Grand Finals The 2013 ACTJRU Grand Finals were held on Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September. All Division 1 and 2 Finals were held at Canberra Stadium, with Division 3 Finals held at ANU North Oval. More than half of all the ACTJRU clubs and schools were represented in the grand Finals across the weekend and the standard of play was excellent.

UNDER 18’s DIVISION ONE GRAND FINAL In the Premier match of the 2013 Junior season, the Under 18 Division One Grand Final was contested between St Edmund’s College 1st XV and Marist College 1st XV. With St Edmund’s 1st XV containing two Australia “A” Schoolboys in their side, and having beaten Marist both times in roundrobin play they entered the game as favourites. However it was Marist with all the early running. The Marist side put together a number of phases early in the game, however they could not turn the pressure into points with St Edmund’s defence holding. After a period of sustained pressure from Marist a St Edmund’s player intercepted a pass to score the opening try against the run of play.
Almost 6,000 spectators were counted through the gates, showing there is great support for our junior rugby players, and all spectators and participants were treated to some excellent running rugby. Marist on the attack The intercept seemed to deflate Marist for the next 10 minutes with St Edmund’s building pressure of their own. A number of breaks were made from both sides but each teams scrambling defence was equal to the task. For the rest of the half the teams traded a couple of penalty goals and tries to leave the game still in the balance going into halftime. In the second half St Edmund’s proved too strong scoring a number of tries in quick succession to get out to a comfortable 20 point lead. With 20 minutes to go Marist launched a brave fight-back scoring a couple of late tries to narrow the gap but in the end a score-line of 40-27 (in St Edmund’s favour) illustrated the endeavour that both sides took into the game and St Edmund’s were deserved winners.

Australian Rugby Union National U16 Championships During the first week of the October School Holidays the Brumbies U16 Representative side participated at the Australian Rugby Union’s U16 National Championships. The Brumbies U16’s participate in the 1st Division and were drawn in Pool B along with QLD Red, Victoria and Sydney Juniors. The teams making up Pool A were QLD White, NSW Country, Western Australia and NSW Schools. BRUMBIES MATCH REPORTS Monday 30th September-Brumbies v Sydney The Brumbies boys first match of the national Championship was against the Sydney Juniors side. In a tough game the Brumbies boys fought well. Sydney jumped out to a good lead, but the Brumbies scored 2 tries in quick succession to get right back in the game. Some late tries by Sydney gave them a flattering 37-15 win in the end.
36-8, but the game was much closer than the score suggested. QLD dominated the lineout, but the Brumbies scrum showed good improvement from the previous game and had QLD going backward on a number of occasions. Friday 4th October-Brumbies v NSW Country In the Final game of the tournament the Brumbies U16’s faced NSW Country in the 7th/8th playoff. NSW Country came out with more intent and pulled away to a comfortable lead, but 2 late tries by the Brumbies got our lads within 1 try. With 1 minute left on the clock the Brumbies needed to go the length of the field to find a match winner but stout NSW Country defence held us out. The 20-15 loss was a disappointing way to finish the championships, but the players will have grown remarkably for the experience of attending their first National Champs. NATIONAL INDIGENOUS U16’s
Along with the Brumbies U16 teams participation at nationals we also had players from Brumbies territory selected to represent the National Indigenous U16 Representative team. The National Indigenous U16’s play in Division 2 at the National Champs against state sides from South Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania. Unfortunately, Brumbies U16’s v Victoria injury took away some players, so in the end Jesse Thomson was the only Brumbies region player in Tuesday 1st October-Brumbies v Victoria the side. The Brumbies boys put in their best performance of the tournament against a strong QLD team who would go on to comfortably win the championship. The Brumbies really took it to QLD in the first half, and it wasn’t until QLD rolled out their 3 big guns in the second half that they started to pull Wagga’s Jesse Thomson (#17) lifts his jumper away to safety. Eventually QLD won the match

Brumbies Schoolgirls XV’s Rep team Eventually the weight of possession took it’s toll and the Brumbies girls started to make strong gains up the field resulting in a number of tries. With just 20 minutes to go the Brumbies girls had a comfortable lead of 25-0. The last 20 minutes saw a strong fight-back by Sydney and eventually they scored near fulltime to rapturous applause, not only from Sydney supporters, but also from the sporting Brumbies fans. The final result of 257 was a fair reflection of the game, and an outstanding result for our girls. Taylor Stanford was 4 the star scoring 15 of the 25 points.
Brumbies Schoolgirls 7s enjoying the Gold Coast Again our side faced Victoria and put in an even better performance this time beating the Southerners by 29-17 to earn a place in the Plate Final against South Australia. SA had been the surprise package of the competition so far and our girls couldn’t contain them in a 22-5 loss. 6th place out of 9 teams was a solid performance from the girls.

ACT run out to face South Australia ACT v South Australia ACT opened the tournament with their first match against the South Australians. In picturesque settings the ACT boys started strongly making breaks at will. The team enjoyed long periods of possession and territory and 3 excellent tries were scored by halftime. Unfortunately after just a couple of Larkham Shield won by ACT minutes of 2nd half play a South Australian 5 player for the first time ever as was injured. ACT v New South Wales The last game for our ACT boys was against the traditional powerhouse of this event NSW. Not only would this match decide the tournament winner, but the match also doubles as the Trevor Allen shield fixture (a shield for the winner of the ACT v NSW match). ACT have never beaten NSW in this fixture, but all results leading into the match suggested this could be ACT’s best chance in many years. NSW came out of the blocks flying, scoring a number of long range tries early to get out to a 19-0 lead. However ACT fought back through a strong set piece with Wes Alexander making a powerful break to score and give ACT some hope at 19-7. Unfortunately this was short-lived as NSW then turned on the after burners to run away with the match. Result: ACT 7-55 NSW (Alexander try, Poszantis con)

Profiles - ACT Community Rugby PLAYER PROFILE - SUITA TAI CLUB PROFILE - YASS RAMS RUC The Yass Rugby Club, North of Canberra, are traditionally a strong performer at all levels of the game. The Senior club supports 2 sides and the big news for Yass rugby club this year was the performance of the Senior 1st Grade side who went on to win the Division One 1st Grade championship. The achievement was particularly special given the

Dave Martin PROFILE Dave has been a great coach and administrator in the Southern Inland region of Brumbies territory. This year Dave took charge of the Southern Inland U15 Representative team as well as coaching the Griffith Blacks U15 side to the SIRU U15 Premiership. Dave also won the 2013 volunteer of the year award.

FUN FACTS • In 1924 Western Samoa played their first international match against Fiji. The match was played at 7am so the Samoans could go to work. The match took place on a field which happened to have a tree growing on the pitch! • Rugby union players who swapped codes to play professional Rugby league were banned from returning to the Amateur rugby union code up until August 26th , 1995 when rugby union officially became “open”, ie professional.
BUDDING BRUMBIES INTRODUCTION
REGISTRATIONS
In November of this year the Brumbies in partnership with our local Premier Junior clubs in the ACT & Queanbeyan will be running a new rugby introductory program called “Budding Brumbies”. The program will run on 4 consecutive Friday afternoon’s starting on Friday 1st November and concluding on Friday 22nd November. The program is a great opportunity for children aged 4 to 9 years old to give rugby a go in a safe and enjoyable environment.

• In 1877 rugby moved from having 20 players in a team to the current 15 aside team. • The trophy for winning the 6 Nations use to be silver on the inside, but due to champagne corrosion it is now lined with gold • The name Alexander Obolensky may not be familiar to many rugby followers in Australia, However Obolensky’s story is one of intrigue. Obolensky was a Russian prince who as a child was forced to flee the 1917 Russian Revolution. Having settled in England he became a star for the England Rugby team scoring twice against the All Blacks in England’s first win over NZ in 1936. He would later perish during WW2 during a training accident at just 24 years.

WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN Participants will be run through a number of rugby relevant skills and modified games. The program will also encourage fun, physical activity, and teamwork. Sessions will be run by trained coaching staff in a safe environment. Parents are most welcome to watch and/or assist and most clubs will be running a BBQ during the sessions.

BEGA HIGH SCHOOLS REGULAR RUGBY
SPACE EXPO - GOULBURN
Sapphire Coast Anglican College again hosted regular rugby matches for the Bega region. With the inclusion of the Lumen Christie (Pambula) School taking the regular competition to three schools, the regular competition is slowly growing.
The space expo was a great success with Brumbies Rugby, running a section of the 2 day expo. The expo creates great exposure to all sports and extra curricular activities. The Expo is held in Goulburn with all the Schools in the area coming to attend the two day event. The event is a great way to expose Rugby to a lot schools in a short amount of time. A big thanks to Seth Stoltenberg for helping out on the two days.
• Development Officer visits have continued to Schools in the South Coast and Monaro regions with approximately 2,500 children across SCM involved in rugby skills clinics and recruitment visits. • School Gala Days will continue in term 4 with Yass, Narooma and Milton all due to host Primary School Rugby Gala Days. • Approximately 1,500 Schoolchildren in SCM have participated in Schools Rugby Carnival Days so far this year.
Braidwood v Goulburn in the U10’s FIZZY REDS FINALS Action in the SCAC v Bega High School match This term also had a Girls competition; this gave the girls their first opportunity to play their first games of Rugby. The two days were a great success with seven teams competing in both days of competition.
• A number of SCM based girls represented the Brumbies Schoolgirls with aplomb in the Girls 15 and 7 aside Representative Programs.
The Fizzy Reds Goulburn Friday Night competition concluded with Finals on Friday 6th September at Carr Convoy. The under 12 competition was taken out by a convincing Braidwood Redbacks beating Goulburn Reds 26-0. The 2013 Fizzy Reds season was one of great success with good numbers again participating. 2014 promises to be another great season for the Friday night concept and Brumbies Development encourages all juniors to have a go even if you play a different sport on a Saturday.

SCHOOLS NEWS • A new Carnival was held for Schoolgirls rugby 7’s at Yanco Ag High School. 4 teams participated in the Open girls division with 2 teams playing in the Year 7/8 competition. Wagga High School won both competitions. • School Visits have continued through term 3 with Brumbies Development officer Jack Burey visiting a series of schools. • A number of SIRU girls have enjoyed success representing the Brumbies Schoolgirls against NSW opposition.
Southern Inland Review The U11’s Grand Final was another nail-biter, extraordinarily this was the 2nd of 3 Grand Finals The 2013 Southern Inland junior Rugby Union which required extra-time. After the extra-time Grand Finals were held at Temora on Sunday 25th period the 2 teams still couldn’t be separated with a 26-26 draw meaning both Wagga and Young were August. Prior to Grand Finals there were preliminary Finals days held at West Wyalong and Leeton declared joint premiers. Nick Jenkin’s from Young won the Man of the Match award. on the 2 Sundays leading up to the Grand Finals. On Grand Finals Day 3 Finals were contested in the U15, U13 and U11 grades. The U9 Premiers are decided by the points table and this honour went to Griffith. SOUTHERN INLAND JUNIOR FINALS
In the U15 Grand Final it was also Griffith who won the silverware following a 27-10 win over a determined Leeton side. Man of the match for the U15’s Grand Final went to Griffith’s Matthew Driti.

The U13’s Grand Final was a thriller with Albury defeating Griffith by 31-19. The match was much closer than the final score suggests with both teams actually tied at fulltime and needing to play extratime. Albury’s fitness held together best, and a couple of extra time tries got them home. Man of the match for the U13’s was Joe Cass from Albury.
In September the Southern inland U16 Rep team conducted a tour of Tasmania. The U16’s got the opportunity to face full state opposition by playing the Tasmanian u16’s twice, prior to Tasmania’s participation in the ARU U16 Nationals. Southern inland performed very well winning both matches 34-5 and 32-12 respectively.

The coaching kids rugby course teaches coaches the best management techniques for running their junior training sessions. The attackers (BLUE) start with the ball in the middle (3) and on the coaches whistle pass directly to 1 or 5 to commence the attack. The two defenders (RED) in the middle must react into the channel from which the attack is generated and link up with the single defender before going forward as a group and drifting as required. The remaining defender must re-connect with the three inside defenders by holding his depth to buy some time and pulling them across. Once a try is scored or attack is shut down the players will run through to the opposite end and the drill is repeated for 4-6 efforts.

Defenders take the space forward on the inside shoulder maintaining their shape. Steady once a target area is chosen. Stay tall & dip late through the knees & hips. Shoulder contact - Hit, Stick & Squeeze. Finish with leg drive. Look to recapture possession.

Have only 1 of the middle defenders move into the channel where the Ball Carrier is. Have all Defenders move into the channel of the Ball Carrier.

Around the Region ACTJRU REPRESENTATIVE RESULTS
KPMG 2013 CANBERRA JUNIOR 7’s
On Sunday 15th September Brumbies Junior Representative teams faced off against opposition from New South Wales at Marist College. A good sized crowd fronted to watch a great day of closely fought matches. The ACTJRU U17 side played NSW U17 and grabbed an exciting one point win 27-26. The U17’s have a strong group of players who unfortunately had a shortened program this year, but will be happy to have beaten NSW in such a thrilling encounter. The ACTJRU U16 side faced Sydney Juniors who were also in their pool at the U16 Nationals and narrowly went down in an encouraging performance. Lastly the ACTJRU U15 side faced off against the NSW U15 state side and were also narrowly beaten. Like the U17’s this was also the final match of the U15’s representative program for 2013.
The 2013 KPMG Canberra Junior Sevens was held on Sunday 15th September at O’Connor ovals. 1100 players took part in the day with O’Connor ovals chock full of spectators. A very successful carnival was held with clubs from across Brumbies territory participating along with a number of strong Sydney Junior clubs. The ACT clubs performed well, but ultimately it was the Sydney clubs winning the major awards on the day. Results were as follows;

In the week leading up to the Brumbies historic Super Rugby Grand Final v The Chiefs, Brumbies Development encouraged our schools to participate in some rugby activities to help support the team. A number of schools across the Brumbies territory signed up to participate, and each school received an impressive pack of giveaways.

Ultimately over 1,000 children participated with some notable efforts. Burgmann College played touch rugby union, which then culminated with a Brumby Jack colouring in competition which was judged by Brumbies Development staff. Burgmann participants also dressed up in Brumbies gear. Marist College also had a large contingent of the Junior School involved with games and dress up. Thanks to all the schools that showed their support for the Brumbies across the ACT & Southern NSW. FLORIADE Brumbies Development also attended Floriade on the weekend of October 12th and 13th where we had our new Brumbies Passing cage set up. Giveaways were handed out to aspiring rugby players.
