ARU Level 2 Coaching Course 7th - 9th March, 2015

Emerging Talent Camps In the October School holidays Brumbies Rugby launched our new Emerging Talent Week from the 29th September to the 3rd October. The week consisted of 2 camps, firstly the U15/U16/U17 group attended a 3 day camp from the Monday to Wednesday, and then the U13/U14 players attended on the Thursday and Friday of the same week. Each camp contained 70 players, so 140 junior players attending across the week.

ers able to access the Brumbies teams training field and recovery centre as well as sleeping and eating all at the same site. This also enabled the junior players to investigate the gym and Brumbies training centre, and to meet professional playing and coaching staff through the course of the week.

Overall the camp proved hugely successful and we will look to continue the Emerging camps in October of each year, particularly with the linkage to the Junior Gold Cup trials traditionally held in mid October.

ACT SCHOOLS U12 REPS

Representative Rugby ACT U12 SCHOOLS REPRESENTATIVE TEAM This years ACT Under 12 Schools Rep team made the exciting trip to Adelaide to contest the 2014 Southern States Championships. The championships is contested between the ACT, NSW, South Australia and Victoria state teams. Following a strong training and trial program the team were well prepared for the championships and the performances were testament to the hard work of the playing and management staff.

Unfortunately NSW again were far too dominant winning 52-5 to claim the title again. NSW have comfortably won every edition of this event so for ACT to again win the Stephen Larkham Shield for Runners Up was a very creditable result, and was the second year in a row of winning this shield. BRUMBIES SCHOOLGIRL’S REP TEAM This year’s Brumbies Schoolgirl’s 15 aside rep team again had 2 representative games. The first match was hosted at St Edmund’s College here in Canberra with the girls playing the Western Sydney Representative team. The Western Sydney side featured a sizeable forward pack and speedy backs and proved too strong beating us 27-15.

The ACT Schools U12 team before running out In game one at the championships the team faced off against South Australia in oppressive heat. The South Australians fronted with a very strong side, who showed great strength at the breakdown. ACT performed well and the match finished in a 12-12 draw. In the second game ACT faced a sizeable Victorian team, and the match between ACT and Victoria is always a mini final within the tournament. With captain Will Hayes scoring on the buzzer the ACT were ecstatic to steal a 15-14 win. This win meant ACT would face NSW in the last game in what was effectively a grand final for the 2nd year running .

Brumbies Schoolgirls after the NSW game The second game of the program saw our girls bus up to Sydney to face the NSW CHS Representative team. Facing the best of NSW girls is always a tough battle, and so it proved again. Our girls put in a very brave showing, but with injuries from earlier in the program, we struggled as the match went on. Eventually NSW overcame us by 25-10 but it was a very creditable performace from our girls, especially considering they had spent 4 hours on the bus before the match, as well as the player shortage through the injuries against Western Sydney girls.

U17 WINNERS In the Under 17 division all 5 teams had their moments throughout the 5 week competition, but in the end it was the Uni Norths Owls U17 girls who took the honours, the medallions, and the silverware winning the U17 Grand Final. The Tuggeranong Vikings U17 team won the Plate Final to claim their own piece of silverware.

Girls Club Sevens Competition 2014 saw the exciting introduction of a new girls regular rugby competition. This took the form of 7 aside rugby and catered for 2 age groups, the U14 girls and the U17 girls. Alongside this competition women’s games were also played with the local senior women's clubs getting involved.

girls respective schools do not participate in these gala days it as very difficult for teenage girls to get any rugby and we feel the new club 7’s competition helps to fill this void.

Action from the U17 girls competition The idea of the competition was to enable teenage girls a real opportunity to play in a structured multi week competition. Prior to starting this competition girls in the 13 to 17 year age group really had no regular rugby opportunities. Uni Norths U17’s - Champs U14 WINNERS In the girls U14 division the final was a hotly contested but it was the country girls from Jindabyne U14’s who claimed the championship. Uni Norths claimed the U14 Plate Championshsip.

ACTRRA referee officiates a well packed scrum The competition kicked off on Sunday 31st August and ran for 5 consecutive Sundays culminating in the finals on Sunday 28th September with competition winners presented with trophies and medals. With a completely new program, it is always difficult to estimate how much interest a project will get, but pleasingly we ended up with over 150 participants in the 3 divisions (women’s, U17, & U14) and 13 teams in total. The following clubs entered team(s) in the various divisions - Tuggeranong Vikings, Uni Norths Owls, Canberra Royals, Jindabyne Bushpigs, Queanbeyan Whites, Barbarians, and also teams from Caroline

Whilst girls 12 and under can play in junior teams with boys, and girls 17 and over can be signed off to play women's rugby, the only rugby opportunities for the 13-17 year old girls had previously been to participate in our one off High School 7’s and 10’s gala days during the year. Term 3 saw many clinics conducted within schools across the Southern NSW area. The highlights from term 3 were the Batemans Bay Primary School Gala day featuring 10 teams. The carnival was won by St Bernard’s who took out both Year 3/4 and year 5/6 divisions. In the High School age groups the inaugural Monaro Tri-Schools Trophy was held.
