Stocking up Kitchen pantries are popular among all members of a household and ways to keep them organized and using them best are important to all. When pantry cabinets and shelves are kept neat and organized, you can see all the ingredients and goods in the kitchen to make cooking

and recipes easier with knowledge of what is on hand and also knowledge of items that are running low and need to be replenished. A tidy pantry says a lot about its owner. Tidiness in the pantry makes the kitchen appear clean and orderly.

A beautifully organized and stocked pantry is impressive and a sure crowd pleaser. When you see items neatly shelved like they are in the store, it can bring about a calming and appetite whetting sensation. A pantry that is neat and uses the space well certainly beats

a dusty cupboard with cluttered old cardboard boxes, packets, jars, cans and crumpled bags. There are several ways to get your pantry looking in tip-top shape and it all begins with organization. continued on page 5

Storage containers with airtight lids keep ingredients fresh.

Using clear or transparent decanters or storage containers with airtight lids have become more and more prevalent in modern times. Tall and rectangular shaped decanters offer the best use of space. Round or circular ones aren’t as space friendly. You don’t want to misuse what little space you have in the pantry and these types of bins can be your friend to help use space wisely. Decanters and storage containers also look more organized and neater when all containers are uniform. They can be used for dry ingredients such as flour and sugar and for dry pastas and beans. Using see-through storage containers is a great way to always be aware of your pantry’s stock. To keep things organized, place like items nearby and categorize areas and shelves. Using a lazy Susan for storing oils, condiments, vinegars, soy sauce and other items can be helpful, too. Decanters also helps keep ingredients fresher for a longer time. Dry cereals, cookies, chips and other snacks can go stale if not in an airtight container. If you have little ones, keep the ingredients you wish out of their hands on higher shelves but leave snacks

and other kid-friendly items on lower shelves in easy to open bins. For items that can make a mess, remind the kids they should ask for help. Having a kid-friendly shelf or area in the pantry can is useful. When kids get a hankering for a snack, they can easily reach it themselves. This can also be helpful when you want kids to help put groceries away. A tidy pantry looks like it has been decorated rather than being a practical way to store food items. To begin organizing, start by clearing your pantry completely and discarding what needs to be thrown out. Next, you can do an inventory of what you have and begin a list of what needs restocking. The next step is to begin putting like items together and deciding where they go. Canned goods should be grouped with like kinds and stacked and stored in their own area. Baking goods can be grouped together and dinner items like pasta or other jarred sauces and snacks can be grouped nearby. Oils and other liquids shouldn’t be placed up too high to avoid messy spills and breakage. You could label your containers with “best used by” dates if you want to be super organized however, clear containers help to get things used and not forgotten about over time, so things won’t sit for too long. Keeping the pantry organized definitely helps when making your grocery list as you can see what items you are low on and also what items aren’t being consumed so you don’t purchase them again. After organizing and grouping, inventory and restocking, you are done. Social media and popular websites often feature posts with organized pantries and even celebrities have made them a want item. Looking at a beautiful pantry space offers a sense of peacefulness and organizing your own will generate satisfaction and will restore order in your kitchen. p

Flower power Planting trees, shrubs, hedges, planters or pots with flowers outside your home can add beauty to your outdoor living space and yard. Planting each of these requires planning and time for them to grow, mature and finally bloom outside your home. Flowers are inherently beautiful, and your backyard and garden will benefit from these colorful accents. Theseus “TJ” Mendiola, owner of Crop King Hydro, said which flowers you choose to plant or transplant around your home is dependent on their placement around the home and your desired look. “For shorter to medium flowers for the front edge up against the home you could do lxora, golden trumpet, rock rose, ginger torch, or poinsettia,” he said. For bushes or hedges, Mendiola suggests hibiscus, bougainvillea, or birds of paradise. For decorative stand-alone trees he recommends

the plumeria or flame tree. After planting a flowering plant or tree, Mendiola said that first we must understand that flowers, just like humans, have a reproductive cycle and flowering is key to that function. “Plants will flower when they reach adulthood; for some that is within four weeks but others could take three months for them to first bloom.” He said plants flowering all year long, is not typical, but flowering periodically is. Mendiola also said that popular local varieties tend to flower often, but they do take a rest. “These types of plants or trees tend to stay in flower longer due to their acclimation to Guam’s two weather patterns — dry and wet.” There is also maintenance to consider when planting flowers and flowering plants around your home. “That’s as easy as deciding whether to choose in ground soil or in a pot.

Obviously ground soil will allow the roots unlimited expansion, which will support a larger plant and explosive growth which will lead to higher trimming maintenance.” However, there is a benefit for some species with stronger roots. “They will be sourcing and recruiting beneficial bacteria already present in the earth, which the roots can benefit from by obtaining many of the nutrients they need naturally,” he said. The hydroponic gardening store owner said there are many resources online to identify what soil is best for what plant and likewise how often to water and how often to feed your outdoor plants. “In the end, researching your plant’s preferred nutrient requirements will be to your benefit, as too much of one macronutrient can cause burning or disruption to the growth of the

plant, or creating nutrient lock out at the root zone.” After you have decided on where you would like the flowers outside your home, and which varieties you would like to grow, you can get started. Do your own gardening or hire a professional. After the required maturation period is complete, you can see the results of your labor. “Once you finally reach —or are about to reach bloom, there are specific bloom nutrients you give your plant that have elevated phosphorus and potassium levels to support bigger and brighter flowers,” Mendiola said. “I would talk to your local grow store and discuss what types of product lines they have and what stage of growth they support before buying an all-in-one product that may not work as well.” p

Planting ideas Brightening your home with the use of plants and flowering plants throughout each room is a great way to energize your living space. It is always nice to bring some of the outside in. There are countless choices for indoor plants and flowers that will add color, vibrancy, freshness, and life to any room in the home. When adding indoor plants to your home’s décor, there are some things to keep in mind. First you want to select from plants and flowers that are not toxic to humans and pets. Dogs and cats have been known to chew on and even ingest many types of plants. It is best to conduct a search online to see what plants are toxic to pets so as not to bring those into the home. There

are many nontoxic indoor plants that are harmless to pets, however your domestic cat or dog might end up chewing on and destroying the plant. Many pet owners can attest to this. We don’t know for sure why pets like to eat and chew on houseplants, but toxic plants can cause various gastrointestinal issues and in worse cases, death. Also consider when selecting indoor plants how well a plant will thrive in the room. There are some plants that can do well in low light and others that require some sunlight. The sago palm, pink anthurium, African violet, snake plant, and bromeliad can thrive without much sunlight and are beautiful to look at. You should also consider how much

maintenance a plant or flowers are going to require. Daily watering can easily get away from us when life happens. However, there are some people that find caring for houseplants relaxing, satisfying and even therapeutic. Many indoor plants can go a couple of days without water, so choose which ones you like accordingly. Plants dress up and breathe life into any room in the home. Home offices really get a boost from an indoor plant because of the nature of the space. Offices can be associated with stark white, boring rooms with unflattering lighting, but throw in a lovely hydrangea plant and the room is transformed. Living rooms and family rooms are also perfect spaces to showcase

indoor plants and flowers. Living plants can enliven a room and act as a focal point that offers a taste of nature. The bathroom can be dressed up and fitted with a potted plant or two on the vanity or on top of the toilet tank. When you introduce a plant into a restroom, it brightens things up and offers a more organic look. Don’t forget that the plant’s pot or planter box is also a part of your décor and the combination of a lovely plant in a stunning pot is unbeatable. Once you have determined the level of commitment you are willing to undertake with your houseplants, you can decide on your favorites that you, your family and maybe your pets can enjoy. p

How cool is that The fresh, clean, and inviting colors of the cool palette definitely cool down your mood and put you in a peaceful frame of mind. Blue, purple, and green are the stars of the cool color family, and their innumerable variations can transform your living spaces into refreshing escapes where you will breathe in the relaxing tones and vibes. When incorporating cool colors into the spaces of your home, keep in mind a neutral base with cool accent walls can look impressive and make it easy to switch the shades and tones of the cool colors you choose. more purple, can turn a stark room into something magnificent. Think about how nicely an all-white tiled swimming pool looks with a few blue tile accents to really drive the refreshing vibe to the maximum. Lissa Talavera, general manager of Furniture Kathy Style, suggests incorporating cool colors such as shades of blue, green and purple. “These colors in your home can create a calm and soothing vibe. Variations of cool colors in addition to cool neutrals, such as gray, taupe and ivory are used where a calming energy is appreciated, she said. “The most common rooms in a home where cool colors are used is in a bedroom or home office, however, it can also be used throughout your

home where a serene, relaxing ambiance is desired.” Another way you could incorporate cool colors into your home is to transform a room into a monochromatic marvel. Monochromatic painted rooms in the cool color family can help people feel calm and can whisk you away to a tranquil place. An “all shades of blue” bedroom or living room can offer a dramatic effect that evokes a chill modern mood and relaxation. Nothing invokes the feeling of freshness like liberal shades of green throughout a room. Bathrooms in particular can be powerful when decorated in all green hues. Green shades shades bring

about the feelings of refreshing, crisp, cleanliness. Cool shades of blue invoke cleanliness, purity, and relaxation. Cool blues can make a kitchen appliances and accents pop. Bedrooms decorated in the cool color family work extremely well and offer a bit of cool dazzle where many of us spend most of our nighttime. Unlike some other color families, the cool palette lends itself well to any room. If your favorite colors are in the cool family, you will be thrilled at all the variations the color group has to offer throughout your house. Selecting purple to paint or continued on page 10

wallpaper in a bedroom is a fine choice. The color invokes power and richness. It is associated with royalty and the bedroom is a perfect place to express the moods that purple brings about. A room painted purple can help you drift away and escape into slumber. Painting a room in shades of green can invoke a relaxing, tropical vibe often preferred by residents in Guam. Adding plants to accent in an all-green room will only increase the mood of the tropics. Cool colors can be paired with other color families, but as a rule of thumb, cool colors

do well on their own without a complementary hue. Blue, purple, and green are dynamic enough they can stand alone. Using a couple of or all three main colors of the cool family can look elegant if done properly. A lilac color of paint or wallpaper with touches of green on an accent wall will look lovely in a master bedroom. A beachy look can be achieved by using a combination of some blue and green hues. For something a little more chic, a living room with purple and blue walls can look quite glamorous when paired with white or silver accents.

To make your decision on the cool color or color scheme you are thinking about for a room in your home, visit a paint and/or wallpaper distributor to see all the brilliant options available. Paint and wallpaper professionals are experienced at shade selection and will have many cool suggestions. Cool colors do not go out of style and their calming nature is a sure way to make your family and guests enjoy your home. It is not difficult to imagine how the cool family of colors can enliven the walls in a home. The cool family is one to look out for. p
