John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 4 Saturday, 3rd May 2014

Match of the Round:

Royals (4th) vs. Tuggeranong (3rd) – Phillip Oval, Phillip (Wal Scollen Shield) First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm

Its round 4 and our match of the round is the Grand Final replay between Tuggeranong and Royals. Both teams will not only compete for competition points but also for the ‘Wal Scollen Shield’ which is played annually between the clubs. Royals are the current holders of the shield and have organised a great day for the match include there annual ladies day. Royals secured their first win of the season over Uni-Norths in a lopsided affair. While Royals were pushed in the first half, in the second half they turned it on to run way with the game 52-13. Newcomer to Royals Steve Sione was a standard scoring a hat trick of tries, while half back Pedro Rolando directed play all day and was reward with 2 tries of his own in a personal tally of 20 points. Royals will be boosted by the return of Locky McCaffery and Haru Tatekawa who featured against the Owls and also the inclusion of Siliva Siliva who was out with a knee injury last weekend. Tuggeranong remain undefeated in the early part of the season thanks to a 20-17 victory of Queanbeyan on a chilly Thursday night. Vikings had to fight very hard for this victory, and the win shows great ability in their team especially as they were missing a host of players who were selected in the Australian u20’s squad. This weekend Tuggeranong have included a new face to their team in Nigel Ah Wong at outside centre. You can expect this game to come down to the wire as like all previous games in 2013 and that the intensity and quality will be of the highest level. The last time these two teams played: Grand Final 2013 (Tuggeranong 28 def Royals 21)

Queanbeyan (2nd) v Uni-Norths (7th), Campese Oval, Queanbeyan (Pat Matthews Cup) First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm

This round 4 match up will be played for the “Pat Mathews Cup” which is currently held by Queanbeyan. This cup is played for every first match between the two teams at Campese Oval. Queanbeyan were unlucky not to come away with the competition points in their 3 point loss to Vikings. In a game that could have gone either way, Tuggeranong flexed their muscles to secure the win and show why they have won 3 titles in a row. Queanbeyan’s back rowers Dan Penca and Tim McNamara were inspirational for the Whites, with Dan picking up the Skins Man of the Match. Queanbeyan will welcome JP Smith and Leon Power into an already massive forward pack who will look to dominate up front, setting a front foot platform for their backs. Uni-Norths suffered their worst defeat of the season, going down to a quality Royals outfit. It was a tale of st nd two halves for the Owls, who were in the match during the 1 half, but a disappointing 2 half saw them let in 31 points. Uni-Norths will be looking to tighten up there defense this weekend as they aim to get there season back on track. The Owls have had success playing out at Queanbeyan winning the Pat Matthews Cup in 2011 & 2012 and will be up to reclaim the cup once again. The last time these two teams played: Round 17, 2013 (Queanbeyan 55 def Uni-Norths 22)

Wests (5th) v Easts (6th), Jamison Oval, Jamison First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm

Wests finally got there season underway after much delay due to weather issues and competition byes. Unfortunately for Wests they didn’t get the start they were after beaten comprehensively by Gungahlin 43-18. Drew Southwell starred scoring a double, but Coach Craig Robberds indicated the team needed to work more on getting to the break down quicker. Wests will welcome big Fotu Auelua into the side, who will provide some much needed go forward and break down expertise. The Lions will also have a new look back line with Andrew Parsons, Alex McNamara and BJ Sione all coming into the side. Easts have had two weekends off since there round 2 losses to Gungahlin at home. The break will have given the team plenty of time to work on key areas that let them down in that game. Going to Jamison this weekend Easts will be aware that Wests are a little bit under done, having also played only the one game and this could be a perfect opportunity for Easts to secure an early win like they did last year when they defeated Wests early in the competition. The last time these two teams played: Round 16, 2013 (West 52 def Easts 18)

MATCH PREVIEW This round 3 blockbuster will be a great test for both teams. Tuggeranong are coming off the back of a 24 all draw with Queanbeyan while Royals secure a bonus point victory over the Owls. Both clubs love the contest and have a number of quality players who are knock on the door to play first grade. Expect a hard and fast contest.

Tuggeranong are the only colts team that remain undefeated at present in colts and Royals would like nothing more than to hand Vikings there first defeat. Both clubs secured confident boosting victories in round 3 and will take that into the match.

MATCH PREVIEW Royals were able to secure their second win of the season with a 17-10 over the Owls at ANU. Royals currently sit 3rd on ladder while Tuggeranong are in 7th place but have only played the one game in round 2 due to rescheduling. Both clubs feature in the finals last year so we can expect this match to be of high quality.

Royals 4th Grade were lucky to secure their second win holding off Uni-Norths in the dying minutes for a 17-15 victory. Like 3rd grade, both teams feature in last year’s finals series. Tuggeranong after 2 weeks off will be excited to finally take the field and continue there winning ways from round 2.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PAUL DRIVER OF ROYALS who will be playing his 300th game for Royals against Vikings and will be joining the clubs illustrious ‘Multi 100 Club’. Paul has both played and coached at Royals since still at School and will have all of his family present on Saturday to cheer him on. (Paul is on the right with his mate Steve Reardon)

MATCH FACT Queanbeyan and Uni-Norths will be playing for the ‘Pat Matthews Cup’. The Pat Matthews Cup was introduced in 2011 after Pat tragically past away in 2010 after play 4th Grade for the Whites against Uni-Norths. Pat played over 650 games for Queanbeyan and also had an affiliation with Universities touring with the club on their USA trip. Since the inception of this regular fixture the Owls have won it in 2011 & 2012 while Queanbeyan are the currently holders defeating Uni’s last year 36-20

MATCH PREVIEW Queanbeyan found themselves locked in a very tough battle against Tuggeranong which resulted in a 24 all draw. While Queanbeyan remain undefeated, they would have been very disappointed they were able to secure a win. Uni-Norths on the other hand are still yet to secure their first win after being outclassed by a dominate Royals outfit.

Queanbeyan Colts have won 1 from 2 thus far and had a tough encounter against 2013 premiers Tuggeranong. Vikings were too good for the Whites, winning comfortably. The Whites will have another battle on their hands against the Owls. While results haven’t gone the Owls way, last weekend they came from 26-5 behind to draw level with Royals with 5 minutes remaining before Royals scored in the dying to secure a memorable victory.

MATCH PREVIEW Queanbeyan 3rds have had two weeks off thanks to Easter and with their round 3 match being rescheduled for a later date. As a result they will be fresh and read to go as they look to remain undefeated. Uni-Norths 3rds suffered a disappointing loss to royals after their 2nd round win. The Owls were able to secure a bonus point for their loss. Both clubs will look to get on the front foot early so we can expect some running rugby.

Like 3rd grade, Queanbeyan 4th Grade are in the same boat and will be anxious to get out any play some rugby in front of their home crowd for the first time this year. The Owls though continue to improve this year after going down 17-15 to Royals last weekend, but were unlucky not to come away with the competition points blowing a chance to win the game in the dying moments. This game will be another tight contest with both clubs having a great blend of youth and experience.

MATCH PREVIEW Both Easts and Wests are yet to join the winners circle for 2014 and today’s match is a great opportunity to secure competition points. Both clubs only loss have come at the hand of Gungahlin Eagles. Wests at home are always tough to beat, so Easts will have a challenge on their hands.

Wests colts ran riot over Gungahlin last weekend to record their first win of the season 63-0. Full of confidence, Wests will eye this match as great chance to continue their winner streak. Easts colts showed promise going down to Gungahlin in their first match 15-0 and will only get stronger as the season goes on.

MONARO DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION: Round 3 After a two week break thanks to Easter and ANZAC Day weekend, Monaro 1st Division are ready to get there season back on track before the June Long Weekend. There have been some rescheduled matches players of the break, with ADFA and RMC doing battle as the curtain raiser for the Brumbies v Chiefs game. RMC proved too strong wining 2317. ADFA score a late try giving them a bonus point which may come in hand later in the season. RMC than backed up there effort to take on Yass who they would have played this weekend. RMC again continued their strong start to defeat Yass 27-19. RMC’s fly starred that day scoring 17 points. Yass held on for a 1 point victory in 2nd grade, 21-20 to secure their first win for the season. First Division match of the round will be Goulburn v Cooma in Goulburn. Goulburn currently top the ladder with 2 bonus point victories, where as Cooma have not yet been able to play a game due to wet weather issue. While Cooma have a tough ask, having no games since the pre season carnival, they did show some good form that day especially against Goulburn. Our other game this weekend is Hall and ADFA which is being played on Friday night as ADFA are unavailable on Saturday. Both Clubs will be looking to secure their first win. 1st Grade TEAM

SECOND DIVISION: Round 1 The Monaro 2nd Division finally gets underway this weekend with games in Bungendore and Crookwell. Like 2013 there are 5 teams in the competition, with everyone playing each other 3 times over a 15 round competition. Jindabyne will start the 2014 season as competition favourites having taken the title out for the last 2 years straight and without losing a game. In saying that, the likes of Boorowa, Crookwell, Bungendore and last year’s runners up Taralga no doubt have all been working hard in the pre season to challenge the Bush Pigs. Round 1 we have two outstanding matches to kick start the season and this week’s match of the round is Crookwell v Taralga. Both teams were successful in their own right, making it to the finals. Crookwell are always tough to beat at home, but the Tigers will be driven by coming so close to premiership glory, they will want to get off to as best start as possible. Bungendore will host Jindabyne in the other match, and this match will also be a very exciting and tough contests. Both teams have been very consistent over the previous two years and are known for their close encounters. Boorowa have the bye this weekend and will have an extra week up there sleeve to get everything in order for their first games at home against Bungendore in round 2.
