John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 6 Saturday, 17th May 2014
Match of the Round: Gungahlin (2) vs. Queanbeyan (3) – Nicholls Oval, Nicholls First Grade: 3:25pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm
This weekend’s match of the round will feature at Nicholls Oval, home of the Gungahlin Eagles who have recorded some famous victories there. Both teams are sitting comfortable in the top four at present, but as we near the half way point of the season, teams can’t afford to drop games now. Gungahlin impressive 3 game winning streak has come to an end after tasting defeat at the hands of Vikings at Viking Park. Tuggeranong were to strong running away with the game 45-11 after a close first half. The loss to the reigning premiers could be a blessing for Eagles as now they know what is required if they are go st all the way this year and break an 11 year 1 grade Premiership drought. The Eagles have made 3 changes to last weekend’s side with Luke Duffey starting at inside centre which see’s regular centre Matt Hawke reshuffle to full back for the injured Jordan Fulivai. Dan Mannix comes into start at fly half for Lionel Cronje while Ruaidhri Murphy comes into a reshuffled front row. Queanbeyan have responded to their round 5 shock loss to Uni-Norths with a 24-17 win over Easts. Queanbeyan had to work for the win, as Easts were no push over and even lead early in the second half. The Whites showed some great ticker to overcome Easts and we can expect that again this weekend. Coach Adam Fahey has called Rob Beath into the starting side; Rob has scored 8 tries in his last 2 games including 6 tries in second grade against Uni-Norths. Other Changes include Aiden Kenworthy who will make his first nd grade debut at blind side, while Tom G Darmody, Toby Wilson and Neori Nadruku earn call ups from 2 grade. The last time these two teams played: Round 13, 2013 (Queanbyean 30 def Gungahlin 12)
Tuggeranong (1st) vs. Wests (4th) – Viking Park, Erindale First Grade: 3:25pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm
Tuggeranong have showed they are the team to beat this year after making easy work of Gungahlin in the top of the table clash and remain undefeated. Vikings were just far too good, showing their dominance in the later part of the match where they ran away with the game. Vikings bests were Brendon Tuaeki who was named Skins Man of the Match, while Nigel Ah Wong scored a double and Rodney Iona kicked 5/7. At home again, taking on Wests will be no easy task as for the last few years both teams have had some great matches. Two changes have been made to Vikings in Kerry McInerney and Blake Henman coming into the side at open side and half back. th
Wests have now strung together consecutive wins to jump to 4 on the competition ladder thanks to a bonus point win over the Owls 32-18. Wests were able to pull off big plays when the game was in the balance and secure the win especially after trailing 18-15 early in the second half. Wests were able to retain their structure and shape thanks to Simon Uphill, Jack Whetton, Michael Smith and Charlie Luteru who were standouts for the Lions. Wests will come into this weekend’s match full of confidence and will see the return of try scoring fullback Drew Southwell. The last time these two teams played: Round 19, 2013 (Tuggeranong 48 def Wests 24)
Royals (5th) v Easts (6th), Phillip Oval, Phillip First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm
Royals have had a much needed week off after a disappointing home loss to Tuggeranong in Round 5’s Grand Final replay. Royals were unable to get any go forward ball or threaten Vikings defence, as Tuggeranong’s line speed and pressure suffocated Royals options. This weekend we can expect Royals to bounce back and look to send a statement that despite their poor start they are still a premiership contender. Royals will be boosted by the return of Joel Penders and Sokai Tai while they welcome Robbie Lavery into first grade for the first time this year. Easts have bounced back from their poor performance against Wests to almost knock off Queanbeyan and a spirited effort. Easts were able to frustrate Queanbeyan in a scrappy game and secure at least a bonus point in the loss. Coach Jeremy Osborne said his team was quite gutsy and showed a bit more of a dig than they have previously shown this season. Hopefully Easts can continue on from that performance and get there first win of 2014. The last time these two teams played: Round 13, 2013 (Royals 30 def East 15)

MATCH PREVIEW Gungahlin suffered their first loss of the season in a very tough battle against Tuggeranong while Queanbeayn eased to victory over Easts. This weekend’s match between the two clubs is the second grade match of the round as both sit 1st and 2nd on the table. It will be without a doubt a very physical encounter with a lot of ball movement as both teams love to throw the ball around.
Gungahlin colts had a heavy defeat at the hands of Tuggeranong last weekend which has seen them still remain 4th on the table but the bottom clubs are closing in. Queanbeyan have jumped to second thanks to their victory over Easts and Wests loss. Both sides have a mountain of talent on display so we can expect some pieces of brilliance throughout the game.

MATCH PREVIEW Gungahlin suffered their first loss of the season in a high scoring encounter against Tuggeranong which gave the Eagles a 4 try bonus point. Queanbeyan though continue there unbeaten run with a 40-5 victory over Easts. Like 2nd grade this match between the two clubs is the third grade match of the round as both sit 1st and 2nd on the table. Not only that, but this is also areplay of last year Grand Final so it’s sure to be a entertaining match
Gungahlin 4th were on the receiving end of a huge defeat going down 11 try’s to 1. While it was disappointing for the Eagles, here is another great chance for them to bounce back in front of their fans. However it will be a hard task with Queanbeyan yet to lose a game this season and currently sit on top of the 4th Grade competition ladder.

MATCH FACT Both these clubs have played in their fair share of Grand Finals of recent, having played back to back Grand Finals in 2011 & 2012 with Tuggeranong wining both. No Grand Final would be more memorable than the 2005 game when Wests defeated Tuggeranong 19-17 to have Wests clean sweep every single Grand Final that day, an outstanding achievement by a club.

MATCH PREVIEW Easts 2nds are yet to join the winners circle, after a disappointing loss to a very good Queanbeyan outfit. This weekend task does not get any easier as Royals look to bounce back from their 32-10 loss to Vikings in round 5. Royals will look for early dominance from there forwards to get Easts on the back foot, while Easts will be relying on player experience to get them the win.
Royals colts will be fresh from the bye and will be ready to start making a move into the top four. After going down to Tuggeranong in round 5, Royals currently sit in 5th Spot, ahead of UniNorths on for and against. Easts on the other hand are yet to secure a win, but every week are constantly improving as a team and push their opponents for the full game.

MATCH PREVIEW Easts 3rds had a hard task on their hands taking on 3rd grade powerhouse team Queanbeyan. Unfortunately the Whites showered why they haven’t lost a game in over two years running away 40-5 victors. Royals 3rds suffered their second loss of the season to Vikings, but thanks to two victories Royals currently sit 3rd on the ladder and will look to charge up the ladder this weekend.
Easts 4th Grade finally got on the field after a tough couple of rounds with playing numbers. However Easts were unable to come away with the win against Queanbeyan, but now have something to build from. Royals though had a heartbreaking loss to Vikings 26-21. A win would have seen Royals higher on the competition ladder.

2014 Women’s Competition Round 2 Royals and Uni-Norths were the only teams to play in round 1 and what a match it was. Royals ran away with it in the end to outscore the Owls 32-19, thanks to two late tries. Both teams were very physical and showed why they are both premiership favourites. Royals scored 6 tries to gain a bonus point, but the score could have been more had their kicker been more accurate kicking 1/6. This weekend Royals have the bye, while Uni-Norths travel to Jindabyne to play before the men’s Second Division game. Both clubs will be looking to secure their first win and
put on a show for the crowd. ADFA/RMC and Queanbeyan are looking to reschedule there match due to the unavailability of ADFA/RMC before the June long weekend. Women’s Division TEAM

MONARO DIVISION COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION: Round 5 is upon us and we have all teams back playing this weekend except for RMC and Goulburn, with RMC being unavailable. That match is currently being rescheduled. This weekend’s match of the round is ADFA (2) v Yass (4) at Dowsett Oval. ADFA have only won the one game but have secure four bonus points. Yass has also only won one game, but haven’t got as many bonus points as they would have liked. These two teams met in last year’s preliminary final with Yass coming away with the win and a spot in the Grand Final which lead Yass winning the Grand Final. The other match this weekend is Hall (6) v Cooma (5) at Hall. The Bushrangers are yet to register a win this season and will see this as a great chance as Cooma a very underdone in the match department at present. This will be the start of three consecutive games for Cooma who are looking to make ground on their opponents. Our only fixture last weekend saw Goulburn go one up over Yass who defeated them in the Grand Final last year. The dirty reds were far too strong running in 9 tries to 1 to win 51-5 in 1st grade. Goulburn completed the double winning 2nd grade 39-7. First Division - 1st Grade TEAM

SECOND DIVISION: Its round 3 and again we have another two blockbuster matches taking place. Match of the round will be between Taralga and Bungendore at Taralga. This will be Taralga first home game and without a doubt they will be looking to turn it on for their home crowd. Traditionally the matches between these two teams have been very hard and fair contests and we can expect the same this weekend. The Tigers will be fresh from their round 2 bye, while the Mudchooks secured their first win of the season in a hard fought contest against Boorowa 15-5 at Boorowa. The final match of round 3 is between Jindabyne and Boorowa at Jindabyne. Boorowa showed a much improved effort against Bungendore and will be a force to reckon this year with if they can get things right on the field. More than likely this season we could see Boorowa easily upset a few teams and look for a finals birth after missing out last year. This match will be the second home game in a row for the bushpigs who hosted Crookwell in last weekend’s match of the round. The match between the two competitions favourite lived up to the hype, with both teams going toe to toe and a fierce encounter. In the end the teams could not be separated finishing the game locked at 22 all. The Bushpigs came away with a bonus point for scoring 4 tries, but in the end both teams would have loved to secure the whole 4 competition points.
