John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 5 Thursday 23 April

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Tuggeranong (1) v Queanbeyan (2) @ Viking Park First Grade: 7:30pm, Reserve Grade: 6:10pm, Colts: 4:45pm Previous Result: Tuggeranong 25 defeated Queanbeyan 13 – 2014 Grand Final

This matchup is finally here for 2015, the replay of last year’s Grand Final. Both clubs with the split round will take on each other on three separate occasion before the finals and I can assure you all games will be hotly contested and will be games you must not miss. Both teams are coming into this match with a perfect record, however someone’s party will be spoiled at the end of the 80 minutes. Tuggeranong successfully retained the Wal Scollen Cup last weekend against Royals, comfortably winning 38-13. Even a last minute change to the side, with Joe Powell being called onto the Brumbies bench against the Rebels didn’t halt Vikings momentum as they ran in 6 tries. This result was Tuggeranong third consecutive bonus point victory, indicating that Vikings attack is red hot and will need a massive defensive effort if it is to be stopped. No Changes have been made by Coach Brad Harris to the side that took on Royals. Queanbeyan handed Wests their second loss of the season thanks to the boot of half back Mitch Douch in the 20-12 win. Despite being a man down for 10 minutes, The Whites showed an impressive defensive effort to hold off The Lions in a gutsy win. Starting the season with 3 wins in a row, had put Queanbeyan in a favourable position early in the season, but with still 12 rounds to go, there is still a lot of competition points on offer. Like Tuggeranong, Queanbeyan have also named an unchanged team. Gungahlin (5) v Uni-Norths (3) @ Gungahlin Enclosed Oval First Grade: 7.20pm, Reserve Grade: 5.55pm, Colts 4.30pm Previous Result: Gungahlin 26 defeated Uni-Norths 10 – Rd 8, 2014

The battle of the birds takes place this Thursday night with the Eagles searching for their first win under Coach Dan Atkins. Gungahlin have been unlucky thus far with their results, however they have managed to secure valuable bonus points. Fresh from the week off, an unchanged side from there game against Wests has been named, meaning the Eagles will be able to continue working on combinations, none more important than that of Mitch Ward and Dan Mannix.

Uni-Norths have continued a promising start securing their second win of the season and second against Easts. Playing at the stadium was a big thrill for the club, as they went out to retain the Owen Brown Memorial Cup. After a heart breaking loss to Royals, the Owls were able to bounce back winning 27-10 with an important bonus point in horrible conditions. This week two changes have been made to the side with Tylor Bunting and Phil Ferreira get there first run on debut for the club in 1st grade this year. Both these player have played a large number of first grade games and will look to secure a regular spot. These two clubs met in the pre-season with Uni-Norths getting the better of the Eagles that day, but now that both teams are fully into competition mode and eyeing off early competition points, it will be a different ball game.

MATCH PREVIEW Gungahlin are still yet to secure their first win of the season after drawing with Easts in round 2 and losing comfortably in round 3 to Wests. Despite the results, The Eagles aren’t far off the pace. They take on a confident Uni-Norths side, who are coming off the back of a bonus point win against Easts which has them sitting 2nd on the table. Both teams will be relying on their forward packs to late the platform for their backlines. The battle of the backrowers will be entertaining to watch.

The Eagles colts will be fresh from there bye and will be out to continue their winning ways after they secured their first win of the season in round 3. In that game winger Kunal Juna scored a hat-trick. Uni-Norths on the other hand have had a very stop start beginning to their season, having only played the one game due to byes and the layout of the draw. With all boys on deck after University holidays for the Owls, they will be out to kick start their season.

MATCH PREVIEW In a replay of last year’s 2nd Grade Grand Final, this match will of course be the match of the round. Queanbeyan have had the perfect start to the season, whereas Vikings were upset by Royals in round 3, 2119. Last weekend the Whites were led by a brace of tries to JR Morgan in their 34-13 win over Wests, while ill-discipline played a role in Tuggeranong loss with 2 players receiving yellow cards. Playing at night changes the concept of the game and can alternate a team’s game plan but either way expect this game to come down to the wire.

Tuggeranong will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss to competition front runner Royals 8-7. The match was heavily dominated by defence, but unfortunately a penalty kick by Royals in the 2nd Half proved to be the difference. Vikings sit 3rd on the ladder and taking on 2nd placed Queanbeyan in the colt’s match of the round. Queanbeyan were far too good for Wests last weekend running away with the game in the final 15 minutes to blow the score line out. Riley Ahern for Queanbeyan scored 4 tries while flanker Lewis Bozzato scored a hat-trick.

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:

SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION

First Division have the week off this weekend due to ANZAC Day being this Saturday. Knowing they had the weekend off, clubs certainly left nothing in the tank in their round 2 clashes.

The battle of the two zones continued into round 2 with some unexpected results occurring, none more so than the Grand Final replay between Taralga and Crookwell in Taralga. In honour of the ANZAC weekend, both club has special strips designed for the clash (Taralga’s strip below). Once all the commemorative arrangements finished, the two teams went head to head with the Crookwell Dogs going home with the points winning 20-14.

The match of the round game against Hall and Goulburn certainly lived up to it hype, as the defending champions showed their class, hanging on by 3 points to win 13-10. Goulburn’s Dom Falk proved to be the hero kicking the vital penalties which was the difference. In the 2nd Grade Grand Final things didn’t go quiet to plan for Hall, who were beaten comfortably 36-7. The 6 tires to 1 demolition was led by fullback Brandon Courts who scored a double. In the local derby, RMC thrashed ADFA in both grades to claim early bragging rights. The win was RMC’s first of the year, while ADFA remain winless. In first grade, RMC ran riot winning 51-5, with 2nd grade following suit running in 6 tries to win 40-7. In the final games of Round 2 between Cooma and Yass at Cooma, both clubs shared the competition points as the Red Devils secured back to back wins in 1st grade, and the Rams also starting their season with 2 wins on the trot. In first grade, Yass were unable to contain Cooma’s Aaron Stewart and Jakob Stewart, with the pair scoring 5 tires between them. In 2nd grade, the roles were reversed as Cooma could put a stop to the Rams 6 try rampage. Second Grade:

Jindabyne kick started there season with a bang, making easy work of Boorowa winning 54-7. Jindabyne, Monaro & Brumbies Provincial player Dave Akkersdyke impressed with a hat-trick, while Brumbies 7’s rep Matt Caldwell made an easy transition back to 15 a side, scoring a double. The South Coast match of the round saw Milton continue their perfect start, with a bonus point win over round 1 winners Braidwood thanks to a hattrick from Mitch Rixon in the 24-0 victory. In the clash of the Bay, Batemans Bay didn’t hold back, racking up a cricket score winning 92-21 over Bay Red. Cory Maddison for Batemans Bay had a personal tally of 35 points for the game, which unbelievably came from tries only. TEAM Milton* Crookwell*
