Why Snapchat's owner is hiring in China

Can fresh air be a hot commodity?

Snap Inc. says it has opened a technology office in the southern city of Shenzhen to focus on Spectacles, the startup's cameraequipped sunglasses that can send footage to users' Snapchat accounts. Famous for its disappearing messages, Snapchat is blocked in China, like many other Western social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter. Despite these blocks, Chinese companies seeking to advertise or expand overseas are still seen as a source of potential revenues for U.S. players.

Vendors in Southwest China's Yunnan Province are putting fresh air into sealed plastic bags and selling it online for 18.8 yuan ($2.70) per bag, reported a local news portal. Sales volumes were relatively low, but the move sparked heated public debate. Sun Wenjie, a lawyer, said that according to China's legal provisions, air is not a type of merchandise, so such business is suspected of being unlicensed and it would be difficult to complain if anyone finds himself fooled.

Snow sculptures and ice lanterns heat up Harbin

Only about 7,100 cheetahs remain in the world and their numbers are quickly dwindling, putting them at risk of extinction, according to new research that claims cheetahs should be re-categorized as "endangered" instead of their current status as "vulnerable" on the list of threatened species. Cheetahs have lost 91% of their historic habitat, which once encompassed areas throughout Africa and southwest Asia. Cheetahs have all but disappeared in Asia, with fewer than 50 remaining in Iran, according to research published in the journal.

Snow sculptures are now on display at the 29th China Harbin Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo. Harbin, capital of Northeast China’s Heilongjiang province, became a world of snow sculptures and ice lanterns as two events opened on the same day: the 29th Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo kicked off at the picturesque Sun Island, as did the 43rd China Harbin Ice Lantern Garden Party in Zhaolin Park, drawing a large number of visitors. The snow sculptures are world famous and will remiain for much of winter.

The 18th colour of the year has been named by the world renowned Pantone Color Institute: greenery. On the company's website, Pantone Color Institute CEO Leatrice Eiseman described greenery as a "fresh and zesty yellowgreen shade that evokes the first days of spring". Greenery has already gained world-wide popularity, from use in urban planning and architecture to clothing and daily necessities. Pantone has chosen a colour of the year since 2000; the extra number comes from 2016, when two colours were chosen.

The International Management Group (IMG) announced that the Color Run, "The Happiest 5K on the Planet," will return to China in 2017 with a brand new theme: 'Dream World Tour. ' The inaugural event of the Dream World Tour in China will take place in Hangzhou at Xianghu National Tourism Resort on May 6. The Colour Run does not involve winners or rankings, with runners instead encouraged to enjoy the sport and the happiness invoked by running with colours. IMG strictly regulates materials used in the events to ensure the safety and health of participants. More than 500 Colour Run events have been held, involving over 4 million runners.

THE LUCKY ROOSTER: THE STORY BEHIND REDSTAR’S FEBRUARY COVER DESIGN Berlin Li, designer of this issue’s cover, put a lot of thought into the design. The four characters at the top come from “ 吉星高照 ”, jí xīng gāo zhào, a traditional Chinese phrase meaning “to be blessed by a lucky star”, in the spirit of the Lunar New Year. Berlin has changed the “ 吉 ” to “ 雞 (simplified: 鸡）” jĪ, which means the cockerel/rooster, this year’s Zodiac. The final product, “ 雞星高照 ”, means “the Rooster star blesses you”. The xīng character also links to us, meaning ‘star’ as in 红星 of REDSTAR; and also added is a Burns “Marquee” guitar, a nod to our musical events and a modernisation of the traditional drawing.

The Rooster is drawn using the traditional style of Chinese door-god illustrations. Door gods are a beautiful and widely popular part of Chinese New Year culture, with the custom of pasting images to your door dating back hundreds and hundreds of years. Colourful designs of deified military leaders are meant to ward off evil spirits, while images of civil leaders draw in benevolent spirits. Pairs such as Shentu and Yulü (early gods), Ying Bu and Peng Yue (generals) and Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi (nemeses during the Three Kingdoms wars), are often placed on traditional courtyard house double doors, facing one another for good luck. MASTERS OF THE FORBIDDEN CITY 我在故宫修文物 Vika Pesenti discusses the documentary taking China by storm.

Since it release in late 2016, this wildly successful documentary has captivated millions with what is has revealed about the reality behind the wall of the Forbidden City. Despite its deceptively historical name (which translates literally as “I fix historical artefacts in the Forbidden City”), people of all ages have been drawn in by the show. It relates the lives of humble people working hard to save and preserve various Qing dynasty artefacts. The producer speculates that the reason for its success, which has been particularly notable online, is that it “touches people’s hearts”; showing the faces, opinions and

motivations of the restorers reveals a world that is absorbed in the past, quite different perhaps to the present-day China that rockets towards the future and economic growth and development. Masters of the Forbidden City (named Masters In Forbidden City, officially) gives Chinese people proof of the different kind of lives that people lead; reassurance, perhaps, that the past does exist in the present day, just slightly hidden, and painstakingly taken care of. When asked why there was such a strong public reaction to the show, the producer replied that they were actually initially surprised with the viewer

ratings, but “it’s probably due to nostalgia for a society of the past, that was more concerned with human simplicity and more attached to old manners, morals and principles.” Masters of the Forbidden City may just be that most special of documentaries, that conveys true passion and curiosity without trying to lecture. The show enables us to see remnants of a society past, and the human face of those who try to preserve it. Like the photograph of a girl riding a bike in the Forbidden City (a famous habit of the last boy-emperor, Pu Yi) this documentary connects the past with the present, through the powerful stories of objects.

MA LAN AND THE COMPLEX PATH OF CHINESE CULTURE

Ma Lan is a gentle and amiable calligrapher whose works always deliver a sense of peace. Her distinctive style has gained her a high reputation among calligraphers and critics alike, and she is regarded as one of the best female calligraphers in contemporary China. Suki Li talks to Ms Ma about her art and life.

orn in the year 1966, when the Cultural Revolution was launched, Ma Lan's life was doomed to an inevitable link with modern Chinese history. Growing up in a literary family, Ma’s mother secretly schooled her in traditional Chinese literature and calligraphy from a very young age.

Her family moved to Inner Mongolia from Sichuan in the early 1960s, which ironically gave her more space to explore Chinese culture, as it was further away from the “cultural battlefield" of the time. It was not enough to protect her from tragedy, however: she lost her older brother during those tumultuous years. Her older sister also died in 1988 at the age of 26, when Ma Lan herself was only 22. Life appeared to her very fragile. She was full of doubts and hesitations, and often rode her bike to the Yellow River alone to think about life. In 1989, there was an art movement in China known as the "85 New Tide", promoting the Western arts and critical of traditional Chinese arts and values. Like many of her age at the time, Ma read a lot of work by Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and Kant, but what she found in them was her own skepticism. “I asked myself, 'Why

should we abandon our own culture?'”. In 1990, she left her city of Wuhai in search of a bigger world. She was admitted to the Zhejiang Academy of Art (now the China Academy of Art) in Hangzhou and studied there for a year and a half. After graduating, she became a secondary school teacher back in Inner Mongolia, but she felt lost back home, and, inspired by a backpacker boyfriend, left once more. She went to Qingdao and Zhuhai in search of the ocean, and has now lived in Qingdao on and off for 20 years. A few months ago, she eventually decided to settle down here with the partner she has found. Ma has complicated feelings for the city. "Local culture isn't preserved well in Qingdao. It is seemingly an international city, in terms of people's lifestyles and aesthetic conceptions, unlike Beijing, where lots of traditional treasures are still living in folk life; people in Qingdao tend

to forget about them. For one thing, the interior designs in Qingdao are always of European style. People hardly know anything about the characteristics of Ming dynasty furniture. People follow western fashions; wearing something with traditional Chinese elements would put you in the minority. Some call this 'colonial culture'. In education, parents put a lot of effort and resources on boosting children's English ability, so they can send them abroad. Few would consider sending their children to traditional Chinese music and art classes to gain a peaceful state of mind, or putting them through Kungfu classes for physical strength. Chinese culture is suppressed here. So do people really have an international perspective? Are people in pursuit of independence, freedom, self-reliance, democracy? You see lots of people in their 30s who are still living and depending on their parents. What's the point of being 'international' so superficially without actually changing the way of thinking and behaving? It’s an urban sickness, all external illusions." Ma used to work for the Culture Department of Hisense when she first settled in Qingdao

in 1996. To many, it was a secure job with generous remuneration, but Ma decided to quit two years later. "I was working and living like a robot everyday and I felt scared. I didn't want to follow the prescribed order. That night when I finished work late and got home, I turned on the radio to listen to Beethoven with a bottle of Tsingtao beer in my hand. And suddenly the call for freedom came up in my mind and I decided to quit. I knew it was going to be tough and I would have to struggle with rent again. But it doesn't matter. Everything is difficult at the start. It is the price of freedom. I am content as long as I am walking on my own way." After leaving Hisense in 1998, Ma spent all her time on Chinese calligraphy. After years of persistence, her works are now highly praised by calligraphers, professors and critics. One of her early students, who started learning with her at a young age, has just gained a PhD in Japan. At the age of 50, the year that one is supposed to know the Mandate of Heaven according to Confucius, Ma finally finds life is getting easier. "The wind was blowing northward and I was flying south. I knew this was a difficult journey as there was nothing for me to 'leverage'. There were no other forces that I could borrow. It was like the tip of your writing brush going inversely – it was hard and dangerous but provided the opportunity for something extraordinary." "I have always been trying to look for the root of Chinese culture. For the past 10 years, traditional Chinese study has been trendy. But if the education and academic systems fail to reform, the drawbacks are going to radiate through all of society. Ever since the May Fourth Movement in 1919, the concepts of science and democracy have entered China. Almost 100 years have passed, and I think China's science and technology have caught up with the times, but culturally we are still way behind." For foreigners who are interested in learning Chinese culture and arts, Ma has some tips. "Chinese culture is a mental culture, it is always about the inner world. Chinese put self-cultivation ahead of anything else. In Chinese paintings, you always see the plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, lotus and pine tree. They all have some

personification, and the strokes are usually very brief. If the structure is shown in detail, it is photography; only if the spirit is extracted can you smell the fragrance. Just like the sculptures from the Han dynasty, though they have already been weathered so severely that you can barely see the outline, the strength of the character remains. Listen to the overture." Ma also suggests learning Chinese culture in daily life. "Learn the culture in a lively and funny way. Firewood, rice, oil and salt; poems and songs; culture is all around you. Don't learn it scrupulously and methodically. We always say true arts are too wonderful for words. Culture needs to be felt, not taught." Ma's work is perhaps not easy to appreciate at first sight, as it is not a delicate style. But when you get closer, you will see a brave lady going into history and walking out with a child's simplicity and innocence. It matches the core value of Chinese aesthetics: that great art conceals itself. After talking to Ms Ma, I look at her work with new eyes. I see her pain and struggle within her strokes. It isn't just calligraphy anymore; I see strength, courage and persistence.

MO YAN: WHO IS CHINA’S ONLY NOBEL LITERATURE LAUREATE?

Paul McMahon recounts his travels to the writers hometown (and literary muse), Gaomi.

here is a small city about 40 minutes by train from Qingdao, called Gaomi. It’s nothing spectacular; in fact the word nondescript would be a compliment. It doesn’t have the beautiful coastline of Yantai, the stunning mountains of Qingdao or the cultural importance of Qufu. So what on earth was I doing here for my first weekend away in months? Well, in 2012, the 54-year-old Guan Moye, who was born on the outskirts of this indistinctive corner of the world, achieved something no one in China ever had until then; he was the country’s first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, and I wanted to know more about the man. Born in 1955 into a life of farming, Guan Moye, better known by his nom de plume Mo Yan, received minimal education before going to work as a cattle herder. He grew up amidst the upheaval of the Cultural Revolution, in a family labelled anti-communist. This is what led to him adopting the name Mo Yan in later life: it translates as ‘keep quiet’, something his parents had to drill into him during that decade of disruption. After the Cultural Revolution, he joined the Army and it is here that his talent for writing was spotted.

The first stop on my Mo Yan tour was the house where he was born. Though not the poorest farm home I have ever seen, it is far from luxury. The drive is about 30 minutes from the only hotel in Gaomi allowed to host foreigners. There was a smattering of Chinese tourists at the house and we all knew that we were among the well-read. I wished my Chinese was good enough to tell them that my small country of 5 million has produced four Nobel Literature winners (and that’s without counting Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde or James Joyce). Before he was published, Mo Yan made a living translating works by esteemed names like William Faulkner and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Then, in 1986, his first and most celebrated novel Red Sorghum made it to print. This tells the story of the generations of a family from Shandong and spans the major events of the 20th century, from the Japanese invasion to the Great Leap Forward and through to the conclusion

A year after publication, the novel was made into a highly successful movie of the same name directed by Yimou Zhang, who would go on to international acclaim for his work on the opening ceremony of Beijing 2008. Such is the popularity of the story that in 2014 it was made for television. The set is about a mile from his childhood home and open to visitors (which is quite fortunate because there really wasn’t anything else for me to do that morning). My listless driver, also having a slow say, offered to hang around and wait for me while I strolled through the set. The first area of the tour is the home of the bandits in the story, and they have built a whole network of tunnels and hideaways with real horses and plastic guards. After this I got back in the car for all of 400 yards, where the driver points out that the fields in the area are full of the eponymous red sorghum (it’s a crop). Part two is the sprawling house set for the family whom the story revolves around. After wandering through a pleasant studio for a show I have never seen, I was mildly amused to discover a small adventure park. I decided I am now much too old for that sort of thing and… wow look… swings and… oh well… go on then. I spent an hour climbing ropes,

running through tunnels and balancing on beams before we drove back to Gaomi. Mo Yan is the name to utter in town if you want to get a reaction, as the people here are very proud of their most famous son. The Nobel Committee described his work as hallucinatory realism which ‘merges folk tales, history, and the contemporary’. However, at the time of his great achievement, not all his fellow Chinese were willing to trumpet him. Wang Xiaohong, a Chinese satirist, quipped: “Two years ago, they gave a prize to a Chinese (Liu Xiaobo, Nobel Peace Prize), and in doing so offended the Chinese government. Today they gave another prize to a Chinese, and in doing so offended the Chinese people. My goodness. The whole of China offended in only two years.” A few felt that Haruki Murakami and William Trevor, the two other favourites for the prize that year should have won. However, Eric Abrahamsen, a Chinese-English literary translator said: “[Mo Yan] has done the best job of tackling the big social and historical issues, I think more successfully than anyone else has, taking historical facts and turning them into convincing art. That's enough, right there, to win the Nobel.” This is a view

echoed by the Nobel Academy’s secretary, Peter Englund. The criticism does seem a touch harsh, as Mo Yan has been on the targeted end of the government’s ire. His 1995 novel, Big Breasts and Wide Hips, was roundly criticised for both sexual content and not following propaganda guidelines the Party then had in place. He had to write a self-criticism and for years the book was withdrawn from publication. I returned to Gaomi and spent a few hours looking at nothing in particular, enjoying the calm that isn’t Qingdao. Never underestimate what pleasure can be found in watching motorists obey traffic lights, or counting an almost entire two minutes between car horns on the busiest road in a city. Since 2012 Mo Yan has taken a hiatus from writing, and now is more likely to be spotted at cultural events than his writing desk. Beijing has placed his Nobel Prize on a mantelpiece alongside the Olympics as one of the ever-increasing symbols of China’s push for global recognition and respect. Over 200 years ago, Napoleon predicted: “China is a sleeping giant. Let her sleep, for when she wakes she will move the world.” Mo Yan and his corner of the world in Gaomi form a thought provoking piece in the puzzle of China’s changing face.

The sad thing about Valentine’s Day, which is meant to be a day of celebration, is how it seems to get many of us worked up. Too much effort can feel ‘tryhard’ and smothering, but play it too cool and you’ll seem like you’re not all that bothered. Something most of us will agree on, at least, is that wine can help smooth the proceedings of an evening. A standard bottle holds 6x125ml glasses, perfect to split between two with a meal, and finding a good wine could be just what you and your date need to be at ease

this Valentine’s Day. Having a clear idea of what you’d like may even impress your date! With this in mind, I’d like to introduce you to four wines that could really speak for themselves this February 14th. Not that this will entirely relieve of your duty to do some of the talking yourself, of course, but these are crucially wines with distinctive and lovely characteristics. I’ve given specific examples, but wines of the same style or from the same region will do the trick if you have trouble sourcing them.

Vintage Champagne Class, celebration and attention to detail If you’re out to impress or celebrate, the most classic of choices would be a bottle of Champagne. My choice would be a bottle of Laurent-Perrier, Brut, Millésimé 2006. It’s light and delicate at just 12% alcohol, with a crisp fruit flavour, like biting into a green apple or a slice of white peach. Refreshing acidity leaves your mouth watering, and there is another inimitable flavour, created by the yeast used to make the wine, often described as ‘biscuity’. All bottles labelled ‘Champagne’ have to be made in accordance with the méthode traditionnelle, a set of strict regulations covering fermentation, maturation and bottling amongst other things. Production is painstaking and scrutinised to the nth degree. Is it worth it? Of course it is. This Champagne isn’t the friendliest on the wallet (the above bottle costs around 415 RMB), but take that as evidence of the expertise required to produce it! From the instant its grapes are harvested, they are shown nothing but attention, meticulous care and a winemaker’s desire to showcase them at their very best. If these are ideas you want to emulate this Valentine’s Day, then I say show some class and grab a bottle of good bubbly.

Californian Chardonnay

Seduction and indulgence

Delicateness and ripe red fruit

You sometimes hear Chardonnay described as ‘the winemaker’s friend’; it isn't bursting with its own natural flavour, but this makes it the perfect blank canvas for the world’s finest winemakers to put their individual stamp on, something done brilliantly in California.

New Zealand-based winemakers have honed their craft to produce Pinot Noirs just as smooth and plump as their more famous French counterparts, but that contain decidedly riper fruit flavours. The romantics amongst us could go for a far softer and fruitier experience such as that offered by a bottle of Akarua, Bannockburn Pinot Noir, 2013 from Central Otago, New Zealand.

Personally, I think one of the most enchanting things you can pick out when tasting or smelling a wine is the oak that has come into contact with it. It’s often a smoky, seductive and mysterious aroma evocative of summer warmth. Chardonnays made in California can be oaked quite heavily; you and your date should be able to pick it out! Think of Chanel no. 5’s drinkable American cousin and you’ll be on the right lines. My ideal choice for this would be a bottle of Fess Parker, Santa Barbara County Chardonnay, 2015, a fine, unmistakable example of an aromatic and sun-kissed Californian Chardonnay. Most from the same county and the Napa Valley will have similar flavours. Just make sure they’re oaked well; it’ll sometimes tell you on the bottle!

This wine is all about smoothness; it even feels silky smooth in the mouth with notable but not aggressive red fruit flavours. Crucially, it’s a wine that is low in tannins. Tannins are the organic substance stored in the skins of grapes and aside from giving the wine its colour, they add a certain texture to how the wine feels in your mouth; it’s basically what you feel sticking to your gums and teeth. It’s also what can give you those super classy ‘wine lips’! You’ll steer clear of all that with this Pinot Noir, though. It’s luscious, invigorating with acidity and has flavour that lasts tremendously, so fruity you’d be tempted to think it’s sweet. Perfect for those who don’t enjoy bolder wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, New Zealand Pinot Noirs are a great choice of a romantic red.

Barolo Boldness and confidence

Lastly, if you like your wines to be bold and memorable, a Barolo (Toso), Marne Forti, 2012 is a wine that can help you make your mark. Expect big flavours, high acidity and abundant tannins in a Barolo from the Piemonte (Piedmont in English) region in northern Italy. There’s a bare simplicity about this wine that celebrates ripe fruit, oak, acidity and tannins, but all by the bucketload! Go for this if you’re an adventurous type after a really rich flavour.

So, there you have it. Four completely different wines that could say completely different things. People say that good wine is all about good people, and a big part of that is the people we choose to share it with. You needn’t dread this Valentine’s Day. Simply take a top wine and use it to inject a good helping of personality into whatever you choose to do. Go get ‘em, tiger!

UP AND OUT THE PROCESS OF DITCHING IT ALL AND MOVING TO CHINA New arrival in China Tom Williams suddenly realised he’d had enough of the mundane. Here he shares the liberating process of upending life as he knew it.

am writing this, pen to paper, on Christmas morning, sipping an instant coffee and sitting on the Bund, hoping to catch a breathtaking sunrise over the Shanghai Pudong skyline. This wasn’t exactly a bucket list experience, but I am certain there are worse places I could be at this moment. And it seems a good place to reflect on a year where I vowed to live better. Last year at this time I was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, working intermittently in the film industry, as well as writing freelance, driving an Uber, along with a myriad of other gigs where I could pick up a few extra dollars. Times weren’t too bleak, but I was living paycheck to paycheck for the most part, working long hours, and my vacations were often based around work: a documentary shoot in California wine country, a low-budget horror film in rural Appalachia. I was definitely not fulfilling my lifelong travel ambitions.

Coming out of film school in 2005, my plan was simple: make it big as a filmmaker and then move to China and spend a few years exploring the Middle Kingdom, as well as the rest of Asia. I had figured on a couple years of networking while doing grunt work on Hollywood sets and then I would sell that first screenplay for six figures and be lauded as the newest toast of the town, being wined and dined by the top super agents and industry execs. Obviously, except for the extremely lucky few, life in the movie making world never goes that way. After a decade spent in the film industry working in a variety of positions and having a few close calls, but still nothing worthy of a taking a multi-year sabbatical to travel, I decided to make a drastic decision. Staring down the barrel of a Trump presidency and the very real prospect that another ten years still might not see me as a member of the Hollywood elite, I decided

to do a 180 on my life plan. I took a quick inventory: I was single, no kids, and rented my apartment. Why not sell off what little I did own and go see the world? Selling off nearly all of your possessions is cathartic. Years spent accumulating and hoarding clothing, gadgets, and, for lack of a better word, crap had gradually filled up my two bedroom apartment plus what amounted to another room’s worth of

keepsakes in basement storage. Now I was ready to unload 90% of it and scale down to a suitcase of clothing, the “important” books, my laptop, and one camera. Most of it sold in less than two months and, surprisingly, none of it was hard to part with. It also didn’t take long to find a new home and profession in China. Rather than conducting a gruelling job search to find something in my film career trajectory, I decided to veer off completely and look for opportunities to teach English since that seemed like the fastest way to set my feet on the ground in China and allow me ample opportunity to travel and pursue filmmaking in my free time. I chose Qingdao after reading an article about Wanda Studios building the largest movie studio in the world in Huangdao; it felt like a touch of kismet. My first month in China feels like a blur

now. It feels strange to say but before coming here I hadn’t had to learn anything new and difficult in quite a while. The muscles in that part of my brain were out of shape from a decade of mostly routine. Now I was asking it to focus on learning a new language, as well as learning how to teach and navigating both the literal and figurative streets of a new land. I would often return home at the end of the day feeling completely overwhelmed and exhausted both mentally and physically. I know that many of you reading this have gone through nearly this exact same thing and that my journey is nothing special. I know that I’m preaching to the choir for the most part. My point isn’t to drone on about my experience as if it’s unique. My point is to illustrate the importance of constant reflection in life. It’s cliched but true, we’ll all be gone in a blink of an eye. Putting off our dreams for a tomorrow that

may never come is seldom the right answer and sometimes we need to reevaluate our current trajectory and adjust accordingly. As for my breathtaking Pudong sunrise, a massive cloud appeared out of nowhere eleven minutes before my weather app told me I’d be able to see the sun rise and the skies opened up. Walking back to my hotel through the rain and fog I thought about my family probably about to sit down to Christmas Eve dinner 7,000 miles and 13 hours away. I thought about how both of my parents have never moved from the town where they were born. I thought about how many people I knew that fought the daily grind and had put their dreams on hold indefinitely and I felt a wave of gratitude rush over me as I realised that there was nowhere else I would rather be in this moment and felt confident on my current path, wherever it may take me. myredstar.com

or a long time, I had dreamt romantically of strolling along the wistful water canals of Amsterdam, biking through the historical city and admiring artworks in the grand Rijksmuseum. But who needs wishful thinking when you can hop on a plane and do some exploring for real? Stepping out of the Schiphol International airport and into the crisp, fresh air, I came face to face with the iconic “I amsterdam” sign, famous for being the city’s catchphrase. I immediately felt welcomed, and ready to hit the streets. Lake Sloterplas My favourite thing to do when I first arrive in a city is take a jog around in the morning. It’s a great way to get a feel of the atmosphere, culture, and nearby

sights of a place you’re staying, faster than walking and makes you feel great! I stumbled upon Lake Sloterplas, a picturesque recreational area for fishing, sailing, and canoeing. At first, I was running with my earbuds in but I quickly took them out, preferring to listen to the calm rippling of the water, and take in the swans swimming side by side, and local people setting up for a day’s work. I could have spent all day relaxing by the lake, but there was much more to see. Food, Glorious Food! I’m a big foodie and nutritionist, so my next favourite thing to do is try the local food and popular dishes! Someone recommended that I go to Albert Cuypstraat, a street market, to find all things Amsterdam. As I sauntered through fresh tulips and seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, I came

upon a lady selling “the best Dutch herring!” and I grabbed the chance, nabbing a plate of lightly brined silvery fish topped with diced onions and a mouthwatering pickle on the side. Deliciously down the hatch and onto the next! I have to admit that my next food selection was not the healthiest, but I think I earned the extra calories from my morning run. If you have never had a fresh stroopwafel, it’s time to book yourself a trip to Amsterdam. I still remember the man’s face as he welcomed me up to his booth holding a spatula of creamy caramel. My eyes lit up as he poured waffle mixture onto the hot circular waffle iron, and I watched with anticipation as he split the warm dough in two and slathered the syrupy filling in between to glue it together. Hot off the iron and into my belly!

Hop on! With all that food tasting, it was time to bike it off! There are loads of bicycles in Amsterdam, and it's trusted by locals as a super convenient way of getting around. I tested my balance and as I rode across the Skinny Bridge, through the Jordaan neighborhood, and around the 17th Century Canal Ring. It was magical to ride along, catching snapshots of peaceful river boats, tall, big-windowed townhouses, and lively locals as they gathered cheerfully by the waterside cafes, small breweries, and restaurants. Rijksmuseum Growing up with my father an artist, it was mandatory that I visit the Rijksmuseum. My dad would be impressed, I think, at the four hours I spent there, admiring the works of Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Johannes Vermeer,

and Vincent Van Gogh. I loved being able to experience history through the eyes of such talented artists, while standing in the beautiful museum building, a testament to refinement both present and past. Europe’s Tallest Swing! Starting early in the morning, I hopped on my bike once more after stopping at a small coffee shop for a traditional turkey panini and cappuccino. I biked my way through the IJ tunnel, toward the Centraal station where I took a two minute ferry ride to the A’Dam lookout. This new attraction is where you can find Europe’s tallest swing and dangle your feet 100 meters over the edge of the sky deck! You also get a 360 degree panoramic view of the city from the observation deck on the 20th floor. If you are looking to conquer your fear of heights, this is the challenge for you! With the adrenaline

flowing through me, I had one last stop to make, so I got moving once again. Canal Cruise Instead of taking the ferry, I chose to relax and hop aboard a canal boat cruise. Greeted with a Heineken, the original Dutch beer with the green bottle (and a red star!), I sat back and enjoyed some sightseeing from a different perspective. Slowly floating through the canals, I saw the Anne Frank house, some fun local hotspots, and the many interconnected bridges of Amsterdam. The cruise dropped me off at the “Heineken Experience”, where I learned about the history of the brewery, beer making process, and how to pour, taste and drink beer like an expert! All in all, Amsterdam is a gem of a place, for any type of traveler looking for beauty, fun, and adventure.

Martynas: The Accordion Prince 19 February // 7:30pm // Grand Theatre Born in Lithuania, Martynas might be the most popular accordionist in the world. Part of the post-90s world of accordion, he breaks the walls between classical and pop music to create his own unique style. Martynas came into the spotlight when he won “Lithuania’s Got Talent”, some say as much for his good looks as for his musical skill. His debut album was released in 2013, with 15 songs ranging from the classic Hungarian Dance No. 5 from the opera Carmen, to pop music of the likes of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. Synthetic colour 2016: Qingdao's International Watercolour Biennale Yanjie Liu, REDSTAR’s new Art Watch contributor, briefs on the Watercolour Biennale, a cultural event held every other year in Qingdao.

ingdao actually holds a prominent position with regards to painting in China, and more specifically for its affinity with watercolour painting. Many nationally famous watercolour artists live in the city, and during the summer and autumn it attracts many artist groups who come to paint from life. Watercolour painting exhibitions and seminars often take place in Qingdao, and one of China’s few International Watercolour Biennales is also held here. This thoughtful and beautiful exhibition seeks to show the development of ‘modern watercolour’ in China in parallel with Britain, where the modern watercolour style developed. It was in the 18th century that watercolour became an independent artistic form in the UK, after which watercolour was widely used as a medium to express thought and depict life. William Turner and John Constable (latter pictured middle left) are good examples of this. ‘British watercolour’ was introduced into China at the end of the 18th century, via Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian missionary turned Chinese court portraitist; its stylistic impact can be seen in the 20th century watercolours of

Qingdao Art Museum, till February 28th China, and thus this exhibition displays the two countries side by side. A selection of 140 pieces from 21 renowned Chinese painters and 17 British painters, of the Royal Watercolour Society, form this intriguing exhibition, named “Synthetic Colour”. The exhibition shows an interesting aesthetic intimacy and cultural similarity, but what also shows is the works’ otherness. The definition of watercolour as a medium, the motives of paintings, and the artists’ focus points all showcase differences, which is exactly the significance of this dialogue-like exhibition of two cultures. Artists of the two nations have very different artistic languages. Is there any profound reason for this? Is there a different way of living and thinking involved, or is there more to be seen in the commonalities of the two culture? Explore these questions for yourself at the second Qingdao International Watercolour Biennale. The exhibition runs until February 28th, at the Qingdao Art Museum, 7 Daxue Road, Shinan district. The “Survival” English Project

Many of us have to use survival Chinese to talk to people on the streets of Qingdao every day. What’s it like when the tables are turned? Lily Acevedo Callejas talks to a group of Chinese and their challenging task to strike up conversation with foreign strangers.

Language limitations, shyness, and indifference or judgement from others were the main obstacles they had to overcome.

Many of us expats can agree to how challenging it is to get around without the local language. Now imagine being in your own homeland and having to speak a foreign language for the majority of your day. That is exactly the experience that Ellen, Helen, and Jade from Qingdao University of Science and Technology shared with me. I first met the three on a Saturday. I was sitting in a coffee shop in Laoshan, when five college students approached my table and asked if I could spare a few minutes for a chat. They promptly explained they were part of a “survival” project, I was intrigued.

“We are not used to even speaking out in class, let alone in English and in public. I’m the most shy of the group, so it was especially difficult for me” (Jade)

The survival project is an exercise students have to complete for an intensive English class at their university. At the beginning of the semester, participants are given the task of using English throughout their everyday interactions, with the added challenge of approaching and speaking to strangers.

“One of the strangest places I had the chance to speak at was a KFC… most people ignored me, more interested in their food. Others looked at me very strangely.” (Ellen) The payoff, the girls feel, has been more than just a class grade. They have become great friends, and the project's effect on ther confidence also exceeded their expectations. “In the beginning, it was very hard because I could barely speak a word of English, I had the knowledge in my head, but I could say nothing. Now, I’m talking to you, just like this. I know I am not perfect, but I feel more comfortable.” (Ellen)

Meat is usually wrapped in lettuce leaves, but Shan Ma Cun does things a little differently; their speciality is meat wrapped in rice rolls. At this funky place, you first soak the hard rice roll, which looks like plastic at first, in hot water. After a couple of minutes it becomes soft, and that's when you wrap in some meat and vegetables with their special sauce. It's a totally different experience! The beef at Shan Mu Cun is really good. The district now has a direct link to Qingdao's old town - the Jiaozhouwan tunnel has cut journey times to around 20 minutes and more or less put the old ferry terminal out of business. Jiaonan, to the north, is linked to the eastern municipality by the longest bridge in the world (41.58km, completed in June 2011).

Despite boasting the best beaches in Qingdao Municipality, Huangdao has for recent years played a quiet second fiddle to the hustle, bustle and commercialism of the downtown area. Recently however, changes in the city's infrastructure are set to fling this sleepy suburb into the 21st century.
