John I Dent Cup Preview: Semi Finals Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July After a long and exciting regular season, the final series is finally here and we have 4 well worthy teams fighting it out for the John I Dent Cup. This season has been full of action with the fight for the top 4 coming down to the wire after constant change over the 14 Rounds. nd

rd

Tuggeranong have led the whole way, with Gungahlin and Queanbeyan fighting it out for 2 and 3 spot while Wests and Royals battled for the remaining spot. It wasn’t until after the result of round 14 in which we found out who finished where and it was one of closest race for the finals and positions in recent years. In the end a nd bonus point victory to Queanbeyan over Wests meant they secured 2 spot by 2 points after Gungahlin lost to Royals. However there was more to these matches with Wests coming away with a 4 try bonus point meaning they edge out Royals by 1 point who had to win with a bonus point and hope Wests didn’t get any competition points if they had a chance of making the final points. With these teams experiencing many of the highs and lows in trying to make the top 4 and now having done that, the rollercoaster ride hasn’t finished yet with the stakes even higher as it becomes sudden death for th some this weekend and for others a chance to be one step closer to lifting the John I Dent Cup on August 9 .

Major Semi Final: Saturday 26th Tuggeranong (1) v Queanbeyan (2) – 3:25pm, Viking Park Both Tuggeranong and Queanbeyan have played many finals matches in recent years and like those previous matches we can expect this game to again come down to the wire. This year Tuggeranong have had the wood over Queanbeyan winning both encounters, but these matches have only been decided by 3 points (round 3, 20-17 & Round 11, 19-9). Tuggeranong are renowned for throwing the ball around, and have racked up some big scores this year, but there gritty 3 points wins over Queanbeyan have shown they are also able to get the job down without scoring many points. Vikings will be without Captain Tim Cree this Saturday, but the rest of the team will be th fresh from the bye and ready to rip in as they looked to secure their 4 consecutive title. In order to do that, Vikings will be relying on the experience of those players who have been here in the finals before while also feeding off the excitement of those new players yet to experience success. Watch for Tuggeranong centre paring Rodney Iona and Nigel Ah Wong to create havoc in the back line with their attacking skills. Queanbeyan’s lead up to this game hasn’t been the best, but at the same time may have prepared them perfect for this encounter. The Whites lost to Gungahlin in rd 13, but then turned it around in rd 14 to make easy work of Wests. Experience both loses and wins could give Queanbeyan the hunger and attitude they need if they are knock off Tuggeranong. As like any Queanbeyan team, we expect them to lead from the front with their hard working no nonsense forwards and while there classy backs finish off the forwards hard work. The key players for Queanbeyan today will be there leader Dan Penca and front rower Les making who will set the bench mark for the rest of the team. The last time these two teams played: Round 11, 2014 (Tuggeranong 12 def Queanbeyan 9) th

Minor Semi Final: Sunday 27 th Gungahlin (3) v Wests (4 ) – 3:15pm, Viking Park These two teams couldn’t have had a more opposite feeling coming into the final with Wests scrapping through, while Gungahlin butched a great opportunity to be one game away from the Grand Final. In saying that both teams will have already forgotten last weekend and know that now its finals, it’s a different ball game and anything can happy. The Eagles will be boosted by the return of Brumby Lionel Cronje who provides great direction from fly half while also involving himself in the play as much as possible with def touches of kicks that get Gungahlin’ on the front foot. Matt Hawke also returns and like Cronje will provide not only direction but important leadership. What will be important for the Eagles is that there impressive Backrow of Dolokot, Duffy and Ilolhia continue their amazing combinations and wreak mayhem at the breakdown and in attack and defense. th

Wests were in this position last year, coming into the final in 4 but manage to save their worst performance for last bowing out in disappointing style. This year though Wests will be out to make amends of that performance and show they are a finals team that can go all the way. The Lions will draw confidence from their performance in rd 13 which saw them hand Tuggeranong there first defeat and use that mindset that they can beat any team on their day. Like Gungahlin Wests will rely on their back rower to give go forward to the back who are capable of scoring from anywhere on the field. The last time these two teams played: Round 11, 2014 (Gungahlin 24 def Wests 7)

Photo Above:- Dr Jimmy Taylor pictured above with Chief Minister Katy Gallagher at the 2013 Chief Ministers Gold Awards Canberra Royals stalwart and 4th Grade Captain-Coach, Dr Jim Taylor will play his 450th match for the club this weekend in the 4th Grade minor semi-final. Jim has played for Royals at all levels and grades for over 40 years starting out as a junior in U/9’s and culminated his junior rugby with selection in the Australian Schools team of 1982 with the likes of Steve Tynman and Brett Papworth. He started his senior career with Royals the following year, playing one match in 3rd Grade, one match in 2 nd Grade with his third match graduating to first grade where he remained for the following 10+ years during the Royals dominant era in the 80’s and early 90’s. Also during this period he played regularly with a strong Canberra Kookaburra’s team and was also selected in the Emerging Wallabies for several tours. He has made an outstanding contribution to both the Royals Club and the ACT Rugby community in all aspects both on and off the field as a player, coach at both junior and senior level and a valuable board member. He is one of only three Royals players to have reached the 450 game milestone, the others being Kani Ferris and recent retired president, Brian ‘Buddha’ Paule. On behalf of everyone at Royals and the greater ACT Rugby Community we congratulate you Jimmy on such an amazing achievement, contribution and undying passion for Royals and the game of rugby.

2014 Women’s Competition FINAL SERIES Its finals time for the women’s competition and on Saturday we have an outstanding clash against the two competition heavy weights Uni-Norths and Royals.

be go all out and this match will be played at highest quality. Due to unfortunate circumstance it is disappointing that last years champions Queanbeyan have had to forfeit their minor semi final against Jindabyne result in the Miss Piggies going straight through to the Preliminary final.

MONARO DIVISION COMPETITION SECOND DIVISION: First Division’s regular season is winding up as it comes into the second last round. Goulburn has st easily secured the minor premiership in both 1 and nd 2 grade and are both yet to lose a game. In round 12 the dirty reds made light work of Goulburn win both grades by more than 60 points. While encouraging for Goulburn it means Cooma have to go back to the drawing board if they are to pose as a threat to winning the championship.

Jindabyne have shown some life defeating Crookwell and a very entertaining game which saw 11 tries scored. The 41-36 victory for the Bushpigs depicted so excellent running rugby and the difference between the two teams was one try. Both kicks kicked 4 conversions and one penalty. While the win was vital for Jindabyne, the down side for them was that Crookwell well able to secure 2 bonus points meaning the teams are now locked on 39 competition points.

The resurgence of RMC has come to an end with them losing their first game of the year to the lowly ranked Yass. RMC having not played for a couple week will be looking to regain that form which saw them win 7 games straight.

Taralga enjoyed the bye last weekend and are now 7 points clear at the top. Bungendore and Boorowa are still battling it out for the remaining spot in the final, but Boorowa’s chances took a blow going down to Bungendore 24-5.

This weekend’s match of the round will be Hall v RMC at Hall. Hall must win this fixture is they are to remain a chance of slotting into the top four while RMC will be out send a message that there loss was nothing but a minor slip in their quest for silverware.

This weekend Boorowa will be at home and will take on Jindabyne. While the odds are against Boorowa, playing in front of their home crowd always boost the team and give them an little bit more to play for. Hopefully Boorowa can pull off an upset and get ther first win.

FIRST DIVISION:

Goulburn will take on Yass in what may look as a miss match due to their positions on the table, but Yass always turn up to play Goulburn and well be confident are there impressive win.

After their win last weekend, Bungendore will host Taralga and will look to knock off the ladder leaders which will open up the chase for the Minor Premiership especially with Crookwell having the bye this weekend.

The final game of this round is Cooma v ADFA at Cooma, with both teams eyeing for finals positions this will be a very tight and tough match.

Expectations of Behaviour Guidelines The Expectations of Behaviour Guidelines are a simple outline for parents, teachers, coaches and players to ensure everyone is given the opportunity to enjoy the game to the maximum level. Rugby has always been a game that prides itself on fair play and enjoyment for all, so please adhere to these guidelines to ensure this continues. For further information, please go to www.rugby.com.au/communityrugby These guidelines have been developed to: - Maintain the elements of enjoyment and satisfaction in Rugby; - Make adults aware that young people play to satisfy themselves and not necessarily to satisfy adults or members of their own peer group; - Improve the physical fitness of youth by encouraging participation in Rugby by making it attractive, safe and enjoyable for all young people; and - Constantly remind administrators, coaches, teachers, referees and parents that Rugby must be administered, taught and provided, for the good of those young people who wish to play the game. It is their game. Players -

Play for enjoyment, not just to please your parents, teacher or coach. Play by the laws of the game. Never argue with the referee’s decision. Let your captain or coach ask any necessary questions. Control your temper – no ‘mouthing off’. Work equally hard for yourself and for your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will your own. Be a good sport. Applaud all the good play, whether it is done by your team or your opponent. Shake hands with all of the opposing team at the conclusion of the match, and clap them off in the spirit of good sportsmanship. Treat all players as you yourself would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take advantage of any player. Treat everyone equally regardless of sex, disability, ethnic origin or religion. Remember that the goals of the game are - to have fun, improve your skills and feel good. Co-operate with your coach, teacher, team mates, referee and opponents, for without them you do not have a game.

Parents/Spectators - Remember that young people are involved in Rugby for their enjoyment, not yours. - Encourage your children to play by the laws. - Teach young people that honest effort is as important as victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment. - Remember that young people learn best by example. Applaud good play from both teams. - Do not publicly question the referee’s judgement and never his/her honesty. - Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from the game. - Recognise the importance of volunteer coaches, teachers and referees. They give their time and resources to provide a game for young participants. Coaches/Teachers -

Be reasonable in your demands on the young player’s time, energy and enthusiasm. Teach your players the laws of the game and for them to play within the laws. Ensure that all players get a game. The ‘just average’ players need and deserve equal time. Remember that young people play for fun and enjoyment and that winning is only a part of it. Never ridicule the players for making errors or losing a game. Be professional and accept responsibilities for your actions. Display high standards in language, behaviour, manner, dress, punctuality and preparation. Develop team respect for the ability of opponents, as well as the judgement of referees and opposing coaches. Discourage excessive talk on the field. Insist on a disciplined approach by the players.
