Time for Bed!
Laura Roark is here to tell you why sleep is such an important factor in the whole family’s happiness and success. Laura Roark
A
h, it’s been a long day reaping the rewards of raising the future hope of our beautiful planet. And it’s finally time to get the darling little angels to bed. But today’s demanding world is chipping away at more and more of our sleep and at what cost? Why do we need sleep? Humans spend about one third of their life sleeping but this time is far from unproductive. It plays a direct role in how energetic and successful the other two thirds will be. During deep sleep hormones regulating growth and appetite are released setting the stage for healthy growth and weight. During REM sleep the brain is busy consolidating memories and making important connections for healthy brain development.
14
In 2009, American and French researchers determined that brain events called “sharp wave ripples” are responsible for consolidating memory. The ripples also transfer learned information from the hippocampus to the neo-cortex of the brain, where long-term memories are stored. Sharp wave ripples occur mostly during the deepest levels of sleep. What happens if we don’t get enough sleep? Children who do not get enough sleep can have impaired attention, alertness, concentration, reasoning and problem solving. Although research is far from complete on what happens to the body during sleep, what we do know is what happens to the body if we do
not sleep. The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off the coast of Alaska, the Challenger space shuttle disaster and the Chernobyl nuclear accident have all been attributed to human errors in which sleep-deprivation played a role. Children who do not get enough sleep can have impaired attention, alertness, concentration, reasoning and problem solving. Their emotions can become erratic and you might notice they seem overexcited and hyperactive. Prolonged sleep deprivation can also lead to serious health problems and may contribute to depression. So how much sleep do we need? From birth to adulthood the amount of sleep our body needs changes significantly. Newborns sleep most of
Getting to bed Getting your child to bed can be much easier if a consistent bedtime routine is established in a relaxing sleep environment. It’s important to put younger children to bed tired but not asleep as this allows them to learn how to “self-sooth”. When children learn to get to sleep on their own it helps them to easily fall back into each consecutive sleep cycle during the night, lessening the dependency on a care-giver to be there and setting the stage for lifelong healthy sleep habits. Dimming the lights and turning off any form of media is a good way to start. Right before sleep the body’s temperature naturally drops, creating a drowsy state. Taking a warm bath can help this process as when the body cools off after the bath people naturally feel sleepy. And of course ending a busy day with calming bedtime story never hurts. Children associate different objects, people and activities with going to sleep. These are called sleep associations. Sleep association can have a big impact on the ability of babies, children and adults to drift off to sleep. It’s important to talk to children about the importance of sleep, refrain from using sleep as a form of punishment and to role model good sleeping habits. As we head back to school it’s essential to remember that sleep plays an important role in childhood development. Children sleep better; therefore learn better, with relaxing, positive and consistent sleep routines.
Children who do not get enough sleep can have impaired attention, alertness, concentration, reasoning and problem solving.

Take time out for the kids
Moving takes a lot of work. I worked for months to sort, pack, sell, and store our belongings. Even so the last two weeks were crazy. My daughter kept asking me, “when will you not be so busy, Mommy? I want you to play with me.” We planned one night at a hotel and took the time to focus completely on our kids. I had to be away from the house so I couldn't keep sneaking off to pack some more! It was hard to take the time off, but worth it to show them they still come first.

I was surprised by how I hadn't thought this through before moving, and was even more interested to see how it specifically manifested in my kids. My four year old daughter was overwhelmed by shopping. She wanted to buy everything, every time we went to the store. My two year old son asked repeatedly to return to “Matthew's home”. Read up on what common re-entry shock symptoms are and think about how they might apply to your children. A good place to start is The Culture Blend, a website by Jerry Jones.
A few weeks after we returned to our home country and had settled into living with my in-laws, we decided it might be good for us to get away for a couple days without the kids. I was nervous about it, but needed the break. Two hours before we planned to leave, my son went into meltdown. Since there was no fever or other symptoms, we decided to continue our plans and call to check on him a few hours later. He was fine. Looking back I definitely wouldn't go somewhere they couldn't reach us if there was a problem, but since we were staying nearby I'm glad we went. The two days of break were wonderful.
Transition is not a straight line. The stages may surprise you in their timing. My daughter had seemingly transitioned so easily, I was startled when 2 months after moving I held her sobbing for all she had left behind. After a few days she had returned to her usual sunny self, but it was a clue to me that there was more going on inside them than I realized. I couldn't expect her to transition at the same speed or in the same way that I did, but I could be their security through it all.
They go through reentry shock too. Look for how it might manifest differently in your kids than you may expect
Be sensitive to their needs but not controlled by them
Kids are resilient and adaptable, but unpredictable

Old Wives’ Tales from Around the World
Basically, Koreans very firmly believe that turning on a fan while in an enclosed room as you sleep at night will lead to your doom.
Jennifer Raskin shares her understanding of the Old Wives’ Tales told all round the world. Are they based on fact or not? Is it right to follow them? Here are the answers.
E
very country has them. Old wives’ tales, or a common belief about something that is not based on facts and is most often false. China seems to have so many revolving around pregnancy and seeing as I moved to Qingdao when I was pregnant with my first child, I became quite familiar with some of them. One of my favourites was when I heard Chinese people thought pregnant women shouldn’t eat chocolate because it would make the baby’s skin dark. If this logic were true, every single mom I have ever known would have had a dark-skinned child. Lest you think I’m picking on China, let’s talk about one of the many from my home country, America. From as early on as I can remember, I was always led to believe that if I opened

my umbrella indoors, I’d have bad luck. But all over Asia, all I’ve ever seen on a rainy day is people opening their umbrellas inside to help them to dry. Even in my own home, my husband will open his umbrella. His parents will too if they come over on a rainy day. This used to make me cringe in fear, but I quickly began to see that this old wives’ tale was pure nonsense. The concept of old wives' tales has existed for centuries. Old wives' tales began in the oral tradition of storytelling and took off from there. These superstitious stories passed down from generation to generation were often told to discourage unwanted behavior, usually in children, or were used as folk cures for ailments ranging from toothaches to dysentery.
Every country the world over has its’ own stories. In Norway for example, if a woman has a boyfriend, she shouldn’t knit him a sweater before they marry or else he’ll leave her. Maybe it has more to do with the pattern of the sweater than the sweater itself though. Also, don’t whistle whilst indoors in Russia. They say it makes the same sound as wind blowing the household’s money away. In Sweden, stepping on a manhole cover with the letter ‘A’ on it means bad luck in love or bad luck on that day. ‘A’ stands for “avlopp” which is Swedish for “sewer,” but in the superstition, ‘A’ means “avbruten” Swedish for “broken off”, as in “broken off love.” However, if you step on a manhole cover with the letter ‘K’ on it (‘K’ stands for “kärlek” which means love),
it means good luck in love, or good luck on that day. Of course, my all-time favourite old wives’ tale comes from Korea. I lived in Seoul prior to moving to China. At the time, my brother also lived and worked there. He warned me about something called Korean Fan Death. Basically, Koreans very firmly believe that turning on a fan while in an enclosed room as you sleep at night will lead to your doom. As silly as that sounds, there is a slight kernel of truth to this belief because fans don’t produce their own air. They blow the air behind them forcefully outwards. So if it’s very hot and all your doors and windows are closed in your room, then the air that is blowing from the fan will be hot. The resulting effect is much like an oven, and instead of cooling you down, the fan will heat you up. But that’s not superstition. That’s science. As for the rest of the old wives’ tales out there, there is no scientific backing to prove any of them to be true. So if you’re pregnant, eat your chocolate. And if you’re Norwegian, knit up those sweaters.

This Weekend…Get Away
The summer heat is fading while the fresh and sunny autumn days are luring people, who have been avoiding the heat, out from their houses. In fact why not take the weekend to get away from the city? REDSTAR recently spent a weekend in Huangdao and experienced its serenity.
I
t took less than an hour’s drive for us to get to Fourpoints by Sheraton in Huangdao. From outside, the twin buildings of the hotel stood out in the bright sunlight while the interior design of the hotel was simple but lively. Looking through the huge lobby windows, we could see beds on the patio by the swimming pool, where we could sit and bask lazily in the sun, drink coffee or read, while our children played around us. Wonderful! In fact our colleagues' children Teo and Guoguo could not stop chasing each other around in the lobby in excitement since we arrived there. After checking in and unpacking, we were all hungry. So we went to the first floor to enjoy a delicious buffet
20
for lunch. Their Eatery Signature Restaurant provided a buffet with both Western food and Asian cuisine. Here, you can find steaks, crab, shrimps, pizza, cake and coffee, as well as Japanese cuisine such as sushi and salmon fish. Of course, you can also find plenty of Chinese dishes here; the chefs are ready to cook for you on the spot, even handmade noodles can be prepared at a moments notice. It is worth mentioning that the restaurant has a rich selection of seasonal seafood, all of which come from the ocean in front of the hotel to ensure freshness. If you want, the restaurant also serves all kinds of traditional Chinese specialties for your preference. And they can also
provide private rooms for your dining experience. Waking up from our short after lunch nap, we put on our swimsuits and got ready for a dip in the pool. The hotel's swimming pool was located on the third floor. There was a large pool in the middle and the water in it was clean and clear with a comfortable water temperature suitable for all our swimming enthusiasts. In addition, there were two children’s pools located next to it. In the 60 cm pool, young children could stand comfortably in it without fear of deep water and the parents who usually swam with their kids could relax and supervise their kids from the edge of the pool while watching them learn to swim on their own.
After swimming, people relaxed in their own way. Some of them lay on the beds and just enjoyed the scenery of the countryside; while some took the time to sweat it out in the gym, others simply grabbed a cup of coffee and read in the lobby. Being far away from the hustle and bustle of the city and being exposed to this suburban tranquility helped us to relax both in mind and body. After enjoying a lazy afternoon of quiet; it was time to liven things up. When the sun started to sink from the sky, barbecue grills were set up by the poolside and everything became lively. Time for a Barbecue Party! The children of our colleagues happily ran about on the patio, while the adults drank and ate. Having a barbecue buffet outdoors created a sense of freedom for all of us. Everyone was singing and dancing to the beat of one of the hotel singers and chatting with our colleagues made us feel closer to one other. As night fell the singer finished up and as we looked up at the starry sky, things began to quiet down again. All we could hear was the peaceful sounds of waves far out to sea.
乘
In the soft beds of the hotel, we slept soundly in the quiet evening. However the next day, the kids were eager to go downstairs for a bike ride. The hotel provided us with not only a normal bicycle, but also a kind of conjoined twin bike to rent. The winding streets of the small park in front of the hotel were perfect for cycling and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery while riding. The parents traveling with their children could either ride a bike with their children or just enjoy spending time with them.
But before we knew it our pleasant weekend was finally over. Departing back to the city, we all missed the serenity of Huangdao, but felt relaxed and refreshed with a sense of freedom; exactly what we needed after our busy week. So remember, occasionally it is good to give yourself a break and just get away!

Meeting Diverse Learning Needs in Qingdao
I
n education, the individual student’s academic and social needs hold the primary focus of a teacher’s work in the classroom. Each student enters the classroom equipped with various tools to engage in the content and acquire understanding. However, occasionally a student enters the classroom with a learning disability that impedes him or her from reaching the level of learning that the student is intrinsically capably of attaining. Through careful observation, diagnostics, planning, and the carrying out of a strategy that includes the student, parents,
22
teachers, and academic services, the student can experience success regardless of learning obstacles. In the United States and now in Qingdao, I have been fortunate to have a role in schools that allows me to identify students in need of academic services and offer the help required for all students to realize and maintain their success in the classroom. In order to offer student assistance in and out of the classroom, identification of the learning disability first takes place. A learning disability causes the brain to process and receive information differently than
a typical student. In most cases, the causing factor remains unknown, and each student requires individualized learning plans to address the unique ways in which his or her disability is represented in the classroom. These academic struggles are usually noticed when a child begins school and has trouble in reading, math, writing, reasoning, listening, and speaking. As a result, some students have difficulty in a traditional educational format and require a flexible framework to meet educational standards.
Working as an Academic Services teacher gives me the opportunity to reach out to students and offer them the specialized support they need to learn to their greatest potential. A key aspect of providing academic support focuses on developing a plan created by the student, parents, teachers, and academics services that establishes the necessary accommodations in a class for a student to succeed. Accommodations are support and services provided to help a student access the general education curriculum and validly demonstrate learning without changing the rigor of the content. They are divided into six categories (presentation, response, timing, setting, test scheduling, and other). A few examples of accommodations include allowing a student use an audio recorder, having the same textbook at home and at school, colour-coding lessons and study material, reducing line items on a handout, and providing extra time during tests. In most cases, only a few pieces of the learning puzzle are missing, and academic services are able to provide what students need to succeed. The learning plans tailored for students may be in place for a short time or throughout their school career. “With the right support and intervention people with learning disabilities can succeed in school and go on to be successful later in life.” LDRAC (Learning Disabilities Research Association of China). I am privileged to partner with the community at the International School of Qingdao in proactively identifying students’ needs whether the need is apparent or subtle and providing the tools they need to see success. Our main objective is to care for all the needs of students throughout their entire academic journey. I am excited to go to work every day as it feels incredibly rewarding to watch children with learning disabilities reach their full educational potential.

riving regulations in China are similar to those in the USA but how people actually drive in practice is a different matter altogether. Adjusting your driving habits to local norms isn’t necessary, but once you know what to expect things can go much more smoothly.
Licensed to drive I wouldn’t recommend learning to drive in China but if you are an experienced driver and licensed in your home country it’s just a simple matter of getting used to the way things are done here. International drivers licenses are not recognized in China so you will need to have a valid drivers license from your home country. You need an official translation of your passport and drivers license and an appointment at the Drivers License Bureau where you can get your health check up and register for your computerized driving theory test in the same building. You will need to take the comput-

The test is available in English, Chinese, Russian, German, Spanish, Korean and Japanese languages. Once the test has been passed your license will be ready in a few days and is good for 5 years from the date of issue. Study manuals are available at the test center and study guides are available in English online. Getting your own wheels When you are licensed to drive the next step is getting your own set of wheels. Currently there are no restrictions on car buying in Qingdao so it’s a simple matter of finding the right car at the right price and making a deal. As with most car dealerships worldwide, price is negotiable and it’s best to take someone who knows what they are doing to get the best price.

TIP: Painting Most homes in Qingdao use emulsion paint, and if you’re not careful, the old coat will peel. To make sure you don’t end up with scarred walls, be sure to keep your paint roller wet. If the walls do peel, put down the roller, let it dry, and work it over with a detail brush.

There is no shortage of sculptures, paintings and calligraphy, mixed in with a few unique finds – antique instruments and clocks, propaganda from the Cultural Revolution, and even decorative weaponry, if that’s your thing. The stores are for art appreciators and creators alike. There are beautiful paintings for those seeking art, framing stores for those who already have it, and painting, calligraphy and woodworking supplies for those who want to create it themselves. The products here are genuine works of art, and so the prices are noticeably higher than the Qinghai Flea market but don’t be afraid to barter the cost down. If you’re looking for something cheaper, though, the streets are filled with vendors selling knickknacks that are a bit less unique for a lot less money. TIP: Putting Up Frames If you are interested in hanging something on a wall, you have two

options. Option one is to use a sticky hanger (there are several varieties available) and the other is to make a hole. Sticky hangers are notorious for falling off the walls, so don’t hang anything heavy or breakable with a sticky hanger. If you have something heavy or fragile (or want to hang a shelf) you are going to need to drill a hole and use anchors. The vast majority of walls in China require you to use a “hammer drill” to make holes. If any other tool is used, it can easily mean breaking the tool or chipping the wall.

Brushing your Teeth for their protection part 1 刷牙护牙第一步 D
octor Olive from Gentle Dental discuses different techniques for brushing your teeth.
1.
techniques for brushing
Brushing without water If you don’t want to gargle or use water for your brush, put the toothpaste directly onto the brush and brush for over 3 minutes. The reason why some people don’t use water is to avoid bubbles as sometimes a vomiting reaction can be caused by the stimulus of bubbles. Horizontal Brushing It’s an effective way to get rid of gum and tartar. But please pay attention to what you are doing. The action is not like pulling a saw and should include at least 2-teeth in one brushing action. Be sure that half of the brush is brushing the gum for the purposes of massaging them and don’t stop if they bleed. Bleeding indicates there is a great deal of bacterium, germs and inflammation; so more cleaning is needed not less. The bleeding will stop after a few days. Vertical and Rotating away This technique cleans the tooth surface and interdental space. With your wrist twist, from the gum to the tooth surface, especially the inside side area of the lower teeth. Note: A combination of vertical and rotating brushing with horizontal brushing is
30
best. If no rotating or no horizontal brushing but only vertically brushing, there will be tartar buildup on the verge of gum line or between the teeth. An analogy is that stairs can’t be cleaned properly if you hold the broom only one way and clean vertically.
proper method guarantees a proper cleaning.
3.
Pay attention to blind spots Usually, the right hand side of the teeth in your mouth will be cleaned more carelessly. So gingivitis will occur in a high percentage there. Deliberately open your mouth wider to clean these often ignored parts. Left-handed people should pay extra attention to teeth on the left hand side of the mouth.
4.
Use tooth floss
If not in the morning, do it at night.
So here is my advice. If you have any questions, come to my clinic for help and a checkup. Good habits will help prevent gum disease or other tooth related problems.
duration
时间
Brushing teeth should be for 3 minutes at least. If it’s impossible to do it in the mornings, do it at night. It’s similar to washing clothes; the duration of washing, strength and the

Know Your Olive Oil
W
ith the growing popularity of Mediterranean cuisine, olive oil is making a name for itself in emerging markets as far as Northern Europe, the US, and China. The quality of olive oil is determined by many factors ranging from the growing environment and cultivation of the olive tree to the processing, storage and transportation of the olive oil itself. That explains why the price for just one bottle of olive oil in Europe can cost as much as 50 Euros, while it may just cost you 2 Euros to buy one back home. Now is the perfect time to teach you how to distinguish a good bottle of olive oil and a bad one. 1. First…look at it The Appearance: The colour of good quality olive oil is green tinged with gold and the texture looks thick. Low quality oil or one that is not very pure or has been oxidized will look yellow with a thin texture. The Acidity: The acidity of olive oil is a reflection of the freshness of the olive fruit with the acidity of Extra Virgin olive oil ranging from less than 0.8%, but usually above 0.3%. Refined oil or Pomace oil’s acidity can be artificially adjusted, so if its acidity is below 0.3%, best to just throw it out. 2. Then smell Drip a few drops of olive oil on your palm and then rub your hand until it becomes warm. If it smells like grass, flower, fruit, tomato or mushroom, it indicates good quality, while a low quality oil will smell like gasoline, earth or metal. 3. Lastly, taste it Sip some olive oil, and if it tastes like nuts with an aftertaste of light spiciness also with a slight bitterness then it is good quality. In contrast if it stinks, the oil is of poor quality. In addition to this, the best way to test the quality of olive oil for the amateurs is to eat some plain or salty bread dipped in oil. From this simple test you’ll be able to tell the moment you take a bite,

FOOD & NUTRITION
FOOD & NUTRITION of the apartments in Qingdao also feature sunrooms that could easily be repurposed as greenhouses for year round growing. There are numerous ways to grow different kinds of plants, but it all begins with seeds. You can usually find them being sold at street vendors or at vegetable markets. If not, you can try flower shops, and supermarkets. If all else fails, you can look on Taobao. Once you have your seeds, you'll need some containers and soil. For small plants and seedlings you can always cut the top portion off of a water bottle and fill it with soil or gravel. If you don't want to get soil from the local environment, you can see about getting potting soil from the flower shop.

Urban Farming Living in a city means that access to fresh, healthy produce can be either hard to find or hard on your budget. Also, many people do not always think about the hidden costs of the food that they buy in stores and markets. Noah Luogameno shows how growing your own food or Urban Farming can avoid all this.
M
any of the products on store shelves have been transported over great distances to reach the customers that buy them. And so one of the biggest hidden costs for this system is the cost on the environment. Our food logistic systems run on oil. From the machines that farmers use to grow the food, to the trucks that transport it all over the country, oil is used in great quantities. And in many parts of the world, food is grown in warmer climates, which although allows for a longer growing season means that produce in northern cities may have to be transported long distances to those regions with a shorter growing season.
32
Most of the world’s population inhabits large cities within 200 km of the coast including Beijing, Shanghai, New York City, Los Angeles, Paris and London. However, the large food production areas of most countries tend to be further inland, far from these populated centers. In order to get a large amount of food to the cities it must often be transported hundreds or even thousands of kilometers. So what can we do? How can we hope to make a difference in this well-established global food system? It is actually quite simple. All you need are seeds, soil, and water. The idea of Urban Farming has been growing steadily over the last decade
driven by the need to produce food near the large population centers, as well as the importance of limiting global greenhouse emissions. People who are conscious of these problems, as well as those looking to save money and have more control over the food they put in their bodies, have begun to grow their own fruits and vegetables in small urban gardens or farms. It does not take much space, time, or effort to grow your own food. Empty plastic bottles, coolers, or buckets are a great way to start. Just add soil, seeds, and water. If you want a more advanced system, you can even decide to forgo the soil and just use water in a hydroponic system. Many
To plant the seeds, just poke a hole about 3 or 4 cm into the soil and drop in a few seeds. Cover with soil and add a small amount of water to moisten it. Keep the soil moist for a few days and you will eventually see the telltale signs of green life erupting from the soil. As long as you keep the soil moist to touch, the plants should continue to grow and bear delicious fruits and vegetables. Other great containers can be found at local shops, and around your house. Buckets and coolers work great for larger plants such as tomatoes. As for location, sunrooms and window ledges are ideal. If you have access to your building's rooftop, you can grow large amounts of local fruit and vegetable up there. If every building had a green roof, the air would be cleaner, the food would be more abundant, and there would be less polluted runoff from the rain, washing into the sea. Start small with just one or two plants and you might even find out that you have a green thumb.

PARENTING
Raising a Bilingual Child in China
It passed, though. The language, it turned out, was barely even part of the problem. Being away from mommy and daddy for the first time is a greater challenge for a toddler than any culture shock. They get used to it, though, and they get used to the language, too. And once your child does, you’ll see a level of confidence and independence you never expected. 3: Your Child Will Confuse the Languages Until they are about five, Children can’t understand that they are bilingual. All they can do is take the labels they learn and apply them as far as they can. As far as your child will understand, some things will have English names and some things will have Chinese names. I saw this the year before in my brother’s children, who went to daycare in Canada. When they wanted to play a game they learned at school, they explained it to us in another language and then got frustrated when we didn’t understand them. Getting your child to talk at all can prove such a difficult task that, once they get out any word at all, you’ll see this confusion as the huge victory it is.
R
aising a child anywhere is hard, and it’s even harder when you’re on the other side of the world you know. Nothing is predictable in the life of an expat child growing up abroad, but if you’re planning on teaching your child Chinese, there are a few things you can count on. 1: Your Child Wants to Learn Even if you don’t teach your child Chinese, there’s no hiding the fact that the people outside are speaking a different language. When my stepson Silas came to China on his second birthday, our plan was to keep practicing English a while longer before adding Chinese. It didn’t work. Where he’d been an outgoing, sociable boy in America, we couldn’t get as much as a “hi” out
34
of him in China. He knew that, for some reason, the people here made gibberish noises instead of using words, and he wasn’t going to waste his breath until he figured out why. It was frustrating for us, but we didn’t realize how frustrating it was for him until we found him in his room, playing with a toy that teaches how to count in ten different languages. He was mashing the “Chinese” button, ignoring the other nine, listening to the sounds he heard outside and repeating them back: “Yi, er, san, si, wu.” Before we’d taught him a word of Chinese, Silas taught himself how to count. Living in a foreign country is as frustrating for your child as it is for you. Kids want to be able to communicate
with the people around them, and we owe them that chance. 2: There Will be Delays Starting Silas in a Chinese daycare was a struggle. After eight hours of not being understood at school, he’d have given up on talking altogether by the time he was home. When he wanted to be hugged, he’d put his hands up and grunt. When he wanted juice, he’d just point at the fridge and cry. It was frustrating. It wasn’t like him. It would take the whole day to get him back to normal, and when the morning came, the whole process would start again. We talked about pulling him out of daycare.
4: It will be Worth It It will feel, some days, like your child isn’t learning. We nearly pulled Silas out of daycare before the day we realized how much he’d already learned. We had come to take him home early; convinced daycare was torture for him. As we got him ready to go, we tried to get him to say “bye-bye” to his classmates, but he just stared at us dumbly. It was right when we opened the door to leave, though, that he turned back to his class and said a word we had never taught him: “Zaijian!” Silas has only been in Chinese daycare for a short while, but he’s picking up words fast. It’s in my brother’s son, though, that I see how bright his future will be. Being raised bilingual has ignited such a passion for language in him that, at five, he has already taken it upon himself to learn how to say “hello” in eight different languages. In an increasingly global world, languages are more important than ever. Your children have an amazing opportunity. Teaching them Chinese will be hard, and you might feel like giving up, but stick with it and they will thank you for it some day.

I
n the fall, parents send their children off to school with excitement over new school supplies and the chance to see their friends. In the rush of getting back into the routine of our expatriate lives our thoughts often turn to school supply lists, new school clothes, and all the possibilities this new school year offers. Invariably, the thought of child safety momentarily flickers across parents’ minds in the midst of this chaos. It is generally taken for granted that the school that parents have diligently researched, visited and chosen as the best fit for their child, provides more than academic, social and physical security. However, in our international environment where predators can hide, child safety should be foremost in the minds of parents and of anyone who works with children.
36
The United Nations, the World Health Organization and many other worldwide agencies have championed the cause that children need to be protected, especially in the areas of neglect, and physical, emotional and sexual abuse. I urge you to also champion their causes by partnering with these and other organizations that believe in the importance of child safety and that develop policies to safeguard children. Numerous government and private organizations also promote the protection of children. Some of these groups provide guidelines and assistance for businesses and schools to help develop appropriate policies for this protection. Generally, these policies must state the procedures the business or schools will use to screen adults who work with children, the standards of behavior that all must
adhere to, and training programs that will be in place to educate adults and children, as well as parents and volunteers in schools. Screening of adults includes police background checks and thorough scrutiny of references prior to employment. Training programs for adults include explanations of the need for standards, characteristics of those who abuse children, characteristics of the behavior of children who have been abused, procedures for reporting abuse, and guidelines for the care of those who have been abused. In most programs, adults who work with children are required to sign a Code of Conduct at the conclusion of their training program. This code delineates standards of behavior for adults as they deal with children.
Requiring that signature affirms commitment to the standards adopted by the business or school. The International Schools of China (ISC), of which the International School of Qingdao (mti) is a member, have embarked upon a rigorous application of child safety standards within all six of its schools. A Foreign and Chinese policy has been adopted and training of all staff has begun in each school. The training materials, annual training, and the Code of Conduct are presented and available in English and Chinese. Translation of the materials into the Korean language is also underway. The child safety training in ISC is not a one-time event but requires updates and continued instruction throughout the year for all those who work with children. Intentionality, effort, and expense are all involved in the process of creating an organization that values child safety, but having children know they are protected and knowing, as a parent, they are protected is priceless.

Picking the Right College or University
A
client recently told me that she was very open to attending the right college for her, except that the school needed to be high ranking, well known in China, and located either in Boston, New York or Los Angeles. So in the end, she really wasn’t that open to selecting the right or best college for her. The America education system has a different system for school selection, as the standard of education is roughly equal throughout the entire country. Schools that are small and not so well known in China, still offer a first-class education for Chinese
38
students. My wife transferred from China to Moravian College, a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, where she switched majors from English to Accounting. A few years after graduation she attended a top ranked accounting masters program. However, she felt that Moravian’s accounting program and professors were better than those at the top ranked program. Being famous does not mean being better, so rankings don’t guarantee a superior quality of education. As a starting point in finding the right college (or university) to apply to, decide on what matters most to
you: Getting a “brand” or getting a great education. You could achieve both by attending Harvard University. However, Harvard only selected 5 Mainland Chinese students to attend in 2014, so this is not an option for the other 100,000 plus Chinese applicants planning to attend US undergraduate programs in 2015. My recommendation is to focus on educational quality rather than the perceived rankings and ability to get a “good” first job after graduation. Many highly ranked US universities take too many Chinese students and have inadvertently created Chinese colleges within these universities.
The former admissions director of Washington University’s top ranked Master in Finance program told me that he prefers Chinese applicants applying from smaller colleges like Washington over those students from large national universities like Ohio State University. The reason is simple: the students who attended schools without huge Chinese populations had stronger English and cultural skills and thus were better prepared for the demands of his graduate programs. This leads to another question whether or not you want be one of many or one of only a few Chinese students in your school.
For most Chinese applicants and their families, their school selection comes down to the US New and World Report rankings. Too many applicants limit their choice exclusively to large national research oriented universities without even investigating regional universities or liberal arts colleges. Too many applicants also limit their choices just to a few cities such as Boston, New York, and Los Angeles. There are so many other locations in the United States for Chinese students to study and develop. Every state has outstanding universities that regionally and locally are well known for their teaching quality and academics. This leads to the next recommendation for you: investigate 6 to 8 schools from both the regional university and liberal arts college categories and apply to those schools you find the most relevant to your interests. There is no rule that says you cannot apply to both large research universities and small liberal arts colleges. A client last year did this and got into schools she had never known about before starting her applications. In the end, she went to a famous regional university and she couldn’t be happier. She gave up much higher ranked schools and even large scholarships to achieve this. As a helpful side note; liberal arts colleges give a higher percentage of scholarships (and bigger scholarships) to Chinese students. While many students apply to universities that are “undeclared”, my recommendation is to spend more time thinking about your future career aspirations before starting the application process and identify majors that will empower you enter that those career paths. Your interests may change in the future, but that shouldn’t stop you now from picking 2 to 3 potential majors. Review the Top 20 universities for each major and investigate 6 to 8 schools that you find interesting. This is a situation

where the detailed college and university rankings listed in the US News and World Report are very helpful. Research and keeping an open mind will greatly increase the odds of you making a good choice. As liberal arts colleges typically do not ask students to declare a major during the first two years, the above recommendation is not as relevant. These schools want students to get a “liberal arts” education by exploring their interests and then deciding what interest them the most. When evaluating liberal arts colleges to find the right one to apply to, talk with current Chinese students who are enrolled there. The schools offer campus ambassadors to share their experiences with you. With a little research, you should be able to find the emails of current Chinese students to contact by looking for the leaders of Chinese clubs on the various campuses. By talking with these current students, you will get helpful “insider” knowledge about the college from a Chinese perspective. It would be great to be able to visit the universities and colleges in person and walk around each campus to make sure the school is the right one for you, but for most Chinese applicants this is not an option. Use the web and email as much as possible to gather and confirm your research. In the end, focusing less on rankings and more on the right fit will help you have an incredible four year college experience that prepares you to be successful in whatever career you decide to follow in the future. Best Success!
US New and World Report的院校排名。
