John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 14 Saturday, 19th July 2014 Its round 14 which means this is the end of the John I Dent Cup regular season for 2014. With the shorten season this year’s competition has been one of the most hotly contested competition in recent years. The Tuggeranong Vikings have been crowned the Minor Premiers winning 11 of their 12 games and were on track st to finish undefeated before Wests pulled off a great round 13 win in the final minutes of the game. While 1 place has been confirmed the remaining three spots are still up for grabs between 4 teams meaning there is a lot still to play for.

Match of the Round:

Royals (5th) v Gungahlin (2nd) – Phillip Oval, Phillip First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm

This match up will be one to watch with so much riding on the outcome of this game. With The Eagles two nd points clear on the ladder if they win this weekend they can lock down 2 spot and will be taking on Tuggeranong in the Major Semi Final next weekend. If Gungahlin lose it presents a great opportunity for nd Queanbeyan to overtake them and finish 2 bearing The Whites defeat Wests. Coming into this match Gungahlin will be quiet pleased with their form after defeating Queanbeyan at Queanbeyan 19-15 last weekend. Backrower Mesu Dolokoto stood out for the Eagles and was award the Skins Man of the Match prize for that match. Royals have a simple equation if they are to play finals footy this year and that is, win with a 4 try bonus point and hope Queanbeyan are able to defeat Wests and Wests don’t secure a bonus point. That equation is easier said than done and after the defensive effort Gungahlin procedure last weekend, Royals will have their work cut out for them. In saying that, we can expect Royals to come out firing and look to use the ball as much as possible in order try and secure the all important bonus point win. The last time these two teams played: Round 7, 2014 (Royals 29 def Gungahlin 20)

Wests (4th) v Queanbeyan (3rd), Jamison Oval, Jamison First Grade: 3.15pm, Reserve Grade: 1.50pm, Colts: 12.25pm

Like the Royals Gungahlin fixture this match also has influence on the outcome of the top four. Wests will be riding high after they produce a memorable 39-31 victory over ladder leaders Tuggeranong to hand Vikings their first loss and put Wests in a favorable position coming into the last round. Ahead of Royals by 5 points, th if Wests secure a bonus point they have locked in the 4 and final spot, however if they don’t The Lions will be hoping that result go their way and they live to play another game. nd

Queanbeyan suffered a disappointing 4 point loss to Gungahlin derailing their chances to cement 2 place for 2014. Due to the result, The Whites are in a position where they must win if they want to have any chance of playing in the Major Semi final meaning they will get two bites of the cherry to play in the Grand Final. With so much on the line, Queanbeyan will without a doubt be up for this match as they look to take some confidence and form into the finals. The last time these two teams played: Round 7, 2014 (Wests 29 def Queanbeyan 17)

Uni-Norths (6th) v Easts (7th) – ANU North Oval, Turner First Grade: 2:35pm, Reserve Grade: 1:10pm, Colts: 1:45am

The Owls will be out to finish their season on a high after turning around a disastrous 2013 season to this year challenge for a finals spot. Uni-Norths, after winning only one game last year in the final round kick started their quest for a finals birth with a dramatic win in round 4 and since then were been able to secure 3 more victories before their chances of a finals birth finished in there round 13 loss to Vikings. Taking on Easts this weekend will be no easy challenge as Easts will be out to also finish on a high and if it is anything like there 2013 round 19 clash it will be a very exciting game. Jordan Thompson after impressive form in st colts has been named to start in his 1 grade debut this weekend. Easts have not had the same success they had last year when they finished the 2013 season with 4 wins, however despite the disappointing season they have had some occasions to celebrate. There impressive and hard fought 28-26 victory over Wests in front of their home fans in round 9 was exciting while also there round 7 fixture against Uni-Norths at Griffith Oval was a great day for the club as they celebrated the inaugural ‘Owen Brown Memorial Trophy’ which will be annual match between the two clubs for years to come. The last time these two teams played: Round 7, 2014 (Uni-Norths 31 def Easts 28)

MATCH PREVIEW Like 1st grade this is another crucial game regarding final placing on the ladder for the final series. Gungahlin need to win if they are to have an opportunity to secure 2nd spot on the ladder. The Eagles scored a bonus point victory of Queanbeyan which will boost their confidence coming into the match. Royals on the other hand need to win this game and rely on result to go their way if they are to have any chance in locking in the fourth and final spot in the finals.

The 4th and final spot in the final series is being hotly contested between Gungahlin, Royal and Wests and this match up has a direct input on who will progress. Royals sit 2 points clear of Gungahlin and Wests and if Royals win they will secure 4th place. If Gungahlin win, they will then be relying of Queanbeyan Colts to beat Wests in order for the Eagles to play in the Minor Semi Final. With so much on the line, this match will be one to watch and is the colts match of the round.

MATCH PREVIEW With the top 4 already decided in 3rd grade, both these clubs will be playing for positions on the ladder. The all important major semi final gives clubs a second chance at making the Grand Final if they lose. Royals did not have a game last weekend due to Easts forfeiting, while Gungahlin took home the competition points defeating Queanbeyan and a tight and entertaining match. Expect this match up to be the same.

This 4th grade match will be another important match with finals next weekend. Royals had th bye last week and will be out to send a message they are up there a premiership contenders despite Tuggeranong’s and Queanbeyan stronghold over the rest of the teams. Gungahlin narrowly lost to Queanbeyan last weekend receiving a bonus point for their effort. The last time these two played Royals made easy work winning 66-10 but expect the result to be a lot closer this time around.

MATCH PREVIEW Both Uni-Norths and Easts have had forgettable season in 2014, but will both be looking to end it on a high. Easts surprised Uni-Norths and secured a dramatic win in there round 7 match which has resulted in Easts only win this season. Whereas Uni-Norths are still searching for the first win and this weekend creates a great opportunity for them.

The Owls colts will feature in this years final series after securing 3rd spot on the ladder. This match up against Easts will give them a great opportunity to fine tune combinations in preparation for the finals. Easts though will be out to disrupt Uni-Norths preparation and finish there season on off with their first win. The last time these two played, Easts tested the Owls in the first half before uni-Norths flexed their muscles in the 2nd half.

MATCH PREVIEW With this being the final round there are still spots up for grabs in 2nd grade. Wests currently sit in 4th and need a win if they are to secure a spot in this year’s final. Queanbeyan though are currently sitting 2nd however are only two points clear Gungahlin who are in 3rd. A win for Queanbeyan will cement 2nd spot, while a loss could see them drop to 3rd. The Whites defeated Wests 48-14 last time they played but with so much on the line it will be a very tight game.

Wests have the difficulty of needing to overcome competition heavy weights Queanbeyan if they are to secure the final spot on the colts ladder. Queanbeyan are coming off a big win against Gungahlin and will be confident while Wests will have to quickly turn it around after copping a 597 loss. The last time these two teams played it was a close match with Queanbeyan taking the points 22-10.

MATCH PREVIEW The top four in 3rd grade has already been settled and unfortunately for Wests this will be there last game of the season. Despite the outcome Wests will be looking finish their season off on a high in front of their home fans. Queanbeyan though will be out to gain some form coming into the finals after ther loss on the weekend to Gungahlin. These two teams last time had a 19 all draw.

Both Wests and Queanbeyan will be featuring in this year’s final series so while this match has no impact on their placing on the table it will be a vital in terms of gaining confidence and preparing for their matches next week. Wests went down quiet convincingly to Tuggeranong last weekend 43-12 while Queanbeyan were pushed by Gungahlin 26-19. There round 7 clash saw Queanbeyan edge out Wests 22-14.

2014 Women’s Competition Round 10 It is the final round of the competition for the girls before they undertake the final series. There are still a number of matches to be played due to rescheduling so positions on the tables are not yet set in stone. Uni-Norths are starting showing why they are a competition favourite demolishing Queanbeyan last weekend 48-5. Anthea Clarke scored a hatrick for Owls in their 8 tires to 1 win. TEAM Royals like Uni-Norths also demonstrated their competition favouritism with a 41-0 win over Jindabyne. Royals Fullback Courtney Livermore scored a

hatrick in the game at Griffith Oval. This weekend, due to the competition restructure, Uni-Norths will again play Queanbeyan this time at Uni-Norths and Royals will travel to Jindabyne to take on the Miss Piggies. Women’s Division P

MONARO DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:

SECOND DIVISION:

Cooma and Yass again provided the competition with a very exciting and thrilling match of the round with Cooma clinging on to a 1 point lead to take the competition points winning 16-15. The win now has rd Cooma jump to 3 on the competition ladder. For Yass their chances of a finals appearance are very slim after last week’s result but with 3 games remaining and results going their way, they could sneak in.

Taralga have again showed they are the team to beat defeating Jindabyne at Jindabyne in terrible conditions. Despite the terrible conditions both teams will able to score 4 try bonus points in the 33-25 win for the Tigers. Both teams were able to score 5 try’s each, but goal kicking proved to be the difference with Taralga converting 4/5 and Jindabyne 0/5. Taralga’s Matt Chalker crossed for a double while the bush pigs had Andrew McDonald and Matt Caldwell scored doubles.

Goulburn continue to get stronger and are looking very hard to beat after thrashing Hall 47-8. Goulburn’s Jack Brims and Mick Webber crossed the stripe on two occasions each in their 7 try to 1 victory. The Dirty Reds are yet to be tested this year and will continue to grow in confidence as the finals loom. In round 12 Goulburn will take on Cooma at home this weekend in what will be a test for them. Cooma have started to find some promising form having won 3 games in a row. Goulburn will also be celebrating there and ladies day and will all also be promoting ‘Goulburn says no to domestic violence’ that day. The other fixture this weekend will be Yass and RMC at Yass. Yass will need to upset undefeated RMC if they are to have any chance of finals footy. RMC have not played a game in 3 weeks so there could be an opportunity for the Rams to get hand RMC there first lost.

Crookwell took on Boorowa at Boorowa in the other round 10 match and like Taralga and Jindabyne; the match was played in atrocious conditions. Crookwell were far too good outscoring Boorowa 23-0 but were unable secure a 4 try bonus point. As a result of the victory has Crookwell sitting 5 points behind Taralga nd in 2 place. This weekend’s match of the round Jindabyne v Crookwell at Jindabyne. Jindabyne now sit 3 points behind Crookwell and a win this weekend could see nd the Bushpigs jump into 2 spot. If Crookwell win they nd will still remain in 2 with Taralga have the bye and receiving an automatic 4 points. This match will be a close affair and we can expect a big crowd at Jindabyne with the women’s also playing before the match.

In the final match of round 11 Bungendore will host Boorowa in a must win for both teams. If Boorowa win it will be their first victory and it will put them back in finals contention, where as if Bungendore win they will increase the gap between them and Boorowa.

BRUMBIES PROVINCIAL RUN RIOT OVER AUSTRALIAN POLICE Congratulations to the Brumbies Provincial Representative Side who fought off a gallant second half effort from Australian Police Rugby Union to win 47-22 at GIO stadium tonight. The home team got away to a flying start thanks to the silky skills and footwork from former Fiji International Dan Rawaqa, who had the APRU defence clutching at thin air. Rawaqa, along with former Canterbury Crusader Marika Vanibaka, formed a formidable combination in the backline, having a hand in all 5 first half tries for the Provincial team. The night seemed to be going downhill further with Provincial Scrumhalf and goal kicker Jack Burey making APRU pay with his boot, landing 5 from 5 conversions. Despite the best efforts of APRU, the first half belonged to Brumbies Provincial, who took a 35-3 lead into the sheds. Whatever was said in the APRU change room at half time seemed to work, some great interplay from the forwards earning them their opening try for the match. The scoreboard now read 35-10 and the Police were now running with a renewed sense of vigor. This newfound sense of belief was reflected on the scoreboard when Ben Pearson and Josh Munro ran in two quick tries to bring APRU within 13 points and trailing 35-22. However, any chance of a comeback victory was soon put on the backburner when flanker Dave Akkersdyk capitalised on a scrum mishap to crash over for Provincial, putting the match beyond reach for the APRU. In a funny moment, Akkersdyk, who possesses almost a mirror image of Western Force winger Nick ‘the honey badger’ Cummins, was in seventh heaven when Cummins greeted him with a post try hug. From this point on Provincial cruised home with a late try taking the final score to 47-22. Akkersdyk was elated post match when recalling the try the sealed the match.“The hug was better than the try itself for me! I was in the right place at the right time and to get a hug from the honeybadger before he leaves Australia was awesome.” He said. “We did go to sleep a little in the second half but it’s been great to get together with all the regional guys and represent Brumbies Rugby.” While injured APRU captain Dan Powell was left to rue a poor first half.“Full credit to the brumbies, they blew us away in the first half and we played catch up from there.” Said Powell. “We had a disruptive lead up with a lot of guys pulling out due to court proceedings, but it’s been a thrill to play at GIO stadium before the UC Brumbies.” BRUMBIES PROVINCIAL 47 (TRIES: Matt Caldwell 2, Dan Rawaqa, Ryan Morgan, Jayden Stanton, Jack Burey, Dave Akkersdyk. Expectations of Behaviour Guidelines The Expectations of Behaviour Guidelines are a simple outline for parents, teachers, coaches and players to ensure everyone is given the opportunity to enjoy the game to the maximum level. Rugby has always been a game that prides itself on fair play and enjoyment for all, so please adhere to these guidelines to ensure this continues. For further information, please go to www.rugby.com.au/communityrugby These guidelines have been developed to: - Maintain the elements of enjoyment and satisfaction in Rugby; - Make adults aware that young people play to satisfy themselves and not necessarily to satisfy adults or members of their own peer group; - Improve the physical fitness of youth by encouraging participation in Rugby by making it attractive, safe and enjoyable for all young people; and - Constantly remind administrators, coaches, teachers, referees and parents that Rugby must be administered, taught and provided, for the good of those young people who wish to play the game. It is their game. Players -

Play for enjoyment, not just to please your parents, teacher or coach. Play by the laws of the game. Never argue with the referee’s decision. Let your captain or coach ask any necessary questions. Control your temper – no ‘mouthing off’. Work equally hard for yourself and for your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will your own. Be a good sport. Applaud all the good play, whether it is done by your team or your opponent. Shake hands with all of the opposing team at the conclusion of the match, and clap them off in the spirit of good sportsmanship. Treat all players as you yourself would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take advantage of any player. Treat everyone equally regardless of sex, disability, ethnic origin or religion. Remember that the goals of the game are - to have fun, improve your skills and feel good. Co-operate with your coach, teacher, team mates, referee and opponents, for without them you do not have a game.

Parents/Spectators - Remember that young people are involved in Rugby for their enjoyment, not yours. - Encourage your children to play by the laws. - Teach young people that honest effort is as important as victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment. - Remember that young people learn best by example. Applaud good play from both teams. - Do not publicly question the referee’s judgement and never his/her honesty. - Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from the game. - Recognise the importance of volunteer coaches, teachers and referees. They give their time and resources to provide a game for young participants. Coaches/Teachers -

Be reasonable in your demands on the young player’s time, energy and enthusiasm. Teach your players the laws of the game and for them to play within the laws. Ensure that all players get a game. The ‘just average’ players need and deserve equal time. Remember that young people play for fun and enjoyment and that winning is only a part of it. Never ridicule the players for making errors or losing a game. Be professional and accept responsibilities for your actions. Display high standards in language, behaviour, manner, dress, punctuality and preparation. Develop team respect for the ability of opponents, as well as the judgement of referees and opposing coaches. Discourage excessive talk on the field. Insist on a disciplined approach by the players.
