Nobody wants eyeshadow and swea running into their eyes nonstop, so instead a more fresh-faced, sun-kisse look could also work for you. hich sex and the city character are you?; This is the quintessential question Anna Kathleen grew accustomed to during her time studying at New York University. But Anna isn’t your quintessential designer. “The person I design for isn’t in Sex and the city” she explains. “ She is fashion forward and empowered by necessity”
n n a kathleen At first sight, Anna Kathleen, 25, has the demeanor of a genuine New York City born-and-bread artist, however this Brooklynite comes by way of Colorado. “Growing up, I would always make clothes’ Anna briefly tells me. “ I would buy Vogue at the grocery store every month. I never realized that fashion was a career opportunity” But Fashion wasn’t what first attracted Anna to the Big Apple.” I first came to New York because of my interest in theatre” she explains, “ When I first arrived here, I was inspired by the cultural diversity that the City had to offer”.
One of the stigmas that go along with being a design student in New York City is the ever competitive internship. Whom you work for and what you’re doing can just as easily seal your fate, as well as put you on the map. Anna Kathleen had her fill of intern duties during her school years having worked at several Fashion houses and design companies, most notably Catherine Malandrino. “ One of my duties there was working on a tote-like bag that was for a collaboration with Lacoste,” Anna tells me. “ I worked for an apparel corporation as well, but I left that gig because it just was not for me.”

As Seen Through Blue Eyes
SO THIS IS MY LIFE’S STORY: PART 1
G
rowing up my life was filled with sunshine and salt water. Running along the beaches was my oasis. Sun streaked hair and tan lines were a way of life. Wanderlust led me to the woods above the cliffs overlooking the sea.
Childhood viewed through the looking glass.
But as to the yin for every yang, there were dark sides. There were also the bright fluorescent lights of hospital rooms. There was the dank smell of alcohol and the presence of children who could not be children. They had a child’s face, but a body that was rapidly trying to self destruct, leaving some in wheel chairs. I was diagnosed when I was 2 years old. Born a happy and healthy baby for those two years I never even had a cold. Once my disease hit, it hit hard and everything started to spiral rapidly downward. No one knew what was wrong with me. No one could

diagnose why I was getting sicker and sicker. I was dying. I don’t remember much during that time. I remember hospital rooms. I remember not being able to walk. I would walk a few steps and fall down, get back up, fall down again. I remember the doctors saying I would never walk again. My muscles were disintegrating. No one knew why. My disease was one that they had never seen before. Soon thereafter I underwent surgery for a muscle biopsy from my back leg. The doctors put me under too soon and I woke up right as I was being wheeled into the surgical room. I started screaming and I remember vividly seeing my mom in a corner and crying out to her as six or seven doctors restrained a terrified me until the sedatives kicked in. The results came back that I had a disease that was a cousin to Lupus, Dermatomyositis. Weekends that should have been spent running in the sunshine and breathing in the sea, were wasted on bags of fluids filled with drugs to keep me alive. I

didn’t realize that I had to learn what stoicism was before I even knew how to fall in love. Beyond the monthly trips into Manhattan for blood work, and the weekly injections of steroids, I started developing calcium deposits on the left elbow of my arm. Not only were they unsightly and left me feeling ugly, it became necessary for more monthly visits to the hospital for an experimental medication that was deemed practically radioactive and unstable. I went once a month and sat for three hours hooked up to an IV filled with medication that left me feeling horrible. I remember watching horror movies in the hospital because nothing really scared me anymore at that point. I think in moments of suffering, this carves away deepness. Sometimes that deepness left me feeling like a black hole. But there is good in everything. Black holes have the ability to suck in everything around them, including the light. That light becomes a part of it. My light was that without my disease I would have never been able to cultivate my talent for drawing. Being stuck inside all the time creates a need for an outlet. Drawing created a form of catharsis that became the stepping stone of my life. But it did not entirely distract me from the endless rounds of medications. All with varying side effects. Some were so new and experimental we had no idea what the long term effects would be. It’s very isolating being a child with an incurable disease. I think it makes you question the philosophy of life at a younger age. I remember having to disappear
the two are the times when loneliness seeps in, and so, I would turn to stories of people who have felt such strange and bizarre things as I have. Now it is my turn to give back, because we all need to make a mark, a stain, something...before we are pushed aside for a younger, fresher perspective. I want you to know that if you really think about it, you have survived everything you have gone through. You will be ok.
during my lunch break to go to physical therapy and my friends would always question where I was. I had to live a life of mystery because I was embarrassed. I was embarrassed and ashamed, so I kept my secrets. I remember on my birthday every year I’d make a wish to get better and be normal just like everyone else. Around my 16th birthday I lied to my family and I stopped taking my medication. It was making me feel sick and I was so sick of it. A month went by, and I finally confessed to my doctors what I did. They freaked out. They told me how dangerous and stupid I was to take a chance like that. But then, they ran blood work, and my results came back…normal. My wish came true. I now live in remission. My disease is asleep deep inside of me. Unfortunately, it can only end in one of two ways. One: I live a life of remission and the monster inside of me lays dormant. Two: Its wakes up and returns with a vengeance. The other night I was sitting with my mom, talking. She told me that I was too young to remember this but the doctors wanted my blood work to be sent to a research facility in D.C to be studied to help other children who may also be born with this. She told me the doctors asked if I knew how to sign my name… and when my mom said yes, I signed my name to release my blood work to help children of the future. I never knew. But I am grateful she told me. I am glad that although this form of suffering was inevitable for me, that through it I was able to help future generations.

Net-a-porter will continue with the styles for fall. But as popular as this Instagram trend was, Sept. 7 is when the old fashion rule comes into play about white after Labor Day. It may be time to change it up, styling with layers to keep this timeless piece for the rest of the year. She’s fast earned herself a dedicated following by her high demand one of a kind designs, which includes the likes of Anna Dello Russo, bloggers in the fashion who are writing, wearing and reviewing.Net-a-Porter are now selling the lust-have bold blouses, colorful jumpsuits and frocks, – just in time for us to flaunt them on our summer holidays and add layers for the fall. You only have to look at the amount of comments on these fashion-influencers Vita Kin-wearing posts to see how in-demand the dresses are. Designer Lisa Marie Fernandez says she’s never been stopped as many times as when wearing A Vita Kin dress which everyone wants around the world. Based on traditional Slavic designs, they’re made from luxe linens. Every piece is wearable chambray denim hues or with a touch of neon to give a pop factor. She’s been designing them for over 8 years. She started off my making them for friends and family but it seemed as if she just exploded out of nowhere, cryptically skyrocketing through the Instagram generation instantly with no website or sale page. She reconstructs traditional dresses adjusting them to a boho-chic eccentric mood, adding a hippie vibe. A perfect fusion of folk style, refinement and modernity that was rapidly embraced by street effortless style. What makes Vita Kin’s clothes even more desirable is the aura of mystery created by the brand regarding retailers. To know where to buy a dress or a vyshyvanka, the typical Ukrainian blouse, you will have to check out regularly on her instagram: @vyshyvanka_by_vitakin Instagram page and wait for the next release for stores or online boutique like net-à-porter or matchesfashion to announce a new sale or design. Each limited-edition garment is handembroidered following old Ukrainian techniques. This is a big deal, in Ukraine and you can get your hands on these worldwide.

FORGIVENESS
I
am a recovering addict. I’ve been sober for a long time now. In my recovery I have had to look back on all the things that I did while I was getting high and forgive myself for doing these things. Some of it was easy. Like forgiving myself for becoming a mean and nasty person because drugs were the most important thing in my life. Any drug addict is not very pleasant. There were things that were a little harder like telling my mom exactly how much money I stole from her to buy drugs. That took a bit more effort and work to achieve self forgiveness. Then there are some things that I don’t even like to think about. These are the things that still come up in my nightmares. In my addiction there were many times that I had been kicked out of my house and either slept in my car or went from friend’s house to friend’s house. Eventually my friends got sick of me because I wasn’t very grateful when I was high. This had me getting more creative, and by creative I mean manipulative. At first it wasn’t too bad. I’d find someone who would want to smoke some weed, get as messed up as possible and either they wouldn’t let me drive or I’d just pass out. But that person would usually kick me out in the morning and learned not to let me do that again. So I moved to something a little bit more extreme. I’d find dudes who would let me over so we could get high and convince them to let me sleep over by getting naked. I blocked out the feelings that I was abusing myself because I liked sex way too much. I only felt a small amount of guilt that was easily pushed away with another hit off the bong. I honestly thought that I was living the life. I took pride that I was the one making the booty calls and not the other way around. I had this false sense of pride and power because I was sleeping with 3 or 4 different guys every week. It was a weird sense of power that I had. But some of these guys started telling me I couldn’t come over. Or they would ask me to leave after we had sex. This was confusing. It was like my power
30
There was no way I could get around the shame in this. There was no excuse I could make to rationalize this act. It is hard to even say that I traded sex for drugs never mind forgiving myself for doing it. It took me over a year in sobriety to even admit to another person that I had done this. After months and months of talking about it and
constantly reminding myself that I am no longer the person that drugs had morphed me into, am I able to accept my horribly misguided actions. I was listening to the call of drugs and nothing else. I live a spiritual (not religious) life style. I’m grateful for my days and for the people that are present in them. I give to the world only what I would want back to me. I smile at strangers and hold doors open for them. I compliment the people that get on my nerves and I give constant reminders to the people I love how much they mean to me. I do this because as long as I’m giving positivity I am receiving it and that makes forgiveness 100 times easier.
There was no way I could get around the shame in this. There was no excuse I could make to rationalize this act...

was stripped away from me and now I felt violated. They were doing to me exactly what I was doing to them and it didn’t feel good. I was sleeping in my car and spending more money on gas because I was driving around all night so my drug money was getting dangerously low. Sex used to get me what I wanted. I used to just want a place to stay, but now all I wanted was to get fucked up. So I used sex for drugs.

Secret Life
Story of a Privileged Girl Gone Wrong. The Secret Life of a Privileged Girl Gone Wrong is an ongoing story of my personal life’s struggle battling addiction, lose, and losing my sense of self. I want to share my story with you in hopes that any young girl battling addiction can hopefully relate and see that she is not alone in her struggles. Also, putting my story out there for the world to see I hope will bring realization to stereotypes people have on addicts. Addiction does not care who you are, where you are from, what race your are, what gender, what religion you practice, it can and it does happen to all types of people. I did not come from a broken home. I was not abused as a child. I was raised in a loving family, with parents and grandparents who taught me values and
morals. But the diseases of addiction still got me in its grips and held me down for years. My story is real and it is scary. My life has not been pretty. But in order to save another suffering addicts life, I must share my story to help prevent other girls from hitting the rock bottoms that I did. My hopes are to raise the next young addicts bottom, that she will get help before she has to experience the things I had to experience. No one deserves to live a miserable life and if you are struggling with addiction I want you to know that there is a way out and if you reach out for help there are people who have been exactly where you are and they are willing to help in anyway they can. With Love, C.M.S.

n 2008, I began attending college in
Boston to pick me up and bring me back to Long Island where I would attend my very first rehab, Seafield in West Hampton. I did not know what to expect going in there. I had no idea it would be so strict, especially when it came to speaking to members of the opposite sex. I felt completely out of place there. I most definitely felt that I did not belong. While I was living in Boston for the past 4 years, Long Island was being hit with a heroin epidemic that I was fortunately far far away from. For 6 days I hung out with girls who only wanted to talk about heroin and how great it was. I slowly started to become intrigued. On the 6th day of my stay at Seafield I ended up getting kicked out for writing a note to a guy. It was 11:00pm and I was not about to call my parents. So I called my friend, who was abusing heroin at the time, to come get me. She was the same close childhood friend who I got drunk with for the first time. The minute I got into the car, I looked at her and begged her to let me try dope. After some persuasion she gave in and ended up shooting me up for the first time. Never in my life, up to this point, have I ever been interested in shooting heroin. But after almost a week of only hearing junkies glamorize the drug, the minute I left it was all I could think about. Its like the quote from the movie “Blow“ (one of my favorites of course)... I went into rehab with a bachelor's in cocaine, and came out with a masters in heroin. Well not exactly a masters at that point, but it was the beginning of the end for me.

Diaz has used lace in many of his collections from his 2012 Ensembles Holiday Collection to his most recent Sam Et Suzy Collection for Fall 2016. His 17-piece Ensembles Collection displayed color-blocking, a balance of feminine silhouette, and use of romantic elements including lace which is flattering for all types of women. Highlighted in the 2016 Manila Fashion Festival was Diaz’ Sam Et Suzy Fall 2016 Collection. Described as “romantic and geeky”, Diaz features a relaxed and chic look, flaunting his signature lace and floral styles. What we love most about Chris Diaz is his constant feminine look. His spring/summer 2016 collection “Stoked” was featured in the Manila Fashion Festival in October 2015. Diaz used inspiration from the sea and marine elements, and a touch of 90’s denim to create these playful, beachy looks. The collection showcased sheer pullovers and jackets in which he used intricate fabrics, and denim-inspired dresses and cropped jackets with oversized sleeves and shapeless silhouettes that are loose and relaxed, giving the 90s look a somewhat modern twist. The collection also features bright and dark dresses and outfits that are perfect for spring and summer fun. The color palette was influenced by Ernst Haeckel vintage illustrations of marine elements. He used colors like aqua, mother-of-pearl, apricot, tangerine, and turquoise, just to name a few. He also incorporated textures that were inspired by seaweed, barnacles, and other marine biology, making this collection perfect for the upcoming beach season. Of course, Diaz continued with his signature style, keeping the pieces feminine and romantic with the use of soft fabrics and florals. Diaz’ love for soft fabric, lace, and his classic romantic style are all reasons why women continue to fall in love with his designs. His commitment to keeping his work feminine and flattering makes his Stoked collection perfect for everyday warm weather living.

Keeping Your Look Cool When the Weather Gets Hot
S
ummer is the season many of us dream of all year long, with its long, warm nights and bright, sunny days, and all the super-fun summertime activities that go along with them. But while you’re making the most of summer’s charms, it can sometimes be trickier to stay on top of your beauty game. After all, we all know what a number humidity, chlorine, salt water, UV rays and other summery conditions can do to your hair and skin! Don’t let any of this keep you inside like a vampire though. We’ve got you covered, with these clever tips to keep in mind as you plan your next beach outing or Sunday picnic. We’ll start simple. And by simple, we mean simplifying your look! Do you really want to wear layers of
cakey makeup and fake lashes that backyard BBQ anyway? Make your life easier, while looking effortless and natural with a few key pointers for your face, and you’re good to go! First off, a swish of soft pink or peach blush on your cheeks can go a long way on sticky, wet days when eye makeup has to be more toned down. Nobody wants eyeshadow and sweat running into their eyes nonstop, so instead a more fresh-faced, sun-kissed look could also work for you. Pair the blush with a punchy lip color - bright and cheery, yet harmonious with the blush color - for some kick. Now you’re all set to shine! When the mercury is up, besides not wanting heavy makeup weighing you down, you’ll also want to avoid thick facial creams that will leave you feeling like all the humidity
around is congregating on your face, as you try and casually peruse that farmer’s market. Instead, go for either a fluffy, whipped kind of texture or a soothing mist, depending on your moisture needs. Rose water is a perfect pick-me-up (and smells lovely too!) for the hottest of days, or a mixture of orange oil and water for an energizing, citrusy vibe. Alternatively, try Alba’s Aloe & Green Tea Oil-Free light moisturizer as a nice, smooth drink for your face. While these above suggestions have no SPF protection in them, it’s something to bear in mind in the summer months especially much. Keep reading on for our sunscreen secrets! By now we’ve all heard the warnings of too much sun exposure, despite the longing for a real, golden

Style&Fashion tan. Better to be safe than sorry, and with all of the exciting sun care options available nowadays, we don’t mind! Even save some time and money by mixing it up with products that do more than simply block out those harmful rays. Badger brand has a thorough line of all-natural sunscreens, ranging from lavender-scented and tinted face lotion, to lip balm, bug-repelling sun cream (camping, anyone?), and even small sunscreen sticks to pop into your purse. There’s no excuse now not to cover up! While these will feel fabulous on your skin, you can also follow up with Burt’s Bees Aloe & Linden Flower After Sun Soother for a cooling comedown from a long day outside in the elements. When the heat’s got you down, fresh mists in notes of refreshing lemon and lime, other fruity scents or light floral hints can really enliven your body, mind and spirit. Keep a travel size in your handbag for when you’re on the go or on the road, and the most prone to overheating. Pacifica Beauty has a growing vegan line of slim roll-on perfumes that will do just the trick. Try their Malibu Lemon Blossom, Brazilian Mango Grapefruit, or Tunisian Jasmine Lime for an invigorating and exotic splash of instant coolness. Now you can beat the heat from all angles, and are prepared for whatever the season may bring!

ome people have always worn sneakers in their every day lives because they are comfortable and go well with any outfit, but sneakers were not considered fashionable back in the day. However, this has changed
over the past few years. From high-end to streetwear cultures, elegant to casual styles, sneakers have taken the spotlight in pretty much every corner of the fashion world. This statement is strongly proven in most of the fashion capital cities like New York, Paris, London and Milan. Fashion trends spread so quickly these day due to the internet and social media. When one thing is trending in one place it only takes minutes for it to spread all over the world. So it’s safe to say that you will probably notice the sneaker trend almost anywhere.

or even Thailand in general, the sneakers game has only just begun. In the past, sneakers were only fashionable amongst a specific group of people. You would rarely see people wearing them in their everyday lives because they were not considered formal or stylish by any means. I believe that the sneaker trend in Bangkok has been greatly influenced, not only because they are popular all around the world, or that they are on the top list of fashion bloggers and celebrities’ ‘must-have items’, or even that you are constantly seeing them pop up on your social media news feeds, but because of the comfortable feeling they give and how we can easily ‘kick it in style’ with pretty much any type of outfit. Additionally, the healthy lifestyle trend has become a hot topic, sports have become more popular, and athletes have been getting more attention from the public, especially from the young generations. These cultural influences are reasons why sneakers are the new big trend in Bangkok.

Is delaying your first child really such a bad idea? by Paulina Gueorguieva
N
relatives and peers all put pressure on women in their early 30s. But is it really such a bad
decision to delay the decision of having a first child? It’s all over the news and feature magazines - the average age of US women having their first child has increased from 24.9 years in 2000 to 26.3 years in 2014, which is the largest increase compared to previous decades. These are the statistical facts behind what is relatively known as a modern trend among more educated, working women in most of the developed world. Meet Sarah, she is 29, a senior consultant at one of the top financial companies in the world and still single and without a child. The reasons behind that decision may vary but still prevailing is the financial insecurity and the priority of having a successful career first. At least that is what a research conducted among by University of Iowa showing the answers of 440 women shows. Although the US is far behind countries such as Greece where the average age of women having their first child has reached 30 years, researchers predict that the trend will continue in the upcoming years. What the rough numbers don’t tell is actually a good news the statistical increase in the mean average is partially because of the drop in teen unplanned pregnancies . Is it true? I thought Oil was for cooking? BY NADIA BERCOVICH
SSUMMER SKINCARE omebody tell me the truth! There is so much information out there about which oils are great, and which are basically evil, but what is the difference? and what should we focus on? Natural oils, such as coconut, olive, avocado and even essential oils of all kinds, each have their unique properties, and most of them are useful for various purposes, but the most important factor here that no one seems to mention, is the intuition you have about your own skin.

protect your skin no matter how much your skin sweats. I am a big believer in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is great for all skin types, it keeps the skin bright and luminous. It also helps repair the sun’s damage on the skin, fights in anti-aging, fine lines, and wrinkles. Applying a light Vitamin C serum in the morning alongside your SPF provides a great dose of antioxidants, helping to even out your skin tone while boosting cellular renewal. Always be sure to cleanse and exfoliate your skin. Since you will be using more SPF, your skin will become clogged and dead skin cells will accumulate on the skin’s surface. Using a good natural cleanser like Skin Script foamy Green Tea Cleanser, will give your skin that radiant glow with deep cleansing lemon zest, and the softening properties of yucca. After your deep cleansing, exfoliation should
follow. Aim for at least twice a week to remove dead skin cells. This makes room for healthy, new cells to grow. Acure Organics makes a great sea kelp facial scrub that is suitable for all skin types. Gently scrub your skin, neck and chest area for 1-2 minutes. Then rinse and follow with a light moisturizer. Lastly, get Facials! As an Esthetician, I always recommend that my clients receive advanced skincare treatments every 4-6 weeks. Skincare professionals will show you how you can keep your skin healthy at home with a simple treatment plan. Plus, they are very relaxing too! The focus here is to keep your skin clean, protected, refreshed, and hydrated. Following these simple steps will only enhance your skin in the future. Sun is great in moderation, it feeds our bodies Vitamin D, or the “sunshine vitamin”. It makes us look good, puts us in a great mood, and gives us a healthy glow. Not overdoing it is the key! Respect your skin, and you will look youthful and healthy for years to come.

Types of Eating Disorders Anorexia Nervosa Deliberate starvation and/or highly restrictive eating, persistent fear of gaining weight, distorted body image, continuous dieting, abnormal weight loss, absent or irregular menstruation.
Bulimia Nervosa Binge eating, usually in secret, vomiting after bingeing, abuse of laxatives, diuretics, and diet pills, denial of hunger or consumption of drugs to induce vomiting, compulsive exercise.
Binge Eating Disorder Consumption of large amounts of food in a small period of time followed by physical discomfort and emotional distress, significant abnormal weight gain. Recovery is a process involving small steps forward and often times a few steps back. It involves facing yourself, learning to confront the hard stuff, finding your voice, and learning to love yourself. There is no way to go through the process without feeling. You can’t heal what you don’t feel, as I often tell my clients. I like to think of it as a journey to a healthier, happier you.

Studies show after a night of partying, you are much more likely to skip your workout and try to expunge that crappy hungover feeling with greasy food. I’m not a fan of pre-made drink mixes, even or especially if they have the word skinny on the label. All of these cocktails are made with easy to find ingredients. Feel free to mix and match or make substitutions. If you are underage, the dedicated driver, pregnant, or living alcohol free all of these drinks make excellent mocktails.
This Frozen Pina Colada is inspired by my first summer share in the Hamptons. Without a ride to the beach, my friend Roni and I sat on our blacktop driveway with a bag of tortilla chips, jarred salsa and pina coladas made with Coco Lopez - yikes! This recipe uses coconut water, but read labels carefully because not all brands are created equally. Coconut water should be the only ingredient.
