JOHN I DENT CUP MATCH OF THE ROUND Wests vs. Royals 3:05pm Kick Off – Radford College

Uni-Norths vs. Easts – Portsea Oval, RMC 3:05pm Queanbeyan vs. Gungahlin – Campese Field, 3:05pm Tuggeranong – Bye

John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 1 Saturday, 21st March 2015 The much anticipated 2015 season kicks off this weekend with some outstanding matches taking place. This season will be contested over 17 rounds for 1st, 2nd & Colts whereas 3rd and 4th Grade will play 14 rounds. All clubs have been working hard in the off and pre season and now the competition is here, clubs will be excited to test what they have been working on in preparation for this year’s John I Dent Cup. Again, Tuggeranong will be the team to beat after securing their 4th consecutive title, however the reaming 6 clubs are all of the belief they can be the ones lifting the John I Dent Cup on August 8th. With that in mind, we can except this season to see some upsets, plenty of champagne rugby, nail biting finishes and of course some outstanding sportsmanship.

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Wests (2014 – 4th) v Royals(2014 – 5th) @ Radford College, Bruce First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm Previous Result: Wests 30 defeated Royal 19 – RD 8, 2014 The Lions 2014 season saw them scrape into the finals one point clear of Royals before bowing out in disappointing fashion at the hands of Gungahlin. For 2015, Wests will be focusing on defence and consistency and if they can successfully do so, result will come their way and they will be hard to beat. Round 1, Wests have a very impressive back row in Michael Smith, Sean Doyle and Fotu Auelua who will without a doubt cause havoc at the break down. In the backs, Peter Raines will set the platform with both forwards and backs, while fast finishers Jesse Mogg and Drew Southwell will be looking for the ball out wide and with plenty of space. For Royals a couple of poor results throughout the 2014 season cost them a spot in the finals, so this year under new coach Wayne Southwell, Royals will be looking to turn those frustrating results around. An injury to Macdougal Medal runner up Pedro Rolando has given colt Pat Rumble his 1st Grade debut. Pat played for the ACT U20’s this year and will not look out of place this weekend. The forward pack this year will be led by Tyson Tamihere and Jay Cash, while number 8 Steve Sione will be a handful. Veterans Craig McMahon and Tim Cornforth will be the generals for an inexperienced back line, however this will be a great opportunity for these new players to step up and nail down there positions.

Queanbeyan (2014 – Runners up) v Gungahlin (2014 – 3rd) @ Campese Oval, Queanbeyan First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Gungahlin 19 defeated Queanbeyan 14 – RD 13, 2014 Queanbeyan kick start their campaign to go one better than 2014 at home against Gungahlin, a team they have had many close encounters with. The Whites have named a very strong outfit blessed with youth and experience. Aiden Kentworthy has made the change from back row to outside centre, last year’s 9 and 10 combination Josh White and Billy Chalker have shifted to be a new 10 & 12 combo. Carl Elliot, Sokai Tai, OJ Noa and Ratu Tagive will turn out for the first time in Queanbeyan colours and will be out to impress. Gungahlin have new coach Dan Atkins at the helm in 2015 and he will be looking to kick start his 1st grade coaching debut with a win. The Eagles this year have lost a number of experienced players, but what that has done is giving players coming through a great chance to show what they have got. Gungahlin have 3 players in the run on side who have been in the ACT 7’s program and will very dangerous in attack. The battle of the backlines will be very exciting this weekend and we can expect plenty of running rugby.

Uni-Norths (2014 – 6th) v Easts (2014 – 7th) @ Portsea Oval, RMC - Duntroon First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm Previous Result: Uni-Norths 36 defeated Easts 22 - RD 14, 2014 The Owls were able to turn around a dreadful 2013 season, to secure 5 wins and be the cause of a number of upsets. With that in the mind, Uni-Norths will need to take into this season the belief that they can mix it with the best and be a threat. Uni-Norths have made a number of changes to last year side for round 1 which will see Ray Dobson, Tevita Vahai, Leti tago, Gareth Watts & Lourens De Beer don the Owls kit for the first time. Easts welcome the services of Coach John Ross who will be out to turn around the Easts club in 2015 after an unfortunate 2014. The boys from Griffith will be excited to turn over a new leaf and what better way to do it then against Uni-Norths, a club they have played many of exciting matches against. The Easts Beasts forward pack will be led by Joe Shirely and James Douglas, while the backs will be threating with the likes of Darcy Eason at fly half and fullback Gerhardus Pretorius.

MATCH PREVIEW In round 1 we have a replay of last year’s Preliminary final where Queanbeyan were victorious 24-17. The Whites have been quiet successful in 2nd grade in the last couple of years, finishing as runners up in 2014 and winning the trophy in 2013. Gungahlin’s side has a great amount of experience in it and will be very tough to beat. This match is sure to be a very physical encounter.

Like their 2nd grade side, Queanbeyan have also been very strong in colts, narrowly missing out on the colts title in 2014, losing by 2 points to Vikings. This year there are a number of new faces in Queanbeyan’s side and they will be keen to continue on from the previous year’s success. The Eagles have had a number of trial games in the lead up to round one and will be out to cause a few upsets in 2015. The battle of the packs in the match will be exciting to watch.

MATCH PREVIEW Wests and Royals were evenly matches last year, with Wests edging Royals out of finals contention by one competition point. Both sides have a number of colts graduating into the grades this year which will provide the clubs with a good mix of youth and experience. This game will be a tight contest and could go down to the wire. Being round 1, everyone will be excited to finally be on the paddock competition for competition points.

Wests will be looking to improve on last year’s results after finishing 6th. With a number of new players and returning players, we can expect the Lions to threaten sides and push for a finals birth. Royals were finalist last year and are aiming to build from that success. Like Wests, Royals also have a number of new and returning players.

Expectations of Behaviour Guidelines The Expectations of Behaviour Guidelines are a simple outline for parents, teachers, coaches and players to ensure everyone is given the opportunity to enjoy the game to the maximum level. Rugby has always been a game that prides itself on fair play and enjoyment for all, so please adhere to these guidelines to ensure this continues. For further information, please go to www.rugby.com.au/communityrugby These guidelines have been developed to: - Maintain the elements of enjoyment and satisfaction in Rugby; - Make adults aware that young people play to satisfy themselves and not necessarily to satisfy adults or members of their own peer group; - Improve the physical fitness of youth by encouraging participation in Rugby by making it attractive, safe and enjoyable for all young people; and - Constantly remind administrators, coaches, teachers, referees and parents that Rugby must be administered, taught and provided, for the good of those young people who wish to play the game. It is their game. Players -

Play for enjoyment, not just to please your parents, teacher or coach. Play by the laws of the game. Never argue with the referee’s decision. Let your captain or coach ask any necessary questions. Control your temper – no ‘mouthing off’. Work equally hard for yourself and for your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will your own. Be a good sport. Applaud all the good play, whether it is done by your team or your opponent. Shake hands with all of the opposing team at the conclusion of the match, and clap them off in the spirit of good sportsmanship. Treat all players as you yourself would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take advantage of any player. Treat everyone equally regardless of sex, disability, ethnic origin or religion. Remember that the goals of the game are - to have fun, improve your skills and feel good. Co-operate with your coach, teacher, team mates, referee and opponents, for without them you do not have a game.

Parents/Spectators - Remember that young people are involved in Rugby for their enjoyment, not yours. - Encourage your children to play by the laws. - Teach young people that honest effort is as important as victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment. - Remember that young people learn best by example. Applaud good play from both teams. - Do not publicly question the referee’s judgement and never his/her honesty. - Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from the game. - Recognise the importance of volunteer coaches, teachers and referees. They give their time and resources to provide a game for young participants. Coaches/Teachers -

Be reasonable in your demands on the young player’s time, energy and enthusiasm. Teach your players the laws of the game and for them to play within the laws. Ensure that all players get a game. The ‘just average’ players need and deserve equal time. Remember that young people play for fun and enjoyment and that winning is only a part of it. Never ridicule the players for making errors or losing a game. Be professional and accept responsibilities for your actions. Display high standards in language, behaviour, manner, dress, punctuality and preparation. Develop team respect for the ability of opponents, as well as the judgement of referees and opposing coaches. Discourage excessive talk on the field. Insist on a disciplined approach by the players.
