John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 6 Saturday 2nd May
MATCH OF THE ROUND: Uni-Norths (3) v Wests (4) @ ANU North Oval First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Uni-Norths 33 defeated Wests 29, Rd 10 2014 The Owls & the Lions have had some classic matches in the past, and going on the previous encounter in which the Owls scored in the last play of the game to win, this match of the round will be one to watch. Uni-Norths are coming off a 6 all draw with Gungahlin thanks to a last minute penalty goal in a game that was riddle by drop ball and both teams missing a number of chances to score. To the Owl’s credit, they were down to 14 men for 10 minutes and were able to hold out the Eagles. This weekend’s tests will be a great indication of where the Owls are at and a number of changes have been made with Leli Fa, Yuuki Mori & Shota Yamamoto making their 1st Grade run on debut for the club. Wests are coming off a loss and then the bye, so they will be ready to kick start their 5 week campaign before their next bye with a win. Against Queanbeyan, a large number of dropped ball killed any chance of Wests of upsetting the Whites at home. The Lions will be boosted by the return Andrew Parson who missed their last game, while Seb Lorraway steps into the fly half position, shifting Joe Smellie to fullback. Both clubs open and blind side flankers are known fetchers of the ball and work hard around the field, whoever wins this battle, will put their team in a strong position to come away with the competition points.
Royals (5) v Gungahlin (7) @ Phillip Oval First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm Previous Result: Royals 38 Defeated Gungahlin 24 Rd 14 2014 Royals will be fired up this weekend to give 100th gamer Ben Johnston a win on such a milestone for the club. Going off their last performance against Tuggeranong, Royals are starting to get those combinations working and following the systems that are in place. While they still lost, that game was another step forward for them. Pedro Rolando makes a timely return to the side this week, after an extended time on the sideline through injuries. Pedro will be a major threat and Gungahlin will have to keep a close eye on him. Reece Coble and Otto Wrakonie also come into the side as well to give them more attacking threats. Gungahlin were unable to hold onto a slim lead which would have seen them secure their maiden win for the season. In greasy condition, the Eagles traded blow for blow with the Owls, but both teams were unsuccessful in getting across the line and relied on their kicks to get them out of trouble and to score the points. While they shared the points, Gungahlin will gain some confidence out of that game and will going into this weekend clash looking to upset Royals. Both teams and Easts are locked in a 3 way battle on 9 competition points so a win is vital.
Queanbeyan (1) v Easts (6) @ Campese Oval First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, 3rd Grade: 12:15pm Previous Result: Queanbeyan 85 Defeated Easts 17 Rd 10 2014 Queanbeyan couldn’t have asked for a better start, and are the only side to remain undefeated thus far. In less than favourable conditions under lights, The Whites shot out to a quick lead against Vikings, blowing them off the park with a number of tries and forcing uncharacteristic like errors from them. Thanks to this lead, they were able to hold on take home the competition points. This weekend, there is more than competition points on offer, as both Queanbeyan and Easts play in memory of Peter ‘Froggy’ Morton who was a patron of both clubs. Queanbeyan have named Jake Gordon at hooker this week and Tom G Darmody at Blindside flanker. Easts playing at the stadium in round 4 were unable to contain Uni-Norths in a game that could have been filled with plenty of attacking flow if it hadn’t been for the down poor midway through the first half. Easts got within 5 of the Owls thanks to the boot of Darcy Eason, but were unable to break through in the second half. This weekend, Easts will go into this game known that they can win, having previously upset Queanbeyan at home back in 2013. Andrew Eldred comes onto the wing for the first time this year, while Angus Paggett slots into the number 8 position. Watch for Easts to test Queanbeyan and look to cause an upset.

MATCH FACT Queanbeyan and Easts will be playing for the Peter ‘Froggy’ Morton Memorial Shield. This is the first times these two teams will clash for the shield.
QUEANBEYAN & EASTS PLAY OFF FOR THE PETER ‘FROGGY’ MORTON MEMORIAL SHIELD The Queanbeyan Whites and Eastern Suburbs will play for the Peter “Froggy” Morton Memorial shield for the first time on May 2nd at Queanbeyan’s Campese Oval. Froggy had ties with both clubs having played 200 games for Easts before moving to help start the Whites in 1955. Unfortunately Peter passed away in 2014 Over the years, Froggy had notched up quite a number of achievements with the Queanbeyan Whites which are listed below. Club patron from the year 2001. Life member since 1975 and the most senior life member of the ACTRU (1979). Club coach with Tommy Byrne in 1956, club coach with Bob Turner in 1957, coach in 1962, 1971-72 and again in 1979. From 1953 to 1960, Froggy represented the ACT in all representative fixtures including matches against the All Blacks, the Lions, Japanese and South African international teams. Peter also represented NSW, NSW Country (48 times) and was a Wallaby triallist. Frog was not only a coach he was a trainer and strapper for the Whites, the ACT side, the ACT schoolboys and the Australian Schoolboys. His love of rugby and the Whites never waned and he made a comeback in 1968 after a retirement of five years and continued to fill in wherever there was a player shortage. In 1995, the original white hall at Taylor Park (which he was involved in building) was demolished and rebuilt. The new building was named the Peter Morton BEM Sports Pavilion. Queanbeyan’s Mayor Tim Overall will unveil a bench at Campese Oval in recognition of Froggy’s contribution to the community. The bench replaces the seat where he used to sit to watch the Whites in action.
QUEANBEYAN WHITES REUNION: The Queanbeyan Whites are celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2015. Formed in 1954, the Whites entered the ACT competition in 1955. The reunion activities will kick off with an old boys’ dinner on Friday the 29th of May and will continue on Saturday the 30th with the games against Tuggeranong at Campese Oval. MATCH PREVIEW Easts will have their hands full this weekend taking ladder leaders Queanbeyan. Easts put up a fight against Uni-Norths, but the Owls were able to finish strong winning 41-14. Queanbeyan were able to hold on in there clash of the heavy weights against Vikings last Thursday night. The game was very intense with 4 points separating the teams.
Queanbeyan were unlucky not to come away with a win in their last encounter against Wests, going down 8-7. A valuable bonus point was gained which has cemented the Whites position in the four for now. Easts though remain winless after Uni-Norths being the superior, running away with the game 39-0.

MATCH PREVIEW Like Colts, Gungahlin let slip a led which cost them 4 valuable competition points, however in the end they had to settle for 2, as the final score result in a draw thanks to a last minute try to the Owls. Royals though after an impressive victory over Tuggeranong currently sit 2 points outside the top 4, and a win this weekend could see them sit in either 3rd or 4th position.
Royals colts are the form team of the competition thus far and sit a hefty 8 points clear on top thanks to a gutsy 8-7 win over Vikings. Gungahlin on the other hand will be very disappointed they let a 21-10 lead slip against Uni-Norths resulting in them losing 26-21. This weekend’s clash will be the match of the round in colts which will feature a number of key battles on the field. The battles of inside centres will be fierce while the contest at the break down between Jacob Mann & Ethan Jones will be exciting.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals were unable to pull off the same heroics that saw them upset Vikings in the Major Semi in 2014, going down comfortably 31-8. There start to the season has been less than ideal having only secured the 2 competition points. Gungahlin on the other hand at present sit just outside the top 4. Both clubs are desperate for a win if they want to remain in contact with the top 4 teams.
Despite currently sitting 2nd on the ladder, Royals got a touch up in their last match against Vikings, going down 50-7.The loss was their first of the season. The Eagles though have only played the one match in the season and will have their work cut out taking on Royals. Both teams will have a number of experienced players and win will for either clubs were certainly boost their confidence and position as we get towards the mid-way of the season.

MATCH PREVIEW Uni-Norths desperation saw them come from behind to snatch a 17 all draw with the Eagles after the final siren had gone. The result still have the Owls sitting in 2nd place on the ladder. Wests though took on Queanbeyan going down by 21 points. 2 points seperate these two teams on the ladder meaning this will be match of the round in 2nd Grade.
Uni-Norths have finally got there season off and running with a dramatic come from behind victory against an improved Gungahlin outfit. The Owls started slow, but rallied to turn an 11 point deficit into a 5 point lead. Wests are still in search of their first win but as the week’s progress, so do they.

MATCH PREVIEW Uni-Norths and Wests sit 1 and 2 on the table thus far but Wests have all the form, not having lost yet. The Owls respectively have a win and draw, but coming up against a red hot Lions outfit will be a tough tests. Whoever wins this match will be at the top of the table next week after 4 rounds. Both teams a number of players who have played higher grades before so expect this match to be a great show down.
The Owls will be home for the first time this years and 4th grade will look to get things underway with their first win of the season. In their only match thus far, they went down by two points after a plenty kick after the siren went wide of the post. Wests are coming off big loss to Queanbeyan and will be out to make amends for that. Expect this match to be a close one.

2015 ARU School Student Referee Scholarship The ARU School Student Scholarship was introduced a number of years ago as an initiative to raise the profile of refereeing through schools. The program is a way of providing encouragement for young referees and to help keep them interested in refereeing once they complete school. In 2015 the ACT has three ARU School Student Scholarship referees including; Thomas Brown from Canberra Grammar School, Mitchell Colbert from Marist College and Leo Kaczmarek from St Mary MacKillop. This is the 2nd time the boys have been successful in attaining the ARU School Student Scholarship, which is indicative of their enormous potential. The students selected for the ARU School Student Scholarship program will be involved in a range of activities designed to improve their knowledge of the game and enhance their performance as referees. One of these activities is helping with No 6 referee duties at the Super Rugby games, exposing them to a higher standard of rugby which they may never have otherwise been exposed to. All three boys have been refereeing for a few years now. They started refereeing the younger junior grades and have quickly progressed to higher junior grades. The program has proved very successful with a significant number of young referees progressing through the scholarship program to referee at senior levels in their state. All three ACT ARU School Student Scholarship referees are well on their way to achieving such success as they aspire to greater heights within the refereeing profession. If anyone is interested in refereeing please contact Amy Allpress e-mail: a.allpress@brumbies.com.au

FIRST & SECOND DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION:
SOUTH COAST MONARO - SECOND DIVISION
The Monaro first Division competition is back underway this weekend after a week off. The competition will now run for 5 consecutive weekends before the June Long Weekend Competition bye, which will also be when the Brumbies Provincial Tournament takes place.
Round 3 will see some cracking matches being played over the Monaro and South Coast area, none more than Batemans Bay’s clash with Braidwood. The Boars currently sit in the wild card place on the ladder, but a bonus point win to the Redbacks could elevate them into the top four.
Hall will not be playing this weekend as a result of the RMC’s military commitments, so that match has been rescheduled. However Hall will have played ADFA in both grades in there round 13 rescheduled match on Thursday 30th April.
Crookwell are coming off the back of consecutives, and a win against Bungendore could see them cement the Monaro Zone leader. However Bungendore have had 2 weeks off in preparation for this game will be confident having already secured a win against the defending Premier’s Taralga in round 1.
The match of round will be the battle of the Hume Highway with Goulburn making the trip down the road to take on Yass. The Rams are yet to secure a win this season and taking on the defending premiers will be a tough task. In the 2nd grade match up though, both teams are currently undefeated and will also be the match of the round. In the final fixture for this weekend, Cooma will make the drive to ADFA as they look to continue their winning start to the season. The Red Devils have been very dominant in the first two rounds, but playing ADFA at ADFA will not be as easy as it suggest on the ladder standings thus far. The 2nd Grade battle will be an interesting affair as both clubs are winless and are only separated by for & against. Second Grade: TEAM – 2nd Yass Goulburn

First Grade:
The Broulee Dolphins are a home for the first time this year and like Bungendore have had the last 2 weeks off. In front of their home crowd and you surely can expect the Dolphins to be fired up as they search for their first win. Like the Dolphins, Bay Red are also chasing a win, and after their previous touch up against the Boars, its guaranteed Bay Red efforts on the field will be increased. Jindabyne return home again as they take on Taralga in a rematch of the 2013 Grand Final. When these two meet, it’s always a very physical and hard fought game and with the Tigers title defence not going as plan thus far, this will be one to watch. Milton have the bye, so they are guaranteed 4 competition points and a spot in the top four, whereas Boorowa’s bye points will see them go to 6 points thanks to two bonus points in their early competition losses.
