John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 1 Saturday, 5th April 2014 The much anticipated 2014 season kicks of today with some outstanding matches taking place. This season will be contested over 14 rounds before the finals series in light of the newly introduced National Rugby Championships. Teams can’t afford to have slumps in their season this year, and early competition points will rd be vital in securing finals spots. Tuggeranong Viking completed their 3 premiership in a row defeating Royals 28-21 in a match that had everything a grad final could ask for.
Match of the Round:
Wests (4th) v Royals (Runners Up), Jamison Oval First Grade: 3:15pm, Reserve Grade: 1:50pm, Colts: 12:25pm
Our first Skins Match of the Round is between two competitions heavy weights that featured in last year’s final series. Wests and Royals recently had a very tightly contested pre season match between each other so we can expect the same today. Wests have been working hard during the pre-season on fitness and skills. Looking to take the errors out of their game from last year and be more consistent. The Lions will be looking for big involvements from the players that have been a part of the ACT XV program. Wests have a number of players returning this year, while new key players Charlie Luteru and Uelese Uelese will look to make their mark in the competition. Royals will be looking to carry forward after a solid year with all teams making the finals in 2013. The club will again have a blend of youth and experience in the senior squad and have a number of new players featuring. Last year’s runners up have had a number of trial games, while 35 players from the club have just returned from a club rugby tour to Europe. Injuries to front rowers Joel Pender and Jay Cash will be a big loss, but Coach Russell Ingram is confident Brian Kaio & Anthony Chan can fill those roles. The last time these two teams played: Round 14, 2013 (Royals 42 def Wests 21)
Gungahlin (5th) v Uni-Norths (7th), Gungahlin Enclosed Oval, Gungahlin First Grade: 3.15pm, Reserve Grade: 1.50pm, Colts: 12.25pm
This match will be played at the new Gungahlin Enclosed Oval which is a state of the art oval complex. Gungahlin will play 2 of their home games there this year in round 1 and round 12. The 2014 season for the Eagles is an important year as we look to improve from last year’s performance. Gungahlin have had a sound build up to round 1 with trials against Queanbeyan, Wests and Uni-Norths. The club also has had a number of players in the ACT XV program playing games against the Brumbies and Pacific Nations Cup and will be looking upon them to lead from the front. This season will see Uni Norths continuing its rebuilding efforts, with a strong and renewed focus at the Colts level. The offseason has brought about modest gains in recruitment and, having completed a rigorous preseason program, the foundations are now being set for a new and improved performance for the club in season 2014. New players Scot Meakins, Cuan Hablutzel, Taylor Bunting and Wily Fine will turn out for the club for the first time, while Captain Bhiamie Williamson returns after an injury plagued 2013. The last time these two teams played: Round 16, 2013 (Gungahlin 45 def Uni-Norths 5
Easts (6th) v Tuggeranong (Premiers), Griffith Oval, Griffith First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm
Easts are looking to improve on their results from 2013 having started training in November and have taken part in three trial games. All players have worked hard during the preseason in preparation for this match. Easts have been strong in recruitment, focusing on colts and will also expect key senior players Matt Giugni, Jono Naoupu, Fabian Tago and Joe Shirely to step up this year. Tuggeranong have had a number of 2013 senior players retiring and moving onto further opportunities, 2014 represents an opportunity for a large number of graduating Vikings Academy players to play a significant role in the coming season. Tuggeranong have worked extremely hard throughout the off and preseason and are excited and determined to defend their title. Vikings will have 7 players starting today that played in the grand final last year. The last time these two teams played: Round 17, 2013 (Tuggeranong 64 def Easts 21)

MATCH PREVIEW Wests will be looking to bounce back this year after a disappointing 2013 where they didn’t make the finals. Whereas Royals on the other hand will take some confidence out of making last year’s finals series. Traditional these matches are very close, so expect a grand stand finish.
Wests 4th Grade also missed out on the finals last year, after winning the competition in 2012. Wests have stuck with the same coaching staff as last year and will continue to build a strong team. Royals though, fresh from their overseas tour and finishing 3rd last year know what is required if they are to make the finals again in 2014.

MATCH PREVIEW Gungahlin 3rds had an outstanding back end to last year going always to the Grand Final, but on the day went down fighting to the undefeated Queanbeyan side. The Eagles 3rd Grade we’re the only Gungahlin side to feature in the final series. The Owls though had a disappointing 2013 season winning only 1 game, but are confident they can turn that around this year.
Gungahlin 4th grade struggled last year, but will be ready to go for today’s match as it is the first match to be played on the new oval. For the Owls this season is a great opportunity to start a fresh and push forward after last year’s poor effort. Both clubs will be relying on senior players that have been in the lower grades for a number of years now.

MATCH PREVIEW Easts 3rds will be out to cause an upset in round 1 as they take on Tuggeranong who finished 3 rd last year. Tuggeranong had there opportunities last year, bowing out in the preliminary, but will looking to go all the way this year.
Easts 4th Grade were a surprise last year making it to the minor semi final, losing to Tuggeranong in a hard fought match. While disappointed, Easts can build from that for this year. Vikings on the other hand came from 4th on the ladder to be declared joint champions with Queanbeyan and will be pushing to go back to back in 2014.
2014 John I Dent Cup Season Launch The 2014 John I Dent Cup Season Launch took place on Monday 31st March 2014 at The RUC in Barton. With well over 60 people attending the launch welcomed all and stated his excitement for the Club Rugby Season to get under way. The Brumbies contracted players will again be turning out for their respective clubs after a very impressive 2013 season. The Implementation of these players to club sides has done wonders for the competition, clubs and the community and will only improve in 2014. MC Elliot Woods spoke to all 7 Premier Clubs Representatives about the 2014 season and how clubs are looking. The common theme expressed by all was they were aiming for a finals spots, player fitness and they were very confident in all their players’ abilities. This season is looking to be very evenly contested across the whole competition with all clubs recruitment and retention being very positive. It will also be very important to get off to a good start as the competition is now being played over 14 rounds. There have been no changes made to 1st grade coaches this year, given coaches a further opportunity to take their clubs in the right direction. On behalf of Brumbies Rugby we would like to thank The RUC for hosting the Season Launch for 2014 in such fine fashion.

MONARO 1st DIVISION & WOMEN’S COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION: ROUND 1 The Monaro 1st Division gets under way this weekend after a long off season. Club have been vigorously training and getting their teams up to speed which was evident in those who participated in last weekend’s Monaro Pre Season Carnival. We had all 6 1st division clubs take part in the carnival giving them one final hit out and opportunity to fine tune their game plans for round 1. Goulburn were the dominating team easily defeating Yass and Cooma, while the surprise was RMC, who defeated hall and Yass.
WOMEN’S DIVISION – Pre Season 7’s
Round 1 match of the round will be RMC v Cooma at RMC. Both teams will take in a lot of confidence from there trial form and will be looking to get valuable points early in the 15 round competition.
The Women’s 15’s competition will begin on the 10th of May in which they will play 4 home and 4 away matches with 2 club byes. The competition is aligned with the men’s Premier Division and will finish with the Grand Final on the 9th August.
ADFA will host Goulburn who could be touted as early season favourites after finishing 1st grade runners up and 2nd Grade Champions in 2013. ADFA though have lost a number of players from lasts years’ 1st Grade minor premiership side and will be looking to rebuild.
Saturday 5th April 7’s Draw
The final game Yass and Hall at Yass will be another tough battle between these clubs. Yass are the defending champions and know that everyone will want to knock them off. Hall though who had a disappointing season will be looking to send a message to the competition with an early victory.
Goulburn in action last year against ADFA in the Major Semi Final
The girls kick start there preparation for the 2014 season with at 7’s carnival at RMC. We welcome RMC into the 7’s competition this year before they form with ADFA in the 15’s competition. All clubs will be participating in the 7’s on Saturday, before next week going to Uni-Norths for another round of 7’s and finishing their pre season carnival with 10’s at Queanbeyan on the 3rd of May.
