Toying with ideas When decorating a kid’s bedroom, there are a few things to keep in mind. Fun should be at the forefront and playful ideas are limitless. Your child might have a favorite color, theme or character and those ideas can be incorporated in the room in many ways. Look for examples and share

them with your child so they can select what they like best. Lissa Talavera, general manager of Furniture Kathy Style has some recommendations for decorating a kid bedroom that will promise fun and play for years to come. Talavera offered her top three things to consider when decorating
a child’s bedroom. The first is “less is more.” Talavera shared that the goal is to create a functional, yet super adorable space for your child to enjoy. “Keeping furnishings to a minimum will create more space for your child to do more of what they love to do: play,” she said. A
bed, desk, chest of drawers and bins for toys should be selected in sizes that don’t take up too much space. These furniture items can be accents for the room and can incorporate a pop of color. Speaking of color, the second continued on page 5

idea Talavera suggests is a neutral color palette for the entirety of the room. “Incorporating a neutral color palette will allow you to change the theme and vibe of the child’s room as he or she grows,” she said. “Keep your decor simple and add color through accessories, bedding and toys.” A room painted in a neutral shade will offer an easy way to dress up the space with other items to incorporate color. Bedding and toys or toy chests are a great way to add color and accents. Bedding can be changed to freshen the room throughout the year. It can be seasonal or based on a theme or even a favorite character. Wall art is another way to incorporate color over a neutral palette. Imagine an outer space or underwater themed bedroom with neutral walls but plenty of wall art to bring the theme to life. For the third and final suggestion, Talavera reminds us to maximize your child’s happy place. “Maximize your child’s space, by incorporating multifunctional pieces such as a loft bed with a play area or desk below.” Another idea she recommends is a trundle bed that will give the space an extra bed for fun sleepovers without utilizing additional floor or wall space. “Providing lots of storage and a ‘home’ for everything will help keep the clutter at bay and encourage your child to stay organized,” she said. Remember, you can change up and evolve the design and decorating of a kid’s bedroom as your child grows. It is always a good idea to get your child involved with the decorating of his or her space. When a child is given some say in the decorating of his or her bedroom, he or she will develop ownership of the space and it will be a more meaningful experience for the child overall. p

Kitchen lingo Our kitchen appliances do not require much from us for them to keep running smoothly. There is one major thing to keep in mind when you are caring for these appliances and want them to last for years to come. The refrigerator, freezer, stove, oven, dishwasher and microwave are the well-known appliances that occupy most kitchens. Most of these appliances can be kept running well for years and years as long as they are cared for properly. First and foremost, you must keep them clean. Simple regular cleaning of your appliances will keep them in tip-top condition and help them to perform for

a lifetime. Oftentimes, if your refrigerator is running warmer, or your stove won’t engage it is likely due to food build-up and after a good cleaning these appliances will run like new again. Keep refrigerator coils clean. This makes the refrigerator cool more efficiently and can save money on utility bills. You can clean the coils by vacuuming them a couple of times a year, especially if you have pets. Rubber gaskets on doors of refrigerators and freezers should also be cleaned of food build-up and unclean surfaces to ensure proper seals are met and the appliance closes properly. According to the HomeDepot.
com, “Your refrigerator houses both raw and cooked foods, as well as drinks and other items. It’s important to keep it hygienic. The easiest way to give it a thorough cleaning is to begin by removing all the food, the shelves and the drawers. Soak the drawers and shelves in water and dish soap while you wipe down the interior from the top down. Soap and water works best when cleaning the interior. Never use disinfectant cleaners like bleach, which can taint your food.” Stoves also get dirty from food build-up. “Stove tops are hot spots for food spills and drips, so clean it often to make sure your cooking
area remains sanitary. Remove the burner grates and soak them in dish soap and water. Clean loose food off the stove top and wipe down the back panel, stove top and burner knobs with a sponge or towel. Wipe down with a one-to-one mix of vinegar and water, or use dish soap and water if there’s built-up grease.” You must also observe the behavior of your appliances and see if they start behaving differently and if they can be set back to normal after a good cleaning. You will know the way the appliance operates after a short time and you will recognize when it starts to behave differently. p

Smarties We are in a new era when we design and decorate homes. Smartphones and other devices have taken center stage and people are ready to take their smart devices to the next level by using them to control home surroundings or to keep them safe. The latest and arguably greatest in-home innovation is incorporating smart home devices that will modernize and provide a digital experience in your home. There are several devices available to make your home smart and often these do not require a “hub” or central processor for all devices. Many of

these smart devices can be used independently as plug and play units. According to the HomeDepot. com, “A smart home is really an automated home. It lets you connect and program the right smart devices, smart appliances and smart gadgets so they serve your needs. You’ll open up your life to convenience, entertainment, security and savings.” Smart devices include security cameras, speakers, smart bulbs, plugs and outlets, dimmer switches, clocks and more that can communicate with your smartphone to control these devices
making your home as smart as they come. In order for these devices to work well, it is important to have a reliable and sound internet source and router so that your smart devices can communicate with your smart home devices. According to Home Depot, there are more than 40 smart home devices in stock at the Guam Home Depot location. The Guam location carries several security cameras, dimmer switches, plugs and other items that you can control with a touch of a finger. They are easy to set up and control with a smartphone or tablet and can be integrated with
Google Home or Alexa applications in the home. Also check your favorite telecom company for additional choices in smart appliances. Smart home devices make it easy to select music to be enjoyed by family and guests, lighting, security, and more. What is recommended is starting out small and eventually incorporating more devices that advance as time goes on. If you are building your home from the ground up, you should do plenty of research on how you can implement smart home features that you can expand on in the future. p

A whiter shade of pale Choosing soft pastels for the color palette in your home can offer a warm and gentle atmosphere in any room. When chosen carefully, the color palette can be sophisticated and chic. Pastels can actually brighten up a space and have become more popular in recent years. Lissa Talavera, general manager of Furniture Kathy Style had some insight on pastels and incorporating the color palette into your home.
Using pastels on accent pieces makes for a modern look.
“Incorporating pastels into your space introduces soft, soothing, and peaceful vibes,” said Talavera. “When designing a space, I typically pair pastels with white or grey.” When chosen correctly, the color palette can achieve an angelic, serene look and offer relaxing comfort. Recently, pastels have been fashionable due to their appeal for a minimalistic look and feel. The general manager shared some of her personal suggestions
and tips to help you achieve the look and vibe you desire when incorporating a pastel color palette in your home. “The goal is to achieve a sense of calmness, sophistication and joy,” she said. For a contemporary, modern vibe, Talavera suggests incorporating pastels on small accent pieces such as home decor, accent throw pillows, area rugs, or wall art. “A hint of black or grey is a must to
achieve a crisp, contemporary modern look,” she said. Talavera added that grey is the “new black” and can easily be incorporated with a pastel palette. She also suggests pairing pastels with bright white if that is more your style. Pastels can offer a tranquil setting to any room. They are especially pleasing in a bedroom or home office where stark white can look a little stiff and continued on page 10

uncomfortable. But with pastel shades of peach, green, yellow and blue, an ordinary room can be turned into a tranquil space. For a coastal, beachy vibe, Talavera recommends incorporating pastels using larger pieces, such as accent chairs, accent cabinets and tables. “Beautiful blue and green hues, paired with crisp white and driftwood greys can create a calming oasis for you to enjoy,” she said. Accent pieces in pastel shades are becoming more and more popular when decorating or redecorating. Finally for a sophisticated and welcoming feel, Talavera suggests warm white or beige walls paired with a soft pastel living room set or accent chairs. “This pairing will invite your guest to sit and stay awhile,” she said. The look can be inviting for family and guests when lighting is soft and warm, keeping in concert with the peaceful setting pastels provide. The color palette also looks great with natural elements such as fresh and/or dried plants or flowers. Wall art that in pastel shades can be a main accent focal point and can tie a whole room together. A pastel color palette looks like a soft musical piece — just colorful enough to set the mood, but subtle enough to allow for creative decorating. p
