New dinosaur discovered in southern China

The Answers to Common Fitness Questions

An entirely new dinosaur species, named Tongtianlong limosus, “muddy dragon on the road to heaven”, narrowly escaped the dynamite of construction workers in southern China, who were preparing foundations for a school. Well-preserved and looking good for 66 to 72 million years old, this small “muddy dragon” is crowned with a dome-shaped crest, and has a toothless beak and winglike arms and legs.

DO I NEED TO STRETCH BEFORE I EXERCISE? A quick preworkout stretch certainly won’t do you any harm, but the evidence suggests it’s probably not that useful either.

Canadian singer Leonard Cohen dies aged 82

Could this smog-eating tower solve China's pollution problem?

Perhaps known best for his vastly popular song “Hallelujah”, Leonard Cohen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Born into a Jewish family, he later became a student of Zen Buddhism. Although he was playfully nicknamed "the high priest of pathos" and the "godfather of gloom”, the influence and appeal of this beloved poet, novelist and songwriter (and legendary ladies man) endured throughout his long career. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date.

ARE WEIGHTS JUST FOR ATHLETES AND BODY-BUILDERS? No. They help you to fight type 2 diabetes, improving your overall cardiovascular health and reducing the risk of cancer. WHAT SUPPLEMENTS SHOULD I USE? A plain old chocolate milk. WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH ‘HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING’? This approach does not work for everyone!

Dutch designer Daan Roosegarde created the Smog Free Tower. Here's how it works: using ion technology, the tower attracts and sucks in small pollution particles by sending positive ions into the air. Once inside the tower, these particles attach themselves to a grounded, negatively charged surface, called a counter electrode. The tower cleans 30,000 cubic meters of air an hour, or roughly a football stadium per day.

SPOTLIGHT and mahogany doorways and floorboards. More than a touch of modern luxury has been addded, though, through thoughtful design features: one wing, for example, is covered in vines of different shades of green, creating an artfully romantic dinner setting.

THE FIRST CINEMA IN CHINA (AND MORE…) The name ‘Qingdao’ conjures up images of beautiful coastline and European-style architecture, but what you might not know is that Qingdao is arguably the home of the first cinema in China. 1907 Restaurant and Bar (1907 光影俱乐部 ) is a restaurant, music venue, and

multi-roomed “cinema club”, that stands in an enormous converted colonial hall on Zhongshan Road. This is a place where you really feel Qingdao’s history, from the century-old cinema equipment on display to the well-preserved rooms with sweeping high ceilings

THE PERFECT HOUSE PARTY VENUE

1907 features German and Italian cuisine, with lovingly made sausages, pork, steak, and sandwiches (made using fresh-baked bread from their own bakery). A lot of effort has gone into decor, food, and service standards that leave you wanting for nothing. Sitting at the Back To School themed first floor bar and music stage, you can feel the energy that must have pulsed through the hall when dances were held in the colonial German community

There’s nothing better than a house party for gathering friends together and having a good time without the mayhem and anonmity of a bar or nightclub. But if you host a house party, there’s always the problem of cleaning up, and the danger of things getting broken! Luckily, the corporate world (and REDSTAR) can provide a solution: a perfect venue to hold a killer house party without the stress or mess. Lemon Blue( 柠檬蓝 ), a fourfloored villa in Huangdao, is born for parties, with everything you can imagine for an unforgettable night. With brightcoloured walls and modern decorations, you might mistake it for an art studio. The first floor is equipped with two computer game rooms and a huge dining

With a 60-inch wide screen and professional-quality stereo system, the KTV on the underground is a definitely a must after dinner. Besides that, mah-jong, billiards, football, and indoor basketball are also available to make your stay here a perfect one. More and more people choose not to eat meat these days. Is it healthy? REDSTAR interviewed a few people and came back with their answers.

Wolf, Student

Madi, Student

AJ Wang, Entrepreneur

I was flexitarian for most of last year for environmental and ethical reasons. I used to be quite a picky eater and didn't like that most veggie food had a lot of mushrooms. Then we studied the politics of food at university… reading about the meat industry, I felt quite sick. It was hard to disconnect my choices from their consequences, so I switched to completely veggie, and it's been easy.

I'm quite fortunate in terms of 'becoming' a vegetarian in that I have always been one. My mum went vegetarian when she was pregnant with me because of 'mad cow disease’; she didn’t want meat near her. While it’s convenient for me (in some ways) to continue how I’ve always eaten rather than to transition to eating meat, I do really believe in the environmental aspect, and love animals, so I'm happy to not eat it.

Being vegetarian, ('chisu' in China) is normally tied to religious belief, and typical Chinese vegetarian food appears too plain to most people. Boiled bok choy with tofu is an example of Chinese vegetarian food.

Katherine, Entrepreneur Technically speaking,,I don't consider myself as a vegetarian. I just cut all kinds of meat from my diet, for several reasons. I happened to pick up a book on living a low-carb life. After learning how ignorant I was about protecting the environment, I decided to quit beef at that time cause to some extent, I was a meat-lover especially considering I had just come

8

WHY ARE YOU VEGETARIAN?

back to China after a three-year degree in the UK, a country famous for dreadful cuisine. But the idea to keep a meat-free diet started to get rooted in my mind, so when I read something from a scholar in Taiwan about how eating meat is seen as a form of killing and increases your inclination to violence and aggression, I thought it was the moment to stop eating meat. And I have been feeling quite good about it since.

I never considered the negatives of meat until my health check suggested that I have high blood pressure and some other minor issues that relate to too much meat intake. So I wanted to become healthier, but also keep eating good food! I went to a well known vegan and vegetarian restaurant in Beijing, and realised vegetarian food is delicious; I also realised that 'steak = happiness' is a media-driven idea and I should think independently. I eat various nuts, garden leaves, cheese, dark bread and oatmeal, and I make milkshakes with Yagult, avocado, banana, apple, etc. I also stopped adding salt to my food, my blood pressure normalised in a month. I feel so much better and lighter, I lost 15kg in 4 months, a diet was never this easy. Plus, Trump is pro-meat lovers: my vegetarian life reflects my regard for him!

EXPERIENCE TIBET: 9 THINGS TO DO IN LHASA Tibet is a unique and mesmerising place, a travellers’ dreamland famed for its spirituality and remoteness, the harshness of climate and warmth of the people. Suki Li revisisted Tibet last month, and shares some must-do tips.

1

Learn about Thang-ga painting from a master

Thang-ga is a unique painting form in Tibetan Buddhism, the word itself means a painted cotton scroll that can be unrolled and hung up, and most likely emerged because painted scrolls of Buddha statues were easier to carry than statues; their invention allowed Buddhism a wide reach. I visited the studio of Lazha, a professional Thang-ga painter of over twenty years, and his student Lajia. Their lives are simple, painting from dawn till dusk, every day, sometimes spending several months on one painting.

They are not rich, but their life is spiritually luxurious, and they live easily, as if they have already found life’s answers. They are content, yet know what to pursue. Being surrounded by such determined artists will help you rethink your understanding of the meaning of life. Do we still remember how to do one thing at a time?

2

Find a Tibetan language partner

During my stay in Lhasa, I went to the Jokhang Temple almost every day. From dawn until late at night every day, hundreds of Tibetan people worship outside of the temple. Some spend several years journeying to this temple, kowtowing every

three steps. I met my Tibetan language partner here. He was from the rural areas of Tibet, and had a bump on his forehead from countless kowtows. He asked me: ‘Why do you take pictures? Do you really look at them afterwards? What do you learn from them?’ His questions started a conversation and we became good friends. When other Tibetans heard me learning their language (badly) they couldn’t help but come over to correct this poor Han Chinese girl, so in the end I had lots of teachers!

3

Exercise with the locals behind the Potala Palace

There is a big park behind the Potala Palace called Zongchop Lukhang. An artificial lake was made here during the 17th-century period of the Fifth Dalai Lama, Nagwang Luosang Gyatso, when the Potala Palace was rebuilt. Tibetan people love to spend their leisure time by the lake, looking at the swimming ducklings. Every morning, hundreds of people gather in the park and happily exercise together before the magnificent view of the Potala Palace. In this park, you can easily find a Tibetan partner to exercise with, but you also need to be prepared that you will have a crowd watching you!

Learn yoga

But I seem to be able to listen to my body better in that one minute, than in the two minutes in Qingdao.

5

Drink sweet tea in a local teahouse

The Lhasa people’s biggest pastime is drinking sweet tea in teahouses, where many people stay all day with family and friends. The sweet tea itself, priced at around ten yuan a pot, is made from red tea and milk powder. Its taste is light, and easier to get used to than the local butter tea. I was told that even those without money will beg on the street until they have enough for a pot of sweet tea. There is one particularly good teahouse called Bai Ling Niao ( 百灵鸟甜茶馆 ) near Jokhang Monastery, which is always full of locals.

6

Eat Tibetan French fries

Doing yoga in Tibet is difficult, due to the high altitude, but yoga is good for mental training, as it requires great concentration power. Tibetan yoga is a strand of yoga developed in Tibet according to Tantric Buddhism, involving less physical exercise with a strong focus on meditation.

A friend who stayed in Tibet for ten years told me that as well as traditional Tibetan yoghurt and rice, the French fries there were a must-try. I didn’t believe her—until I tried them myself.

If I can hold a position for two minutes in Qingdao, I can only hold it for one in Tibet.

The fries in Tibet were cut into larger and thicker pieces, the outside crispy, and the

inside hot and soft. The potato melts in your mouth. But what’s special is the Tibetan chilli seasoning, not too hot, perfectly flavourful. They’re the best fries I’ve ever tasted. I asked my friend whether she knew if the Tibetan fries were a result of Western influence, and she told me: ‘No, Tibetan people have been eating potatoes for a very long time, and you can find a lot of Tibetan dishes with potatoes. I suppose the history of fries in Tibet is longer than the history of fries in France.’

7

Visit a local home

Tibetan people are friendly. They don’t like to be disturbed, but they are very interested in foreigners. If you are sincere, and can communicate with them— most of them speak semi-fluent Mandarin—it shouldn’t be too difficult to be invited to a local’s home. I visited a new friend’s home, and was shown several antelope heads, and huge yak heads around a century old. He then showed me two hundred Tibetan knives with handles inlaid with jade, and Qing dynasty furniture. Make a Tibetan friend and discover your own surprises!

8

// TRAVEL /

Meditate

A lot of people go to Tibet in order to seek inner peace, and meditation is an essential step to this. In Tibet, you can meditate anywhere, in a crowd or by yourself. If you are interested in meditation, ‘The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying’ is an insightful starting point. In the Museum of Tibet I saw a ‘Mandala Palace’ made of sand. Ten monks work for four days to finish these palaces, and push the sand into a river afterwards. Similar to Tibetan butter sculptures, they represent life—great effort, short harvest, followed by the pain of loss.

9

Learn to give, and enjoy what’s around you

Tibet is not a place for busy minds. Try to slow down and ask yourself—why are you so busy, what is it for? In Tibet, art and singing are everywhere. Even the yaks used for ploughing and pulling carts are well dressed. They do it for the sake of beauty itself. I was quite confused with so many beggars on the streets and in the restaurants in Lhasa. Several taxi drivers from Henan

Province told me that Tibetan people are very lazy, that they beg on the streets, sit in a teahouse for the whole day, and seldom work. Tibetan people may not be rich, but they are ready and happy to give to others. I questioned a Tibetan friend who gives money to almost every beggar she sees: doesn't it encourage laziness? ‘Just give when you feel like it, if you can afford it. You don’t need to think too much,’ she answered with a smile. Am I thinking too much? I have to admit, it makes me feel warm to know that if one day, I were broke and couldn’t even afford a meal, lots of strangers on the street would be willing to offer me a hand. They don’t ask. They trust and give. Isn’t that the answer to a happy life? myredstar.com

THIRD CULTURE GIRL Have you ever wondered what it's like to not know where you are from? Charlotte Morgan McGarry talks to REDSTAR about how growing up internationally has shaped her.

S

tarting my new life in China was like being a fresher at university again. I had to introduce myself a lot. Back in Cambridge, this consisted mainly of telling people which subject I study, or which college I’m at. Here in Beijing, the conversation always centres on the seminal question: “ 你是哪国人 ?” (Where are you from?) I always reply, “ 英国人 ” (England). I certainly feel culturally closest to England, having lived there for all my formative years. But since I don’t look like a typical Brit, people are rarely satisfied with that answer. “ 混血儿吗 ?” (Mixed race?) comes their reply. Then I have to explain the full story: I'm ethnically Irish, Cypriot and Hong Kong Chinese, but was born in Scotland, lived in Azerbaijan, then England for the most part, and now Dubai. I’m a typical “Third Culture Kid”, a term coined by American sociologist Ruth Hill Useem to describe children brought up in

12

a culture different to that of their parents, and to the country with which they hold a passport. For many TCKs, the question ‘Where are you from?’ inspires panic (“What do I say?”) or irritation (“Not this again…”). It always gets me thinking about the question of identity and belonging. Where am I from? Where is home? I’ve been answering this question all my life, but still don't have a concrete answer. Some might find this odd, but I think it’s extremely liberating: I am at home nowhere, therefore I am at home everywhere. Being from so many different places allows me to pick and choose aspects of my

background, to construct different versions of myself for different situations, like masks I can take on and off at will. Depending on the person asking, I play up the Irishness of my surname, emphasize my English accent, or reminisce on summers spent eating loukomades in sleepy Cypriot towns. This means that wherever I am, I almost always find cultural common ground with people I get talking to. In this sense, it doesn't

I think it’s extremely liberating: I am at home nowhere, therefore I am at home everywhere. to return to during the holidays, with weekend pub traditions and lifelong friends who live just round the corner. During the holidays, it’s a strange feeling going back to countries you’re supposedly from, wandering around like a tourist armed with only a map and limited language skills.

matter that I don’t have close ties to my home country; being able to establish connections so freely creates a kind of imagined community in place of a physical one, accessible all over the world. My mother is particularly good at unearthing these connections. Having grown up in a rural village in central Scotland, her affinity with fellow Scots is strong and no matter where we are in the world, she always manages to find one. When she does, her accent intensifies, her way of establishing a deeper connection with a shared link to home. My siblings and I used to laugh at her for it, but now, as a Brit floating around in Beijing, I’ve realised that I too jump at the chance to connect with fellow yingguoren. There are downsides too, of course. Like many TCKs, I’ve often wondered what it would feel like to have a proper hometown

But in exchange for not being part of a close-knit, physical community, I get to experience being a citizen of the world, and that is something I feel truly blessed for. It means I feel comfortable being constantly on the road, in any country or situation, without feeling uprooted or like I’m missing out on a sense of home. Perhaps this is because for me, home isn't a place - it’s a feeling, created by spending time with people who make me feel loved and affirmed. When your family is scattered across six countries, this ‘time’ often refers to FaceTime rather than actual meet ups, but to me, that doesn’t matter. The wide diaspora of the McGarry clan means that I know there’s always someone, somewhere in the world, awake, available and looking out for me. My year abroad in China is just another square in patchwork of experiences that make up who I am. So far it’s been an incredibly valuable one. Living in a country that’s so different to the West, and in which I knew no-one, has forced me to go out and pave my own way. This has created an incredible wealth of new experiences, some

daunting, but all valuable in nudging me along on the journey to the present day me. In the process of writing this article, I kept thinking back to one of my favourite quotes: ‘You are the books you read, the films you watch, the music you listen to, the people you meet, the dreams you have, the conversations you engage in. You are what you take from these… You are a collective of every experience you have ever had in your life. So drown yourself in a sea of knowledge and existence. Let the world run through your veins and let the colours fill your mind.’ As the product of many different cultures and countries, my identity is not rooted to any one of them, but the sum of all. As a result, I’m constantly aware of influences and experiences which add to the melting pot that is me. Regardless of your background, I think it’s a valuable thought to take to heart. Let it serve as a daily reminder to live your life to the fullest and engage in everything life throws your way. Let it encourage you to reach out and connect with the people, places and cultures around to you. By doing so, you expose yourself to the powerful synergy of other worlds–and I can tell you from experience, it’s a wonderful thing to see. myredstar.com

QINGDAO’S

As winter takes hold of Qingdao, the grey sky weighs down your spirit and the wind chills your bones, the warmth and relaxation of Qingdao’s spas and bathhouses beckon. Naomi Newell explores this age-old pampering tradition.

H

ot springs, and in turn bath houses, have long played an important part in Eastern culture. China has numerous hot springs and was one of the earliest countries to make use of them. According to folklore, the Yellow Emperor (one of the legendary Chinese sovereigns) ‘bathed in the springs of Mount Huang and was pleased’. Throughout the Imperial period various emperors and literati showed a predilection for thermal waters and the use of hot springs evolved, from a place of worship, into one for medicinal use or convalescence. Li Shizhen, a Ming botanist and pharmacologist, wrote of the therapeutic properties of hot springs in his “Compendium of Materia Medica”, observing that as well as useful for boiling eggs, the springs could heal scabies, syphilis and even paralysis of the limbs. More recently, springs have been popularized as places of recreation. I have been exploring what Qingdao and its surroundings have to offer. Close to Qingdao, and easily accessible by public transport, is the small town of Jimo

14

to the high salt content, the waters have long been used to treat rheumatic diseases. There are various spas around the town, but one particularly popular choice is Ocean Spring 海洋温泉 . An advantage of this resort is its proximity to the sea – a sandy beach lies at its doorstop. I was surprised to find the beach deserted but for a couple of girls taking selfies (possibly invigorated by a day at the spa). The hazy sky had dissolved into the diluted, blue-grey sea, to create a languid expanse, perforated

only by two white dots from a lonely boat and the moon above. The grandiose exterior of the overlooking Arabian-style building was equalled by elegant interior furnishings. Entrance tickets include access to pools, relaxation rooms (with the option to stay the night at no extra cost) and free fruit. The large swimming pool is ideal for children, and the rainforest, pirate-themed decorations create a fun, lively atmosphere. Following the oriental fashion, I decided to sample a bathhouse myself. In Qingdao. Mu Qing Tang Quan spa is favoured by many Chinese and Koreans. Upon arriving, I noticed how attentive the staff were, and continued to be so throughout my visit. The bathing rooms are separated into male and female, as the soaking process is au naturel. For a rather conservative Brit, at first it was uncomfortable, but after a few minutes, and aided by my short-sightedness, my inhibitions evaporated. It was indeed a relaxing experience. The pools bubbled away at a toasty 38°C and there were saunas and steam rooms for further purification.

and anmo : the former being medicinal and used to treat injuries or muscle problems, while the latter is more for relaxation and rejuvenation. Cupping and scraping is also widely available and is believed to relieve pain by dislodging blocked energy. I was warned of the potential discomfiture beforehand, but had not realized the experience would be one of pain rather than pleasure. The masseuse’s technique was very thorough. Massage oil was said to be unnecessary as it made the skin too slippery, and it was true, through clothes the masseuse managed to maintain a firm grasp. A useful phrase to learn in advance might be, 请按得轻一点 qing ande qingyidian, which means “a little lighter please”.

A variety of different body treatments and masks were available, made from fresh papaya, banana and other exotic fruits which the masseuse would chop up. After soaking and rinsing, you are given warm pyjamas and are free to explore. On the second floor alone there is an internet room, crèche, gym, cinema and restaurant. The floors are heated, everything is very clean and the food is inexpensive. There are large areas for reading, relaxing and reclining. The spa is open 24/7 and you could certainly spend the whole day there. Another avenue you might wish to consider is Chinese massage. Like acupuncture, Chinese massage is based around the meridian channels 经络 , a network through which the vital energy 气 circulates. Following a Chinese friend’s recommendation, I booked an appointment at 任青梅 on 金田路 . In this area there are many massage parlours (including blind massage). Their bright neon signs flashing 推拿按摩 (tuina, anmo) are hard to miss. In fact, there is a difference between tuina

An alternative therapy for alleviating stress and fatigue is a fish pedicure, a practice that is now gaining popularity around the world. Fish spas originated in Turkey, a country renowned since antiquity for its health-giving thermal waters. However, more convenient to visit is 青青鱼疗 fish spa in Taidong. The salon is clean, the chairs comfortable, the staff courteous and the price really cheap! A 40 minute session is only 20 yuan, and even less when you add their WeChat. After a busy day at work or school it is the perfect place to sit back and relax as the gurra rufa or ‘doctor fish’ nibble away. The fish had a good appetite and my feet felt and looked noticeably smoother afterwards. Taidong itself is an ideal place for a makeover as nail salons and hairdressers’ parlours are dotted around the streets. Manicures are reasonably priced, with a wide variety of styles. And of course, you can end the day wandering around the much-loved night market. If you don’t feel like the trip to Jimo, you can’t walk far in Qingdao without running into a massage parlour. As we burrow into the coldest months, and closer to Christmas and the New Year, arm yourself with a few useful words (qīng yidian “a little lighter please!”; zhòng yidian “a little harder please!”) and treat your body to some winter relaxation. myredstar.com

CAMPERS IN THE STORM:

A SURVIVOR’S JOURNAL Paul McMahon recounts a harrowing night camping on a windswept Laoshan.

I

was at basecamp (Andy’s living room) going through my final check. Since my first hike in March, I had become obsessed with reducing the weight of the bag I was obliged to haul up Laoshan. That day, I was pleased with an impressively light 7kg, but like any drastic weight loss, it was to prove near fatal. The slightly overcast weather was a blessing. When we last went camping, under July’s scorching sun, within 20 minutes we were soaked in our own sweat and sitting exhausted very close to the bottom of the mountain. Today we passed the same spot without a glance, and I was confident we would get to the campsite in no time and this mild drizzle wouldn’t last much longer. There was a slight dampness from the branches and vines brushing against me, but nothing to arouse concern in a seasoned adventurer, I assured myself. Oh, how terribly wrong I was. After two hours, we stopped for lunch at a source of fresh water. The drizzle was still falling on us and Andy’s plan to cook noodles in his new little pot was scuppered by the lack of dry wood. So, we ate my sandwiches instead. My waterproof jacket seemed to be permitting certain areas, mostly my arms, to get mildly damp and I was feeling a little nippy now that we weren’t moving. But we ate, chatted, packed up again and set off. We had been on this trail once before and I remembered what followed the water source was a short, slightly more inclined climb. It’s funny how the brain likes to

16

myredstar.com

play tricks on itself. The climb was, in fact, almost vertical, on ground reduced to mud. I would put a foot forward and it would slide back down the slope taking me with it. My trail was a pronounced groove in the mud marking my pathetic and unwanted descent. I scrambled desperately, using what I could grab hold of to haul my increasingly damp pack and sodden body up the slope. The drizzle was constant and branches that had earlier lightly brushed against us now greedily took every opportunity to slap us with cold, wet mockery. Moments after

finishing our pleasant lunch, I was utterly soaked. The view we were hiking for, of a mountain range stretching out in its full, unapologetic glory, was nowhere to be seen. Instead we had 10 feet of visibility just before dark ugly rainclouds enveloped our world. Any trace of pleasure drained from the day. As we slowly got higher, the clouds got denser, the drizzle got nastier and the cold took over. Those parts of the body deemed less important for survival began to go numb and bubbles came squelching out of the top of my boots with every step. My “waterproof” jacket had turned out to be the absolute antithesis of that description. Having endured six hours of this punishment, with my faith in God coming into question, we reached the peak as the sun set. I planned to sleep in a oneman tent, but the moment I stopped moving, the cold worked its way into the very marrow of my bones. In less than a minute all feeling had gone from my body, I had no control over my hands and could do nothing to cease the spasms of

shivering. The blood drained from my face, my lips turned blue and the reaper came whistling down the trail. I had no choice but to scramble under Andy’s half-prepared tarp, change into my only dry piece of clothing (a light jacket), shudder into the sleeping bag and pull the outer shell of my tent around me. It was 5:30pm, and I would remain in my dank cocoon for the next 14 hours, fearing my shivering would cause a landslide. Andy’s tarp is ideal for protection in pleasant weather, flat ground camping; on top of Laoshan it merely served as a misery gatherer. A few times the tarp would be whipped from its mooring and expose our pitiful sleeping conditions to the extremities of mountain top rain. Everything, from the oxygen I was breathing to the darkest secrets in my soul, was soaked.

At some points in the night I started getting delirious, convinced that there was somebody else up on the mountain with us that I had to get up and talk to. But the wind would snap the tarp, a bucketful of rain would hit me in the face, and I would be slapped back to the torment that was our camping trip. It felt like morning would never come. I couldn’t remember what being warm and dry felt like. My trousers, socks and shoes lay surrendered to the elements; cold and soaking, waiting for me to put them back on and hike down in the morning. I wanted to cry. I tried to imagine being in my own bed, under my duvet with the AC blasting hot air onto me. But these fantasies only seemed to make me feel colder. Then, on one of my rare occasions of poking my head outside the sleeping bag to make sure I wasn’t in Hell, the sky seemed a smidge lighter and drier. I retreated into the

damp bag and shivered. I was too afraid to hope. After a while I tried it again, and the sky was much brighter. The sun had arrived and the clouds had gone. The longest night of my life was over. I shivered and crawled from my pit and pulled on the soaked clothes. There was no conversation. We were as miserable as each other. My principles of neatness were abandoned as I shoved everything into the rucksack and, in a mood comparable to that of a punched bear, got going. We left our campsite at 7:35am, and by noon my dream had come true. I was rolled up on my bed, AC blasting, and vowing never to complain about being too hot again. Though, for the rest of the day, I was terrified that this was all part of the delirium and at any moment I would wake up on that frightful mountain again. myredstar.com

THE OPIUM WAR: HOW IT ALL BEGAN We all talk about it, but how well do you know the story of the war that began China’s modern history? Paul McMahon briefs REDSTAR on this pillar of China’s modern identity, and telling example of the bullying power of the West: the First Opium War.

T

he mid-19th century witnessed a monumental power shift in East Asia. Since 1793, when Britain, through the Macartney missions, had failed to get a better deal in their trade negotiations for the Chinese tea that was costing them a fortune, the Qing Dynasty had been aloof and refused to trade for anything but ‘barbarian’ silver. However, Britain’s colonisation of India meant they had access to the world’s greatest supply of a product the Chinese had always craved: opium. Ignoring the illegal status of the drug and under the protection of the greatest navy in the world, the East India Company would ship the drug to Canton where British merchants had set up trading warehouses. The most famous of these, and possibly the biggest drug dealers in history, were two Scotsmen: William Jardine and James Matheson. They had little concern for the ill effects of their trade, with Jardine having once said: “Opium is the safest and most gentlemanlike speculation I am aware of.” Clipper ships were built for

18

myredstar.com

speedier passage from India to Canton and the smuggling of opium became, for Jardine and Matheson among others, an astronomical success (the company they set up is a huge conglomerate today). The Chinese soon realised indifference to Britain was no longer viable, and levels of addiction throughout the Middle Kingdom began to cause great concern in Beijing. China switched indifference for a more aggressive stance towards the drug and the British merchants peddling it. The British on the other hand, from

merchants to government, knew that their best interests lay in allowing the opium trade to continue unharmed. In 1838, Emperor Daoguang sent Viceroy Lin Zexu to solve the problem. Lin was considered a morally upright and incorruptible man and, though his actions started a war that would ultimately humiliate China and end the ruling dynasty system, he is still highly respected today. Lin demanded that the British in Canton dump all their opium into the bay and sign a contract to the effect that if they trafficked the drug again, they would be executed. Briton Charles Elliot

// CULTURE /

attempted negotiation with Lin but after a brief stint of being kidnapped, had no choice but to agree to destroy the opium stock. The British Parliament regarded this as destruction of Crown property and were not happy. Meanwhile, two British sailors, in a drunken fit, beat a local Canton man to death. Lin wanted the sailors handed over for execution, however, Elliot refused, instead having them tried on a British ship. Unsurprisingly, tensions rose and the British navy set up a blockade on Canton. On November 3rd 1839 a British ship called the Royal Saxon tried to break through the blockade. The British opened fire and the Chinese, hearing the shooting, sent their war junks out to defend the Royal Saxon. All hell broke loose, and the first shots of the Opium War were actually those of the Chinese mistakenly defending a British ship. It is important to remember that in 1839 the British were leading the world’s industrial revolution and in many ways were the most advanced nation on earth. From their position of power, they set about engaging in gunship diplomacy with a Chinese dynasty that had fallen behind the times. Their fleet moved up to the island of Chusan near Shanghai and again made their demands, all of which the Chinese ignored. So, they opened fire. The Chinese deserted the city. The emperor, displeased with Lin Zexu, replaced him with another official, Qi Shan. Qi Shan was given the power to negotiate

with Elliot, but with both sides refusing to budge, nothing was achieved. In the midst of this lack of progress a rumour reached Elliot that the Emperor was going to restart the war. Elliot responded immediately by attacking a small fort near Canton. The British had developed new warships and they arrived in China just in time for the battle. The new warships were devastatingly successful. In the battle 600 Chinese died compared to 30 being wounded on the British side (wounds caused by their own artillery overheating and exploding, rather than Chinese fire). Elliot was called to Beijing to again negotiate. They came up with a treaty with which neither side was happy. The British

felt Elliot was too soft and should have pushed for more, especially the legalisation of opium (a drug trade that Elliot despised); the Emperor was furious that his country was even considering seceding anything. He would later regret not accepting the treaty. Elliot was replaced by a man called Sir Henry Pottinger, who set about eradicating all resistance to British influence in the area. In May of 1841 the Chinese began attacking British factories in Canton in the day and, by night, launched fire-ships at her docked fleet. The British responded with attack and a short-lived truce followed. Pottinger was not a man to negotiate when he had the upper hand and so, the fleet sailed up the coast towards Shanghai destroying and conquering Chinese forts and outposts on the way. Reportedly, everywhere they went, the British found opium pipes beside abandoned Chinese posts. It seemed that Chinese soldiers were getting high on the very drug they were being ordered to eradicate. Finally, the British took Nanking, and with it the gateway to China, the mighty Yangtze River. The emperor knew he was beaten, and the Chinese had no choice but to sign the humiliating Treaty of Nanking on 29 August 1842. Among the various articles in the treaty there was the payment of $21 million to the UK, one-sided trade agreements, and, most importantly, the handing over of Hong Kong to the British. myredstar.com

FROM QINGDAO TO EUROPE IN A FEW HOURS’ SLEEP Earlier this year, Zoe Zheng made the most of the brand new flight path between Qingdao and Frankfurt. Here she shares the details of the first half of her trip in Germany, and how Europe appears to Chinese eyes.

I

had a stroke of unimaginable luck. Just when I planned to travel overseas, Lufthansa solved the biggest problem I had, by launching their new direct flight from Qingdao to Frankfurt. Since April this year, they have started having three flights every week: fantastic news for me, since it means I don't need to waste a second in the airport, and can also travel with an airline known for its high safety standards. Lufthansa is a brand worthy of your trust. All I need to do is prepare myself for better sleep, better food, and a better experience of premium services on the ground and in the air. All the new Qingdao-Europe flights depart around noontime. I liked the flight time a lot, because I could kiss goodbye to my boy

20

myredstar.com

after dropping him at kindergarten, and then head to the airport, ready to chase the sun and fly to Europe. I chose the Premium Economy Class, just launched in 2014, that gives you an extra 50% space (plus a more comfortable seat!), which really lets you relax. You don't need to worry about communicating with air hostesses, because

every Europe-China flight has Chinese native airline hostesses. If you don't fancy sleeping to save energy, you can kill time very happily watching films and TV dramas through the built-in TV. Oh, and here comes to the most important part: food and drink! Once you’re on board, the hostess serves a welcome drink immediately, and later you can choose one of two delicious meals. After 12 hours or so of travel, I landed in Frankfurt around 6pm local time. For the accommodation, I chose the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel, opened in 1975. As its name implies, the hotel is located between Terminal 1 of Frankfurt International Airport and the A3 freeway. You can easily get to buses and regional and suburban railway stations. Since Frankfurt is

a hub of transportation, the hotel supplies a free early bird breakfast from 3:30-6:30 am. My schedule was to spend two days in Frankfurt and then head to Lisbon. After a good sleep in the Sheraton hotel, I started to my first European tour. It took about 15 minutes by subway to get from my hotel to the downtown area, where most of the famous sights are closely bunched together. I chose to walk around Frankfurt, because it gives me the impression that churches are everywhere, for people to just step in and pray. This makes Europe seem like a holy experience for a Chinese person! I started my walk from Ostzeile ( 罗马贝格 广场 ) which is the historical city centre. It features countless magnificent halftimbered homes. The traditional “Ostzeile” housing row was rebuilt in 1986 according to the original architectural plans. You can see the city hall, a former Patrician villa, featuring a three-gabled roof. I found out that it has served as Frankfurt’s city hall since 1405! It is still the seat of the city’s lord mayor to this day. Between the Emperor’s Cathedral ( 皇帝大教堂 ) and the Ostzeile ( 罗马贝格广场 ) is Frankfurt’s redeveloped old town, including authentic replicas and new constructions. The Emperor’s Cathedral ( 皇帝大教堂 ) is the most famous cathedral. It was consecrated in the name of St Bartholomew in 1239, and was chosen as the official site for the myredstar.com

elections of emperors of the Holy Roman Empire in 1356 CE; a total of ten imperial coronation ceremonies took place there between 1562 and 1792. Walking further, I went into the Saalgasse ( 萨尔巷 ). If you are a fan of architecture, you can’t miss this street. It’s home to a series of stunning modern townhouses designed and built by various architects between 1981 and 1986 on the site of a former medieval row of houses, and is today a perfect example of postmodern architecture. Walking down the street and turning to the riverside, the River Main spread out in front of me. The 170-metere-long pedestrian Eiserner Steg bridge ( 铁桥 ) spans the river. Construction of this famous iron footbridge began in 1868, and it connects Frankfurt’s old town with the popular going-out district of Sachsenhausen. From here you can also see the twin towers of the European Central Bank. There are hardly any high-rise buildings in Frankfurt. Going up towards the down town area, I visited Goethe House ( 歌德故居 ), the birthplace and childhood home of the writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Here, he wrote such celebrated works as The Sorrows of Young Werther and the beginning of Faust. After a long walk, here comes my favourite part: food. At the Alt-Sachsenhausen ( 萨 克森豪森老城区 ), you can taste traditional German food like sauerkraut with all kinds of meat, and Frankfurt’s famous apple wine served from a stoneware jug. And of course, you can’t miss the German beer! In the nearby pedestrian areas are the Architecture Museum, Partickus Modern Art

22

Exhibition, and Film Museum. If you have more time and you are with your kids, the Zoo and Botanical Gardens are also worth checking out.

TIPS FOR FRANKFURT TRAVEL The super-saver card: For individuals: 1-day ticket: €10.5; 2-day ticket: €15.5. You can discover the main metropolis with this card. Holders of the Frankfurt Card can get up to 50% off admission to 27 museums, the Frankfurt Zoo, the Palmengarten and the Main Tower. Moreover, the card provides free and unlimited use of the city’s public transport system, including trips to and from the airport. It also offers holders discounts on guided city walks and motorised city tours, at numerous theatres, indoor and outdoor public pools, and at many diverse shops and restaurants. Bring your own toiletries! To stop waste, hotels don’t usually supply disposable slippers and toothbrushes. Cosmetics I would definitely recommend that Chinese visitors buy some cosmetics in local chain supermarkets. They’re good quality for a low price.

China’s Palm Print by Xiao Chunlei 18 December // 3pm // Fangsuo Commune

Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones 17 – 18 December // 10 am & 3 pm // SoTheatre An award-winning broadway hit performed in more than fifteen countries, the shadow puppet show Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones is a clever wonder of music and movement creation. This popular children’s show is a sweet, funny series of mini-tableaus designed to captivate children, with each puppet assembled onstage. Random household knickknacks, bits and bobs, morph into magical puppets before the transfixed gaze of the young audience. So far, people, puppet ninjas, chickens, and teddy bears have materialised through Jeff Achtem’s craft—who knows what will be next? Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones was dreamed up by the Canadian Achtem, director of the theatre company Bunk Puppets, a man who spent his childhood without television and

26

in experimental play. A ten-year veteran of the art of clowning, Achtem also trained in film—so knows his child audience, and what will enthrall them. He is a master of jokes, light, dark, movement and stillness; calls life into the spaces and the silences of theatre, into a display of capering shadowcreatures. Every moment of the show brings out his profound knowledge of the power of make-believe—adults too will become reacquainted with their inner child, awed by Achtem’s extraordinary imagination and his ability to share his fictional worlds. Prepare to enter the realm of Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones. No age restrictions—children aged 5 to 100 years are all warmly invited! For tickets, call 135 7382-0321 or email 3239607600@qq.com

Xiao Chunlei, a blogger and writer with rich experience including writing for China’s National Geographic, is releasing his new book collection, China’s Palm Print. It includes three books: 自然骨魄 (The Bones and Soul of Nature), 大地栖居 (The Earth’s Perch), and 华夏边城 (Border Towns of China). “Every wrinkle on the earth of China is engraved with culture, just like a palm print that tells the survival story of Chinese people. I travelled all across China to try to decode the palm print left on the earth, but unlike fortune tellers who use the palm to predict the future, I explain how the past shaped today.” [Quoted from his book.] Some critics define his book as one of magic; it's certain that it is an beautiful mix of the historical, the mysterious and the geographic with classic travel writing. Mr Xiao’s book is an unmissable window into the influence of China on nature, and how nature has shaped China. Mr Xiao is coming to Fangsuo this December to give a lecture on his new books. Come to hear the intriguing thoughts of this traveller and lover of nature (all talks are in Chinese).

CHINA’S MODERN WORLD OF BUSINESS: A FOREIGNER’S PERSPECTIVE China’s business world, often difficult for foreigners to understand, is currently undergoing massive change but micMAC Global Solutions President Tom Harper is well-placed to advise foreign business people coming to Qingdao. Sophie Comber delves into the workings, background culture, and driving forces of Chinese business.

I

n China, and in Qingdao alone, the sheer number of foreign-owned businesses in active residence shouldn’t be underestimated. International business styles stream in to this port city to mingle, and sometimes clash, with existing business styles that have long been rooted in Chinese society. Over the last decade, businessmen and women from every corner of the globe have poured into Qingdao, drawn by the ‘Chinese dream’ of a massive market waiting to be tapped, and the hope of making it big in a booming Chinese business world. ‘How many businesses? I don’t even know. I’m on the board of the Qingdao International Business Association, and I haven’t a clue how many total businesses are here,’ Mr Harper laughs. ‘We have in Qingdao, people not just from America or Canada, but France and Italy and Russia, a lot of Germans are here, Hungarian, Lithuanian, Eastern European, a lot of African businesses are here. Qingdao just seems to attract them all. There are hundreds of business expats here.’

28

myredstar.com

We are constantly told, and constantly observe China has rich cultural and traditional foundations that underwrite visible everyday business operations. It has been clear since the famed Macartney mission of 1783 that business here is carried out in a very different style to that which many Westerners inherently expect. So what does Tom Harper believe are the most important things for the myriad foreigners in Qingdao, and greater China, to understand about the unwritten rules of Chinese business? Mr Harper, having been in turn a tourist, student, professor, and finally a businessman in China since his first visit in 2002, has long been in a prime position to observe how language and cultural clashes, misunderstandings, and lacked knowledge can all be unwanted barriers to the easy flow of business in China. The Wholly Foreign-Owned Enterprise (WFOE) micMAC Global Solutions specialises in intercultural and language consulting for foreign companies about China, and for Chinese companies about the West. micMAC’s clients have included five-

star hotels, large state-owned enterprises, international schools, and local businesses engaged in overseas trade. Mr Harper states essential qualities for foreigners doing business in China are adaptability, flexibility and knowledge of local protocol. He emphasises the importance of understanding the ins and outs of the gatherings at restaurants, teahouses and karaoke bars that form the stage upon which so many business deals are struck in China, where crucial personal relationships are forged that make it possible for a professional relationship to work. ‘Chinese business is very relationshipbased, and you must make relationships with people,’ Mr Harper states. ‘The personal and the professional aren’t really divided here. They’re very close’. A fruitful partnership between two businesses, and thus strong business operations, rely on these relationships, referred to in Mandarin as guanxi (lit. ‘closed/ contained system’). When aiming to make a cross-cultural business deal, the guanxi bond of trust and friendship comes first, and the successful professional relationship after. The second cannot grow without the first. ‘When we think of a relationship in the West, it’s like: I’m your friend, you’re my friend—but a relationship in China goes a lot deeper than that, it’s: I’m your friend, you’re my friend, and we’re going to help each other.’ Mr Harper uses an example: micMAC’s discovery that the quality of a project

广告 • 商务

presentation given to prospective Chinese partners has much less correlation with the pitch’s success than it would in the West. If potential investors did not know and trust the presenter personally, there would be no deal done. ‘If I want to get approval for building something, if I have a relationship with the government, they know me, they trust me, they’ve been out to dinner with me, and I’ve bought dinner for them, that’s a bridge to my result,’ he says. Mr Harper agrees that some foreigners running businesses in Qingdao understand guanxi and act accordingly, but others do not. ‘The most common error is with cultural understanding, not taking the time to build proper relationships first. In America, we don’t think about having to meet the government officials and being friends, but here you really have to think about that,’ he says. ‘Often Western companies who first come to China will say they understand that, but they have a different idea of what it means. I think they expect it to go faster than it does. Guanxi has to build over time.’ A time-honoured method of cultivating guanxi with prospective Chinese business partners is to invite them to a banquet. ‘I’m at dinner with new people, I’ll take a small gift to them—following the details of guanxi tells them we care enough to do

things for them. The more we can actually follow the customs, the better it is.’ Mr Harper says as well as learning phrases of Chinese to help show respect for culture, foreigners can give gifts such as engraved pens, overseas delicacies from their hometown, and foreign wines, which may be wrapped in the auspicious colours of scarlet and gold. Thoughtfulness is key, for the symbolic value of such gifts will always dwarf their material value. Respect for the rules of local business is equally vital, whether regarding paperwork, bureaucratic approval, or everyday logistics and financial arrangements. ‘You can’t rush things through, you must listen to your Chinese partners. You have to understand that when someone says: yes, we’ll do this—it might mean, yes, we’ll do it if we like you. It might mean: we’ll do it in a year. Or it might mean: no, we’re not going to do it, we just don’t want to make you feel bad,’ he says. Mr Harper explains that doing business in China requires much patience, and approaching every transaction as a learner enthusiastic to be taught. ‘If you can be humble, and willing to give and take, you’ll have a lot better success,’ he says. It would also be a mistake to assume Chinese business culture and practices

remain alike across the country. The closer you get to urbanised centres such as Shanghai, the more ‘Westernised’, taskorientated, number-orientated business styles tend to be encountered. ‘So “here’s my contract, here’s my price, here’s what I can do for you,” I can negotiate that almost like I would in America, because it’s much more like what we’re used to—Shanghai’s a big business hub for foreigners…but if you go to Yantai or Jinan, then you get more of the older style of business.’ Taking a national bird’s eye view of China, Mr Harper explains that the reasons for this stark difference in styles stem partly from legal structures. ‘China is like other agricultural economies. In most places outside the huge cities it’s very, very relationship-based, because contract law is not strong. So if you don’t trust someone, you don’t want to work with them, because you may not have an enforceable contract,’ he says. ‘In the West, I see you, you have a good product, I need it, your price is great, we make an agreement, and that’s that. If you break the agreement, we go to court, I sue you. That can work. But that can’t really happen so easily here, so it’s got to be relationship-based.’ The guanxi system can also be linked to China's agricultural history. Unlike the West, where animal husbandry took precedence, myredstar.com

/ BUSINESS // 广告 • 商务 there are many, many issues they’ve had to deal with for a long time.’ With the Green Growth Tenet of the Five Year Plan, China is planning more moves towards fighting the environmental pollution that has been the dark twin to the country’s rapid development, and working towards environmentally friendly economic growth. Foreign entrepreneurs with green technologies, products and services will likely find welcome opportunities in China as a result. Mr Harper states such green development relates to China’s transformation from an agricultural society into an urban society.

China has been a nation of farmers for over four thousand years. ‘An agricultural society depends on relationships to work well. If you don’t have that, well then, you have a problem, because this is your neighbour for the next fifty years.’ says Mr Harper. Several major trends drive modern Chinese business. The march of the country’s manufacturing away from a long-term heavy industry model and towards highquality exports, and its shift towards green growth and other more sustainable economic forms, are chief factors in the movement of business and economic activity. In March this year, the People’s Republic of China formally launched the 13th Five Year Plan, to stretch over the years 2016 to 2020. The goals of the plan are geared towards smoothing the issues hindering China’s economic development. Profits from manufacturing make up 40 percent of China’s economy, and the industry employs up to 130 million people. ‘China was the manufacturing hub for so much of the world for a long time. That’s beginning to change, and it’s really okay, because it’s better for the workers. The prices are going up, their wages are going up, their benefits are going up, and that’s all good for them,’ says Mr Harper. ‘But when I was a kid, which was a long time

ago, we used to get things from Japan, and when it said “made in Japan” we knew it was gonna break soon. This is in the sixties,’ he grins. ‘But now Japan makes high-quality exportable stuff, best in the world, exports it all over the world. China’s going in the same direction, so this changes the whole outlook.’ Nor has the demand for foreign workers remained unaltered by China’s economic progress and the rise in its homegrown talent. The tertiary graduate population now numbers well over seven and a half million. ‘The cushy expat package you used to get working in China, that’s rare now, because China’s advanced to the point where they have people they train. Some people have been trained in the West, and when they come back, and they can do this, they don’t need us,’ Mr Harper says. ‘And the Chineseforeigner business relationship is changing as a result.’ ‘Chinese businesses now have more bargaining power. They need to have the skilled person. You build up with your foreign talent, but then you train your local talent to take over, and that’s a good model. They’re doing this so they can move towards a more high-quality export economy, rather than a manufacturing economy,’ Mr Harper says. ‘And that’s happening, but it’s not happening as fast as they’d like, because

‘Every society has gone though it. America and Britain had all those things like pollution. Every society goes through these processes, and it does change how you do business.’ ‘What happened in China with manufacturing and all that, is now happening in Vietnam, and India, and Cambodia, and Laos—you’ll see them follow pretty much the same route that China followed, and eventually they’ll become more of an export economy as well,’ he says. The first wave, or flood, of foreign businesses into China began in the late twentieth century, and has continued ever since. ‘Back when Deng Xiaoping opened up China and declared “to get rich is glorious!” the ones who had international business experience were from the West. China was becoming more of a market economy, so they really wanted foreign talent, and they still do up to a point,’ Mr Harper says. ‘It’s really in many ways quite a privilege to be here. I came later in life, with some skills and experience behind me already, and I was able to use some of that here.’ Mr Harper says he has formed very close friendships in China from his many business interactions. ‘micMAC’s services ease the way between the two countries, and, I hope, between the cultures,’ he smiles, ‘And that helps everybody. So I’m happy about what we’re contributing, I really am!’

Julian’s garden contains a huge variety of plants, including grapes, lemon balm, arugula, a bay tree, basil, and rhubarb, which he bought on Taobao: “Many people don’t know that rhubarb comes from China, but it does.” How did you get interested in botany? I’ve liked plants all my life. My father worked in research, and because of this we had a huge garden in Spain. I have a much bigger garden than this in Madrid. A lot of these plants, like the bay tree, came from my garden there. The family home is full of antiques: Ming stone carvings, a marble fish bowl, a Hindu stone head from Indonesia, an Italian electric fan from 1924. “I [Julian] like antiques. I have many from Indonesia, from the six years I lived there.”

"Qingdao is a surprising place because it’s so much bigger than people think. They don’t know how big Qingdao is. There are 30 kilometres of houses, non-stop, from here to Chenyang. The bridge over to Huangdao is the longest bridge over the sea in the world. It’s 43 kilometres long." Xiaohei and Ming have puppies all over Qingdao. When people see the father on the street, they say, oh, this is Ming! He is famous. He had a benign tumour once, a big lump..but of course Bei is a surgeon. She operated on him and took it out, on the floor just there.

Julian’s chocolate factory is a smallscale venture, but an expert one. “Chocolate making is a Spanish tradition, as originally cocoa beans came from South America in the colonial era. Most chocolate companies do not make their chocolate paste, but buy it from someone else, then melt it and mould it, and add nuts or similar if necessary. We produce our own chocolate paste with our own recipes.” The chocolate is special because it has no sugar added, only a natural sweetener; that means it’s low calorie, and suitable for diabetics. “We make 88% dark chocolate, and it’s the best you will ever taste. Here, smell it. Doesn’t it smell beautiful? This one is freshmade, last Friday.”

Tian Bei shows me around the kitchen, where scores of bottles of sherry line the cupboards. They laugh at how impressed I am with their collection. “She’s English,” Julian says. “They love alcohol. Of course she’s an expert.”

Tian Bei and Julian Zulueta have been in Qingdao for many years, in a house surrounded by all kinds of plants (botany is one of Julian’s many hobbies). Tian Bei is an internationally renowned surgeon, having accumulated 10 years of experience in medical surgery before switching to plastic surgery, which she has specialised in for over 20 years; Julian is by trade a civil engineer, but has recently switched to the rather more eclectic occupation of running a chocolate factory right here in Qingdao. Julian has one son, living and working in Shanghai (also named Julian as is customary in Spanish culture), while Tian Bei has a son living in Qingdao. They also have two very lively and friendly dogs, Xiaohei and Ming.

ur Hot Mum this issue is Sandra Govoni, a young and very beautiful Mama from Poland. She came to DONG Hairdressing today with her husband John and son Nathan, who enjoyed making a book about thunderstorms while his mum was in the hairdresser’s chair. The family have lived all over the world, in places as exotic as Brazil, Chile, Bulgaria and Italy, where John is from; Nathan has a foot in more cultures than most, speaking Polish, English and Italian fluently, as well as learning Chinese at school. Sandra is expecting a new baby girl on the 15th of December.

Today at DONG Hairdressing, stylist Eric is evidently excited to be given free rein with Sandra’s waist-length hair. Having had a specialist dye done in Italy several months ago, Sandra won’t have her hair dyed today; instead, she receives a loving wash, massage, cut, blow dry and style. Sandra sighs happily as she settles down into the hairdressing chair. “I really care about my hair… I put oils in it too from time to time, to keep it smooth. Healthy hair is so important.” Sandra loosens her plaited hair, and the process starts with a long, leisurely hair wash in one of DONG’s immaculately clean basins. Sandra leans back in one of DONG's soft leather reclining chairs, and tells REDSTAR about her life in Qingdao and family.

more everyday hairstyle. Eric agrees; and proceeds with a slightly less extravagant French braid down the back of Sandra’s head, with hair artistically twisted into a symmetrical, woven ponytail. Nathan comes over to show his mum the book he has been making about thunderstorms. Lightning, apparently, has killed 126 people in the United States; and thunder makes life hard for many people. Sandra applies her own light makeup for the final shoot. Dark pencil gives her eyes a beautiful frame for our final ‘after’ photograph, and once the photography is finished, it’s time to pack up and go for lunch!

What brings your family to Qingdao? My husband works with a company that builds power plants. [John] The plants are so big that they have to be made in pieces, then the pieces are shipped on huge cargo ships. These ones are going to Russia. It’s too cold in Russia to manufacture them, minus forty or fifty degrees. So we make them nearby, in Huangdao, where the port is. [Sandra] So we really don’t know how long we’ll be here. It depends on the company and the next contract. How did you and your husband meet? [She laughs.] We met in a bar. He wasn’t exactly my type at first, because he had this really long hair…Eventually, he cut it! He looks a lot better now. The hairdresser spends a long time rubbing smoothing oils into Sandra’s long hair, and then she moves from the basin area to the blow drying chair, where her long blonde locks are dried.

Do you miss anywhere that you have lived? Oh, Brazil. It was so beautiful there. [John] There was 30 kilometres of perfect beach, just around the corner from our house. It was absolutely incredible. When the blow dry is complete, it’s time for curling.

What kind of work do you do? I myself am a visual merchandiser. I design the interiors of shops, the decor, the layout, to maximise sales and make sure everything is displayed properly. It’s a complex job. I’m not working right now; since we move around with my husband’s work and projects, I mostly do freelance. It works.

[Sandra] These curls will be gone in one hour! They never stay, however much I want them to. I don’t know if my hair is too heavy, or what. But they look nice, while they last. After a long brushing session, the head stylist, Eric, begins a complex hairstyle suited to the catwalk, with hair piled on top of Sandra’s head. A few photos are done with this, and then we ask for a

ARE YOU READY FOR LABOUR?

PART II: Relaxation Preparation

Last issue’s article discussed the importance of preparing our mind and body for the marathon equivalent intensity of labor. This month, we are looking at techniques to help your mind cope with the intensity of contractions throughout the length of labor. Once again, practicing these techniques in the weeks or months leading up to delivery will help you apply them under pressure. You can’t prepare for a marathon in a day!

The Importance of Relaxation Techniques As your labor progresses, contractions grow more and more intense and can seem to take control over your entire body. It takes a lot of practice to be able to relax your body while your uterus is working hard to push the baby out, but if your body tenses against the contraction, it is fighting the natural birth process. Imagine one force is squeezing and pressing the baby down while the other is tensing and pulling the baby back up. Being able to relax your body separately from the contraction relieves pain and allows your uterus to prepare the baby’s position for delivery. TECHNIQUE 1: Find a comfortable position, preferably lying on your left side. Starting with your face, consciously relax your body one part at a time. Think about your eyebrows, your mouth, your neck, your shoulders…on down until you reach your toes. Once there, think about your head again. Are those first parts still relaxed? If not, begin again.

36

myredstar.com

Repeat until you feel completely relaxed. This is a great activity to do before bed as it will help you get a good night’s sleep. TECHNIQUE 2: This practice involves your birthing partner. When you are in a deep sleep, have them observe you when completely relaxed. What position are you in? What does your

face look like? Where do your hands lie? Then, the next time you are practicing Technique 1, have them help you. As they observe your position, they can note which parts of your body do not look relaxed. Have them gently tap the part that seem tense, reminding you to relax that area. When you are in labour they can repeat this technique, perhaps even massaging and

广告 • 青岛家庭

helping the tense areas to relax. TECHNIQUE 3: After you have practiced Techniques 1 and 2, practice now with a timer and an ice cube. After finding your relaxed position, have your birthing partner place an ice cube into your palm for 30 seconds. Practice relaxing every part of your body in spite of the discomfort of the cold. After 30 seconds, your birthing partner can remove the ice cube for two minutes. Feel free to move around and find a new position during this time. Take hold of the ice again for 30 seconds. Repeat this 4-5 times, perhaps lengthening the time with ice to 45-60 seconds. This practice simulates the discomfort of contractions and helps you to consciously relax. Practice this activity in different positions to find which ones allow you to relax best. TECHNIQUE 4: Do you cope internally or externally? Some people cope with pain and discomfort externally, such as crying out, moaning, humming, singing, etc. Others prefer

internal methods, such as meditation, dim lights, and quiet surroundings. Practice Technique 3 in varying environments, such as loud/soft music, bright/dim lights, television off/on. Do you prefer your partner to massage you during contractions, or not touch at all? If you prefer touch, where and how? Keep a journal about things you like or don’t like, and try to communicate this to your birthing team. TECHNIQUE 5: Research labor/birthing positions online and PRACTICE them in the weeks leading up to birth. Some positions that look simple in pictures are more complicated than you might think with a large belly disrupting your balance. With your partner, pay attention to how they should support you, the placement of your feet, what feels good and what you don’t like. Having practiced these ahead of time will make you more comfortable trying them in labor. Changing positions and staying active in labor will help your baby move into an optimal position for delivery.

// QINGDAO FAMILY /

These relaxation techniques are mostly gleaned from my reading of Husband Coached Childbirth (The Bradley Method) and from my training as a doula. For more information and additional relaxation techniques, I recommend reading The Birth Partner, by Penny Simkin, or similar books on childbirth. Remember, reading is only the start. Make sure you actually practice the different techniques in the months leading up to your due date to better prepare your mind and body.

WHAT DO FESTIVALS REALLY MEAN? CHRISTMAS IS COMING! We had a lot of festivals in 2016, but what do you really know about their meanings and origins?

38

myredstar.com

广告 • 青岛家庭

‘Festivals’ have their earliest roots in ceremonies that occurred in ancient times. During those times, people might celebrate by hunting an boar; nowadays, festivals give our lives more colour, and with this comes more expectation towards them. As Fox said in The Little Prince: “It is

James: I have been living in China for about 20 years! It was an imagined land for me, before I arrived. I heard about its huge population, the Great Wall, martial arts movies and so on, and they all attracted me a lot. I´ve celebrated a lot of festivals in China, actually finding a deeper sense of identity I felt in Western countries. Most Western festivals are related to religion. Though the Chinese have few religious beliefs, more and more Chinese people are beginning to celebrate Western festivals, though most of these have business nuance. In England, you couldn’t imagine shopping malls being open during a festival! Festivals really just mean being happy.

After listening to so many stories, we were very touched. Listening to other people’s stories is one of the best ways to learn more about the world. In light of this, just before Christmas, Super Family Calendar has prepared an event for you, encouraging 20 families (Chinese and foreign) to get together and make ginger

to make one day different from the other days, and one moment different from the other moments.” In the global village, we have a lot of opportunities to experience different cultures with different people in different places.

Chris: I’m Chinese and have lived in Australia for 4 years. I loved the easy pace of life and relaxed environment there. However, I missed China very much, especially the food my mom cooked when I went back to China for festivals. Early this year, we had a baby and my mom came to Australia to help. When I ate my mom’s homecooked dumplings, I suddenly realized that this was my real home. China has an old saying: when your parents are around, don’t travel far. Even now I’m far from my parents, with festivals, I can connect my past with my present. I wish happiness for everyone in festival times, and hope that all can get together with their families.

cookies, read Christmas books, and most importantly share gifts with new friends and tell your Christmas stories. How to take part: Please scan the QR code and follow us! The activity will soon be announced in the account.

Today, we´ve interviewed several foreign friends who have lived in China for several years, and several Chinese friends who have already lived in a foreign country for several years, about what they understand as the meaning of festival.

Michael: I lived in China for 5 years with my wife and kids. Despite the fact that there are so, so many people, and the beer can’t compare with Germany, we were happy there. My kids loved Chinese festivals, especially because most festivals are deeply related to food: zongzi for the Dragon Boat Festival and mooncakes for Mid-Autumn. Now they’re addicted to Chinese culture. For me, festivals mean being in company and the happiness of families.

ALWAYS: A EUROPEAN BEER HOUSE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY

Marina City has a new hotspot for foreigners missing the taste and atmosphere of Europe’s pubs and bars! Always Beer Garden is a beautifully warm, German-style enclave of soft chairs, rustic wooden furniture and, of course, exceptional beer. Nestled under The Diner at the harbour end of Marina City, glowing from the inside out with Christmas-market-like lights, Always is surely one of the best places to warm your hands and fill your stomach as winter closes in on Qingdao. The food, atmosphere, and friendly staff are reason enough to frequent Always, but the real jewel in their crown stands behind the wooden bar: a proud, colourful, and lovingly cultivated collection of beers from around Europe, featured as REDSTAR’s Drink of the Month in November. Multicoloured empty beer bottles singing of good times past line the wood-panelled walls, assuring you that you’re in a place that knows its beer, and certainly knows how to have a good time. Here you can find such critically acclaimed names as witbierstyle Delirium Tremens, lambic fruit beer Pêcheresse, draft Budějovický Budvar from the Czech Republic, and lager Keizerrijk Van Bree (KVB), to name a few. Get an icecold bottle from their large refrigerators, or settle down and take your time with an enormous, Oktoberfest-style litre of draft (recommended!).

satisfying Western fare; groups should try the large pork joint, served nicely on a wooden chopping board, which is soft to a knife’s touch and oozing with flavour. The cheese-stuffed baked potatoes melt in your mouth, and are the perfect guilty pleasure to complement that big, golden beer after a long day. The pizzas here also come highly recommended, with just the right amount of cheese, good vegetarian options, and sizes suitable for kids. Salads with a zingy dressing and lettuce with a real crunch of freshness (not so easy to find in Qingdao!) are also on the menu; and a surprising amount of thought has gone into creating a selection of gorgeously presented fruit juices, sodas and mocktails. Always also have a live music stage and several large sports TVs; head to a table upstairs for a commanding view. Always is perfect for an indulgent and unrushed evening meal; sinking into their soft chairs around one of the warm, thick wooden tables is reminiscent of being in the cosy interior of a Swiss ski chalet, or a quiet Bierhalle in the last days of Oktoberfest.

Soft lights and melodious, low background music ensure an ambience that feels a world away from the uproar of Qingdao’s busy roads. As the weather gets colder, at Always you can always find the warmth of German beer and meat, not to mention the many year’s end sports events, business meetings, and gatherings that they host. There are definitely worse places you could find yourself in on cold Northern China nights. Address: Always Beer Garden, Marina City 百丽广场西区 奥维斯啤酒花园

Shang Qiao Shui Chan is a big and bold new heavy hitter in town. The bar, restaurant and live music venue covers an enormous space in a fantastic location, just a five-minute walk from MixC mall, and the inside is absolutely brimming with treasures. As its name (“Shangqiao Fruits of the Water”) suggests, the restaurant focuses on seafood, and the first thing you notice as you walk through the attractive automatic doors is their collection of live seafood, bubbling happily in tanks lit with purple lights. The interior of the restaurant is enormous but not at all cavernous; it’s clean, warm and full of energy. Upstairs also houses a juice bar, and downstairs the large bar area is reminiscent of a newly built ship, with shiny brass bar fittings and wooden and silver screw-dotted chairs, and a tour de force water display that lights up in different colours and spells out words in mesmerising detail. The fountain, which seems to defy the laws of

physics by falling neatly from the ceiling to a trough behind the bar, also acts as the curtain for the live band stage that overlooks the entire restaurant. Shang Qiao Shui Chan have their own band every Friday and Saturday, and will host REDSTAR’s Unplugged Open Mic event on Wednesday 7 December. The bar has some of the cheapest good-quality cocktails in the city (25RMB!), as well as 280RMB bottles of tequila (which works out at just over 9RMB a shot). Along with their collection of rare types of Qingdao beer that can hardly be found anywhere in the city, they will also in the coming months brew several varieties of beer in house - which have already gained REDSTAR’s seal of approval. This is definitely a place to hit up with a big group of friends for a good time. Address 地址 : 1 Xiangzhou Lu 香洲路 1 号(五四 广场西)Phone 电话 : 5577-5555 5577-6666

Vegetarian Taster Menu in a Stunning Setting at Tian Dan Xu As if the discovery of 1907 (see our Spotlight section) were not enough, this month has revealed a second showstopper of a restaurant in Qingdao. Perched on the corner of the InterContinental, glowing from the inside out through floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Tian Dan Xu is an exquisite restaurant that serves a multi-course taster menu of vegetarian and vegan food, brimming with delicate flavour and sparkling creativity. The food is brilliant enough in itself, with inventive uses of taro, noodles, mushrooms, turnip, glutinous rice, red bean, and many, many more. But what sets Tian Dan Xu apart is the breathtaking attention to detail (rare mushrooms are flown in from Yunnan, just to give a particular flavour to the starter soup) and genuine passion for creating a relaxing, respectful and, simply put, beautiful dining environment. Graceful wooden tables are adorned with living plants and artistic wooden structures (our table’s plant drooped under the weight of round, ripe lemons) and the understated crockery turns out to be handHai Qing Hotel (hǎi qíng dà jiǔ diàn) 11 Donghai Zhong Lu (8596-9888) 海情大酒店 东 海中路11号

Owner Dazui explains that Tian Dan Xu’s philosophy is one of simplicity, tranquility, and harmony with your surroundings. The set taster menu changes every 15 days, according to the traditional Chinese calendar; all fine wines in house are chosen to compliment the menu’s delicate flavours. You can easily spend three hours here, taking your time to enjoy each course, the fine wine, and constantly flowing sweet rose tea. What a heartwarming addition to, and perhaps welcome break from, the loud and lively Qingdao restaurant scene. You can’t miss this place if you live in Qingdao. Our local friend invited me and my family to a Shanghai food restaurant. I would never find it by myself. It’s very hidden in Qingdao Fuxin Hotel on the second floor. The restaurant is nice, clean and stylish. But the best is the food! We ordered maybe 10 different dishes and everything was extraordinary. They serve amazing fresh food which varies from noodles, vegetables to fish or sea food... in price range from 16 to 80 kuai. To my surprise waiters were very friendly and it wasn’t noisy. You really do feel the 4-star hotel atmosphere! My sons, who normally drive me crazy when I make them food at home, ate everything, and we took what was left away with us! I’m guessing the place is famous in Qingdao because if you are few people it’s difficult to get a place immediately; it’s definitely worth the wait though.

I went recently to the new branch, on the 5th floor of Mixc Mall. I went with my parents who are visiting from London, so I think they had a very different opinion to the price to me! Isari is expensive for Qingdao, but the sushi here is really good, especially the large combo plates of different rolls. The miso soup is perfectly made and the salmon sashimi is the high-quality kind that melts in your mouth. You can watch some of the chefs in matching uniforms of red and white preparing food behind a counter near the door, and because the restaurant isn’t too big the service is good too. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for some highquality sashimi!

The great variety of dishes and colours here allows you to do a sort of culinary tour of Thailand! Every dish is accurately prepared so you can experience real Thai flavours. Especially the pineapple rice and the taimei are delicacies in this restaurant. No matter whether you are an expert or just trying Thai food for the first time you won’t regret choosing the Taimei restaurant.

The district now has a direct link to Qingdao's old town - the Jiaozhouwan tunnel has cut journey times to around 20 minutes and more or less put the old ferry terminal out of business. Jiaonan, to the north, is linked to the eastern municipality by the longest bridge in the world (41.58km, completed in June 2011).
