John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 11 Thursday 4th – Saturday 6th June

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Tuggeranong (1) v Gungahlin (26) @ Viking Park First Grade: Thursday 4th June - 7:30pm, Reserve Grade: 6:10pm, Colts: 4:45pm Previous Result: Tuggeranong 22 defeated Gungahlin 12 – Round 10, 2014 The Tuggeranong Vikings have returned the favour to Queanbeyan defeating them in their own backyard 29-24 in last weekend’s top of the table clash. Tuggeranong have now wow four in a row since Queanbeyan defeated them back in round 5. Rodney Iona was a standout for Vikings and was awarded the Skins Man of the Match while three of the four tries scored by Tuggeranong came from their forward pack. Exciting back rower Rowan Perry finally makes his long awaited return to the starting side after an extended period off due to injury. With Queanbeyan guaranteed 4 competition points because of the bye, Tuggeranong must win if they are to remain on top of the table. The Gungahlin Eagles are starting to hit their straps in the season with a convincing second half effort which saw the leave Uni-Norths behind. Leading 7-3 at half time, The Eagles ran in 24 unanswered points to win 31-3. What was encouraging for Gungahlin was they defensive effort which meant they didn’t allow the Owls to score a try, something they haven’t done all season. This will be a great tests for the side this Thursday night, who currently have 2 wins and a draw and are 9 points outside the top 4. Only one change has been made from last week’s team and that is Chris Grierson coming in for Pato Noriega Royals (4) v Easts (7) @ Phillip Oval First Grade: Saturday 6th June - 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts 12.15pm Previous Result: Royals 27 defeated Easts 7 – Round 13, 2014 Missed opportunities against Wests cost Royals in the end as they went down 27-20 back in round 9. Since then Royals have had the bye and will be fresh and ready as they look to continue one from their previous three game winning streak. Currently Royals sit 8 points clear of Uni-Norths and 9 clear of Gungahlin, however they trail Wests by 7 competition points. With no more than 6 games remaining for all clubs, we are starting to get down to the business end where every competition point is vital as clubs look to close the gap or generate a gap. Royals have named Dean Paragalli & Harry Burey in their starting side this weekend. Both players are colt’s age and represented the ACT & Australia U20’s Barbarians this year, so expect them to bring a lot of energy to the side. Easts were unable to contain an impressive Wests outfit, going down 49-14. Despite the result, Easts had Brumbies Players Blake Enever and JP Smith running out for them, which provided some muscle up front. It was also a great opportunity for players in the clubs to pick the brains of super rugby player. This week will be another tough game for Easts, and unfortunately they will not have any of their Brumbies players available, however it will a great opportunity for their younger players coming through to step up against quality opposition.

Like fourth grade, Vikings were able to make light work of Queanbeyan winning comfortably with a bonus point. That victory has Tuggeranong on top of the 3rd grade ladder. In game that on paper and form should have been a lot closer, Gungahlin were not match for Uni-Norths, going down 29-7. The result now has the Eagles sitting third on the ladder.

There will be no game in 4th grade between Tuggeranong & Gungahlin as a result of the Eagles forfeiting this match. Last weekend Tuggeranong came away in a bonus point victory against Queanbeyan, while Gungahlin were finished the game strong, but fell short against Uni-Norths 19-17.

MATCH PREVIEW Tuggeranong suffered their third loss of the season in a hard fought battle against the Queanbeyan Whites. Only two points separated the two clubs as it came down to the wire. Gungahlin on the other hand were unable to rein in Uni-Norths despite finishing off the game strong, going down 23-19. The Eagles only sit 5 points outside the top 4 so a win on Thursday night will snap a two game losing streak and generate quiet a close & interesting finish as we near the back end of the season.

Vikings colts bounced back after their round 10 loss, to hand Queanbeyan 5th loss of the season. Tuggeranong also held Queanbeyan scoreless with the game 32-0. Gungahlin thought came up against an in form Owls team and it showed with Uni-Norths running away with the game 31-14 after a tight first half. These two clubs are separated by 12 competition points, however Gungahlin are locked in a battle for fourth with Queanbeyan.

Congratulations to Royals Player Jay Cash who will play his 250th game for the club. Jay commenced playing for Royals as an u16’s junior in 1996. He played his first season of senior rugby for Royals colts in 1999 and has played mostly first grade ever since. Jay’s made numerous Grand Final appearances over the years and in the early part of his career was selected in ACT based representative teams including ACT U21’s and Canberra Vikings. Jay’s also a long standing & hard working board member at Royals. He is as tough as teak and epitomises what the Royals club is all about. Well done Jay on a great mile stone from everyone at Royals.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals suffered a heartbreaking 1 point to loss Wests back in round 9 before they enjoyed the weekend off with the bye. Royals currently sit in 5th spot on the ladder with Wests only head of them based on for and against. A Bonus point win to Royals will see them leap frog Wests who have the bye this weekend. Easts on the other hand produced a disappointing display going down 80-0. Easts have really troubled teams throughout the season thus far but sadly they were not match for Wests in round 10.

Both Royals and Easts 3rd grade are yet to win a game this year and for one team there losing streak will be over. Royals currently sit two points ahead of Easts thanks to a draw back in round 2, but expect this game to be one tough match up. Easts started well against Wests last weekend with the half time deficit being 12-5, but unfortunately let Wests storm home to win 43-5.

BRUMBIES PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT 2015 Monaro Representative Team Congratulations to the following players who have been selected in the 2015 Monaro Representative Team to compete in the 2015 Brumbies Provincial Tournament. The Brumbies Provincial Tournament will be held this year in Wagga Wagga over the June Long Weekend at Connolly Rugby Park. The Monaro Representative Team is made up of players in the Monaro 1st and 2nd Division Competitions. They will play matches against Southern Inland and South Coast as well a match against South Australia, who will be taking part in the tournament for the second year in a row. While the matches against South Australia will not count towards the tournament it will be a great opportunity for teams to test themselves against other opposition. At the conclusion of the tournament, the Brumbies Provincial team (made up of Southern Inland, Monaro and South Coast only) will be selected to take on the NSW Country Cockatoos as the curtain raiser to the Aquis Brumbies vs. Canterbury Crusaders at GIO Stadium on Saturday 13th June. Best of luck to all players involved in the tournament.
