John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 12 Saturday, 13 June

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Royals (5) v Tuggeranong (1) @ Phillip Oval First Grade: 12.25pm, Reserve Grade: 11.05am, Colts 9.45am Previous Result: Tuggeranong 38 defeated Royals13 – Rd 4, 2015

This weekend’s match of the round will be another classic with both teams in impressive form. Royals have now won 3 of their last four games including a 64-12 win over Easts last weekend which is setting them up for a big game against the competition front runners. Against Easts, Lausii Taliauli was a standout in attack scoring his second hattrick of the season in the 10 try romping. This weekend though tries may not come that easy as Tuggeranong have only let their try line be crossed for four or more times only on three occasions. Royals have made two changes to last week’s team with Tyson Tamihere and Ben Johnston returning. Tuggeranong currently sit 5 points clear at the top and have now won 5 games in a row. In a hard fought battle against Gungahlin last Thursday night, Vikings weren’t able to shake the Eagles until midway in the 2nd half where they ran away with the 50-18 win. Rodney Iona again showered his class and was awarded the skins man of the match for the second week in a row. Only two changes have been made to Tuggeranong team from last with, with Beau Mokotupu and Sione Taulua coming into the run on side.

Uni-Norths (5) v Queanbeyan (2) @ ANU North Oval First Grade: 12.25pm, Reserve Grade: 11.05am, Colts 9.45am Previous Result: Queanbeyan 33 defeated Uni-Norths 10 – Round 9, 2014

Uni-Norths have found themselves off the pace having now lost 4 in a row after a promising start. The Owls were unable to capitalise on first half opportunities against the Eagles in round 10. Despite missing the opportunity Uni were only down 7-3 at half time before Eagles were able to capitalise on Uni-Norths mistakes and run away for a 31-3 win. Fresh from a week off the Owls will need to be on their game, taking on competition heavy weights Queanbeyan. If the Owls are to make a run for the finals, they will need to win at least 4 of their last 6 games. Queanbeyan are coming off the back of a hard fought loss against Tuggeranong so they will be out to send a message to the competition they are still a team capable of secure the minor premiership. In typical Queanbeyan fashion, the Whites stormed home against Vikings in front of a very vocal crowd that were there for the clubs 60th Anniversary, but unfortunately they fell short in the dying moments. As we near the back end of the season Queanbeyan can’t afford to slip up as they currently sit 5 points behind Tuggeranong.

Easts (7) v Wests (3) @ Griffith Oval First Grade: 12.25pm, Reserve Grade: 11.05am Previous Result: Wests 49 defeated Easts 14 – Round 10, 2015

East weren’t at their best last weekend and were outplayed by a very slick Royals outfit. Again Easts face a tough task of Wests who they played only two rounds ago. Have recently just played them, Easts will know what area’s they will need to focus on they are to cause an upset and but a dint in Wests finals spot. Wests had the bye last weekend so the Loins are playing back to back matches against Easts. In the previous game, Wests scored 6 tries with a double going to Rob Buaserua and Seb Lorraway going home with a personal tally of 19 points. Having to play Easts again, expect this result to be a lot different and Easts to be out to get another win under their belt. A victory to Wests depending on result between Tuggeranong and Royals could see Wests potentially jump 6 or 7 points clear of Royals which will prove rather handy coming into the final rounds.

MATCH PREVIEW This is one of two massive matches in 2nd grade this weekend with all clubs in the top four playing each other. This fixture in 2 v 4 and a loss to royal could see them drop out of the top 4, while a win for Vikings and result going their way will see them close the gap on Queanbeyan. The last time these two played, Royals produce an impressive performance to hand Vikings a 21-19 loss. Like colts, this game could come down to the wire.

Royals & Tuggeranong along with Uni-Norths have created a gap between the rest of the colts competition and at the moment all three are battling it out for the all-important top 2 finish. The last time these two played back in round 4 Royals were able to hold off Tuggeranong, winning a nail bitter 8-7. Expect this game to be of similar closeness.

MATCH PREVIEW Queanbeyan 2nd grade remain undefeated thanks to another nail bitter against Tuggeranong where they won 12-10. That win has Queanbeyan 8 points clear of Vikings, but they now face another tough opponent this weekend in Uni-Norths who currently lead Royals and Gungahlin all who are eyeing those vital 3rd and 4th spots. As these two haven’t played each other yet, it will be interesting to see how the game goes.

Uni Colts played a makeup game against Wests last Thursday night and won comfortable 43-0 which has seen them close the gap on Royals on top. Queanbeyan on had the June long weekend off after a tough game against Tuggeranong in round 10. The Whites are in need of a win if they are to generate a gap between them and Gungahlin who have the bye this weekend. A win to Uni could also see them leap frog Royals if results go their way.

MATCH PREVIEW This clash will be the 3rd grade match of the round with Uni-Norths 2nd taking on Queanbeyan 5th. Between 2nd and 5th is only 4 competition points, so a win for Queanbeyan could see them going to second on the ladder. While Uni could stay in 2nd or dropped to 3rd. There are no other 3rd grade this weekend.

Like 3rd Grade this is the only 4th grade game being played. If Uni-Norths are to get a win it will close the gap on them in 4th place which in Queanbeyan. A win for Queanbeyan would see them jump into 2nd on the ladder as only 2 point separates them, Wests and Royals.

2015 WOMEN’S COMPETITION ROUND 5 Only one game was played back in round 4 and that was between Uni-Norths and Gungahlin. Uni-Norths needed to bounce back after their close lose to Tuggeranong and they certainly did that defeating Gungahlin 109-0 at North Oval. The Owls ran in an astonishing 19 tries which include 9 different players scoring tries. Jane Garraway scored 5 tries, while Talie Wilson and Kat Mill both score 4 tries each. These were outstanding individual efforts. Round 5 will see and very important game between Royals and Tuggeranong. Both are yet to play each other but they both have handed Uni-Norths there only losses. This game could come down to the wire and a win to Tuggeranong will mean jam at the top with Uni, Royals and Tuggeranong all potentially being on 15 competition points. Gungahlin will play a friendly this weekend against ADFA/RMC and will great for the girls to go back to basics after being outclassed by Uni-Norths.

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:

SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION

Goulburn’s 1st Grade 18 months unbeaten run continues after they pulled off a great escape against Hall to win 28-24. The Dirty Reds were behind by 10 points with 5 minutes to go before rallied and scored late to win the game. This top of the table clash certainly lived up to the expectations. Goulburn completed the double on that day with second grade winning 38-29.

Two round into the combine part of the competition the table is certainly starting to take shape, as well as some unexpected results occurring.

In the final match of that round back on the 30th May Yass were far too good in both grade winning second grade 56-26 and holding on to win 24-19. The victories were massive for the Rams playing away from home. After the June long weekend bye all teams are back on deck this weekend match of the round will be Goulburn v Cooma, a replay of last year’s Grand Final. A win could see Goulburn leap frog Hall, while Cooma have now lost three in a row and need to get their season back on track. RMC are back from military commitments and will travel to Yass for a double point’s game. Yass have now won two in a row and are gain confidence and momentum in 1st Grade. RMC are undefeated in 2nd grade and this will be a great clash between the two as both are in the top 4. The final match of round 8 is Hall v ADFA. Hall will be looking to bounce back after their loss in 1st Grade, while 2nd grade need to get some wins on the board if they are to catch Yass and secure the all-important top two finish.

Round 7 saw Bungendore and Crookwell rack up some big scores against Braidwood and Milton. The Mudchooks held Milton scoreless winning 48-0 while Crookwell made light work of Braidwood winning 65-7. Bungendore’s win has them now sitting in outright second, but due to south coast conference leaders Milton, they actually sit third on the ladder. Boorowa have now secured back to back wins in there thrilling 35-31 win over Batemans Bay. The victory has them sitting 5 points outside the top 4 and they will take on Milton in an important clash for both sides. Taralga made it a clean sweep for the Monaro clubs defeating Broulee 35-14. The Tigers are just outside the top 4 which is being hotly contested at the moment. Broulee have now dropped to 8th after their loss to Taralga and have forfeited their game against ladder leaders Jindabyne due to player unavailability and injuries. For Jindabyne, they will receive a bonus point 20-0 victory, taking them to 39 competition points. Other fixtures this weekend include a very important matchup between Braidwood v Taralga as only 1 point separates these two on the ladder. Crookwell will travel to Batemans Bay this weekend which will be an interesting clash, with the Boars desperate for a win. TEAM Jindabyne * Milton *
