John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 14 Saturday, 27 June

MATCH OF THE ROUND: Royals (4) v Wests (3) @ Phillip Oval First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Wests 27 defeated Royals 20 – Rd9, 2015 Royals & Wests have already played each other twice this year with Wests having won both games by no more than 10 points. Wests have now won 4 on the trot, while Royals have won 2 of their last 3. If Royals are to overtake Wests on the ladder, they will need to win with a bonus point this weekend and hope Wests do not secure any more competition points coming into the final 3 rounds. Both clubs are coming off bonus point victories in round 13, so expect this match up to feature plenty of attacking rugby. Wests were able to claw their way back into the game have been down 20-13 against the Owls last weekend at half time. With 10 minutes remaining the Lions took the lead through the boot of Joe Smellie to lead 23-20, before two converted tries after taking the lead, blew the score out and gave Wests a crucial bonus point. Dave McKern was a standout and was awarded the skins man of the match, while Rob Buaserua continue his try scoring, grabbing a double. Royals against Gungahlin started off with a bang, securing a four try bonus point before half time, but the late tries to the Eagles saw the score finish at 27-19. Royals have started to find their rhythm after a slow start to the season, and are looking sharp in attack especially with new comer Brent Hamlin and Pedro Rolando striking up a new halves combination. This weekend Jacob Sciberass will be making his 1st grade debut for Royals.

Queanbeyan (2) v Gungahlin (6) @ Campese Oval First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Queanbeyan 31 defeated Gungahlin 14 – Rd 9, 2015 Queanbeyan have continued their impressive form with a 53-5 victory of Easts. Queanbeyan had a number of key players still out with injuries, but are returning this weekend. With four matches remaining for Queanbeyan they only sit four points behind Tuggeranong so they can’t afford to have any slip up if they are to prevent Vikings from claiming the minor premiership. Queanbeyan have named a near full strength forward pack, which after starting strong, have had injuries to key players which would have disrupted combinations. Gungahlin can blame a slow start to their loss to Royals. Fresh from the bye, the Eagles would have looking at this game a great opportunity to get another win, leap frog Uni-Norths on the ladder. This weekend, is a tough task for the Eagles as they travel to Campese for the second time this year. They will be without regular inside centre who is out, but his replacement will be James Dargaville who will be featuring in the Eagles colours again.

Tuggeranong (1) v Uni-Norths (5) @ Viking Park First Grade: 2.45pm, Reserve Grade: 1.20pm Colts 11.55am Previous Result: Tuggeranong 35 defeated Uni-Norths 12 – rd 19 2015 Vikings have had their final bye of the season and will now be focused on continuing to build moment as they enter back end of the season before the finals. The last time these two clashed, Tuggeranong shot out to a very quick 21-0 lead before the game when back fourth with a couple of tries until Vikings prevailed winning 35-12. In Tuggeranong’s last game they took on Royals which they were able to secure an important bonus point victory. Currently both Vikings and Queanbeyan sit equal on bonus points with only one win separating them. Uni-Norths continued on from their rejuvenated form which saw them come within a whisker of Queanbeyan, jumping out to a 20-13 lead against finals bound Wests. However the Owls were unable to score any second half points which proved to be their down fall as Wests score 24 unanswered points. Despite the score line, the game was still in reach with the lions scoring with 5 minutes to lead 30-20 before a try after the siren put the result beyond doubt. Uni-Norths have named an unchained side and will be out to finish their season off with a high and look to secure their first win at home for the season against Tuggeranong.

MATCH PREVIEW Uni-Norths were unable to back up their impressive performance against Queanbeyan and suffered a disappointing 28 point loss to Wests. That loss has seen Wests over take them and now they sit 4th on the ladder with Royals hot on their tale. Tuggeranong has the bye last weekend. But before that made light work of Royals winning 45-7. The last time these two played Tuggeranong handed Uni one of their worst defeats of the season. With positions on the ladder up for grabs, this match will have a different score line to last time.

The Owls turned around their 3 point loss to Queanbeyan, to hand Wests a 50-15 loss. Uni-Norths scores 8 tries including a double to Angus Whittle. Tuggeranong will be confident after handing ladder leaders Royals their second defeat of the year 23-7. At present only 4 points sperates Royals, Uni & Vikings on the ladder, so this is a big game in terms of final positioning. Last time these two played Uni came from behind to win 37-24. Again this will be another tight match.

MATCH PREVIEW Last round saw the Owls lose their place as third on the ladder, going down to Wests 45-15. Now with 4 games remain for them, they need to secure as many wins and competition points as possible otherwise they may miss out on the finals with it being so tight. Tuggeranong in their last game defeated Gungahlin 40-12 and like 4th grade sit atop of the ladder unchallenged. Only 5 points separated these two in their last encounter and a tight affair could be on the cards again.

Uni-Norths suffered their worst defeat of the year to an impressive Wests 4th grade team, going down 830. The Owls sit 9 points outside the top 4 & if results go their way, they could still make the top 4, if they win their remaining games with bonus points. Tuggeranong on the other hand sit comfortably atop of the ladder but haven’t played since the 30th may due to forfeits and byes. This could be a good opportunity for the Owls to secure an upset win.

MATCH PREVIEW Queanbeyan have bounced back accordingly after their first loss of the year with a 98-0 thumping of Easts. Riley Ahern had a personal tally of 36 points include 4 tries and 8 goals, while Angus Balmaks scored 4 tires off the bench. Gungahlin weren’t as lucky, going down 36-19 to Royals at home. Gungahlin’s chances of making the top 4 are very slim after that loss. The last time these two played Queanbeyan scored a bonus point 38-7 victory.

Queanbeyan had the week off after their memorable win against Uni-Norths in round 12. That win propelled the Whites into the top 4 and now sit 4 points clear of Gungahlin. Gungahlin displayed an improved performance against Royals, but still went down 19-0. This clash has major baring on the final position in the top 4, as the top 3 are already secured. If Gungahlin win both clubs could be on equal competition points. Back in round 9, the Eagles won in a low scoring affair 16-5 against Queanbeyan.

MATCH PREVIEW Queanbeyan 3rd didn’t play last weekend against Easts & currently that outcome of the game is being determined. Therefore Queanbeyan and Easts have not had any changes to their competition points, or for and against. Gungahlin on the other hand after their win against Royals have jumped to 33 points creating a great finish to the back end of the season in 3rd grade for the final placings. A win by either team could cement their spot in either the top 2 or top 4. Gungahlin won a nail biter in the last encounter 33-26.

The Whites 4th grade are in a battle for a second spot on the ladder between Royals & Wests, and a win in this game against Gungahlin will enhance the chances of securing a major semi-final spot. Queanbeyan last played against Uni-Norths winning by 1 point. Gungahlin are yet to win a game, and went agonisingly close drawing with Royals 5 all. That result will give them confidence as they look to test Queanbeyan at Queanbeyan.

Royals secured an important bonus point victory against Gungahlin which now has them three points outside the top 4. They take on an inform Wests outfit who have now 4 in a row after beating the Owls comfortably. Only 4 points separates these two teams and if Royals win, it will generate another log jam is this year’s clubs rugby competition. Last time these two played Wests won by 1 point.

Royals colts re-joined the winners circle with a hard fought 19-0 win. The victory still has them at the top, but UniNorths and Tuggeranong are only a win behind. This week they take on Wests who are out to get their first win and score some points. The last time these two played Royals won with a bonus point 54-12.

Congratulations on 100 games Tanks This Saturday Royals halfback and 2nd Grade Captain, Nick Tankey is playing his 100th club game for Royals. Nick commenced playing for Royals in 2011 as a Colt out of Marist College. As a schoolboy he was also part of the ACT Schoolboys team. He’s played a high proportion of 1st Grade matches and often comes on off the bench late in games when his speed and agility can cause real problems for a tiring team. He has a bullet pass and has been an important part of the clubs success both on and off the field since commencing his senior football at Royals. Congratulations Tanks on a fantastic milestone from everyone at the club.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals 3rds were unable to contain Gungahlin going down 36-10 at Gungahlin enclosed. Royals take on a red hot Wests team who have won 3 in a row, after making light work of Uni-norths. Wests sit tied with Gungahlin and with both teams still having a bye up their sleeve, this game is a must win.

This is a big game in 4th grade in regards to positions on the ladder. Four points separate the two but Wests are coming of a huge win and will be very confident. Royals though had a draw with Gungahlin. While it gave Royals 2 competition points, an extra 2 competition for the win would have had Royals in 3rd place on number of wins.

ARU CONCUSSION GUIDANCE (Rugby Public) The purpose of this document is to provide guidance on concussion to those involved in rugby union in Australia. It incorporates the recent changes to the IRB document entitled “IRB Concussion Guidance for the General Public” which was published on the IRB website on 22 May 2014. This summary is prepared specifically for the rugby public and is not a medical document. Players, parents, coaches and officials need to act in the best interest of player safety and welfare by taking responsibility for the recognition, removal and referral of players to a medical doctor and then ensuring concussion is appropriately managed as per these guidelines.  RECOGNISE and REMOVE -

-

Any player with a suspected or recognised concussion must be removed from the rugby field immediately. The player must not take further part in any rugby training or games (including other sports) on this day.

Under no circumstances in domestic rugby competitions and/or matches in Australia shall a Pitch Side Concussion Assessment (PSCA) protocol be implemented.

 REFER - Any player suspected or recognised with concussion must see a medical doctor as soon as possible.  REST - Players diagnosed with concussion must rest completely until all signs and symptoms of concussion have disappeared. ARU Concussion Guidance (Rugby Public) 2014 Page 6 / 6

 RECOVER - The concussed player must first recover from all concussion signs and symptoms at rest and return to activities of normal daily living before starting exercise.  RETURN - Follow the graduated return to play (GRTP) protocol o Start light exercise (Stage 2) when given clearance by a medical doctor. o Progress through the GRTP without any symptoms or signs recurring. o Start contact training (Stage 5) after receiving a medical certificate from a medical doctor. o This should be in accordance with the IRB guidance recommendation around return to contact training i.e. players 18 years and under diagnosed with concussion cannot return to contact training or playing for at least 2 weeks (14 days) after all concussion signs and symptoms have disappeared. o Return to playing rugby only when you have followed the IRB guidance recommendation around contact training AND fully recovered from concussion (no concussion signs or symptoms at rest, in your normal daily activities, during exercise and contact training). FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:

SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION

This weekend there is only one fixture taking place and that is between Cooma and Hall in Cooma. The other fixtures have been reschedule. The last time these two played, the bushrangers were far too go racking up a half century in both grades winning 5012 in 1st grade and 59-5 in second grade. Cooma have lost 5 in a row as of late, but thanks to earlier wins in the season, they sit 3rd on the ladder in 1st grade. 2nd Grade for them though, currently sit last on the ladder, however a win this weekend could see them jump into the top 4.

The Monaro clubs have continue their dominance over the south coast clubs, with all four clubs playing securing competition points. Jindabyne celebrated there charity outclassing Braidwood with a 76-0 victory. That victory has The Bushpigs 6 points clear as they remain undefeated after 8 games. This weekend they travel to Milton to take on the leaders of the South Coast. Milton are a different team at home, and it will be interesting to see the result of this fixture.

Last weekend, Goulburn were in attack mode, scoring 74 points against Yass, whilst holding them scoreless. While in the 2nd grade game, unfortunately Yass had to forfeit at late notice due to a large number of player availability.

Crookwell travelled to Milton and also came away with a bonus point victory which has them just in front of Taralga for the wildcard position. Round 10 has the Dogs taking on Broulee at home. Broulee suffered a poor loss to Bungendore 52-7 at home, but will have a chance to bounce back in the final round of the mixed competition.

In the other game in round 10, ADFA were also playing with attacking flair, outscoring Cooma 64-12 in 1st grade, whereas 2nd grade was a little more respectable, as ADFA completed the double winning 37-17. Second Grade: TEAM – 2 Goulburn Yass

Taralga will have the week off, but that was well earned after beating Batemans Bay 73-22. The Boars did manage to secure a 4 try bonus point. For the Boars they will travel to Bungendore. Boorowa had last weekend off and will travel to Braidwood. A win this weekend for Boorowa will make it an interest last 5 rounds for the Monaro side of the competition as they are all fighting it out for the wild car places in the top half of the finals.

1972 ACT REPRESENTATIVE SIDE SECURES HISTORICAL VICTORY OVER QUEENSLAND AT BALLYMORE It remains one of the greatest victories in ACT Rugby history when ACT defeated Queensland at Ballymore on Sunday 2nd July 1972. Nineteen players from the ACT carved themselves a place of history in Australian rugby on that day, handing the highly fancied Queensland side full of Wallabies a 17-13 loss on home soil. Before the game, the emphasis laid down by Coach Mike Barbara was ‘tackle’ which is exactly what the side did, out tackling their opponents, which as a result also led to ACT pouring on three tries on the back of their hard defensive work. Lead by Captain Don Muirhead, the ACT side went head to head against the opposition in both the forwards and the backs. The forwards were able to constantly disrupt test second rower and Queensland captain Stuart Gregory in the lineouts. Breakaway Paddy Ryan was standout scoring a double, while late inclusion Damian Power also crossed for a try out wide, get one back on Queensland and Test fly Jeff Mclean who score Queensland’s only try. ACT 17 (Tries; P Ryan 2, D Power – Con; G Thomas – PG; G Thomas) defeated Queensland 13 (Tries; Mclean – PG; Mclean 3)
