Chinese bike-share service to hit UK China’s cycle start-up Ofo - pronounced “oh-efoh” - has chosen Cambridge for its entry point into Europe. Going to sleep too late every night. I used to sleep around 10pm, which I think is pretty healthy, but since I went to bed around 12 or even later than 1am for a long time last year, I somehow can't go to sleep early anymore! I think my phone is to be blamed for that. I usually check my WeChat and Weibo while lying in bed.

Partying and clubbing too much? I like the night life and that really makes me feel good and relaxed. I love meeting new people and having fun. However, things develop in the opposite direction once they become too extreme. Being out all night also makes me feel exhausted during the day time and I sometimes feel uncomfortable. Besides, clubbing makes you spend too much money.

Well, as far as I know, smoking is my most unhealthy habit. I started smoking when I was in middle school and since then I can't stop. I tried to quit when I was dating someone, because she didn't like me smoking, but went straight back after I broke up with her. I hope I can quit it this year!

I think my most unhealthy habit might be watching too many Korean TV shows. I just can't help it! Whenever there is a new show, I’ll watch the first episode and afterwards I just have to watch the whole series, which really is a time consuming project. I spent too much time on it which I could have used to hang out with my friends or do something more meaningful.

LIVING VEGAN IN QINGDAO Vegetarianism and veganism are growing movements around the world, but in China, the concepts seem sparsely understood. Meike Sell talks through some of the challenges of veganism here in Qingdao.

n Germany, where I’ve been vegan for 8 years, everyone kept telling me it was going to be easy to eat vegan in China (I know). The first Chinese foods that came to my mind were rice, noodles, tofu, vegetables, and really really spicy food. Vegan eating has got easier and easier the past few years where I live, in a city

Still starving from the long journey and the not very satisfying lunch and dinner the day before, I happily walked down the stairs awaiting a good Chinese breakfast — only without animal products. And what did I find in my bowl? — squid in my noodles.

It took an exasperated call to my intern agency to stop the animal products appearing in my food. Was it a language barrier, or a refusal to understand? Out of curiosity, I started asking on the street what Qingdao’s people think vegans/vegetarians are. In Chinese there is no real distinction between veganism and vegetarianism.

I do not eat milk, cheese, butter, eggs, honey, chicken stock, meat broth, fish stock, fish sauce or lard. 我不吃牛奶，奶酪，黄油，鸡蛋，蜂蜜，鸡汤，肉汤，鱼汤，鱼浆，猪油。 wǒ bú chī niú nǎi, nǎi lào, huáng yóu, jī dàn, fēng mì, jī tāng, ròu tāng, yú tāng, yú jiāng, zhū yóu.

Some beers are brewed using animal products! Fortunately, Tsingtao Beer is VEGAN FRIENDLY

素食主义 sushizhuyi means “vegetablefood-ism”, but the perception of that word varies. Older Qingdaoren explained to me that although “vegetarians” did not eat meat, they still ate fish and shrimp and drank milk; younger people seemed a little bit more informed. 21-year-old June told me vegetarians would never eat meat, fish or shrimp. She also knew that some vegetarians do not eat meat out of compassion for animals. Another girl I interviewed was actually a vegetarian, but only because she doesn't like the taste.

The only way to eat truly vegan in China would be to cook everything myself. But then I would miss out on so much of the experience I came here for. When you eat out in China, you have to be a “flexible vegan” and willing to turn a blind eye sometimes, because you never know what the cook uses to prepare your food and what little Mandarin I do have does not help there. Even if I were able to ask how the vinegar he uses is filtered, I think he would probably just laugh at the crazy waiguoren. Being a little flexible with my food choices in Qingdao but still not letting go of all my values has proven a challenge, but it is manageable and even enjoyable. So all you vegans and vegetarians out there, don't fret, you will not starve in China!

QINGDAO UNIVERSITY’S COFFEE STOPS Whether you’re a student in need of a better place to study than the library, or a stressed, hungover laptop-tapper looking to feel at home, near a university campus is the place to be. Virginia Rossi reports on the best coffee stops near Qing Da.

PROFESSIONAL coffee uS (Opposite Qingdao Daxue bus stop, Gaoxiong Lu) Sat proudly just in front of the “Qingdao University” bus stop, this newly opened spot has more than coffee and cake to offer. Saying that Sprofessional Coffee is a café is reductive: it’s in fact a four-storey warehouse with a gobsmacking number of tables and great variety of food and drinks to offer. From the regular coffees, beers and pizza to bottles of European wine, exotic dishes of sashimi, and even escargots. It can be pricey, but if you go here often, seriously consider the member card. You have to pre-load a few hundred yuan, but it gets you practically half price on everything instantly. Staff speak English and the tables are big and well lit for a great workspace. They’re even developing a basement which might host pool parties in future.

u 初见咖啡 First Sight Cafe (10 Qingda Lu) With its exposed brick walls and bookshelves, First Sight Café offers the perfect atmosphere if you’re looking for a quiet place to study. This place looks as though it was specifically designed for students: good wifi, filled with books, good coffee and, most of all, on every table you will find signs that invite costumers to keep quiet. First Sight’s menu offers coffee to teas and milkshakes, from waffles to cheesecake and tiramisu, with individual prices floating around 30 yuan. It’s smaller than SProfessional so you might not find a table at peak times, but if you do, remember to take a good book with you to really enjoy the snug atmosphere.

u 小院咖啡 Xiao Yuan Coffee (Intersection of Ningxia and Gaoxiang Lu, 8595-3536) This place sits just by the West gate, and is painted a cheerful blue. It looks tiny from the outside but inside has three spacious rooms, all nicely furnished. If you’re in good company, play the cool board games; if you’re not, at least the stuffed animals will make you feel less lonely! The prices are average, but Xiao Yuan Café offers something that is missing from its competitors: the chance to sit outside and enjoy the weather. Xiao Yuan’s outside tables will surely come in handy now that the warm season is approaching. Be sure to check it out.

u 雕刻时光咖啡馆 Sculpting in Time Café (18 Xianggang East Lu, 6778-3678)

WINNER

Despite its weird-sounding name, this café (located near Qingdao University’s east gate on Xianggang East Road) has qualified as the best coffee in the neighbourhood. It’s brightened by large windows during the day, and made cozy by perfectly chosen music, many books, and relaxed wooden tables and chairs. The waffles with maple syrup, whipped cream and fruit also played a big part in the win-my-heart-game! Besides waffles, there are many things you can enjoy here: they have sandwiches (38 yuan), pasta (35 – 38 yuan) and pizza (around 52 yuan for the small size and 58 for the big size). Drinks wise, you can choose from different coffee and tea blends whose prices vary between 28 and 35 yuan. This café has an English menu, but not English speaking staff (as friendly as they are), but that means an additional chance to practice your Chinese, right? Furthermore, Sculpting in Time’s quiet atmosphere and its relaxing vintage music are sure to relax you and help you focus. After a few sips of homemade tea, my masseuse, LiLi, led me to one of six impeccably clean rooms, which had a couch, a massage table, and a private bathroom with a shower. The massage itself was lovely – an hour long, with a light oil that did not feel greasy at all. The headrest was adjustable and the

lighting and piano music were nothing short of perfect. LiLi perfectly tailored the massage to the points I had raised, focusing on my tight shoulders and lower back. The service at the Hyatt Spa leaves you wanting for nothing. The huge stone-floored shower was the cherry on top of a deliciously relaxing and totally stress-free experience. It’s pricey, but you get what you pay for. The

GET A MANICURE Nicole Nail and Beauty Located in the back part of a bar and café on Minjiang Er Lu, Nicole’s provides great service for nails, waxing and eyelashes, if a little on the pricier side. Choose your colour and watch T.V. while enjoying a manicure or pedicure. The space is small, but cozy, and the staff are kind. Perhaps my only complaint is that my manicure was solely focused on my nails – in the U.S. or England it usually includes some kind of hand massage or moisturising, which I sorely needed in this dry weather! EXPERIENCE A TRULY BOUTIQUE FACIAL

I would recommend Hui’s treatments especially to those who aren’t particularly willing to spend half a month’s pay on a beauty treatment, but want quality beauty brands and a skilled therapist.

HUI’s Beauty It might not be a sophisticated atmosphere at Hui’s place, but as soon as she starts working on your skin you will barely notice the difference between her and a beauty therapist with years of experience. She is just a student working from her apartment in Qingdao, but this impresses rather than discourages me: she has clearly invested in her huge range of beauty products, and has transformed a room of her apartment into a treatment room. She already counts many happy and loyal customers.

Hui’s place is located in Fuzhou Nan Lu, few meters from the bus stop 福州南路 . Hui's small place is always busy so don’t forget to make an appointment! (Chinese required.) Cleansing facial - 180 yuan.

TAIDONG Night Market has multiple hole-in-the-wall manicure places where you can compare prices and relax after shopping. QINGDAO UNIVERSITY has a beauty store with a cheap and cheerful nail service. The surroundings are modest to say the least but you can get a good colour, well done for 30 yuan. Go in the West Gate and ask a passerby for directions, or follow the paths up to your right.

I chose a facial cleaning treatment followed by a Chinese-style facial massage. To make me see the difference the beauty treatment made, Hui does one side at a time; I was surprised to see a real difference. GET A TONING MASSAGE WITH UNBELIEVABLE RESULTS Shangri-La’s VENUS Swan Experience Who hasn’t wondered whether those instruments that claim to be able to reshape your body in minutes can really do anything? Is it possible? My initial thoughts… “no way”. Nevertheless, I followed Shangri-La’s Spa Director with curiosity. “You won’t believe your eyes,” was the phrase she used. I took a shower and then drank herbal tea while my feet were massaged to loosen up the nerves there and maximise the relaxation effect of the treatment. The main treatment, the Venus Swan, looked hi-tech and somewhat out of place in the soft surroundings of the spa. It uses radiofrequency technology, and is totally pain-free (and actually very pleasant) to use almost everywhere on your body and face. I fell asleep during my facial treatment. The rotating applicators give a heating sensation for relaxation, while an energy matrix penetrates layers of skin. The measuring tape showed that I lost 7 centimetres from my belly, and looking in the mirror, my face genuinely looked much more toned. I couldn’t believe it. The manager explained that the best way to do the treatment is once a week,

GET A TRIM ZhuoYue LingXiu Getting your first haircut in China can be a nerve-racking experience, but not at ZhuoYue LingXiu. Located on Dong Hai Dong Lu in a swanky compound, my stylist Jacky was well worth the price (~160) as he managed my fine, western hair without a hitch. When he blow-dried my hair, I was happy to note that he did not use any products – no styling gel or hairspray. The whole experience took about an hour (including washing). OTHER TIPS: TONI&GUY Hairdressing Qingdao’s branch of Toni & Guy is fully equipped and immaculately clean, though staff don’t speak English. Head here to spoil yourself for a massaging wash and cut. ou know back in January when you made that New Year’s Resolution to eat healthier and go to the gym more? Be honest… how many of you have already given up and fallen into your old habits? Summer is approaching, and with it a stream of terrifying ‘get that bikini body!’ adverts. Before you panic and frantically Google ‘how to lose fifteen pounds in a week’, STOP! and finish reading this article. When it comes to dieting, it’s very easy to waste precious time, become overwhelmed,

or get lost in a sea of falsified information. You’ve probably heard of the Grapefruit Diet, Master Cleanse, Cabbage Soup Diet, Juice Fasting, Weight Watchers, Atkins Diet, Salt Water Flush, South Beach Diet, Apple Cider Vinegar Cleanse, Hollywood Diet…the list goes on and on. All you need to know is that attempting one of these diets is like using scotch tape to fix a leak: it can work temporarily, but eventually, it’s almost certain to fail and you will have to look for yet another solution. I want to offer some realistic advice when it comes to dieting.

1 START SMALL

If you are deciding to make a change for the better, make it one that fits into your everyday lifestyle. Don’t set yourself up for failure by choosing a goal that is difficult to maintain naturally. For example, instead of changing your entire daily routine, pick one or two things that would make a significant difference (i.e. replace soda with herbal tea, or take a short walk every night after dinner). As those tasks become easier, you can add another small modification so it does not seem like you are depriving or over-stretching yourself. Some say it takes 21 days to change a habit; some say more. So give yourself time to adjust. The key is sticking with the change, however small. With a little commitment, you will climb the victory ladder one step at a time.

2 DON'T SKIP MEALS

If you choose to “starve yourself skinny,” you are doing extreme harm to your body, not to mention your mind. When you skip meals, your body goes into starvation mode and clings onto your fat stores as a means of protection, lowering your metabolic rate and slowing down the speed of weight loss. You may also find that you begin to acquire intense cravings, and when you finally decide to give in, you eat everything in sight, bingeing on junk food. This is the most vicious cycle of dieting and one of the biggest reasons why crash dieting is terribly ineffective and damaging, and results in higher weight gain than when you began in the first place! Your body is an intelligent and magnificent machine, but you have to look after it for it to work at optimal level.

3 CALORIES IN, CALORIES OUT

Calories (n): tiny little creatures that live in your closet and sew your clothes a little tighter each night. Although this is not the scientific definition of a calorie, for most of us, it might as well be true. When thinking of calories, I want you to picture a balancing scale. On one side is your daily food consumption and on the other is your daily activity including small tasks such as cleaning the house, walking to lunch, taking the stairs, etc. When trying to lose weight, think of food in terms of energy. If you're highly active, don’t be too harsh on your meals; if you sit down for most of the day, think more carefully about quantities. No matter what, it’s essential to include at least

30 minutes of dedicated exercise which can be dispersed throughout the day whenever you have time. And aim to build muscle: muscle has a higher metabolic consumption rate than other body tissues, meaning if you’re muscly, you burn more calories even sleeping or sitting on the couch.

4 SNACK SMART

Why is it recommended to eat five to six smaller meals throughout the day rather than three traditional large meals? First, you never want to be so hungry that your eyes become bigger than your stomach. Secondly, you never want to be so full that you become lazy, sleepy, and eventually crash in the middle of the day. Put simply: eat breakfast within the first hour of waking up, small meals every three hours, and stop at least two hours

before bed. This way, your metabolism will continue to burn calories, you can feel satisfied throughout the day, and you can avoid oversized portions due to being really hungry. Some of my favourite healthy snacks are an apple and peanut butter, yogurt with strawberries and home-made granola, edamame, blueberry protein smoothies, vegetable slices and hummus, pineapple and cottage cheese, unsweetened dried mangoes, and avocado toast. Whatever you do, try to refrain from the endless bag of potato chips, buttered popcorn, french fries, cookies, pastries, and sugary drinks filled with pointless calories.

5 TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK!

If you’re having a hard time staying motivated, find a friend with similar goals and keep each other accountable! A little friendly competition might be the extra push you need to stay away from those tempting morning doughnuts and opt for an outdoor hike instead. A little fresh air and beautiful scenery is good for the soul. It’s also fun to take pictures of your journey and document your progress. You can look back at how far you have come, and hey, your healthy lifestyle choices might just inspire others to do the same.

During the different dynasties in China, kites have served different practical uses. Most importantly they were used for messaging, and in the Han Dynasty kites were even used on the battlefield. The invention of kites has been claimed by two Chinese philosophers, Mo Di and Gongshu Ban. Supposedly they flew their first kite in approximately 500 BCE, but the first official record of people flying paper kites is in 549 CE, when they were made from paper and used to send a message during a rescue mission. Nowadays kites have lost most of their practical purposes, becoming instead a form of entertainment and art. With all shapes and sizes, from fighter to recreational kites, the possibilities are endless. We want you to explore some of these possibilities with us! SNORKELLING IN A DIVERS’ PARADISE

“C’mon Lily, you’ll love it!”, she said with an excited and inciting tone, and he nodded after her. I’d met the couple only recently, yet they were cheering me to join in their exploits like a group of old buddies would. Over the fourteen days I spent in Puerto Galera, West Mindoro, Philippines, this scenario where I was drawn out of my seclusion and into some sort of adventure by my hostel neighbours became a recurrent one. Why Puerto Galera? Well, I wanted something that did not require too much travel. Puerto Galera is only a short (2-3 hour) bus and 45 minute ferry ride from Manila. Because of its proximity and lower profile, PG is also cheaper than more high profile places like Cebu, Boracay, or Palawan. Still, this “Divers’ Paradise” has a lot to offer to those looking for exciting underwater adventures, chill days at the beach, or wild nights on the town. On my very first night, I went to the hostel bar for a quick drink and some fresh air and met a couple from Leicester (UK). Immediately, they tried to get me to join their diving experience. Unfortunately, my propensity to asthma attacks kept me from diving, but under their insistence joined the diving excursion as a snorkeller. The excursion went on the boat to Sabang port. Upon first sight Sabang just looks like a port with a lot of restaurants around it. If you take a closer look though, you will notice lush hills surrounding a white sand

The water is sky blue and so clear you can look down from your boat and see an array of fish, starfish, and sea flora that will make you want to jump in the water to look closer. Like with most firsts, I struggled through it at the beginning, clung to the boat’s rope most of the time, and had to be taken back to the boat after only 20 minutes in the water. When the divers emerged, raving about the giant sea turtle they saw, my sense of defeat grew, but I wasn’t about to give up. The next day I joined two travellers going to Monkey Beach, a snorkelling hotspot, to give it a second go. By the end of my trip snorkelling had become so habitual, sometimes I just did it in the spur of the moment. The last time, I was sitting at the Bikini Bar (a floating bar in Sabang shore), looking down at the schools of fish swimming below us. Some of the guys I was with announced they were going for a swim and I jumped in, too. So my snorkelling adventures ended in the same place they had started, with an amazing sight that I would have missed were it not for the encouragement of fellow travellers. My only regret is not snorkelling in Tamaray falls, which I heard is an experience all its own. Next time, for sure!

JOURNEY TO THE VOLCANO At five in the morning, everywhere was still dark. The only lights that could be seen were the yellowish glow of the headlamp and the red brake lights of other vehicles that passed us. The burning smell of crude oil and the buzzing of the ancient engine marked the beginning of our motorised tricycle ride towards Mount Pinatubo, a volcano about 90km from the capital city of Manila in the Philippines. Mount Pinatubo last erupted twentysix years ago in 1991, spewing ash and magma all over the area, killing hundreds and devastating local agriculture. In the years afterwards, nature reclaimed much of the space, and the site of the eruption is now a caldera, filled with stunning blue-green water. After hiring guides and a 4x4, my buddy and I were off on yet another motorised ride taking us from Capas to the base of the volcano. While the ride itself was bumpy and harsh, the rising sun and beauty of the landscape took my breath away.

When we arrived at the base camp, we encountered others wanting to reach the crater. All of us were eager to see the lake we’d heard so much about, and excited for the hike. Greeted by fresh natural air and lush plants, we skipped across rocky creeks, swung around various trees, and ducked under lowhanging branches until we finally ascended the last steps to the peak. It. Was. Breathtaking. The scene itself was like something out of a painting, with the sparkling waters of the lake encased within the flourishing mountainous walls of the crater. Clouds hugged the tips of the mountain and wind blew through the valley, making it seem as if each blade of grass was waving in unison. I sat for at least half an hour just watching the colour palate and motions of the scene. It's hard to believe that only a quarter of a century before, this was the sight of devastation. The trek back to base camp was reflective. Beyond ornate Jeepneys and the savoury Sisig, patriotic museums and kind people, of the few days that I had spent in the Philippines, the journey to Mount Pinatubo will continue to be my fondest memory.

Beginners’ Oil Painting Workshops at The Art Museum of The Qingdao Oil Painting Institute The Qingdao Oil Painting Institute, located in Huang Pu Jiang Lu in Huangdao district, was founded in 1981 and is the earliest professional oil painting institution in China. Since its establishment, it’s been place for gatherings, exhibitions and conferences for Qingdao and the surrounding area’s artistic community, holding professional exhibitions and organising events such as painting from nature and seminars about arts. Since autumn 2016, it has also hosted weekend painting workshops for art lovers, aiming to provide a dynamic and enjoyable environment for attendees to experience traditional ink painting, calligraphy and oil painting. Most attendees are able to create their own oil painting, expressing their own ideas and visions, after only 3 months.

Starting April 2017, one Saturday a month the Institute hosts a handicraft class, making collages or clay figures in the studio. On Saturday, 29 April, members of the public can watch two professional artists, one Chinese and one Western, paint a model coming especially from Beijing. There are a limited number of seats so call ahead (187-5328-2338) to reserve a seat. The exhibition hall can be a great place to meet the local community of artists and art lovers.

BILLINGTON’S THE BAR: A STEP UP FOR QINGDAO’S BAR SCENE REDSTAR’s Editor reports on Qingdao’s slick new establishment.

alk into J&D Hotel and head for the basement steps in front of you, and you’ll enter billington’s the bar. It’s lowly lit, with chilled house, rolling blues and rock music floating in the air at just the right volume. An intimate stage at the back of the room suggests gigs and events; seating is spread in pockets of cosy armchairs and low-lying tables begging for a G&T or two to be placed on them. Each small area of seating is a rentable space, with which you get your own TV — for a very reasonable minimum spend. Groups could easily stay here for hours. It’s a design bar, for designers, and the careful consideration that has gone into every aspect of creating a perfect watering-hole really shows. billington’s, as owner (and, as it happens, designer) Roger Billington explains, is trying to do something different. “There’s something missing in Qingdao’s nightlife,”

he says. “There are places to party, but nowhere to enjoy your drink, to have a relaxed and effortless evening with friends. We’ve tried to create somewhere we would like to go to. With good bathrooms, not full of smoke, quality music, food when you want it, and alcohol that will never, never be fake.” There’s also an exquisite sound system, which shows the bar’s dedication to and celebration of music. Unlike noisier staples of Qingdao nightlife, billington’s focuses less on volume, and more on good taste. “There’s really not many places in Qingdao that do good music!” Roger, a professional musician in his youth, laments; this bar aims to combat the void with dedicated genre nights of latin, rock, blues and chilled house. An impressive collection of single malt whiskies floats above the bar, itself a dark

wood feature topped with cascading wax candles and illuminated by the space’s gentle violet black-lights. billington’s have an extensive menu of spirits (including REDSTAR favourite, Rhum Barbancourt), cocktails and carefully chosen wines. Tsingtao beer is on draft, with more international brands in the pipeline. On weeknights it’s a perfect place for after-work drinks or business functions; on weekends, come here after ten for more of a party vibe. “Qingdao is on the edge of the next generation of bars, nicer places that really know their music and their drinks.” billington’s is a front runner indeed.

The district now has a direct link to Qingdao's old town - the Jiaozhouwan tunnel has cut journey times to around 20 minutes and more or less put the old ferry terminal out of business. Jiaonan, to the north, is linked to the eastern municipality by the longest bridge in the world (41.58km, completed in June 2011).
