6 Places to Take Your Kids
2. As a foreigner in Qingdao, it’s hard to know where to take you kids beyond the obvious few tourist traps in the city. Superdad Mark Oliver gives you 6 good places to bring your children for playtime, but be warned, your kids will love these places so much that they won’t be ready to leave when you are.
Genius Baby Address: 127 Ningxia Road, Shinan District
Qingdao is full of swimming pools for infants, open all year-round. The one at Genius Baby, located at Wanshixing Gardens, offers a small pool that infants can wade in with rubber flotation devices, as well as a bigger one for children aged five and up. This is a great way to keep your children active and to give them a head start on swimming lessons.

Fun Club
Address: Darling Harbour Mall, Shinan District
Located by the Olympic Sailing Centre, the Fun Club is a top-grade playground for young kids. The Club has a little bit of something for every child. For the active, there is a playground with slide, ball pits and teddy bears. For boys, there is an electric Hot Wheels race track with an impressive selection of cars. For wind-down time, there is a children’s’ library and building blocks. The Fun Club seems to have found a niche in the expat market, and is usually more popular with foreigners than other similar play centres. For many expats, this might be the main reason to visit and get a chance to meet other Qingdao moms, dads and their kids.

Cheer Kids Play Park Address: 116 Yanji Road, Shibei District
Almost every mall in Qingdao is equipped with a play area filled with slides, ball pits and activities for children. The largest is probably the one at Wanda CBD Plaza. Cheer Kids Play Park almost takes up an entire floor in an already massive mall. The play area is huge. It is divided into sections for different types of play. One area is full of slides and climbing areas that let kids play on complicated obstacle courses. Another has American Gladiator-style cannon that shoots plush balls, letting kids battle like warriors, but safely, as every inch of the place is padded.
The Qingdao Public Library Address: 109 Yanji Road, Shibei District
Right near Wanda CBD Plaza, Qingdao has a great library that is almost completely overlooked by expats. The library has a colourful children’s section for ages three and up. If you’re trying to get your child to learn Chinese, this is the perfect place to visit. If your child doesn’t understand a word of Chinese, there’s still a foreign language section that may well have a wider selection of English books than Book City. With a passport and a 160RMB refundable deposit, you can take home a new book for your child every day.

Dream World
Address: Maidao Square, 33 Haikou Lu, Laoshan District
Dream World is a restaurant for children. As soon as you step in, you’ll be greeted by Winnie the Pooh and Mickey Mouse, and other brightly-coloured Disney favourites which decorate the walls inside. The restaurant serves kid-friendly Western food, but the main appeal is the play area inside.
5.
HABA Store
Address: Maidao Square, 33 Haikou Lu, Laoshan District
HABA is a wooden toy company from Germany, a country famous for its craftsmanship. They create premium toys that last for a lifetime. These toys are hand-made works created by artisan carpenters, rather than the quickly produced factory toys that fill most shelves. The store is expensive, as one might expect; however, it doubles a play centre for kids. For a small fee, children can come and play with their selection of toys, which includes creative puzzles, games, marble race tracks, a ride-able car, and toys for newborns.
12
This is a restaurant designed for kids to have fun above all else. It offers a jungle gym with a trampoline, plastic cars for kids to race around in, a line of miniature storeage containers filled with blocks and plastic cooking toys, and even a reading corner. Kids can run around like wild here and build up a good appetite before sitting down to eat. And, yes, they do rent out private rooms for parties. One warning, though – come before you get hungry. Your child is going to have too much fun on the playground to want to sit down and eat. Give your child at least half an hour to be a kid and play.

t’s in the time of year that yellow candy peeps begin their long sit on the shelf until they will inevitably be thrown away months later. However, the most common Easter past time is painting Easter eggs with the family. Jen Wenschhof-Gallogly gives us some creative ways to paint Easter Eggs this holiday.
O
ne of the ways people in the US celebrate Easter is by decorating eggs. Stores sell dyes and paints. Needless to say, these products are not readily available at your local Chinese grocery store. The good news is that natural solutions are available at your local market.
what is familiar. For the two methods that involve dyeing I recommend white eggs, which are sometimes a little difficult to find. For the other method any eggs would work. Also you don’t need to settle for just chicken eggs, be adventurous and try quail, duck, or goose eggs.
All the methods on the next page are slightly more time consuming than going to Hisense or Metro and buying food colouring, but part of the fun of living in China is learning how to be creative instead of relying on

perature) Needle or Pin Paper clip Drinking straw Bowl
Hold the egg firmly and use the pin to make a small hole in one end. Repeat on the other end of the egg. Unfold one end of the paper clip. Use is to enlarge the hole a little more, then push it through and use it to break the yolk. To ensure that you are breaking the yolk, just swirl the paperclips thoroughly inside the egg. Place the straw over one of the holes. Hold the other hole over the bowl and blow through the straw. Repeat this process as needed. If you get resistance, stop and make the holes a little larger. To make the insides a little cleaner, just run warm water through the egg. Dry your egg and you are ready to go.
This project is probably more suitable for older teens or adults, because nice designs require more patience and refined motor skills.
Place the eggs in a single layer in a pan. Add water until the eggs are covered. • Add 1 teaspoon/5 ml of vinegar (I use rice vinegar) • Add the dye material based on the chart. • Bring water to a boil. • Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. • Remove them from the water and set aside to dry. If you would like them to be a deeper colour, temporarily remove them from the liquid. Transfer the liquid to another bowl and place the eggs back in the liquid until you achieve the desired colour. NOTE: you may get a little speckling if you don’t strain the liquid through a coffee filter, but I like the speckled effect so I just pour the liquid through a fine mesh sieve

to separate the large pieces. Naturally dyed eggs have a matte finish as opposed to the usual glossy finish. Feel free to rub a little cooking oil onto them after they are dry. Relief Boiling - Add a little flair to your eggs with several common household items I recommend boiling the dyeing material first and then transferring it to a bowl before putting the eggs in. In which case you will probably want to soak them for a longer period of time than the eggs that were boiled in the water. As for the eggs, you can either hardboil them before dyeing, or you can use blown-out eggs (uncooked eggs in which you blow the yolk and white out of the egg).
Other items that will help this process are: • Masking tape or stickers • Rubber bands of various widths • A white candle or light coloured crayon • Small leaves or flower petals (cilantro works well and is easy to find, but any leaf or flower that will lay flat and fit on your egg will work) • A neutral coloured women’s stocking The basic principle of this method is that the tape, rubber bands, crayon, or leaves are going to be placed on the eggs so that when they are dyed there will be a white space where the tape, etc. was. With the rubber bands I like to dye the egg first in a light colour and then add rubber bands and place in a darker colour so that I have two different colours. Feel free to repeat this step several times to get several dif-
You can use the pencil to draw on the egg. Use the brush to apply a small amount of glue to a section of the egg Add the seeds/grain/beans to the area with the glue, by either rolling the egg in the seeds or using your hands and the skewer to be more precise. You may need to do this over several days to let the glue dry on one side before decorating the other side. (For small children or when you get impatient, you can also coat the entire egg in glue and roll it in the seeds).

How to preserve hard-boiled eggs Make sure there are no cracks in the shell; keep the egg in the refrigerator for about a year. Next put it in a safe place; the inside will eventually dehydrate and form a small ball in the egg. My mom still has some that we made over 30 years ago. Yo u can begin displaying them after the first year.
The leaves are one of my favorites, and here is where the stocking comes in. Place your leaf or flower petal onto the egg and then wrap it tightly in the stocking, secure with a knot or tie a piece of string around it. Place them in the dye until they reach the desired colour, then remove the stocking and leaf. Blown-out eggs Recommended if you want to preserve your masterpieces.

Studying Abroad
Relief Boiling Add a little flair to your eggs with several common household items.
Senior in Qingdao No.1 International School of Shandong Province, Korean Qingdaonese Bryan Kyung give us his two cents about studying abroad.
I
never attended a Korean school before, only Chinese and American schools. After graduation, it is quite obvious for me that I will choose a university that has an American curriculum. In middle school, I visited my dad’s company and learned about how my dad runs his business. Later on I took some AP Micro and Macroeconomics classes at school. Unlike other students, I actually enjoyed learning the facts and knowledge behind economy and found it very interesting to know how countries are so tightly connected. Since then, I wanted to study economics when I go to college.
Bearing this in mind, I searched for schools that are famous for their economic classes and I found New York University. It is one of the most prominent universities, well-known for the high quality of its economic education. However, as a foreign student, it was hard for me to compete with American students since, for their entire high school, they prepared for SAT with English as a first language. But it is not easy for an ESL (English Second Language) student to get high scores on both SAT and TOEFL. Right now, many students, including myself, are attending after school academies (after school lessons that teach SAT and TOEFL) and spend at least 4 to 6 hours every day in order to get a good score. Students are highly stressed and over-whelmed with work from school and after school lessons, but we just accept it without any complaint. My dream life in New York City is very idealistic; I want a lighter workload and to be able to walk through Time Square with coffee in one hand and juicy hamburger in the other. Also, I want to enjoy the New Year Countdown at Time Square. With this dream in my mind, I am accepting all the stress from school and lessons for the bright and exciting life in New York.

• MAKE A SCHEDULE TO BRING A BIT OF CONTROL BACK INTO YOUR LIFE: Whenever I felt a little home sick or had to deal with culture shock, it always helped me to make a schedule. Not necessarily for every single day, but maybe choose one or two days a week, where you do one hour of sports, go out for dinner with a friend or call your parents. It really helps to give you some control over the very overwhelming life abroad.
Exploring different countries gives us a taste of life beyond our normal. After the first adventure, life can seem a bit mundane until the next destination. Elli Pillau shares her love for adventure experience travelling to a new place.
S
ome travellers prefer brief touristy stops in far off lands, but that is not for me. I love to see the world, immerse myself in different cultures, and learn from incredible people wherever I go. My love for adventure began when I was little, and has continued to grow over the years. Trips from Germany to other European countries, Russia, Egypt, and Asia all became places I have visited throughout my school years. After graduation, I wanted to see the world. When my classmates in Germany were applying to local universities, I spent hours researching programs that would allow me to study abroad. Hong Kong, Canada, and Qingdao all had programs that allowed me to do just what I wanted. While some people feel anxious when they leave home, I always felt curious and excited to start a new adventure. The transition period of living and studying in your new place will require some time. You have to
18
adapt to the food, the language, the climate, the style of education, and how to interact with the locals. Sometimes a few aspects of the place where you study will be familiar to you and can help you adapt. For instance, when I arrived at the university in Hong Kong things outside of school were all new, but the teaching style there was similar to what I had experienced in Germany. In Qingdao, it only took a few weeks to familiarize with the city and meet new friends. This is because I knew some Chinese, but the teaching style was different and it forced me to study and prepare for lessons more than I had previously. Embrace the fact that it will take some time to get comfortable with your new surrounding and work to build relationships with the people you meet. Studying abroad is a worthwhile adventure, and I would very much encourage every student to give it a try. The experience will change you, it will stretch you, and it will allow you to meet many different kinds of
people from all over the world. Plus, even when you return to your home country (if you do) the unique experiences you will have will always be part of your life. I hope you have a wonderful adventure! Advice for studying abroad: • Save up enough money before you go: While travelling abroad it is very important to manage your budget, but do not let your budget force you to stay at home. Plan in advanced how much money you might need and add a bit of extra for unexpected events and unplanned adventures.
• STAY IN TOUCH WITH HOME Even if you do not feel home sick and do not feel the need to call your family, you should always make some time to contact them. They will be very happy to hear your voice and dying to learn more about your new life. It also helps you to think about what you have seen, experienced and achieved.
LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS: This doesn’t mean that you are not supposed to be excited, but if you have very high expectations, you might get disappointed.
Elli is working as a marketing intern at the International School of Qingdao.

Hairstylist Jimmy decided to follow Jennifer’s heart and straightened her hair, and dyed it brown to make her eyes really stand out. Also several golden highlights (colour 901S) were applied to make her hair look stylish and classy. Considering Jennifer’s hair is thin, Jimmy cuts her hair with a method called “one-line” (which came from Mr Raphael Perrier’s “π Cutting Approach”), which makes the hair appear thicker. In this case, the hair was shaped round at the bottom, giving it a gentle and neat look. Lastly, several drops of COIFFANCE ELIXIR were applied to make Jennifer’s hair shinier and smoother.

She shows that crocheting with plastic bags is a fun and eco-friendly craft that everyone can enjoy.
Who?
“Sometimes, there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart is just going to cave in.” - says one of the characters in the film American Beauty while staring at a plastic bag floating in the air as it dances with autumn leaves. I have to confess that I had quite a hard time trying to figure out how such an apparently meaningless image could be so meaningful in someone's eyes. Then I met Stephanie and everything became clear. Stephanie Lyngdoh is not only the mother of three beautiful kids – she is THE master of plastic bags. She must have seen
22
their potential beauty a very long time ago, so that now she uses them to create the most extraordinary plarn pouches.
What? Now you may wonder: what is plarn? The word “plarn” literally stands for “plastic yarn”, as Stephanie has the power to crochet strips made out of plastic bags as she is using a ball of yarn. With this alternative method she crochets everything that can be crocheted: not only pouches, but also lovely little purses, iPad cases, baskets and many more.
When? Stephanie's passion for recycling has very deep roots: as a child she often questioned herself before throwing something away. Could she save it from the bin and turn it into something beautiful? Then came her time in India and finally China, where the streets are paved with plastic bags – with her crocheting skills the idea just came naturally.
Where? Her ideal location for crocheting? Everywhere. Whenever she has a spare minute, she takes a ball of plastic out of her bag, grabs her hook and starts weaving meters of plarn. She is not the lazy type and can barely manage to sit still; you know, time is creativity. That's why she loves crocheting in front of the TV and even at her husband's teachers meetings.
Why? Her handicrafts are not only considered as a little contribution to reducing the amount of plastic bags accumulated in every corner of Qingdao. In fact they are also part of a bigger charity initiative, as the proceeds from her plarn projects are entirely donated to Compassio and Blessed Homes who support refugees from Burma, and the African
The process itself is much easier than it seems; it only requires a bit of practice, three-four hours to make one and a lot of creativity. In terms of materials, what Stephanie needs to craft a plastic pouch is: ● 15 to 30 plastic bags (the amount varies according to the thickness of the bag) ● a hook for crocheting (size 6) ● an old piece of clothing for the lining ● a zip ● shoe strings or a belt as a possible shoulder strap After cutting the plastic bags into thin strips she rolls them into a ball and then starts crocheting. To keep in line with the whole “recycling” concept, Stephanie generally makes the lining of the pouch out of old t-shirts or other recycled fabrics. As for the hook and zip, she generally buys them on Taobao or at the Jimo Lu market where prices are unbeatably convenient. The most incredible thing about plastic bags is that they come in countless colours and patterns. I bet that you are now thinking “I must have my plarn pouch”, and you are right! First, because plarn is the new black; second, because every purchase you make will help someone in need. Stephanie will also be pleased to take orders for a personalized pouch. All you have to do is contact her by email (Slyngdoh@ isqchina.com), WeChat (StephLyngdoh), or Facebook (Stephanie Barton Lyngdoh) where you can also have a preview of all her fantastic works on sale in the album “One at a Time”.
你可以通过以下途径和她取得联系:邮箱 SLyngdoh@isqchina.com,微信StephLyngdoh,脸书Stephanie Barton Lyngdoh,在 名为“One at a Time”的相册里,你可以看 到Stephanie正在出售的各类编织手工艺品。

She/he should not be deprived the opportunity to make mistakes. Just let it be. This is the first step to help parents make a change in their children's education.
‘Let It Be’,
is Sometimes the Best Education
Parenting is hard and it is often complicated to find the correct method for raising a child. LEZHI Education says less control is best, by allowing children some freedom and some chances to make mistakes on their own.
O
ne day, when talking about parenting, one of my friends mentioned her colleague, a perfect lady and a typical idealist, who graduated from a famous university, with an excellent working performance, gorgeous appearance and outstanding interpersonal skills. As this lady described, when her ‘prince’ was a baby, she started to read poetry from the Tang Dynasty to him. With her deep understanding of ‘parenting and teaching’ throughout the years, she embraced the idea of ‘early learning and enlightenment’ which is the key focus in so many parenting books. As soon as her baby learned how to talk, she began to speak with her child using two languages - Mandarin and English. After years, her boy did not let her down and had showed how quick and intelligent he was. One day, a psychology research institute was gathering data from the boy’s kindergarten. They carried out an intelligence test on the children. It turned out that her boy was top
24
of his class. After the principal of kindergarten told her this news in private, the lady was so proud. She believed this proved that she was a successful mother and that because of her tireless efforts, her boy would grow up to an excellent person, maybe even an genius. Make a Child ‘obedient’ the harsh way My friend said she had been to her colleague’s place several times and she found that this lady was too concerned about her child. Even when talking to other adults, she would still keep an eye on her boy. From time to time, she would tell her child "wipe your hands, there is still water on them" or "forget about those shoes, this pair looks better and matches your coat." My friend said with a sigh, "she was too focused on being a good mom."’ Recently that ‘all-around’ mom has been having a serious problem. The older the child gets, the more
rebellious, dispirited and introverted he will become. She is very torn-up about this. She worked her heart out on parenting, so why are the results so sour. Is fate toying with her? For a Child, ‘let it be’ is the best It is clear that the mother is the root of the problem and it is very easy to change. The essential issue for this ‘strong mom' is that she is too controlling. In these cases the best solution is to ‘loosen your hands and let it be.’ Too much control or too many instructions can disrupt the development of a child. A child controlled by powerful parents would be obedient and gradually become a slave to her/his own bad habits. In her/his subconscious, this child is willing to solve this perplexing problem but doesn't have the ability to do so. This dilemma occurs constantly in adults as well.
Give Child restful freedom space If a child should experience what her/his parents wanted them to; and if that child's failures were prevented because of her/his parents, then how could the child learn self control or even learn to pay attention and focus in this type of environment. A child should have some freedom and time, and be allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. She/ he should not be deprived the opportunity to make a mistake. Just let it be. This is the first step for parents to a make change.

Our effort of climbing to the peak didn’t go in vain for the view at the top was fantastic especially the numerous windmills, which are scarce downtown. Going downhill was much easier than uphill; our son attempted to walk by himself, but my husband and I decided to take turns carrying him just to play on the safe side. Around 3pm, we left Mountain Zhaohu and headed to our second destination- Rongcheng.
On August 29th, we hit the road after packing up the car. Our first destination was Mountain Zhaohu in Haiyan where we spent four hours, far more time than we had expected. Although the scenery was great, there was one annoying problem: bugs. They kept flying
The road condition from Mountain Zhaohu to Rongcheng was good even when we got off from the expressway. Less than 3 hours later, we arrived at Dahongmen Hotel, said to be the best in Chengshan. Next morning, we set off to the animal park after finishing our breakfast in a noshery opposite of the hotel. My favorite part was the sea animal area which was built along the seaside where you could feed the animals. I strongly recommend that you buy one barrel of fish to feed them. After saying goodbye to Chengshantou, we kept traveling to our last destination - Haiyang. After 3 hours driving, we reached Aloft Haiyang Hotel. I had a strong feeling of serenity after entering into the hotel. There was a beach in front of the hotel, making it cozy and pleasing. The beach had various clams and little crabs, which you could catch for fun. Even more surprisingly the flocks of seabirds made us lose track of time and we walked farther than we planned. We were content with what we’ve caught even though it

Surrounded by sea on three sides, Chengshantou is the place that sees the sunrise earliest in Shandong Province, and was dubbed as “the place where the sun rises” in ancient times. Every time we come back home from a trip, the car always seems faster than it was when we left. Perhaps it is all because I miss the comfort of home, a harbor of warmth and safety. While fondling my sleeping son, I asked him gently, “Honey, where are we going next time?” Useful Tips for New Travellers: Mountain Zhaohu: It is quite convenient to get there by taking Weiqing Freeway Exit from Haiyang city then drive north, and then turn right at the second traffic light. Go straight along the road and turn left on Shengzhu Road (盛竹路). Drive approximately 15 minutes on Shengzhu Road (盛竹路) and drive pass Xishilangou Village Monument (西石 兰沟村碑), and then you will find the entrance of the scenic spot. Parking fee is charged by the size of vehicles. Unfortunately, dining and shopping are inconvenient inside of the sightseeing area, which means it would be better bringing enough beverage and food along with you. Rongcheng: Driving from Haiyang city towards Rongcheng is much easier and smooth. We stayed in Dahongmen Hotel (大红门宾馆), which is only a 10 minute drive from the sightseeing area. There are a

Aloft Haiyang: If you are an enthusiast of the ocean, then you cannot miss Aloft Hotel which is equipped with various entertainment facilities, plus a great location, as well as a children’s playground.
Extra Tips: There are many more issues you need take into consideration when travelling with a child, like taking common medicines, clothes, toiletries, toys to keep them occupied (I brought them pens and paper to draw) and various snacks. Oh, almost forgot the most important thing during this season- electrical mosquito-repellent incense!

W
edge-shaped defect is the most common defect on the neck of a tooth, which is shaped like a woodworking wedge, hence the name wedgeshaped defect. Previously, people thought wedgeshaped defect was caused by brushing your teeth horizontally. So bristling brushing was strongly advocated before. But it’s very difficult to clean the food scraps and remains in the concave area between the gum and teeth. Therefore, the food scraps and debris will gradually turn into tartar. Though brushing horizontally may wear the teeth surface, people still found the wedge-shaped defect. For example, it is a severe lingual defect on the upper tooth in the following picture.
Therefore, recent research has pointed out that the main reason for tooth neck defect was a long-term impact of lateral force. Finally, hard dental tissue gets excessively fatigued, breaking down from the neck and exfoliating, causing what is called a dental micro-fracture (abfration). Lateral forces are mainly from occlusion, partially from the tongue’s pressure, this could be a swallowing habit (normally an adult will lift up the tongue when swallowing, the top tip does not need to force the teeth; but people who have an open bite will use the top tip to push the lingual side when they are trying to swallow, in order to close the gap.)

f you’re adventurous enough to travel somewhere with kids in tow, then make sure you take them for a family adventure at the Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou. Also known as Xiangjiang Safari Park, it is the ideal place to have an exciting experience with your whole family. Although it is a bit expensive for entry – 250RMB per adult during weekdays (and more expensive on weekends and holidays) – this is not at all like the typical zoo you’ve likely encountered in China with sad, unkempt animals stowed away in filthy cages. It’s a zoo that sets the ideal example for how these gorgeous animals should be cared for. You can get there by taking subway line 3 to the Hangxi-Chinglong station and getting out at exit A. When you exit the subway, watch out for a group of scammers standing there,

waiting to trick you with offers of discounted tickets. They will also tell you that it takes 1 hour from the subway entrance to get to the park in an attempt to get you to ride in one of their cars or on their motorcycles. It only takes 10 minutes - just go over the pedestrian overpass you'll find a free shuttle bus that will take you to all the Chimelong attractions - the safari, the circus, the amusement park and more. Children under 1.2 meters get free admission. So for a total of 500RMB, our little family of 4 entered the park for an unforgettable adventure. We went on a weekday and were pleasantly surprised by how few people were there. It was very peaceful.
typically in their diets. At Chimelong Safari Park, they've smartly figured out that Chinese people in particular enjoy trying to give food to the creatures they encounter so they have set up stations near just about every habitat where you can purchase the appropriate food to feed to the animals, like the giraffes for example. These gentle creatures were leaning over the fence. We noticed that the other people by the giraffes were waving big, long leafy branches at them and the giraffes were leaning over the fence to eat the leaves. Many young children trying to feed the giraffes became frightened by their anvil-sized heads bowing down to their level, slurping the leaves off with their long, gray tongues.
Food is a bit pricey though, but bringing outside food is forbidden. You must leave it at a food deposit area. This is to prevent patrons from feeding the animals food that isn’t

The Chimelong Safari Park is also home to some very famous creatures - the only triplet giant pandas in the world. There are baby pictures of these guys everywhere in the park and they are absolutely adorable. But they aren't tiny little infants in an incubator anymore. They're still small and cute, but they're getting bigger by the day. There are so many interesting animals to see from chimpanzees to tigers to hippos to koalas. A great way to see some more animals here is to take a trip on the Safari on Wheels. If you have your own car, you can drive through it yourself. If not, you can take the park’s slow-moving tram ride to get up close and personal with the animals in their habitats. By the time we'd walked there, my feet felt like they were going to fall off. I was so happy to sit on that tram for the better part of an hour and watch the animals around us. It’s amazing how close can get to the animals. At one point, I could have

hat is a "friend"? Because of different values, everyone's understanding is different. For me, a friend is a friend regardless of national boundaries or age, as long as they have respect for each other, trust each other and can learn from each other. Sometimes getting jealous of his or her achievements but in return, turning those feelings into self-improvement. Also, it's important to support friends when they face failure, and also cheer them on to success. Thinking about it, how many friends like that did we have throughout our entire life? In Chinese, Wang nian zhi jiao means friendship between generations and is the best explaination to describe a friend. In Japanese, Wang nian literally means forget the year. This will make us think of Wang nian party, which means we will forget the unpleasant things happened in the past year and devote ourselves to another year of work and life. While for the Chinese, Wang nian means forget the gap of generations or age. In the book History of Later Han Dynasty there

It is very precious to have a friendship between generations. Coincidently I love making friends with different people of different ages. From my son who is 3 years old this year to the students who study in our school. My friends range from children to eighty years old senior citizens. Some friends are also hard-working teenagers and some of them are middle-aged people, like myself, who are fighting for the future. Some are already quite successful with their own business and some are elder people who have abundant life experiences. I very much enjoy talking with all of them. I not only broaden my knowledge but I also experience the charm of different life stages. I also cultivate my mind and
character and have a better understanding of the ever growing society by communicating with friends of many generations. This is really a magical experience which encourages me to continually meet new friends. From this point of view, I can't help but realize that it is very important for parents and grandparents to notice the following two ideas: 1. Encourage children to communicate with different groups of people; 2. Adjust the people who children interact with according to the children's different stage of brain development. This will help children to get in touch with new people and a new environment. Making friends with people from various age groups is a good way to develop oneself. I will try my best and keep doing it. This is also one philosophy of our school: let all our teachers and staffs make friends with students who come from different nationalities and generations. I believe this will make us better people and will make our society a better one. Translated by 曹毅 and Ross Andrew Huybregts
D
uck on a Bike" is a work by David Shannon. He is a famous American picture book writer and painter. His masterpiece "Duck on a Bike" was selected as one of the "100 books that everyone should know" by the New York Public Library. It describes a duck having various adventures on a bike, during which he meets other lively animals, such as cows, sheep, dogs, pigs and even mice. This book appeals to all children’s sense of adventure that runs deep in their little hearts! The book has a vivid realistic theme, through the animal's point of view, and depicts a real life experience for children.
Swimmy 《小黑鱼》 By Leo Lionni

"
S
wimmy" was written by Leo Lionni, who is full of wit and genuine artistic genius. This book uses watercolour painting techniques to create an underwater theme and style. A small black fish avoids being eaten by a bigger and more vicious fish. To evade the big predator in his journey, he meets a lot of new friends and finds a way to defeat the big fish, by unifying other small fish together to become the biggest fish in the ocean! It’s a vivid and lovely story, which reveals the profound theme of life and ‘self realization’.
