John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 13 Saturday 20th June

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Wests (3) v Uni-Norths (5) @ Jamison Oval First Grade: 3:15pm, Reserve Grade: 1:50pm, Colts: 12:25pm Previous Result: Wests 31 defeated Uni-Norths 21, Rd 6 2015 The Lions have strung 4 wins on the trot now after their 72-7 win over Easts last weekend. Wests ran in 12 tries which include 4 doubles to Gareth Bautz, Michael Smith, Vatu Qalova & Ratu Tagive. They currently sit 7 points clear of Royals in 3rd place on the ladder and a win this weekend will put pressure on Royals who would love nothing more than to finish in 3rd place. Wests will be celebrating their Ladies Day this weekend and have made a number of changes in the backline with Andrew Parsons & Joe Smellie returning which see’s Ratu Tagive move from fullback to outside centre. The Owls came up just short against Queanbeyan in a see-sawing affair at North Oval. The Owls led 8-5 at half time after having all the ball in the first half before Queanbeyan jumped out to a 22-8 lead on the back of some much needed possession. However the momentum turned when Uni-Norths scored a 90metre intercept try which then led to another try in the last minute of play to have the score at 22-20. Unfortunately the kick from out wide struck the post to prevent the game ending in a draw. Only one change has been made this weekend with Phil Ferreria coming into the backline for injured Alec Jones. The last time these two played, Uni-Norths drew within 3 points late in the second half before Wests score on full time to prevent any chance of a come from behind victory and an important bonus point.

Gungahlin (6) v Royals (4) @ Gungahlin Enclosed Oval First Grade: 3:15pm, Reserve Grade: 1:50pm, Colts: 12:25pm Previous Result: Royals 40 Defeated Gungahlin 20 Rd 6 2015 Gungahlin are hitting their straps and are putting improved performances on the park after a slow start to 2015. Before the bye, the Eagles pushed Vikings for 60 minutes with the scores very tight, before Vikings superiority got the better of Gungahlin. This weekend will see another halves combination with Anthony Dawes and Sean Connochie named to take on Pedro Rolando and Craig McMahon. Apart from that, the only other change to Gungahlin is James Lovell returning to his familiar position of fullback after a stint at fly half. Playing at home, the Eagles will lift for this game and will be out to hand Royals there second loss in a row. Royals will be out to bounce back after they were handing their 5th defeat for the year. Despite the score line displaying a 31-15 victory to Tuggeranong, the game was very fast paced and very physical. Royals will looking to continue that style play into Gungahlin, however with the result reversed to a victory for Royals. Ed Hallisey gets another crack in first grade with a reshuffled back line while Dean Paragalli will play blindside flanker with Tyson Tamihere moving into the second row.

Easts (7) v Queanbeyan (2) @ Griffith Oval First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, 3rd Grade: 12:15pm Previous Result: Queanbeyan 60 Defeated Easts 8 Rd 6 2015 Easts were unable to prevent Wests attack letting in 12 tries to suffer one of their worst defeats of the year. Despite the result standouts for Easts were Tom Pilkinton, George Cross, Simon Webber and Jacob Angelatos at fullback. This weekend at home for second last time, the Beastie would love nothing more to celebrate a win and home and to knock off Queanbeyan. Easts have named an unchanged side to last weekend. Queanbeyan almost blew a 12 point lead against the Owls in a match that came down to the wire. Queanbeyan had no possession in the first half, but managed to score right on half time, which then resulted in three more quick tries earlier in the second half to give them a 22-8 lead. However an intercept to Uni-norths changed the momentum, but the Whites managed to hold on. Sokai Tai and Keith Morgan were Queanbeyan best, but a number of changes have been made for this weekend’s clash with Jake Holland, Car Elliot, Nero Nadruku coming into the forward pack, while Zac Tarrant and Doug Lancaster join the back line. Tuggeranong have the bye this weekend so a bonus point victory is a must for Queanbeyan if they are to stay in touch with Vikings at the top.

MATCH PREVIEW The last time these two played, Queanbeyan won 140 which for Easts showed they could mix it with the best and were unlucky not to come away with some competition points. This time around, Queanbeyan are coming off their first loss of the year and like all team suffering their first loss, they will look to bounce back. Easts suffered a heavy loss to Wests, going down 64-7 with P Ethell scoring Easts sole try.

Easts thirds had last weekend off after their June long weekend loss to Royals 26-10. That game was important to both sides as both looked to secure their first win, and unfortunately for Easties they were unable to match it with the 2014 Grand Finalists. The Whites produce a dominant performance against UniNorths and a top 4 clash. Queanbeyan ran out winners 31-0.

MATCH PREVIEW Only 6 points separate these two teams and Gungahlin need to get a win under their belt if they stay in contention with the top 4. The same goes for Royals who sit 4 points outside the top for behind Wests. Royals who upset Tuggeranong in their previous encounter were unable to repeat that effort going down 45-7. The last time these two met, Royals held off the Eagles 19-17. This could be another close match which so much on the line.

Gungahlin colts have had an extended period off due club bye and unfortunately forfeiting there round 11 game. The Eagles now sit in 5th spot after Queanbeyan’s victory, and need to pull off a memorable win against Royals if they want to get back into the top 4. Royals suffered only their second loss of the season on the weekend to Tuggeranong and will be looking to bounce back accordingly.

MATCH PREVIEW Gungahlin currently sit outside the top 4 on for & against and with Uni & Wests playing each other, this is a big game for the Eagles to win and move into the top 4. Royals on the other hand will be looking to string together a couple of wins and finish the back end of the season off on a high after having only secure the one win thus far. When these two last played Gungahlin came away with the competition points wining 19-12.

This game is the opposite to that of 3rd grade, with it being Royals who could move significantly up the ladder if they get a win against the Eagles. Royals sitting in fourth could potentially move up to 2nd place with a bonus point win. Gungahlin are yet to win a game in 4th grade, but are stringing together some nice form and a win is not far away. Royals were comfortable winners in their last encounter scoring a bonus point victory.

MATCH PREVIEW This second grade match up with be the match of the round as both teams sit 3rd and 4th on the ladder. Both are equal on competition wins but 4 points separates them on the ladder. Wests ran in 10 tries in their 64-7 win over Easts, whereas Uni-Norths handed Queanbeyan their first loss of the year winning 22-7 at ANU North oval. Only 7 points separated these two in their round 6 encounter and after last weekend’s results, this will again be another tight one.

The last time these two teams met, Uni-Norths were far too good holding Wests scoreless in very cold conditions under lights. Wests are yet to play a game since that encounter so they will be refreshed and ready to go. The Owls on the other hand, suffered a disappointing 3 point loss at the hands of an enthusiastic Queanbeyan side 25-22. The loss has made it very tight at the top of the colts ladder between Uni, Royals and Tuggeranong.

MATCH PREVIEW Like 1st and 2nd grade, this fixture will be the match of the round in 3rd grade. Uni-Norths currently sit 3 points clear of Wests in 3rd, while Wests are ahead of Gungahlin in 4th on points for and against. The Owls preformed below par and were outclassed by Queanbeyan going down 31-0. Wests last game, they won with a bonus point over Easts. At present the fight for a top 4 spot in 3rd grade is very open and each week, teams can go as high as second or be outside the top 4 altogether.

Wests 4th grade have had some considerable time of due to scheduling but will now be looking consolidate the spot in the top 4 and over take Queanbeyan for 2nd place. The Owls suffered heartbreaking 1 point loss to Queanbeyan last weekend, going down 29-28. Uni-Norths did manage to secure 2 bonus points, which still puts them in range for a top 4 finish. The last time these two clubs played, Wests showed there class winning by 33 points.

Goulburn 2nd grade racked up a cricket score against Cooma, wining 78-0 with fullback Brandon Courts scoring a personal tally of 26 points.

They take on Crookwell at home this weekend which will be a tough challenge for them.

RMC’s have found themselves in the top 4 with a 22-19 win over Yass. This match was played for double competition points due to rescheduling restrictions. The win has seen Yass drop out of the top 4, but only 2 points separate them and RMC. In their 2nd grade game the Rams were too good scoring a bonus point 24-7 win. Fly Half E Ngatai scored a hatrick to put the result beyond doubt. It is currently a two team race in 2nd grade between Yass and Goulburn who sit 12 plus point a head of nearest rival Hall. In the final game of the round Hall were on their game winning 35-19 to notch up their 6th victory of the season. Taralga have started to get their season back on track and have now won four in a row to now sit in the top 4 on the ladder, however but due to the format of competition are currently missing out on a wild card spot. The Tigers defeated Braidwood 36-17 thanks to four tries to Ben Seaman. Only 5 competition points separate 2nd place and 6ht place on the ladder, which is generating an interesting and exciting back end to the competition. This weekend’s match of the round Broulee and Bungendore, with the Mudchooks making the trip to Broulee. This game kicks off at 3pm. Jindabyne will be holding there charity day and will host Braidwood. All money raised will go toward a children’s Park with the day kicking off at 1.30pm. There will be plenty of Children’s activities and the opportunity for kids to paint a tile that will be put on the Wall of the toilet block by the park. TEAM Jindabyne* Milton*

Crookwell’s trip to the Bay resulted in a bonus point 43-19 victory which has them like Boorowa having won 3 in a row. This weekend a win against Milton will put them in a great position as we near the back end of the competition. The Boars have now lost their last 5 in a row which is disappointing for them after last season South Coast Premiers. They take on Taralga in a must win game for their season.

2015 WOMEN’S COMPETITION ROUND 6 Tuggeranong have started to hit their straps having now won three games in a row. Last weekend’s game, lived up to all the hype with the Viqueens spoiling Louise ‘Cookie’ Burrows 200th game for Royals with a 21-12 victory. Despite the result, ‘Cookie’ was the best on ground for Royals, constantly working to get her team on the front foot. Taylor Stanford was a stand out for Tuggeranong, scoring a try and converting all three tries.

Currently the ladder has the Owls leading the competition thanks to having the bye, but with Tuggeranong having the bye this weekend, they will get an automatic 4 points. The Owls will play ADFA/RMC this weekend at Portsea Oval, but won’t be for competition points. This will give Uni some rugby before next weekend competition bye because of Women’s 15’s Nationals in Sydney. In the only competition match this weekend, Royals will take on Gungahlin at Nicholls oval at 1pm. Last time these two played Royals won 89-5.
