John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 2 Saturday, 28 March 2015
MATCH OF THE ROUND: Queanbeyan (1) v Royals (5) @ Campese Oval, Queanbeyan First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Queanbeyan 18 defeated Royals 10 – Rd 12, 2014 Queanbeyan got there season off to a perfect start with a bonus point victory over the Eagles. The win wasn’t easy and wasn’t secured until the final stages of the second half however 2 tries to new recruits OJ Noa & Sokai Tai proved to be the difference. Only one change has been made to the Whites forward pack with the return of Captain Dan Penca. While in the backs, Anthony Bozzato & Doug Lancaster will start on the wing. Royals 2015 campaign start didn’t go as planned with Wests grinding out a 10-0 victory. The loss was made even more disappointing as Royals were unable to capitalise on 14 man Wests side for most of the 2nd half. A number of changes has been made by Wayne Southwell which see’s Nick Tankey getting a crack at half back, Brendan Woodward at the all-important openside breakaway and new recruit Ryan Kotlewski at prop. Liam Slater returns for Royals which will boost the back line as will the inclusion of brumbies flyer Lausii Taliailu. Expect this game to have it all; physicality, running rugby, plenty of emotion and of course sportsmanship which is why this game is the match of the round.
Wests (3) v Tuggeranong (4) @ Radford College, Bruce First Grade: 3.15pm, Reserve Grade: 1.50pm, Colts: 12.25pm Previous Result: Wests 39 defeated Tuggeranong 31 – Rd 13, 2014 Wests win on the weekend wasn’t the prettiest, but the slugfest will have prepared them as they face the defending champions. These two teams have had some memorable clashes and this could be the same. Wests will be without Ben Coutts who is serving a suspension, however that gives a great opportunity for Mitch Lee to step into 1st grade. Like last week, The Lions will have the luxury of 3 brumbies players, but have made some changes in their back line most notable Joe Smellie shift from fly half to inside centre and Ratu Tagive coming in from the wing to outside centre. The Tuggeranong Vikings title defence gets underway this weekend and they will be tested first game taking on Wests. Vikings have a large number of their starting side which played in 2014 as well a handful that continued on to higher honours participating in the NRC. With such experience on board, you can expect Viking to step in up another level as they go out to pursue their 5th consecutive title. Watch for Joe Powell and Rodney Iona to always be an attacking threat. Key matchups for this clash with be the battle of the fullbacks and also the battle of the 7’s. Both Doyle and Hitchens are guaranteed to be menaces at the breakdown and will look to one up each other the whole game.
Gungahlin (7) v Easts (6) @ Burgmann Anglican School First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm Previous Result: Gungahlin 46 defeated Easts 8 – Rd 12, 2014 The Eagles will be out to bounce back from a game that could have went either way during the latter stages of match against Queanbeyan. Some poor defensive efforts proved to be the difference in the end, however these can easily be fixed. Gungahlin will be boosted by the return of Pato Noriega which will add some grunt and go forward up front. Mitch Ward will make his first grade debut at half back, so watch for him as he looks to make a statement in this clash. James Dargville will turn out for the red and black for the second time but his first competition game and will add some hard & direct running in the back line. Easts first game for 2015 ended in a 20-5 lost at the hands of Uni-Norths. The Beasties, were able to hold Uni scoreless for a while in the first half but went into the break 10-5 behind thanks to an impressive finish by young winger Tim Turner. Unfortunately that was as close as it got for Easts but were still threating in attack especially when Geeps Pretorius got his hands on the ball. This weekend though the inclusion of 4 contracted players will see Easts run out a very impressive and intimating forward pack. Easts will also see Joel Brown for the first time after he just finished playing for the Australian Barbarians U20’s side. The battle of the number 8 will be something to watch as both JP Fenukitau and Rocky Ilolahia loving to run the ball and enjoy the contact.

MATCH PREVIEW Like the Wests v Vikings games, this will be another tough match up. While Queanbeyan came away with a win in Round 1, Royals have made a number of changes which will strengthen their side. This will be a very physically battle and not much between the two sides.
What a match up we have between these two sides. Both sides have a number of key players and are coming off impressing wins on the weekend. Expect the ball to be thrown around a lot and the rugby to be hard and fast. Both side have quality forward packs and slick backlines which is why this match is the colts match of the round.

MATCH PREVIEW Last year’s 3rd grade finalist Queanbeyan and Royals kick start their season in the 3rd grade match of the round. Royals put in a disappointing grand final display but will be out to make amends. Queanbeyan at home are always tough to beat and with a handful of players returning form 2014 they will be very hard to beat.
Queanbeyan kick start their title defence at home against Royals in what is shaping up to be a very tight contest. Queanbeyan have almost named an all ‘Darmody’ backline so expect to be a lot of cohesion in the backline. Royals though will have the experience of Jim Taylor behind them and also a number of players who have been around the 4th grade scene for a while.

MATCH PREVIEW Wests will be confident coming off an impressive bonus point victory against Royals. However this week’s task ahead will be very tough as they take on the defending premiers. Tuggeranong will be out to kick start their 2015 campaign off with a win. This will be the match of the round for 2nd Grade
Tuggeranong colts had a tough trial last weekend against Uni-Norths in preparation for their first competition game. Vikings will be boosted by the return of a number of player who played for the Australia Barbarians in the U20’s championships. Wests on the other hand will be looking to turn around a disappointing 1st round loss to Royals.

MATCH PREVIEW Wests missed out on the final in 2014, however like Tuggeranong will be after competition points early in the season. Vikings only lost 2 games all season before comfortably winning the 3rd grade final. A large number of those players are backing up for 2015 meaning Tuggeranong will be hard to beat.
Wests first game of the season doesn’t get any tougher than last year’s Minor Premiers and grand final runners up Tuggeranong. The Lions will need to get points early if they pose a threat to Tuggeranong. Vikings will be disappointed they weren’t able to add to their Minor Premiership and will be out to make an early statement they are competition heavy weights.

MATCH PREVIEW The Eagles went down to Queanbeyan 22-10 narrowly missing an opportunity to secure a bonus point for losing by less than 7. This weekend they have a good opportunity to get there first competition points of the season. Easts on the other hand started well in the first half, but were not able to keep up with a dominate Uni side. Look for Reza Almasri to lead from the front for Easts.
Gungahlin 3rd grade after making the grand final in 2013, managed to make the preliminary final in 2014 so they are not a team to be taken lightly. Easts on the other hand not having a 4th grade for 2015 will have a reasonably strong 3rd grade outfit and will be out to cause some upsets. This game could either be a blow out for one side or a very tough and close encounter.
Easts Farewell Club legend – Frank McTaggart It is with great sadness that Easts Rugby Club legend Frank McTaggart passed away last Friday morning 20 March. Frank had been unwell for quite some time however he battled on in his unassuming manner until the very end. Frankie was the consummate Easts Rugby Club man. Though originally an uncompromising flanker for the Norths Rugby Club back in the day, Frank’s love and devotion to Easts stretched across many decades.
Frank’s voluntary efforts over many years at Easts is the stuff of legends and it is heartbreaking to know that he’ll no longer be there to help organise Easts players, volunteers, or supporters. Those at Easts no matter what era they played, volunteered or supported knew Frankie. Frankie was an Easts institution and his spirit lives on in the players, volunteers & supporters, now, and into the future. Last Saturday in honour of Frankie, Easts 1st Grade side wore black armbands while Easts President Greg Dennis spoke on behalf of Easts Rugby Club about Frankie and his association with both Easts and Uni-Norths before a minutes silence was held. Our sincere condolences to Shiela, Doug, and the whole McTaggart family.
