very year when Christmas ends, I feel very sad. Then I remember that my other favorite holiday is approaching and I suddenly feel much better. Since marrying my Chinese husband and moving to China, I’ve had the pleasure of partaking in the Chinese New Year festivities with him and his family. Then, my mother-in-law gets busy cooking around 3pm The sheer volume of food she churns out for just four adults and one toddler is astronomical. But it is the New Year, and she spares no expense on what she prepares. Most days of the year, I’m not a huge fan of my mother-inlaw’s cooking, but for Chinese New Year, she makes her very best dishes. She truly pulls out all the stops and loads up the table with an amazing array of food – abalone soup, jumbo shrimp, steamed eggs with scallop sauce, sugared yams, chicken with peppers, potato noodle salad, fresh steamed crab and clams, and much more. If you attend a Chinese New Year dinner and you wonder when the
food will end, just look for the whole steamed fish. Tradition has it that you serve your big fish dish at the end of the meal. And finally, keeping in accordance with Chinese tradition, you simply must have dumplings. These come at the very end of the meal. By then, you are so stuffed you can't even fathom eating another bite. But you must at least have one or else it would be rude. Should you have the good fortune of being invited to one of these gastronomically divine dinners, my advice to you is don’t wear fitted pants, for if you do, you will be loosening your belt all night. Wear something stretchy because you’ll feel like you’ll burst. Elastic waistbands are your very best friends during this holiday. Drinking is a big part of our night too. In my family in America, when we have Thanksgiving or Christmas, we always start drinking at least an
FEATURES hour or two before we start eating. But in Chinese culture, you must wait until it’s time to eat to pop open the bottles of Tsingtao beer or pour out shots of baiju. If you don’t drink alcohol, it’s quite all right to clink a cup of water or juice against the glasses of the drinkers at the table. “Gan bei” is what you will hear, which is a form of “cheers”.
If you ever wondered why Chinese people always pour their beer into what Westerners typically use for our juice in the morning, now you know why. Imagine if everyone chugged down entire bottles of beer with every toast! As the food and drinks flow, you’ll probably be expected to watch Chinese New Year specials on the TV. Unlike most of the daily offerings on Chinese channels, the television specials for the holiday are really vibrant and highly entertaining. Each year, I’ve been taken by surprise. One year, Celine Dion sang a song in Chinese and another year, Jackie Chan was part of a special martial arts performance. There’s one more element that makes the holiday complete: fireworks. For my first year here, my father-in-law bought a bunch and dragged us outside to light them off. It was a bit too noisy for me. Once he saw that I much preferred to watch them from our window, he hasn’t dragged me out into the freezing night air to light them again ever since. What’s amazing about the fireworks is the constant din of pops and booms throughout the evening. If you listen carefully when none are going off under your own windows, you can clearly hear them everywhere else in the city. Fireworks are magical and exciting, until it’s time to sleep of course – especially if you have a baby or small child in the house. But whether you’re a fan of fireworks or not, I think you’ll find that celebrating Chinese New Year is a total blast.

15 Healthy Resolutions to Make in 2015 With the New Year beginning, Jennifer Raskin set up 15 easy and achievable steps to improve your health and daily life in 2015. Make sure you bring out all your best to give yourself and your family an amazing New Year.
W
hat does every New Year have in common besides a big celebration? Everyone begins it with the best intentions for honoring the resolutions they have made. Sure, we all start off on the right foot, but somewhere later in January, or perhaps even in February or March, we wander off track. It happens to us all, but the good news is we’re starting another new year which is the perfect opportunity to adopt one or all of these 15 very manageable resolutions into your daily life to reshape your body, mind and soul and
14
make 2015 your healthiest year yet!
1.
Get Busy Being active is so important for our physical and mental well-being. And you don’t need to be a gym-nut to get in shape. Find something you enjoy and do it every day, even for just 10 minutes. Whether you take walks or dance with your children to your favorite old songs, you’ll be doing your body and mind a huge favor.
2.
Eat Better Don’t start the new year off with a diet! Big mistake! You’ll only set yourself up for failure if
you put all kinds of restrictions on what you can and can’t eat. Instead, aim to eat healthier FOREVER. Like pizza? Great! Have only one slice instead of the whole pie. Work more fruits and vegetables into your daily intake too, and you’ll be reaping all the benefits.
3.
Stop Drinking Your Calories Whether you love soda – and yes, that means diet soda too – or you religiously pour cream and sugar into your coffee, you need to put an end to it. Extra calories from the things you drink add up over time. At first, you can try
to reduce the amount of high-calorie drinks you consume gradually until you finally cut them entirely out of your life.
4.
Water. Water. Water Drink water. Add a slice of lemon for more flavor and a boost of vitamin C. Your
FEATURES body needs water and guess what? Water has no calories, even with a slice of lemon included!
are, stay close to home and try eating at a restaurant that has a cuisine you haven’t tasted yet. Pick up knitting or painting. The more diverse experiences you have, the more enriched your life will become.
7.
5.
Laugh More They say laughter is the best medicine. Try to see the humour in the things around you instead of letting stress get you down. Ever notice how good you feel after you have a good laugh? There’s a reason for that! According to helpguide. org, laughter relaxes your whole body, boosts your immune system, triggers endorphins (the body’s natural feel-good chemicals), and it protects the heart too. Plus, laughing with others is more powerful than laughing alone. So grab your friends and family and find something that tickles your funny bone.
6.
Try More New Things Now is your chance to embrace something fun and exciting, like a new hobby or even a new kind of food. Get in touch with your adventurous side and go somewhere different. There are so many places to explore in the world. Or if you’re happy where you
Stop Smoking! In China, there are so many smokers. If you’re one of them, the New Year is a great time to kick this dirty habit. Quitting cold turkey, or stopping instantly, can be challenging but these days, there are many products on the market to help with smoking cessation. Do it now – your lungs will thank you later!
8.
Sit Less The National Heart Foundation found that adults who sit less throughout the day have less risk of early death from cardiovascular disease. Sitting less can add years to your life. So what are you waiting for? Stand up while you finish reading this article!
9.
Take Time For Yourself Sometimes, we’re so busy doing things for everyone else that we don’t take some time out for ourselves. When you feel burnt out from taking
care of your family, take a moment to rejuvenate for yourself. The key here is to do something that makes YOU feel relaxed and to wholly embrace that experience.
10.
Learn Something New If you’ve always wanted to get into computer programming, or master speaking a new language, make it happen this year. Sign up for classes to further your career too. The more you learn, the stronger your mind becomes. Knowledge is power.
11.
Read More Whether you like current events from the newspaper or a curling up with a nice novel, just remember that reading is feeding your brain. In fact, if you read before going to bed each night, it helps regulate your body’s internal clock, preparing you for sleep. And good sleep is priceless.
12.
Spend More Time With the
Kids Sure, they always want to play when you’re in the middle of composing a work-related email, or cooking dinner, but don’t be so quick to brush your children off. Choose a particular time of day to make it family time and honor it every day. Play games, run through the park, make a craft or read stories together. Children grow up way too fast, and you and your children will feel so much more fulfilled when you make the most of this precious time together.
13.
Be Grateful Complain less and find at least one thing to like about where you are in life, either physically or mentally. Somewhere, someone has much less than you do. Keep that in mind and you’ll be counting your blessings daily.
14.
Pay It Forward Try to help someone out when they could use a hand. It could be a stranger who is struggling to carry a bunch of bags up the stairs or it could be a friend who needs a boost. Do these things without expecting anything in return, and should you be offered anything, ask them to pay it forward to someone else in need.
15.
Stop Living in the Past It’s not healthy to always be thinking about what could have been or what you could have done differently. Leave the past where it is and forgive yourself instead of beating yourself up. Move forward into the New Year with the determination to be a better person from what you learned in the years before. After all, it’s a New Year and you have the power to make it as awesome as you want.

Hair Design Hairstylist Mark suggested a creative cut method called “I-POP”, one of their 2015 hair trends, shorting her hair to be about jaw length. With a small slope and subtle layering and combining now very popular high angle bangs (divided by 2:8), the new hairstyle makes her face look smaller and more exquisite. To maintain the density texture of the hair, Mark also cuts the end of outer contour hair into a jagged shape and highlights some of the hair to flaxen to create a “movable” look. After the hair cut, the stylist blow dries her hair and applied some Sebastian Thickefy Foam to her hair, making it look naturally fluffy. Lastly, several

Natural and healthy was what Natasha exuded when we first met her. She applies basic skin care treatment and uses mascara and eyeliner to highlight her eyes. Makeup artist Nana chose a nature-colour theme for her. She applied an earth toned eye shadow and a light red lipstick to make her face even livelier. And to highlight her eyes while maintaining a natural look, Nana used a brown eyebrow powder to match her eye and cheek colour.
drops of Sebastian Trilliant Thermal Protector and Shimmer Complex are applied to make Natasha’s hair look shiner and vibrant.

As a kindergarten teacher and a mom I have field-tested a lot of playdough recipes. My favorite recipe is easy and if sealed in an airtight container will last several weeks. The children enjoyed making the playdough as much as playing with it. What you will need: 1 cup of flour ½ cup of salt 2 table spoons cream of tartar 1 tablespoon of oil 1 cup water Mix the first 4 ingredients togeth-

Turn off the heat and put the dough on a flat surface and knead for five minutes. You can add food coloring at this point to color the dough. Once you have you dough you are ready to create. Use some for a sculpture activity or get out the playdough molds and you are ready for fun!

ONSIDES FOOTBALL VISITS INDIA

Qingdao Family takes a look at OnSide Football, a Qingdao based organisation founded to spread the love of football to different communities. Donald Lyngdoh recalls his trip to India to coach the local football team in the village of Ammutong.
O
n December 27th, 2014, several of us teachers from the International School of Qingdao headed down from Shillong, in remote Northeast India, to a small village called Ammutong. I was looking forward to this trip all year, as my family and I were able to introduce this part of India to several good friends who live and work here in Qingdao with us. After a 3-hour twisty and windy road experience, where the number of people in the car outmatched and outweighed the car’s size, we arrived in the small beautiful village of Ammutong. Ammutong is located on the border of Bangladesh, at the foothills of the Himalayas. During our time in
24
the village, OnSides Football held a daylong football camp for athletes from the village. There were about 45 athletes in attendance ranging from ages 14 to 25. Two other friends and I founded OnSides Football in early 2014 for the simple love of football. We wanted it to be an organisation that impacts communities through sport. At the beginning we haphazardly put OnSides together and encountered a mountain of paperwork as we attempted to make it completely official, but later failed to register it legally. Nonetheless, as we tried to approach it as a fun and alternative project where we can use football to interact with communities, we started making progress. As teachers who do not earn much and cannot afford to spend extra on our interest and hobbies, we focused on creative means to raise money for our organisation. My wife, Stephanie Lyngdoh, sells homemade jam, crocheted hats and bags made out of wool and plastic bags to help OnSides get on its feet. Knowing how hard it is to ask people to give us money, we resorted to relying on generous donations and partnerships with various local and inter-
national organisations. So now we have been able to participate in our second football service camp. The trip to India, where we were able to visit the State of Meghalaya in Northeast India, was combined with the Christmas Holidays. To get there, we took a 3-hour flight from Delhi, and then a 4-hour jeep ride up the windy mountains. Meghalaya is well known for its natural beauty and scenery, delicious food and unique people— the Khasis. Besides experiencing the local lifestyle, cuisine and shopping, we made several trips to the surrounding villages and local tourist attractions, such as the sacred forests of Meghalaya where we were joined by some wild cows while hiking through the forest. We visited some awesome natural bridges made from hanging root by the local people who manipulate roots of trees to form strong bridges. Visiting over Christmas was a treat. The town was lit up with lights; people, young and old, dressed in their best clothes and numerous Church communities held feasts available for the public to attend. We definitely had our fill of tea, having as
FEATURES many as 5-6 cups per day as this region is home to world famous black teas such as Assam tea. The 27th of December was memorable and quite an experience. The village clearly had never had any coaches come in and conduct such an event. Everybody came out to greet and observe our coaching. Zack and Katie, the main coaches were amazed at the enthusiasm, organisation, diligence and skills of the players despite the condition of the field, which was definitely a place where one could have gone digging for rocks. We arrived with no expectations; the only thing we knew was that we would coach and play for a couple of hours, talk and then head back to the city. However, we did not expect the awesome welcome we received with flags flying high and also a delicious feast that the village prepared for us. In the morning Zack Barron, Katie Peters, Eric Kang and I taught the U-14 and over 18 groups. In the afternoon, Zack, Katie and I focused on coaching the adults while Beth Shimer, another ISQ teacher, and Stephanie acted as photographers, videographers and spent time getting to know the children and women of the village. It really is cool to see the connection that has now been born between our adopted city Qingdao and this small village in remote Northeast India. This has been a great trip. The memories will definitely stay long with each one of us!
ONSIDES FOOTBALL

PARENTING
Chinese people pay a lot of attention to women’s recovery after childbirth. Unlike Britain’s Princess Kate who could wear high heels and carry Prince George to meet the media with her husband Prince William the day after giving birth to him, Chinese women will traditionally stay indoors for a month of postnatal care. This is called “zuo yue zi”, which literally means to “Sit for a month”. Suki Li investigates this Chinese postnatal tradition.
“Y
ue zi” can be traced back to the Western Han Dynasty two thousand years ago. According to Chinese medicine theory, a woman’s pelvis is opened after giving birth, and without proper care this can lead to “cold” entering her body. As such, when the confinement period is finished and the mother's pelvis is closed again, the “cold” will be locked inside her body, which is known as “postpartum wind”, or con-
28
finement sickness. Apparently many mothers will suffer from joint pain when they get older, and some even experience this symptom soon after their confinement period. It is also widely believed that “confinement sickness can only be cured during confinement”, which means that if a mother suffers from this kind of sickness, she has to wait until her next confinement to have treatment. This is because the pelvis will only open again after giving birth, which is the
only chance to expel the “cold”. For thousands of years, this postnatal care was provided by the baby’s two grandmothers, who would follow a number of traditions such as not allowing the new mother to bathe for a month. However, in modern times, young people’s views on postnatal confinement are changing, though their elders will persist in their traditional
PARENTING views on this and on raising children, which sometimes results in inter-generational conflict. Moreover, providing postnatal care is a very tiring job and many young mothers will now avoid troubling grandparents. In 2000, postnatal attendants (yuesao) began to appear in Mainland China. They usually had one to three months of training, and could help take care of the baby, but often would not be able to show the mother the same level of care. Some mothers also felt that employing a yuesao reduced the potential for mother-child interaction. Consequently in more recent times, a new trend of postnatal care centres has begun to prosper in China filling this market gap. Statistics show that Shanghai leads the way with more than 60 such postnatal care centres, while Beijing and Guangzhou now have over 30 and 20 postnatal care centres respectively. In Taiwan the concept is even more developed, with around 50% of new mothers choosing to stay in a care centre after giving birth. In Qingdao, there are currently three postnatal care centres. With health care professionals taking care of all their needs, new mothers in these centres are able to enjoy a more relaxed time with their babies, learn about parenting techniques, do post birth exercises to help recover their physical conditions in a short period of time. Fan Pingli, a Singaporean who previously served as the general manager of an international medical group in Greater China and who was overseeing ten hospitals in Shanghai, saw this as a business opportunity. Around a year ago, he opened Qingdao’s first foreign postnatal care centre called Mooncott near the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre. These centres include international management and nursing standards, a team of gynecology,
pediatric and TCM doctors, a tento-one staff-to-guest ratio, scientific nutritional catering, a postpartum body repair center, and various mother-child activities. Mooncott has not surprisingly already proven popular with Qingdao’s mothers with bookings having been made through to next year. Qingdao’s postnatal confinement habits seem to be quietly changing.

his Christmas we found ourselves in Qingdao but still wanted to experience a bit of the holiday spirit. On Christmas day we packed up the car and headed across the bay to Huangdao. We used Ctrip to book a great deal on rooms at The Hilton Golden Beach and packed up two cars with children and plenty of toys to keep them entertained. Entering the hotel we knew we were in for a treat! The check-in staff was friendly and helpful and the lobby was decorated beautifully for the holiday. The kids enjoyed making crafts in the room and playing together for the afternoon while the adults enjoyed a nice bottle of wine and the luxury of knowing we wouldn’t have to be cleaning up.

Ready for an untraditional Christmas dinner we headed to the Jiao Ao Chinese restaurant in the hotel where we booked a private dining room. It was great not having to worry about the five children in our party annoying other diners and even better the children could enjoy watching Christmas movies from the private television in the dining room. After breakfast we split up to explore what Huangdao had to offer. We checked out the Wild Animal Park and got up close and personal with baby lions. We also explored the pool area where the helpful staff brought out swim rings and even toys for the children to enjoy in the very generously sized kiddie pool.
In the end we found ourselves wishing we had booked more than two nights and my daughter said she would like to live there forever. If only!
A ten-minute drive away is Huangdao’s own Jusco shopping plaza with plenty of food options and a great play area for the children. Mom enjoyed manicures while the children played only steps away in the well-appointed playground. In the end we found ourselves wishing we had booked more than two nights and my daughter said she would like to live there forever. If only! For New Year’s Eve we headed in the other direction and stayed the night at the Grande Metropark Qingdao. This is a place we had been to a few times before to enjoy a night away and the attached hot spring resort. The rooms were nice and comfortable and included tickets to the hot springs. This resort was a hit with my daughter and she enjoyed several hours swimming around in the springs. The adults on this trip were less impressed because the water was not as clean and warm as we had hoped. Even several of the springs were not in working order. We felt it could have been much better.
There isn’t much to do around the resort so we stayed in and ordered room service while we watched National Geographic Channel and tried our best to stay up till midnight. The next morning we had no desire to extend the stay after experiencing the overcrowded buffet breakfast. We were thankful that another family agreed to share their table with us, as there was no other available seating. The best thing about our staycation in Qingdao was spending time with the dear friends we have made in our home away from home. After all, it doesn’t really matter where you are but who you are with when it comes to making the holidays special.

A Chinese Proverb II

aybe it’s because I’m engaged in the education industry, I’m so often asked: "how should you educate children?" Based on their respective aptitudes, I think there are many ways. But one thing is common, teaching them the necessary survival skills. In the 21st century, as long as you have these four skills, ‘specialized knowledge, IT skill, English, and second language speaking ability‘, you could manage with ease in every field. The future is an era of information and technology. We will be expected to gather information and make international connections. If your IT and English skills are not up to the standard, then you will surely be left behind in the workplace. There are three aspects you have to consider when it comes to choosing a ‘major’. Firstly, what you are good at. Secondly, what you are interested in. Thirdly, what you want to do for the rest of your life. Now let’s get to the point, I will introduce another Chinese proverb which is about life direction and career choice. 鸡口牛后 (jīkouniúhòu)—Better be a dog's head than a lion's tail.
32
This proverb comes from Records of the Grand Historian-Su Qin Biographies. It means that it’s better to be in a clean dog’s mouth, than in a big and smelly lion’s bottom. It’s a metaphor to show it’s better to be in a situation where you could be in charge rather than being controlled by other people, even if you are part of something bigger. During the late Warring States Period, Shang Yang's new policy rapidly increased the national strength of the State of Qin. In response to this, the other six States (Chu, Yan, Qi, Zhao, Han, Wei) adopted two different approaches in handling their diplomatic relations with Qin. One was in favour of the six States working as one unit against Qin; the other, instead, supported a cooperation with Qin. Lobbyist Su Qin was in favor of the first manner. When he tried to convince the emperor of Han he said to him: “there is a saying which says that it’s better to be in a clean dog’s mouth, than in a big and smelly lion’s bottom, If Han chooses to yield to Qin even I will feel shame on you.” The emperor of Han thought what Su Qin said was extremely wise and he replied that: “I would rather die than yielding to Qin!” Su Qin successfully used this way to persuade the other five countries. They eventually formed a coalition led by Chu. The six isolated Qin, and his influence had been destroyed.
People have different ideas towards this idiom according to different value orientations. If you choose to be in a smaller environment, you could get more chance to train your decisionmaking ability while you could learn more of a bigger enterprise culture, and accumulate more experience if you choose to be in a bigger environment. Which way is the right way? To be honest, I’m confused as well. But for the young generation who will shoulder the great mission of the 21st century, I sincerely hope they can fearlessly choose to be a leader because many people are dying to get into a big firm.

Those pains may all have the same cause - the joints that operates the jaw, according to Dr. Neil Gottchrer. Gottchrer claims Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome, also known as TMJ, causes many unsovled pain problems many people suffer from. The head, face and neck are subject to chronic pain more often than other parts of the body. Supplemented with figures by Dr. Olive Liao.

Fig 1: The neck, head, jaw joint and teeth are connected like a chain. (From Dr Dawson's Book) Fig 1
Fig 3: (By Dr. Williams) Typical leverage change, from class 3 lever to class 1 lever, front teeth are subjected to excessive force. When the back teeth contact earlier then they should in the month, it is considered as the class 1 lever’s hinge, causing excessive force on the teeth and abnormal muscle function (facial muscle tension, especially those surrounding eyes and jaws). Also it’s similar to the swivel of seesaw, leading to joint displacement, escessive wear, and a possiblilty of fracture or can even cause teeth to shift.

Fig 2: Joints not in harmony with bite. When the teeth try to fit together, the condyle gets displaced. Therefore, the related ligaments and muscles are stretched. This can cause stress on the jaw and head, and even develop future problems. Fig 2
