Playing around An option for keeping the rest of your house tidy, while also providing a kid-friendly environment just for play, is a dedicated playroom or play space, if you can set aside the square footage. Playrooms are both functional and practical for family homes; if you do not have an extra room in your home, then a corner of the living room or child’s room can be dedicated to play.
A designated room or space for toys can reduce clutter throughout the house.
When designing your children’s playroom, you want to keep a few things in mind, like the space should always have storage for toys and play materials that are within reach for kids so that they may retrieve items and also store them away when play time is finished. Sid Nama, executive director of Vertex Guam, a general contractor, said, “Recycling kids old toys to decorate the room has multiple
advantages in reducing waste, changing designs often and keeping kids excited.” You want the playroom to encourage imagination and creativity. One way to do this is to include your child in the decorating of the room. Another great way thing to incorporate in a playroom is color. Walls and décor can follow a theme based on your child’s favorite or
you can simply select a bold color to paint a wall and follow with some décor like a functional and comfortable rug, a coloring and painting table and chairs, pillows, bean bags and picture frames to provide accents. There are countless ideas to choose from. An outer space or underwater theme can be easy if your child is fascinated by continued on page 5

these atmospheres. Other ideas can be a farm or zoo theme if the child is an animal lover. Maybe your child has a favorite cartoon character that you want to showcase, however an entire motif of one character might be a bit much because children sometimes outgrow favorite phases. In this case using colors from the same color family as the character will honor it but also all for adjustment in the future. Some storage options for an organized playroom include cubby holes, built-in shelving units, large bins, wicker or wire baskets, toy boxes and bins that have a splash of color or follow a theme of the space and can be used for accents in the playroom. Another fun idea to incorporate is a chalkboard on the wall which you can purchase and hang, or you could use chalkboard paint for a whole chalk art area. Using your child’s favorite color and ideas to decorate the room are ways to celebrate your children and can really make kids adore their playrooms. This can help the child develop some ownership to the room which can also help with responsibility. Nama said, “A kids’ playroom should be painted with writable paint. It will help kids use their imagination and keep the house looking neat without having to repaint.” You want the playroom to be child-friendly and inviting so furniture should be appropriately sized and functional. If your child is a book lover, a rocking chair and floor space for story reading is ideal. Though most things should remain stored within reach for the kids, some items may be stored out of reach if they have many small parts that could get lost, or pose a hazard. Items to be stored out of reach include board games, puzzles and Lego. p

Wouldn’t you know it Using different kinds of wood, wooden components and features in your outdoor décor can add an organic and natural quality to that part of your home. Wooden decks, fences and pergolas can add style and elegance to your home’s outdoor space; and simple repairs and regular maintenance can add years to the life of the things in your backyard. A very important way to maintain your wooden feature is to use a pressure washer on the surfaces to remove mold and mildew stains and build-up caused by exposure to the elements. make your wooden features look like new as well. Local lumber and hardware stores carry items used to clean, stain and seal these wooden features and representatives will offer their advice to you. According to the team at Home Depot, “Learning how to maintain a wooden deck can involve making a long-term maintenance schedule for inspections, cleanings and refinishing as needed. Attentive wood deck maintenance can keep it looking its best and make it less likely you’ll have to replace the whole thing.” While wooden decks and fences are excellent and common features, a pergola can offer some protection
from the elements if it is placed over a seating area on your deck. Of course, you will need to maintain your pergola in the same as other wood features outside the home. “Using wooden pallets to create outdoor furniture provides a lot of versatility,” said Sid Nama, executive director of Vertex Guam, a general contractor. “Tables, benches, planter boxes and furnishings for an outdoor bar can be fashioned and need very minimal coating, making it cheaper and can also recycle wood.” Your contractor or lumber expert will recommend the best type of wood, depending on your wooden feature, so that it will be able to stand up to Guam’s weather
and environment. With regular maintenance and addressing problems early, you, your family and friends can enjoy these wooden features for years to come. It is important to note you need to speak with your contractor or lumber store where you are purchasing the wood for your project about the proper time to stain your wooden feature. Some experts say to wait several weeks after the project has been constructed and others say to wait even longer, claiming that a year is the right time to stain and seal. The Home Depot recommends 60 to 90 days after construction. p

Tropicana Who doesn’t want to feel completely relaxed in their home after a long day? Bringing the ocean, flora and fauna of the tropical island inside your home is a great way to do that. landscapes, trees, plants, flowers and even wildlife specific to Guam can be used to feature the island which can whisk you away to a secluded beach and relaxing all day in the shade. “Tropical colors always bring a lot of life on any bad day,” said Sid Nama, executive director of Vertex Guam, a general contractor. “I would
recommend using lush greens, ocean blues, vibrant coral shades, citrus and sandy shades, with artwork including marine creatures, birds and of course palm trees.” An easy way to add tropical flair to your decor is by incorporating some plants in the aesthetic. Local plant nurseries and landscape companies will have a
variety of offerings to add to your tropical living room, bedroom, dining room or family room. Local furniture stores also carry artificial pieces that are less maintenance and can be a focal point in a room that carries with it the relaxing climate and mood of the island. continued on page 8

continued from page 7 A small palm tree that is natural or even artificial along with some other pieces with colors that look like the outside can turn a room into a tropical refuge. “Choose interior and exterior art, furniture and rugs made of natural fibers such as jute, sisal and sea grass to add to the tropical feel.
Bamboo-inspired elements are also another way to enhance the tropical look,” Nama added. Aside from plants, the right accent pieces in the right colors will make your room complete. Tropical inspired pieces such as clocks, picture frames, tropical inspired beverage containers, accent pillows in colors that tie the room together are endless. Throw pillows
and throw blankets in dramatic green with palms or that feature tropical flowers can make a big impact. Wall art with a tropical flower like a hibiscus or a dragonfly and some coconut leaf woven features shout the tropics. Installing a hammock or chair that hangs from the ceiling will definitely meet the goals of incorporating tropical décor in your home.
Color and foliage from the outside can turn your home into a cozy vacation spot. While we live on an island, the daily routine can often take away from the soothing vibe of the island tropics, so turning your home into a sanctuary can help you slip into relaxation. p

Purple Rain The color purple can be a spectacular addition to the interior of a home, if the correct shades and dimensions are used. The color has become more popular in modern times. Home furnishings, décor and paint or wallpaper is available in a myriad of purple options for homeowners to choose from. Purple and its shades can offer a glamorous feel to your living spaces and in some cultures it is seen as a symbol of bravery, wisdom and spirituality. The color is also associated with soothing

migraine relief, easing depression and assisting those cope with addictions. Some also claim purple inspires and stimulates creativity. Therefore, incorporating purple into the home is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it can possibly improve the way you, your family and guests will feel. Sid Nama, executive director of Vertex Guam, a general contractor, told The Real Estate Journal that, “for hundreds of years, the color purple has been associated with royalty and power. Purple is a good choice for many versatile modern,
vintage and earthy furniture and other items in a room.” There are countless beautiful ways to incorporate purple in your home’s interior. Bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, home offices and family rooms can be painted or covered with wall paper in shades of purple on accent walls along with some added décor so the color really pops. You might find an accent piece that inspires you to use purple on your wall or floor coverings and you can go from there. The color should be used
sparingly if a room is painted purple. Just a few décor items will tie the room together. Walls painted purple or covered in purple wallpaper can be dramatic and a good option if done so tastefully, so that décor can be added. Décor including a statement chair, throw pillows, tablecloths, dining sets, bed coverings, rugs, and accent pieces are fabulous ways to add purple to complete a room’s look. Nama suggests that when decorating a room with purple; continued on page 10

always try to choose shades with rich undertones. In a dining room, a dramatic dark purple tablecloth can be a lovely way to feature silver dining pieces and tableware with some flecks of the color involved to make an impact. In the bedroom, a deep purple bed cover piece along with a lighter shade on the wall or walls can be an elegant way to incorporate the color. In a home office, a backdrop of a lighter shade of purple on walls can be soothing to the eyes. In the living room or family room, bold choices like a purple sofa can be inviting when darker and lighter shades are used throughout the space. Purple items like candles, flowers, window coverings, a statement light fixture and rugs are good ways to begin a purple spectrum in the living room, bedroom or family room. The popular television show “Friends” featured a purple walled living room and accent pieces that inspired purple walls the world over. The use of purple can easily be made more glamorous and elegant with some of the suggested uses and a quick search on ways to use the color. If you have a home bar, adding purple would be a terrific way to give it some attention and flair. p
