John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 9 Saturday, 14th June 2014 After the competition bye and with the Super Rugby bye period underway there will 12 contracted Brumbies players taking the field in club rugby this weekend. All clubs playing this weekend will have a Brumby featuring in their side and there will be a number of them turning out for their clubs for the first time this year.
Match of the Round:
Uni-Norths (6th) v Queanbeyan (3rd) – ANU North Oval, Turner First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm
If this match of the round is anything like the last time these two clubs played, it will be one very exciting and hard fought battle. In round 4 a last minute field goal to Owls Fly Half Tom Gilmore sealed the win for the Owls after Queanbeyan fought back from 16-0 down to take the lead in the final stages of the match. Before the bye Uni-Norths suffered a disappoint loss to Gungahlin 26-10 in what was a must win match for the Owls. st Three 1 half tries to the Eagles proved to be the difference as the second half was end to end rugby with a lot of desperate defensive efforts from both clubs being the highlight. The Owls welcome Michael Dowsett st and Tom McVerry into the side as well at Stee Tiko who will be making his 1 Grade debut. Queanbeyan have had the last two weeks off after their round 7 defeat to Wests and will be refreshed and ready to tackle the back end of the season. The Whites will be boosted by the inclusion of front rower Les Makin who will provide some much need fire power up front. Also the Whites will see the return of not only Leon Power, but local Robbie Coleman as well. Already a dangerous side without Robbie, his inclusion will spark his side as they look to push further up the competition ladder. Tuggeranong (1st) v Royals (5th) – Viking Park, Erindale First Grade: 3.25pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm
Tuggeranong will be celebrating old boys day this weekend as the look to continue their winning ways again last year’s runners up. Vikings sit 13 points clear on top of the ladder and showed there dominance with the 92-0 thrashing over Easts in round 8. Last year’s top try scoring Tim Cree had a field day scoring 6 tries; while Beau Mokotupu and Jerome Niumata enjoyed hatricks in the 14 try romping. Tuggeranong will see contracted player Jarrad Butler turn out for the club for the first time. Royals has felt the ups and downs of Rugby having gone down to Wests 30-19 last weekend in there Round 8 fixture, only to turn that around 4 days later and beat Wests 25-10 in there round 1 rescheduled match. nd th That win now has Royals on 23 points meaning there is two points difference between 2 and 5 at present. Against Vikings, Royals will have a number of big name players out through injuries but Coach Russ Ingram is excited for the players like Dean Paragalli and Connor McGoverne stepping into those positions and the opportunity they get taking on the top team in the competition. It was back to the drawing board for Easts over the competition bye as Easts look to turn their season around after a demoralising 92-0 defeat at the hands of Tuggeranong. Despite the results, Easts continued to fight it out for the full 80 minutes. This weekend we can expect Easts to come out a different team with the inclusion of a number of Brumbies players as well as playing in front of their home fans. Wests will be disappointed they were unable to secure two consecutive wins against Royals last week which nd would have see Wests jump to 2 on the competition table and given them a buffer between Royals, Queanbeyan and Gungahlin. All 4 clubs are currently fighting it out for position in the top four making competition points ever so valuable. Wests have lost Gareth Bautz and Michael Smith through injury, but will see Jack Whetton and Jesse Mogg start this weekend. The last time these two teams played: Round 4, 2014 (Wests 30 def Easts 7)

MATCH FACT This weekend the Vikings host their Old Boys day, 41 years after we entered the competition and 40 years th since our first grand final appearance back in 1974, going down to Goulburn. 2014 sees the 20 anniversary of our first John I Dent premiership. Under the direction of coach Chris Hickey and captaincy of ex-Springbok st Jannie Breedt the 1 Grade team won its way through to our second grand final in the top grade. With five players from the 1991 runners-up team in the line-up combined with some added experience and quality st youth, the 1994 1 grade team were a formidable team. With a new strip to celebrate 21 years and under the catchcry of “whatever it takes” the Vikings were victorious to win the Club’s first John I Dent Cup, 19-14 over Royals. In 1994 the Club were also successful winning premierships in 2nds and 5ths. st

This weekend also celebrates 25 years since our first ever wins over Royals with both 1 & 2 grade th defeating the ol’ foe on the 17 June 1989 at a rain drenched Wanniassa Oval (now Viking Park), as well as our first overseas tour. We also celebrate our grand final wins in 1999 (15 years ago in 1sts, Colts and 3rds), 2004 (10 years ago in 1sts, 2nds and 4ths) and 2009 (5 years ago in 1sts, Colts, 3rds and 4ths). st
1 Grade will be debuting the Club’s new “Old Boys” blood & bandages strip – a modern take on the strip worn st st by 1 Grade in the Club’s first 1 Grade premiership in 1994 which will serve as a throwback for Hagars Day this year and into the future.

MATCH PREVIEW Tuggeranong are sitting 4 points clear at the top and a win this weekend will almost certainly cement there spot in the finals this year. Against Easts Vikings clocked up and 77 point victory which includes a 4 try haul by colts player Jack Reid who had already scored 4 tires early in Colts. Royals scored an impressive and hard fought 27-22 victory over Wests only to have the result reversed in there round 1 make up match 14-8 to Wests.
Both Tuggeranong and Royals are coming off huge round 8 victories and will be confident in the attack. Tuggeranong player Jack Reid had a field day scoring 36 points which included 4 tries against Easts while Royals player Bryce Gibson scored 32 points against Wests, an outstanding effort by both players. The key for both teams in this match up with their defensive efforts in stopping the oppositions attack.

MATCH PREVIEW The Owls still remain winless but continue to improve and will look to make amends of the last time they took on Queanbeyan which resulted in a 76-5 flogging. Queanbeyan have enjoyed a two week break after beating Wests easily in round 7 fixture and will be ready to play their remaining 6 games of the regular season.

MATCH PREVIEW Uni-Norths after a promising start have slipped back in the race for the top 4, but a win this weekend will see them draw the gap closer. Queanbeyan 3rds suffered their first loss last Thursday night to Tuggeranong which has seen the Whites drop to third on the ladder. Expect a tight tussle between the two like they did in round 4.
Queanbeyan’s 4th grade remains undefeated and has all but secured a spot in the finals for 2014. What they need to do is make sure they don’t get to complacent and continue this hot form. The Owls on the other hand will be looking to building from there improved performances from previous weeks and really test Queanbeyan.

MONARO DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION: Round 7 was a high scoring affair for all the winning teams. All three winning clubs in 21st grade scored over 40 points given them bonus point victories. In the match of the round RMC continued their dominance over ADFA this season with at 47-10 victory Number 8 H. Brown scored a hatrick in an impressive attacking display. RMC second grade ran riot over ADFA with a 77-5 victory.
SECOND DIVISION: In round 5 there was of the upsets of the season with Taralga handing Jindabyne its first defeat in over 2 years. Taralga and Jindabyne have had some great matches over the last 2 years including the 2012 Grand Final. The tigers were just far too good for the Bushpigs outscoring them comfortably 36-10. The result see’s Jindabyne go from 1st to 3rd and Taralga equal 1st.
Goulburn still remain undefeated in both grades with a 43-13 victory is 1st grade and a tough 5-0 in 2nd grade against Hall. Dom Falk for Goulburn starred in 1st grade with an 18 point haul.
Taralga at one stage were down to 13 men and managed to score 2 tries to prevent any possible comeback by Jindabyne. Half Back Tom Croker had a blinder for Taralga scoring 16 points include 1 try, 4 conversions and a penalty goal.
Cooma have found some form after a slow start to the season to win at home against Yass 477.The 6 try effort see’s Cooma jump from last on the table to 4th. However the battle between all clubs for a final spot is very close as they start the back end of the season.
Crookwell defeated Boorowa 25-5 but were unable to secure a bonus point which would have had the dogs in outright 1st place. Crookwell currently have a better points differential is which is what has put them in 1st place above Taralga.
Round 8’s match of the round is Cooma v Goulburn at Cooma. Cooma are a very strong team at home and will be looking to continue their rise up the table. Hall will be at home to ADFA and a loss to either team could see them slip down the ladder. RMC and Yass is also another important match up this weekend with competition points a must for both.
Round 6 match of the round will be Crookwell v Jindabyne. Jindabyne will be looking to bounce back and secure a much needed win while Crookwell will want to further their stamp there dominance on the competition.

BRUMBIES PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT Congratulations to the Southern Inland Rams Representative Side who took out the 2014 Brumbies Provincial Tournament in Jindabyne over the June Long Weekend at John Connors Oval. The tournament was between Monaro, Southern Inland and South Coast and some exceptional rugby was played in cold conditions. South Australia also participated in the tournament against Southern Inland and Monaro, however those matches were not officially included as part of the tournament. 2014 Women’s Competition Round 5 The only match that took place before the June long weekend break was Royals v Queanbeyan at Royals. Royals have continued their hot start to the season with a 36-5 victory over the defending champs. Centre Sarah Riordan starred for Royals scoring a hatrick in their 6 try romp.
This weekend QBN will travel to Jindabyne and both teams will look to continue their winning ways. Royals will take on ADFA at Viking Park as Royals men’s team take on Tuggeranong. Women’s Divisions

2015 Easts Rugby Canberra Head Coach Position Easts Rugby Canberra is currently seeking a Head Coach for the 2015 season. Primary roles and responsibilities:
to lead the coaching team responsible for the senior squad;
plan the coaching programme for the season;
plan, prepare and deliver individual coaching sessions for the Club’s senior squad;
ensure that all sessions are designed to develop the skills and understanding of the players in the squad;
evaluate all coaching sessions and games with the coaching team and players; and
provide feedback to coaches, players and, where appropriate, committee members.
By negotiation, additional responsibilities will include:
undertaking player recruitment in accordance with an agreed budget;
engaging with local community to promote Easts Rugby to the u20 age group; and
undertaking player management activities in coordination with the Easts Board of Management.
Applications, which should outline relevant experience and credentials for the position, will close on Friday 27 June 2014 and should be addressed to club@eastsrugbycanberra.com.au. It is the club’s intention to have the position filled by mid August 2014. The club can offer salary (commensurate on experience), and assistance in job seeking for those applicants wishing to relocate to Canberra. INTERNATIONAL RUGBY BOARD Putting Players First ‘Concussion Guidance for the General Public’
CONCUSSION FACTS__________________________________________ • A concussion is a brain injury. • All concussions are serious. • Concussions can occur without loss of consciousness. • All athletes with any symptoms following a head injury must be removed from playing or training and must not return to activity until all symptoms have cleared. • Specifically, return to play on the day of any suspected concussion is forbidden. • Recognise and remove to help prevent further injury or even death. • Concussion can be fatal. • Most concussions recover with physical and mental rest. SYMPTOMS OF CONCUSSION - WHAT YOU ARE TOLD Presence of any one or more of the following signs and symptoms may suggest a concussion: • Headache • Dizziness • Mental clouding, confusion, or feeling slowed down • Visual problems • Nausea or vomiting • Fatigue • Drowsiness/feeling like “in a fog“/difficulty concentrating • “Pressure in head” • Sensitivity to light or noise QUESTIONSTOASK-WHATQUESTIONSTOASK Failure to answer any of these questions correctly may suggest a concussion: • “What venue are we at today?” • “Which half is it now?” • “Who scored last in this game?” • “What team did you play last week/game?” • “Did your team win the last game?” Recognise and remove and if in doubt, sit them out. On field management of a suspected concussion at training or during a match Any athlete with a suspected concussion should be IMMEDIATELY REMOVED FROM PLAY, using appropriate emergency management procedures. Once safely removed from play, the injured player MUST NOT BE RETURNED TO ACTIVITY THAT DAY AND UNTIL THEY ARE ASSESSED MEDICALLY. If a neck injury is suspected, the player should only be removed by emergency healthcare professionals with appropriate spinal care training. Team mates, coaches, match officials, team managers, administrators or parents who suspect a player may have concussion MUST do their best to ensure that the player is removed from the field of play in a safe manner.
