FROM OUR FOUNDER “Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” Those were the words of the late President John F. Kennedy. A great leader indeed, President Kennedy believed in growth. In looking at life through a different lens and transforming what was good into what was great. In a word, he believed in progress and he did so through repeatedly making the decision to try. At Cuvée, we have always operated under a similar notion. What began more than a decade ago as a way to share my own homes with friends and family has since evolved into a community of likeminded leaders who believe in accomplishments. Since founding the brand in 2006, we’ve grown exponentially in every sense of the word, all because of a simple decision to try. In the traditional sense, Cuvée has grown impressively. Our portfolio has evolved from a small collection of homes to one boasting the finest residences worldwide with the industry’s highest rating of guest satisfaction. As we embark on our next phase of expansion with the launch of Fund IV and uncover new corners of the world like Cuba, Paris and Hawaii (Venturing Beyond, page 70), we hearken back to the values with which we started. We believe in following an investment model that yields incredible success and speaks to a global market, while also building only the most exquisite homes with the finest attention to detail possible. As a community, we also believe that living in and enjoying our homes is just as important as profiting from them. Time and again, our investors tell us that the impact Cuvée has on their lifestyle – on the memories they make with their loved ones – means even more to them than the returns we realize. It’s a sentiment that we take seriously and one that plays into every choice we make. To that end, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of RESERVEX (The Power of X, page 44), a travel and lifestyle platform that will allow Cuvée to touch not hundreds, but thousands of guests who value time well spent and a life well lived. Yet in doing so, we are remaining true to our mission of operating as a boutique, highly personalized brand. With RESERVEX, we are able to send our Keyholders to the world’s most lavish destinations with one simple phone call. What’s more, RESERVEX will offer introductions to the latest in luxury products and goods, as well as unparalleled access to Cuvée owned and managed properties. Keyholders will also enjoy unique, completely customized experiences on each journey they take with RESERVEX. Think of it as Cuvée, raised to a greater power. Similarly, Cuvée has advanced its presence within the community. What began as a decision to try eight years ago has since grown into Flight to Luxury (page 67), an evening to rival all others that, since its inception, has raised over $5 million for Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. We hope you’ll join us on September 15th as we roll out the red carpet and open our hearts to hit a record breaking $1.7 million in revenue this year. As we begin a new year filled with change, growth and accomplishments, we value our Cuvée community more than ever. Because of you, we make the decision to try, setting higher standards each and every day. Because of you, we have pushed the boundaries of what is possible and have created a brand that enriches our lives in so many ways. Because of you, we are Cuvée. Gratefully yours, Larry Mueller

ACCOUTREMENT: LICENSE TO THRILL

Aston Martin doesn’t believe that its legendary wheels should be the only means of transportation for its discerning audience. Hence the British automotive company has teamed up with the Dutch-based firm Quintessence Yachts to present the first powerboat to bear the Aston Martin name – the AM37. The 37-foot watercraft comes with three engine options: two powerful 520-horsepower engines that push the yacht to 52 knots (60 mph), a pair of 370-horsepower diesel engines, or 430-horsepower gas engines. You also can shut out the elements and invite more privacy to your cruise with the clever remote-controlled sliding deck made of three carbon-fiber panels that can cover the entire cockpit. “It’s true that a beautiful, simple shape is critical to a product’s success but it must also have drama, which is provided by surface language, proportions and through the choice of exciting materials,” Aston Martin chief creative officer Marek Reichmann says. “The new powerboat represents the ideal combination of luxurious and technical materials, generating a powerful yet understated finished product.” A digital interface for navigation and control systems oversees electric anchors as well as the retractable sliding deck and swimming platform. And the pièce de résistance? Fingerprint recognition so that no one else can man the vessel. Somewhere, the writers for the next Bond film are finding a maritime scene or two for 007. + More at quintessenceyachts.com +

BEAUTIFULLY PLATED

Much like the tony mountain getaway in which it resides, the Aspen Art Museum needs to be seen to be believed. It’s a stunning, state-of-the-art facility that attracts some of the most celebrated talent from around the globe. Case in point? The latest exhibit showcasing Julian Schnabel’s Plate Paintings [1978-86]. An artist who exploded onto the scene in the 1980s, Schnabel’s large-scale works set on broken ceramic plates have received international media attention for decades. Today, the exhibition (which runs through President’s Day) is the first museum presentation to focus on the renowned American artist’s now culturally iconic plate paintings. The series reveals Schnabel’s interest in material experimentation, the physicality of surface and the relationship between the figure and abstraction. His AAM show includes a concise survey of these works—from the artist’s first plate painting, The Patients and the Doctors (1978), through The Walk Home (1985).

A coup for art lovers visiting the Aspen area, the inherent fragility and scale of the paintings alone make the exhibit a rarity. Add in their wide dispersion among museums and collectors, and it’s not surprising that the showcase is amongst the art world’s most lauded. Then again, what Aspen wants, Aspen usually gets.

FALCON CREST

French aircraft manufacturer Dassault Falcon just made flying into your Cuvée destination that much better with the release of its new 8X model. Stretching more than 42 feet, it features the longest cabin of any Dassault Falcon jet and is equipped with 32 oversized windows for plenty of natural light. As one would expect, it’s fully customizable with more than 30 configurations for the galley location, lounge and seating areas, as well as modernized layout options for the lavatory and shower. Derived from its 7X predecessor, the 8X has a range of over 7,400 miles with a trio of jet engines that have been upgraded to the Pratt and Whitney Canada PW307D, which, all in all, boost fuel efficiency by 35 percent compared to competing aircraft. Starting at $58 million, the 8X is designed for the safest of landings on short runways and steep approaches – think London City Airport, Telluride, Aspen and Gstaad. HARVEST BY KELLY LIKEN

She’s a James Beard Award nominee, a Top Chef Bravo TV alum and a Food Network Iron Chef competitor. Now, her newest restaurant concept just outside of Vail is tempting all sorts of taste buds. Harvest By Kelly Liken recently opened to rave reviews and while Liken is no stranger to delectable and thoughtful creations sourced from local farmers, her latest eatery ups the dining ante. “I wanted to create an approachable and inclusive community concept that really focuses on seasonal Colorado cuisine,” says Liken. “While Harvest still offers the elevated service and refined hospitality that Restaurant Kelly Liken was known for, this is my version of home cooking – a gathering spot for the Vail community that is affordable and creative without pretense.” Liken’s husband and restaurant partner, Rick Colomitz, has crafted the beverage program with a heavy emphasis on Coloradocentric beer, cocktails and coffee. It also offers a unique wine program that profiles local vineyards and small-production, family-owned labels throughout the world. Also on the premises and open all day is The Pantry, a coffee bar and grab-and-go market offering fresh smoothies and juices, sandwiches, salads and a rotating selection of coffee from Colorado roasters. + More at harvestvail.com +

ACCOUTREMENT:

RANCH HANDS

It looks like Ford is getting out of Dodge. Beloved designer and filmmaker Tom Ford is selling his 20,000-acre ranch just outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the Galisteo Basin for $75 million. Cerro Pelon Ranch is the one-of-a-kind property that one might expect from Ford, with an ultramodern and minimalist concrete and glass residence that appears to float on a lake-sized reflecting pool, designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The jaw dropping main house is accompanied by a second Marmol Radziner-designed compound replete with two private guest houses, the home of the ranch manager and equestrian facilities. The horses have it pretty good here too with a state-of-the-art barn comprised of eight stalls and two circular riding rings. Several other residences and buildings dot the property for ranch hands and other staff with numerous warehouses for equipment. The director in Ford also leaves behind a Western movie town originally built as a set for the film Silverado in 1985 and later expanded, upgraded and frequently leased out for television shows and feature films (Lonesome Dove, All the Pretty Horses, 3:10 to Yuma and Thor among them). To top it off, there’s a fenced-in tennis court as well as an airstrip and hangar for quick and convenient escapes. + More at kevinbobolskygroup.com +

CHEF DU JOUR:

HUALALAI ESTATE, BIG ISLAND HAWAII The jet ride across the Pacific to Cuvée’s Hualalai Estate on the Big Island lends itself to some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Yet the blissful anticipation for your upcoming settlement into paradise doesn’t stop with ocean views and opulent surroundings. In fact, it begins and ends with spectacular fare and libations. One of the countless elements that makes a Cuvée stay such an unrivaled experience is its attention to culinary detail. Naturally, Cuvée’s private chefs, Katherine Louie and David Paul, possess the gastronomic prowess to make you feel like Hawaiian royalty. “The Cuvée guest can and should expect the highest standards in quality and service. From fine crystal stemware, gold rimmed china, polished silverware and Frette linens to food that is visually beautiful, full of flavor and professionally presented,” Chef David explains. “Few, if any personal chefs on the Big Island, take the dining experience to the level that Cuvée does.” At your disposal are fresh fish, locally raised meats, fruits, vegetables and herbs coupled with fresh pasta, hand thrown pizza, homemade bread and desserts. Beginning with the traditional welcome drink, which could be the chef’s heavenly lilikoi and coconut mojito or a tropical margarita, the menu is entirely customizable. “The most popular request from Cuvée guests is locally sourced fresh fish as an appetizer. Think blackened seared ahi smoke bowls drizzled with wasabi shoyu butter sauce on a bed of watercress slaw, topped with pickled ginger,” Chef Katherine reveals. “I also offer a variety of different cuisines including Asian, Latin, Indian, Mediterranean, Italian and American barbeque.” Chef David’s arsenal mirrors that of Louie’s. “I focus on blending menu items from all different styles including Hawaiian Regional, South American, Japanese, French, Italian, Thai and Indian along with my New American style of cooking,” he explains. Most guests that come to Hualalai are in search of something different and exotic yet not too far out of their culinary palate. That works well for me, and it gives me the opportunity to create meals that are bright in flavors, textures and color.” Depending on the size of your party and what’s required, you may encounter the assistance of one of the chefs or both. “Katherine and I work together often. She has a special touch with décor and interacting with the guests while I focus on the menu, cooking, plating and service,” Chef David says.

22

VENTURES WINTER I SPRING 2017

So, what can you expect for a typical meal? Two appetizers are standard, followed by a soup or salad before giving way to your pre-selected entrée with a fresh vegetable, incredible side dish and sauce. Both chefs bake their own bread, with Chef Katherine featuring her “Almost Famous” Caramelized Maui Onion Rolls. “One of the more popular dining experiences is what I call a duo menu, where I pair a course based on two items that complement each other, such as soup and salad, fish and meat, and a creamy dessert with something crisp, or a hot and cold offering in each category,” Chef David details. As with most Cuvée experiences, it’s no accident that the menus are designed to create lasting memories. In Hawaii, you’re likely to come across the Toy Box Tomato Salad with assorted heirloom and baby tomatoes, lemon juice, honey, cucumber, Serrano chilies, mint, cilantro and saffron oil, finished with saffron salt. Or perhaps you’ll fall in love with the sliced tuna topped with slivers of garlic, jalapeno chili, cilantro and finished with oak aged soy sauce, extra virgin olive oil, lime juice with sweet mirin and smoke salt. Chef Katherine’s signature dish is sesame and garlic-crusted fresh catch seafood with ginger lime sauce – which is the featured recipe she used when she won the local Iron Chef Competition. Meanwhile, expect Chef David to tempt you with Kona coffee roasted rack of lamb with garden vegetables and creamy Yukon Gold buttered potatoes. This dish was a mainstay at his Lahaina Grill and has been featured in dozens of national magazines. Like Cuvée’s Hualalai Estate, the fare is beautiful, thoughtful and one of a kind. Mai e‘ai!

Getting to Know Them… Both chefs hail from a breed that instantly makes them Cuvée quality. CHEF DAVID PAUL Chef David is the proud proprietor of his own line of signature restaurants in Hawaii, as well as his eponymous personal chef and catering company. His brand is inspired by his travels to Mexico, France and Japan where he studied eclectic international cuisine. What’s more, he apprenticed under the guidance of Max Mercier, the well-known chef and owner of Le Parisian Restaurant. CHEF KATHERINE LOUIE For Chef Katherine Louie, growing up in the thick of San Francisco’s rich culinary scene paved the way for her success, both in the kitchen and on television. Currently, she has a featured cooking segment called “Fresh Catch” on the internationally syndicated Pacific Blues, which airs in 220 markets. “The show just got renewed for season three and filming will begin sometime this winter,“ she explains. “My producer – Emmy award winner Ken Corday – just announced that he would like to produce a spin-off series and offered me my own cooking show.”

LINKS: DIAMANTE CABO SAN LUCAS Los Cabos, Mexico boasts such an immaculate collection of golf courses that even the most disastrous 18-hole outing couldn’t possibly overshadow the stunning ocean views and sun-kissed weather. With some of the finest courses that the sport has to offer, Diamante Cabo San Lucas stands tall amongst the crowd. We sat down with the club’s developer, Ken Jowdy, to see what’s par for the course when swinging for the flags at Diamante.

The Dunes Course, designed by Davis Love III, is considered to be one of the greatest courses anywhere in the world. Why? Nestled within these massive dunes on the Pacific coast of Baja, it gives you the feeling that you could be in Ireland or Scotland – there’s certainly nothing like this golf landscape anywhere else in Cabo. We were one of the first resorts to build on the Pacific side (circa 2014) so this untouched land served as an incredible natural canvas for a modern day course. Add the sunny weather and the Dunes Course is a very special golf experience.

What’s your favorite hole on the Dunes Course? I like the 4th hole because you can play it so many different ways and I really appreciate the options to it. Most golfers, however, prefer our 15th, 16th and 17th holes. The 15th is the most natural link-style golf hole that we have and all three holes have that quintessential ocean view because they cut down towards the water.

How did the relationship with Diamante and Davis Love III come about? Davis and I have known each other since we were very young – just out of college. When the Diamante opportunity presented itself, the first person that I thought of to design the Dunes Course was Davis. He was the natural choice.

Diamante’s newest course is El Cardonal, designed by none other than Tiger Woods. How does this course play and how did Tiger become involved? The partnership with Tiger originated through a mutual acquaintance. I met with his team and spent a lot of time with him personally to really understand his design philosophy. Ultimately, it totally fit with what we were trying to do as a complement to the Dunes Course, which was great. We want to make golf fun and playable for the majority of our guests, while still making it challenging for the best golfers in the world. Tiger agrees with that. He has a great interest in growing the game – in making people want to go out and play. With El Cardonal, the average golfer will have a good time and the very good golfer will appreciate the subtleties and difficulties of the course.

What’s your favorite hole on El Cardonal? I like the 5th hole with its wide fairway and the various options that you have at your disposal. The hole puts a premium on your second shot, which a lot of the holes at El Cardonal do. From a design standpoint, it’s at the lower part of the course near the ocean and it overcame some logistical challenges when designing it. The fact that it resulted in such a nice hole elevates it in my mind because of the initial obstacles.

How does Diamante as a whole differ from other golfing experiences in Cabo? Cabo is a premier destination for the golfing elite and aficionados, so we’re not the only course here that’s worth playing. Having said this, the landscape that we feature and the service that we offer our guests are the two factors that make Diamante different from the others.

GOOD SPIRITS: GENTRY BOURBON He hails from an impressive lineage of fine Charleston, South Carolina gentlemen, with a passion for thoroughbred race horses, real estate, hospitality and bourbon. So when Colorado State alum John David Madison (of Bravo’s hit reality show Southern Charm) launched Gentry Bourbon, it all made perfect sense. We sat down with the rye entrepreneur for a glass of the good stuff and a look inside the newest, up-and-coming bourbon label from the man known as “JD.”

CV: What was the inspiration behind launching Gentry Bourbon, and why bourbon as opposed to vodka, tequila or gin? JD: The inspiration all along has been honoring my grandfather Gentry’s legacy (for which the brand is named) and his love of horses and bourbon. His passions were passed on to my father and then down to me. My father and I worked closely together on Gentry and the final product reflects that. In our family, it could only be bourbon. It’s what we drink when we gather together. It always has been and always will be.

CV: Were there any concerns about bringing a new bourbon into the south or did that work to your advantage with your longtime Charlestonian background? JD: We weren’t overly concerned because we did our homework first. That said, as with many things, we try to keep it simple. We created a bourbon that we love and that others truly enjoy. With Charleston being our home, it was the perfect place to launch. In recent years, it’s also been deemed Conde Nast’s Traveler’s number one destination in the world, so we hope that as people visit, they take Gentry home and share it with their families and friends. Meanwhile, we are trying to take the brand into more states and just recently launched in Colorado.

CV: We’re bourbon connoisseurs. Tell us, why Gentry? JD: Just like a fine wine, Gentry has a unique finish and true depth and complexity on the palate. It has the traditional characteristics of a premium-aged bourbon, including oak and vanilla, with just a hint of green apple. It is very rare and leaves you wanting more. Essentially, Gentry drinks like a 21-year old bourbon, which is derived from our distilling and aging process.

CV: How do you drink it? Neat? On the rocks? Mixed into a cocktail? JD: I’m a man who has bourbon a lot of different ways. If by the fire with the family, I drink it neat. If I’m out with friends on the boat, I have it on the rocks. If I’m at a bar, I will gladly taste a signature cocktail that the bartender has created.

CV: What’s next for Gentry Bourbon? JD: Since we just launched in Colorado, we want to spread through the state. This year, we begin tackling Georgia. We want to gain at least four states in 2017, and hopefully spread across the world in the next five years. Having just gotten back from Ireland, I’ve also recognized that as a prime market that fits well with our brand and culture.

CV: What’s the affiliation with Larry Mueller and Cuvée? JD: I was introduced to Cuvée while staying at one of their gorgeous homes in Vail. My father and I were there on a ski trip and the service and staff were fabulous. Through the team, I met Larry and we hit it off. We both enjoy a good laugh, getting the most out of life and staying in the best properties around the world. + More at gentrybourbon.com

CULTURE CLUB: TUSCANY

TWENTY-TWO MILES SOUTH OF FLORENCE in the Italian region of Tuscany sits a quaint, country hillside town rich in history and tradition. Welcome to Castellina, Chianti. It is here in the heart of the region where native Mario Cappelletti and his wife Claire preside over La Bottega, the stunning art gallery and a living museum of Tuscan art. The Cappelletti’s wide collection of paintings and sculptures, both contemporary and dating back to the end of the 1800s and early 1900s, has served as inspiration and décor for Cuvée’s nearby Tuscan Farmhouse Estate as well as its Villa Laura property. With more than 2,500 clients worldwide in over 40 different countries, La Bottega extends its dozens of artists and their catalogue of more than 800 art pieces through the gallery’s constant development of finding new ways of exhibiting its work. Since 2013, La Bottega has been celebrating its “Tuscan Art on Tour,” a mobile venture to transport the art and the touch of the gallery abroad, bringing a wide selection of paintings around Europe and to America through its US base in Chicago. All of this success and range stem from the simple strategy that Mario Cappelletti has abided by since he and Claire opened La Bottega in 1989. “My main interest in my collaboration with these local artists is to find both quality and authenticity,” he explains. “I believe this commonality is what speaks to the atmosphere, the colors and the sensations of being in Tuscany, which can sometimes be found in the impressionistic style of a certain landscape or maybe in the warm light of an abstract painting.” Integrating Mario’s love for his homeland with his undying passion for antiques and crafts, La Bottega has been transformed into an artistic epicenter for local talent and authenticity with a stellar reputation. It’s an accomplishment that isn’t lost on Cappelletti, “I am very satisfied that our work has been exported all over the world,” he begins. “This is work that belongs to my land and is the result of being in a place like Castellina in Chianti where people from all over the world come with the right spirit to find joy and beauty in their travels.” With Cuvée known for its discerning taste and art collections to match, the partnership is quite the nod to Mario and Claire Cappelletti’s decades of work. His instincts in assembling a trove of craftsmanship and artistry throughout the brand’s Italian properties is, in a sense, art itself.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH: DINING IN LOS CABOS

The sunsets, the sea, the endless stretches of pristine sand – Los Cabos is home to several of Cuvée’s most stunning properties. From La Casita and La Terraza in Palmilla’s Villas del Mar community to the stately Hacienda property in the heart of Cabo San Lucas, there’s a home for every type of traveler. With them come state-of-the-art gourmet kitchens and private chefs ready to prepare exquisite meals. Yet if you do find yourself outside the Cuvée confines, there are plenty of foodie adventures to be had. Los Cabos plays host to an unsuspecting but incomparable dining scene. For epic views and crashing waves, head into Cabo San Lucas and through the tunnel that leads to The Resort at Pedregal. There, you’ll find two distinctive dining options – El Farallon and Don Manuel’s. The former is one of the region’s most lauded and is, quite literally, tucked into the seaside cliffs. Executive Chef Gustavo Pinet sets the best selection of local catch on mounds of shaved ice, as fish experts guide you through the menu with an old-fashioned scale that weighs each choice. The latter, Don Manuel’s, offers seaside dining that is anything but expected Mexican fare. Think reimagined classics like pork belly and sea bass, fresh, locally sourced ingredients and a creative menu of craft cocktails.

VENTURES WINTER I SPRING 2017

On the other side of the corridor, towards old town San Jose del Cabo, sits a tucked away corner replete with unlikely gastronomic superstars. What appears at first glance to be drab outskirts on the wrong side of the tracks, is in fact a growing hub of coveted al fresco eateries. The most notable and established of the bunch is Flora Farms. Few places in the world rival the esoteric beauty that the 10 stunning acres evoke. Part organic farm, part restaurant, part bar, part retail (there’s even a James Perse concept store on property), part inn and pure magic. Make a reservation for brunch at Flora’s Field Kitchen or head over for a craft cocktail at The Farm Bar. Hint – opt for the Farm Julep, made with fresh watermelon juice. Dinners on property are sublime, with everything from pork chops to pizza to a seasonal vegetable platter that’s out of this world. If you want to extend your stay, book one of the private Culinary Cottages, where guests can revel in the lap of charming luxury as they enjoy the property’s private quarters, on-site cooking classes, a spa garden and swimming pool. Nearby is Acre, another farm-to-table joint that’s as ambient as its neighboring Flora Farms, yet with its own distinctive personality. The restaurant and cocktail bar boast chic, modern décor and food and beverage offerings that you’re more apt to see in the confines of Los Angeles or New York than the middle of a 25-acre farm in rural Mexico. The next phase for the expansive property will be on-site treehouse accommodations, available for guest occupancy later this fall. Within the same vicinity is the third and most understated (yet equally delicious) of the organic collective. Huerta Los Tamarindos is a property dating back to the 19th century and is both authentic and picturesque. Owned and run by locals, it’s not quite as opulent as its neighbors, yet dishes up tasty food in a naturally stunning setting. Using 100 percent organic produce, the restaurant also offers cooking classes and a small marketplace. Back in old San Jose del Cabo, plenty of options abound – from traditional Mexican at Jasmin to creative Mexican at Mi Casa. Also try Nik San in the Shops at Palmilla for the area’s best sushi and Japanese food.

ISLAND LIVING How Cuvée transformed a dated hillside home into the most opulent villa on the island of St. Barths

REIGN • SUMMER 2016

SOME PROPERTIES EXCEED EVEN THE LOFTIEST EXPECTATIONS. They ignite the senses and defy every notion of what a home most typically is. Simply put, they are art. Vue de Rêves, the most recent and perhaps most spectacular villa in Cuvée’s portfolio, is one such home. Taking the lessons learned from more than two decades of luxury real estate development and renovation, founder Larry Mueller’s vision was to build a space not on its surroundings but instead, around them. A space that would encapsulate everything the Cuvée brand had become – luxurious, distinctive, thoughtful and unrivaled.

When I first set eyes on this property, I knew it would become our piece

VENTURES I WINTER 2016-2017

“When I first set eyes on this property, I knew it would become our piece de resistance,” Mueller explains. “It was an extremely dated home, but on perhaps the most spectacular piece of land I had ever seen. With views of the Baie de St. Jean and Nikki Beach at every turn, it was the canvas of our dreams.” With that, the aptly named Vue de Rêves (or View of Dreams) began to take shape. Yet much like the very model that is Cuvée, the construction process was anything but average. While the island of St. Barths is extremely beautiful, it is also extremely insulated, translating to architecture that is homogenous. Builders and designers native to the island all possess a relatively narrow perspective of the craft, with blueprints around St. Barths looking and feeling similar from one to the next. Vue de Rêves is anything but. From concept to completion, the land itself guided the home’s development and design. Acutely aware of the property’s potential, Cuvée purchased Vue de Rêves (which sits on almost an acre of land) in 2013. Yet it remained untouched for nearly eighteen months while Mueller and his guests lived in the space, gaining a genuine understanding of how it functioned. The team ensconced themselves in the subtleties of the home, paying particular attention to how light enters each area, from sunrise to sunset and every hour in between. The way the natural glow moved throughout the space dictated the placement of windows, the direction of furnishings and even the division of rooms themselves. Every detail – from sight to smell to sound – impacted the experience. It’s a notion that Mueller calls “designing as you go” and it personifies the very essence of the company’s growing real estate portfolio. “We weren’t looking to simply

We wanted this home to speak to all of the senses – from the way the breeze feels on the skin to the way the crashing waves sound – this was about so much more than great design.

renovate a luxury home. We wanted to create a piece of art that was built to enhance the property’s natural assets,” he says. “It took us three years because for the first half of the process, we were absorbing the space and all that it was. It takes a very intimate level of understanding in order to get it right and with Vue de Rêves, we did that.” One of the most dramatic examples of this design philosophy is the expansive infinity pool. “The property has the island’s most incredible views of the Baie de St. Jean. As the water breaks, the colors morph – blues, turquoise, aqua – they’re colors you’ve never seen before and they change every day,” he describes. “We wanted the home’s swimming pool to reflect this.” To do so, the Cuvée design team utilized a unique stone that would mimic the sea below, spending months hand selecting and hand laying each and every piece. The end result is one stunning body of water perched on top of another, with a layout that acutely complements the colors from below. Backdropped by a rushing natural stone waterfall, the pool also incorporates a sunken lounge and fire feature (the island’s first) built in such a way that guests feel as though they are lounging on top of the sea. To continue the al fresco opulence while maintaining the home’s Caribbean charm, the team imported a very rare Brazilian wood – the only in existence that is resistant to high humidity – and built a 4,000 square-foot deck.

VUE DE RÊVES 40

VENTURES I WINTER 2016-2017

We create spaces that are meaningful and that appeal to the senses. Homes that integrate the very best artisans in the world in a way that could never be emulated. The end result is a property that is art. – Larry Mueller

“The ability to have a real wood deck juxtaposed against the natural stone of the pool allowed us to create warmth in the midst of an otherwise contemporary space, something that was paramount to preserving the home’s authenticity,” Mueller says. “We wanted this home to speak to all of the senses – from the way the breeze feels on the skin to the way the crashing waves sound – this was about so much more than great design.” Even the fragrance is special. With a property that is thirty years old, mature vegetation and incredible flowers gave the team a setting that could never be replicated in newer construction sites. Because the project was selected for its unique topography and privacy, building an interior that flowed naturally into its exterior was a top priority. In particular, the wine cave at Vue de Rêves is a sight to behold, and one that was constructed using a painstaking yet remarkable approach. The home, which is built into the hillside, afforded access to rare and beautiful natural granite. Instead of building over it, Mueller and his team embraced the elevation itself as the backdrop, enclosing the area in glass and adding modern temperature controls within. “Because it’s a true, natural rock, water seeps out which creates brilliant colors. It takes a wine cave that would be extraordinary in its own right and magnifies it with organic beauty.” Likewise, the kitchen at Vue de Rêves is both rare and impressive. The Cuvée team used the island’s French influences and casual Caribbean vibe to design a culinary space like no other. Contemporary cabinets were handmade in Portugal, while La Cornue appliances, all of which are constructed piece by piece in Bordeaux, serve as show-stopping accoutrement. A process that took years to complete, the La Cornue craftsman (who refer to themselves as culinary architects) believe in an old world approach to new world cuisine, and their line is privy to the world’s most exquisite kitchens.

To continue the outside-in appeal, Mueller and the Cuvée design team built an entry that would evoke an appropriate first impression for an estate like Vue de Rêves. Upon approach, a waterfall feature flows into a saltwater basin. Above it, a bridge was constructed which guests walk across to enter the space. Once inside, the home boasts five master en suites on four different levels, ensuring maximum privacy for its guests. Naturally, each room was designed to optimize its adjacent al fresco spaces – from outdoor garden showers to a spa and yoga pavilion in the Upper Guest Villa. “We created very sensual spaces, all based around the direction of the room, the way the sunlight beams in and the way the breezes flow,” Mueller explains. “These aren’t amenities one could add from a simple blueprint. It took living in the space and developing a true understanding of its nuances to deliver such unique and thoughtfully designed elements.” Thoughtful indeed, even the fabrics and materials throughout Vue de Rêves were selected with great intention. In fact, sailcloth from a local St. Barths company and cabling like that of a boat’s mast were made into sun shades under which guests can relax – a far cry from even the most luxurious umbrellas. It’s details such as this that took a once dated home and transformed it into the most remarkable piece of architecture on the island, and the prize of Cuvée’s ornamented portfolio. “Vue de Rêves really does personify who we are and what we do. Cuvée doesn’t churn out cookie cutter renovations. We create spaces that are meaningful and that appeal to the senses. Homes that integrate the very best artisans in the world in a way that could never be emulated,” Mueller finishes. “The end result is a property that is art. One that remains in your memory for years to come. That’s what our homes mean to us and what we hope they will become for our guests.”

The power of X

Unveiling Cuvée’s elite RESERVE X Program

Since its inception, Cuvée has been rooted in the idea of a life well lived. From its exquisite homes that span the globe, to its touted Flight to Luxury fundraiser, the company believes in doing one thing and doing it well – delivering remarkable luxury experiences that will linger in the memory for years to come. Cuvée’s most recent offering, RESERVEX, is the evolution and in many ways, encapsulation, of its decade long passion for fine living. “We were humbled by the notion that our guests and partners believed we could bring them these experiences in a way that no one else in the market could. RESERVEX elevates our travel experiences to a new level, reaching far beyond the confines of a vacation.” Indeed, the company’s debut of RESERVEX is one that comes on the heels of anticipation from its community – a community that demands the very best of the best. From private jet access to fine watches, spirits and other luxury goods, Cuvée is delivering a highly curated selection of the good life, along with premier access to the company’s property portfolio and a deep commitment to philanthropy. “Just as important as the experiences we create are the people we create them with,” Mueller continues. “Our community brings together likeminded people who appreciate luxury and are dedicated to success – in business, in family and in life. The connections made through Cuvée and now, RESERVEX, are priceless.” Much like Cuvée’s private equity investment group, RESERVEX is offered by invitation only, ensuring that the who is just as thoughtful as the what. When selecting the RESERVEX Keyholders, Mueller and his Cuvée cohorts are extremely intentional. “These are individuals who work hard and play hard. They share similar values and believe in holding themselves accountable to the highest possible standards,” he attests. “Ultimately, they rest easy knowing that when they engage with our brand, they will be in very good company.” Naturally, the benefits of RESERVEX are impressive, starting with unparalleled access to the Cuvée property portfolio. From St. Barths to Aspen to Tuscany, RESERVEX Keyholders enjoy preferred rental access over peak holidays and generous discounts on last minute stays. What’s more, each time an individual from the RESERVEX community visits a Cuvée residence, they take pleasure in a personalized, authentic experience that will set their trip apart from any other they’ve taken. These highly curated experiences are truly one-of-a-kind. Think deep sea fishing off the coast of Los Cabos with a world champion guide, a catamaran cruise with Cuvée’s favorite Captain Miguel in St. Barths followed by a beachfront dinner prepared by a celebrity chef, or a private hula lesson in Hawaii with Hoku, Cuvée’s destination host. The possibilities are endless and in grand Cuvée fashion, the sky is the limit.

“RESERVEX is about access and privileges. Whatever your interests are, we’ll make sure that we do much more than help plan a vacation. We’ll create unforgettable experiences that will speak to the senses.” - Larry Mueller Likewise, Keyholders also receive exclusive invitations to Cuvée’s annual gala – a weeklong trip to one of the company’s worldwide locales, with a once-in-a-lifetime itinerary to match. Past galas have seen the community traveling to the reaches of Tuscany, St. Barths and London (during the 2012 Olympic games). The 2017 iteration will take gala-goers to South Africa, where they’ll spend three nights in Cape Town followed by a four-night African safari at the uber luxe Singita property. Yet the access doesn’t stop there. The RESERVEX crew has the opportunity to join Cuvée on its annual judging trek for Robb Report’s Car of the Year where slipping behind the wheel of the world’s finest (and fastest) automobiles is on the agenda, along with distinctive culinary and wine experiences. The Keyholders are also granted access to the most rarified events across the globe – from the 2018 Ryder Cup in the outskirts of Versailles, France to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics – and all in the manner for which Cuvée is known. Namely, luxurious, distinctive and flawless.

spirits to tech gadgets, artisan foods, tools and toys are included with each delivery. “It’s about the art of discovery – many of us look forward to this box for months,” Mueller says. Additionally, RESERVEX delivers access to Cuvée’s annual allotment of organic extra virgin olive oil grown at its Tuscan Farmhouse as well as a shipment of its highly rated Chianti Classico wine. Yet perhaps most importantly is RESERVEX’s tie to the non-profit community. In addition to being a VIP guest at Cuvée’s September Flight to Luxury fundraiser (which raises more than $1.2 million annually for Boys & Girls Clubs), the company is donating a percentage of each RESERVEX stay back to the guest’s charity of choice. A concept that’s relatively unheard of in the luxury travel space, and one that Cuvée prides itself on. “Everything we do is about embracing our community. We believe in doing well by doing good,” Mueller affirms. “It’s a credo that has carried us far and as we take Cuvée to the next level through RESERVEX, we’re remembering what’s really important to our brand and to our community.” According to Mueller, RESERVEX is a bright part of Cuvée’s future. “It’s our evolution from a private equity fund to a lifestyle brand as well. Think of it as Cuvée raised to a greater power.”

Because getting there is sometimes as important as being there, RESERVEX is offering a personalized program with Delta Private Jets. From highly competitive rates on private and commercial flights to asset management, the partnership was created with Cuvée in mind and is exclusive to the company. Equally impressive is Cuvée’s ability to send its RESERVEX Keyholders to virtually anywhere in the world with the same ease they’ve come to appreciate from the brand. Whether the company owns and manages a property in the region or not, a new alliance with Virtuoso, the preeminent leader in luxury travel, allows Cuvée to access a network of the world’s most lavish destinations. “Our partners have been in business nearly 40 years and are the best of the best. Just like Cuvee’s owned and managed properties, traveling with RESERVEX means that the red carpet treatment is one call away, opening up access to a global travel network,” he explains. “Resorts around the world recognize this partnership and know that its travelers are expecting an elite experience. It ensures a seamless trip with the best possible service.” With a goal of taking the experiences for which it has become known beyond travel, Cuvée is also bringing its Keyholders the latest in luxury goods. Through a close collaboration with Robb Report’s Vices program, Cuvée is curating an ongoing custom gift, each featuring a theme and respective collection of products that will whet the appetite of even the most discerning connoisseurs. EXPLORING

CAPE TOWN C

ape Town, known affectionately as the “Mother City,” is consistently ranked as one of the top five cities in the world to visit by Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines. One of the most beautiful cities in the world, this trendy, artistic hub is an epicenter of fashion, culture and beauty. The Gala will begin by visiting Table Mountain in Cape Town, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The first four experiential days in the country’s capital offer an unrivaled view of the city. Nestled between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and flanked by Table Mountain, travelers will experience everything Cape Town has to offer, from the panoramic views of the mountains, city, and both oceans to scaling Table Mountain by foot or by cable car. “Our guests will have a complete sensory experience – from the views, to the sights, sounds and tastes of the city,” Mueller explains. The gala will allow travelers to revel in Cape Town’s cosmopolitan culture by shopping at the worldfamous Victoria & Albert waterfront, savoring the best culinary delights the country has to offer and exploring South Africa’s renowned winelands in the rolling countryside, sampling the finest vintages of wine. From there, the experiences continue, each more spectacular than the last. Gala-goers will ride the Aerial Cableway for an exhilarating trip to the top of Table Mountain, where they’ll have stunning views of the gorgeous landscape below. Cape Town’s portside harbor is another area to explore – it’s a vibrant place full of excellent shopping, flavorful restaurants, and lively pubs, and is one of the busiest ports in the world. Travelers will also visit Muizenberg Blue Flag Beach. This famous stretch of sand is lined with colorful Victorian “bathing boxes,” a photographer’s dream. Watch surfers catch a wave at Surfer’s Corner, while at Boulders Beach guests will be ensconced in the habitat of a large colony of penguins. That’s right – penguins don’t only live in cold climates! Another excursion is the (totally optional) shark diving experience at Gansbaai, referred to as “Shark Alley” and known as the great white shark capital of the world. Guests are also likely to see other wildlife, like Cape fur seals, Cape gannets, Cape cormorants, southern right whales and dolphins.

hile in Cape Town, our home away from home will be the Silo Hotel, a towering five star space above the V&A Waterfront that was recently named one of the eight best destination hotels by The New York Times. While there, we will also partake in an exclusive midnight Diamond District shopping excursion. Cuvée’s time in Cape Town will also include a private excursion to Robben Island, a former leper colony where Nelson Mandela was held and spent the first 18 of his 27 years in prison. The tour will be led by a former inmate who was incarcerated at the same time as Mandela, allowing guests to walk in their footsteps and hear first-hand about their prison experience. Cape Town is home to some of the world’s best culinary offerings, and Cuvée’s gala attendees will be privy to fine cuisine every step of the way. Oenophiles will appreciate our exclusive wine tasting experience, where the mode of transport is a private helicopter to the Cape Peninsula. Once there, guests will imbibe at the Delaire Graaff and Grand Provence Estate, home to some of South Africa’s noble cultivators and classic wine styles. Cuvée will also visit the famous winemaking region of Stellenbosch, known for its Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux blends, stopping at Ernie Els, Waterford Estate and Van Ryn’s Distillery.

ollowing our Cape Town adventure, we’ll be off for five perfect days on safari, Cuvée-style. In the heart of South Africa’s big cat country, amongst the enormous trees on the banks of the Sand River, gala guests will experience an award-winning excursion with Singita, enjoying exclusive access to the hotelier’s Boulders and Ebony Lodges. The unrivaled trip into the wild will begin with a private charter flight to Singita Sabi Sands, first to Skukuza on an 85-passenger plane, then via caravan in Beechcraft 1900D’s to view the wildlife. Traditionally, the dry winter months (April to October) are best for wildlife viewing, due to the lack of foliage and shorter grass, which encourages the game to concentrate around water sources. On safari, we will enjoy daily game drives with professional guides and trackers, getting an up close view of Africa’s incredible animals, both day and night. Guests may see leopard, lion, rhino, buffalo, elephant, hyena, hippo, nyala, cheetah, wild dogs and various birds. During our safari, we will stay at the Boulders and Ebony Lodges along the banks of the Sands River in Singita’s privately owned reserve on more than 45,000 protected acres. This pristine setting blends perfectly with the lodge, allowing for wildlife and landscape views from every angle for an immersive safari experience.

Singita’s meals juxtapose global and traditional African ingredients. Gala attendees will also have the opportunity for several cultural experiences. We will partake in a transcendent stargazing session, free from light pollution, offering a pristine view of the expansive African sky. From there, a walking safari will find guests tracking animals on foot while exploring the landscape. Also not to be missed are the area’s boutiques and galleries, where original treasures gathered from all corners of the continent abound. Think museumquality prints from some of Africa’s most respected artists, authentic jewelry and carvings created by local craftsman and authentic artifacts.

T

aking Luxury to the Extreme Go big or go home. It’s all or nothing. They’re phrases that reflect a lifestyle that refuses to settle for anything but the very best. Driving a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO in the Mille Miglia, for example, is the ultimate experience for classic Ferrari enthusiasts. Wearing a Richard Mille tourbillon chronograph is the goal of any contemporary high-tech watch collector. Uncorking a bottle of 1961 Château Pétrus is the dream of any discerning oenophile. And for the ultimate outdoorsman, there may be no greater accomplishment than scaling Mount Everest. A similar hierarchy exists in the world of luxury vacation homes and, simply put, Cuvée is the Mount Everest of that industry. Founded by former technology titan Larry Mueller in the fall of 2006, Cuvée is the unequivocal leader because it does what no other player in the market can. The company owns and manages a collection of residences that are held to nearly impossible standards, guaranteeing that a stay in one of their exquisite properties will exponentially outrank a respite at even the finest hotel or private home. No booking and praying that the vacation is up to par. No bait and switch tactics. Instead, the comfort of knowing that the trip will exceed even the loftiest travel expectations. The company’s unique model starts with ownership and exclusive management of every residence in its portfolio. This level of control means that Cuvée intimately understands each property and its surroundings. From there, full-time staff work tirelessly to bring Cuvée homes to a level of perfection that simply does not exist elsewhere in the travel space. From sourcing the most premium and unique building materials in the world, to curating fine local art, to the smallest nuances such as individually selecting each dish and piece of flatware that fills the artisan made cupboards, a Cuvée stay is not a vacation – it’s an experience that completely alters the way its clients look at travel. At its very core, Cuvée is about fine living to the highest possible degree. “Those are the ingredients that create the spectacular,” says Mueller. And, quite frankly, only the most spectacular will do. “The most successful and wealthy people in this world are typically very busy and don’t have many opportunities to get away with the people that they love. When they do, those experieces need to be forever etched in their mind. That’s what Cuvée delivers.”

VUE DE RÊVES

An Industry Explained In a sea of supposed “luxury rental” firms, how does Cuvée truly differentiate itself? Certainly it must be more than superior décor and impressive accessories. Indeed, the boutique travel company remains boutique not by circumstance, but rather, design. “Our portfolio is small because we have no interest in sheer volume. Our values are centered on setting a new standard – on building, renovating and maintaining homes that define luxury to the highest degree – and we do so by closely managing every step of the process,” Mueller explains. “We set out to change the way our clients travel and in many cases, we end up changing the way they live.” The concept is distinctive, if not unheard of. In today’s saturated luxury travel industry there are multiple options for selecting and securing private vacation homes – the primary being booking sites, wholesalers and destination clubs. In the simplest of terms, the internet has made planning luxury vacations – vacations that consumers are sacrificing precious time and resources for in hopes of a positive, memorable experience – quite bewildering. Wholesale booking sites claiming to offer luxury properties tend to have very little knowledge of the homes they are showcasing. The vetting process is loose at best, and while dreamy photos and extravagant claims convince travelers that they are guaranteed the trip of a lifetime, in most cases, those manning these sites have never paid these properties a single visit. All the while, destination clubs claim to protect travelers against this sort of gamble by inviting them to be part of a private, exclusive group of members who have elite access to a portfolio of homes. For initiation fees ranging from $25K to nearly $250K depending on the club, you’ve bought yourself the privilege of renting properties from a smaller pool, with promises of private concierge services, high end amenities, luxury interiors and special member benefits throughout the year. In fact, members must vie for availability during certain times of year, on top of which they pay an additional per-night rate for their stays – a rate that extends above market premium during holidays or peak vacation weeks. What’s more, beyond their initiation fee members must also pay annual dues. Much like their wholesale booking contemporaries, most destination clubs focus on volume. Instead of hand-selecting homes based on superior attributes, the majority of destination clubs are simply collecting dots on a map, signing as many long-term leases as possible in coveted vacation spots and renting them by the night to their member pool. The numbers alone make it impossible for management to have any considerable knowledge of the properties, and more often than not, supposed “on-site concierge” are subcontracted employees with limited training or availability to assist the overwhelming number of members convening in any single destination.

Our portfolio is small because we have no interest in sheer volume. Our values are centered on setting a new standard – on building, renovating and maintaining homes that define luxury to the highest degree. We set out to change the way our clients travel and in many cases, we end up changing the way they live. - Larry Mueller

Unlike vacation clubs, the boutique nature of Cuvée allows the company to focus its attention on each family and their specific requests. Ours have been met and exceeded every time. We are always greeted by a warm host and all the details of our stay are completely outlined ahead of time – great restaurants, excursions, private chefs, wine selections – it’s all at our fingertips. – Carol Solich, Cuvée Investor

The Cuvée Way Cuvée’s approach is the exact opposite. “To us, our homes are individual pieces of art that we spend months, if not years, perfecting,” Mueller explains. “We own and manage very few properties, but they’re the very best in the most desirable locations around the world.” Cuvée has undoubtedly developed a great ability to strategically purchase luxury real estate. Mueller and his team of investors seek the most distinctive residences in the world – those with incomparable views and one-of-a-kind backdrops, with rare locations and superlative history – and they take them over the top in both construction and interior design. Each Cuvée residence is created to be a thoughtful homage to its environment, and a comfortable yet sophisticated reflection of its landscape. Having lived all over the world, Mueller’s sincere appreciation for culture and how it influences design shines through in the entire portfolio. With the help of an in-house designer, nothing in a Cuvée home – from the fabrics to the finishes – is selected without considering how the space will ultimately be enjoyed and experienced. “The renovations go way beyond the taste level and quality of anything else on the market,” Mueller says. Along these lines, every Cuvée property boasts its own dedicated Cuvée Experience Curator who gets to know each guest before they arrive so that their every wish is handled with great care. These full-time team members reside near each property, providing unparalleled knowledge of the area as well as the intricacies of each Cuvée home. While many brands casually stamp the term “concierge” on their amenities list, several have deluded consumers by suggesting that they offer on-demand services and one-on-one attention when the reality is anything but. In this case, Cuvée stands alone. While Cuvée Experience Curators indeed handle what the company considers “the basics” – ensuring the wine cellar is properly stocked with the guest’s preferred varietals, preparing welcome cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres, arranging recreational activities – their services extend far beyond the expected. From a performance by fire dancers on a private beach in Los Cabos, to a surprise ski lesson with an Olympic gold medalist in Vail, these are the ingredients of which a Cuvée trip is made. But don’t just take Mueller’s word for it. In an industry with a notoriously low rate of return on customer satisfaction surveys and an average rating that is, well, exactly that, Cuvée outperforms the pack by leaps and bounds. More than 98 percent of Cuvée guests complete surveys and the company’s average ranking is 4.9 out of 5 stars – a number that is unheard of in hospitality.

Under the Tuscan Sun When Mueller and his team set out to buy a Tuscan villa, they understood that it would not be easy. Italy’s historic estates are all protected, which means any renovation work needs to be done using the same building materials that were used to construct the home centuries prior. What’s more, many are woefully outdated. The Cuvée team inspected more than 200 residences before they found a suitable project – a 600-year-old farmhouse with a modern infrastructure but underwhelming presence. “The home’s potential was completely untapped. It needed true vision to bring it back to its former glory, so that’s what Cuvée did,” said Susan Farrugia, Co-Founder and Chief of Staff.

Situated on a sprawling hillside, complete with a 400-tree olive grove and adjacent to a Chianti Classico vineyard – Cuvee produces estate wines and cold-pressed olive oils, respectively – it also features a courtyard dotted with lemon and orange trees, an organic garden, and a restored chicken coop home to five hens that produce fresh eggs each morning and a rooster named Lorenzo. The five-bedroom residence is enhanced by a gourmet kitchen, an infinity pool, a billiard room and a stone wine cave. The estate also offers unobstructed views of the nearby medieval castle, Vertine. Appropriately, the farmhouse has earned the name La Veduta di Vertine, which means “The View of Vertine” and is rated one of the finest estates in all of Italy. “Guests who stay there enjoy the experience of living on a Tuscan farm, but they also enjoy all the modern amenities of a luxurious private estate,” says Senior Director of Destination Operations, Rita Céullar. “That’s what we do. We take these jewels and turn them into shiny diamonds. We really believe in allowing guests to experience the authenticity of the culture.”

VUE DE RÊVES

Beachfront Living Presently, Cuvée also owns and operates residences in Mexico, St. Barths and Hawaii, but unlike the company’s Italian properties, which had to adhere to rigid national building guidelines, Cuvée’s seaside residences offer the company a chance to break the mold. “When you go to these architecturally narrowly-focused areas, whether it’s St. Barths or Hawaii, design and material selection is very homogenous from one home to the next,” Mueller explains. “Cuvée comes into those environments with a global perspective. We bring in stone and wood, kitchen equipment and bathroom fixtures from all over the world.” Cuvée’s premiere St. Barths residence, which was built in the 1990s and frequented by the Kennedy family and Mariah Carey, was known for its striking location only a few minutes from St. Jean Beach and Gustavia on St. Jean Hillside, as well as its panoramic views of Baie de St. Jean and Eden Rock. “It was one of the best homes on the island,” Mueller says. “It was ideally located with phenomenal views, but was very dated.” “The are two main factors that influence our real estate decisions – potential for profitability and potential for guest enjoyment,” he continues. With Vue de Rêves, both objectives were met in spades. And so in 2013, Cuvée purchased the stunning villa. Yet unlike most investment properties, its owners did not immediately begin renovations. Instead, they visited and lived in the space for nearly 18 months, developing a deep understanding of the home and its intricacies. By experiencing the property first hand, the team was able to determine the best possible plan for its rebuild and renovation. From the natural light to the flow of the ocean breeze, each and every detail influenced the design. It’s a method that is rare in the industry, but one that Mueller prides himself on. “Ultimately, this design-as-you-go philosophy leads to the most thoughtful layouts and most optimal uses of space. It’s always worth taking the time to truly live in and appreciate a home before you begin making major construction and design decisions,” Mueller maintains. Similarly, on the Big Island in Hawaii, Cuvée chose not to work with a local contractor, but brought in its own team of builders and designers. By utilizing materials from all parts of Asia and Indonesia, the company created yet another shining gem. It features an open-air living area accented by a sand-and-ocean motif (including stone floors that are embedded with shells and fossils) and an outdoor living and entertaining space that centers on an infinity pool, spa and fire pit. The home also offers splendid views of the Jack Nicklaus-designed Hualalai golf course, The Four Seasons Resort and the Pacific Ocean. Likewise, Cuvée owns and manages several impressive residences in the Los Cabos, Mexico area, each more opulent than the last. From a private Casita perched above the Sea of Cortez where the team spent months and millions renovating an expansive infinity pool that’s considered the area’s finest, to a beachfront hacienda with picture perfect views of the iconic Cabo San Lucas rock formations, every Cuvée home is as authentic as it is exclusive.

ASPEN CABIN

Rocky Mountain High Naturally, some of Cuvée’s most beautiful properties are in the Denver-based company’s backyard. From the world-famous slopes of Aspen to the private peaks of The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch and the bustling Vail Village, Cuvée owns or manages more than 15 Colorado residences. As its guests have come to expect, these homes are unrivaled in their respective ski enclaves. In particular, Cuvée’s transformation of a 60-year-old Aspen cabin on the town’s most sought after street is an ideal example of the company’s approach to real estate and renovation. Situated along idyllic Willoughby Lane, the unofficial “Park Avenue” of Aspen, the historic log cabin was the perfect blend of elements – from the location directly along the coveted river to the sweeping panoramic views of Aspen Mountain and the effortless charm of its architecture. Yet a small footprint required a mindful and creative solution when it came to bringing the home up to Cuvée’s standards. Maintaining its Swedish style log cabin look, Mueller and his team worked within the existing framework to open up the previously divided space. From there, they quite literally thought outside the box and doubled the usable area by adding a three tiered outdoor kitchen, al fresco dining room, living room and in-ground spa, along with two separate fire features, which all overlook the Roaring Fork River and Aspen ski runs.

VENTURES I WINTER 2016-2017

Peace of Mind In the future, the company plans to expand the property-management side of its business. “The second, third, fourth or fifth homes that wealthy people buy usually create headaches for them because they’re only using them a few weeks a year. I know that when I’m in one of my secondary residences after many months away, I’m usually spending the first week fixing things,” Mueller attests. “Homes are like people. They need to be used and active to be at their best. When you’re in the Cuvée community, we not only manage the home but also improve it. We take care of every touch point and we invest in the senses – what you feel, what you see, what you taste and what you smell. Those are all the little things that make you feel special and it’s those fundamentals that make us different.”

ST. BARTHS GALA

A Sense of Community More than a company, Cuvée is a true community. Its investors, guests, clients and colleagues have formed a family who not only enjoy the company’s residences, but also a shared perspective of a life well-lived. From gatherings across the country to an annual gala held in the most spectacular venues around the world (at the London Olympic Gala in 2012 Cuvée took over the coveted Leed’s Castle, providing guests with VIP tickets to all games’ final events), Cuvée celebrates life to its fullest. The most recent example was its over-the-top soirée in St. Barths. Guests flew in from destinations that spanned the globe to partake in several days of fine fare, libations and entertainment all centered on the recent completion of Vue de Rêves. Indeed, it’s this je ne sais quoi that defines Cuvée. Yet the company’s sense of community extends beyond the bounds of frivolity. Seven years ago, Mueller had the notion to host a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. He gathered around 200 friends and raised roughly $50,000 that year. Fast-forward to 2016, and Flight to Luxury, Cuvée’s signature philanthropic event which is held in private jet hangars and boasts the likes of aerial bartenders, trendsetting fashion shows and a live auction, is Colorado’s most talked about fundraiser. Like Cuvée, Flight to Luxury started small and quickly grew into something significant, having garnered a staggering $5 million since its inception, and more than $1.2 million in 2016 alone. Bold-faced names and altruistic guests (nearly 1,000 of them to be exact) gather to witness what Cuvée does best – enjoying life to its fullest while giving back with meaningful purpose.

A Six Star Future With the highest rated travel company in the industry, staggering returns on real estate investments, the most beautiful homes across the globe and enough prolific experiences to last several lifetimes under his belt, one might assume that Mueller and his Cuvée team are content to rest on their laurels. Yet such an assumption would be naive. For Cuvée, luxury real estate is about much more than balance sheets and bragging rights. “It’s about seeing the potential in a home, uncovering its beauty and transforming it into a piece of art for generations to come,” Mueller explains. “We create architecture and craft experiences that appeal to the senses and remain in your memory forever. That’s what our homes mean to us and what we hope they will become for our guests.”

I was lucky enough to visit Cuvée’s newest property, Vue de Rêves, on St. Barths this past July. I have traveled all over the world and have experienced the very best in luxury and I can emphatically state that Cuvée is the Michelangelo of art and the Mount Everest for the ultimate thrill-seeker. REPORT CARD Scoring points behind the wheel with Robb Report It’s always a star-studded weekend with globally renowned brands like Dom Perignon and watchmaker Ulysse Nardin rubbing elbows with the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Lamborghini. From the shores of San Diego to the rolling vineyards of Napa Valley, Robb Report’s Car of the Year campaign is everything one might expect, and front and center from a distinguishable perch stands Cuvée and its 20 comrades who make the envious annual trip. There, they enjoy the exclusive privilege of experiencing 13 of the most elite automobiles on the planet. And while only one flawless machine will take home the crown, getting behind the wheel and sifting through the supercar candidates is the blissful crux of the weekend affair. “I’ve often said that it’s one of the best two days of my life each year,” reveals Larry Mueller, founder and managing partner of Cuvée.

“You’re in the company of the very best when it comes to an automobile and a driving experience. It’s one of the rarest opportunities in the world.” It’s an event like no other, and one that Mueller was introduced to nearly seven years ago after purchasing the package at a charity auction in California. Immediately drawn to the prospect of sampling the finest rides from around the globe as well as associating with like-minded car enthusiasts, Mueller was hooked after his first drive, that time in Napa. Since then, he’s made it a point to partner Cuvée with Robb Report for future campaigns. What has since transpired is one of the cornerstones that makes Cuvée, Cuvée. “Every year, we put together an incredible experience in concert with Robb Report, taking it to another level by surrounding our driving excursions with

culinary celebrations and wine tastings. It’s a full circle celebration of the finer things and one that our guests look forward to again and again, going so far as to plan their year around it.” For example, the 2015 San Diego iteration included a private tasting with the Dom Perignon team, a watchmaking session with Ulysse Nardin and a cooking class with the executive culinary team for the Fairmont Grand Del Mar Resort. In 2016, Mueller and his guests headed back to Napa, where they wined and dined their way through the valley as they ducked behind the gates of the area’s most exclusive, private wineries that are not otherwise open to the public only to be hosted by winemakers and generational legacies like Carlo Mondavi and Will Phelps. It’s all the familiar signature of Mueller and his attention to detail for the thoughtful luxuries that tend to accompany every Cuvée project. Of course, this celebration of the finest automobile craftsmanship has all eyes on the true guests of honor – the cars are the stars. The 2016 field included a murderer’s row of luxury and sports cars with the baker’s dozen including the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, the Bentley Mulsanne Speed, the BMW 750i xDrive, the Cadillac CTS-V, the Corvette Z06 Convertible, the Ferrari 488 GTB, the Jaguar F-Type R Convertible, the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce Roadster, the McLaren 650S Spider, the Mercedes-AMG GT S, the Mercedes-Maybach S600, the Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS and the Tesla Model S P90D.

IT BEGAN in a rather unassuming manner. Larry Mueller, who had recently launched Cuvée after achieving incredible success in Silicon Valley, wanted to give back. At the time, the ultraluxury real estate brand had only a few properties in its portfolio, and a small community of investors and guests. All the same, Mueller and his partners knew that leveraging the company’s homes, contacts and colleagues had the potential to raise a significant amount of money. And so in the fall of 2009, the team gathered 250 of their friends, held an auction that consisted largely of vacations at their handful of homes, and bid big in hopes of impacting Colorado’s at-risk youth. They dubbed it as a red carpet hangar party and raised $50,000 for Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver that year, a number that was not insignificant. But Mueller’s vision was bigger. Much bigger. Fast-forward to 2017, and Mueller and his Cuvée comrades are slated for their eighth annual Flight to Luxury event, where they’re poised to raise more than $1.7 million for the very organization with which they began. “Flight to luxury was conceived by Cuvée as the ultimate giving experience in Denver —the community that we live in and love,” Mueller explains. “It’s truly an exciting event —an event that you want to be at.” Indeed, Flight has become the fundraiser of the year, both for Denverites and for Cuvée’s global community. From an over-the-top cocktail hour that features the likes of aerial bartenders and live artists painting in the midst of the party, to a program that has seen NFL great Peyton Manning tossing footballs into the crowd, Flight to Luxury is not your run-of-the-mill charity event. And its beneficiary? Most certainly not your run of the mill charity. “In the city of Denver, about 29 percent of kids live in poverty. That’s over 40,000 children right in our backyard,” Mueller says. As such, all Flight to Luxury proceeds have gone directly to Boys & Girls Clubs since the event’s inception – a total that, today, hovers around the $5 million mark. No small feat, getting to this point has meant producing a night that outranks others, with memorable and luxe touches at every turn. Beginning with the locale, Flight to Luxury is aptly named, with only the most opulent and original details from top to bottom. Taking over not one but two private jet hangars, the evening begins with informal cocktails from handpicked distilleries and vineyards (think Veuve Clicqout, Don Julio and Silver Oak, among others) complemented by fare from the city’s top restaurants and chefs. All the while, guests are able to bid at the highly curated silent auction where items like trips to the Grammy Awards and designer watches are the norm. Gala-goers also look forward to Art Takes Flight, a unique pop up art experience where Colorado’s finest galleries showcase work from the most sought after contemporary artists, all of which is for sale in support of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. Entertainment also abounds – from a hip-hop violinist to an aerial drummer and well-known DJ. Yet, naturally, the shining stars are the shiny wheels and wings that appoint the hangar and tarmac. Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati are ready for guests to slip behind the wheel, and private aircraft like a Falcon 900, Hawker 800XP and Pilatus PC-12 are available for rare, intimate tours.

As the first portion of the evening winds down, guests are lead from one hangar to the next by a live marching band made up of the children from Boys & Girls Clubs. It’s a grand exit into an even grander entrance as Flight to Luxury’s live program begins to take shape. Once inside the second hangar, gorgeously appointed tables where VIPs enjoy personal butler service and cocktail-paired small plates, surround the stage, while cabaret tables are elevated behind them for the remainder of the crowd. Regardless of one’s seat, the energy of the live program is infectious. And at the very heart of it all is the Boys & Girls Clubs. As Cuvée founder Larry Mueller takes to the stage to welcome the more than 1,000 strong crowd, he is soon followed by the leadership of the event’s beneficiary as well as the very children it supports, who bravely take to the mic to share their personal experiences. These genuine, emotional testimonies allow guests to get a true sense of what the Club does and, more importantly, whom it impacts. “It’s an incredible organization that allows young people, from 6-18, to be safe and have fun but more importantly, it’s programmatically designed to maximize their potential,” Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver CEO Erin Porteous explains. What transpires next is an incredible outpouring of generosity, fueled by the passion that Cuvée shares for Boys & Girls Clubs. A live auction showcasing Cuvée’s sixstar villas, along with super sports cars and private jets earn top dollar from a crowd of kindhearted philanthropists who bid at record-breaking rates to enjoy an over-the-top dream vacation, all the while supporting their community. From planes and palatial villas in St. Barths, to a unique opportunity to test drive Robb Report’s Car of the Year contenders, Flight to Luxury’s live auction sets the bar for all that follow. “It’s an auction that reflects the spirit of Cuvée,” Mueller reveals. “Nothing about it is ordinary – from the trips we put together to having Peyton Manning toss footballs into a crowd of the highest bidders, we’re reinventing the way live auctions are perceived.” All of this, it would seem, is enough to end the event on a high note. But Flight to Luxury takes it one step higher, producing a fashion show that mixes live entertainment with some of the most sought after designers possible like Dennis Basso, Sue Wong, Trina Turk, Sarah Flint Shoes and Calypso. Simultaneously, dreamy fashion images shot at Cuvée’s properties – from Aspen to Los Cabos and everyplace in between – are projected behind the models as they take to the catwalk. After the show’s finale, a live rock band takes to the stage and guests dance in celebration into the late evening. An aerial bartender, a live art auction, silent disco, two jet hangars, hundreds of exotic cars and planes, fine fare, once-in-a-lifetime vacations, a ten piece band and a fashion show. It’s enough to go down in the record books as the event of the century. But for Cuvée, it’s simply what they do. It’s Flight to Luxury, and it’s the core of what the brand stands for – a vision that began eight years ago with a small group of friends and $50,000. A vision that has since touched the lives of thousands of children who would otherwise go without.

A VISION THAT ISN’T STOPPING ANY TIME SOON.

VENTURINGBEYOND Cuvée announces plans for release of Fund IV in its luxury real estate portfolio

VENTURES WINTER I SPRING 2017

Leave well enough alone. It’s an adage that rings true for many things in life and in the case of Cuvée, it’s a guiding principle of business, too. After a decade in the private equity real estate space, Founder Larry Mueller has learned a number of lessons, the most significant of which is this very idea. Namely, leaving well enough alone. “Cuvée started 10 years ago as a pure private equity play. I owned several homes, most of which sat empty the majority of the year. What’s more, when I visited I spent the first several days on maintenance, getting them up and functioning,” he explains. “It became clear to me that other secondary and tertiary homeowners likely experienced the same frustrations. I knew there had to be a smarter way.” With that, Mueller went to work on the framework for Cuvée – a name

Being a Cuvée investor is more than an investment in real estate. It’s an investment in a lifestyle. Being able to realize high returns while visiting exquisite properties and partaking in extraordinary experiences is beyond rare. It’s like being a part of a very special family, a family of like-minded people enjoying life to the fullest.

– Mark & Emily Spencer, Cuvée investors

derived from the French word meaning a wine produced by blending several grape varieties. “Cuvée was founded as an outgrowth of my passion for identifying and developing high end luxury real estate in a very boutique and exclusive way. I lived in France and knew the word Cuvée which is all about blending grapes or varietals to create the perfect wine or champagne. And I thought that was really appropriate for this private equity fund because you are blending three elements – investment, lifestyle and community.” And create he did. Today, Cuvée has become the most coveted private equity fund investing in luxury residential real estate in the market. “What we’ve built is extremely rare. To be able to access the most exquisite homes in the world, have a completely personalized experience, cover all of the recurring expenses through high-end rentals and having your equity appreciate at the same time is unheard of.” And while Cuvée does turn an excellent profit, the investment’s lifestyle component is equally valuable. “Cuvée has really given us an opportunity to deepen our

These properties provide a unique way of accomplishing that because they are so conducive to both privacy and coming together as a group while on our all too limited vacations. For us, making memories in such breathtaking environments has been priceless,” a Cuvée Fund I investor states. In fact, all considered, the estimated annual lifestyle dividend is 12 percent when average nightly rental rates are factored in. It’s this model that has led the brand through its first three funds and has yielded successful results for its partners. Just as each luxurious detail of a Cuvée home is designed with the guest in mind, its business is thoughtfully structured with the investor in mind. CUVEE.COM

71

The appeal of Cuvée is unmatched. Knowing that we are making an investment that will achieve an excellent rate of return while also enjoying the finest properties in the world and flawless service is impossible to beat.

– George & Carol Solich, Cuvée investors

Case in point, Cuvée bought one of the premiere units in 15 Central Park West in New York City before the old Mayflower Hotel – which previously existed at that location – was torn down. Buying into the residential development pre-construction meant that Cuvée could customize the home and have total control over its materials and finishes. “It was the last real condo building to be built right on the park, because nothing else could be torn down on Central Park West,” Mueller explains. Cuvée spent $7.2 million on the residence, which opened in 2008. Two years later, the company sold the property for almost double its initial investment. The entirety of that profit was dispersed to Cuvée’s Fund I investors. “Cuvée was designed to take care of its limited partnership,” Mueller says. “Once the initial investment is made, we don’t ask for annual fees, nightly rental rates or additional capital contributions. In 10 years, even through the depths of a recession, we have never missed covering the basic overhead of our homes, and we have always made a profit for our partners.”

64

It’s why Mueller, who is also the fund’s largest limited partner, hearkens back to the “well enough alone” mantra. Because Cuvée works so seamlessly and successfully, the plan is not to reinvent the wheel, but rather to find new avenues on which to travel. With three previous funds realizing positive returns in the reaches of Los Cabos, Hawaii, New York, Aspen, Vail Valley, St. Barths and Tuscany, Cuvée is looking to do what it does best with the release of Fund IV. Purchase real estate with great thought and intention, and create the world’s finest homes in the world’s most sought after destinations. “Our investment strategy is one from which we don’t deviate – we only buy in markets that are attractive to a global environment. By appealing to a worldwide clientele, we aren’t limited by economies and will have a buyer when the time is right to sell,” Mueller explains. “Fund IV could take us to destinations that include Paris, New York, Cuba and Hawaii, where we recently sold our estate on the island of Lanai to tech tycoon Larry Ellison.” What’s more, Mueller and his Fund IV partners will venture back to the Caribbean, securing an additional property on the coveted island of St. Barths. “From an investment perspective, we need to buy where we know we can execute and with the incredible knowledge, experience and insight we gained while building Vue de Rêves, returning to St. Barths is very wise.” In fact, the island’s real estate market is so limited and property is so scarce, that Cuvée’s show-stopping home (perched on almost an acre of land overlooking the Baie de St. Jean) has already received multiple inquiries that if realized, would yield a substantial gain. Why, then, would Mueller hold off on the sale? It echoes back to the very principles on which Cuvée was founded. “The investor community joins Cuvée for both a lifestyle and a profit. You can’t live in a hedge fund or a mutual fund,” he attests. “Cuvée is just as much about enjoying our homes as it is about their appreciation. It’s a rare, unique and specific opportunity that simply doesn’t exist elsewhere.”
