John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 7 Saturday, 9 May 2015

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Tuggeranong (2) v Wests (3) @ Viking Park, Erindale First Grade: 3.25pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm Previous Result: Tuggeranong 32 defeated Wests 31 – Rd 2, 2015 Viking’s suffered their first loss of 2015 in their 2014 Grand Final Replay against The Whites. Queanbeyan jumped out to a big lead and unfortunately Tuggeranong were unable to reel them in going down by 4 points. Tuggeranong have since had the bye, giving them plenty of time to address the issues that let them down in round 5. This weekend’s clash, Vikings will see the return of Sione Taulua to an all NRC represent front row. Huge second rower Senio Teloafoa will also get his first taste in the run on side while Tim Cree will return for his second match after an extend time out of the game. Wests were able to hang on in the dying moment and deny the Owls another last minute victory against the Lions as North Oval. Wests shot out to a 24-7 lead just after half time, but the Owls clawed their way back to be 24-21 behind before a try to Ratu Tagive in the final play of the game prevent any competition points going to the Owls. Wests have made a large number of changes due to injuries and unavailability which will really test their depth. Despite the changes, expect Wests to still put a strong front and try and disrupt Vikings right from the kick off.

Royals (5) v Queanbeyan (1) @ Phillip Oval, Phillip First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Queanbeyan 34 defeated Royals 27 – Rd 2, 2015 Royals have re-joined the winners after a vital bonus point victory against the Eagles. Three first half tries to Brumby Lausii Taliauli really showed Royals attacking intent. Fly half Crag McMahon had an impressive day with the boot kicking 7 from 7. Wayne Southwell has made a few changes this weekend, seeing Jason Swain return and slotting into outside centre and Otto Wrakonei getting a start on the wing. An unchanged forward pack for Royals will be crucial as they tackle one Queanbeyan very physical and dominate pack. Queanbeyan continued their perfect start, securing their first bit of silverware for the season after defeating Easts 608 in the inaugural Peter ‘Froggy’ Morton Memorial Cup. Billy Chalker and OJ Noa were standouts in attack, both getting across the line 3 times in the 10 try romping. This week will be a tougher challenge, as Royals look to stay in touch with the top 4 push to secure back to back victories. The Whites have Carl Elliot and Sokai Tai returning to the pack this weekend, while an injury to form half back Mitch Douch has seen the whole backline move in a position. This game will be won in the forwards and there are a number of key match ups in the packs, none more so than the battle of the numbers 8’s and blind side flankers.

Easts (6) v Gungahlin (7) @ Griffith Oval, Griffith First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm Previous Result: Easts 35 defeated Gungahlin 31 – Rd 2, 2015 Easts will be disappointed in their efforts against an impressive Queanbeyan outfit, but have a chance to redeem themselves this weekend against the Eagles they upset in round 2. If they are to get the win this weekend, they will have to do it without captain and front rower James Douglas who suffered an unfortunate injury in the dying moments of the clash. Gungahlin were unable to contain Royals who were at their attacking best on the weekend and as a result still remain winless. But the Eagles will see this game as a great opportunity to kick start their and will be want to revenge there last minute loss to the Beasties. The Eagles have made a number of changes to their side which has ACT & Australia Barbarians U20’s player Jamie Kotz get his first run on start in 1st Grade on the wing. Mitch Connolly will shuffle back to Open side flanker after a brief return to his more known position of Outside Centre. Luke Ashwin will also get a start in the backline at Inside Centre.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals 2nd grade were able to just get past Gungahlin Eagles last weekend winning 19-17. In the end it came down to goal kicking with both teams scoring 3 tries. Queanbeyan also managed to just secure the competition points against Easts, winning 14-0. Queanbeyan currently sit undefeated and will be out improve on last week’s performance. These two played back in round 2 where Queanbeyan made light work of Royals winning 40-0.

We have a clash of the heavy weights this weekend in colts and will be the match of the round. Royals continue their unbeaten run defeating Gungahlin 607 thanks to a hat trick from Sam Ross. This is Sam Ross’ third hat-trick of the season. Queanbeyan will be fresh from the bye and looking to bounce back after their loss to Tuggeranong in round 5. The last time these two played, Royals were far too good winning 43-12. Except this game to be a lot closure then before.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals 3rd Grade were unable to chase down Gungahlin, finishing just short which still leaves them without a win for 2015. There task against Queanbeyan will not be that easy as the Whites racked up a 90-0 score line against Easts who are also winless. These two met in round 1 of the 3rd and 4th grade draw and Queanbeyan showered there dominant strike power winning 45-5.

Royals currently sit atop of the 4th grade ladder thanks to their bonus point win against Gungahlin. Rob Singhi and Peni Nifo scored doubles for Royals in their 6 tries to 4 match. Like Colts, Queanbeyan are also coming of a bye but they haven’t played since round 3 where they put 50 points on Wests. These two did not play in their first encounter due to a forfeit by Queanbeyan so this match could be very close or a blow out to either side.

MATCH PREVIEW Easts will be gain a lot of positives out of their performance against Queanbeyan, going down by 14 points. Easts were able to frustrate Queanbeyan into make a number of errors. Gungahlin on the other hand will be frustrated they were unable to come away with a win against Royals. A win would have seen the Eagles close the gap on the top four. These two drew back in round 2, so this could be another close game.

Gungahlin will riding high after securing their 2nd win of the season and now sit just one point outside the top 4 and 3 points from the top spot. Easts on the other hand will be doing all that is possible to turn around a disappointing match against Queanbeyan. Playing at home though, expect Easts to be a different side.

MATCH PREVIEW This will be the 3rd Grade match of the round as both teams sit 3rd and 4th on the ladder and on equal competition points. Wests suffered their first loss to the Owls last weekend, while Vikings have had a 2 week break. The Lions roared when these two met early this season, winning comprehensively 53-19, but Vikings haven’t lost since then.

Like 3rd grade this will be the match of the round in 4th grade as both clubs sit 2nd and 3rd on the ladder with 4 points separating them. Wests had a huge win against the Owls which gave them a crucial bonus point to get them above Queanbeyan on the ladder. Tuggeranong won their first encounter 35-14 and a win this weekend could see them jump to first on the ladder.

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:

SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION

Round 3 only saw two fixtures being played and of those fixtures the ADFA v Cooma 1st Grade was the match to watch. ADFA finally got their season up and running holding on to defeat the Red Devils 24-20. Goal kicking proved to be the difference with both clubs scoring 4 tries. The win has propelled ADFA into the top 4, whereas Cooma still remain on top thanks to gaining 2 valuable bonus points. In their 2nd Grade fixtures, Cooma won 20-0 due as a result of the forfeit by ADFA.

Braidwood have flexed their muscles in the South Coast zone handing 2014 Champion Batemans Bay their first loss of the season. The win was very comprehensive as the Redbacks outscored their opponents 34-5 thanks to a double from Bill Halligan.

The battle of the Hume Highway was a one sided affair as Goulburn held Yass scoreless in both grades. 1st Grade won 66-0 with Mitch Webb scoring a hattrick and Dom Falk kicking 8/10, while 2nd grade scored 5 tires to win 34-0. Both Goulburn sides have a perfect record and a game in hand with a number of rescheduled matches being played in the next few weeks. Round 4 there is only the one fixture due to ADFA and RMC unavailability and that is between The Rams and the Bushrangers. Yass are desperate for a win in 1st Grade compared to Hall who sit comfortable in 3rd on the ladder. A win to Hall will definitely separate the top 3 from the bottom 3. Jindabyne have jumped to the top of table demolishing Taralga 53-0. Notable try scorer Matt Caldwell crossed for a hat-trick in the 9 try a-thon. This is consecutive weeks the Bushpigs have scored over 50 points and kept their opponents scoreless. Bungendore have continued their promising form thus far, defeating Crookwell 24-10, but missed out on a 4 try bonus point win, something they haven’t done yet this season. The dolphins put on a show for their first home game of the year, running riot against Bay Red 5714. The team scored 9 tries to 2 and had no issue with their attack. After the weekends results we have 5 teams all within a win of each other and slotting into the vital top 4. This weekend’s fixtures will certain see some change in the ladder. Match of the round in Monaro will be Jindabyne v Crookwell, while in the South Coast Broulee and Braidwood are only separated by one point so it is a crucial clash early in the competition. The remaining games will be Boorowa v Bungendore and Milton v Batemans Bay. TEAM Jindabyne* Milton*

CLUB RUGBY PHOTOS – 2015 By Nick Guoth

2015 WOMEN’S COMPETITION – ROUND 1 The Women’s Competition finally gets underway after participating in a total of 3 preseason carnivals. These carnival held at Phillip Oval and ANU North Oval starting on the 11th April and concluding last weekend. The teams that participated were Royals, Uni-Norths and new comers Gungahlin and Tuggeranong. The girls played two 7’s carnivals and 10’s carnival given them an opportunity to building numbers and prepare for the 15’s season. Before the carnivals took place, Uni-Norths, Royals and Gungahlin all took part in a 3 way 10’s match at Canberra Stadium before the Brumbies took on the Force. This year the girls 15’s competition will be played again over 10 rounds, playing 8 matches before aligning with the John I Dent Cup Final Series in late July. Each club will also be scheduled to play a match against ADFA/RMC who were unable to committee to the full season, but look to building for the 2016 season. Round 1, Tuggeranong will host defending champions Uni-Norths, while runners up Royals will take on Gungahlin. Both games are at 1.35pm. Best of luck to all clubs in this year’s competition and no doubt this will be another exciting season in women’s rugby union.
