John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 4 Saturday, 18 April

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Easts(6) v Uni-Norths(4) @ GIO Canberra Stadium First Grade: 5.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.50pm, Colts 12.25pm Previous Result: Uni-Norths 20 defeated Easts 5 – Rd 1, 2015 After a breakthrough win in round 2, Easts were unable to back up that performance against Tuggeranong going down 66-21. Despite the score line, Easts did hold their own up until half time, however a number of quick tries by Vikings soon after put the game beyond reach. This weekend Easts have a chance to redeem themselves against Uni-Norths after the round 1 loss. Not only that they will be playing for the Owen Brown Memorial Cup which they are yet to secure after losing the inaugural fixture in 2014. Uni-Norths after having three weeks off came out firing against Royals jumping out to an early 13-3 lead only to be reeled in in the dying moments. A penalty going against them resulting in a Royals penalty goal in the final minute broke the 19 all dead lock giving Royals their first win. While disappointing to lose on the bell, the Owls can take a lot of positives out of the match and will be looking forward to defending the Owen Brown Cup and continue being placed in the top 4. Uni-Norths have named an unchanged team to that of round 3 giving the club some continuity and more chance for combinations to develop.

Royals (5) v Tuggeranong (1) @ Phillip Oval First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Tuggeranong 29 defeated Royals 8 – Rd 9, 2014 Royals finally have a win next to their name after coming from behind to win in dramatic fashion, thanks to a clutch Craig McMahon penalty goal after the siren from 30 meters out. Like the match of the round, Royals will be playing for the Wal Scollen Cup and playing in front of a big crowd and having ladies and family day will certainly fire the boys up. Royals will be boosted by the inclusion of Jay Cash, Brumbies player Silvia Siliva and Jamie Bodman returning from Injury. A reshuffled centre combination see’s Tim Cornforth move to 12 and Luke McCreath slot into outside centre, whereas Brendan Woodward returns to open side with Tom Cusack returning to the Australian 7’s program. Tuggeranong again showered their dominance over Easts running away with the game in the second half to secure consecutive bonus point victories. Doubles to Andrew Robinson and Jerome Nuimata indicates Vikings backline will be very hard to contain and something that Royals will have to focus on. Michael Henry returns to the starting side for Vikings after missing last weekend. His inclusion is the only chance to the side that started in round 3. These clashes between the two clubs are always hard fought and both teams will have to work for the full 80 if they are to get the result. Expect both forward packs to not hold back and be very physical in attack and defence.

Queanbeyan (2) v Wests (3) @ Griffith Oval First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm Previous Result: Queanbeyan 47 defeated Wests 27 Queanbeyan’s goal of going one better than there 2014 result is on track having got the maximum number of points thus far from there 2 matches they have played. Fresh from the bye the Whites will look to continue from where they left off and what better challenge then taking on Wests who are finding some form after securing 2 wins from 3 matches. At home again, Queanbeyan are yet to disappoint their supporters and will go into this game with only making one change to the previous round 2 side which is Meilani Tiatia coming onto the wing. Wests were able to secure another victory and this time with a bonus point thanks to three tries from there back line, one from Sean Doyle and Joe Smellie scoring 16 points off the boot. Taking on Queanbeyan at Queanbeyan will be a good indication of where Wests are at and without a doubt The Lions will be out to upset last year’s grand finalist. This week Brodie Leber will take the role of inside centre with regular starter Andrew Parson unavailable. In a boost though, Peter Raines returns, meaning Drew Southwell can return to Fullback. Like the rest of the games this round, this match up will also be very close and could come down to the wire.

MATCH PREVIEW Easts were at the other of the score board last weekend going down heavily to Tuggeranong. This weekend they take on Uni-Norths for the second time this season. The last time these two met, Uni won comfortably 40-5. The Owls on the weekend fell just short to Royals 17-10. Despite the loss, a try to club stalwart Joe Ritchie and a crucial bonus point provided some positives from the match for the Owls.

Easts 3rds went down for consecutives weeks, this time against defending premiers Tuggeranong. This will be the first time Easts and Uni-Norths meet in 3rd grade and going on past result from 2014, this will be quiet the interesting and close fought game. The Owls got their season underway with a 10 all draw with Royals after leading Royals early in the game thanks to a promising start in the first half.

MATCH FACT The Allan ‘Wal’ Scollen Memorial Cup will be presented to the winning team of the Premier Division 1st grade match between Tuggeranong and Royals. Allan was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident on 14 February 2002, leaving behind a pregnant wife, Rebecca, and 10 month old son, Darcy. Allan represented Royals, the ACT, South Australia and the Northern Territory in rugby as a fullback. While he played for Royals, he had many friends in both Royals and Tuggeranong Clubs. His friends and the two Clubs have established the Memorial Cup as an ongoing testament to Allan and his spirited approach to rugby, both on and off the field. He exemplified all the positive aspects of rugby through his competitive approach to the game, and his ability to make good friends from many rugby clubs throughout Australia. This initiative is intended to take something positive from Allan’s untimely death in recognising his affinity with the real values of rugby. Tuggeranong currently hold the shield after beating Royals last year 26-10. Royals will also be holding their annual Ladies & Family Day from 2pm.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals finally kick started their season with a hard fought 17-10 win over the Owls. Now with a win under their belt, Royals will look to take on a dominate Vikings side who are undefeated at the moment and scored 78 points against Easts in Round 3. Some key matchups in this game will be the battle of the half backs & outside centres with Otto Wrakonei returning from injury to battle against season veteran & 1st Grade premiership winner Lix Lealiifano.

Both Royals and Tuggeranong have been the form teams of the competition thus far. Royals have had the perfect start and while Tuggeranong with their one game managed to post 100 points. This match up will be a great test for both teams and will be the colts match of the round. Each side has a number of players who played for ACT 20’s and Australia Barbarians which indicated this will be a quality game of rugby.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals 3rd grade played in an exciting 10 all draw with Uni-Norths last weekend. Royals came from behind to score two tries, but unfortunately were unable to kick a conversion which would have separated the sides. Tuggeranong bounced back from there round 1 loss to Wests with a comprehensive 53-14 win over Easts. This matchup is a replay of the 2014 Grand Final in which Vikings comfortably got the better of Royals. Expect this game to be a hard fought encounter.

Royals were very fortunate to come away with the competition points last weekend winning 8-6 over the Owls. Playing with 14 man for most of the 2nd half, the game came down to a penalty kick after the siren in which Uni-Norths missed. Vikings have had two weekends off and will be out kick start their season again after winning their round 1 clash with Wests 3514. Both teams sit 1 & 2 on the ladder thus far.

MATCH PREVIEW Queanbeyan have a perfect record at present with 2 wins and a bye, while Wests are 2 & 1 after a close loss to Vikings in round 2 and comfortable wins in round 1 & 3. The game will be the match of round in 2nd grade. Queanbeyan currently sit atop of the table with Wests in 3rd. Both teams feature in last years final series and are continuing on from that form early this season.

Queanbeyan have only played the two matches and sit 3rd on the ladder thanks to a bye in round 3. Wests haven’t had the ideal start to their season going down 36-0 to Gungahlin in round 3 giving them three losses in row. Despite results not going their way don’t be surprised if Wests really test Queanbeyan this weekend. At win to Queanbeyan will see them keep in touch with the top two side while increasing the gap between the bottom teams.

MATCH PREVIEW Queanbeyan currently have 1 win from 1 attempt followed by a bye, so this weekend taking on and undefeated Wests outfit will be very challenging. Wests currently have +76 in there for and against column and now how to score tries, so Queanbeyan’s defence must be on song. Wests made easy work of Gungahlin and scoring over 50 points for the second week in a row

Queanbeyan get their 4th grade season underway after unfortunately forfeiting in round 1 and having the bye. Wests got their first win of the season beating Gungahlin 53-14 thanks to 9 tries being scored by their backline. A win to Queanbeyan will see them enter the top 4, while a win to Wests will have them in contention for leading the competition after 3 rounds.

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION: The opening round of the Monaro 1st Division Competition saw some clubs open up their season with some big wins. In 1st Grade, Cooma, Goulburn and Hall all scored over 40 points and were comfortable winners. Where as in 2nd grade, the matches were a lot close, and to everyone’s surprise Yass upsetting last year’s premiers Hall 35-17. Round 2, all grades and games will take place and the clash between Hall and Goulburn will be match of the round in both Grades. This match will be at Hall and will most definitely be very physical and exciting to watch. The other fixture this week will see Cooma look to continue their promising start taking on Yass and the local derby between ADFA & RMC to see who gets early bragging rights. SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION The excitement of the new competition did not disappoint with all 4 games across the two zones providing a great insight to what the competition has to offer for 2015. Monaro’s 2014 Premier Taralga were upset by Bungendore in the match of the round with the Mudchooks winning comfortably. While Boorowa came within 3 points of upsetting Crookwell and securing their first win in over the year. In the South Coast Zone, Braidwood welcomed themselves back into the competition with an impressive win over Bay Red, Broulee didn’t get the start they were after being handed a 30-5 defeat by Milton. Match of the round this week is Braidwood v Milton in the South Coast Zone, whereas in Monaro it is the Grand Final Replay between Taralga and Crookwell. Jindabyne and Batemans Bay kick start their season off after having the bye against Bay Red and Jindabyne.
