Let this be a year of growth. We did not attain our main goals we looked to achieve as a team but, we attained most of them as individuals. As I write this, I look back on the season and what promise we had with such a young group and what we have to look forward to in the very near future. I look back at our huge come from behind victory against Seaford, coming down to the final match. One of the most exciting matches I have ever been a part of in my life. We set goals. Very high ones, because we said all year, “if you make goals that people don’t laugh at, they aren’t really goals”. Everyone in the room knows what has to be done and how we need to achieve those goals that are out of reach but, so close to our grasp. We are graduating three seniors and have a very young group returning, but it’s a young group that has experience and a desire to win. We have to carry that desire into the off season and make summer time wrestlers into winter time champions. We look back at guys like Jack DiMaio and Christian Tartaglia and see all the hard work that was put in throughout the entire year and want to one day be as good as them or better. Carry the torch that they were both given and continue the strong tradition of family, hard work and pride. As a team, it is our time to stand a top that podium and that time is now. It is up to you all to work hard all season and help attain those goals and stand a top that podium as an individual and as a team. Second place is no longer good enough!
To the seniors I wish you three nothing but the best and will be watching you though out your college days and cannot wait to see the growth into men. As coaches we helped develop that growth, it is now your time and your turn to finish it like all those before you have done. You came in as young adults and are leaving men and will one day have your own families and will get to tell all of the great wrestling stories you already have. You will always be a part of this wrestling family and will always be a Seahawk. We all wish you the best of luck and love you guys more than you can ever imagine. Make us proud like we know you will. — Coach

T
his year I am a senior In high school, wrestling my last season as a Seahawk. This is my 6th year wrestling and my 5th year on varsity. I have been wrestling since 7th grade and will continue hopefully at the collegiate level so this year will not be my last. I am a 2x county champ, 4x all county and 1x all conference and 2x Capri. Being part of this team has been one of the best experiences of my life for several reasons. I got to meet all different people who have inspired me and have opened my eyes in the sport and in life. Wrestling for six years is no easy task, but it’s a brotherhood. You get out what you put in and learn many lessons about not only life but who you truly are at your weakest moments. No one understands the level of commitment and hardship this sport takes no matter how many people you may explain it too. Wrestling made me mature over the years, I had my brother on the team for my first 3 years and it was awesome, but made for a very competitive mindset for the both of us. He had been my training partner ever since and became one of the best wrestlers I’ve seen. When he graduated it sucked because I no longer had my brother with me to suffer through the painful practices and push me. However, me and one of my best friends Jack became partners and have become dominate coming into this last year. Last year I couldn’t fool around as much nor this year because I have been a captain and had to set an example for my team but there were moments I just couldn’t help it. When your on a team with 7th graders it’s hard to keep from not messing around. It’s also made me a better person helping others when they lost, just like I got help when I had those same feelings of giving up. But thats what the sport does, it pushes you to your breaking point and makes you never give up and keep pushing forward towards your end goal.I like the sport it makes me more determined and focused and brings those two qualities to everything I do; whether it be doing school work, working out or just paying attention in class. Through all the hard work, determination, my partner (Jack) and I pushing each other along with the consist motivation to make my brother proud. I have become a two time county champ, lead my school in career wins and have accomplished goals I never thought possible. I can help my community by helping out the younger guys when I can and just being there for support and keep them going to strive on to bigger and better things I could not. Also by taking what I have learned and instilling it within others and hopefully make them stronger both mentally and physically. I am extremely grateful for all this program and my coaches have done for me, it’s been an unbelievable experience over the past six years and I would never regret any of it. — Christian Tartagalia

restling takes stamina and pushing past your limits all in pursuit of the taste of success. I am self-reflecting and realize it is not surprising that I am a wrestler. I am an all-around athlete but ultimately, to my parents’ dismay, wrestling became my passion. It is not a sport for the faint of heart or for loving parents to watch easily. The nature of this sport appealed to me like no other. It requires tireless commitment, discipline and fearless tenacity. Its tenets are in keeping with my approach to life. I absolutely love being part of a team and because of wrestling’s physical and mental intensity, the bond with my teammates and coaches is unwavering. I do however find comfort in the fact that ultimately, when I am on the mat, I am the soul determiner of my fate. I train virtually all year as wrestling is truly a way of life. During the season I work thirty hours a week for twenty weeks. All this time devoted to be at my best when I have my six-minute matches. It’s all about sweat equity. You have to put in the time to achieve. I am graduating this year and will be attending Bucknell University. While in Lewisburg, I will seek out opportunities to give back to the community. I have devoted time in high school to Save the Children, the Fresh Air Fund and the Huntington Family Service League. No matter where one lives, there is always the opportunity to help those in financial and emotional need. I will continue to help the organizations I have been involved with and will figure out, in what ways, I can help children in my local, college community. Wrestling has enabled me to possess a tremendous strength of mind and body. The sport will have lifelong effects on my day-to-day living. I never give up and I push myself to do well in all aspects of my life: physical fitness, academics, relationships, jobs, charity work etc. I believe with unrelenting desire and determination that I can and will control my destiny. — Jack Dimaio

y first year of wrestling in 8th grade didn’t go as well as I expected, I went 4-4 even though I expected to go undefeated. I learned that the result you get is a direct result of the effort that you put in, not only in wrestling but in life, that was the first of many lessons wrestling taught me. If you asked me after my 8th grade wrestling season in which sports I would be playing the next year, I probably would of answered football, lacrosse and maybe hockey and not a chance that I would be back on the wrestling mats come the next winter. As the year progressed I realized more and more the benefits that wrestling would bring me as I watched the success it brought the varsity football players such as Alex Kaley and Christian Tartaglia. Once football ended and wrestling season was about to begin my friend Liam Kaley helped me make a decision that changed my life forever and that decision was to join the wrestling season for the upcoming winter season. On the first day of practice, coach told us we were running the hill and I remember standing at the top of the hill and thinking I guess this won’t be too bad, I ran down the hill and on the way up I was already gasping for air and right when I got to the top that’s when I found out we weren’t just running that hill once, that was first of many runs up that hill that day and that is when I thought to myself “just make it through this year and you can quit.” In that first week of practice, I continuously told myself those words to try and get myself through the strenuous practices. But suddenly as the season moved on those words became meaningless to me. I began to grow a bond that I can not even begin to describe with my teammates and began to see that not only was wrestling a good decision It was one of if not the best decisions I’ve ever made. Although I was maybe slightly above average for the JV level and would get pinned in the first period or tech pinned in probably more than half of my varsity matches my freshman year, I still became obsessed with the idea of winning a county championship not only as an individual but, also a county championship for my team. Setting this goal for myself, pushed me to worker harder than I have and helped change myself both physically and mentally. After an offseason in the weight room I gained about 20 pounds in what I would like to say was mostly muscle. Putting in the work in the offseason gave me not only a physical but, also a mental edge over my opponents which allowed me to triple the amount of varsity wins I had the year prior. I ended up winning most improved wrestler on the team and coming third in county which gave me all county honors, but I was still not satisfied because I did not get my goal of being a county champ. Not winning counties that year only made me want to win more the next year. I spent the following summer lifting weights to get stronger for the upcoming football and wrestling season again and I also started to begin to wrestle at vogars (a wrestling club in Syosset) a little bit. I felt like I was in the best shape I ever been in going into the football season, when suddenly in our first game I broke my fibula and was out for 6 weeks. I was able to make it back for the last game of the regular season as well as the first round of playoffs but I was still no where close to 100%. When wrestling rolled around I became so out of shape I could barley do the conditioning and mentally I had very little confidence in my abilities. When the season began I started off 8-5 which was no where close to the goals/standards I had set for myself. During that slump I began to lift weights/ run 4 days a week in order to help get back into shape and tried to go to vogars 2 days a week in order to improve on my skill. Doing these extra workouts helped me regain my confidence and ability which led me to go 22-3 in the second half of the season and also helped me achieve my main goal which was winning the county championship! (30-8 record before states which has not happened yet) At the end of the day I have not regretted the effort that I put into wrestling one bit and my only regrets are that I didn’t start early or put even more effort in. If you are reading this and are still wrestling or thinking about wrestling my advice to you would be to not take any moments for granted not even those times when you are cutting weight or those times you just reached the bottom of the hill and can’t imagine getting yourself to the top because every moment in wrestling is a unique experience that you can only have in wrestling and every day the sport teaches you a new lesson.

t’s hard to believe my second season as a varsity wrestler has come to an end. I grew up a Seahawk, watching my older brothers wrestle at CSH for as long as I can remember. I grew up watching the CSH wrestling matches from the stands, always amazed at how the team’s members were so tough (and really big). I feel like I have been part of this team for many years, having watched most of the matches and known by many of the wrestlers simply as “little Hansen.” It is nice to see these guys when they return each year for alumni night. I was first introduced to wrestling through the VHW youth program run by Jason Layton and the CSH Mighty Mites wrestling run by coach Mike. I enjoyed learning from our high school coaches and past wrestlers like Cody Taddonio, Robert Incorvaia, and my older brother Eric. I later started lessons with Vougar at VHW. I train regularly with Vougar, Vito, and Nick on the Vougar’s Honors Wrestling team. I also take private lessons at Bellmore Kickboxing. One thing that I learned by this experience is that wrestling requires a lot of hard practices and dedication. I was happy when coach Mike talked to me about wrestling varsity even though I was just in the 7th grade. He encouraged me to join the team and told me that I could help, especially if I got my weight down to 101 pounds. I looked forward to that moment for many years. I was honored to win my first county title and be awarded Champion of Champions as a 7th grader. This year, just one year later, I wrestled at the 113 pound weight class. I was honored to finish the season with just over 50 high school varsity wins and placed second in the county. I expect to be over 130 lbs next year and hope to win my second county title. My other hobbies include, skiing, snowboarding, biking, swimming, skateboarding, and building computers. My favorite thing to do other than wrestle is to ski and snowboard out west. I am honored to be a Seahawk. — Christian Hansen

y name is Ben Bruno and I am in 8th grade. I wrestled at the 106 lbs. weight class this year. I also play Lacrosse, Football, and Hockey. Being on this team has shaped me in many ways. It has developed my desire to try harder and to give my best effort in wrestling and everything I do. Our coaches preach that if you put forth your best effort, what you get out will always be better than if you didn’t. Another way that being on this team has developed me is by helping me to never hang my head low. If you keep your head up you will want to get out there, move forward, and keep working harder and harder until you achieve what you want. These philosophies don’t just help on the wrestling mat but they have helped me in the classroom and in other sports I play. My goals for the future are to win counties, place in states, and get into the CSH 100 win club. I’d also love to win counties as a team. Our wrestling family and CSH community are very involved and driven in our efforts to raise money for those in need locally, across the country, and the world. Over all, wrestling has made me a better person. It has changed me mentally and physically. I cant wait for the season to start up again next year! — Ben Bruno

restling is a sport like no other, we compete as Individuals yet the sport builds a camaraderie like no other. With the long practices, running, weight room, drills, and early morning all day tournaments; the bond we create is unbreakable. We are not just a team, we are a family. We are there to congratulate each other on our wins, and there with support when we need it. Being a part of this team has taught me anything is possible with hard work and dedication. In wrestling, there is no one else to blame but yourself if you lose. That is what makes this sport so great it keeps you hungry. Hungry for the win and motivation to push yourself harder than you thought possible. Coach Mike has a saying ‘if you don’t set your goals high enough that people aren’t laughing when they hear them; then they are not high enough.’ One thing wrestling taught me was in order to succeed you have to believe in yourself. The greatest pleasure in life is doing what other people say you cannot do. When I am told I can’t do something I do whatever I have to achieve it. — Ben Curry

s the 2017 season comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on the accomplishments made as a team and as individuals and I am thoroughly impressed. Each wrestler, has developed and refined their techniques, skills, and abilities through continued perseverance and diligence. I would like to thank not each wrestler for their dedication, but also, I’d like to thank the parents for all that you do to contribute to this program and my fellow coaches, Mike Ferrugiari, Randel McCoy, and Thomas Powers. Overall, it was a great season that wouldn’t have been possible without everyone’s time and contributions. Being a student athlete, no matter the sport, is demanding and yet rewarding, however, it takes a specific individual to be a wrestler. Wrestling is a foundation sport. It is a sport built on dedication, hard work, self-discipline and requires not just athletic abilities and skills but mental toughness and the ability to quickly learn from your mistakes. It is a sport that requires balance, agility, hand-eye coordination, strength, endurance, and perhaps most importantly, concentration. One of the most difficult aspects of wrestling is that while you compete individually, your performance reflects not only you, but your team as well. You compete one-on-one in hopes of bringing yourself and your team to victory. To be successful in wrestling, one must be able to study their opponent, pinpoint their strengths and capitalize on their weaknesses within a matter of seconds. It is an inspiring sport to coach and this past season we have shown a great deal of growth. For a team that is extremely young, you have grown leaps and bounds and I am certain our future holds great things. To the underclassmen, thank you for your hard work and dedication this season. I see a bright future ahead for the team and look forward to the seasons to come where we can continue to build on what we have accomplished this season. Remember, off-season work, brings in-season success, so work hard in the months to come. To the seniors, congratulations! I hope you look back on your time in the wrestling room and on the mats and despite all the sweat and tears, think of it is as a positive time in your life. I wish you all the best in the years to come! Remember that you are forever a part of the legacy and family that is CSH Wrestling and I hope you all return to the wrestling room to impart the knowledge you have learned to our future wrestlers!

I
would like to take this time to first thank Coach Michael Ferrugiari for this amazing opportunity to be part of this program. Second I would like to thank the wrestlers and the parents for accepting me and making me feel right at home. From the minute I walked into the room, I knew I was fortunate enough to be part of this program. To the wrestlers of 2016-2017 season, I thank you for your dedication and desire to constantly get better and improve yourself. You embraced every goal coach set for you as individuals and as a team with amazing passion and desire. I cant stress to you enough that it is with that same level of passion and desire you showed during the season to be the best you can be, that you must carry over into your training throughout the next 9 months. Gentlemen, this team has an unyielding amount of potential to be a very, very good wrestling team next year. The potential to set just a standard, if not higher, then the standard set this year. However, potential is just that, without action it is nothing. Without the willingness to work, the necessity to constantly better yourself, the potential will diminish into regret. It is easy to say and anyone can say, “I want
to be the best,” anyone can say “ I am going to train as hard as I can”. It’s easy to say, “ I am going to wrestle all summer”. It’s easy to say, “I am going to be champ”. Guys that’s why everyone says all those terms, because it’s EASY! DO NOT take the easy way out. DO NOT have regrets. November will be here before you know it. Will you be ready? It’s for you to decide. Champions become champions in the off-season. Champions do not have off days. Remind yourself of that every day. NO REGRETS! To the seniors, I could only wish we had more time to wrestle together. Jack and Tart it is nice to see that Coach Mike and Coach Anthony and your parents have obviously instilled a tremendous amount of character and work ethic into you both over the years. I can say I am proud to have had the opportunity to coach such fine young men and I thank you both. I know you will be successful in whatever life throws at you. Good luck to you both in your future endeavors. I look forward to seeing you both back in the room over breaks.

restling is a great sport it has molded my personality and pretty much the way I approach everything. It gives me confidence and perseverance to do better in school. My wrestling experience was a great journey, I made new friends got in better shape and became a better wrestler. When I first joined I was out of shape and really not ready. I almost had a heart attack the first time we ran stairs, now it is a piece of cake. I have a lot of friends on the team that are better than me. Since wrestling has been going on all of my grades went up. My coach Mike helped me a lot also and taught me some life lessons he was a very good coach I admired his style of coaching he never got angry, he was wise and calm. Wrestling is my favorite sport because I love the sport and I love the person it has made me become. The wrestling season was long but felt very short. It is a hard sport, sometimes we didn’t get home to 1.30 in the morning from a tournament. This season I got better, I made new friends and learned a lot of lessons. have changed a lot in the past three months. I credit wrestling to these changes. It has changed my work ethic, my dedication and my confidence. I have always been very athletic and have participated in many different sports. I play lacrosse, football, soccer, ice hockey, golf and basketball. The dedication and time that is needed for wrestling far exceeded my initial thoughts. It is a grueling workout, both for mind and body. I wasn’t sure that I wanted to wrestle. Then my Dad, in a positive way, pushed me to try and I did. That was last year, in eighth grade. I figured I would wrestle to stay in shape between football and lacrosse seasons. After having just completing my second season, I am hooked. As the season progressed I started understanding the sport more and really began to like it. In the beginning I thought it was an individual sport, just me and my opponent. I have come to realize it is far more than that. Wrestling has a huge team component, especially here at Cold Spring Harbor High School. This sport, I have learned first hand, requires lots of self-discipline. This is true for on and off the mat. Off the mat I have to really watch my diet and hydration. This has been difficult but good to have learned. On the mat I have to handle myself with grace and dignity, because I am the only one out there, so everything is on me. I have enjoyed going to tournaments, practices and team dinners. I have learned so much from watching the talented upper classmen on the team, especially the seniors. I will miss them next year. Overall, wrestling exceeded my expectations. I am happy that my father encouraged me to give it a “shot”. I am looking forward to next season, and hoping to improve my overall record from this season. — Casey Reynolds

i, my name is Eric Fay and I’m a 9th grade varsity wrestler at CSH. I wrestled at 113 lbs. My experience this year was great. The last 2 years I wrestled junior high which was nothing compared to the varsity level. This year was great I became so much better in just 2 weeks. The beginning was rough. The first few weeks were hell. We were Conditioning more than I’ve ever before.I lost a lot which made me put my head down. I started to give up during the matches. I soon learned to deal with it and it suck it up and fight like it’s the last match I’ll wrestle. This helped me finally get the few wins that I have. I started to love the sport as the season went on. I got injured midway through, I was out for 8 weeks. This was a setback for me because my stamina was horrible when I came back. I was coming back with county’s right around the corner I was not in good shape. At county qualifiers I had lost my match to make it to county’s. I got caught doing something unnecessary during the match and got pinned. I was pissed I had my next match last match of the season. I told myself I will end my season with a win. It was the second period this kid was better than me but I wouldn’t give up. I was on top thinking let me finish with style so I went for a leg cradle and pulled it off and my team was stoked as was I. Everyone gave me high fives and congratulated me. I was just happy I won. You have to work to get anything you want. And a lot of the time the work you need to do to succeed wont be easy. The beginning of this season did not start the way I wanted it to. I had to work even harder than I already was in practice in order to change the results. Slowly, the results of my matches did change. Another thing that wrestling this season has helped me learn is that results do not come quickly. Coach told me “You have to take your lumps before you can give them”. This mean you have to experience rough or disappointing situations or matches before you can adapt and change the results. In the future, I hope to go on to win a county championship and place in the state tournament. Overall, wrestling has helped me in many ways. — Jacob Bruno

he 2016-2017 wrestling season was one that I’ll never forget. This team put their blood, sweat, and tears into making the Seahawks a feared wrestling team, and have done so, and then some. Even though they’ve in the process put a backorder on nose plugs, the all-around effort did not go unnoticed. From the beginning of the season, we knew that we had something special. We set goals that we were intent on accomplishing and for the most part, have done so. We are continuously climbing up the ‘league ladder’ and are finally on the cusp of breaking through. From our current position, we can only continue moving forward. The thing that I would say I was most proud of, was seeing how much the offseason work turned decent wrestlers with promise, into county champions, county finalists, and All-County place winners. The drive and determination implemented by this year’s captains and team leaders was evident throughout the summer and season. Now, the question is, which wrestlers are going to follow suit and put in the effort to become a champion? Who is willing to become that committed to a sport that allows YOU to dictate the outcome of your every match up? The thing to remember is, no matter how hard someone works, there is always someone working harder… Be the man working harder. Nothing is given to you, it’s got to be earned. The choice is yours fellas. It was an honor to be a part of this wrestling season and I can’t wait until we are officially back in the room. Make the offseason count boys!

have been on the CSH wrestling team for 3 years, starting as an 8th grader. As an 8th grader, I took 3rd in the county, and that is when I decided this was going to be my sport and I really wanted to dedicate myself to it. In my 9th grade year I improved tremendously, but fell short of my goals, losing in the county finals. As a tenth grader I improved greatly, but still failed to capture a county title. Despite these losses being disappointing, they have helped motivate me to work harder and keep on pushing to achieve my goals. Being a part of the team over the past three years has taught me a few things, not only about myself, but also about wrestling in general. The sport of wrestling pushes you mentally about as much as anything in life you will encounter. It shows you that you have the ability to accomplish and overcome things that you never thought you could. Being on the team has also shown me the great camaraderie the sport builds amongst you and your teammates. I want to continue to wrestle throughout the rest of high school and as of right now I plan on wrestling in college. The world of wrestling has also shown me what it means to give back to those who are in need, as the community of wrestling always supports those in need. These qualities will help in the future when trying to improve the community, or give back in anyway. — Raymond Costa

My plans for the future are to continue to wrestle and progress in the sport. I will have to see what path I will choose in college, and whether or not wrestling will be in that vision. I want to help make the community better any way I can, whether it’s something as small as helping the junior high wrestlers learn moves, or something more involved like volunteering for a food drive. restling is more than just a sport. It is a proving ground for individuals. There is something special about one man competing against another with no one to blame their mistakes on. This individualism inspires growth and progression of wrestlers both technically and mentally. After one season of wrestling your self-confidence sky rockets and the sky is literally the limit. Our team isn’t just a team, though. We are a brotherhood who are like a surrogate family. We mess with each other; We help each other; and at the end of the day, we enjoy what we do. I am glad to say that wrestling has been a major part of my life. Over the last three seasons the countless amount of hours spent training and getting better really have made me a better person. y name is Teddy and I consider myself a sportsman. With the support of my Dad, I have become an expert bow and rifle hunter as well as, an excellent tournament fisherman. My walls at home are decorated with trophy fish and White-tail deer horns. I also grew up with martial arts and trained for several years at Tiger Schulmann’s. I was fortunate enough to compete and win at 3 regional martial arts tournaments in New Jersey. Since arriving at Cold Spring Harbor, I decided to join the wrestling team and feel it was one the best decisions I have made. Family is the best word I could think to describe how wrestling brought our team together. During matches my teammates became my brothers. We all had the same common goal in mind, and that was to beat the crap out of the team across the mat. Most people’s goals during the wrestling season is strictly on getting their name on the wall. While of course I want my name on the banner, I saw this season differently. My goal throughout the season was to beat the guys at my weight for the starting spot. While I did make counties, I didn’t achieve the goal of being the best wrestler in my weight class and that’s just fuel on the fire for me. Wrestling is unlike any sport I have ever played. It’s more personal and intimate then lacrosse or football. The feeling of winning a match is something that you can’t really describe. Especially at important tournaments. During wrestling matches all you think about is winning. Matches are the only thing I can think of that can make the whole world around you stop. All that matters is winning that match in six minutes. During those difficult Uniondale and Syosset practices all you think about is getting off the mat and going home. But after spending some time at home this week all I can think about is getting back on the mat. The wrestling coaches this year changed everything for me. I loved how they kept things funny and great at some times, but serious and angry at others. Without our coaches this year, I don’t think I would love the sport as much as I do now. I can’t wait for our epic season next year so we can finally beat LV in a match! — Teddy Theodoris

I will be going to the gym to become stronger, and I will also practice on my own. This wrestling team means a lot to me. It means dedication, on and off the mats, family, and most of all hard work. This sport has made me more mature and a better man because it has taught me to never give up and always face your fears. I think to make this world and community a better place we should be doing community service to help. oach Mike has been probably one of the biggest reasons I choose to wrestle. When I was in 7th grade Coach Mike was my Football coach. My brothers were all into wrestling, but I was still not sure. Ever since then one of my brothers quit and I have considered wrestling as one of my top two sports. Although Coach Mike was the Varsity Coach, I still wanted to continue for him to be my Coach. Wrestling has shaped me as a man because it has disciplined me. Wrestling is a sport that requires so many other responsibilities other than just being on the mat. You have to eat right, train hard during practice, and then run after practice to stay in shape or make weight. Wrestling has also taught me to have respect for food, because when I cut weight I realize how hungry I am. Yet I always know if I get to the point were I need food it’s right there for me, but for some misfortunate people in the world they feel worse than me and don’t know when their next meal will be. For me I’m always so proud to say that I wrestle and I can’t wait for next year. — Rich Striano

restling is like no other sport, no other activity, no other anything. It is completely unique. Wrestling seems like individual sport, but at heart it’s a team sport. The amount of work and hours we put in during the season bonds us together. From running the Halls of the school to carrying each other up the hill in front of the school. We spend the whole day with each other on the weekends at tournaments. Yes it’s mainly serious but we often joke around and mess with each other. When you go out on to the match it may be only you out there but all of your teammates are right behind you screaming at you to “squeeeeeze” for the pin. Winning an individual match is always great, but honestly it doesn’t compare to when everyone on your team comes together to collectively beat the other team. The things that you will remember most are those crazy and close wins that you just pull away with. You’re not going to remember when you tech pinned your match or when you won a tournament. The fame and trophies will go away but your team never will. They will always be there if you’re in need. On top of this wrestling gives you confidence. It gives you a chip on your shoulder, not an ego but a chip on your shoulder. Mainly because we have a respect for the sport and the time and commitment everyone puts into it. We are enabled to carry this into everything we do, from other sports, to life in general. Out of everything, that has been the most influential thing I have gotten from wrestling. You really can’t fake that to. It only comes from hard work and hours put in. — Liam Kaley

o me wrestling isn’t just a sport or a way to pass time after school; it’s a learning experience. When I was in seventh grade my dad said I should do wrestling. At first I did not like the idea of having to wear a singlet or wrestle guys, but little did I know it would shortly become my favorite sport. Wrestling’s my favorite sport not only because I like wrestling in general, but also because it teaches you and prepares you for life. When you step out onto that mat and it’s just you and your opponent nothing else matters, everything just disappears. To me the most important thing about wrestling is you can’t blame anyone else if you loose, and it’s no one else’s accomplishment besides yours if you win. Wrestling has really helped me become the person I am today, it taught me to stand up in what I believe in, and helped me build courage. — RJ Schupler

hen I started wrestling in 7th grade, I had no idea what to expect. The feeling of winning a match is like no other. I continued to work hard as a wrestler in the 8th grade, however, as a Freshman, nothing could have prepared me for the feeling I had recently when I won my first tournament. It was the best feeling knowing that I tried my best and I was able to support my team. What I like the most about wrestling is that it’s the only sport I’ve been involved in that’s both individual and team based. Being a part of the Cold Spring Harbor wrestling team has made me realize that hard work and commitment can really pay off. It has helped me raise the bar for myself as I watched my teammates make it to counties and even states. I plan to work extremely hard over the next few years to become an even better wrestler. I’m excited about the potential of extending my passion of wrestling from high school to college. If the opportunity of being part of a college team arises then I’m going to go for it. I do my best to support my community by participating in fundraisers and continuing to do community service whenever possible. f it weren’t for coach Mike, I probably wouldn’t have wrestled. Coach Mike was my middle school football and lacrosse coach and when I was in 7th grade he asked me if I wanted to wrestle, not only did I say no, I said hell no. The thought of worming around on a sweaty mat with other sweaty guys made my skin crawl, but then some how, some way, he convinced me to wrestle. My first year of wrestling was fantastic, I won all of my matches easily. The second year I won all of my matches except 1. I lost my 1st match to a kid from Clarke who took 2nd in the county at 220 this year. (1-0) After I lost, I was so upset and determined to win the rest of my matches that I worked harder and I did win the rest of them. This year, (freshman year) I didn’t think that I was going to wrestle but I am so glad that I did. My goals were to take All-County as a Freshman and Sophomore and become a county champion as a Junior and Senior. Unfortunately I took AllConference (not All-County) this year which just makes me want to become a county champion next year as a Sophomore. — Dominic Striano

y name’s Zach i’m 14 years old in 9th grade. I started wrestling in eighth grade and really liked it so I stuck with it. The transition from Junior High to the High School level was a big jump. There was way more work and it was a much much harder practice than before. I knew this would get me in better shape and I was able to play one of my favorite sports in the meantime. This team developed my attitude towards exercise very positively, before this I used to give up halfway through something but now I just keep pushing. First match of the season I was weighing in at around 165lbs. barely making weight when the time came I never had to cut weight in my life so I tried my hardest to get down 5 pounds and when the time came I made it right on the dot. I felt really good about it. By the end of the season all of the warm-ups and running we did in practice as well as some I did on my own and I got down to 145lbs. This taught me great discipline on how I should diet and cut correctly and healthily. This showed me how valuable food actually is in all honesty. I plan to stick with wrestling through high school and if I were to get a scholarship for it I would wrestle at the college level. Throughout the season our team raised a lot of money for our program and for some charitable causes. I don’t think many other sports program do this kind of stuff because they don’t take it as seriously as we do. — Zach Wu

i, I’m Shane Mitchell. I am in 9th grade and wrestle and play baseball. I started wrestling in 8th grade, so this was my second year wrestling. Being a part of this team has made me into a greater man. I always go the extra mile, push myself, and most importantly never give up. Wrestling has taught me these things and I will never forget them throughout life. There’s no easy day in wrestling and whenever we were doing something difficult, I would always think of a quote, “If I can take1 it, I can make it.”- Louis Zamperini. Louie was a US prisoner in World War ll and he went through hell and back probably around 20 times. His story is one of the most brutal and courageous stories and whatever I went through, he went through worse. The reason why I’m saying this is, whenever in wrestling something was hard I would never stop just like Louie. One of my future plans is getting better over the summer by joining a wrestling camp. Putting in the extra work is what really counts and by joining a camp and going to Vougars, I will definitely improve my wrestling skills. One of my goals in wrestling is to get my name put on that banner and become a county champ. Another goal is to place in states. I don’t really know right now if I want to wrestle in college; I guess time will tell. Doing community service would definitely improve my community. Some examples would be recycling, helping out at the library, and donating things. I would like to talk about two amazing matches. The first match was at a tournament in Manhasset. I was pretty mad at the time because I lost my first match, but then they called me up for my second match. When I got to the front table the person who I was wrestling was standing next to me. In 2 seconds I realized I was wrestling a girl. Before the match I was pretty nervous, because if I lost it would be awful. As I was walking onto the mat the girl was still getting ready and it was only the referee and me. The thing that I never will forget for as long as I live was what the referee whispered in my ear. He said, “ Don’t kill her.” I laughed as soon as he said it and it made me relaxed. In the end I won. The other match I would like to talk about is also against a girl. Coach Mike had to choose one out of the three people in my weight class to wrestle the girl, and of course he picks me. I asked him before the match why he chose me. His reason was, I left a tournament early one time because I hurt my back and he said I should have stayed. And he asked me before the match, “ Mitchell you ever gonna leave a tournament early again.” I said “No.” As I was about to walk onto the mat and wrestle coach said to me, “Mitchell I just want to let you know that no boy has ever lost to a girl in Cold Spring Harbor history.” I was basically pissing my pants after he said that. Thank God I won that match. I just wanted to say thank you to all the coaches for a great year and to the best captains I could have ever asked for. — Shane Mitchell

Why join the wrestling team as a junior? Two reasons. First, I wanted to improve in football and there is no better sport to try as a compliment than wrestling. Wrestling is all about balance, leverage and quickness, which are all integral parts of being a good football player. Most importantly, wrestling is about toughness. Like football, wrestling is a sport that demands physical and mental toughness. The second reason I joined the wrestling team was for the challenge. Everyone knows that wrestling is one of the most demanding sports you can try. Yes, the matches can be tough. Especially the tournaments, where you can wrestle five matches in one day. But, the practice and training are known to be the most demanding test of a high school athlete. I also knew from my friends that wrestled, that our coaches push the team hard. Looking back, I am glad that I joined the wrestling team this year. I believe that I will be a better football player next year because of my experience on the mat, and beyond that I am sure that I have benefitted from the hard work. — Davay Marasciullo

restling teaches discipline, hard work and to never give up. This year was my second year wrestling on the varsity team led by Coach Mike Ferrugiari . Last year was fun and all and I learned a lot but this year I looked forward to the difficult practices. From last year, I learned that there was no easy way to make it through each practice as the only way to get through it was to work hard and hope Coach Mike was in a good mood. From running stairs to wrestling full live matches there’s rarely a dull moment during practice as the team is always focused on the next match. Wrestling matches are extremely intimidating as it’s only you and another guy basically fighting to see who the better wrestler is and when you lose you have no one else to blame but yourself. That is humbling but when you win there is no better feeling. Although it’s an individual sport our wrestling team at Cold Spring Harbor is like family and throughout the course of the season my teammates and I developed a special bond from supporting each other at tournaments and matches to working hard at practice together, that will last a lifetime. — Surrendra Singh

restling is a very unique sport. It is one of the only sports that is both individual and team based. You can never rely on your team to win a match, but your team always relies on you to help them. Because of this everyone naturally forms great trust with each other. The hard work of wrestling has made me a better person. Over the two years I have wrestled, I have been out twice. The first time, I tore my shoulder and was unable to wrestle. The second time, I got a virus that took a few weeks to resolve. Although I have gotten hurt and sick, I do not plan to quit wrestling. It has taught me perseverance and resilience. It was very disheartening to see my friends wrestle when I couldn’t. I plan to work hard over the off season and come back ready. SEASON IN REVIEW
T
he season has concluded and the future continues to look bright. We ended this past weekend at the NYS tournament with senior Christian Tartaglia completing his quest for an all-state title taking 6th in NYS. His accomplishments over the past five years as a starter are goals that every underclassmen should look to achieve themselves. His work ethic and drive to be the best are exemplary qualities that all of the boys have looked up to him for. As a team, we may not have reached some of the goals we looked to achieve, but the next few years we are going to be a force to recon with. With off-season camps and tournaments throughout the summer, we will achieve those goals that we fell short of this year. Congratulations again to our seniors Jack DiMaio and Christian Tartaglia for their years of dedication to this team and this sport and to your coaches. You will never be forgotten and will go down as some of the best wrestlers to ever go through the program. No one can take away what you have achieved over the past 4/5 years of wrestling. The memories that you will have for the team and the sport you will carry with you for a lifetime. Good luck in all of your future endeavors and make us proud like we know you will.
