John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 11 Saturday, 28th June 2014

Match of the Round: Wests (4th) v Gungahlin (3rd) – Jamison Oval, Jamison First Grade: 3.25pm, Reserve Grade: 1.50pm, Colts: 12.25pm This match up will be one to watch as the race for a spot in the finals is hotly contested and the outcome of this match will see some change on the ladder. Wests will be disappointed in their efforts on the weekend, letting slip an opportunity to jump in to 3rd place with a bonus point victory. After fighting their way back into the match and leading late in the second half, a try on full time to the Owls meant Wests went home with 2 competition points and not 5. Wests welcome Montana O’Neill, Andrew Parson and Gareth Watts into the starting side this week. Gungahlin pushed Vikings all the way in there Round 10 clash, only to fall short 22-12. The Eagles were boosted by the inclusion of Henry Speight who added some spark in their backline. The loss has Eagles sitting in 3rd place one point clear of Wests and 2 points clear of Royals. With the closeness of the competition you can see how important competition points are which is why outcome of this game is very important for a number of clubs. The last time these two teams played: Round 5, 2014 (Gungahlin 43 def Wests 18)

Royals (5th) v Uni-Norths (6th) – Phillip Oval, Phillip First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Royals are in need of a win this weekend if they are to remain alive in the races for the finals. After a Uni-Norths win against Wests last weekend Royals now sit 1 point behind Wests. Before the bye, Royals took on Tuggeranong at Viking Park and while having a number of players out, they still fell short, going down 29-8. This week, Royals will see the return of local hero Tom Staniforth who will add a lot to the side not just in his playing ability, but also his leadership. Tom just finished playing for the Australian u20’s in the IRB Junior World Cup. Uni-Norths secured just there third win of the season with a last minute 33-29 vicotry over Wests. The Owls were dominant in the first half securing a 4 try bonus point, but a poor second half let Wests back into the game and to take the lead late in the game. Edan Campbell-O’Brien was a stand out for the Owls scoring a double which included the match winner. Like Royals, Uni-Norths will welcome back Allan Alaalatoa back into the side after Australian u20’s duties. The Owls will also welcome back captain Bhiamie Williamson and Joe Ritchie to the starting side. The last time these two teams played: Round 3, 2014 (Royals 52 def Uni-Norths 13)

Queanbeyan (2nd) v Tuggeranong (1st) – Campese Oval, Queanbeyan First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Queanbeyan secured their first win at home for the season with a huge win over Easts 85-17. Second rower Michael Stolberg scored 4 of the 13 scored during the match while HP Momsen scored 25 points with 10/13 kicks and a try himself. This weekend will be a tougher task, taking on ladder leader Tuggeranong. Three points separated the two teams last time they played and this time we can expect another tight contest. Les Makin return to the front row after gaining experience with the Brumbies at the Singapore 10’s. His inclusion will add to an even more dominant forward pack. Tuggeranong were able to hold off Gungahlin to secure their 9 victory of the year and remain undefeated. The win has Tuggeranong well clear on top and hasn’t looked like being beaten just yet however, it was this time last year that Queanbeyan handed Tuggeranong there second defeat of the year at campese. Tuggeranong will also welcome back Rondey Iona and Nigel Ah Wong who also featured over in the Singapore 10’s for the Brumbies, while they will see the return on Aus 20’s player Joel Powell. The last time these two teams played: Round 3, 2014 (Tuggeranong 20 def Queanbeyan 10)

MATCH PREVIEW Wests 2nds have made some ground on 3rd place Gungahlin after their bonus point victory against Uni-Norths in rd 10. A win to Wests will have them 1 or 2 points behind Gungahlin, where as if the Eagles get up, they will create some much needed leeway between 3rd and 4th. Gungahlin will need to bounce back after a disappointing performance against Vikings.

The battle for the remaining two spots in the colts top 4 in heavily contested and if Wests are to stay in touch they will need to win this weekend after their 48-10 loss to the Owls. Gungahlin currently sit 2 points clear of Wests in 5th and both will be fighting hard to secure the important competition points and remaining in touch with the four.

MATCH PREVIEW With a loss to Uni-norths last weekend, Wests now are 2 points out of the top four behind Royals. Gungahlin sit in third 9 points clear of Wests, but need a victory will ensure they keep that space between them and Royals in 4th. Last time these two play Gungahlin won comfortably 50-26.

Whoever wins this match up will slot into 4th spot on the ladder next week, so we can expect both clubs to come out all guns blazing. The previous time Wests won 17-5 in a hard fought match, and this will be no different. Like 3rds, the battles for final positions is so close and this weekend’s results could see major changes to the ladder.

MATCH FACT – “PENCA REACHES GAME 100” th

Congratulations to inspirational Queanbeyan Whites skipper Dan Penca who will celebrate his 100 st 1 grade game of the club this Saturday when the locals take on undefeated competition leaders th Tuggeranong at the Whites home ground. Penca will become just the 35 player to crack the 100 game milestone for the Whites and joins a very select Club. Having joined the Whites straight from St Edmunds College, he quickly caught the eye of representative selectors and was selected in the 2007 Australian squad that went to the then Under 19’s World Cup, now replaced by the Under 20s competition. Penca hasn’t spent to many games in the lower grades with his current club tally at just 113 making this achievement all the more remarkable. Penca is also no stranger to picking up awards at the Clubs Annual Presentation evening having managed to only miss out in 2008 on taking home some silverware with ‘Best Forward’ and ‘Best and Fairest’ gongs aplenty. Penca took over as Whites skipper in 2010 and has the honour of being one of the few Whites players to hoist the John I Dent Cup, that being the last year the Whites took the title, ironically against today’s opponents in the epic 30-28 victory. He has been a regular selection in ACT Griffins representative teams and his 2014 form is already proving to be right up there as one of his best seasons.

MATCH PREVIEW This competition round for 2nd grade is shaping up as being one of the most important for clubs looking for a top four finish. This fixture is the match of the round at it is 1 v 2 and a bonus point win to Queanbeyan could see them leap frog Tuggeranong on the ladder. The last time these two played it was a 24 all draw so expect another close encounter.

A win to Vikings this weekend could all but sure up the minor premiership; however a loss could open the door for Queanbeyan to take top spot later in the season. Both teams scored massive wins on the weekend and also held their opponents scoreless. This match up will come down to the wire, and will be a great preview into finals football for 2014.

MATCH PREVIEW Like most of the fixtures at Campese today, this is another 1 v 2 match up. Tuggeranong are coming off the back off a bonus point victory over Gungahlin, while Queanbeyan had Easts forfeit against them, giving them a 20-0 bonus point victory. Tuggeranong were far too good last time winning 32-18.

This 4th grade match will be the grades match of the round as only 2 points separate these two teams at the top of the ladder. Queanbeyan have had both there byes, while Tuggeranong will not have there’s until round 14 so competition points will be vital in this fixture.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals are in desperate need of a win if they are to gain a place in the top 4. Currently sitting 5 points out, a win will put them in reach of Wests if results go their way. Uni-Norths put in an improved performance, securing a 4 try bonus point in their loss to Wests in round 10.

This match up will be one to watch with both teams fighting for those final spots in the top 4. Uni showed its class defeating Wests 48-10 to provide a little buffer between them and 5 th placed Royals. Royals will be fresh from the bye and looking to repeat their efforts they produce last time against the Owls wining 31-26.

MATCH PREVIEW This game is an important fixture for both clubs as the push for a finals spot. The Owls bonus point win over Wests has them 6 points outside the top four and a bonus point win will see them close in on 4th place Royals. Depending on result, Royals could go as high as 3rd on the ladder drop to 5th on the ladder.

With the updated table, the Owls now sit well outside the top four and will be looking to register a win against Royals. The Owls blew a lead to draw with Wests 14 in round 10 all meaning they shared the competition points. A loss to UniNorths will disrupt Royals push to the finals as there is only 5 points between 3rd and 5th.

MONARO DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION: With this weekends fixture being round 10, the competition for finals spots is heating up especially with a number of rescheduled games still yet to be played. Last weekend match of the round was an outstanding battle with RMC remaining undefeated with a 18-8 victory over Hall. Both teams are showing some encouraging form this year and are pushing hard for a spot in the finals. Goulburn were far too good for Yass thrashing the Rams 88-7. The defending champions have had a forgettable 2014 season and are nowhere near the form that sore them claim the title in 2013. This week’s match of the round is Cooma v Hall in Cooma. Cooma are always a very strong side at home while Hall will be looking to continue their promising form. Yass and ADFA will be the only other match that will battle it out this weekend as they fight to keep lock in a finals position. Both teams are not showing the form they displayed last year, but a win could very much so give them the confidence they need to get there season on a role. First Division - 1st Grade TEAM

SECOND DIVISION: Taralga have secured a bonus point 48-17 win over Bungendore to leap frog Crookwell and sit on top of the competition ladder. While both teams are on equal points, the Tigers have a far better for and against then Crookwell. Taralga’s 31 point victory saw them cross for 8 tries, with outside centre Ben Marmont scoring a hartick and winger Joe Kelly scoring a double. The matchup between Jindabyne and Boorowa was well worthy of being named the match of the round with 1 point splitting the two teams. Jindabyne held on to a 25-24 victory which keeps them in touch with the top two teams. Both Boorowa and Jindabyne scored 4 tries, but a penalty goal to the Bushpigs secured the win. For Boorowa, they still remain winless, but a win could quiet easily turn their season around. Round 8’s match of the round is the battle for top spot on the ladder with Crookwell at home to Taralga. This match will be a very different game compared to the last time these two played in which Crookwell took the competition points with a 29-0 victory. The other game taking places this weekend is Jindabyne and Bungendore in Jindabyne. Jindabyne will need to secure a win if they don’t want to fall behind the top two whereas Bungendore will be desperate to get some breathing space between then and Boorowa. Second Division TEAM

CONCUSSION FACTS__________________________________________ • A concussion is a brain injury. • All concussions are serious. • Concussions can occur without loss of consciousness. • All athletes with any symptoms following a head injury must be removed from playing or training and must not return to activity until all symptoms have cleared. • Specifically, return to play on the day of any suspected concussion is forbidden. • Recognise and remove to help prevent further injury or even death. • Concussion can be fatal. • Most concussions recover with physical and mental rest. SYMPTOMS OF CONCUSSION - WHAT YOU ARE TOLD Presence of any one or more of the following signs and symptoms may suggest a concussion: • Headache • Dizziness • Mental clouding, confusion, or feeling slowed down • Visual problems • Nausea or vomiting • Fatigue • Drowsiness/feeling like “in a fog“/difficulty concentrating • “Pressure in head” • Sensitivity to light or noise QUESTIONSTOASK-WHATQUESTIONSTOASK Failure to answer any of these questions correctly may suggest a concussion: • “What venue are we at today?” • “Which half is it now?” • “Who scored last in this game?” • “What team did you play last week/game?” • “Did your team win the last game?” Recognise and remove and if in doubt, sit them out. On field management of a suspected concussion at training or during a match Any athlete with a suspected concussion should be IMMEDIATELY REMOVED FROM PLAY, using appropriate emergency management procedures. Once safely removed from play, the injured player MUST NOT BE RETURNED TO ACTIVITY THAT DAY AND UNTIL THEY ARE ASSESSED MEDICALLY.
