A
living room atmosphere. Many restaurants aspire to it. Cafe-restaurant ‘t Postkantoor nails it. Maybe because the owners try their restaurant’s fittings at home first?
A concrete look combined with lots of wood furnishings. Rugs, glass lanterns and chairs that could belong to your grandmother. The interior of the post office is neat and at the same time cozy. No Parisian situations here where you sit on the lap of fellow guests. There is plenty of room, because it used to house a post office for over 115 years. “As a child I was queuing here for stamps. Later in life I picked up my public transport card,” explains owner Martijn Poot. “On the corner of the bar was a machine to pull a number. Further on were the counters. And where our terrace is now, mail trucks used to drive back and forth.” Although the name may suggest otherwise, there is little left of its history. “Everything was de6
molished when we bought the property. Unfortunately. It must be authentic, I think. However we still occasionally receive a call about misdirected mail.” Martijn runs the restaurant together with his wife Ellen Kruidhof. “We are a plus size eatery, with classic dishes like steak and sea bass fillet. We love a casual atmosphere. Therefore, there are seating areas with a sofa and a fireplace. When the tables are filled, it is dinner with the plate on your lap. “ It is no coincidence that their restaurant looks like thier own home. “We sample new items at home first. Like the 60’s seats. But once home and work resemble eachother too much, we throw things around.”

en huiskamersfeer. Veel restaurants ambiëren dat. Café-restaurant ‘t Postkantoor krijgt het voor elkaar. Misschien omdat de eigenaren de inrichting eerst zelf thuis uitproberen?
Een betonlook gecombineerd met veel houten meubels. Kleden, glazen lantaarns en stoelen die van je oma hadden kunnen zijn. De inrichting van ‘t Postkantoor is strak en knus tegelijk. Geen Parijse toestanden waarbij je bij de buren op schoot zit. Er is ruimte genoeg, want op deze plek zat 115 jaar lang een postkantoor. ‘Als kind stond ik hier in de
rij voor postzegels. Later haalde ik hier mijn ov-kaart op,’ legt eigenaar Martijn Poot uit. ‘Op de hoek van de bar stond een automaat waar je een nummertje trok. Verderop waren de balies. En waar nu ons terras is, reden postauto’s af en aan.’ Hoewel de naam misschien anders doet vermoeden, is er weinig zichtbaar van deze geschiedenis. ‘Alles was er uitgesloopt toen wij het pand kochten. Helaas. Het moet authentiek zijn, vind ik. Soms krijgen we wel nog een telefoontje met de mededeling dat de post verkeerd bezorgd is.’ Martijn runt samen met zijn vrouw Ellen Kruidhof het restaurant. ‘We zijn een eetcafé plus, met toegankelijke gerechten zoals steak en zeebaarsfilet. We houden van een informele sfeer. Daarom zijn er zitjes met een bank en een open haard. Wanneer de tafels vol zijn, wordt er gegeten met het bord op schoot.’ Dat het restaurant op hun eigen huis lijkt, is geen toeval. ‘We testen nieuwe elementen eerst thuis uit. Zoals die jaren ‘60 stoelen. Maar zodra huis en werk te veel op elkaar gaan lijken, gooien we de boel om.’ 7

ometimes you’ll have to squeeze in to enter the narrow store of Verkade & Jacques. Once you’re in pick an old-fashioned number. While you wait you can marvel at the many cheeses and other delicacies on display. The longer the wait, the more difficult the choice. “There are almost 400,” says Nellie Hannewijk with pride. “They’re mainly thermized and raw milk cheeses from artisan farms. They have a sharper flavor. Cheese from a supermarket is pasteurized, causing many flavors to be lost.” The buffalo cheese of a water buffalo farm in Drenthe is remarkable. And ever tasted bunker cheese? “This cheese ripens in an old bunker from World War II. The inside temperature is constant, making it ideal for the maturation process. Even old cheese retains its intense creamy taste,” she explains. The choice of foreign cheeses is immense. “This Swiss Mont d’Or has 14
just arrived. Look, there’s a crust of pine bark around it. Delicious as fondue. I just found the right sparkling wine to go with it.” Nellie is doing a study as viticulturist and advises wine-cheese combinations. Restaurants often ask her for advice on the composition of a cheese board. With tourists in mind, her employees know everything about exporting cheese. “Our store has a bit of a museum function. People can’t believe their eyes. I like to persuade customers to try something different than Gouda cheese.” No room for a block of cheese in your suitcase? Verkade & Jacques also sells sandwiches.

et is soms dringen in de pijpenla van Verkade & Jacques. Bij binnenkomst trek je een ouderwets ‘nummertje’. Terwijl je wacht kun je je vergapen aan de vele kazen en andere delicatessen. Hoe langer het wachten, hoe moeilijker de keuze wordt. ‘Het zijn er bijna 400,’ vertelt Nellie Hannewijk trots. ‘Het zijn vooral rauwmelkse en gethermiseerde kazen van ambachtelijke boerenbedrijven. Die zijn scherper van smaak. Kaas uit de supermarkt is gepasteuriseerd, daardoor gaan veel smaakstoffen verloren.’ Bijzonder is de buffelkaas van een waterbuffelboerderij uit Drenthe. En al eens bunkerkaas geproefd? ‘Deze kaas rijpt in een oude bunker uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De binnentemperatuur is heel constant, wat ideaal is voor het rijpingsproces. Zo behoudt zelfs de oude kaas een intens romige smaak,’ legt ze uit. Ook de keus in buitenlandse kazen is groot. ‘Deze Zwitserse Mont d’Or
is net binnengekomen. Kijk, er zit een schil van dennenschors omheen. Heerlijk als fondue. Ik heb er net een goede mousserende wijn bij gevonden.’ Nellie doet een opleiding als vinoloog en adviseert in wijn-kaascombinaties. Restaurants vragen haar om advies bij de samenstelling van het kaasplankje. Ook aan toeristen is gedacht. Haar medewerkers weten alles over het exporteren van kaas. ‘Onze winkel heeft een beetje een museumfunctie. Mensen kijken hun ogen uit. Ik vind het leuk om klanten over te halen eens wat anders te proberen dan Goudse kaas.’ Geen ruimte voor een stuk kaas in je koffer? Verkade & Jacques verkoopt ook belegde broodjes. 15

The victim was William of Orange, the man who fought for an independent Netherlands. The ancestor of King WillemAlexander. Museum Prinsenhof Delft was the crime scene.
“I love old things and what they tell us. Like these bullet holes in the wall. You can come so close to history ...” Maurice Wery is curator of the museum. William of Orange lived here in the 16th century. He just left the dining room when his killer appeared from behind a pillar. The fanatical Catholic, Balthasar Gerards fired and killed the Protestant prince. 36
An animated projection recreates the tension of that time. “It happened with a gun like this.” Maurice points to a wheel lock pistol from 1570. “It’s rather cynical that Gerards bought the gun from one of William’s own bodyguards. They thought he fought on the same side.” The States General forbade the making of any images of the dead prince. However, one Delft painter slipped inside. “Look, he was not a great artist, but it is an extraordinary painting.” Maurice talks enthusiastically about William of Orange. “Of course he also made mistakes, but William was an advocate of harmony. Our dialogue culture, the polder model, dates back to his time. He also pushed for what he called ‘liberty of conscience’. I would like to make July 10 a national “William-ofOrange-day.” The collection of Museum Prinsenhof also includes paintings from the 17th century, Delft Blue and stories about innovations from Delft. Like the microscope of Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek.

‘Dichter bij de Bar’, meaning both closer to the bar and poet at the bar, will take place in Delft’s old city centre. Nine bars and one theatre will host around 50 artists who give short performances. The Rietveld Theater 51 will function as main stage and festival headquarters. It’s here where you will find information, merchandise and the performance of the Night of the Language Arts, on Saturday evening. During this performance you can not hide, there will be performances everywhere. The complete festival guide will be available in the middle of January, with special attention to performances suitable for international visitors. Performances in bars are for free. However for the Night of the Language Arts an entry ticket needs to be purchased, available at the Rietveld Theater.
Tijdens het festival Dichter bij de Bar fungeert het Rietveld Theater 51 als festivalhart, met info, merchandise en optredens. Daarnaast performen dichters, singer-songwriters, rappers en prozaïsten in negen Delftse horecagelegenheden. Het programmaboekje wordt medio januari in heel Delft verspreid. Hierin staat duidelijk vermeld welke optredens geschikt zijn voor buitenlandse bezoekers. Op de zaterdagavond van het festival vindt de Nacht van de Taalkunst plaats. Bekende namen laten zich dan horen in het Rietveld Theater, naast hun eigen artiesten en ambitieuze amateurs. Coördinator Menno Smit ziet overal nieuwe uitdagingen en doelgroepen, van peuter tot bejaarde en scholier tot docent. “Wij willen bijvoorbeeld een uurtje Blind Poëten, waarbij de theaterzaal van het Rietveld volledig donker wordt gemaakt de artiesten in het donker optreden en het publiek de performance als blinde ervaart.
