John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 4 Saturday, 3rd May 2014

Match of the Round:

Royals (4th) vs. Tuggeranong (3rd) – Phillip Oval, Phillip (Wal Scollen Shield) First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm

Its round 4 and our match of the round is the Grand Final replay between Tuggeranong and Royals. Both teams will not only compete for competition points but also for the ‘Wal Scollen Shield’ which is played annually between the clubs. Royals are the current holders of the shield and have organised a great day for the match include there annual ladies day. Royals secured their first win of the season over Uni-Norths in a lopsided affair. While Royals were pushed in the first half, in the second half they turned it on to run way with the game 52-13. Newcomer to Royals Steve Sione was a standard scoring a hat trick of tries, while half back Pedro Rolando directed play all day and was reward with 2 tries of his own in a personal tally of 20 points. Royals will be boosted by the return of Locky McCaffery and Haru Tatekawa who featured against the Owls and also the inclusion of Siliva Siliva who was out with a knee injury last weekend. Tuggeranong remain undefeated in the early part of the season thanks to a 20-17 victory of Queanbeyan on a chilly Thursday night. Vikings had to fight very hard for this victory, and the win shows great ability in their team especially as they were missing a host of players who were selected in the Australian u20’s squad. This weekend Tuggeranong have included a new face to their team in Nigel Ah Wong at outside centre. You can expect this game to come down to the wire as like all previous games in 2013 and that the intensity and quality will be of the highest level. The last time these two teams played: Grand Final 2013 (Tuggeranong 28 def Royals 21)

Queanbeyan (2nd) v Uni-Norths (7th), Campese Oval, Queanbeyan (Pat Matthews Cup) First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm

This round 4 match up will be played for the “Pat Mathews Cup” which is currently held by Queanbeyan. This cup is played for every first match between the two teams at Campese Oval. Queanbeyan were unlucky not to come away with the competition points in their 3 point loss to Vikings. In a game that could have gone either way, Tuggeranong flexed their muscles to secure the win and show why they have won 3 titles in a row. Queanbeyan’s back rowers Dan Penca and Tim McNamara were inspirational for the Whites, with Dan picking up the Skins Man of the Match. Queanbeyan will welcome JP Smith and Leon Power into an already massive forward pack who will look to dominate up front, setting a front foot platform for their backs. Uni-Norths suffered their worst defeat of the season, going down to a quality Royals outfit. It was a tale of st nd two halves for the Owls, who were in the match during the 1 half, but a disappointing 2 half saw them let in 31 points. Uni-Norths will be looking to tighten up there defense this weekend as they aim to get there season back on track. The Owls have had success playing out at Queanbeyan winning the Pat Matthews Cup in 2011 & 2012 and will be up to reclaim the cup once again. The last time these two teams played: Round 17, 2013 (Queanbeyan 55 def Uni-Norths 22)

Wests (5th) v Easts (6th), Jamison Oval, Jamison First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm

Wests finally got there season underway after much delay due to weather issues and competition byes. Unfortunately for Wests they didn’t get the start they were after beaten comprehensively by Gungahlin 43-18. Drew Southwell starred scoring a double, but Coach Craig Robberds indicated the team needed to work more on getting to the break down quicker. Wests will welcome big Fotu Auelua into the side, who will provide some much needed go forward and break down expertise. The Lions will also have a new look back line with Andrew Parsons, Alex McNamara and BJ Sione all coming into the side. Easts have had two weekends off since there round 2 losses to Gungahlin at home. The break will have given the team plenty of time to work on key areas that let them down in that game. Going to Jamison this weekend Easts will be aware that Wests are a little bit under done, having also played only the one game and this could be a perfect opportunity for Easts to secure an early win like they did last year when they defeated Wests early in the competition. The last time these two teams played: Round 16, 2013 (West 52 def Easts 18)

MATCH PREVIEW Wests will be looking for their second win this weekend after making easy work of Easts 2 nd Grade. The Lions scored six tries in their 30-0 victory, with 4 ties coming from the backline. UniNorths will have to go back to the drawing board and work on their defence after being thrashed 76-5 against Queanbeyan.

Wests colts have now secured two wins on the trot to sit second on the ladder after round 4. Like last weekend, the Lions scored a bonus point victory thanks to the 31-8 victory over Easts. Uni-Norths again were unlucky not to secure their first win after leading mid way through the 2nd half, but again the Owls came away with another crucial bonus point.

MATCH PREVIEW The Lions scored a bonus point victory over Easts to join the winners circle for the first time this season after scoring 7 tries to two. UniNorths almost handed Queanbeyan 3rd’s there 1st defeat in almost 2 years going down 19-10 after Queanbeyan scored just before fulltime to put the game beyond reach.

Unfortunately for Wests, Easts forfeited their 4th grade fixture giving the Lions a bonus point victory. Wests now sit second on the ladder five spots clear of their opponents Uni-Norths. The Owls went down to an impressive Queanbeyan, 27-5. The loss means the Owls are still winless, but are showing encouraging signs of getting their first win.

MATCH PREVIEW Easts were held scoreless in tough conditions at Jamison Oval. This was the second time Easts were unable to score a point, but in front of a home crowd, no doubt they will be fired up and ready to take on Queanbeyan. Queanbeyan will be confident after there attacking display last weekend in which they scored 11 tries. Winger Rob Beath had a field day crossing 6 times, an outstanding individual effort.

Easts were beaten by a well organised Wests team who were coming off the back of an impressive Round 3 win. For Easts they will again have another tough ask on their hands, but they will be spurred on by their home crowd. Queanbeyan showed there class holding on to defeat a fast finishing Uni-Norths outfit to give the Whites there second win of the season.

MATCH PREVIEW Easts third grade were unable to withstand Wests attacking prowess as Wests ran away a 43-12 victors. Queanbeyan on the other hand showed there class as they held on to secure a 19-10 victory over a gallant Owls outfit.

Queanbeyan sit on top of the 4th Grade ladder thanks to their 27-5 victory over Uni-Norths on a miserable Saturday morning. The Whites have secured bonus points in both there wins and will be looking for the same outcome against Easts.

John I Dent Cup Photos By Nick Guoth – RD 4 ‘Wests vs. Easts’

2014 Women’s Competition Round 1 The Women’s Competition finally gets underway after a number of pre season carnivals preparing clubs for the 15 a side competition. This year the girls competition will be played over 10 rounds, playing 8 matches (4 home, 4 away) before aligning with the John I Dent Cup Final Series in late July early October. Round 1 see’s only one match being played and that is between Uni-Norths and Royals at ANU North Oval 12:30pm. The matches between the two clubs are always tough encounters with both having a number of players who have featured in the ACT Women’s rep programs for a

number of years. Royals finished 3rd last year, while Uni after getting the wood over Queanbeyan in the Major Semi Final were outclassed in the Grand Final by Queanbeyan to be runners up. Defending Champions Queanbeyan will have the bye this weekend while our match between Jindabyne and ADFA/RMC is being rescheduled due to ADFA/RMC being unavailable. Best of luck to all clubs in this year’s competition and no doubt this will be another exciting season in women’s rugby union.

MONARO DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION: Round 4 in First Division there is only one match taking place this weekend with both ADFA and RMC unavailable. This weekend’s match of the round is Grand Final replay between Goulburn and Yass at Goulburn. Both clubs going into this game on the back of round 3 victories and will be full of confidence. Goulburn and Yass matches are renowned as tough and close encounters and this weekend should be no different. In round 3, Cooma finally got there season underway after an unlucky run of bad weather and rescheduling and the lack of matches showed as Goulburn ran away 51-14 victors. Cooma’s 2nd grade put up a much better fight only going down 17-3 to Goulburn. ADFA continued their winning ways handing Hall there third successive defeat 36-5. The bonus point victory for ADFA has seen them jump to second on the ladder thanks to handy bonus points in their previous two losses. The Bushrangers did have something to cheers about with their 2nd grade securing their second win of the season 19-0. ADFA second grade are yet to win a game, but with games in hand, they can easily make up some points. First Division - 1st Grade TEAM

SECOND DIVISION: Round 1 of the 2nd Division has already showed us who the competition heavy weights are with 2014 champions Jindabyne and Crookwell flexing their muscles early with big wins. Jindabyne started off their defence with an impressive 30-7 victory over Bungendore at Bungendore. Travelling to the Mudchooks home ground and coming away with a bonus point win is no easy feat, but in further depicts Jindabyne’s dominance over the competition in the last two years. Lucas Rixon starred for the Bushpigs scoring 4 tries why fly half Jake Roarty directed play superbly in tough conditions to also score a try himself and kick crucial goals. Crookwell made easy work off last year’s runners up Taralga with a 29-0 victory in front of their home fans. The win was on the back of some fine goal kicking from Crookwell’s secondrower who slotted 4 penalty goals and a conversion. For Taralga it was a disappoint way to start the season, but with the bye this weekend they can go back to the training paddock and work on the key areas that let them down. Round 2’s match of the round is Jindabyne v Crookwell at Jindabyne. This match will be a huge test for both teams to see where they are at this early in the season. Both teams have a great blend of youth and experience so we can expect this match to be a great hit out. Our other match see’s Boorowa kick start their season at home against Bungendore. Boorowa will be looking to improve from last year’s performance and push for a spot in the top 4. Second Division
