What are some cre ative ways you've made extra money in the past? I've withdrawn mo ney using a stolen ATM card, ran scams in college to collect and resell used textbooks, and gathe red mushrooms to sell to university students. Wow, th anks for sharing. Anything else? In a previous econom ic downturn, I read about some guys who, after being lai d off from their offi ce jobs, started their own business scooping poop fro m people's lawns. Eventually, they en ded up with a craplo ad of customers and made a ton of money. Plus, they go t to work outside all day. Nice! Wish I'd thought of that.

What's your advice for getting by in tough times? I would limit activities like eating out and singing karaoke with friends to just once or twice a week. It's always better to start saving money before emergencies; these current financial problems might not be resolved this year or possibly even next. It might be a good idea to stick with your current job, as there may be fewer opportunities in the near future. Or if you don't already have a good job, take advantage of the time to improve your knowledge and skill set so that when the economy does improve, you'll be in a better position to find the job you want.

How has the global economic situation affected you? I worry about my friends and family back home. Being so far way, it's hard to know what's going on in the local community. My business is making handmade leather handbags, and there's been a real drop in sales. There's still lots of traffic to my site, www.gogovivi.com, but fewer purchases. How did you get into this? I was actually a public health geneticist back in the States, and was having trouble adjusting to being an expat wife and losing that part of my identity. I've always been a repressed artist. While science was intellectually satisfying, it didn't scratch my creative itch in any way.

Has the economic downturn influenced your work? I work in the shipping container industry, and company-wise we plan to save money and weather the storm. Have you ever worked any odd jobs to make more money? Yes. I worked at a factory that made diapers for babies and grown-ups. I was 23, in the middle of getting my master's degree and needed extra money. I did night shifts, keeping several hundred-metre-long machines running, filling in raw materials and packing diapers. They paid really well and even asked me to stay, but I decided to finish my degree. Apparently, I had a real talent for diaper manufacturing.

have we got news for you “The increased expenditure on infrastructure will certainly contribute to China’s productivity growth and improve its long-term competitiveness, allowing it to pull away from its Asian neighbors who are much more constrained — by higher levels of budget deficits and public debt — in their ability to unleash a fiscal stimulus,” - Eswar Prasad, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Medical misnomers An internet user exposed 12 actors claiming to be medical experts in television commercials. The broadcasts went out on channels in Shandong province, in late January. Ensuing outrage prompted the government to ban non-medical staff from playing experts in future commercials, with parent companies bearing the financial risks in the event of future negligence.

Shandong province has been earmarked for a major upheaval of rail networks and power generation facilities as the first wave of spending from China's massive 4 trillion yuan stimulus package is disclosed.
Railway infrastructure In a seven year plan, 14 high-speed, intra-province railway lines will be either built or rebuilt, with a total length of around 3,800km. This will include regular and double-track railways, along with electric rail lines, connecting 17 cities. The new infrastructure will slash journey times by as much as 6.5 hours, in the case of the direct line from Jinan to Yantai (currently 8 hours). Jiang Daming, Governor of Shandong said to China Daily, "A modern transport system has been required in Shandong for a long time. The shoddy railway transport

has been an unnecessary burden on the highway network."
Power generation As a result of the decrease in economic activity, a decrease in the demand for energy is expected this year. Taking advantage of this slump, there will be a drive to cut down operations in some technologically outdated facilities such as thermal/coal power plants and oil refineries, while accelerating the development of longer term solutions such as nuclear and renewable energy sources.
Construction of a nuclear power facility in Shandong is to begin later this year. The plant will be built in Haiyang City, about 150km northeast of Qingdao, in Yantai Prefecture. One of three proposed, the facilities will have a combined power generation capability of 8.4GW by the end of the year, with the Haiyang facility becoming completely operational in 2014. The other two facilities will be built in Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces.

"It was impossible for me not to be tempted when facing an offer from such a top European club," Zhou said to sina.com. The whole episode has led to the 23-year-old playmaker being dubbed 'China's Bosman', a reference to Belgian Jean-Marc Bosman, whose move from RFC Liege to Dunkerque in 1990 resulted in a European Court ruling that barred payment of transfer fees for players out of contract. MC Shazhou
New recording studio
Plucky native MC Shazhou talks to REDSTAR about hip hop, the good ol' days and his brand-new DIY recording studio in Sifang. Shazhou Studios he says, is going to help bring Qingdao's musicians to prominence in their own town, instead of forcing them to seek the limelight in China's bigger metropolises. It's a modest place right now, but the cocky and confident MC has big plans in mind for local music. He's spent the two years following the release of his second album whetting appetites for hip hop music in Qingdao, gigging regularly and building up a reputation for his close-knit production company.
Tell us about yourself. I'm MC Shazhou, I produced my own album in Qingdao four years ago, it sold pretty well. A lot of local people know the songs from that album. Then I made a second album two years ago but I realised I needed to do more to get myself out there, so I decided I need to get a company, a crew, to make music that is relevant to Qingdao. Nobody has made music about this town before.
What do you have to say about hip hop in China? Is there any scene? Chinese hip hop is just beginning. Loads of people here copy American hip hop. Our company intends to follow its own style. Chinese people should have their own hip hop scene, reflecting their own situation. Qingdao has a lot of good artists, but there're no places to record, no places to distribute, few places to perform, so they end up going to other towns or getting other jobs. Qingdao needs small independent, music-oriented businesses. Studios, small promotion companies, record shops, music shops and so on.
I hate 50 Cent, I hate rappers that keep talking about the same thing. His tracks are always about this whiskey, or this girl, or this money. I don't like it because it's not true. Lyrics in China - there must be restrictions, so what can you say? In China, yes the government restricts things. There are lots of things I wouldn't say, but I can talk about life, love, friendship. I have a song, I talk about Zhanqiao [Pier], how people go there, talk about different things, see different people. The idea is kind of like a fly-on-the-wall, trying to tell the stories of people, loads of different people. What facilities do you have at your studio? Right now I have facilities to record vocals and produce electronic music. Keyboard and computer for sampling and producing tracks, sound room for recording instruments. It's going to get bigger though. Anyone who has their own instruments can record whatever they want. Where do you see it going?
What got you into this type of music? My first real passion was Eminem's music, his lyrics are good. He talks about life, real life. I like French hip hop - MC Solaar. El Matador is a good rapper. I love the person behind his music. His music hits a pulse that makes the rapper's lyrics come out really well. In China MC Hot Dog (热狗 regou) is the best. He talks about the truth - that crew are based in Taiwan, but they do speak Chinese. When I was little, I listened to them, they influenced me a lot.
We want to do loads of albums. We have an idea, we call City Soul - it's a music publishing company, that will try to work with artists in Qingdao, to record their songs and to produce CDs that represent the city, not just our music but other artists too. City Soul is an idea that every artist can make an album or a song, giving Qingdao's musicians a chance to expose their music. It'll be a way to get the word out and find an audience. Accrophone at Le Bang
Inglewood, Compton, Harlem, Quebec? The massive French-speaking province in eastern Canada doesn't exactly spring to mind when thinking of cap-popping, booty blinging, hiphopping gangbangers, but that hasn't stopped well-regarded duo Accrophone from waxing lyrical on the highs and lows of living there - and while much of hip hop has fallen victim to the success of a few superficial superstars, this group keep lyrics and music pure and pointed. The gifted double team of Claude Begin and Emmanuel Lajoie-Blouin rap in English and French, and coming from a mixed and creative background, started studying guitar and banging out beats on cardboard boxes way back in 1993. After winning the 2001 BOOM contest, an annual

festival in Quebec that promotes underground hiphop and DJs, Accrophone were signed to RicoRich Productions, and began recording. Two albums later, they are regarded as Quebec's best hip-hop act. What makes Accrophone unique is their musical and recording skill, using a massive range of instruments and sampling techniques in their tracks, while fusing hip-hop with elements of jazz and reggae. With harpsichord, clarinet and violin samples providing melody for their sharp lyrics, and a groovy, laid back rhythm, the group, brought over by French culture provocateurs Alliance Francais will set Le Bang alight for one stop on their China-wide tour. Visit www.afshandong.com for more details.
Local "pisspot punkers" (Timeout Beijing) The Dama Llamas and heavy metal virtuosos Victorious War are on the bill for the night, a night that will leave lovers of the arts sorely disappointed but it'll be a disappointment laced with inebriated elation. The former Longjia Hotel is undergoing renovations by the same team that made the Observatory Youth Hostel in Qingdao's Old Town such a cool place. With three rooftop terraces and plenty of room for seaside frolics, it's going to be an awesome party venue this summer. Tickets will be available at the door for 10元.

"I feel a little bit limited by my costume - I could really do with less." Marcus Olsson has been living in Qingdao for around three and a half years, and found the community laughs of the Expat Charity Panto to be an annual highlight. When the production rolled around last year, he found himself organising Aladdin's flying carpets (a gift from his employer, IKEA) and helping out with the test flights. This year, he's gone whole hog: "I like to act, and spend time on a stage. It's a great way to meet people, and a fun thing to do - I even get to leave work early!" Marcus will portray Captain Codpiece, whom he describes as a "very very intelligent but navigationally-challenged seafarer," whose efforts to transport the explorer Robinson Crusoe end them up marooned on a desert island with a man called Friday, cannibals, dangerous flora, an overzealous Dame and laughs for all ages. "Being part of something like this is wonderful," says Marcus. "There's so much to it, even beyond what people see on the stage - the costumes, the sets, the practicing. You build it all up, and there's amazing positive energy." Helene Lagendijk/van Oosterbosch is participating in her third expat pantomime this year, and has seen the level of interest get stronger with each annual production. This year she has volunteered for the responsibility of sourcing materials and producing
costumes according to designs sent over from England by former Qingdao resident Lu Walsh. Helene is charged with bringing to life sketches of grass headwear, pirates (and their avian friends) and the notorious Dame herself, all according to the 'under budget, over the top' characteristics of panto tradition. The role brings a slew of challenges as well as rewards. "Sometimes it's wonderful to find exactly what you're looking for, and sometimes it's just impossible to make sense of what is needed. But I love to be involved with this kind of community activity, where we are raising money to save children's lives, and it's definitely safer for everyone if I'm not on the stage." Indeed, the panto is a community-building experience on many levels. Audience participation is key ("HE'S BEHIND YOU!"; "SSSsssssssssss...") and one of the hallmarks of the genre is to pepper any production with local shoutouts. But since its first performance three years ago, the Qingdao International Drama Group has donated all proceeds from its pantos to the Qingdao Expat Charity Fund. Through these performances, audience members are providing schoolbooks and medical treatment to Shandong children who are not reached by typical social assistance networks. "Last year we raised enough money for a child to receive heart surgery," Helene recalls. "It's win-win for everyone. Everyone involved in the production is a volunteer, it's a low budget thing, and at the same time it's
great fun and it's changing people's lives." She adds, "(Director) Tamara (Studniski) is doing an amazing job of bringing everything together, and her creativity drives the production." Studniski has directed each of the organisation's pantomimes to date, and also coordinated the dramatic performances 'China Stories' and 'Third Culture Kids' in 2008. In the meantime, Marcus and the rest of the 50+ member cast and crew are well on their way to a memorable production."I'm Swedish, so i only understand twenty-five percent of the script to begin with! And since we practice everything out of sequence anyway, it's impossible to make any sense of the plot," he says, grinning as if he were eager to let me in on some of his favourite jokes. "Just believe me, it's a lot of fun, and we know you'll enjoy the show."

Coffee is one of the world's most highly-traded (legal) agricultural commodities by value, as well as the top export product for twelve countries. A thriving coffee culture is a mark of a globalised city. A roasted coffee bean represents a link between the soils of a faraway, tropical place, and the skill of a local roastmaster in the place where it will be consumed. The place names associated with coffee either distinguish between growing region (Colombia, Costa Rica Tarrazu etc) or style of roast/preparation (Italian-, Viennese-, French roast; Turkish). Like wine, or tea, each growing region lends its coffee a unique set of flavour characteristics that set it apart from all others. But unlike wines and other fermented products, the place where the raw beans are processed has no direct bearing on the qualities of the cup - it makes no substantive difference whether they were roasted in Rome, or Seattle... or Qingdao.
Wired in Qingdao
Brown Gold Coffee breaks in Eric Blocher Photos © Eric Blocher
From their first cultivation in Ethiopia more than a millennium ago, beloved coffee shrubs were brought by monks and conquerors to be grown in almost every tropical country around the world. A coffee bean is really a seed, first forming as a flower on the branch of a coffee shrub, then sitting at the core of the sweet-ish coffee cherry, and finally separated from its outer shell to be either planted
or roasted. On the one hand, it is a kernel of genetic material waiting to grow into a productive plant; on the other, it is full of acids and other chemical compounds waiting to be transformed by intense heat into a rich bouquet of caramels and oils whose captivating aroma has been waking people up around the world for many centuries.
Green coffee beans can be stored easily for over one year in most environments, lending themselves to ocean shipping. Coffee capitals of the past 150 years, from Seattle and San Francisco to Trieste, have been bustling international port cities. The drink has accompanied trading and merchant classes for centuries, winning over hearts and taste buds everywhere it goes. It was really only a matter of time before a city with Qingdao's throughput of foreigners and shipping containers would have local entrepreneurs taking a hand in supplying quality brew to its dedicated fans. Qingdao has begun to see coffee move from being a foreign curiosity to a pop trend to the beginnings of a localised commodity. The arrival of SPR in Qingdao in the 1990s brought a waft of possibility for an engrained coffee culture, taking a few chapters from the Starbucks book (which continues to sell

Roasting process Air inside the drum is heated (often in the area of 200° C, though this varies according to different roasters' preferences). Green beans are loaded into the hopper and dropped into the internal drum, which rotates to keep the batch cooking evenly. 'lifestyle' in Tall, Grande and Venti). Franchises with proactive ownership still rank among the best coffee shops in town (see May 4th SPR, below). Memorably, however, a rash of new green shops around Fuzhou Lu in 2006-07 fell victim to the opening of a different class of independent cafes, with owners and staff who appreciated the individualised, personal experience of relaxing with a good cup. Today, the Hong Kong Gardenadjacent is a particularly fertile area to do just that. Places like Cafe Kona (see below) know enough about coffee enjoyment that their customers have come to identify the shops with a total coffee experience.
Man on a Mission
This new wave has been helped along by Gordon Cao, a former company man whose work regularly took him overseas to places where he began to develop a taste for coffee. At that time, most premium coffees brewed in China were being roasted overseas, largely because the mark of foreign-ness stood out to the uninitiated as a sign of quality and as one of the most effective ways to market the drink to the younger generation. Cao saw the penchant for foreign roasts as a challenge to local coffee development for two reasons. For one thing, coffee can begin to lose its flavour within three days of roasting, and it takes a lot of additives to keep coffee fresh on a trans-oceanic voyage. By providing a roastery in Qingdao, his customers would be able to drink their coffee at the peak of its freshness - and those who took an active interest would also be able to tell him exactly which flavour characteristics they like, and guide his roasts accordingly. Another issue favouring local roasting is that the import tax on a quantity of green beans (~8% by value) is a small fraction of the tax on the same quantity of finished, roasted beans (~30% by
The roaster begins to frequently sample beans from the drum, watching the colour turn darker and darker brown, and to listen for the beginning of the 'second crack'. At this point many acid compounds, which could be described as ranging from 'floral' to 'sour', can still be detected in the flavour. This is where a 'medium roast' coffee would be finished.
value), owing to the fact that green beans, as a raw agricultural commodity, do not have the same kind of value added. Added to this, the Chinese province of Yunnan has recently become a major producer of the arabica coffee bean that is used in almost all premium coffees, and Yunnan beans sell for considerably less than others of similar quality (though they are a small fraction of what Mission roasts). The cost savings that Cao is able to pass on to customers makes his product extremely competitive, and with a machine that roasts 3kg of green coffee beans at a time, he currently supplies over thirty Qingdao coffee outlets and has a healthy stream of Chinese, Korean and Western retail customers. Every day, coffee buyers and enthusiasts parade through his shop to try the latest roast of Colombian or Ugandan beans, offer suggestions and decide whether they want to buy. It's an obsession he's happy to share.
Setting down roots
Far from the frenzy of downtown, peering east over the Yellow Sea, Cafe Mingjia is a quiet oasis of coffee appreciation. Owner Sun Seong-Ho has been gradually deepening his relationship with the magic little beans over the past six years. Classes at a coffee institute in South Korea prepared him with the understanding and love to run his own shop, but as his staffmember Zhu Jie quotes Confucius, " 知之者不如好知者,好知者不如乐知者 (to know a thing is no match for having an interest in it, and to have an interest in it does not compare to having a passion for it)."
Most coffee is roasted to just before, during or after the second crack, which again results from breakdown of acids and oils in the beans into sugars and gases. The sugars then caramelise, breaking down the distinctive acids and leaving the rich flavour that most people associate with coffee. Depending on when the coffee is finished, it might be 'full city', 'Viennese', 'Italian' or 'French'. The beans at this point are very shiny. The beans come out into a cooling pan, which is aerated so that the thermal mass of the batch is spread out and keeps the beans from continuing to cook.

Coffee has had a complex relationship with an array of religious establishments, typically being banned for its stimulating effect until authorities learned that it kept their congregants awake through the sermon, at which point the drink was declared holy. Great places to get your fix Cafe Kona

Employees like Zhu Jie and Ping Ping came to him with an interest in coffee, but through their enjoyment of their own quality product that interest has grown into a deep infatuation. They spend their free time researching coffee production techniques, from storage to roasting and brewing, and sharpening their English- and Korean language skills to better access the information that is available. After experimenting as a team with very small, low-tech roasting techniques, Sun bought a cherry-red roaster for his shop in January 2009. Zhu Jie refers to the new addition as 'Miss Roasting Machine (烘焙机小姐)'; Ping Ping calls it 'Princess'. In March, they plan to offer several classes every week, in Korean and Chinese, for people who are interested in learning about coffee appreciation, whether for the purpose of opening their own shop or simply because they want to better understand this beverage. More than a commodity, it is a bundle of smells and feelings and history that they have fallen totally in love with.

In Person with Ian Walk REDSTAR
Though this year's Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) is his first foray into round-the-world yacht racing, Skipper Ian Walker (GBR) is no stranger to high performance and world-class competition on the water. Having begun to sail at the age of 8, Walker is a two-time Olympic silver medallist (crewing the 470 in Atlanta, and Star in Sydney), America's Cup Skipper, and coach of the Olympic champion Yngling team at Athens in 2004. The yacht under Walker's command considers Qingdao one of its two home ports, the other being Galway, considered by many to be Ireland's cultural heart. The 'Green Dragon' is a unique cooperative venture in the history of VOR, taking support from Tourism Ireland as well as from Shandong Linggong, Weichai Power and Triangle Tyres, the latter of which are all Chinese companies based Shandong. The Green Dragon is the first VOR vessel to be built in China (in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province), and Qingdao is the first Chinese city to host this phenomenal, extremely challenging and increasingly popular event. After guiding his crew through safely to Qingdao through the most dangerous and damaging leg in race history, and having acquired a taste for Tsingtao's best-known produce, Walker sat down to tell REDSTAR about his incredible journey.
sailing 19 How does the Volvo Ocean Race differ from America's Cup, the Olympics and other events you compete in? America's Cup is very special; it's match racing, one-off short races, highly technical, commercial event. The Olympics are a very pure sporting event - everyone has the same equipment, making it much more of a man-against-man. The Volvo (Ocean Race) has elements of the America's Cup in it, with emphases on technology and commerce, but there's also an added component of human spirit and adventure, a kind of mental and physical endurance which isn't in the America's Cup (where you get to have a hot bath and go to bed every night). We have forty days to Rio de Janeiro ahead of us now, and there's no getting off. Even when you're in port, there's a lot to be done.
if I've got one job, it's to keep everybody pulling in the same directio n
What would you say is the greatest challenge while you're on the water? For me, as skipper, my biggest challenge is trying to get the best out of everyone on the team. I don't have one specific role; I help with the steering, the navigation and boat speed areas, but if I've got one job, it's to keep everybody else pulling in the same direction. Everybody wants to see the job done well, and everyone appreciates the contributions of others, whether it's the media specialist (in our case Guo Chuan) or looking after the sails or steering the boat, everybody has an active interest in coordination and is in it to see it done well.
We're being followed very closely in Ireland - our difficulties in the last leg were on the six o'clock news there. We went to Galway to promote the boat a year before the race, and even then there were hundreds of people there to welcome us and I'm sure there will be a terrific reception. Galway is probably most famous for its oyster festival, and its golf. It's a small town of 50,000-60,000 people, but they know how to have a good time and we're looking forward to it.
What would you say is most fulfilling about participating in VOR? Sportingwise, I'd have to say it was the moment on the first leg when we arrived first in Brazil. But getting here, having damaged the boat and weathered the storms that we had all the way up from Singapore, getting here was a tremendous sense of achievement.
How would you describe the boat's arrival in its home port? The reception in Qingdao was breathtaking. I was lost for words. We were quite tired, having just gotten in, but 600 drummers, colour everywhere, it was simply astounding. Our ground crew had seen some of the other boats come in before us and were amazed by the festivities, but were told that it was just a warmup for the Green Dragon's arrival. It's a good job we got here for it!
Have you or your crew bonded with Qingdao since you've been here? I've bonded with Club New York (Hey Juan have adopted us!) and Lennon Bar, and our own band played down in the Blue Bar at Seaview Garden one night. I can't say I've been and done this or done that, we haven't been to too many attractions or monuments - we tried to visit sponsors in Lingying (about 3.5 hours north of here) one day, but got stuck in the fog and had to turn around!
But equally, I liaise with a school in England where kids send me emails and I write back. Reading these messages is great - they now know where the Taiwan is, and where the Philippines are, and where Qingdao is, they know what an albatross is and what a Volvo Open 70 looks like, and it's really satisfying to be sharing this with them. Also to look at the emails that come in from our website (www. greendragonracing.com) gives me a powerful sense of the enthusiasm and support that's behind this team - it's different satisfaction on different levels, and it's wonderful. How have you seen VOR developing? It's constantly evolving. It was a huge step to bring the race to Asia, which has clearly seen some enormous benefits but of course there are still some issues which we still have to deal with, namely the more stopovers and the longer the course the more it costs to run a team. We all want to see more teams in the race, but the reach that has been provided by sponsorship in these areas has allowed the race to become the amazing, accessible, global project that it is. It would be an honour to be involved again in the future.

he first steps took a lot of psyching up. There are lots of thrills - bungee jumps and such - that titillate the adventurous spirit, but here, a craggy path flanked by a sheer drop. If you fell, you would certainly die. There was a fence, but it offered little support; low-set, crumbling and porous, defining the gap between me and the canopy, sometimes hundreds of feet below. One must pay more attention than usual to the wind. I backed up against the other face. In winter, Cangshan Mountain is foggy, and cold. At four-thousand metres above sea level, the isolated peak is one of the furthermost southeasterly mountains of the Himalayas. To the west of Dali, the feature lends an eerie aura to the tranquil town - in the late afternoon, the sun falls behind it earlier than it would the unblemished horizon. The extra hours of darkness, I reasoned, added to the sleepiness of the area.
22 travel Michael had been in China for seven days, and was still getting used to the accommodating locals. Despite his linguistic handicap, he was making the most of his time here. An avid climber, the drop didn't faze him. Getting stared at did, but it seemed the fairer sex had taken to him in a big way. Ian on the other hand, shabbily attired and sporting flipflops in winter, was attracting the curious gaze of leather-shod male mountaineers. He joined me, his back to the wall.
Trading hands Dali is much more an integral part of western China's history than its present day visage would lead one to believe. In 738 CE, it became the seat of the Kingdom of Nanzhou, which lasted almost two hundred years before being conquered by the Duan Clan, who themselves lasted another two hundred years before being conquered by the Mongols. Its location enabled Dali to prosper economically, as the most northerly capital on the Burma Road, and spiritually as a major thoroughfare for the spread of Buddhism to eastern China. For much of China's civilised history, it played a greater role in local affairs than Yunnan's current capital, Kunming. From the northern areas of Cangshan Mountain, you can see out to San Tasi 三塔寺 or the Three Pagodas, ancient structures dating back 1,200 years. The tallest and oldest, Qianxun, stands nearly seventy metres high, an awesome achievement for the day. The pagodas hold legendary status among locals as they have survived numerous earthquakes through the years. The three reside in the grounds of Chongsheng Temple (Chongsheng Si 崇圣寺), which though built at the same time as Qianxun, was severely damaged in a fire in the Ming Dynasty and renovated to modern standards in 2005.
Looking down at the pan Visitors to Dali will most likely set up camp in the Old Town, a quaint and well-kept semblance of history, enclosed in square city walls. It's a wonderful place to spend a few days relaxing, meandering between themed coffeeshops such as heavy metal Tang Dynasty (named after the band of the 1980s) and restaurants serving tourist-friendly fusions of Chinese and western dishes, like Bamboo Cafe. Notably, there are a number of Tibetan entrepreneurs capitalising on the illustrious lure of their mysterious homeland, and it was the dining experience at Jim's Tibetan Restaurant that most impressed. Smoked yak steaks and fried yak cheese featured predominantly, in a bucolic spread finished off with shot after shot of Jim's Number One Special, a corn-based whisky infused with ginseng, dried

fruits and mushrooms, that, according to the label, "Gives you power! Makes you sleep like baby! Good against Chinese colds!" It got me drunk, to be sure, and I have a bottle saved for a special occasion. When we saw Simon later my first impression - a state of shock. He sat hunched over the foot of the bed, an inch more would surely see him faceplanting. His skin was still much whiter than usual, and this is a man not particularly fond of daylight. The hotpot I had enthusiastically coerced him to eat four days ago in Zhuhai had still not finished with him. I assured him again, that he would get his game back soon, that this was normal and an absolutely necessary part of what the fellas had come to sardonically call, 'The China Experience'. With all the strength he could spare he raised an angular cheekbone and shot me a ghostly glare, words uttered with a Golem-like lilt, "Leave me be..." Downstairs, and The Tibetan Lodge was taking care of its occupants with characteristic competence. Such is the tourism industry in Dali that competition in the Old Town keeps menus full and prices down. Our four-bed, two storey room was costing us just 40元 each per night, and a sublime yak cheese omelette an additional 20元. Dali, and indeed much of Yunnan, is a good place for the less-experienced China hand; you don't have to speak Chinese, and you need neither a stomach of iron to digest the food, or the dogged persistence of Brahma to get travel tickets. It's a little oasis of calm, attracting backpackers, hippies and other

The 18 oddities of Yunnan Partly due to the varieties of ethnic backgrounds in the province, the people of Yunnan are said to exhibit 18 quirky traits, or 云南十八怪 Yunnan Shiba Guai.
Eighteen Oddities Yunnan is famed amongst the Chinese for its Eighteen Oddities, or Yunnan Shiba Guai 云南十八 怪. These include some of the quirky idiosyncracies that the tribespeople exhibit, or the aberrant weather and chaotic geography of the province. "Grannies climb mountains faster than monkeys," or, "Monks can have love affairs," are some of my favourites, but one in particular, "Children are raised by men," drew my attention as our party breached the walls of the gentrified Old Town on our way to Erhai Lake. Named for its shape, which resembles an ear, the lake flanks the town on the east, trapping it, like Qingdao, between mountains and water. On the mild descent into the plain, fields in the distance were pockmarked with the weary silhouettes of old ladies tending to their crops. There was not a man in sight, just the shrivelled and stolid workhorse wives of Dali's pipe-smoking househusbands. In fact, one of the crops they were tending looked familiar...
Bad Monkeys ...Leading on nicely to Dali's nightlife. Foreigners here are likely to be harangued by old ladies clad in loud red tunics and tribal beads, who sell illicit substances. These are remnants of the Bai minority 白族, and visitors should be careful - while the women themselves are not threatening it doesn't make good sense to be involved with them. Bad Monkey Bar on the other hand, is the epicentre of nightlife in the little town, and every foreigner who has visited Dali in the last five years will know about it. Founded by British-born Asia-veterans,
1. Eggs are tied up in rope 2. Bamboo hats are used as wok lids 3. Three large mosquitoes make up a dish 4. Bamboo is used to make smoking pipes 5. Erkuai - a glutinous rice cake 6. The same dress all year round 7. Young girls are called old ladies 8. Toes are exposed all year round
the place is renowned all the way to Kunming for mad summer parties and warm winter lock-ins. At the time of writing the bar is relocating to a bigger venue that will make it a major hotspot not just in Dali, but all over Yunnan. It also has, conclusively, the best burger in town. It would seem then, that everything from ancient temples to 24 hour party people are stepping up their game in preparation for the tourist yuan that flows through in increasing volume every year. And it's true that the maintainers are doing a great job of keeping the place beautiful. At the end of the trip I asked myself, is a thinner veneer of ancient China better than no ancient China at all? At least the prayer wheels keep on turning. My friends were happy. After Guangdong, they'd have settled for Campbell's Soup tins on sticks.
9. Rain here but sunshine there 10. Girls wear flowers all year round 11. Girls carry tobacco bags 12. Green vegetables are called bitter vegetables 13. Grannies climb mountains faster than monkeys 14. Trains go abroad but not inland 15. Monks can have love affairs 16. Children are raised by men 17. Automobiles move in the clouds 18. Cars are faster than trains
Getting there The bus from Kunming takes around four hours along perpetually ascending roads and runs regularly, around once every two or three hours from the city centre. The ticket price is around 120元. Flying is now a popular way to make the trip from Kunming Airport. Flights run daily.

try planning your lesson in 15 minute sections, but remember that while you want to plan ahead, the most important thing is to be flexible
Class of your own Perfect Timing When developing a lesson plan, timing can be key. You want to have enough material to fill the allotted time, but how can you judge this? Let me begin by saying it’s difficult, add that it gets easier with practice, and stress that it will never be an exact science. The reason is that every class is different, and it’s amazing how a single exercise can keep one class busy and put the next to sleep. The only thing you can do is estimate, include two more exercises than you think you’ll need, stay flexible and patient, and be prepared with some five-minute fillers. Keep a list of fillers with you -- such as some conversation-starting questions, e.g. “What do you think you’ll be doing twenty years from now?” or “Think of one sentence that sums up the class we just had.”
Susan Socrates
Try writing out your lesson plans in 15-minute sections. Rather than putting an exact time limit on each exercise, think in terms of where you want to be by 8:30, and then by the break, and so on. If you’ve used material before the break that you meant to save until after, use the break time to look at your notes and readjust the rest of the lesson. While you want to plan ahead, the most important thing is to be flexible. It’s difficult to remain flexible if you get nervous. Realising that I have nothing left for the last 30 minutes of class makes me nervous. If you have enough material ready to use, you are less likely to get nervous and will be better at thinking on your feet.
Part of being flexible means not stopping the students if they are enjoying an exercise. If they’re speaking English, let them continue. Look at your lesson plan and see what can be omitted or may be used at a later time. Pay attention to the students’ reactions and be patient. Sometimes I think the students are not responding to an exercise, so we should just move on. Then suddenly they 'get it,' and begin working feverishly. Present an exercise and be sure to give them time before deciding to skip to the next exercise. If one group finishes before the others, challenge them to go more deeply into the same material or possibly give them an extra question to answer.
My philosophy is to be overprepared, but you might be more accustomed to winging it. I’ve known teachers who go into the classroom without any lesson plan. Be sure to ask yourself if that is working not just for you, but also for your students. Are you really giving them the guidance they need? Or are you just letting them have an English Corner? New teachers should always begin by planning their lessons. With experience, lesson plans, either carefully scripted or spontaneous, will only get easier. Save something especially fun for the last exercise. End the class with energy and laughter, inspiring them to keep talking in English even after the bell rings.

Hundred Schools On the Qin
Gar Kerbel (戴岭)
the emperor demanded strict obedience from his officials and his subjects "Long united, the country must break apart; long apart, it must unite." Such it was in 221 BCE when the State of Qin (秦国) conquered the Warring States of the Western Zhou Dynasty. That era of turmoil, which had sparked perhaps China's most introspective and philosophical era, was finally over. The strong hand of Qin had won, demonstrating that in times of distress and chaos, strong central authority is important for a country or organisation. This Legalist approach cemented together an empire - a firm, autocratic state. Yet it lasted merely 15 years. Immediately the new Emperor Qinshihuang started massive construction projects. He built roads linking the capital (near presentday Xi'an) to the far reaches of the empire. He had canals built. Most famously, the linking-up of the Great Wall was commenced, to keep out the Mongol tribes from the North. It is said that some 300,000 peasants toiled on the project.
A common system of weights and measures was created. The written language was standardised, as well - a colossal undertaking. The result was that imperial decrees and taxation could be easily handled all over the empire. Revolutionary change came to the government, as well. Gone was the age-old hereditary aristocracy. Instead, posts were assigned based on talent. This paved the way for the Han Dynasty to begin the imperial examination system. However, unity did not come easily. Life during the Qin was harsh. The emperor demanded strict obedience from his officials and his subjects. Punishments were extreme. The most legendary was - for severe offenses - the killing of a criminal's entire family. Emperor Qinshihuang, following the advice of his Legalist Prime Minister Li Si, desired a complete unification of thought. All non-Qin histories and schools of thought were banned. The pinnacle was the Burning of the
Books in 213 BCE. Illegal books had to be turned in to the government within 30 days of the order. Violators were sent to prison for four years. People caught discussing The Book of Odes or The Book of History were executed. Confucianism was especially feared, so Qinshihuang had over 460 Confucian scholars buried alive.
die either way. Incredibly, many soldiers had reportedly received omens saying that Chen would become king. Thus began China's first-recorded large-scale peasant rebellion. It became rather messy when many different rebel armies rose up, involving hundreds of thousands of peasants, yet in 207 BCE the Qin did fall.
This ruthless atmosphere outlived Qinshihuang, though. He died in 210 BCE, igniting vicious court intrigues. After the rightful successor was ordered to commit suicide, the emperor's second son Hu Hai succeeded his father. He proved to be more tyrannical, however.
The mess remained, though, for it took five years for the Han Dynasty to solidify. In many ways, the Han was a continuation of the Qin. Its rulers adopted the strict, Qin style of top-down government. They added something new, though, softening the 'strictness' - Confucianism was used to morally lead the people into following the strict Legalist rules of the empire. Confucianism and Legalism were blended together.
Historians have noted that reigns of terror never last, and so it was that the end of the Qin began with rain. It held an army of conscripted peasants behind schedule, a crime for which they faced a mandatory death sentence. It was the last straw. Looking death in the eyes, a soldier named Chen Sheng began planning a revolt. He figured he would
And thus was laid the philosophical and political groundwork which dynasty after dynasty used for the next two millennia.

The Equation of Love and Death
RocknRolla
Directed by Guy Ritchie
Directed by Cao Baoping
British gangster films received a needed make-over with Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (2000). Ritchie's witty dialog, memorable characters, ensemble casts and a hip tongue-in-cheek take on the genre were wrapped in the tight editing styles of Niven Howie and Jim Harris. After Snatch, Guy Ritchie is best known for marrying Madonna and proceeding to produce hot steaming loads of worthless dreck like the soulless anti-intellectual remake of Swept Away. RocknRolla (RR) was Ritchie's attempt at a comeback. Cue the dialog, characters, cast and tone and all should be well. Right? RR tells the story of a London land-grab gone bad. Dirty money and cherished art is stolen. The Russians get involved. And all the memorable scenes from Ritchie's previous hits are re-assembled here for your viewing pleasure. But these scenes feel different. Like two kids telling the same joke; one is hilarious while the other is overlong and tedious. RR is the latter. Get to the joke! That being said, this is a Ritchie film and much of what we all know and love is present. Gangsters trip and fall over themselves chasing the prize and are prone to monologueing and excessive violence. The photography is rich with dramatic lighting and he does well in showing off the ultramodern aesthetic of today’s new London. Gerard Butler, best known for the rock-hard abs of his Spartan king in 300, plays lead with all the grace of the second-string to Statham’s Turkish from Snatch. He rolls through his lines like he’s already in on the Ritchie joke rather than realising he’s the butt. And that’s the movie’s singular gag. If you can’t get enough heist films in your life, go with it. If you’re looking for the next Snatch, just roll away. -Ryan Blocher
The key art for The Equation of Love and Death suggests an airy, whimsical sort of thing, and the first ten minutes (credits floating in CG space, taxi driver Li Mi [Zhou Xun] confounding her passengers with long recitations of numbers) don't dispel this impression. The numbers are connected to Li's boyfriend Fang Wen (Deng Chao), who left four years ago and has yet to return as promised, although a fleeting appearance by lookalike Ma Bing (Deng again) confuses the issue. But the film shifts gears and spends most of its first act as a surprisingly unpleasant kidnapping drama, with Li Mi forced to chauffeur a couple of out-of-towners (Wang Yanhui and Wang Baoqiang) for shady but initially unspecified reasons. The crisis plays itself out, more or less, and the Fang/Ma mystery is gradually clarified with the help of friendly cop Ye Qingcheng (Zhang Hanyu). Equation is primarily a succession of coincidences, a structure popular among middlebrow filmmakers but which often comes off as heavy-handed, with characters and events reduced to cogs in the plot machinery (cf. Crash, The Edge of Heaven). Cao doesn't entirely evade this pitfall: this is a movie where sublime and mysterious coincidences are telegraphed by insistently 'minimalist' music, and a misjudged montage/voiceover needlessly doles out backstory. But the urban-realist visuals, understated if unremarkable, keep even the most contrived moments tethered to the ground. And the film goes out on a high note with a directaddress epilogue, memorable for Zhou Xun's conviction and for standing outside Cao's overdetermined narrative (the scene has no obvious place in the overall chronology). It's an effective closer, and provides some belated hope that Cao can wield a more delicate touch in his future work. -Josh Martin

Pineapple Express
Directed by David Gordon Green The Judd Apatow production line grinds on with Pineapple Express, resurrecting the '80s action-buddy comedy exemplified by Running Scared and Midnight Run. They've even tossed a stoner film into the mix, with James Franco as Saul Silver, a permanently blissed-out dope dealer, and Seth Rogen as Dale Denton, a weed-obsessed process server who witnesses a murder. So Dale and Saul hit the road, running up against two hitmen (Craig Robinson and Kevin Corrigan) and more quotidian obstacles (a dead car battery, Dale's skeptical girlfriend, the obligatory buddy film bickering). Those acquainted with previous Apatow productions will know what to expect here: haphazard plotting, rampant homosociality, Rogen's one-note slacker doofus routine, and rambling, love-it-or-hate-it dialogue that doesn't work when quoted out of context, not that this has ever stopped anyone (get your "Chicka Chicka Yeah" T-shirts at Hot Topic today!). Point #1 doesn't really matter in a sitcommy piece like Knocked Up, but action movies - even hybrid action/ comedies -- depend on forward momentum, and Pineapple Express strives to inject the relaxed pacing of a stoner comedy with occasional shots to the arm. But the violence is nebulous (we learn nothing of the druglord pursuing Dale and Saul) and nonthreatening, with Saul's pal Red (Danny McBride) taking more punishment than Wile E. Coyote. The filmmakers finally throw in the towel with an overblown firefight that repeatedly halts to let the actors deliver awkward one-liners; like Tropic Thunder - 2008's other big '80s-movie homage/parody/pastiche - the sequence doesn't gel as either action or comedy. (Express also reprises Thunder 's "ironic" use of faceless Asians as cannon fodder.) What's left is a diverting two hours that blatantly pitches for the cult hall of fame (with the principals fondly recalling their favorite "scenes" as a coda) but barely rises to Dumb and Dumber status, much less Cheech and Chong. -Josh Martin

Excited by the sounds he made on his 2007 album Magic, Springsteen continued writing until his friend, producer Brendan O' Brien heard them and said, "Let's keep going." That is exactly what they did, with the help of the E Street Band, recording during the breaks on last year's tour. "Working on a Dream has caught the energy of the band fresh off the road from some of the most exciting shows we've ever done. All the songs were written quickly, we usually used one of our first few takes, and we all had a blast making this one from beginning to end," said Springsteen. the measures aim to make uniform the administration of transfer pricing-related issues
The State Administration of Taxation (SAT) promulgated the much-anticipated transfer pricing measures detailing the administrative rules for all special tax adjustments in January. These special tax adjustments, including cost sharing, thin capitalisation, anti-avoidance, and transfer pricing documentation requirements were first outlined in chapter 6 of China’s Corporate Income Tax Law. However, until now, SAT had not defined several key aspects of that law. The measures aim to make uniform the administration and enforcement of transfer pricing-related issues. The new rules will act as a foundation for future policy changes to China’s transfer pricing regime.

returns in China must also file these required documents: • Related party relationships • Summary of related party transactions • Purchases and sales • Labour services • Intangible assets • Fixed assets • Financing • Foreign investment status • Foreign payments
Transfer pricing documentation Enterprises with business in China must have relevant transfer pricing documentation or face an additional interest levy of 5% on any transfer pricing adjustments. There are 26 specific items of documentation needed which break down into five basic categories: • Organisational structure • Description of business operations • Description of related party transactions
• •
Comparability analysis Selection and application of transfer pricing method
Companies that fail to submit this documentation could see the Chinese tax authorities determine what their taxable income is and asses a 5% penalty in addition to normal People’s Bank of China lending rate as part of an interest levy in addition to any fines. There are some exemptions from this requirement for certain enterprises, and small taxpayers with limited related party dealings could qualify for this.
Transfer pricing methods The implantation measures list six 'appropriate methods for transfer pricing': • Comparable uncontrolled price method • Resale price method • Cost plus method • Transactional net margin method
The authorities will investigate companies that tend to have the following characteristics: significant amounts or numerous types of related party transactions; long-term losses low profitability, or fluctuating patters of profit and loss; below average profitability than industry standards or profits that do not match the company's functions; business dealings with companies established in tax havens; absence of incomplete transfer pricing documentation; obvious violations of the arm’s length principle.
Other points of interest The new implantation measures also provide administrative guidance on debt-to-equity ratios pertaining to the thin capitalisation rules, further clarifies how the Chinese tax authorities will undertake anti-avoidance investigations, legal liabilities for failure to submit transfer pricing documentation, and a supplementary provision extending to December 31, 2009 the date of completion of transfer pricing documentation for 2008 (related party transaction disclosure forms for 2008 will still need to be filed by May 31, 2009). Qingdao’s Central Business District (CBD) encompasses much of the city’s most valuable real estate, stretching along the coast of Jiaozhou Bay (site of the XXIX Olympic Sailing Regatta in 2008) in either direction from the Municipal Government building and May 4th Square. Hong Kong Road, built in 1997 and named in honour of Hong Kong’s return to Chinese authority in that year, runs through the centre of the area and serves as the major artery of commerce in the city. A world unto itself InterContinental Qingdao Photos © Eric Blocher
In August and September, it housed the world’s best athletes as part of the Olympic Village. Now, the sailing centre’s two towers are home to a great new hotel, with as many amusements for locals as there are accommodations for its international, top-tier clientele. InterContinental Qingdao 98 Aomen Lu 6566-6666 澳门路98号 青岛海尔洲际酒店
Rooms The reputation of any hotel rests on the quality and amenities available to overnight guests, whether out-of-towners or locals in need of a getaway. InterContinental Qingdao sets its ‘standards’ high, with a wide array of amenities included across the board.
Meeting Facilities On the third floor, the auditorium is kitted out with an obscenely powerful projector and Bose theatre surround sound. As of the time of writing it has already seen an auspicious opening, having hosted a local viewing of Super Bowl XLIII, regular rehearsals for the upcoming Pantomime performance (see article, p. 10), and the legendary cast of Whose Line is it Anyway in their sole Qingdao performance. Its 487 plush seats are especially inviting after a few bites at Flavours, the amazing buffet at the other end of the floor. The open-floorplan banquet hall also seats up to 600 people.
Pampering The 24-hour fitness centre is stocked with elliptical trainers, treadmills, weights and whatever else you could need to get yourself in shape for Spring. And when the Spa opens later in March, it promises to offer the ultimate in Eastern and Western relaxation therapies, with the deluxe edition leaving you exfoliated, wrapped in ginger and honey, and massaged into bliss, a process which altogether takes around 2.5 hours. A variety of Traditional Massage Techniques is also available. Yes of course they have a swimming pool, and it’s fabulous, bathed in natural light. Long-term discount memberships for the workout and Spa areas start at 4000元 (individual, six months).
Case in point - a comprehensive entertainment system in every guest room powered by a WebTVstyle network of flight and sightseeing information, movies and music in addition to the usual hundreds of satellite channels - and in case you get tired of vegging, there’s a USB input on the TV so that you can use the wireless keyboard to edit Word and Excel documents from the distant comfort of your king-size bed. Need to print? Your TV’s networked to the Business Centre, so you’ll never have to fix another paper jam. And if you’re ready to change the mood, or want a light to be on as you migrate to bed, the TV also has a lighting menu that adjusts the ambient light in the room via your remote control. For a unique Qingdao experience, try one of the Aqua suites. Each has an enormous living-, bed- and bathroom, with a patio deck and jacuzzi overlooking the marina, and is available for around 2000元/night. But if these are all booked, don’t worry - 55% of the hotel’s rooms boast a sea view.

Eatery
Fly me to the Moon Photos © Eric Blocher
Like its international cousins within InterContinental Qingdao, Moon strives to take a well-loved cuisine to a new level. It’s team of chefs are drawn from China’s culinary centres (particularly Sichuan and Guangdong), and it is easy to see that each one of them has been delighting taste buds for many, many years. The expo-style kitchen, rare and reassuring in a Chinese restaurant, provides front row seats to the carefully-choreographed drama of creating a masterful meal. Each stove is purpose-built for a massive wok, with a basin around the base to make cleaning significantly easier. Fancy a la mian? There’s a noodle bar too! This is not fusion dining so much as a unique Chinese culinary experience, with dishes (from homestyle to exquisite) prepared in a way that makes the process and flavours exciting to guests. Prices are very reasonable for five-star hotel dining, and the differences between what you taste here vs. at your local canting make it well worth the trip. If you have ever wanted boneless la zi ji, or to be
able to identify the flavours and cut of beef under the sauce, or find your eyes to be a powerful organ of taste, shake up your March routine with a Moon landing. The gorgeous main dining room looks out over the marina, as do several of the many private banquet rooms. 2F InterContinental Qingdao 6566-6666 ext. 1588 青岛海尔洲际酒店二层

THE SIMPLE LIFE One year of Trattoria Verde Photos © Eric Blocher
Sixteen seats. Amazing Italian food and wine, at phenomenal prices. A Japanese chef. Closed Mondays.
shine through. Maybe that’s more of a shared future that I see both of these proud traditions are moving toward, that I’m happy to be part of.
What more needs to be said about Trattoria Verde? The place thrives on understated perfection, controlling everything from the quality, organic ingredients to excellent, knowledgeable service staff. It is as if Chef Kawachi has taken all of the humility for himself and left none for the food, which is impressive by any standard. In preparation for the restaurant’s first anniversary (7 March - see events), we took the opportunity (between bites) to ask him some questions.
Also, from an ingredients standpoint, both have a long tradition of using fresh fish, which is also one of my favourite things to prepare (see recipe, right). Of course, Qingdao is the best place you can be for fresh seafood, and I love cooking here.
There are sixteen seats in your restaurant, and people generally need reservations. Where are you going from here? I love the restaurant at this size because it gives me and my team enormous control. My dream, though, is to personally oversee the production You are Japanese, and you have shown yourself to be of every element of my meals, from feeding the a fantastic Italian chef. Where does your talent for this chickens to organically raising the basil and other cuisine come from? plants that I use. With this kind of scale we can be I’ve studied Italian cooking for several years, but very appreciative of our customers, and act on beyond that it’s similar to Japanese cooking in improvements that customers recommend or that subtle ways. One of the key points for me has been we think about. I’m grateful for all the people in the that both involve very fresh ingredients, with fairly straightforward preparation but no compromises on past year who have understood our concept and supported our restaurant, both as customers and food quality. Our concept is to be a ‘green’ eatery, and I try to let the fresh, natural flavours of the food vendors.
1. Chop the raw seabass into ~2cm squares, and space them out in a large bowl. 2. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, and then add the olive oil with lemon juice. Mix with your (clean) fingers. 3. Spoon onto a plate, and garnish with the onions, parsley and garlic olive oil. Eat immediately!

An out-of-body experience, Feeling Oneness with the Heavens and the Earth... Are these feelings real, or do they exaggerate the beauty of a motorcycle ride? Bikers struggle to describe of the beauty of a good ride. It happens at that moment when thinking ceases, and you and your bike just ‘are’. Maybe you’re leaning into a nice, swooping turn, or maybe you are smothered in fresh air and a blue sky. Maybe the sea is at your side and you’ve lost sense of time. Lucky for us, Huangdao is an amazing place to have a bike. Pinched between Xiaozhu Shan and the Yellow Sea, it’s a slice of motorcycle heaven. There are two truly classic rides in Huangdao. Both are long, and both can also be taken in pieces. One is by the mountain. One is by the sea. The most popular is the famed ‘peninsula run’. Xuejiadao is the district by the sea in which Huangdao’s beaches lie. There are 2 grand peninsulas, both of which run parallel to shore and both of which form a harbour. Silver Beach lies on the western peninsula; Golden Sand Beach lies at the root of the eastern one. Beginning about 10 minutes from Kaifaqu, both of them have a nice, long road winding along the shore. Once you get there, the city is forgotten. You are now in the Experience of the Ride. There are nice turns and clean straightaways. Views abound, with hills on one side, ocean on the other. Drive out past Golden Sand Beach and just keep riding. Go and go and go, atop the cliffs, by the shores, past the craggy coves and the green hills. Right when you’ve achieved motorcycle ecstasy, you climb a hill and reach the end of the peninsula. You are above the sea, looking down at a stubby, rocky cliff at the very mouth of Jiaozhou Bay. On a clear day, you can almost reach out and touch Qingdao. It’s all right there: from Tuandao to Zhongshan Park; Fushan to Shilaoren. You sit down for a moment and take it in. On a very clear day, you can even see Lao Shan. The cargo ships mope by, and you can’t resist loving it. “I love Huangdao,” you invariably sigh, “This place is great.”

Blingdao: The Watchman K. B. Kilmer
My mission: to show you all the fun ways to spend lots of cash, and look the part doing it. Now you have already drenched yourself in all the Calvin Klein one can handle, you have found printed collared shirt from SELECTED (who knows how these danish designer have so much style), and you look at your wrist and you say this watch just ain’t gonna cut that mustard today. Well, problem solved: not the most expensive watches on Qingdao but easily the most stylish, Vacheron Constantin (first floor Hisense Plaza, just across from Armani, a hop-skip and a jump down the hall from Cartier). Now I was in there just today checking up on this oh-so icey (diamond encrusted) piece of work, but honestly you just have to be a canto-pop superstar to sport this chunky piece of arm candy. I prefer something a little less (dare I say?!) tacky. But, the rest of the watch selection at Vacheron Constantin is topnotch style, fine gator and very chic, with the kind of numbers that make you say, “I like it.” Assuming, of course, that you can dig a 389,000元 price tag. Granted, that is one of the more expensive ones, a real fine chronograph where you can look at the back and through the glass you can see all the precise inner workings, and this is the only one with that feature. So, where is the priciest of the pricey you ask? Well, I don’t go near any of the over-advertised watch manufactures like Omega and such. I feel you have a lack of taste if James Bond is the one guiding you to whatever name you like the best rather than a production of a true master time-piece. With that said, just kiddy-corner from V Con, there’s a second watch boutique with the priciest watch I’ve seen, with none of those tacky diamonds. It’s called Breguet. With an apparent history of over 230 years, Monsieur Breguet feels his model ‘Grandes Complications - Ref. 3657’ is worth the 971,200元 it takes to snuggle up to. Of course, it is very sharp on the wrist, with that snazzy glass peek-hole, to see the inner workings (this one has it on the face); I’ll give it a thumbsup. Personally I would prefer a Maserati, but the birthday still has a couple months to go. Hisense Plaza 117 Aomen Lu 澳门路117号 6678-8888
