John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 8 Saturday, 16 May
MATCH OF THE ROUND: Uni-Norths (4) v Royals (5) @ ANU North Oval First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Royals 22 defeated Uni-Norths 19 – Rd 3, 2015 The last time these two met, a last minute penalty goal to Royals is all that separated the two teams who were locked at 19 all. Five rounds later and these two teams met again and are only separated by 2 points on the competition ladder. If this is any to go by, this will be another close match. Royals will have their tails up after handing competition leaders Queanbeyan their first loss of the year, and have now secured back to back victories. For the second week in a row Craig McMahon was on point with his kicking which proved to be difference in the 23-22 victory. The Owls will have to be mindful of McMahon’s boot especially anything from 40 meters out. Royals have only made once change to the side that took the field last week and that is the added inclusion of Ben Johnston to fullback, which pushed Jamie Bodman onto the wing. Uni-Norths started slowly in there game against Wests in round 6 which in the end cost them not only the win, but also a bonus point. Trailing 24-7 just after half time, the Owls rallied to trail 24-21 with 6 minutes remaining, but Wests scored in the last play of the game to secure the 31-21 win. This weekend at home, Uni will have to put in an 80 minute performance if they have any chance to securing the win against a confident Royals outfit and if they want to remain in the top 4.
Wests (3) V Gungahlin (6) @ Jamison Oval First Grade: 3.15pm, Reserve Grade: 1.50pm, Colts 12.25pm Previous Result: Wests 36 defeated Gungahlin 24 – Rd 3, 2015 After holding on for victory against the Owls, an injury riddled Wests side were unable to compete with powerhouse Tuggeranong, going down 57-19. Despite the loss, Wests still remain in 3rd due to having more wins than the Owls. Competition points a vital this weekend for the Lions as only 2 points separate them, Uni & Royals. Joe Smellie returns to fly half after a hamstring injury which will add some direction around the park, but no other changes have been made from Round 7. Gungahlin have finally joined the winners circle and they did it in style holding Easts scoreless in the 48-0 victory. Second Rower Connor O’Bryne starred for the Eagles, crashing over for a double as did Jamie Kotz in the 8 tries to 0 thumping. Now the monkey is of the back expect the Eagles to start making in roads and push for a top 4 spot. Three changes have been made this weekend with Dan Mannix out which had Tyronne Anderson take on the fly half spot, Peter Houlihan coming into the front row and Luke Duffey returning after a couple of weeks off.
Tuggeranong (2) v Easts (7) @ Viking Park First Grade: 3.25pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm Previous Result: Tuggeranong 66 defeated Easts 21 – Rd 3, 2015 Tuggeranong bounced back after their loss to Queanbeyan with a clinical 57-19 win over Wests at home. Fullback Ernest Suavai was a standout with a personal tally of 17 points, but he was out done by front rower Phil Kite who was awarded the skins man of the match honours. This weekend Vikings welcome back Gareth Cloutson who returns from an extended period of time on the sideline due to injury. His inclusion boost and already impressive forward pack. James Field gets his chance at fly half this weekend with regular 10 Isaac Thompson out and Joe Powell who stepped in in at fly half last weekend not named. Easts will be disappointed they were held scoreless at home last weekend, especially against Gungahlin who are now 5 points clear of them on the ladder. The task ahead is not easy as Vikings look to secure back to back victories, while Easts want to snap their 4 game losing streak. Look for Easts to turn to Darcy Eason, Joel Brown & Geeps Pretorius who are always an attacking threat and will test Vikings backline any chance they get.

MATCH PREVIEW The last time these two teams only 7 points separated them and we can expect another close game between the two. The Owls currently sit 2nd on the ladder, and a win this weekend will put them in a favourable position nearing the halfway point of these season. Royals are in 4th but have Wests and Gungahlin just behind them who play each other this weekend. If Royals get a win they will shorten the gap between them and the top three teams.
Uni-Norths have strung back to back victories which plus the bye to put them in 3rd on the ladder thus far. In their last game, they made light work of Wests winning 57-19 thanks to a hat-trick from Damian Hill. Royals continued their unbeaten run defeating Queanbeayn 38-8. Unbelievably Sam Ross scored another hat-trick making that four for the season. Royals were far too good for Uni in their first clash, but this game is shaping up to be a lot closer than previous.

MATCH PREVIEW These two played out a 10 all draw back in round 3, so again this is expected to be another tight game. Royals haven’t had quiet the results they are after just yet going into this games winless. Uni-Norths currently sit second on the ladder due to number of wins, but have secure back to back victories before the bye in round 7. A win for the Owls could provide some breathing space between the top 4, while a win for Royals can keep they chances alive.
The Owls had a penalty kick after the siren to win back in round 3, but missed it going down by 2 points to Royals. Since then Uni-Norths have only played one other game going down to Wests. If they secure a win, they could find themselves in the top four. Royals suffered a close loss to Queanbeyan last weekend, which now has them a win behind Tuggeranong who currently lead the fourth grade ladder. Like most games between the Owls and Royals, this could be another nail bitter.

MATCH PREVIEW Tuggeranong will be please with their efforts last weekend against Wests scoring 8 tries and holding The Lions to nil. Of the 8 tries scored, it was shared between 4 players who all scored doubles. Easts had another close against Gungahlin who they previously drew with in round 2. The Eagles outscored Easts 4 tries to 2, winning the game. The last time these two met, Vikings ran riot winning 78-0.
Vikings 3rds made easy work of Wests racking up 11 tries to win 67-21. This is Tuggeranong third win in a row after losing their first match of the year. Easts on the other hand were unable to contain Gungahlin’s attack, going down 77-22. East though were able to secure a bonus point for scoring 4 tries. This weekend will be another tests for them, with Tuggeranong gaining moment and looking to continue their winning streak.

Chris Coyle – American Football To Rugby Union American Footballer Chris Coyle will turn out for the Gungahlin Eagles this weekend as he looks to further his Rugby Career. Before starting his Rugby Union crusade which has seen him travel half way across the world for an opportunity, Chris played College Football for Arizona State University as a tight end. Chris finished third on ASU’s all-time tight end receptions list with 92 career catches and has nine career touchdowns.
Chris Coyle in action for ASU
Upon his graduation from ASU, Chris went to NFL Team the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2014, before an injury saw him miss the cut. Chris’s first interest in rugby union came from ASU team and roommate Trevor Cole, who suggested they play rugby in the off season to keep them fit and to have a bit of fun before preseason for college football. Whilst waiting to see if another opportunity came in the NFL after his cut from the Texan the coach of the ASU Rugby team Gary Lane contacted Chris to see if he was interested in playing rugby and that there was a team in in Australia that was interested in training him to become a [professional] rugby player’.
Chris Coyle at Brumbies HQ
For the next 13 weeks Chris will training with the Brumbies and Academy and will also play with Gungahlin Eagles in the ACT competition. Before arriving, Chris was playing in US for the past five months as a back-rower since being cut by the Texans.
Chris’ goal is to make it as a professional rugby player, but understand that he is new to the sport and that he face a number of challenges to reach is goal. Either way, Chris is very excited of the opportunity here at the Brumbies and at Gungahlin.

MATCH PREVIEW The Lions were at the receiving end of Tuggeranong Vikings being held scoreless in the 50-0 romp. This is Wests third loss in a row, while Gungahlin were able to hold of Easts to securing their first win of the year. Only one point separates these two clubs, and despite Wests 30-10 victory in round 3, this match will be a lot closer this time around.
Wests colts still remain winless, but this time when playing Tuggeranong they went down 46-10 which is a massive improvement compared to their previous game against Vikings. Gungahlin had the bye and haven’t won since they beat Wests in round 3. If Gungahlin are to stay in contention with the top four they must secure a bonus point win. Don’t be surprised if Wests really test the Eagles this weekend and may cause an upset.

MATCH PREVIEW Only a 4 points separates these two clubs and as they both sit on 3 competition wins. Gungahlin come into this game with form having won their last two, while Wests have lost their last two games. The Eagles will be confident in their attack after racking up 77 points last weekend whereas The Lions will be out to fix their defence after conceding 67 points.
The Eagles are yet to secure a win in the season, but have only played the two games which included there loss against Wests in round 2 of their competition. A win by the Lions will see them remain in the top four, while Gungahlin need a win to kick start their season and keep them intact with the rest of the competition.

2015 WOMEN’S COMPETITION – ROUND 2 Round 1 saw 2014 runners up Royals stake their claim for the title with a massive win over Gungahlin 89-5. It was Gungahlin’s first competition match and despite the results, it was great to see the club back in the competition after an absence. The Eagles halfback Nakiya Smith was their lone try scorer while Royals’ Sarah Carter showed her dominance scoring a personal haul of 34 points which included 4 tries and 7 conversions.

Uni-Norths kick started their title defence off with a win against Tuggeranong. The Owls outscored Vikings 6 tries to 3, however goal kicking let Uni down. Jocelyne Mara and Lani Yabaki both scored doubles. This weekend Uni-Norths will host Royals in the Women’s match of the round and Grand Final replay. Kick off will be at 1.35pn and expect this game to be very fierce and filled with exceptional rugby as both teams have exciting backlines. Tuggeranong and Gungahlin will be looking to bounce back after their round 1 defeats as they take on each other at Viking Park. Vikings will be out to continue their attacking display which saw them score three tries in round 1, while the Eagles will be focusing on their defence structures.

Only the one fixture was played last weekend and that was between Hall and ADFA and it was a nail biter in both games. The Rams chasing their first win came up just short against the Bushrangers in 1st grade with Hall taking the biscuits 39-33. Yass managed to secure 2 vital bonus points, but that first win still eludes them. Mark Kennedy was a standout for Yass scoring a hat-trick, while Hall’s Fullback helped his side with a double. In 2nd Grade, Yass continued their rise up the ladder with a hard fought 18-12 win. Xavier Copeland got the Rams across the line scoring a double. The loss for Hall see’s them stuck in the lower half the table thus far, but with plenty of games remaining, expect the 2014 Premier to make a charge home.
It’s the last round of the split competition before the zones come together and play off over 5 rounds. The top four thus far have created a minor gap between the middle of the table, but a loss to any of the top four and a win to those in middle will certainly make the competition very tight and interesting. Last weekend Jindabyne continued their impressive form securing another 45-17 bonus point win over Crookwell. Bungendore have been going about their business and remain undefeated like the Bushpigs after defeating Boorowa 37-15. The two heavy weights clash in this weekend’s match of the round and what a day it will be with Bungendore celebrating their 10 year anniversary. On Saturday they will be have a Mudchooks Legends v Jindabyne legends games as the curtain raiser to the main game with a celebration ball after the main game.
This weekend again there is only the one fixture and it a replay of last year’s 1st Grade Grand Final. Cooma will make the trip to Goulburn as the look to continue their promising start. The Red Devils will have to be on their game if they are to test The Dirty Reds at Poidevin Oval. In 2nd grade Goulburn have has the perfect start securing the maximum amount of points available. Like 1st Grade, Cooma will have to step it up another level in they want to get the win and create a gap between the top four and bottom two. ADFA and Hall will be playing their round 5 fixtures on Tuesday 19th May at ADFA, while Yass have the bye due to their rescheduled game against RMC. Second Grade: TEAM – 2nd Goulburn
Boorowa will travel to Taralga as both teams look to get their first win of the season. Bonus points are all that separate the two teams at present. In South Coast only the one game will take place with Bay Red forfeiting their match against Milton. Despite only the one match, it is a classic match between Batemans Bay and Broulee at Hanging Rock. This game has always been a very physical and exciting match up with the clubs looking to securing bragging rights. Only 1 points separates these two teams on the ladder so a win is vital. The club started when a young Peter Payten and a few others met at the Royal hotel Bungendore and discussed the lack of a rugby club in Bungendore. After a few discussions they decided to form a rugby club and the “MUDCHOOKS were born. A grand final appearance in the first season set the club up for the seasons to come contesting 5 of the next 6 grand finals finally breaking through to win the elusive premiership going undefeated in 2010 and backing it up by winning the grand final in 2011 . In 2007 the MUDCHOOKS were invited to host the SILVER FOXES team to raise money for charity. The event drew a crowd in excess of 2500 people. The event resulted in thousands of dollars raised for charities both local and across Australia. Courtesy of this game the MUDCHOOKS where awarded with the community event of the year at the Bungendore Australia day awards in 2008. For a club with such a short history the MUDCHOOKS have been quite successful on the field with multiple Monaro and Brumbies provincial representatives and competition player of the year award winners.
