Body piercings tend to get mixed reviews in China. While body piercing dates back more than 5,000 years and is quite popular in the West, traditional Buddhist and Confucian teachings promote respect for the body and often classify body modification as a form of punishment. However, due to recent celebrity endorsement and rising popularity on Chinese social media, body piercing is emerging as a new trend amongst Chinese youth.

Despite having no body modifications himself due to parental pressure and fear of addiction if he started, Mr. Yan details common piercing locations with extensive knowledge while forthrightly stating he does not pierce tricky cartilage areas. Although he doesn’t speak English, Yan has had many foreign clients before and welcomes friends from all over the world to his studio. At just 10RMB for one earlobe and up to 300RMB for more unusual spots, Mr Yan’s is the perfect place to get a new piercing. Georgia Leach

Guo 15, Student, China Green tea stuffing is quite odd. It’s very sweet, rather than bitter. It tastes like the green tea drinks sold in 7-Eleven.

What is the weirdest mooncake stuffing you’ve ever tried? Mid-Autumn Festival is just around the corner, which means there will soon be a whole range of mooncakes to satisfy your taste buds. Whilst there are many delicious ones, what bizarre mooncake fillings have you tried? Shenglin Wang and Parvez Minhas find out.

The weirdest stuffing I have ever tried is Wu Ren. Yolk mooncakes taste good, but they sound strange! Flower stuffing also sounds weird. I like the sweeter, more traditional mooncakes.

Wu Ren mooncakes. The combination of five nuts makes it taste quite odd. I prefer sweeter mooncakes, especially bean paste ones.

Many people don’t like Wu Ren (5 nuts) mooncakes, but I think that they are fine. I’m not really a fan of mooncakes, but I would say that yolk stuffing is the best choice!

I have tried 10 mooncakes since I’ve been in China, but I never ask what flavour they are—I just eat them! If I like it, I carry on eating… if I don’t, I just leave it!

I like yolk mooncakes, as I don’t like mooncakes that are too sweet. I like the mooncake pastry, especially those made by Hong Kong brand MeiXin.

22, Student, China

At first I thought that yolk and shredded coconut were very strange, but they don’t taste bad. I like sweet stuffing, but not too greasy. The thickness of the mooncake’s pastry can make quite a difference. I usually eat mooncakes made by friends and family.

We tried our first mooncake at our local supermarket. We split it into four pieces because we were so curious about how it would taste! We don’t know what type of mooncake it was because we just bought it randomly, but it was very dense, crumbly and a little salty.

AUTUMN AROMAS 秋“香”四溢 Rose Michael and Jasper Zhai explore two distinctly different ways of incorporating fragrance and aroma into everyday life.

A

s tiny glass bottles filled with fragrant oil invade the shelves of Qingdao’s boutiques, it seems that the essential oils craze, growing ever more popular in the Western world, has also hit China. Although several of these undiluted oils have a particularly intoxicating aroma—the wild orange oil provides the perfect, fresh burst of scent— their benefits appear to go far beyond making your room smell nice. Whilst aromatherapy oils tend to be diluted, these pure oils extracted from flowers, seeds, roots and other parts of plants are said to have healing properties. Boasting the ability to increase your energy levels, help you drift off to sleep or even lose a few kilos, these seemingly magical oils claim to enhance physical and emotional wellbeing.

Often stylishly designed and encased in minimalistic packaging, it’s easy to assume that essential oils are a recent phenomenon. On the contrary, this natural form of healing incorporates over three thousand years of history across numerous regions from the Middle East to Europe. Despite these ancient origins, essential oils are becoming more and more integrated into modern life. Do you suffer from neck pain after a day sat stooped over your laptop in the office? Wintergreen essential oil—with soothing, pain-relief qualities and a gentle sensation of heat when applied to the skin—may just do the trick. From applying basil oil to relieve an ear infection to diffusing the scent of lavender from your car’s cigarette lighter, ancient concepts are being used to alleviate the ailments of modern living.

Yet with over three thousand essential oils to choose from and countless blends, joining the essential oil fan club is a daunting task. Perhaps the best place to start is with one of the basics: add a few drops of lemon oil to your glass of water to boost your metabolism (and enjoy a refreshing drink), use it as part of your skincare regime to get a clearer complexion or even diffuse it around your house for a natural mood boost! If you were to own only one essential oil, peppermint—a natural breath-freshener and energiser— is the male essential, according to DoTerra’s representative Jin. Women, on the other hand, should not be without Whisper, a musky, aromatic blend of oils including ylang ylang, vanilla bean and rose flower, the fragrance of which changes based on the temperature of your body. myredstar.com

/ CITY // 广告 • 城市 expensive! Once collected, the resin is formed into the classic stick shape, usually by crumbling and gluing the incense together. Alternatively, joss sticks can be created via a more natural process, by using a natural, glue-like substance produced from deep-sea shellfish, a method prized by Qingdao’s very own incense studio, Fragrance Hall of Five Elements.

As we indulge in the enticing fragrances of essential oils, it becomes easy for elements of traditional Chinese culture to be eclipsed by international trends. Despite millennia of history on Chinese soil, it appears that incense sessions are fast losing their place in Chinese culture, as younger generations lose touch with this traditional practice believed to date back three thousand years. Anyone can recognise a joss stick but understanding the traditional incense session is increasingly uncommon, even in China. Despite its rather unglamorous beginning as an ancient air-freshener, the use of incense gradually transformed into the more distinguished ‘incense session’ by the Northern Song period. By burning—or rather smouldering—incense in a censer, China’s elite hoped to reach a tranquil state, where they could tap into their intellectual abilities and enjoy the nonmaterial aspects of life to the fullest. After smouldering the incense, made from resin collected from trees, China’s literati often used their newfound clarity to write poetry,

create calligraphic works or share ideas with likeminded people, making it a unique cultural activity. Although there are several different types of incense, one is particularly sought after: eaglewood incense. Said to be so special that Song Dynasty Chancellor Ding Wei refused anything but water boiled with this incense during the fortnight leading up to his death, it even comes with its own catchphrase: you need three lives just to find one piece. With only certain trees producing the resin necessary for incense and a whole range of resin varieties, the difficulties of incense production appear to arise before you’ve even begun. The highest quality incense escapes the tree naturally; no man-made hole can rival those created by ants, birds or a bolt of lightning. Add to the mix the fact that for a tree to produce eaglewood incense there needs to be a certain parasitic mould where the resin seeps out, it’s unsurprising that this variety is particularly rare and, consequently, very

Creating a natural product is fundamental to Fragrance Hall of Five Elements’ philosophy, but their work also demonstrates that the incense session is not just for the literati of the Ming period. An incense travel kit with a lighter chargeable by USB transports this ancient practice straight into the twenty-first century, whilst their stylish, modern designs attract younger generations to continue the tradition. Founded in 2011, this producer of quality incense and advocate of traditional Chinese culture specialises in the high-density chenxiang variety, meaning ‘sinking’ due to the fact that it does not float in water. Whilst the spicy fragrance of Gold is most suited to autumn and is linked to lung health, Fire, which also incorporates Indonesian influences, can aid sleep during the summertime. Appreciate the slightly sweet aroma of Long Summer all year round, or use Wood during spring, the season of new life, to encourage internal growth. Drawing heavily on the traditional concept of wuxing—the five elements—the work of Fragrance Hall of Five Elements is the perfect example of how the incense session can evolve and mould to fit our everyday modern lives. If the evolution of incense from an early air-freshener to a meditative aid teaches us one thing in particular, it’s that cultural change is inevitable, but it would be disastrous for such a rich cultural element to gradually fade away. Whilst embracing international culture, China’s own cultural heritage can also be preserved, as we adapt the ancient technique of aromatherapy to suit our hectic, modern lives.

CHINA TARGETED AT RIO OLYMPICS? 中国在里约不受待见? Was China treated unfairly at the Olympic Games or did Chinese netizens overreact to every perceived slight? Jordan Eckenrode weighs in.

T

he Rio 2016 Olympics have left us with many memorable moments including gems like Fu Yuanhui’s funny faces and “prehistoric power”, He Zi’s marriage proposal, and athletes from all over the world rocking the signature purple bruises of Chinese cupping. From these stories we know that the Olympics are not just about the best competing against one another on the world stage, but more importantly they’re about the human interest stories that come out of the Games.

The real reason we are drawn to the Olympics is because the games are about the triumph of the human spirit. However, there is a darker story coming out of Rio: Many people in China feel that some of their country’s athletes have been robbed of medals, that judges were inept, or worse—had been paid-off. Claims that the Olympics are unfair are not new. Corruption at the Olympics has an ugly history that dates back to ancient Greece when politicians would control the outcomes of the competition. More recently,

It doesn’t matter how much you accuse judges of bad decisions, it is up to the athlete to come back next time and do better.

social critics have argued that the media puts female Olympians on the back-burner, and Russian athletes have complained of bias related to the performance-enhancing drug scandal implicating their countrymen. So was China the most recent victim of such corruption and discrimination? Groanings of partiality began when Internet users in China noticed that the smaller stars on the Chinese flag were not aligned correctly (despite the flag being made in China and approved by China’s National Olympic Committee). Later, complaints continued when the Chinese flag was placed below other flags when China was tied for a medal. The biggest hoopla on Weibo came after Australia’s Mack Horton accused Sun Yang of taking banned substances. Although Sun did indeed test positive for a banned substance in 2014, angry netizens reacted by denouncing Australia and demanding

an apology. Horton’s words did not reflect the nuances of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s constantly changing policies or the fact that drugs can take time to leave the body but neither was he stating something untrue, despite his indelicateness. Later, Horton conceded that he called Sun Yang a “drug cheat” mainly to get into Sun’s head, so was this a case of anti-China bias, anti-doping bias, or just cutthroat competitiveness? Later in the games, a re-run by the United States in the 4x100 women's relay race pushed China out of the chance to run in the finals. The American team was allowed a re-run because the US team dropped the relay stick due to a bump by the Brazilian team. At first, China wanted to dispute the decision claiming it was unfair, but later they accepted the decision by the Association of Athletics Federation. In another case of so-called prejudice, women's

weightlifter Li Yajun was disqualified for failing to lift 126kg, after she already successfully lifted 123kg, enough to win the gold medal. Li thought her first lift was recorded and was enough to get her gold, but she wanted to push herself and attempted 126kg. She said if she had known the judges would count the attempt she wouldn't have tried it. Li could chalk it up to a miscommunication, but shouldn’t anyone who competes at Olympic level know the rules of his or her sport? In another incident, gymnast Shang Chunsong gave what many thought was a nearly flawless performance on the balance beam, only to get outpointed by an American who stumbled on her landing. While surely this was a questionable call, in the most blatant case of a bad ruling, Lu Bin of China lost to a Kenyan fighter in the light flyweight competition. When the winner of the fight was announced, Lu Bin raised his hand in victory just to find out that his Olympic dreams had been smashed. He later took to Weibo stating that “the judge has stolen my dream”. Outside observers agree Lu Bin was robbed of gold, but this isn’t the first time in history a boxer has received a bad call. Both Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Roy Jones Jr. have been infamously cheated in the Olympics and now both are shoe-ins for the Boxing Hall of Fame. So did Lu suffer from anti-

// FEATURES /

China bias or just bad luck? Either way, now it’s up to Lu Bin to decide if he wants to add his name among the greats and come back to win a World Championship or wallow in his Olympic defeat. That is really the take away from this article: iit doesn’t matter how much you accuse judges of bad decisions, it is up to the athlete to come back next time and do better. That being said, I feel bad for the people who have been robbed of an opportunity to win a medal. The Olympic Games should be an event where the playing field is completely fair, but judges are humans and humans err. We as viewers should be hyper aware, as the Chinese netizens are, and be vigilant of bias or any form of discrimination in sports. China playing the victim card doesn't help anyone, though, especially not the Olympians who came up short a medal. Moreover, discrediting judges just because you are not satisfied with the result is flat out unsportsmanlike. It's hard to claim Olympic judges have been oppressing Chinese players, since China has ranked in the top three medal winning countries in the last few decades. We as viewers should focus on the victories, the triumphs, and the success stories of the Olympics and not get hung up on defeat.

As a shoe lover who can never have enough high-heels, Christina Cao totally understood the disappointment of her expat friends when they searched for shoes in their size on Taobao and drag-queen shoes popped up. It occurred to her that shoes are not the only problem for expats in need of some plus-sized items for their wardrobe, so she did some research and here is her list of places to shop.

So if you’re newly plus-size, head over to the second floor of Zhenhua Korean Fashion Town. The women’s shoes at Min Xie Dian range from size 35 to 39, but for popular ones the sizes extend to 41. Prices vary from 100 to 700RMB; you can ask for a discount, but do not expect a serious reduction. Add their WeChat to look through their catalogue and check out their new arrivals. XXXL Trousers and Shirts Just as shopping for women's shoes is annoying, tall men also find shopping for trousers a painful experience. On Waimaojie (“Exported Goods Street”) near the intersection of Nanjing Lu and Jiangxi Lu, there’s a shop called Henghao Clothing ( 恒豪服饰 ) specialising in extra large/long men’s clothing. Not only do they sell jeans, but they also have trousers for any occasion in a comprehensive size range, from 23 to 48 (sometimes even 50) based on waist size. They have a variety of tops to choose from as well. From polo shirts to checked shirts, you can easily find something to match your new trousers. Military-style Outfits For those who fancy real police uniforms or pilot jackets, the 5.11 Solider Shop ( 兵站 5.11 ) is definitely the best place to shop. Most of the items are from US brand 5.11 (American police uniforms and outerwear), COCKPIT/Randolph (American Air Force pilot jackets) and USN (Navy uniforms). Sizes range from 30 to 36 length and 28 to 42 waist. Their clothes are tough and look bad-ass! In addition to trousers, jackets, army-approved patterned T-shirts, bags and shoes, they also have a huge selection of accessories and smaller items such as watches, aviator sunglasses, gloves, badges, zippo lighters and even military-style iPhone cases. Through a Photojournalist’s Lens 镜头下的青岛 From squat toilets to t-shirts with Chinglish, first-timers in China take pictures of just about everything they see. Deciding what to photograph in a country as vibrant as China can prove to be just as difficult as using the right optical setting. Photojournalism graduate Sarah Reeve documented the wonders of China as well as scenes of everyday life during her two month stay in Qingdao. Here she explains what she tries to capture when she looks through her lens.

When most people take a photograph, they simply press the shutter because they find the subject aesthetically pleasing. For a photographer, and in particular a photojournalist, this task is sometimes harder than it appears. As a photojournalist I like to capture stories with my camera, the unusual and interesting—the almost unseen. When travelling in a new place, being selective is difficult because everything is exciting and novel. In Qingdao, I often found myself capturing images like a tourist, not an image maker. However, I have come to accept that this is not necessarily a bad thing. I photograph with a different eye than the typical tourist

because I aim to understand the people and the world around me through my camera, in addition to creating a beautiful image. While documenting my experiences in China, I came to realise that I have a newfound confidence when approaching people and asking to take their photograph. Asking a stranger to take their photo can prove difficult at the best of times, let alone when there is a language barrier. Sometimes—regardless of the outcome of the photo—I am just pleased I had the confidence to press the shutter and produce a photo of an otherwise lost moment.

Zhanqiao Pier in Qingdao Bay is especially enjoyable if you visit in the morning before the throngs of tourists arrive.

One Shoe, Two Countries 飞跃

Challis Cates explores the ity and cultural ident iyue the cult of Fe sneakers.

W

iping a generous salty film of perspiration from my wrinkled brow as sweat warped the passport resting in my breast pocket, curling its cover at the corners as if recoiling in protest of the Shanghai heat, my bleary eyes, bloodshot with jet-lag and a two-day hangover, ran feverish laps across the adjacent wall, diligently scanning left and right against the cacophonous array of Feiyue sneakers which monopolised all but an attenuated gangplank of linoleum running the length of the humble shop, and even spilling haphazardly into a rare

20

reserve of walking space as customers awkwardly brushed past one another, shoes in hand, towards the old ayi running sales in the far back corner. Out and about on a 9-hour layover, I’d taken the Maglev into the city from Pudong Airport for a cheeky pint at Boxing Cat, a breezy stroll along the brick-laden alleys of the former French Concession, and, of course, a stop at CULTURE MATTERS, a hole-inthe-wall boutique shop opened in 2006 by city native Tian Bo dealing in all things

Feiyue. Located just a few dozen meters west of Shanghai Brewery down Dongping Road, Tian’s store, a long-standing favourite of hipster laowai, now caters overwhelmingly to Chinese urban youth and looks to pay homage not only to Feiyues as an important part of Shanghai and Chinese cultural history, but also as perhaps the country’s first major breakout success in the global fashion world.

Feiyue shoes have remained a staple of Chinese twentieth century attire since first emerging in Shanghai in the 1920s, a time when the city’s decadence rightfully merited its appellation as “Paris of the East”. Feiyues quickly won the devotion of martial artists who prized the firm grip of the sneaker’s deconstructed rubber sole and tough, malleable canvas which boasted unparalleled range of motion. Decades later Feiyues were reborn under Mao’s China as an inexpensive, utilitarian shoe for the masses, embodying socialist thrift and solidarity and worn by students, peasants and CCP officials alike. After peaking in the 1980s, with some 4 million pairs sold every year, Feiyue sneakers all but vanished from Chinese shelves. China’s opening up precipitated an economic miracle that fattened the pocketbooks of urban consumers eager to purchase newly available foreign brands like Nike and Adidas, whose marketing campaigns seized upon the acute anxieties of a country undergoing industrialisation on a historically unprecedented scale by promising status and a kind of “Western” cachet. Today the shoe’s brand recognition in its own country is so negligible that now the norm is for Western laowai to introduce Feiyue to their Chinese friends rather than the other way around. Originally Feiyues were produced exclusively in four basic styles – white or black, each sporting a nesting pair of deltas emblazoned across both sides and available in either a HI or LO cut. Each pair still comes unlaced and packaged quaintly in a brown paper bag with a small, white certificate of authenticity bearing the manufacturer’s official seal in vermillion ink. Strolling into the shop moments earlier with complete confidence that I wanted the classic pair in white, my fizzling frontal lobe was zonked with bewilderment as it struggled to process the impressive gamut of sneakers now produced in an attempt to expand its consumer base beyond kungfu practitioners. Did I want all white? All white with yellow soles? All white with yellow soles and the logo in blue? No, no. Before even beginning to consider the colour scheme, my principle consumer choice had to be one far more political: should I buy the Chinese originals or the luxury French knockoff brand?

// FEATURES /

Co., the only remaining manufacturer authorised by Double Coin Holdings, the original brand rights holder, to produce the shoes, promised in an article with Global Times that the “French Feiyue brand will never enter the Chinese market” and that his company would sue for intellectual copyright infringement if Bastian’s company ever tried, observing that “French people think the boost in sales is down to their branding success, but I think foreign customers like the brand because it has a long history in China and is connected with Shaolin martial arts.” Nevertheless, select specialty shops still carry French Feiyues or, perhaps more likely, domestic knockoffs of what are essentially foreign knockoffs of the domestic original; China Daily reports that some 90 percent of the 1 million pairs sold in China every year are counterfeits. Ironically China’s most recognisable modern contribution to international fashion was introduced to the West not by domestic producers but rather French copycats. Shanghai based entrepreneur Patrice Bastian stumbled upon the shoes in a kungfu class in 2005 and registered the name in his native France the following year, producing wholesale knockoffs with almost no aesthetic alterations. Perhaps the defining quality of the original Feiyue’s appeal is an unapologetic utilitarianism favouring function over form. Turning a pair over in your hands one really appreciates the almost violent disregard for the kind of gaudy, superfluous design elements of more commercial brands – not even a token attempt is made to conceal the thick globs of epoxy which bind the ribbed, yellow soles to the white canvas uppers. Claiming to pay respect to the shoes’ rich Chinese tradition, Bastian instead stole the form and lost the function – overhauling the production line and adding copious layers of padding and thicker soles that render his shoe useless for anything but street-wear. Easily the biggest difference between the Chinese and French Feiyues, however, is the price point. In China they retail for as little as 30RMB, whereas in Europe and the United States a pair of Bastian’s Feiyues will run you between 70 and 125 USD. Chinese Feiyue manufacturers take a different point of view. Liu Qinglong, manager of Shanghai Shenglong Shoes

French Feiyues at once Orientalise the shoe’s Chinese past while divorcing it from that same cultural context. Buying a pair purportedly promises to satiate Western nostalgia for a Chinese past that takes considerable liberties in reimagining the country’s twentieth century socialist legacy as a panacea for the anxiety of our anaemically uninspired capitalist present – a kind of “socialist chic” (mahjongg and Mao suits without the Maoism). Meanwhile Bastian’s website is totally whitewashed and devoid of anything that would suggest Feiyue shoes have anything to do with China at all – a gaggle of all Caucasian models skip around Manhattan in overpriced, knockoff sneakers that might as well be from anywhere. Rather than honouring an important Chinese contribution to global culture, the French brand has merely written the latest chapter in the long story of Westerners appropriating Asian cultural artefacts without any respect for the culture. Don’t get me wrong, Feiyue shoes are cool, and I own several pairs of them, but Feiyues are cool because China is cool. If you’re in Shanghai, stop by CULTURE MATTERS and buy a pair, or if you’re in Beijing, you can get them at Natooke, a small shop located on Wudaoying Hutong. Or if you’re lazy, just order some off of Taobao. Please though, for the love of God, buy the real thing.

CROSSCURRENT REDSTAR’s resident movie critic Josh Martin reviews Yang Chao’s newest film Crosscurrent.

C

rosscurrent is the sort of artisanal film that rarely opens on Chinese screens. Writer/director Yang Chao spent more than a decade developing the project, then shot it on a generous schedule of seventy days, most of it aboard ships on the Yangtze. By doing so, Yang flouted innumerable old warnings against shooting on water; the quixotic nature of his undertaking is reinforced by the use of traditional 35mm, a format rare enough elsewhere and nearly extinct in China. If this sounds a bit like Werner Herzog trekking up the Amazon to shoot Aguirre, the Wrath of God... well, not quite. The Yangtze is one of the world’s busiest waterways, and the protagonist of Crosscurrent—Gao Chun, played by Lou Ye/Wang Xiaoshuai regular

22

myredstar.com

Qin Hao—is not an ambitious explorer but the captain of an unimpressive cargo ship. Hired to transport an unspecified but clearly illicit item, Gao discovers some poems and a hand-drawn map left behind by a former crew member. Gao retraces the route and repeatedly encounters An Lu (Xin Zhilei), a young woman who seems to age backwards as the ship approaches the river’s source in Tibet. Crosscurrent has some striking similarities with Kaili Blues, another recent Chinese arthouse release (reviewed in our June issue). In both films, the main characters follow more or less linear paths to their destinations; both involve mysterious women who may or may not be some kind of spirit; and both feature copious amounts

of poetry. But Crosscurrent is a much more ‘painterly’ film, with nothing like Kaili Blues’ spectacularly mobile 40-minute long take. The cinematography (by Taiwanese master Lee Ping-bin) is more exacting, often drenching the screen in inky blackness. And whereas Kaili Blues captured the rhythms of rural life, Crosscurrent operates on a more vast, nearly inhuman scale, in which ships and mountains are as important as the characters. By conventional storytelling standards, Crosscurrent is a dud. What little we learn of Gao’s backstory (he owes his position to his parents; he may bear some responsibility for his father’s death) has no real effect on anything else, and his relationship with An Lu never feels like more than a cryptic metaphor. But a landscape painting would never be criticised for poor storytelling, and as the film moves west it becomes more and more a monument—or a memorial— to landscapes on the brink of oblivion, and a holistic view of man and nature no less at risk. So the film doesn’t quite satisfy, but then, as the anonymous sailor’s downbeat poems continually emphasise, there’s not a whole lot to be satisfied about. The Yangtze is too complex, too historically fraught, and just too damn long to be summed up by a single film, but the hardest things to do are the ones most worth trying. Crosscurrent opens on 8 September.

DIY Henna

Tattoos 海娜纹身

For thousands of years, the people of ancient India and Egypt used henna, a form of temporary tattoo art, for weddings, religious ceremonies, and sometimes just for simple body adornment. Henna originates from a plant that grows in tropical climates of northern Australia, Africa, and southern Asia, but the popularity of henna tattoos is growing worldwide. A great choice for people who do not want to permanently alter their bodies, but fancy a temporary tattoo, Parvez Minhas shows you how to apply a henna tattoo at home.

Photo © Shenglin Wang, Parvez Minhas

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

You can get henna from online retailers, such as Taobao, or local shops that stock imported goods, particularly from India.

Henna stencils are very easy to use and most are self-adhesive. All you have to do is stick the stencil onto an area of oil-free, clean skin where you would like to have the tattoo. Carefully push the henna through the tube onto the exposed skin.

To achieve a nice, dark colour, mix sugar and lemon juice together in a small bowl. When your henna is completely dry, dip your fingers in the mixture and dab it onto your tattoo. This is a traditional Indian way of ensuring that the stain from the henna is dark. The sugar-lemon mix is sticky, though, so wrap some clingfilm over the part of skin where your henna is applied while it dries. Let the henna dry again, waiting for about 2 hours before washing it off. Finally, you will notice how the henna has stained your skin depending on the colour of henna you used.

*TIP: Purchase henna with stencils for beginners—using henna for the first time can be tricky, but if you have stencils it’s much easier.

*TIP: The longer you leave the henna on to dry, the darker the colour of the tattoo.

*TIP: Always have tissues available! Henna can get messy. myredstar.com

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan Moon Water 16-17 September // 7:30pm // Grand Theatre Critically acclaimed Moon Water is coming to Qingdao for two spectacular nights in September—a contemporary dance marvel not to be missed. Having been presented at festivals and venues all over the world, this eclectic mix of modern choreography set to a selection of J.S. Bach’s classical cello suites has received rave reviews since its premiere in 1998. The progressive choreographer Lin Hwai-min aims to encapsulate the Chinese metaphor shui yue or 'Moon Water' in this 70-minute performance, calling on the Buddhist proverb “Flowers in a mirror and moon on the water are both illusory” as well as the Tai Chi principle that “Energy flows as water, while the spirit shines as the moon.” This entirely black and white production highlights the battle between dream and true presence, between effort and effortlessness, and showcases yin and yang. With hanging mirrors and billowing costumes, Moon Water dissolves all worldly perceptions into an ethereal landscape, blurring the audience’s notion of reality by transporting them through an unforgettable journey. Offering a graceful backdrop for this remarkable work, Russian cellist Mischa Maisky will play selections of Six Suites for Solo Cello by J.S. Bach. With only two dates available, do not miss out on this rare opportunity to experience the striking and truly extraordinary Moon Water. Georgia Leach

FENG TANG: A BUDDHIST PLAYBOY 28

myredstar.com

广告 • 文化

// CULTURE /

Suki Li thought Feng Tang was simply an author of erotic fiction using gimmicks to sell books. But after sitting down with this controversial Chinese writer, she was surprised to find he is something more.

F

eng Tang has many identities. He was a gynaecology and obstetrics doctor, a former Global Managing Partner at McKinsey & Company, and the founding CEO of China Resources Medical Corporation. He is also a writer, poet and antiquities collector. His latest work, Not Dispersed By The Wind In The Universe (《在 宇宙间不易被风吹散》), published three months ago, is a collection of prose on different kinds of fine objects and antiquities. Feng says, “the core of the oriental aesthetic is the beauty of nature. You can hardly find any design in the greatest Chinese crafts; the craftsmen just try to get them back to their natural shape.” He added that “people need some spiritual moments. In Chinese culture, drinking tea, smelling incense, playing guqin, writing calligraphy and watering plants are activities that lead you to your inner peace. And they all need some kind of fine object.” As China is getting richer and people focus more on the spiritual side of life, there is a growing market for these fine objects and craftsmanship seems to be prevalent in China again. ‘Ingenuity’ thus became a popular word. What is Feng's view on this? “‘Ingenuity’ has become a cliché. Most of the things we see in China today are still very far from the standard of ingenuity.” Feng admits he is a very traditional person, preferring handwriting to typing and physical books to e-readers. “Many Japanese companies still need to test your handwriting during recruitment. If your

handwriting is beautiful, this shows that you have some kind of aesthetic ability. Moreover, your handwriting contains twenty years of your habits.” Feng added, “Books can be touched. Giving you a book, or sending you a link—they are different. I also like browsing bookshops. I think hanging around in bookshops helps to improve one's quality. Even if you just walk around for a short time looking at book covers, browsing the titles, it still helps a lot.” Feng translated Tagore's Stray Birds, and proudly announced that this is the best Chinese version ever made, even better than that of the famous poet and translator Zheng Zhenduo ( 郑振铎 ) who lived during the Republic of China. Many people have said that Feng is being too arrogant. “I said my translation is better than Zheng's, based on a very objective analysis. Zheng's version was published in the 1920s, during the foundation period of modern Chinese language. Zheng was only in his twenties when translating this book, Tagore wrote it in his fifties. He wasn't talking about puppy love, he talks about his understanding of life. I don't think we always need to deify the work of predecessors.” Since Feng previously published erotic fiction, many view him as a libertine. He responds to this with a sense of humour: “I admit that I have had a deep interest in women since a very young age. That's why I chose gynaecology and obstetrics as my

major. I also thought of changing this habit, but if I change, I cannot write anymore.” Feng's idiosyncratic nature divides readers into two groups: they either love him or hate him. Feng is untroubled by his critics: “Those who try hard to please everybody will easily get cancer,” he explains. Called narcissistic by netizens, Fang responds that whether he is narcissistic or not has nothing to do with other people. If they wish to think so, they trouble themselves unnecessarily. He added, “What is life? Life is time. How to spend your time is the most fundamental decision we all make. The most important things in life are to do what you like and spend time with whom you love. If I had to go to a desert island and I could only bring one thing, I would bring the Three Hundred Tang Poems, or if I could bring a lady who could recite this book, that would be even better." Feng not only gives people the impression that he is a ladies' man, but strangely enough also a Buddhist. Maybe that is because he is willing to face his desires and weaknesses directly. He possesses a kind of simplicity. In his book he writes: “We are not Buddha. We have happiness, anger, grief and joy. We are greedy. We love food, wine, women and gambling. We obstinately stick to a wrong course. But if we live more simply, and more simply, we will become closer to Buddha.”

ZHOUZHUANG WATER TOWN Cities like Shanghai naturally come to mind when you first think about China. With their colourful lights, powerful skyscrapers and crowds of people, nothing seems to be impossible in modern China. But first-time visitors often want to experience the more traditional aspects of Chinese culture. So if you’re looking to escape the bustling cities and find the China of old, Zhouzhuang begs to be explored. Isabelle Fallmann takes you to this famous water town.

lthough we were not that far away from the mega-metropolis that is Shanghai, stepping out of the bus when we arrived in Zhouzhuang felt like travelling back in time. Ancient Chinese buildings with traditional architectural elements welcomed us, especially with their charismatic and comical statues of lions and tigers. Walking down the main road, we then encountered an immense arch—the impressive entrance of the water town. Zhouzhuang consists of many waterways and fourteen ancient stone bridges, earning it the nickname ‘Venice of the East’. With a history spanning over nine hundred years, Zhouzhuang was an important trading area for the surrounding countryside over many centuries. As in Venice, there are still canals with gondoliers navigating their rickety boats from house to house through the water streets, singing as they go. Life in Zhouzhuang is a true escape from everyday stresses, a holiday from the bustling, big city nearby. People in this town are beyond relaxed, and the feeling is contagious. A day is well spent just strolling along the cobbled streets, meeting the

// TRAVEL /

friendly locals in their little shops—just a simple nihao is enough to bring out their welcoming smiles. Even on a sweltering summer day, walking the narrow streets of this water town is enjoyable. Traditional Chinese houses were built close together, so there is a lot of shade available. Along the winding alleys there are plenty of adorable souvenir shops with far more authentic and unique items than what you might find in inner city souvenir shops. When you’re done shopping, cruise with your own gondolier and appreciate what makes Zhouzhuang the so-called ‘Venice of the East’. The gentle sound of splashing water mixed with the melodies of Chinese songs sung by the gondoliers provide an idyllic backdrop for your tour. Tickets are available at the small wooden ticket booths: you can choose between a single ticket for 40RMB or rent the whole boat (seats 6 people) for 150RMB. This unforgettable experience allows you to journey under the town’s many bridges, and explore the heart of Zhouzhuang from a local’s point of view. The most famous bridges of Zhouzhuang are the Twin Bridges, Shide and Yong’an. Together forming the image of an ancient Chinese key, they are also known as the ‘Key Bridges’.

If you drift a bit further away from the main waterways, you will come across the ancient streets surrounded by picturesque buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Spread out across the whole town, most of the buildings have traditional courtyards, which are also worth a visit. For an amazing overview of Zhouzhuang, visit Quanfu Temple. Its renowned water tower is 33 metres high, and it is possible to climb the stairs up to the roof to get a breathtaking bird's-eye view of Zhouzhuang. From there it is not far to walk to South Lake, also part of Qujiang City, where the charming surroundings of trees and bamboo plants provide the ideal place for a rest. You can drink in its natural beauty while taking a walk through the South Lake Gardens, divided into four scenic spots: summer, fall, winter and spring.

Found on Zhongshi Street in front of the Puqing Bridge, it is just down the street from Fu’an Bridge, which is home to many lovely bridge towers that have been remade into tearooms, restaurants and shops.

A few of the above sights require a ticket, but these can be bought at the main entrance, along with a ticket to enter the old town. Before you travel back the 80 kilometres to Shanghai, sit down for a cup of tea and watch one of the free traditional shows. While you sip on green tea, ignore the tourists taking videos and imagine what it was like to live here 500 years ago. For just a few minutes, you’ll be in the ancient China of your dreams.

In Qingdao, the WeChat app is an absolute must for communicating. Instead of people asking, “What are your digits, baby?” they’ll ask, “What’s your WeChat, honey?”

Download UBER or DIDI to easily get taxis around town. Make use of your camera phone: take pictures of the addresses of your favourite places so you can show them to taxi drivers; take photos of the bus routes where you live as reference when you’re out and about; and snap some pictures of the Chinese dishes you like to make ordering easier in the future.

Understand Chinese currency: Renminbi, RMB, yuan, CNY, kuai, maos, jiaos, and bills vs. coins. Get familiar with the denominations so you don’t confuse the 1 yuan bill with the 1 jiao bill!

REFLECTION: OUR FIRST FEW MONTHS IN QINGDAO “If life was easy, where would all the adventures be?” Moving to Qingdao with three young children has been challenging, but Cat Kung and her husband have also found it to be the adventure of a lifetime. Here is what Cat has learned along the way.

Two years ago we arrived in Qingdao with a few suitcases and three children under three years old. We had no furniture and knew no one. I had three contacts listed in my phone. My children and I did not speak Chinese. I had pneumonia and my kids also had bronchial infections. We didn’t know where the grocery store was. We desperately needed haircuts and new shoes. Maybe you can relate. It can be a lonely and emotional time when you first arrive in a new city and a new country. The simple, everyday tasks become difficult and often humorous. Be patient. It takes time to acclimatise. Even two years later, my family and I are still figuring things out, but there are also many benefits to expat life. A move abroad teaches your family to be resourceful and creative, to take pleasure in the

simple joys of life, to go with the flow, and that you can make do with less. When we first arrived, we only had a few books and toys, so we ended up playing with a lot of cardboard, empty containers, rolls of tape, socks, ice-cubes, and made up games. These are the kinds of experiences that make living abroad worthwhile. First Thing's First One of the most important things we did initially was to connect with people on Qingdao Mamas Yahoo Group. It has been an invaluable resource! Also, there are

Shu Xiang Men Di (Songling Lu); Rui Hai Garden (Miaoling Lu/ Songling Lu) One thing I wish we had done when we arrived was to utilise my husband’s company’s Human Resources Department. One of my friends calls his HR department all the time for help with translating, transportation, apartment concerns, etc. Every day I learn something new about Qingdao. If you need something, there is probably a way to get it. It’s not always easy or cheap, but you can usually succeed. Just keep asking! some wonderful Qingdao Expat Blogs such as: Jacqueline Floro (http://qingdaoexpatsurvivalguide.com), Catherine Esser (http://travelingwithjc.com), and Jerry Jones (http://www. thecultureblend.com). When we first arrived in Qingdao, we visited the hospital and made an appointment with a doctor. I am glad we did this because, with three young boys, we have a medical incident almost daily. Also, have an emergency plan and emergency phone numbers listed in your home. With three children under three and my husband often out of town, finding a great ayi has been key to my sanity and survival. Honestly, I am not sure what I would have done without the extra help. I am grateful everyday for our ayi’s love and support. Several friends said that when they first moved to China they were in temporary housing. Once they found an apartment in an area where other expat families lived, their quality of life improved. Here are a few areas that have a lot of expat families: • Marina City Area: Jin Hai; Rui Yi; Yan Dao Hisense International Apartments; and Marina Terrace. • Downtown: Building No.9; Agora; Tai Gu Square. • Shilaoren/Laoshan: Golden Coast; Yi Jing; Guoxin Stadium;

Finding and Creating Community I know it’s hard to get out with young kids… but, GO! There are great parks and seaside walks here. Also, there are indoor play centres at almost every mall in town including Lion Mall, Leader, Hisense Mall, Marina City, MixC and HNA building. Even though we don’t have school-age kids, we often go to the international school activities like their Christmas Fairs and make use of their libraries. There is a playgroup at ISQ ECC on Monday and Thursday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. each week that is also worth checking out. The Qingdao foreign expat community is like none other. If anyone needs anything, we band together to help each other. There is a common understanding that we are all in similar situations. I hope you will reach out to me and others in the community. Even on those hard days, remember there are resources and people here who can help. If you have any other questions about living in Qingdao, feel free to email to Cat at happycat1026@gmail.com. myredstar.com

s the summer comes to an end, it’s that time again – back to school! Amidst the hustle and bustle of getting the kids ready for a new school year, autumn is also a great time to refresh your wardrobe and, of course, your look. With the help of Dong Hairdressing, mum of three, Cat Kung decided to go all in for a dramatic makeover! Georgia Leach reports.

// QINGDAO FAMILY /

Cat moved to Qingdao from Shanghai two years ago with her family. Originally a communications instructor at a college in the United States, she loves connecting with other young families in Qingdao and organising weekly play dates for her three boys who are all under the age of five. Cat is excited to get back into her life-long gym routine, which she has lost time for since becoming a busy mum in China. For a bit of extra motivation, she’s kickstarting her new workout regimen with a makeover!

Cat’s Favourite:

The Colour

The Makeup

After having children, Cat’s naturally lightbrown hair went from straight to a more curly texture, which she simply wears down, or twists and ties up for a more practical style. Cat chooses a vibrant new look of midnight blue hair with purple highlights to spice up the shorter hairstyle she adopted after having her kids. Hairstylist Eric begins by cutting Cat’s hair into a blunt bob with an amazing asymmetric line going down towards her chin, beautifully framing her face. Eric then starts the colouring process by separating the intended highlighted areas and bleaching them in preparation for the purple hue. After this, he coats the rest of the hair in the dark blue base colour and finishes by adding the purple to the bleached sections. After the hair is rinsed and blow-dried, final touches are made to the shape of the bob and a light wax is used for styling.

Cat usually sticks to a straightforward routine of moisturiser, mascara and tinted lipgloss, but makeup artist Yoyo wants to enhance her natural look to match her new hairdo. Starting with a translucent primer, Yoyo continues by applying a liquid foundation with a sponge, and then concealer under the eyes and in slightly pigmented areas. After a light layer of powder, a natural brown pencil is used to define Cat’s eyebrows, followed by some kohl eyeliner at the corner of the eyes and a few strokes of mascara. To finish, Yoyo adds a coat of soft pink lipstick. *Tips for autumn haircare: •• Wash hair more often. •• Deep condition regularly. •• Don't wash hair at night. Wash in the

morning and blow-dry it. •• Flatten unruly hair by blow-drying

separate sections downwards.

Absolutely perfect for a flash of colour when twisting my hair into a ponytail.”

BUCKLING UP YOUR BABY 宝宝安全座椅 Buying and installing infant car seats can be an absolute minefield for new parents, so Georgia Leach brings you a detailed guide on how to get started.

One of the biggest difficulties that parents face is wading through the numerous car seat options, and working out which seat is safe and suitable for their child, but also meets local restrictions. Car seat safety rules in China are often unreliable or nonexistent, so here are a few tips to ensure you make the right choice. What to look for when buying a car seat: • Choose a trustworthy and wellregulated brand that meets the latest safety standards. Look for an ‘E’ mark as a guarantee that a seat has passed European Standards or an ’S’ for United States Standards. • Second-hand seats are not recommended, as you cannot be certain of their history. If a car seat has been in an accident, the damage may not be visible. • Car seats must be suitable for your child's weight, size and development, so check their measurements before purchasing. • Car seats come in an array of different shapes and sizes, so make sure it will fit in your car in all the seat positions you intend to use. • The length of seatbelt and seat belt anchor points vary from car to car, so not all child car seats will fit your car— check the manufacturer’s website for compatibility.

How to safely install a car seat: • Car seats should always be placed in the back seat and not in the front passenger seat because of airbags. The centre of the back seat is statistically the safest place in the car for a car seat. • Start by fitting the car seat according to the manufacturer's instructions as these are specifically tailored to ensure your child’s safety. • Car seats must only be used if your car’s seat belt has a diagonal strap. • Child car seats should never be fitted in side-facing seats, as they are not designed to protect your child in this position. • To ensure the car seat is fully secure once installed, push your weight into the seat and tighten the seat belt–there shouldn’t be any slack in the seat belt. Most car seats having a locking mechanism around the seat belt to secure the seat in place, meaning there should be little or no movement in any direction.

Here we would like to introduce two car seat brands:

Lose your Phone, not your Savings 手机丢了怎么办?

Chinese people and expats alike have overcome their fear of using digital money and are now at ease using Alipay or WeChat to purchase things with their smart phones. From giving friends hongbaos to purchasing discounted movie tickets, these apps work like a charm. But what happens if you lose your phone? Is your money secure? Christina Cao advises you on how to keep your digital payment accounts safe if your phone goes missing.

L

osing a phone not only means losing your contacts, pictures, videos and chat history, but it also puts your online payment accounts at risk. Whoever cracks your phone’s password can instantly access your money, especially since some payment platforms only require a verification code that is sent to your phone. If you lose your phone, follow these directions to secure your online accounts:

STEP 1

Suspend your phone service and retrieve your phone number with a new SIM card. If you lose your phone during the day, head directly to your telecom provider’s office, report the loss and get a new SIM card with your old number and service information. The old SIM card in your lost phone will automatically become invalid. Be sure to bring your passport or ID card with you. *TIP: China Unicom and China Telecom users can go to any service offices in town to get a new SIM card, but China Mobile users can only go to the central customer service building located at 79 Fuzhou Nan Lu ( 福州南路 79 号 ) to retrieve a new SIM card. If you lose your phone at night, secure your account by calling your service provider’s customer service number (China Mobile-10086, China Unicom-10010, China

Telecom-10000) to report the loss and suspend your phone service until you get a new SIM card. *TIP: It’s normal to be forwarded to a switch board at first, but wait patiently until they tell you to press “0” for a call-centre worker to help you directly.

STEP 2

Reset the passwords of your accounts. Use your iPad, laptop or borrow a phone from a friend or family member to log in to your WeChat or Alipay account and reset your password.

STEP 3

Get your data back. This step involves advanced preparation: You should periodically back up your phonebook, pictures and other important information. Make full use of your phone’s backup function. iPhone users can back up their phonebooks, pictures and anything else they like by syncing their phone with an Apple account. Some Chinese phone brands such as Xiaomi also have a similar backup service called Mi Cloud. Windows phone users can check their inbuilt apps as well. If you have an Android phone, there are plenty of apps for you to choose from to

back up your data. Here are the most downloaded Chinese Apps to check out: (*Basic Chinese required) •• WeSync (QQ 同步助手 ) – A default phonebook backup app linked to a WeChat feature (Go to Me/Settings/General/ Features/Contact Sync), you can download WeSync and log in with your WeChat login, phone number or QQ number to back up your phonebook and pictures. •• Hetongxunlu(和通 讯录 ) – Developed by China Mobile, download and log in with your phone number to back up your phonebook; this service is only available to China Mobile users. •• Baiduyun ( 百度云 ) – Developed by Baidu, you can use this app to back up your phonebook, pictures, videos and more. A Baidu account is required, but you can easily register by using your email or phone number. It is especially useful to sync pictures and share files.

Chaoshan Beef Hot Pot

前海沿 By Wanny

By Shenlin

Chuncheon Teppanyaki Chicken

掂档 • 潮汕牛肉火锅

I’ve frequently read about Qian Hai Yan on WeChat Moments, a restaurant serving local dishes in Qingdao, and a few weeks ago I got the chance to go there. Initially wowed by the retro-style decor, the delicious and reasonably priced food went well beyond my already high expectations. My favourite is the fresh steamed shrimp, which features vermicelli, and is topped with garlic and scallions. But be warned–it’s always packed here at weekends.

The beef they serve here is tender and fresh. All the meat is hand-cut, which really makes a difference to the texture and quality of the beef. Once you’ve put it into the hot pot, the beef is ready in less than 10 seconds! You can try all different types of cuts, including some parts of the cow that you’ve never even heard of before. Their soups are good as well. Definitely worth a try!

Although situated somewhat out of the way on a small street in Laoshan, this Korean restaurant is truly a hidden gem. A massive hot plate of meat, vegetables, rice cakes, ramen or whatever else you want to add is cooked in front of you in a delicious sauce with a hint of spice. As it’s extremely filling, this place is perfect for a meal with a group of friends!

The district now has a direct link to Qingdao's old town - the Jiaozhouwan tunnel has cut journey times to around 20 minutes and more or less put the old ferry terminal out of business. Jiaonan, to the north, is linked to the eastern municipality by the longest bridge in the world (41.58km, completed in June 2011).
