Prinsenhof Delft is proud to announce the return of Vermeer’s masterwork ‘The Little Street’. A first in 320 years, the painting will be on temporary exhibit in the city where it once was painted: here in the heart of Delft. Come and admire until the 17th of July 2016.
The happy occasion of this special exhibit is the recent and long-awaited discovery of the actual location of Vermeer’s painting: For more than a hundred years historians searched for the little alleyway Vermeer depicted, which was ‘somewhere in the vicinity of the Vlamingstraat’. Now Professor Frans Grijzenhout has produced careful findings which point to the Vlamingstraat, today, house numbers 40-42, as the exact position on the painting. You can follow the course of Dr Grijzenhout’s research set-by-step in the exhibition, alongside theories by six other art historians. The town of Delft was a popular painter’s subject in Vermeer’s day, and we’re delighted to 10
exhibit work by several of Vermeer’s contemporaries, including the renowned painter Pieter de Hooch. Plus, we’ve got a special bonus: come and be mystified by the cryptic ‘escape box’, invented especially for this exhibition: solve the puzzles and try to escape from Vermeer’s studio within the time limit! The exhibition ‘Vermeer’s Homecoming’ can also be the starting point for a historic trail through Delft: as you leave the museum just download the app and allow yourself to be led past places of interest and importance to Vermeer by means of film and audio material. useum Prinsenhof Delft brengt Het straatje terug naar Delft. Voor het eerst in 320 jaar is het beroemde werk van Johannes Vermeer weer te zien in de stad waar het geschilderd is: bij ons in Delft. Het is hier te bewonderen tot en met 17 juli 2016.
Aanleiding voor de tijdelijke verhuizing van het meesterwerk is het recente onderzoek van professor dr. Frans Grijzenhout naar de locatie van Het straatje. Al bijna een eeuw wordt er gezocht naar de plek die de 17de eeuwse meester op zijn wereldberoemde werk heeft afgebeeld. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat het de Vlamingstraat moet zijn geweest, ter hoogte van de huidige nummers 40-42. In de tentoonstelling is het onderzoek stap voor stap te volgen, net als de theorieën van zes andere (kunst)historici. Andere schilderijen in de tentoonstelling laten zien hoe Vermeers tijdgenoten de stad Delft in beeld brachten, zoals de werken van de bekende schilder Pieter de Hooch. Bij de tentoonstelling is bovendien een speciale escapebox ontworpen. Los de raadsels en puzzels op, en probeer op tijd uit het atelier van Vermeer te komen! De tentoonstelling Vermeer komt thuis strekt zich uit over de binnenstad van Delft. Als u het museum verlaat, kunt u een app downloaden die u meeneemt op een wandelroute door het historische centrum. Aan de hand van film- en audiofragmenten leert u Vermeer en de plekken die belangrijk waren in zijn leven, nog beter kennen. De app ‘Waar is Vermeer?’ is gratis te downloaden.

trolling through Delft is wonderful because of its canals, facades and historic buildings. But also the many different shops make it wonderful like ladies boutique O’DONNA for example. Owner Odette Dorjee was spoon-fed with entrepreneurship. “My parents ran a sports shop. I sometimes skipped school to assist in the shop when I was 15-years old.” Ten years ago she opened her own shop in Delft. She sells brands in different price ranges, such as LTB and Goosecraft. “I select clothes on the criteria of quality an fit. I like muted little color combinations and less prints. It’s a must if the seam doesn’t scratch you, and the buttons don’t come off. This is so true if you’re a woman.” In the shop you can look around and ask for extended advice, but be warned... Odette: “Customers always get honest advice. I can only sell something which I support. I recently 22
sold a dress to a woman who was 50 years old. She had never worn a dress. At the end of the party she sent me a picture with pride. That makes me happy.” Gradually Odette’s own shop is becoming a family business. “My three daughters are my Facebook models and their moodboards are on display in the store.” Her twin daughters regularly help in the shop. Developing a passion for this trade doesn’t just fall from the sky. “Imagine: I actually phoned my daughters in sick from school if they were prepared to come along when buying new stock. Alarming, isn’t it?!”

truinen door Delft is heerlijk vanwege de grachten, geveltjes en monumentale panden. Maar ook de vele winkeltjes máken de binnenstad, zoals damesboetiek O’DONNA aan de Molslaan. Bobbie
Eigenaresse Odette Dorjee kreeg het ondernemen met de paplepel ingegoten. ‘Mijn ouders hadden een sportzaak. Als 15-jarige spijbelde ik soms om in de winkel te kunnen helpen.’ Tien jaar geleden opende ze haar eigen winkel in Delft. Ze verkoopt er merken in verschillende prijsklassen, zoals: LTB en Goosecraft. ‘De kleding selecteer ik op basis van de stofkwaliteit en pasvorm. Ik houd van rustige kleurencombinaties en weinig prints. Ook de details moeten kloppen. Het is fijn als naden niet irriteren en de knopen van je bloes perfect zitten. Zeker als vrouw.’ In de winkel kun je rustig rondkijken en uitgebreid om advies vragen, maar wees gewaarschuwd... Odette: ‘Klanten krijgen altijd eerlijk advies.
Ik kan alleen iets verkopen waar ik achter sta. Laatst verkocht ik een jurk aan een vrouw die 50 jaar werd. Ze had nog nooit een jurk gedragen. Aan het eind van de feestavond appte ze me trots een foto. Dan stap ik heel blij in bed.’ Langzamerhand wordt Odettes eigen winkel ook een familiebedrijf. ‘Mijn drie dochters zijn mijn Facebookmodellen en in de winkel hangen de moodboards die ze maken.’ De tweeling van zeventien staat nu ook regelmatig zelf in de winkel. Die liefde voor het vak komt niet uit de lucht vallen... ‘Ik meldde mijn dochters ziek op school als ze mee wilden naar een inkoopdag. Erg hé?’

Restaurant ‘De Waag’ has a unique location. ‘Waag’, the Dutch word for ‘scales’, reveals the building’s historic purpose: this was the weighing house, where local merchants once bustled about with their wares. Today it’s just a question of fine wines and great food. The formidable set of scales that hang from the ceiling date back to 1647.

They’re the silent testimony to an era in which this weighing house was the local hot spot of trade and commerce. The impressive dusky interior walls and the wooden beams are all original features. That they’ve survived is a small miracle if you consider to which ends the building had been squandered during the 20th century: a brief period as a theatre was followed by a time as a parking facility for bicycles. In 1999 the building was restored and since 2006 Dylan Coll has been proprietor of the establishment. ‘This place is the dream-café for every kid who wanted to go into the restaurant business,’ Coll tells us. “Talk about charisma and ambience. Tourists come in here mouths gaping, and some stumble at the stone steps because they’re so busy looking up and around. ‘Running a restaurant in an old building like this isn’t always easy. Its Monument status does limit one’s options. My kitchen staff, for instance, would love to have a roomier work-space.’ The challenge involves maintaining the unique historic atmosphere and being an excellent restaurant at the same time. In oppose to Amsterdam or The Hague, Delft’s locals are critical about where they go out, and they’ll complain right away if disappointed. ‘This isn’t a bad thing, because it keeps us on our toes.’ One glance at the cutlery pouches will confirm this open-to-criticism attitude: you’ll find three feedback questions printed there.
Eetcafé en restaurant De Waag zit in een bijzonder pand. Waar nu mensen bij elkaar komen om te eten en te drinken, kwamen vroeger handelaren bij elkaar om hun waren te wegen. Aan het plafond hangt een grote waag uit 1647. Het is een stille getuige uit de tijd dat het Waaggebouw het centrum van de lokale handel was. Ook de muren en de houten balken zijn authentiek. Een klein wonder, want het gebouw werd in de twintigste eeuw gebruikt als theater en zelfs als fietsenstalling. In 1999 is het gerestaureerd en sinds 2006 is Dylan Coll de eigenaar van het café en restaurant. ‘Het is de jongensdroom van elke horecaondernemer. Dit pand heeft een goed charisma en alles straalt historie uit. Toeristen komen binnen met een wow-gevoel. Sommigen struikelen omdat ze het afstapje
niet zien; ze blíjven omhoog kijken.’ Een horecagelegenheid runnen in een oud gebouw is niet altijd makkelijk. ‘Er zijn beperkingen door de monumentale status. Mijn keukenpersoneel zou graag een grotere keuken willen. Helaas kan dat niet, maar dit is tevens de uitdaging: de sfeer behouden en tegelijkertijd goede horeca neerzetten. Delftenaren zijn een kritisch publiek. Anders dan in steden als bv. Den Haag en Amsterdam, zeggen ze het meteen als ze een negatieve ervaring hebben. ‘Prima, zo blijven we vakkundig en scherp.’ Die instelling zie je zelfs terug in het bestekzakje: daar staan drie feedbackvragen op. 39

The Delft Marina ~~~
48 The Delft marina is an excellent base for a couple of wonderful days in this lovely historical town in Dutch province of South Holland. Mooring in Delft for recreational purposes has growing popularity: last year alone, almost 1700 recreational vessels and 118 charters moored in Delft for a spot of sight-seeing and relaxation. ~ Sanitary facilities are available at the harbour offices, Hooikade 13. You can make use of the shower facilities and the washing machines and dryer on location. You can also drop off your used water at this facility. The beautiful historic citycentre of Delft is within walking distance of the harbour and can be reached via a thoroughfare under the ‘Kapelsbrug’. Within five minutes you will find yourself in the city centre. The quaint streets are already an experience in themselves: you wander along 46
historic gables, hundred-year-old canals and little alley ways. In the most unexpected places you may find hidden-away courtyards and many unique little shops. The citycentre also has numerous cafés and restaurants and beautiful market squares where you can sit and have coffee outside. As soon as the sun comes out the streets become lively and vibrant. Main attractions are, to name a few, the Old Church (1350), the New Church (1496), and a visit to the museum ‘Prinsenhof Delft.’ In the Delft Vermeer Centrum you will find out all you want to know about the famous 17th century Delft painter Johannes Vermeer. Furthermore, ‘De Porceleyne Fles,’ where the famous Delft Blue pottery is made, lies just outside the city centre, and is also within walking distance of the marina.

op zich. U loopt langs prachtige historische gevels, eeuwenoude grachten en steegjes. Op de meest onverwachte plekken vindt u soms bijna verstopte sfeervolle hofjes en vele unieke winkeltjes. De binnenstad van Delft telt bovendien talloze horecagelegenheden en prachtige pleinen met sfeervolle terrassen. Zodra het zonnetje schijnt, is het er een drukte van belang. Hoogtepunten bij een bezoek aan de stad zijn onder andere de Oude Kerk en de Nieuwe Kerk en het Museum Prinsenhof Delft. In het Vermeer Centrum Delft komt u alles te weten over Johannes Vermeer, de wereldberoemde Delftse schilder uit de zeventiende eeuw. De Porceleyne Fles, waar het beroemde Delfts blauw wordt gemaakt, ligt even buiten het centrum, maar bevindt zich, net als alle andere bezienswaardigheden van Delft, op loopafstand van de haven. 47

t Pauline Bloembinders the love for flower-arranging has been elevated to an art form. So, don’t come expecting a simple bunch of roses adorned only with apples leaves or gypsophila.
The first impression is that of a lush, green wilderness. Pauline’s shop is filled literally to the brim. In front are wooden tables with fresh flowers, and toward the back are large vases filled with silken flowers. On closer inspection you’ll discover dolls clad in green and surprising compositions under bell-glasses. Starting out in the trade more than thirty years ago, Pauline Brouwer has since become known for her distinctive style. Appreciated by customers and by clients alike – it’s nice to know that the mayor’s office is always adorned with a signaturestyle bouquet by Pauline. Pauline tends to choose unusual flowers first and then accentuate the arrangement until she has an artful bouquet. “No frills, please,” she insists, though. “Flowers form a bouquet in the most natural way 50
possible, something like capturing a field of flowers in a vase,” says Pauline. To add to exclusivity, the shop is only open on three days of the week. “Periods of rest are great for opening the doors to inspiration and creativity. Go with the flow,” she’ll tell you. Contrary to what you might expect, this profession was not a childhood dream of hers. “I wanted to get creative and just rolled into this trade. I hooked up with the right people when I worked as a trainee. I learned a lot from an artist friend of mine, who took me out of my comfort zone. My career is like a tree: the roots are firmly grounded, but people that cross my path shape its branches.” Pauline Florist’s is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. On other days she works by appointment only.

erwacht bij Pauline Bloembinders geen bosje rozen met appelblad en gipskruid. Dit is geen confectiebloemist. Hier wordt de liefde voor bloemen tot een kunstvorm verheven.
Weelderig, dat is de eerste indruk. Het oude winkelpand van Pauline is tot de nok toe gevuld. Voorin staan houten tafels met verse bloemen. Achterin vind je grote vazen met zijden boeketten. Wie wat langer kijkt, ontdekt etalagepoppen bekleed met groen en verrassende composities onder stolpen. In de dertig jaar dat Pauline in het vak zit, heeft ze een kenmerkende stijl ontwikkeld die bekend is bij particulieren en bedrijven. In de burgemeesterskamer bijvoorbeeld, staat altijd een boeket van haar hand. Ze kiest graag bijzondere exemplaren en voegt verschillende bloemen samen tot een geheel. En vooral geen fratsen. ‘Bloemen steek je zo natuurlijk mogelijk, alsof je een bloemenveld in een vaas vangt.’

De wortels zitten vast, maar de mensen op mijn pad geven de takken vorm.’ De winkel van Pauline Bloembinders is open op donderdag, vrijdag en zaterdag. De andere dagen werkt ze op afspraak. 51
