Behind closed doors
Just as important as any room in the home or, even more important for some people, is the closet. Most of us wish we had more closet space and the spaces we do have are just never large enough. We depend on these tiny “rooms” where we can store important items and keep them closed away from the rest of the home. We all appreciate wellorganized closet spaces and are
always looking for good advice on how to keep our closets organized. It is a good idea to keep closets neat and conducive to convenience so we can find items when we are looking for something specific. There are countless websites and magazine features that offer organization advice for your linen, bedroom, hallway, laundry room and other closet in your home.
The first thing to be done when organizing a closet is to purge anything cluttering the space. Decluttering or getting rid of things you don’t need that just take up space is fundamental to organizing closet space. Start by clearing the shelves and discarding what is not needed and prioritizing what is left.
The next step to organizing your closet is to choose the shelving or
organizational device you want to use. There are hundreds of styles of organizers like shelves or compartment pieces for any closet in your home, and a selection at almost any good hardware store in Guam. What you have to determine is which organizer suits you best and will be one that you are able

to use repetitively that you can maintain for years to come.
Wardrobe or bedroom closet
If you prefer your shoes in a hanging organizer to keep them off the floor to keep them away from pets, there are many to choose from and they are a quick internet search away. Storage bags and bags and that have the excess air vacuumed sealed out are useful to keep clothing from normal wear and tear if you wish to preserve certain garments like wedding gowns, costumes or other clothing. You can add shelves to offer more space for folded clothing items such as bulky sweaters that are heavy on hangers and take up too much room in drawers. Bedroom closet organizers come in varieties that can be specific for your preference. All you need to do is look around.
Linen closet
The hallway closet that you use to store bed sheets, towels, tablecloths, placemats, cloth napkins and other linens is one that is easier to keep organized since there are usually two shelves dedicated to everyday
use, and the other shelves are more seasonal. Your fancy tablecloth may only be used for holidays and special occasions, so these can be stored on higher or lower shelves with cloth napkins and other like items. Usually, these closets have shelving built in, however there are portable shelves that can be useful for these closets.
Coat closet
Many homes still come with a traditional coat closet adjacent to the front door, and these may be the ideal space for sports gear, beach mats, folding chairs, and patio cushions.
Storage closet
All-purpose storage closets are a lot of fun, because we don’t often go digging around in them unless we are looking for something specific and usually for a certain occasion or time of year. Holiday decorations are often stored in closets, and everyone gets a little more excited when they are in the storage closet at the onset of the holiday season, which begin in October with Halloween. These closets can be organized by season, and it helps to keep like things together and labeled so items are easily located.
Laundry and cleaning supplies closet
This closet houses all the cleaning supplies and cleansers plus appliances like the iron and vacuum cleaner. It helps to use shelving or a basket organizer in this closet to keep like items together. Keep laundry items in one area and cleansers and devices in another. Leave the most often used items in the center or top shelves that are easiest to reach and use lower shelves for items you don’t use often. Use your judgement based on how often you use the items in this closet, and you will be good to go. p
Keep cleaning supplies together. An open and shut case
If you live on Guam, it is highly likely you own or drive a car or truck. Like our homes, we want to keep our vehicles protected and safe from harm and exposure to the elements. If you park your vehicle in a garage, it is recommended your garage enclosure is equipped with a garage door.
A garage door allows for entrance and exit to your garage which not only is the space to park your automobile and other vehicles, but where you store outdoor equipment and supplies. Sometimes you can store items in a garage when there is no room for them inside the house, or it’s appropriate they can easily be taken outside. Whatever you store in your garage, it is your property, and you want to keep those items protected and safe, which is the
very reason to install a garage door or doors. They protect what’s within from exposure to the elements and from criminal activity.
Poorly maintained garage doors can be defective and can cause problems such as inconvenience and unexpected expenses. Keeping a garage door properly maintained will save you a bigger renovation project, and keep dollars in your wallet.
It is unlikely in this age to see a garage door that does not have a motorized mechanism. Normally they are automatic and require the use of a remote or a smart phone app to operate it. The motor should be inspected for normal wear and tear every few months. This service can usually be provided by the business where you purchased the garage door unit.
Maintenance on the garage door will help keep life convenient, but it can also help you to do your best to prevent accidents. Locks, springs and the garage door sensor and other components should be inspected by garage door maintenance professionals from the business who sold you the unit. If these components fail, the door could possibly slip and cause damage to your property or injury to people.
Ensuring regular maintenance on your garage door can diminish the chances of something going wrong. It is a good idea to not rush out the door and leave before the garage door completes its closing up mechanism to know for sure it is working properly, and your property is locked up safe and sound. Professionals recommend
inspection of all the moving parts of the garage door’s mechanism. Tightening up bolts, replacing worn hardware and taking a close look at it to see if everything is in working order is advisable. Because of the repetitive opening and closing, nuts and bolts can get loose and if they dislodge or come apart, accidents can happen.
To prevent rusting of your garage door, it should be washed thoroughly at least twice a year. Applying a wax coating like you would on your car can help to keep rust at bay. You should also keep the moving parts of your garage door lubricated and this should be done by the professional who maintains your garage door. Regular maintenance and cleaning of your garage door will save you time, hassle and money. p
Bringing it home
The styles of the Mediterranean have influence from the countries that share a coast with the Mediterranean Sea.
These countries have distinctive styles that give this home décor approach its elegance and originality. Features from Italy, Greece, Spain, Turkey, Albania and Morocco along with other lands in the Mediterranean region define this emphasis. Elements from each of the countries in the region can be observed throughout this style.
To incorporate this style in your home, begin with a neutral backdrop in the room or rooms. Add a distinctive wooden décor, which resembles carvings that originate in Morocco. Look for Spanish style floors and tiling or a rug or carpet in a terracotta tone. Incorporate vivid cobalt blue accents and stone features which can be attributed
to Greece. There are many other unique décor items and ideas that come from the region where the sea is center stage.
A living room could have white walls with a textured finish and some natural wood to provide the relaxed Mediterranean beach atmosphere as its base. Some features could be a neutral-colored Spanish style upholstered sofa or sectional.
Add to this some bold colored throw pillows that mimic terracotta and the earthy tones of a Spanish villa. Metallic colors like copper and gold, colors of lush greenery, tones of the sunshine and, of course, the cerulean turquoise of the sea, are among the many accent colors you can use to achieve this style in your home.
Rustic furniture pieces lend themselves well to the
Mediterranean style. Bold Mediterranean inspired colored accents throughout the room will whisk you away to an ocean side marina. Decorating a bedroom in Mediterranean style is not difficult and using neutral fabrics with regional accent colors and pieces like a Greek style canopy over the bed with wooden or metal posts. The style often features a bed with posts, but without a fabric canopy as well. Accents around the room like a jeweled and metallic framed mirror can add style and Mediterranean emphasis.
The colors and styles of the Mediterranean are a click away when doing a search for décor and there are many options available for you when decorating a room in your home. Natural colored furniture pieces and fabrics for décor accents are just a few of
the items you can find when looking online for Mediterranean inspiration. Light fixtures or lamps with shades that are of natural materials or are metallic are good choices for this style. Wall accents and hangings that are natural, wooden, shaded in gold or copper will bring the region into a room.
This approach is popular for Guam homes because it is suited for warm, sunny and beachy climates. The style is timeless and if you are lucky enough, you have large bay windows that let the sunshine in, which is precisely how this style should be framed. Natural light and shades paired with vivid accent-colored pieces will bring the Mediterranean into your intimate space for your family and guests to enjoy. The style is enticing and inviting while also elegant and comforting. p

Everything pales in comparison
A muted color is what we describe as the opposite counterpart to a vivid or bold color. To achieve a muted color tone, select a base color and combine it with a complementary color, or even black or white. This creates the “muted,” pale or dulled version of the original base color. Muted colors are also described as lower in saturation than vivid or bold colors. Muted colors are appealing to the eye and most people are pleasantly surprised at
how well they like them when using these colors to paint the exterior or interiors of their homes.
There are a myriad of shades and tones in the muted color palette. The options are limitless for painting a room or rooms in your home. While vivid colors are bright and attract attention, the subtle beauty of a muted shade can make a room take center stage as the beauty of a coffee tone rather than a deep brown is equally appealing.
Vivid and bright colors can also lead to visual fatigue and even eye strain if they command all the attention in a room. To remedy this phenomenon, enter muted colors as the backdrop of a living, dining, bed or family room.
Muted shades can make a room more inviting and appealing to those who want to relax and unwind. Muted shades are soothing and offer a sense of warmth and comfort as opposed to a stark white walled
room that is more fitting for an office type of space. Muted shades are conducive to relaxation and a room painted in a muted shade of blue, purple, gray or green will wrap your family and guests in a virtual warm blanket.
Once you have selected the muted shade or shades to paint a room in your home as its base color, take time to think about what colors

to add from different palettes to define accent points in the room. When selecting these accent colors for furniture or accent walls, décor or other pieces, do so purposefully.
Ensure the shades match and complement each other and you are comfortable with them, so that you enjoy the room for years to come. Painting can be taxing, costly, messy, requires transporting furniture and covering it to protect it, so it isn’t something we plan on doing too often. Making the right choices for the colors to paint your home will take effort and a little dedication, so it is wise to make a commitment to it.
A muted shade of red can be exactly what you are looking for in a master bedroom. Complemented with gray accents, a muted shade of red can offer a romantic and even regal experience. It is a comfortable enough shade for rest and relaxation and can be stylish and elegant at the same time. A family room should be comfortable and not rigid or restrictive. A muted blue family room just might do the trick to develop a sense of bonding, relaxation and an overall feeling of the comfort of home. Some vivid blue accents to contrast the muted base will add style and depth.
Bedrooms in the home should illustrate the room’s occupant and their personality. A muted shade of orange that resembles peach can be used to add a feminine flair and some sophistication. In contrast, a muted shade of green which is on the paler side can add some masculinity and earthiness to another bedroom. Muted colors like mauve or lilac can lend themselves well to bedrooms, living or family rooms and can easily be paired with more vivid shades of pink or purple to add distinction.

A simple internet search can show you all the shades in the muted color palette so you can make your base color selections. You can also search for known complementary colors and select your favorite combinations. Muted colors are often the favorite of seasoned homeowners who have been through a few color palettes in their homes. The memories of many people’s childhood homes are in the muted color palette for a reason. The shades of muted colors speak the tones of home and offer the classic and quintessential feeling of home we all seek. p
