Some of us still prefer the feel of a solid book in our hands to curl up with when we want to unwind. Even now, while times have moved us into the digital era, there are still many of us who appreciate bound books and the opportunity not to look at a screen. Book lovers and home décor aficionados can agree that a home library is not only stylish and impressive, but it also makes a statement and is practical. There are hundreds of ways to decorate a home library and the ways to display books in shelves or bookcases are equally innumerable. When you imagine a library you might think of wooden bookshelves, government metal shelves, or a combination of both. But your home library can be whatever your heart and mind desires. A simple search on design ideas will have you in the realm of hard-bound bliss. If you prefer a rich, opulent look, you could design the library with built-in bookcases along the walls from floor to ceiling. Mahogany or a lookalike style would evoke a classic feel to your home library while white

Include cozy seating to curl up in. lack the resources and real estate to dedicate an entire room to a library, you can still develop a home library feel in your house. A corner of a living room, office, bedroom, or family room can be transformed into a library space with a few bookcases, a reading lamp, and a cozy chair chaise lounge seating or day bed to curl up in. Another area to consider for a library space in your home is the foyer or entrance, which can double as a library space.
Remember, a home library does not just have to be a room with bookshelves chock full of books. There are ways to add some style into your library with keepsakes, souvenirs, and collectibles on the shelves as well. If you are a collector of more than books, your library space can be used to display these items also. Trophies or awards could be displayed on shelves in the library to break up the monotony of nothing but books in cases. There is also the option of combining a home library with a study which can include adding a desk and chair to the room or space so that it doubles as a place to study, research, or work. If one corner is dedicated a “reading only” area, the room will still be thought of as a library. On Guam, you will have to remember to keep your library space dry and cool to protect the books in your collection from getting soiled with mold and mildew. When you begin decorating your home library, choose the coolest and driest area in your home for the space. You should also keep in mind not to allow your library to be an eating and drinking room, to keep things clean, dry, and neat. Your home library is a place to retreat when you want to delve into a book, whether to escape into a different world, to educate yourself, or uncover a mystery. Make yours uniquely you and create a space that you can enjoy for years to come. p

Everyone loves a beautifully tiled kitchen, bathroom or other relevant space such as a laundry. There are vibrant colors to choose from, different textures, and styles in thousands of variations. What’s not to Well,like?a major component of tiles is grout. Grout keeps the tiles in place and protects from damage from water or other material and we cannot have tiles without it. What’s not to like is what can happen to grout. Light colored grout can stain and can get damaged. Also, because grout is porous, water can get through and can cause further problems. Grout is prone to water damage, mold and mildew and cracking. Choosing the right grout for the space you are tiling, and maintenance can save money and headaches in the future. When tiling or maintaining tiles, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Selecting tiles for your indoor or outdoor space can be daunting with the sheer number of options available. You want to make sure you select a style, color, pattern, texture, and its durability suit all your needs. Dark colored tiles can use darker colored grout, and this can prevent some staining. You want to select a specialized high traffic type of tile for the kitchen and bathroom. You should also consider surfaces that can get wet often need to be more stain and water resistant. Thankfully most tiles are already non-slip and water resistant by nature. You want your tiles and grout to last as long as they possibly can before you have to replace the grout because its life has run out. For bathroom tiles, you should get into a habit of using a squeegee after your shower on the tiles and throughout the surfaces. There are also after shower or bath sprays that can be applied daily. Kitchen tiles should be cleaned daily or as often as can be for cleanups and messes. Outside of this, weekly deep cleaning on the bathroom and kitchen tiles must be done to keep stains and mildew at bay. There are commercial grout stain removers and cleaners, but a simple homemade version is a quick internet search away. Using a high-quality grout and sealant will avoid costly replacement, so keep this in mind when you are going to tile or retile a surface. A popular style of design evident throughout the country is midcentury modern. In architecture and furniture, mid-century modern refers to the era from the 1930s to the mid-1960s. The style is identified by clean lines and an absence of ornamentation or embellishment. It is simplistic and minimalist and can be soothing to the eyes when compared to a busy decorated room in the home. Any room in your home can have this design style with the right simple, clean furniture and décor. Popular TV shows such as Mad Men, I love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, The Twilight Zone and Bewitched — which were all set in the era of this style — depict mid-century modern design on the sets. The clean lines and streamlined focus of the design are apparent. This style can be achieved in your home with a few things to keep in mind. Remember that less is definitely more. Keep clutter at bay with out of the way drawers and cabinets to put things in, so that they are not strewn over furniture. Choose simple chairs that aren’t overly stuffed or soft looking. Décor from the era like table lamps or floor lamps are great additions. Throw pillows can be used in a minimalistic approach to add some style and color to a living room. The lack of ornamentation is key. Keeping things clean and clear is the look you want to accomplish for this design style. Colors and hues are up to your individual taste, and you can always look at examples with a quick internet search on the style. Colors like lime green, orange, yellow, red and blue are used with neutral tones in this design style.
Mid-century modern furniture also looks like the styles from popular TV shows post World War II. Mid-century modern has a “modern” appeal. A nice way to add some punch to your mid-century modern kitchen and living room is to add some décor from the era like glassware, dishes, and other kitchenware in colors that mimic the 1930s to 1960s. Surfaces and walls are clean and clear of ornamentation, which makes it popular for people who do not like clutter. While lines are clean and clear, it doesn’t mean the look resembles a laboratory. Bold colors are bright and striking and can come from either warm or cool color palettes. They can be a magnificent focal point for a room in your home, or the outside of your home. Painting or wall papering a room in your home with a bold color or colors is a fabulous way to express yourself and your favorite colors. Using bold colors is the opposite of plain and boring. You need to be mindful to not let the color become garish. A bold color or combination of colors can be obtrusive if — for example, you select the colors of your favorite football team to paint your living room. This is perfectly fine for a significantly large house or for young person to express themselves but if you are in a family home, it is best to stick to basics. Think a hot pink, vivid red, distinct cerulean blue or salient green. These colors used alone or in combination can make a room stand out. If you are a bold color enthusiast, your home should reflect this part of your personality. There are some well-known bold color combinations that are always sure to please. Using a bold blue with a bright orange as a combination is pleasing to the eye because the bold colors complement each other well. Using yellow with red is another popular bold color combination. Black and white, green and yellow, magenta and blue, bright purple and orange work beautifully when paired. If you are selecting samples or swatches of colors, ask your paint or wallpaper specialist for some advice on combining bold colors. Be sure you choose color combinations that add contrast so the result looks balanced.
