Master class A bedroom is a place of solace and slumber. It is a personal sanctuary where you shut out the rest of the world and escape with your thoughts and relax your way into sweet dreams. It is also where you can express yourself with your favorite colors, statements and pieces dedicated to the masters of the home. Decorating

The bedroom and bed linen deserve attention for color and linen quality.

the master bedroom can emphasize your personal style after you have done some research and determine what colors, styles and statement pieces you want to incorporate. Whether your taste and style is luxurious or simple, there are innumerable options for decorating. Some points you want to keep in mind are to keep colors

somewhat subtle so your eyes do not experience fatigue of the color scheme, which will not help you feel relaxed. Choose shades that impart comfort. Colors that are too bold may not bring about calmness. See what colors invoke soothing feelings for you and choose from there. You could paint or wallpaper in a monochromatic

tone or you can choose statement walls or the ceiling for a pop of color for something different. Some ideas include a metallic or deeply hued statement wall or ceiling, a statement light fixture, decorative lamps, a jeweled colored bed covering and throw continued on page 5

pillows for accents. However you decide to paint or wallpaper your master bedroom, ensure that the bed and bedding elicits coziness and comfort. While we are on the subject of beds and bedding, it is important you choose the size of bed that suits the master bedroom of the house. If you have a lot of space, choosing a large luxurious bed is a great option. If you don’t have too much space, a queen-sized or full-sized bed might do the trick. A good way to keep within the line of comfort is to choose sheets and bedding with a high thread count so that they feel luxurious and lull you to sleep each night after a long day. At the bedside, you can get creative with nightstands and use larger pieces so that the nightstand serves more than one purpose. Drawers and storage space are useful beside the bed for nighttime regimens and to keep things handy like reading glasses, your phone and charger, books and other items. If you have space in your master bedroom for a seating area, by all means incorporate a comfy chair and floor reading lamp. Dimmer switches on all the lights can also generate feelings of calmness and relaxation. Some people like a TV in the bedroom and others say it actually puts off restful sleep. Whether you want a television where you rest is up to you and your partner, but according to the Sleep Foundation, “Watching TV before bed is generally discouraged due to the negative effect it can have on your sleep.” The master bedroom is the most intimate space in the home and it requires some attention. Do your homework when updating for your master bedroom so that you find the styles and pieces that will relax and comfort you for years to come. p

C HEC KLIST | POOL MAIANTENANCE

Pooling resources We all would love to sink into a luxurious pool after a long day and spend our sunny weekends going for a dip and doing laps in our very own swimming sanctuary. You are not alone if you’re considering a swimming pool at your home. It isn’t difficult to imagine why anyone would want their very own secluded pool and lounging area they can escape to whenever they feel like it. While cost is a major consideration, if you are thinking about it, you likely have the means for your own home oasis. Pools are the embodiment of

luxury. They are family friendly and provide hours and hours of fun in the sun or relaxation in the shade. However, the cons of owning a swimming pool can be daunting. When thinking about a home swimming pool, cost and maintenance take center stage. However, pools of modern day are a lot less maintenance than pools which were constructed in the 1980s and 1990s. Adding a pool to your backyard will not only improve your social calendar, it will also add to the value of your home. And, contrary to popular belief,

there are ways to design the pool so that it is easier to maintain. A common misconception of having a home swimming pool is the amount of maintenance it takes. Maintaining the pool chemistry is necessary for proper disinfection and operation but can be challenging. According to Nadia Holm, a homeowner who put in a pool at her Tamuning home in 2021, “Pool chemistry can be complicated. When my husband and I designed our pool, we wanted it to be as low maintenance as possible. We made an upfront investment into

automated equipment including a salt chlorine generator, automatic pH controller, and ozonator. The initial cost was higher, but the end result is less pool maintenance. We still have to skim leaves and insects out of the pool from time to time and refill chemicals, but overall, we don’t spend much time on pool maintenance and are able to just enjoy the pool and entertaining our friends and family.” In Guam you can also outsource pool maintenance for a cost. p

Pure water For centuries, people have been fascinated by the calmness and serenity achieved through the sounds and sights of running water. Water features inside the home can provide soothing and relaxing sounds and come in various styles ranging from simple to extravagant, depending on your taste. Some of these styles are from Eastern traditions and others are more modern water-fountain-type features that you can add into your home as an accent or focal point. Water elements can be quite

beautiful and it isn’t difficult to understand why some people wish for a water feature at home. Dedicating a corner of a room to a water feature is a way to incorporate the peaceful sounds of water in your home. Available styles of water features include wall fountains with or without mirrors, floor fountains, bubble walls and panels, free standing or fountains mounted to a wall, and many other styles. Fountains can be made of glass and metals and are available in lighted varieties that can add a chic elegance to a room.

Many of the styles promise to be low maintenance and last for years to come, however the more extravagant features can be more costly. Simple fountains like free standing rock waterfalls can be added to your home for a lower price, yet can still provide the elements of relaxing sounds and serenity you might be looking for. These can be low maintenance and are affordable enough to update after a few years if you so desire. The maintenance involved with a water feature — whether simple or extravagant — is

something to consider. Homeowners must continue to monitor water levels and pump performance so that the feature lasts many years. The reasons you might want to consider a water feature are definitely for the aesthetic appeal they offer and, of course, the psychological effects of the sounds and sights of flowing water. The sound of flowing water is believed to relieve stress and anxiety, improve the quality of sleep, increase relaxation, aid in meditation, and help with concentration. p

A professional tan The epitome of a neutral shade is the classic tan from the brown color family. Choosing tan as the color to paint your living room, dining room, bedroom or bathroom is an excellent choice because the color elicits feelings of soothing security and warmth. The color tan can provide an earthy balance in the home

especially because it is a soft and relaxing shade. If we are talking about trends in color schemes, tan is on the uptick, and you will not go wrong if you choose this as a base color in your home. Recently, tan has gained popularity as a color choice for painting rooms in the home. Because it is neutral and pale,

there are plenty of complementary colors that will flatter a tan spectrum in your home. Tan may once have been considered a “boring” color to choose to paint a room, but if paired with the right complementary color or colors, you can create a showstopper of a room with a tan base. A beautiful choice is using tan

with other tones in the brown color family which can offer a chic and minimalistic appeal. Tan along with white provides a classic and clean look that gives off a relaxing vibe and can temper moods. sophisticated. Using accent colors like blue, pink, teal and yellow in a tan room will offer a pop of color on a neutral canvas and can be easily changed up or modernized while keeping the same tan base. If you have wood flooring or flooring that resembles wood, tan is an excellent choice for a neutral backdrop for painting a living, dining, or bedroom. It also works well with muted carpet shades in the brown color family. A tan

bedroom with accents in some of the colors mentioned can provide a tranquil repose and place for restful sleep. Shades of tan can be warmer or cooler depending on its undertones. Your paint store professional can offer some advice. There are shades of tan that are cool and can be energizing and others that are more warm and calming. Depending on what you want to accomplish in a room, choose which shade suits your mood. A bedroom should be serene and bring about

restful feelings, but an office space should be conducive to working and productivity, so choose the shades that work for each space. Tan shades have replaced the gray shades from last decade as preferred neutrals. When choosing a shade of tan to paint a room in your home, remember what you want your room to invoke. There are ways to make the muted shade of tan a statement and focal point of a room and will make an impression on your family and guests. p
