John I Dent Cup Preview: Preliminary Final Saturday 2nd August Preliminary Final: Saturday 2nd August Tuggeranong (1) v Gungahlin (3) – 3:25pm, Viking Park One team experienced the highs of winning, the other experienced the lows of a golden opportunity missed however this weekend both experiences can be forgotten as their 2014 season is on the line. It’s the preliminary final and now with everything to lose and with no second chances we will have a dog fight on our hands as both Tuggeranong and Gungahlin look to stay alive in their quest to lift the John I Dent Cup for 2014. Tuggeranong who have been the bench mark for a number of years in particular this year having only lost one game in the regular season were unable to pull of a stunning last minute victory against Queanbeyan which would have seen them have the week off and straight into the Grand Final. In a game that had plenty of entertaining rugby and kept the crowd on the edge of their seats, Tuggeranong were incapable of cracking the Whites line in the final stages of the second half to book a place in what would have been there 6th consecutive Grand Final. The Minor Premiers were lead by fly half Isaac Thompson who scored 20 points including 2 tries and Siope Naeta who was a handful with some barnstorming runs. Vikings, renowned for their defense, averaged only 12 points against them a game, managed to leak 30 plus points for second time in consecutive matches, coincidently results in another loss after going down to Wests in rd 13. It is safe to say that this week at training they will be working hard on their defensive shape and effort after Gungahlin put on an attacking display against Wests scoring 45 points. Despite the hiccup, Tuggeranong have enough experience and ability to regroup and focus on the task ahead. In doing so they will be boosted by the return of regular hooker Michael Henry who missed last weekend match through injury as well as the inclusion on contracted player Jarred Butler. Both these players will play a key role in Vikings improved defensive efforts as well as general big game experience. Gungahlin like any other team on their day are a very dangerous team and on Sunday in the minor semi final, the Eagles were well and truly on song. As a team the Eagles were able to convert defensive pressure in points as they frustrated Wests attack. In their previous game against Royals, Gungahlin were shell shocked as Royals put 35 unanswered points on them through sheer determination and intensity and it can be said that the Eagles learnt from that lesson and applied the same method on Wests. After 55 minutes Gungahlin led by 40-0 before Wests came back to put some credibility in the score line. This weekend against Tuggeranong we can expect Gungahlin to apply the same principle, except they must be weary that there is no doubt Tuggeranong will have identified this key tactic and have worked on trying to disrupt Gungahlin’s momentum. A number of changes have been made to last weekend side through injury and unavailability which will seen Dan Mannix slot into fly half, Jordan Fulivai named at inside centre for the injured Matt Hawke, meaning James Lovell who played over three quarters of the 1st grade game will start at fullback. Connor O’Byrne will replace Captain Ben McGee in the second row also. Key match ups in this weekend fixture will be the battle of the back rowers as both teams love the physicality and will contently put pressure on each other at the breakdown. Another will be the battle of the centre’s with young gun Jordan Fulivia taking on Rodney Iona at inside and Mitch Connelly and Nigel Ah Wong going head to head. Both centre pairing have a combination of skill, speed, size and power so it will be a very interesting clash. The last time these two teams played: Round 12, 2014 (Tuggeranong 22 def Gungahlin 12)

MATCH PREVIEW A strong 1st half from Royals meant that Uni-Norths were playing catch up rugby and unfortunately were unable to produce a second half turn around, going down 28-14. Jindabyne will be fresh and ready to go after not playing last weekend as they play in their first preliminary final. Both teams will be expect to throw the ball around and look to score plenty of points.

MATCH PREVIEW Tuggeranong had a hard fought match against Queanbeyan in the Major Semi final and unfortunately off second best with both teams playing some very hard and entertaining rugby. Royals on the other hand after a dominant 1st half found them self behind on the score board in the dying moments of the second half before a bit of luck saw them capitalize on a Wests error to score and win the match.

MATCH PREVIEW Minor Premiers Tuggeranong were outplayed by a very enthusiastic Royals team in the Major Semi Final and will be looking to bounce back. The Eagles displayed they are genuine title contenders after defeating last year’s champions Queanbeyan thanks to a hatrick from half back Mitch Ward. This time last year these two teams met and it was Gungahlin who came away with win and a spot in the Grand Final.

MATCH PREVIEW These two teams were only separated by 1 point on the competition ladder and in the games they played in the regular season; one was a draw and the other Gungahlin won by 4 points. Expect this match up to be like their previous encounters except the level of intensity, physicality and skills will no doubt increase with their season on the line.

MONARO DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:

st

It’s the final round for 1 division before the finals get under way and for most teams this weekend fixtures are about fine tuning there team before the business end of the season starts. st

The 1 grade top 4 is already sorted with Goulburn comfortably taking out the minor premiers however they are yet to take on RMC and will be taking them on this week which will give an indication how far RMC have come and if Goulburn will be challenged. This match up will be the match of the round. Both teams have shown their dominance over the competition and were evident in their winnings on the weekend in which both clubs scored over 50 points in their fixtures. rd

Cooma have secured 3 spot after a late run of form and this weekend will take on Hall who will be looking to finish on a high after a disappointing loss to RMC in rd 12. Cooma were far too good for ADFA winning 41-19 last round and will want to continue building before they take on ADFA again in the Minor Semi Final. Yass will finish of a below par season by their standards against ADFA in Yass and will aim finish off in style as the look towards next year. Hammered by injuries the Rams are nowhere near the level they were last year which won them the competition.

SECOND DIVISION: As we come into the back end of the season, a lot is still on the line for three of the 5 clubs, as the battle st nd rd for 1 , 2 and 3 is still up for grabs. Taralga are comfortably leading the competition but a loss in the coming weeks will open up a great opportunity for st Jindabyne and Crookwell to overtake them in 1 place. At present it is pretty much the Tigers to lose. This weekend one of these match will provide an indication in which the direct the ladder will be heading with Taralga taking on Crookwell in Taralga. Crookwell will be fresh from the bye, while the Tigers are coming off an impressive win over Bungendore. If Taralga win it is almost certain they will be minor premiers, while a loss it is game on. Jindabyne held off a gallant Boorowa outfit to win 2417 which included an important bonus point. The game riddled by disruptions due to two players being sent off meant that no team could find any rhythm. This weekend Jindabyne take on Bungendore in there last home game of the season. Boorowa will have a much need week off before they take on Taralga and Crookwell in the final rounds as they search for their first win.

Expectations of Behaviour Guidelines The Expectations of Behaviour Guidelines are a simple outline for parents, teachers, coaches and players to ensure everyone is given the opportunity to enjoy the game to the maximum level. Rugby has always been a game that prides itself on fair play and enjoyment for all, so please adhere to these guidelines to ensure this continues. For further information, please go to www.rugby.com.au/communityrugby These guidelines have been developed to: - Maintain the elements of enjoyment and satisfaction in Rugby; - Make adults aware that young people play to satisfy themselves and not necessarily to satisfy adults or members of their own peer group; - Improve the physical fitness of youth by encouraging participation in Rugby by making it attractive, safe and enjoyable for all young people; and - Constantly remind administrators, coaches, teachers, referees and parents that Rugby must be administered, taught and provided, for the good of those young people who wish to play the game. It is their game. Players -

Play for enjoyment, not just to please your parents, teacher or coach. Play by the laws of the game. Never argue with the referee’s decision. Let your captain or coach ask any necessary questions. Control your temper – no ‘mouthing off’. Work equally hard for yourself and for your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will your own. Be a good sport. Applaud all the good play, whether it is done by your team or your opponent. Shake hands with all of the opposing team at the conclusion of the match, and clap them off in the spirit of good sportsmanship. Treat all players as you yourself would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take advantage of any player. Treat everyone equally regardless of sex, disability, ethnic origin or religion. Remember that the goals of the game are - to have fun, improve your skills and feel good. Co-operate with your coach, teacher, team mates, referee and opponents, for without them you do not have a game.

Parents/Spectators - Remember that young people are involved in Rugby for their enjoyment, not yours. - Encourage your children to play by the laws. - Teach young people that honest effort is as important as victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment. - Remember that young people learn best by example. Applaud good play from both teams. - Do not publicly question the referee’s judgement and never his/her honesty. - Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from the game. - Recognise the importance of volunteer coaches, teachers and referees. They give their time and resources to provide a game for young participants. Coaches/Teachers -

Be reasonable in your demands on the young player’s time, energy and enthusiasm. Teach your players the laws of the game and for them to play within the laws. Ensure that all players get a game. The ‘just average’ players need and deserve equal time. Remember that young people play for fun and enjoyment and that winning is only a part of it. Never ridicule the players for making errors or losing a game. Be professional and accept responsibilities for your actions. Display high standards in language, behaviour, manner, dress, punctuality and preparation. Develop team respect for the ability of opponents, as well as the judgement of referees and opposing coaches. Discourage excessive talk on the field. Insist on a disciplined approach by the players.
