao Liuting International Airport Group last month. The plans outline a new airport that will include an international and domestic transfer centre, and is intended to become the regional hub for air traffic in Shandong Province. Qingdao's current airport is expected to reach full capacity of 16 million passengers per year by 2015. The site plan is now subject to Government approval. centreforaviation.com

Coming Together 2009 - A very busy year for mergers and acquisitions in China Weichai Holdings Group, Shandong Construction Machinery Group and Shandong Auto Industrial Group will merge to form an auto parts maker that will target 100 billion yuan in sales by 2012, up from current cumulative sales of 40 billion yuan. Weichai Holdings is the biggest shareholder in Weichai Power, one of China's biggest heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturers. The new venture will be called Shandong Heavy Industry Group Co. There was also talk in early June of a merger between two ailing state owned airlines, Shanghai Airlines and China Eastern. Both carriers are currently operating at a loss, but a merger would see them control half of Shanghai's market share, according to China Briefing. Shandong Gold Group's Mining Company Ltd. announced plans to invest 515.9 million yuan in a 70% stake of Guilaizhuang Gold Mine, Linyi City. Shandong Gold has comparative advantages in technology and hopes to reduce production costs at the mine. The group has also received approval to issue 1 billion yuan in corporate bonds to domestic investors. Shandong has been China's largest gold-producing province for over 30 years, and accounted for 21% of China's total output last year. Beijing instituted a policy in March to merge many of China's fragmented industrial companies into much larger entities in order to make them more competitive internationally. Nine industries were cited as requiring more cooperation between groups - mining, media, electrical power, real estate, transport and logistics, finance and insurance, steel and cement, machinery manufacture and food and beverage.
