John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 3 Saturday, 11 April

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Gungahlin (6) v Wests (4) @ Gungahlin Enclosed First Grade: 3.15pm, Reserve Grade: 1.50pm, Colts 12.25pm Previous Result: Gungahlin 24 defeated Wests 7 – Rd 11, 2014 The Eagles suffered a heart breaking last minute loss to Easts to leave them winless after 2 rounds. While frustrating, the Eagles did secure 2 bonus points which could prove very handy later in the year. A penalty goal to Luke Duffey put the Eagles in the in lead in the dying moments, but an error off the kick lead to Easts recovering the ball before scoring a close range try. This weekend, Gungahlin have only made the one change with Ryan Goodall shifting from the wing to outside center for James Dargaville which brings Eremasi Kelei onto the wing, Wests left there run a little too late, scoring a try in the last play of the game to put them within one point of Tuggeranong to make the score 32-31 in round 2. Like Gungahlin, Wests also secured 2 vital bonus points which as they know firsthand make a huge difference. With Peter Raines out, Drew Soutwell will again shift from the wing into half back. The Lions will be boosted by the return Andrew Parsons & Junior Luteru in the centers, seeing Ratu Tagive shift to fullback. Mitch Tye gets an opportunity in 1st grade for the first time in 2015 and will be out to cement a spot in an already impressive back row. Expect a good battle in the back row, while in the backs watch matchup between Dan Mannix & Joe Smellie.

Royals (7) v Uni-Norths (3) @ Phillip Oval First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Uni-Norths 17 defeated Royals 6 – Rd 11, 2014 Royals start to 2015 has them winless after 2 rounds, however both matches were close and Royals were not far off. Against Queanbeyan some costly errors gave the Whites some easy tries which proved to be the difference. However Royals managed to secure a bonus point thanks to a penalty kick after the siren. This weekend we will not only see Royals return home, it will also be the return of Tom Cusack who hasn’t played from Royals since injuring himself in the 2013 Minor Semi Final. The inclusion of him will boost and already impressive back row. Harry Burey will also make his debut in 1st grade at inside centre shift Tim Cornforth to outside centre. Uni-Norths have had the last two weekends off after grinding out a 20-5 victory over Easts at RMC. Tries to brother’s Nick and Alex Jones were the difference as the Owls held Easts scoreless in the 2 nd half. This weekend will be a great test for the Owls who will look to secure back to back victories putting them in a good spot early in the season. The Owls have made two changes to the side from round one with Phil Ferreira coming onto the wing with Gareth Watts shifting to fullback, while Richie Taumoepeau returns after missing round 1. This game could quiet easily be an either tight tussle like their last encounter or be very high scoring.

Easts (5) v Tuggeranong (2) @ Griffith Oval First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm Previous Result: Tuggeranong 92 defeated Easts 0 – Rd 18, 2014 Easties secured a come from behind win against Gungahlin thanks to a last minute try by half back Simon Webber. Easts were boosted by 4 of their 5 allocated Brumbies, however as a team they will have confidence coming into this tough encounter against Tuggeranong. This weekend Easts have an unfamiliar backline with a new centre paring while the remaining positions in the backs are the same. The forwards see 5 changes from round 2, but those players coming in will be excited and keen to continue on from the efforts from the game against the Eagles. Vikings managed to hold off a fast finishing Wests outfit to start there season off with a bonus point victory. Early points were the difference in the end thanks to their four tries from backs Joe Powell, Jerome Nuimata, Nigel Ah Wong & Ernest Suavai. This weekend Tuggeranong have made one change in the backline as Isaac Thompson returns at fullback which sees a shuffle in the centres and wing positions. In the forwards, Liam McGrath gets his first run on debut at Tuggeranong, while Connal McInerney returns to Tuggeranong after a long rep season which saw him get selected in the Australia U20’s squad. The only other change was John Field coming in for Josh Hitchens. Although the last time these two met, Tuggeranong ran riot, this game will be a lot closer and Easts will come out early looking to get the upper hand on Vikings.

MATCH PREVIEW The Eagles were unable to capitalise on the home ground advantage drawing with Easts. At home again, Gungahlin will be out to knock over Wests who they defeated last year in the Minor Semi Final 14-9. Like Gungahlin, Wests were unable to get that final try to defeat Tuggeranong. After the week off, both teams will be fresh and ready to get their seasons back on track.

Gungahlin’s colts haven’t played since their round 1 loss to Queanbeyan. With such a long break, the team should be prepared for whatever Wests will through at them. Expect this match to be a tight hit out as both are winless & the Lions out to rectify a poor performance in round 2 against Vikings. Wests will be boosted by the inclusion of Brodie Leber who returns from competing in the national u20’s championships for the Australia Barbarians.

MATCH PREVIEW Gungahlin 3rds started off their season with a bonus point victory over Easts. The 6 tries to 2 win is encouraging for the Eagles who had a tough day at the office losing 1st Grade & drawing 2nd Grade on that day. Wests also got their season off with a bang handing the defending premiers a 34 point defeat. With both teams showing attacking flair, this game should be exciting to watch.

Gungahlin’s 4th grade get their season underway this weekend and what a place to do it then at home. This is the first time the Eagles will be play at Gungahlin Enclosed this year. Wests 4th grade went down comfortably to Vikings 35-14 at Radford. Early competition points are a must, so both teams will be chancing their arm this weekend in hope of getting the upper hand.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals 2nds haven’t had the most encouraging start losing both games, however this weekend is a good time turn their season around. Uni-Norths started their season with an impressive 40-5 victory over Easts before a two week break. The win was a great reward for Uni who didn’t win a game in 2nd grade in 2014.

The Royals v Uni-Norths matchup is a replay of last year’s minor semi-final where Uni got the better of Royals. Both teams shared the points in their 2014 regular season games so expect this game to be tight contest. Royals have shown promising form early claiming bonus point victories, while Uni are yet to play a competition game.

MATCH PREVIEW Uni-Norths 3rds get there season underway this weekend by taking on last year’s grand finalist. The Owls in 2014 had a mixed season winning a handful of game and losing a number of game they could have easily won. Royals started their season in disappointing form against Queanbeyan going down 45-5. While not ideal, Royals have two matches to get there season back on track before a round 5 bye.

Both Royals and Uni-Norths play there first competition game for 2015 this weekend. Queanbeyan unfortunately forfeited in round 2 giving Royals a bonus point 20-0 victory while the Owls had bye. The Owls secured only one win in 2014 and with a new season ahead of them, expect a different side from then. Royals on the other hand were finalist and a renowned for having a solid 4th grade team.

MATCH PREVIEW Easts bounced back in Round 2 after a terrible loss in round 1 to draw with Gungahlin 17 all. George Cross for the Beasties led from the front scoring two tries. This weekend’s task will be tough taking on the defending Premiers Vikings. Tuggeranong were able to hold on against Wests taking the game 10-7 thanks to tries to Tom Blencowe & reserve Rhys Griffiths.

Easts 3rd grade didn’t get off to the start they hoped for, going down to the Eagles 32-12. However, playing a home will always give a team a bit more belief so expect Easts to come out firing. Vikings like Easts also have started their season off with a loss, going down comfortably to Wests 53-19. With both teams searching for their first win, expect some exciting rugby.

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION

FIRST DIVISION:

SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION

The Monaro 1st Division gets under way this weekend after a long off season. The 2015 Monaro 1st Division will again encompass 6 teams from Canberra and its surrounding regions. ADFA, RMC, Yass, Goulburn, Hall and Cooma continue to make up First Division competition. Over 15 rounds clubs will battle it out before the 3 week final series finishing on the 22nd August.

In the 2nd Division it is very exciting times for 2015 as both the Monaro 2nd Division Competition and the South Coast Competition have joined to form a Super Rugby style format spaning over 15 rounds. The 5 clubs in each zone will play home and away games against each other and a mixed round midway through the season.

Clubs have been vigorously training and getting their teams up to speed which was evident in those who participated in the Monaro Pre Season Carnival. We had all 6 1st division clubs take part in the carnival giving them one final hit out and opportunity to fine tune their game plans for round 1.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the final series will involve 8 of the 10 teams which will be divided into a cup and bowl. The top team from each zone (Zone Minor Premiers) followed by the next highest 2 on the ladder will play off for the Cup over 3 weeks of finals, while the next 4 teams (5th, 6th, 7th & 8th) on the ladder will play off in the same format for the Bowl.

Goulburn were the dominate side in 2014, winning the Club championship, 1st and 2nd Grade Minor Premiership & the 1st Grade Premiership. Hall though will be out to defend their 2nd grade Premiership after upsetting an undefeated Goulburn side 13-12 in a very entertaining Grand Final. This weekend’s match of the round will be Cooma v RMC at Cooma. These two clubs made the finals in 2014, however due to RMC’s unavailability the match did not go ahead meaning this will be a very interesting and exciting start to 2015. Goulburn take on ADFA at home while Yass play host to Hall. Going off the pre-season carnival, round 1 will be hotly contested in all games and grades.

Like Monaro 1st Division this competition will finish on the 22nd August. Round 1 will see Bungendore host Taralga and will be the Monaro zone match of the round while in the South Coast zone, that match of the round will be Milton verse Broulee in Milton. The other fixtures for the weekend will be Crookwell against Boorowa in Crookwell and Bay Red verse Braidwood who have returned to the competition after a two year absence. Jindabyne and Batemans Bay will enjoy one more week off before they kick start their campaigns in round 2.

2015 Women’s Division – Pre Season Carnival The Women’s Division kick start their Pre-season Carnivals this weekend at Phillip Oval. Royals, UniNorths & Tuggeranong will take on each other in a number of 7’s games. The following weekend, the girls will be back at Phillip for a 10’s Carnival as Royals celebrate their ladies day. The women’s 15’s competition does not begin until the 9th of May, and will conclude on the 8th August in line with the Men’s Premier Division.

Draw – Saturday 11th April, Phillip Oval 10.30am 11.00am 11.30am 12pm

Expectations of Behaviour Guidelines The Expectations of Behaviour Guidelines are a simple outline for parents, teachers, coaches and players to ensure everyone is given the opportunity to enjoy the game to the maximum level. Rugby has always been a game that prides itself on fair play and enjoyment for all, so please adhere to these guidelines to ensure this continues. For further information, please go to www.rugby.com.au/communityrugby These guidelines have been developed to: - Maintain the elements of enjoyment and satisfaction in Rugby; - Make adults aware that young people play to satisfy themselves and not necessarily to satisfy adults or members of their own peer group; - Improve the physical fitness of youth by encouraging participation in Rugby by making it attractive, safe and enjoyable for all young people; and - Constantly remind administrators, coaches, teachers, referees and parents that Rugby must be administered, taught and provided, for the good of those young people who wish to play the game. It is their game. Players -

Play for enjoyment, not just to please your parents, teacher or coach. Play by the laws of the game. Never argue with the referee’s decision. Let your captain or coach ask any necessary questions. Control your temper – no ‘mouthing off’. Work equally hard for yourself and for your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will your own. Be a good sport. Applaud all the good play, whether it is done by your team or your opponent. Shake hands with all of the opposing team at the conclusion of the match, and clap them off in the spirit of good sportsmanship. Treat all players as you yourself would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take advantage of any player. Treat everyone equally regardless of sex, disability, ethnic origin or religion. Remember that the goals of the game are - to have fun, improve your skills and feel good. Co-operate with your coach, teacher, team mates, referee and opponents, for without them you do not have a game.

Parents/Spectators - Remember that young people are involved in Rugby for their enjoyment, not yours. - Encourage your children to play by the laws. - Teach young people that honest effort is as important as victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment. - Remember that young people learn best by example. Applaud good play from both teams. - Do not publicly question the referee’s judgement and never his/her honesty. - Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from the game. - Recognise the importance of volunteer coaches, teachers and referees. They give their time and resources to provide a game for young participants. Coaches/Teachers -

Be reasonable in your demands on the young player’s time, energy and enthusiasm. Teach your players the laws of the game and for them to play within the laws. Ensure that all players get a game. The ‘just average’ players need and deserve equal time. Remember that young people play for fun and enjoyment and that winning is only a part of it. Never ridicule the players for making errors or losing a game. Be professional and accept responsibilities for your actions. Display high standards in language, behaviour, manner, dress, punctuality and preparation. Develop team respect for the ability of opponents, as well as the judgement of referees and opposing coaches. Discourage excessive talk on the field. Insist on a disciplined approach by the players.
